Programs will no open, or error with 'stopped working', cannot fix myself

Q: Programs will no open, or error with 'stopped working', cannot fix myself

So about two months ago most programs on my PC stopped working. VLC and games. Things like GoogleChrome, uTorrent and Dropbox work alright.
I have tried fiddling around and trying to fix things. Nothing has resolved the issue.
PC runs these programs in safe mode. I did not install or download anything during the time it stopped working.
I have been hitting my head against a brick wall, please help!
One 'cleaner' program found system errors. Attached is the chkdsk log. When I try and run chkdsk/f myself, it says it is in use.

Preferred Solution: Programs will no open, or error with 'stopped working', cannot fix myself

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

A: Programs will no open, or error with 'stopped working', cannot fix myself

Please download HDTune and install it to your system.
Go under Error Scan tab and make sure that primary partition is checked and that there's no checkmark on Quick Scan.
Scan will take up to 1 hour , depending on your hard drive size.
If all blocks are green, your hard drive is fine and i wil report to moderator for malware assistance.
IF one block at least turn red, you will have to make a backup and buy a new drive.

Im not sure if this is in the correct area so apologies if it isn't. I've been having this problem for about 2 weeks now where a number of programs fail to open and just say "X" has stopped working. I have tried selecting "check online for a solution" but nothing happens.

I have searched online for any solutions and have tried to run sfc /scannow to check the system files, however this freezes at 87% and after a while says "could not perform requested operation. I will attach the log.txt file from the scan.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and any further questions I will answer

A:Some programs will not open. Just say "X" has stopped working

Hi and Welcome to the Forum
This problem may be caused by a faulty update so can you try a system restore to a date before it started to happen.
if that's no good it cauld be that you have a virus. Run Malwarebytes if the System restore doesn't work.

Hello there TechSupport Forum!

It's been a long while since I've had any computer issues thanks to your well instructed threads.

Just 2 days ago...I went to open some programs (skype is one example) among others. Immediately when I started a call with no video even...an error message came up to say 'Skype has stopped working......' and then it will tell me windows will look for a solution and suggest it. Well it only told me to update the program. In this case I had the latest skype. So not really a solution here.

I have a DV6 HP windows 7 laptop.

When checking event viewer... the error says:

A:Programs have stopped working (causes crash of programs)

I don't remember...nor can I find the rules about bumping a thread. So I know you all are busy, but I still need help with this weird situation. I've restored to an earlier date, disabled all non important processes via msconfig, reinstalled the non working programs. But alas they all are not a solution. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm thinking some .dll file might be corrupt in windows 7. Just unsure how to go about that or find out if that is the case.

Thank you!

I am using Vista 64 bit version,

My problem is most programs stop working.
ones that I have tried using are skype, windows live, registry cleaners... pretty much all programs except a few and of coarse my internet programs are all fine. I tried a clean boot but got no where. Ran sfc /scannow as admin and got some files are corrupted and not all are able to be fixed.

this all seamed to start when I ran a virus scan using avast that I had on this computer for quite some time. It of course found 5 infected files I cleaned them, and it recommended doing something with the registry. well while scanning the reg my lovely computer over heated and shut down, now i am left with this issue .

same thing happens as well in safe mode. Guess i'm doomed to buy windows 7 or find a copy of vista to re install.

Hi all i need serious help.

All of a sudden some of my programs stopped working, for example catalysst control center is suposed to start as soon as vista starts, but now it gives me an error like:

"CCC.exe has stopped working"

Same with some others...

Yes i ran AVG, i ran malware, and superantispyware, none of them finds anything.
I cant even load daemon tools now, it gives me some error: "Engine loading was failed", cant uninstall it, it gives me another error, and some of the programs like netlimiter if i start them from my objectdock dock they automaticly stop working, only when i start them from the normal .exe they dont crash.

All this happened all of a sudden...anyone has any ideas??

