Speed up the computer

Q: Speed up the computer

In these pictures what here can I remove from start up ?

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Speed up the computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer was running just fine til about a week ago. I am on a secure network that was before yielding 1/mb/sec download speeds on wireless router. I have tested the network on my laptop and it still runs just fine, however my desktop has become sluggish, the download speeds are down to 30kb/sec and the search function has been taken over by "searchfastfind.net" that Malware Bytes has failed to find. Today the internet would simply die and not reconnect, or my browser would redirect to dead sites. The CPU on any processes doesn't seem high, but my computer is screaming like it's running several programs at once. I am using Vista, all updates installed that are available and needed.

What would I do to figure out the sort of malware I suspect this to be?

I ran rkill.exe it found no known programs running, malware still seems to come up empty, but my cpu speed and internet connection are still terrible.

Here is an As SSD for my WD1002FAEX 1TB sata 6GB/s mechanical hard drive

Here is the same test on my Intel 80GB X25 M

For an OS drive the advertised speeds really mean nothing to the average user unless you are going to be transferring large files all day. The most important thing is access time- how long it takes from the time you push the button until the application actually opens. No spinning circles with a good SSD.

This problem confuses me. We've been experiencing slower than normal internet speeds recently. We have Verizon DSL, only 3300 down. Lately we've been getting way lower speeds. I just checked using Verizon's speedtest and it came out as 72 Kbps down and 712 Kbps up.

We have two laptops. Mine is 1.6GHZ with 1GB RAM and hers is a slower 1.2 celeron w/ 1GB RAM. Both running XP. I've tried both wired and wireless.

Speakeasy gives me 292 down and 615 up. Now, beyond the fact that it should be faster down than up, look how slow it is down,.

I've done all the tweaks etc I was on with tech support and they sent a tech today and unfortunately I wasn't home but my GF was. He checked the lines inside and out said there was no problem with the lines.

Using his faster laptop he got a decent 2800 down. When she plugged in her Asus netbook same thing. The tech said the slow speeds were due to the slow computers

Now I know that our machines aren't the fastest and I know that internet speed when it hits your machine is dependent upon cpu speed, but I know we shouldn't be getting such low speeds.

When I lived elsewhere and had cable internet, my current laptop got speeds close to what my cable company said I should be getting. So I am doubting the tech guy even even though the two other laptops got better speeds.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Probably, your problem is related to the clock of your computer. I have a HP computer with Vista System and it's clock is 1.8 Mhz. HD is 320 GB, Ram is 1 GB, but it is slow cause of the 1.8 MHZ clock. Try to use a 3.0 Mhz clock and you will feel the big difference. A problem is to find a HP computer with a 3.0 or 2.8 Mhz clock.

Hi everyone,

I understand that the title is pretty vague. Here is my question. I would like to get my computer running the way it's suppose to be again. I believe that there are various Spyware/Adware programs, amongst other various viruses slowing it down. For example, I can no longer us Internet Explorer by just connecting with "AOL Dialer" (Broadband). Instead, I actually have to log into my AOL account, to be able to run IE. This is just one of the various problems plaguing my computer. I've noticed that there is a method of getting rid of all these various programs, using "HiJackThis". So, I ask you TechGuy; Please help revive my computer!

System Specs:

- I'm running a Dell computer, not exactly sure of the specific model (If there is an easy way to find out without having to look at the physical case, please let me know!)

- Windows XP Home (SP2, not exactly sure on this either. Might still be SP1!)

- IE6

- ISP = AOL Highspeed Broadband

A:How to speed up my computer?

Some things you can do to help find a cause for a computer performing below par:
Do a speed test to see if you are getting what you pay for: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Cleanup the computer:
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Check for adware and malware:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.

My computer is starting and running quite slow it is getting old, but still can run most applications.

Following specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Processor 4400+ 2.30Ghz
Windows 7 Ultimate (32)
ATI Radeon DH 3450

I don't play much games on it nowadays mostly use if for development, but the issue is it takes around 5 minutes to start and load everything. Yesterday I removed a bunch of applications using revo-uninstaller, but the Microsoft ones are the issue they commonly leave registry items behind but it's hard to delete them as they are linked to other applications. All my games are stored on a separate internal hard drive (Seagate 3Gb/s). I also use classic theme. How else can I speed the PC up..?

A:Speed up computer (Win 7)

There are many ways to speed up the PC, the obvious one being to upgrade the RAM (if possible?)

