My compute locks up when running

Q: My compute locks up when running

certain software from different online poker sites. I play at one all the time and never had any problem but when I downloaded a couple of others my system occasionaly locks up. I have to unplug it and then take the battery out.

This problem has happened before. It happens when online sometimes and with an older game program that I run.

My Os is Windows 2000 w service pack 4. I have an IBM thinkpad with a 1.6GHz P4 w/ 261,040 kb ram. I have over 30 gig memory left on my HD.

Preferred Solution: My compute locks up when running

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: My compute locks up when running

generally on all lockups it is usually caused by corrupt video drivers. update the drivers or reinstall them.

About 3 months ago my computer just started randomly locking when I was running 3d games. I wasn't having any problem in the world running 2d games so I was thinking maybe the GPU or video card memory was overheating. So I pulled a fan and heatsink off an old 386 processor I had and fixed it to the GPU and still the same problem.

Since then I've tried using a TNT2 and swapped out or replaced all hardware except for the motherboard and processor. Even tried changing the power supply. All drivers are up to date. I've tried 3 different BIOS revisions. I've tried using at least 5 versions of the Nvidia detonator drivers (I keep them archived in case of problems like this.) It locks up if there's sound being used or sound completely off and if the sound card isn't even in the computer. I'm running DX8.1 and nothing changed, software or hardware, when the problem occurred.

Video card is not overclocked. AGP aperture set in BIOS to 64 meg. I've defragged the HDD recently. Happens with any 3d game no matter how low the settings for the game are set.

Common games being played: CounterStrike, Monkey Island 3, WC3, Ultima Online (3d Client) Q3

System Specs:

Athlon 1.4Ghz
768 meg RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 32meg / TNT2 32meg (TNT2 for testing if it was the vid card)
34.6 Maxtor HDD
Asus A7V133 (not using the onboard RAID at the moment)
SBLive!

Hello:

I've got a problem with my Win XP system. A few days ago after a program conflict and system crash I had to reinstall my DSL utility program/drivers/modem etc...

The installation went well except that something seems to be running now in the background. I can log onto the Web, communicate and run all programs, but there is a regular tone annunciating (sounds like when a USB device connects) a bonging sound which occurs regularly.

Because I thought that there was some sort of conflict I clicked on "Add Hardware Wizard" and got the following message.

"Cannot run two device installations.
You can install only one device at a time, another device installation is underway, when it is finished you can try the Wizard again."

This seems to be the problem....the system apparently is hung up trying to install a device and never can complete that task.

Is there some simple way to stop this process? and in turn turn off the constant tone.

Thank you

Fred Gendler

A:Add Hardware Wizard locks up running in Win XP

Boot to safe mode and see if issue is still present. If the other device is not USB, then it should eventually install.

Also look in device manager and see if there are any bangs (? or !)

Post results.

Hey y'all
I have a problem with my PC. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and leave it idle for a while and then come back to it the whole thing will be locked up. I can move the mouse around but as soon as I click something it will lock up and the time will be locked to the time when it had locked up. The whole thing basically locks up causing the green vista loading mouse circle to replace the pointer. The only way to shut it off is to hold down the power button for about 5seconds. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I'm boggled by this.

Specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)
4Gb Ram
640 GB hard drive
Nvidia 9500GS
Windows Vista Premium 64 bit.

I do have a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall disk

Over the last few weeks, my PC has been having fits running slow, locking up, 1 BSOD (KERNEL.STACK_INPAGE_ERROR), stuttering sound, windows getting locked, mouse pausing and freezing, etc. It frequently requires hard boots as it won't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This happens in safe mode as well.

The CPU usage is often stuck at 100%, even with no applications running. I can't see any pattern to it. It can run fine for a few hours, then suddenly get stutter and lock up.

The only thing has changed recently is that a week or two before this started happening, the CMOS battery was giving error messages on reboots, so I replaced it. I have not been able to see anything wrong in the BIOS settings. Device Manager gives no errors.

I haven't seen any signs of malware, but just in case, I have attached the normal logs. I run ZoneAlarm Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. Virus scans have been negative. I also ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, but it found nothing other than harmless cookies.

I have cleaned/vacuumed out the system (which I do regularly anyway). I removed and reseated all the cards and memory. I checked that all the fans were working.

I have run CleanUp! (also a normal thing on my routine maintenance). The disk is not fragmented. I removed what programs and autoruns I was sure about.

I ran Chkdsk and it fixed some file ... Read more

A question about missing information, which version of JAVA are you running? You can go to java.com: Java + You and check if you have the latest. Also, what are the applications? Maybe someone else had the same problem.