Thx a lot in advance,

A:Programs stopped working

Hi Muff

What Firewall are you using? Have you configured your security software so that the Catalyst Control Centre is a trusted start-up program. Is Windows Defender or UAC blocking it from normal start-up. Did you run the Display Driver as an Administrator when you installed it?

Personally I found the Catalyst Control Centre lagging a little on start-up anyway so I only installed the Display Driver instead.

I'm assuming you are running the latest version of the ATI Driver?

I might be wrong, but it may well be a 'Permissions' issue.

One more thing, are you running 32Bit or 64Bit, and if 64, is ObjectDock compatible with it?

Kind Regards

Hi! I am going to explain the whole history to the problem...

I'm using Windows XP but wanted to dualboot with linux, so I started to download it and making my Pc ready for the install, I had to buy a new DVD player so I could read DVD disks ( my old one got broke)... Well Installed it and did some other stuff, did get some problem with the PC at the same time but worked it out with help from a friend. Anyway, after nearly 2 days working with getting all fixed I finally was done today morning. Turned my PC off and tonight I turned it on ready with all the stuff. Then I see that nearly all my desktop icons are "white" also are the ones in "all programs" And when I try to open any of them, programs, games or even my internet browser... (for example):

Windows cannot open this file:
Mozilla Firefox.lnk
Windows needs to know what program created it....etc
And then I can ofc choose to search the web or search the computer after the program...

So my question is, how to fix this? I really want to install linux and dont have my windows damaged MY friends says "reinstall whole windows" but I got so much important data on it so I dont want to.
I got 2 thoughts that maybe caused this damage...
1, Got virus on my Pc I belive, but my anti virus cant find it, it cant open allot of files.. (using NOD32, also ad-aware for spewers)
2, Got a program called CleanUp thats removes stuff like temporary internet files and such.. Maybe it damaged something els... Read more

i recently bought this PC in december. in february i played a round of system shock 1 (one of my favourite games), and it ran fine, no need for DOSbox or any of that silliness. however, in recent weeks, i discovered that my PC no longer likes running some DOS programs, including SS1, the tomb raider gold installer (which is how i discovered the problem in the first place), and a few of the older demos i got off www.pouet.net.

the exact error i get is:

(program path and/or filename, example would be CDSHOCK.exe)
The NTVDM CPU h as encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:c000 IP:dddd OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

the string of random letters and numbers is always the same no matter the program.

what happens is, i run the program, it goes to a black screen then immediately back to windows, complete with error message and beep, i must choose "close" then maximize the DOS window again, which then disappears. if i choose ignore then maximize, i just get the error message again.

cmd.exe runs just fine. several other DOS-based programs work as they should (in other words, they don't really work, but they give me the proper response.) running all DOS programs in DOSbox does not create an error (SS1 works fine in DOSbox, for example... a little slow, though, and i'd rather not use it.)

i have tried every solution i can think of where people had similar issues, but nothing works. i've scanned and re-scanned with nod32 and ad-... Read more

A:some, but not all, DOS programs stopped working

XP just isn't made to run dos programs without the help of third party programs. Some programs do work, others don't and you won't get any help from microsoft since they stopped dos support a looong time ago. My guess is some security update decided some operations your games were doing are now illicit and a security threat for XP.

I stick with Dosbox or VDMsound, whichever works best. Each program has options that allow to speed up or slow down the emulation speed, you may try to play with those settings to get your games running fine.

You may have some luck running your dos programs in compatibility mode (right-click the shortcut => properties => compatibility) but I wouldn't count on that.

Hi everyone,

I have a rather odd problem. I've had Vista Ultimate (or whatever the 64 bit version is called) installed on my computer for almost a year now. Everything has worked perfectly until fairly recently. I noticed that one of my startup programs had stopped working (SoundMax32) and was showing up as an application error. This was around the time I installed the 64 bit version of iTunes, so I figured maybe my audio settings had been changed. The computer continued to work for another 2 weeks, and then yesterday, completely out of the blue, ALL of my programs (startup and otherwise) have stopped loading and are showing the application error message.