1. Turn off Unused Windows 7 Features:

1. Open up ” Programs and Features ” from Control Panel.
2. Click the ” Turn Windows features on or off ” from the left pane.
3. Now uncheck all the Feature that you don’t use in Windows 7 and
restart the system for the changes to take effect.

There are many features in windows 7 that you can disable if not used.
Disabling these unused features in Windows 7 would indeed help in speeding things up.

2. Disabling the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7:

1. Right Click the “Computer” Icon in the desktop and select “Manage”.
2. Click “Services and Applications” in the “Computer Management” window.
3. Click on “Services”.
4. You’d see a lot of services being listed inside the window. Find “Windows Search” from the list.
5. Right Click on “Windows Search” from the list and choose “Properties”.
6. The “Windows Search Properties Window” will open up. From “Startup type”
click on the drop down menu and choose “Disabled”.
7. Click “Apply” then “OK” and that’s it. The Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature is now disabled.

3. Disabling the Unwanted Visual Effects in Windows 7 to Speed Up more:

1. Right click on ” Computer” and sel... Read more

I've had my laptop for less than a year and I have had viruses which I have got rid of using system restore. I checked it for viruses using various software (Norton, Windows defender, AVG) and nothing seems to be wrong but I've noticed that the speed in which programmes load and espeically on start up is considerably less than it was originally. My hard disc has plenty of space on it (about 1/3) so is there any other reason why it could be so slow? Or anything I could do to speed it up?

A:Computer Speed

The more programs you load on your machine the slower it is going to go. A lot of software has programs that start up with your machine. Sometimes they monitor things and other times they are there just to speed up opening the program. I would uninstall any unneeded programs. Also, when you say you have checked for viruses with 3 seperate AV's... Do you have all of these installed on your machine? You want to have ONLY ONE AV on your machine. These programs check every file that is being accessed. Having more than one means they check each other constantly. If you do have all these installed, uninstall all but one. Having more than one can slow your machine down to a crawl.

I would also run Hijakcthis! and post a log here. That will tell us if you have any unneeded programs running at startup. Plus you might have some spyware holding you down too.

I have a quick question. And thank you all by the way. Everyone is so helpful here! ( I am new oh and inexperienced at computers!) I want to speed up my computer. i was reading a book and it said there are some tools to help speed it up such as disc cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, and Chkdsk?? My computer is really slow so im trying to see whats wrong with it. I have done all the virus stuff. Oh and I deleted a lot of unused programs which I thought would make it so much faster and free up some space but when I went back under the C folder in program files, it was only like one less mb or gb whatever it is. haha cant you see im not that good with this stuff! Anyway, for disc cleanup... will that speed it up? I dont want to delete anything. Will it delete stuff? as for the chkdsk.... should I do that to see whats wrong and what is disk defrag. Should I do that. Im clueeelesss!!

i am trying to speed up my computer and i noticed that i have thousands of temporary files in my temp. folder. my question is can i delete these temp files without doing anything drastic to my computer?

A:speed up computer

Just close down any programs before you attempt to delete those files.  But yup, it's safe to do and will help free up some space.  But really shouldn't slow down your system in any appreciable way.

I bought my new computer 6 months ago and at the time was all excited with the speed....
somehow it has slowed down a lot?
why would this be and what can help me fix this?

does defragmenting help??

A:computer speed

Yes, indeed defraging can help.
A good idea is to run a virus scan as viruses can very often slow your computer down.

Hope this helps.

I need help speeding up my boss's computer. He is only using about 25% of his space, of 74.4 G available, he has 56.2 G free. He hardly has any files, but wants to increase his speed while browsing. Are there any specific settings I can check off or disable to help function improve. He complains that sometimes everything seems normal and other times it is slow...opening the internet, then going to a new page, clicking on tools or whatever may take more than the few seconds that it should. He uses google gmail for email and this is incredibly important. I just had success by removing google.com from compatibility view after his gmail went crazy and wouldn't scroll down, was enlarged, and not loading. Also, he has some virus protection from MS Security essentials, everything looks good, scans daily. In addition I already ran a disk clean up, did not compress files, but deleted the temporary files recommended. Any magic you can help me perform will really help me keep my job, thanks!

ISP dns servers can be erratic at times, especially when under load.
They resolve the domain names.
I am using googles public dns servers.
Might give them a try.