Hi,

Recently IE8 keeps freezing up on my computer. When I go to processes in the task manager, I have multiple instances of "iexplore.exe" running. Most of the instances appear to be trying to connect to "a96-6-188-20.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com". The specific IP Address is: 96.6.188.20.

Is this a virus, malware, etc.? I tried running malwarebytes and that came up empty.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

hi,,,, am i lead to believe that you now think this is not a security issue hence you posted here, (if you do think its a security issue you need to post in the correct forum.) take a look in event viewer for more info related to the crashes,, also post back any info or error codes, also take a look in task manager to see if there are any processes that are using up all the CPU, post those back too, also look in device manager for any yellow triangles and red X's and lastly look in reliability monitor for info,,, click on any red X's in there and post back the info. hopefully its just a dodgy driver. to find all these just type in to search box in start menu.
good luck.

Hi all,

As for my problem, title speaks for itself. Has anyone encounter this from the antivirus 2009 family? If so, how/did you get around it? Id like to get the computer in question fixed, as that nasty side effect filters internet search (like this site, for example). Although, that last symptom there is circumventable by using one of the many proxy sites around.

On that system, my progress is:

Managed to install malwarebytes anti-malware, although this was originally hampered by the problem im asking about!

Program when run locks up at 2200k mem usage. (spybot does the same thing)

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). Plugging in the battery makes it work again. For the sake of prolonging my battery life I ususally run without it when safely docked at home.Anyone else experiencing this? I assume it's a bug?

A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

Ok got a problem that I think I knwo what is wrong, but I'm not sure. Looking for some confirmation on what I think. Or suggestions on what else if you disagree with my diagnosis.

Computer in question:
1 Ghz Duron
ECS K7S5A
256 of some ddr ram
TNT 2 32 meg vid card

I get a call from this lady and she says her computer locks up while on the internet and then the screen goes blank. When she turns it off and back on nothing happens. If she tries it later it will turn on but when she's on the internet it happens again.
So thats the diagnosis she gave me.

Today after work I stopped by her house and used the computer for a bit. She is running WinXP Pro SP1. I checked her antivirus, it needed updating but the defs weren't real old. I then looked in the event viewer, it was clean, no warnings or anything, only the information messages.

So right now I'm thinking wtf? everything seems ok to me that would cause black screens. So I decide to fire up adaware (because I'm about to head out and thinking I might as well clean up the crap she's gotten from using IE while I'm here).

So while AdAware is dling its thing I decide to go to Windowsupdate.com and get some crap dling before I leave (she's on dialup). As those pages are loading up I decide to check her monitor connection just incase thats loose. As I reach back behind I touched her usb cable going to her printer.

A:Video locks (with artifacts)/Monitor shuts off/System still running. Whats wrong?

One place to look for a shorting against the chassis, would be that thin metal plate that surrounds all the PS2/sound/USB/parallel etc. ports on the pack of the PC. This has some very small 'lips' that fit around each individual port. They could easily make a false contact.

Hello, I would like some help because I keep getting this annoying pop up window from my antivirus. I'm not sure what it causes it but from what I've read in forums it seems to be a spyware.

I'm running windows 7 on my macbook pro for reasons.... but this problem is not limited to this computer. My sister have the same antivirus ESET Smart Security and she also have the same problem.

Here are the windows that pops up.
(since the picture is in spanish i'll tell you what it says:
Outbound traffic
Internet

Application: System
Publisher: unknown
Remote computer: amazonaws)

I know I could disable the pop up windows from my antivirus options but the problem is that I shouldn't have to. I would like to remove this spyware for good. Also every time this windows appear it messes up utorrent, although it's probably another different issue.

Oh and before i found about this forum it took an advice and run combofix. I read it would solved my problem in another forum. Probably was not the best idea, sorry. Anyway the windows don't pop up as much as before but they still appear.

So please let me know what I could do to solve this and remove it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners, or the registry cleaner feature of CCleaner. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

I see you have P2P software ( uTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

A reference for the risk of these programs is here

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it. You can do so via Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

just trying to clean out my computer make it run as smooth as possible anybody know a good way to get rid of stuff or some safe programs i could use to prevent viruses, and to keep my computer running good

A:just cleaning out my compute... suggestions

Well first of all I suggest that you manually delete any files that you dont need anymore after which you can then organise all your using files and folders in a file structure. Then I suggest that you install AVG OR Avast which are both freee and very good antvirus software. These will enable you to perform a full system scan and eliminate any viruses present in your system. I also suggest that you do a spyware scan using at least two antispyware applications such as spybot s&d, windows defender (dont really le it personally) avg antispyware etc. It is importat to use more than one spyware application to ensure that any spywarethat is not detected by one program will then be evenually detected by the other. I also recommend that you perform a defragmentation of your system using the defrag tool that comes with windows and also perform a registry cleanup with a program such as ccleaner (free!!) in order to remove unused files from your system. Finally you can also disable some startup program which can sometimes compromise your system performance.