The thing I don't get is that Vista still boots up with no problems. I thought initially that the problem was limited to my 32 bit applications, but IE 64 bit doesn't work either?

I'm about 2 days from just reformatting and doing a complete reinstall. But if anyone has any answers I would be grateful.

And no, I did not install any application between the last bootup that was fine, and the one yesterday. I've run windows update and updated everything but the programs still will not load (I'm writing this from my laptop because IE and Firefox give me the same error message). It is very bizarre.

Any help please!

Alright, I'm not entirely sure where to put this thread so I apologize if it is in the wrong spot.

I had a virus a while back (a couple of weeks ago). I received a pop up asking if Trend Micro should block something and I went to click block, and, well... missed. I accidentally allowed it. I ran a scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-malware and got a few viruses or infected objects. Instead of restarting directly after the scan, I waited. Bad choice. After I restarted I got many pop-ups says there was an unhandled win32 exception that occured in [xxxx] the numbers always changed in the []'s (An example of two I just got were GoogleUpdate.exe [4040], mbam.exe [5060] however, googleupdate is not just an exception at [4040] there are other numbers that appear too). If I do click Debug I get sent to Just-In-Time debugger for Visual Studio 2010 and I can;t even use it. I tried scanning some more running programs to fix the registry. I tried running a disk cleaner and defragmenter. It seemed like a good idea.

Didn't really work. It seemed to isolate the issue to just win32 exceptions at GoogleInstaller (when clicking debug it is listed as GoogleUpdate) and RealPlayer. I finally had enough of the problem and did a system restore yesterday. Only problem: I can't go back more than 5 days ago. Right smack in the middle of the issue. I was hoping maybe it might work or I could continue to system restore it further back. Neither of those ideas really worked. I still had the issue (only now... Read more

Recently I've bought a new Mainboard for my computer, because my old one was messed up. (one memory slot was broken, and 3/4 SATA connections was broken.)
Because of this, I had to install Vista again. Not so hard to do, backed it up already, so no trouble.

Now, running the fresh installed Vista, I've ran into some troubles.
1. Every single game I try to play, crashes after a while, (sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after half an hour). It is giving the message: for example: Crysis.exe stopped working.
2. My internet explorer often gets the same message. Most of the times after 15 minutes, but sometimes it runs a lot longer.
3. Some other files stop working too, some .dll's which I can't remember the name of ( I believe one is called Desktop Manager or something like that.)

(quick search in the log files: All Application Errors came up with different .dll files)

You'll understand, that this is really annoying, since it is a fresh install of Vista, so you wouldn't expect any trouble.

Can anyone help me please?

A:Several programs stopped working.

Heh heh, I would expect plenty of trouble from a fresh install of Vista actually, since it shipped with so many bugs. Have you tried installing the service pack (SP1) for Vista?

First, the data. You could remove your hard drive, and install it in a second working computer as a slave. Then you can go into the slave hard drive and copy your files.

You may consider either posting a hjt log in the HJT forum here at BC, or wiping out the data on your hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Let us know which way you want to go and we can give you specific instructions on how to proceed.

I recently got CA Internet Security free with a purchase on Tigerdirect, so I installed it. I didn't like it, so I uninstalled it and went back to AVG Free. Well, now a bunch of programs will not work properly.

MSN Messenger - Opens normally, but can not sign in. It shows an error and if you click "Troubleshoot" it freezes.

Yahoo! Messenger - Opens normally, but can not sign in either.

Internet Explorer - Opens normally, but can not load any site; just a blank screen, until I hit stop. Sometimes freezes in Internet Options menu.

Outlook 2002 - Can send and receive e-mail fine, but sometimes freezes when doing things like adding an account.

WS_FTP - Can access my website and allows me to edit things on the website, but will not let me send things to the website. Gives me an error.

Winamp - Loads after opening it twice, freezes randomly, etc. I uninstalled this.

Windows Media Player 7 - Freezes when first opening. I just use Classic Media Player now.

I know the internet works fine, because I currently use SeaMonkey for my browsing/e-mail and AIM for my instant messaging. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do to fix this? btw, I'm using Windows 2000.

A:Solved: Programs just stopped working

It might not have anything to do with the CA Internet Security software, but it was around that time everything started acting this way. Any tips to get IE, and any of the other programs, to work would be much appreciated. Anyone?

But, I've typed a netsh comment, and the browser is now working 20% of the time. It opens sites, but not all of them + it uses approx 2 minutes to open every single site. I assume they won't open, as it times out.

I can still play games online and use ventrilo + Spotify etc.

Kindly regards..

By far the simplest fix is to use Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.Video: Fixing a problem using System RestoreIf that doesn't help, try restoring an earlier system image or backup. No suitable restore point, backup, or image available? I have had windows 7 for a few months now and have had problems that I could call support for. Now that I can no longer get support, I have 2 programs that have stopped working. "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." yeah, like that will happen.
I have already deleted both programs and reinstalled one. and I still get the same error. Can someone please help me or should I just pay the $$$ to get windows help.

Sirs: After lurking the forums I think I have a unique problem. Am running Windows 7 sp1, amd quad core, 6 gigs of ram. A couple of months ago, after either rebooting or logging back in, my computer began popups saying that varoius programs have stopped working. For instance: "Iomega automatic backup has stopped working". In a box under it: "Check online for a solution and close the program". And in another box: "Close the program". Other programs that quit working at the same time: Mesh operating environment, Adobe reader, Adobe acrobat, IE, Cyberlink, and one or two others that don't come to mind right now. Allmost all the other programs on my computer won't open and give the same popup. My virus program, Avast opens easily, but thats about it. I can open some programs by going to their file location, changing its compatability to Vista and then opening as admin. Threatfire on the other hand won't open unless I change its compatability to windows 7. Anyway, did virus check, ran threatfire, and some other things I can't remember right now. If I restore to an earlier period my computer works OK. That is until I log out/in or reboot. Then it goes back to its screwed up self. I'm reluctant to re-install windows as I have a finance/check writing program I use for my business that is a bear to re-install and get all the files in their proper place. Have begun pulling hair out. Not much left. Time running out. Help!.......Anyb... Read more

Hello to all on this forum,

Some time ago I restored system and after doing that some of the programs, like Autocad, Livemail, and some other .exe do not launch. It's just said 'program has stopped working and will be closed'.

If it's about Live Mail, I tried almost everyghing - sfc /scannow, I tried repairing it, uninstalling, deleting the file where the accounts are stored and so on. I searched internet over three days and tried all given solutions but none of them worked and since then I've started to think that this might not be the problem of Live Mail itself but rather a system problem.

My question is, is it worth trying to repair it in some way that only You guys might know or it's better to reinstall windows using this upgrade option - as far as I know all programs should stay as they are, correct me if I'm wrong, it's important to me. I've got so many graphic programs that I'd rather avoid reinstalling anything.

Thanks for all help!

I just recently got some amazing advice here on there forums and solved some strange problems with my computer.

however, just recently, I've noticed several programs that rely on an internet connection (such as iTunes store and sometimes AIM, nothing illegal) suddenly stopped working.

The iTunes music store simply never connects, AIM sometimes does but mostly doesn't, but the weird part is all the while my internet browser works just fine and at pretty fast speeds. So i'm fairly certain the internet connection is not the culprit, seeing how Firefox works like a dream but some other programs don't.

Also, sometimes both IE and Firefox won't be able to download things online. some things work fine, large files and small, but other items simply cause the searching indicator thing in the corner spin forever with no result, even after several attempts and even restarting my computer and waiting for a while.

I also tried disabling my firewall (though extremely briefly, just to test the problem) thinking maybe some things were just being blocked all of a sudden, but the same things keeps happening. I even tried reinstalling iTunes, IE, and Firefox but the problem persists. it's obviously not a huge urgent problem, but very annoying all the same, especially since not only am I very into media but I make almost all my purchases and downloads online because it's easier, cheaper, and in greater supply than in any local store.