My last but most import advice is that you maintain your system meaning that you perform regular virsus and spyware scan otherwise you will end up with the same situation.

Hope this helps
Happy System Cleaning

Gerchan

I would like to get gaming desktop computer and would like to know if Alienware or computer from Dell or Dell Alienware is good way to go or not.

Are mini computers like from Alienware or from Dell good for gaming.
http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r2/pd.aspx

Are these Alienware or mini computers good for gaming? Or is full desktop tower better?

I was thinking of buying computer of ebay.

Looks like it may be good computer
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Quad-Co...983?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b0d645487

But I think it may be build computer kit. You have to put the computer together.

Buying computer from Best buy you are stuck with brand name computer like Acer or Gateway being very cheap and low budget computers or HP or Asus better and more costly computers.

CyberPowerPC and iBUYPOWER Gamerner PC both over price and not reliable computer lots of lots hardware problems and outdated.

Well build computer kits are good, but you have to put it together and you get no software and windows 8 does not come with it.

And Best buy, office place, business depot or target computers are over price and like 5 years old.

Not sure if I should go for a full tower or mini tower. The computer will be hooked up to my big TV for gaming.

I will also be doing some video editing and sound editing too and some basic Microsoft office apps.

Some games will be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ,Dark Souls,Witcher 2,Dragon Age II,Divinity II ,Diablo ,Mass Effect 3,Far Cry 2,Risen,Fallout... Read more

Good day to all,

This is my first post in this forum and I actually discovered it by searching at the Internet, after having the same problem (installation of Windows 10 new Update 1511- nersion 10586) with my Intel Compute Stick, which was bought to serve me as an everyday-use-quick-access computer on my TV screen.

The Stick was initilally bought about two weeks ago from a major computer store here, in Greece. As soon as I brought it home, I connected it on a screen, attached a USB hub with a USB keyboard & mouse set and an external USB stick of 32 GB capacity. Soon after performing the first settings, the Stick went to Windows updates and after downloading and installed the first available ones, it came to a point, when the update 1511 (newer version 10586 of Windows 10) started been downloaded and installed.

The installation froze at about 76% of the process and I had to shut it down and restart it, getting back to the previous version of Windows 10. I tried several options to repeat that, but it became impossible. At the beginning, when I did several attempts on it, I had the impression that the required free space on the embedded eMMC card of 32 GB (the "system disc" of the Stick) was not enough to accept the update (it requires at least a free space of 15GB on the disc, to be installed). Freezing is often caused by defective memory. Download Memtest 86+ and make a floppy or a CD. Boot with the floppy or CD and let Memtest run for a minimum of 4 full passes and see if it comes up with any errors.

My current irritant, and reason for this post, is pictured in the attached jpeg file.

A small scroller, presumably associated with Tabs, recently set up shop on my taskbar, and ever since has been making a mess of things.

Because of this scroller, open windows and applications are less noticable, more difficult to access, and for the last few days, I've been closing them via task mannager. Apparently designed to hide the clutter near the sys tray, It simply sweeps them under the rug. Today I found tabs still open from 3 days ago.
My question is, how do I get rid of this scroller, and back to the large buttons, that previously lined up down the taskbar, representing each page or window currently open?

IE Explorer 7 w/ XPpro

Thanks for any assistance with this.

A:Tabbed browsing: Just doesn't compute

1 Possible fix : You could try right clicking your taskbar, choose properties, under the taskbar tab uncheck "Group similar taskbar buttons". Then click apply and ok.

Another possible fix is : Right click the taskbar and unlock. Then move the right vertical bar as far to the left as possible but not so far as to remove any icons there. Then relock the taskbar.

Or if they dont work there might be a fix here but it does involve the using the registry ... Reg Fix

I have had this webcam for a long time and when I got rid of my old laptop (webcam worked on my old laptop) i lost the disk and now, a few months later, I am trying to find the downloadable software. But I can't seem to find anything that is compatible with windows 10.   Is there software for hp webcam ew192aa that i can download onto my dell that will work for windows 10. Is it too outdated or will it not work on a dell?   Any help would be appreciated!