I own a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
Yesterday morning I started experiencing a problem loading iTunes.
At first iTunes just stopped loading, no error messages, just shows up in processes when trying to open it, then a 'Windows Problem Reporting' process flashes up and iTunes disappears.
I thought it was just one of many glitches with iTunes, but after countless attempts to try and do full/clean un/reinstall(s) with various versions, to no avail, I realised there's something else going on.
I ran all my anti-spyware/virus/malware programs, nothing major showed up, generally clean, just some adware tracing cookies.
Programs were: Avast Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware.
I've also run Combofix, but the log is a little beyond my comprehension, it does seem to show up some 'nasties'.
I then gave up on iTunes as I needed to crack on with work, so I went to open Photoshop...
Now that has stopped working as well!
Same thing as with iTunes, shows up in processes on initial loading, then 'Windows Problem Reporting' process flashes up and it vanishes.
This is also happening with 'MusicBee', a new program I installed to try and replace iTunes.
I have tried a System Restore, but I couldn't go back any further than yesterday, thanks to all the un/reinstall(s) of iTunes.
I'm a little stuck as to what to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Vista 32-bit laptop, programs have stopped working...

As a simple fix try running 'SFC /scannow' from an elevated command prompt. If you have corrupted system files, which sounds very possible, this may very well fix them.
To do this, click 'Start - All programs - Accessories'. You will then see 'Command prompt'. RIGHT click on this and select 'Run as administrator'. A black window with white text will now open. Type 'sfc /scannow' at the cursor then press 'Enter'. NOTE there is a space between 'sfc' and /scannow' and do NOT type the quotation marks !
It should now run, it may say it needs you to re-boot first in which case re-boot and it will run. Let it run until it has finished. Depending on your processor and your hard drive this can take 45 - 60 minutes and when it has finished, re-boot and see if things are working again.
If they are, great. If they aren't, post back and further action can be considered.

Today, I opened my PC and as soon as I logged on, Catalyst Control Center: Monitoring program, Windows Desktop Gadgets, ButtonMonitor and OOTag stopped working, all at the same time. I ignored it but the weird thing is there's a new option I've never seen before called ''Debug the program'' but it says No registered JIT debugger [...].

Anyhow, I went and tried to open a game, it immediately, without even trying to load the game itself, say '' 'X' is not responding''.
I tried opening Events Viewer to see what I could have done, but it also crashes and say Microsoft Management Console has stopped working.

I opened system restore to see what points there were and I noticed windows updates' at around 5 am, I do not even recall having updating something.

So, I update my graphic card (which it was already), I then looked through my updates and update to Windows 7 service pack 1 a few hours ago + windows 7 x64 based updates. Restarted my PC, nothing changed.

Any idea on what might be the issue? It really happened randomly, I did nothing unusual before opening my PC for the first time today, it's plain random. I even tried the repair windows update when you boot it with F8, didn't work, my Anti-virus, NOD32 ESET 5 didn't capture any malware. I downloaded SuperAntispyware, I did a complete scan 3 times, all I got was cookies, no malwares whatsoever. Also, I fixed all my registry issues with CCleaner. I re-formated my PC about 3 weeks or a month, so it's quite new.

I've been receiving lots of advice in other Bleeping Computer threads about these issues, but so far nothing has managed to resolve them.
The latest log of all the things I've done is in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/600012/windows-vista-32-bit-sony-vaio-laptop-some-programs-wont-start/
The main issue that started me posting for help was that iTunes & Photoshop suddenly stopped working.
They still don't, in fact, I have completely uninstalled iTunes now, as I've tried numerous clean un/reinstall(s) and it's just not happening...
I can live without iTunes, but not Photoshop. I use it for work. It would be great if I could get both back.
I have run a ridiculous amount of scans for all sorts of issues.
I have noticed, along the way, that certain programs I have been asked to install and run, either didn't install or just wouldn't run.
Whether this laptop is infected or not, or it's just knackered, I don't know. (it is 8+ years old)
Here is my FRST log, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi to you kind persons who are willing to help uninformed people like me.

This is for a Dell Dimension XPS 410 with Vista home premium PC, about a year old-- and yes my one year on-site warranty expired just recently in April. Perfect.

A week ago I got this message upon start-up:

Error loading

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\MP3PLUGIN.DLL in a exception box.

I would just click OK, it went away and nothing seemed wrong.

A few days ago got: Executable for Solitaire game has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working and windows will notify you if there is a solution. Windows did not notify me. my 14 year daughter is distraught without this game. Whines. A lot.

Today got: On access Scaner Service has stopped working. Specified module could not be found. I don't know what program this is.

Also got: Support Soft cmd has stopped working. unknown too

And got: McAcafee Spamkiller agent application has stopped working.
Went to McAfee site and got diagnostic run and McAcafee Spamkiller agent application is now working.

Went to microsft and had hour + long major virus scan done on PC and of course nothing was found. Mcafee ran today at 1AM and nothing was found.

Has any one experienced these issues who would kindly share their expertise??

Thanks, and hope to hear from you.

Best regards,

Hi guys,

I’ve been trying all day to fix some serious issues with my PC, and I’ve just about run out of ideas. If anybody can help me out I’d very much appreciate it!

Here’s the story so far:

1. Woke up this morning and the computer wouldn’t boot. Windows XP Home system with SP2, about a year old, with no hint of a previous problem. Would get to the “Windows XP” splash screen and spontaneously reboot, cycling indefinitely, unable to boot in Safe Mode either.

2. Inserted the XP CD and got into Recovery Console. I tried the following commands and got these responses:

C: 305235 MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
D: \Device\Cdrom0

"bootcfg /scan"
<some standard introductory messages>
Error: failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations.
<and a suggestion to run chkdsk>

"chkdsk /p"
<standard introductory messages>
CHKDSK found one or more errors on the volume

"chkdsk /r"
<the same introductory stuff>
<… and about an hour later…>
CHKDSK has finished checking the volume

"bootcfg /scan"
Same response as before.

3. Undeterred, I typed "exit" and attempted to reboot in Safe Mode. Successful boot!

4. Scanned the entire system with Malwarebytes and avast! (on Thorough setting), both came up clean. Rebooted in normal mode and the system now appears to be running stably.

Alcohol 120% does same thing - burns maybe 10% then says there is a problem.
Nero used to work before on this system (before SP2 update) Tried swapping the drive out with new one - same problem.Tried different media-same problem.
The hardware is fine, the media is fine.
Can burn under explorer, but not under Nero or Alcohol 120%.
Am thinking it's a setting or something somewhere that I missed. Everything used to work fine before SP2.
Using the latest updates from both Nero and Alcohol which are supposed to work under SP2.
Using the latest firware updates on the burner.

After I did the steps pinned at the top of the Securty topic my IE is running blinding fast like it used to, but something got changed in the process of running all those cleaners and virus scanners. It used to be my Start menu and my Favorites menu remembered the most recently used items. So if I oppened the Start menu for example is would only show the last four or five programs I accessed in a catagory, and if I hovered the pointer over the directory it would then expand the menu to show all the programs. Same for the Favorites menu. They do not seem to be working any longer. If I open my Favorites or Start menus they expand completely and I have to hunt for what I want to open. How can I turn this very convenient "remember" feature back on?

I'm guessing you're using CCleaner? When it starts look at the options it presents on the left under Windows and Applications tabs. It deletes everything being checked. Decide if you want to uncheck things like History, Recent Documents, MRUs (Most Recently Used).

Hi, I recently got infected with a virus disguising itself as an antivirus program called "Antivirus Action". I looked up some info online and followed the directions that I found here: Remove Antivirus Action (Uninstall Guide). I ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and deleted the files it told me to.

It detected the Antivirus Action and about 10 other files so I deleted them. I tried to make sure that no important files were being deleted, but I don't know much about computers so maybe it did. When I restarted and logged onto my account I got a few notices saying these (and other) programs had stopped working: WMI Provider Host, Windows Explorer, Microsoft Sync Center. I can't remember the other ones but those are the ones I wrote down. When Windows Explorer stopped working my desktop icons and taskbar disappeared. I tried restarting again and this time Windows Explorer didn't stop working, but whenever I try to open something like Task Manager or Word Processor, I get the same 'stopped working' error message.

After one particular restart I also got a notice saying "logon.scr - Application error. The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK to terminate the application" but that has happened only once so far. Sometimes after restarting, Windows Explorer and some other programs stop working immediately and all I'm left with is a black screen and I have to force shut down but usually Windows Explorer won't stop working until a few minutes after e... A:Removed Antivirus Action and now certain programs have stopped working

Welcome, the security people will determine if the virus is still present. Until that time perform a clean boot. If everything works you will be able to correct it yourself, by following clean boot
If it does not work, but does in Safe Mode, it is probably a driver.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I have 3 programs that stopped working, they will not load up, and I believe that The latest Windows updates are responsible. These programs are Inworldz Beta Viewer, Imprudence Viewer, and Second Life Viewer. They have always worked fine for me until Wednesday when suddenly none of them would load up. The next day, Windows 7 didn't want to load up. I had to restart the computer a couple of times before it did.

I have tried system restore, but it fails every time. I tired sfc/scannow command, but it doesn't find anything. Avast antivirus doesn't find any threats, although it finds some "warnings" that it won't seem to do anything about. I can upload an image of those warnings if it would help. Malewarebits doesn't find anything.

The only thing that has changed on my computer that I'm aware of since Wednesday, when Inworldz was working, was Windows installed some updates. So I'm guessing that caused the problems.

I have been advised elsewhere that I should do a Windows 7 Repair, but the process sounds confusing as heck. A complete clean reinstall of Windows 7 sounds easier. But, regardless, if the problem was caused by Windows updates, wouldn't the problem just return when Windows updates itself again after I've done all of that? That's a lot of work only to have the problem return.

I noticed that these 3 programs have log folders. They might keep crash files if someone can make sense of them. I might be able to upload the log files if th... Read more

A:3 programs stopped working, I think Windows updates are responsible

I've replied in your other thread as well. You might try System Restore in Safe Mode, and see if that will work (SR has never been reliable for me)

Safe Mode

You might hold off on the Repair Install, but it is pretty straight forward. If you can Clean Install, you can do a Repair Install

Repair Install

IF it was caused by Windows Updates, the System Restore may be your easiest fix, if you can get it to work.

When I right click on a JPEG file in 'My Computer' and then move the mouse over 'open with', instead of the list of programs I get another box saying 'open with' which does nothing when I click on it. Very frustrating. Means I have to open Photoshop elements and search for the file from there. Slow and back to front. Any Ideas?

This is weird. I can't open any links from my email (Outlook) I can't even login to my Internet Explorer version 7. I can't even access any links from my desktop. Outlook mailer is working fine. It's the internet part that's causing the prob. All apps appear to open from desktop etc. I am using XP Home.

I have a few PDF files sitting on my desktop and when I click on those I get AcroRd32.exe - Ordinal Not Found. The Ordinal 481 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll - However the app will open after a few clicks of the mouse.

I can open Firefox no problem. I use Googlemail and that's OK and all links from that open OK in Firefox. I mainly use Firefox which is a far superior browser but I do need ie7.

I did a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware test and the logs don't show any infections.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me resolve this ie7 issue. Just a thought.... what if I downloaded the new ie8 version which I would have to do from Firefox, would that be a feasible solution?

Thanks for any help, will much appreciated.

I experienced the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS -- at this same time frame!

This is a PANDA problem.

I have Firefox and Chrome also installed -- they work fine, no problems with them.
