Lenovo, please add LVFS compatibility for Thinkpad A485

Q: Lenovo, please add LVFS compatibility for Thinkpad A485

Can we please have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS)?According to the website https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devicelist I can see that fairly new Thinkpads like the P52/P72 are already supported. I do not mind waiting (within reasonable time frame) for Lenovo to fix the BIOS issues but at least I would like to be able to update my system without relying on Windows. Can we please have an update on anything revolving this machine? Is LVFS support coming or not? Is a BIOS update planned fairly soon so that I can stick with Windows for a bit longer? Please shed some light on the situation. A simple yes is coming or no is not will suffice so that we can all move on... Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,

I can't answer your immediate question, but I'm posting to make sure you know there's a way to get there. Perhaps you're already aware but others may not be...

It still requires Windows, but that could be in a VM if you don't have a Win box handy. The Windows update exe includes a tool to make a bootable flash drive. Instructions in the readme.

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r0wuj37w.exe

I realize it's not ideal but at least it's possible.

I noticed and issue with the ThinkPad A485 (AMD Ryzen) and DisplayPort audio. If using either the Lenovo Pro dock or the Lenovo USB-C dock, I'm unable to get sound to come through my Acer B247Y 24" monitors using a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. The monitors have built-in speakers. It seems Windows 10 thinks it's sending the audio through to the monitors, but nothing comes out. Connecting the HDMI port on the side of the A485 to HDMI on the monitor will produce sound. Using a DisplayPort to female HDMI adapter from the back of either docking station and then connecting an HDMI cable to the adapter and then to HDMI on the monitor will also produce sound. There are no settings on the monitor that seem to do anything for it. I can select the Acer AMD High Definition Audio source in Sound Properties and the little equalizer meter moves when you right-click "Test sound", just no audio comes out using DisplayPort to DisplayPort. I'm not sure if this is an issue with USB-C and DP Alt-Mode which the A485 uses for either the Pro dock or USB-C dock. This does not seem to be an issue with an Intel-based machines using USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 or just Intel and DisplayPort audio. Other testing I've done.1. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer monitor with the Pro dock and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock using a ThinkPad T480. DisplayPort to HDMI will also produce sound.2. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer mo... Hi, It seems that this latest BIOS version (1.02) is causing a few different performance issues for the ThinkPad A485. Once obtaining my A485 I ran some synthetic benchmarks to judge CPU performance. After updating to the latest BIOS, I have noticed a decrease in performance on the order of about 10%. It seems that this BIOS update has allowed the CPU to exhibit more stable performance and CPU throttling behavior under constant load, e.g. as seen in the updates to this article: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-A485-Ryzen-5-Pro-Laptop-Review.334528.0.html but at the cost of some overall performance. Adding to this, after having owned a ThinkPad A485 with a Ryzen 5 2500u and one with a Ryzen 7 2700u, it seems as though Lenovo's power management is aggressively holding back the Vega 10 GPU in the Ryzen 7 2700u, as opposed to the Vega 8 GPU in the Ryzen 5 2500u. Previously, in CineBench R15 (https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/) benchmarks, my A485 with the 2500u would achieve ~37fps during testing, while hardware monitoring software would show that the GPU was achieving a clock speed of about 800mhz. With my new A485 that has the Vega 10 GPU, it is impossible to achieve more than ~25fps under the same test and testing conditions and the hardware monitoring software shows that the GPU can not reach a clock speed higher than what I believe to be the near-base clock of 400mhz. With both laptops, this testing was performed with the Windows po... Read more

I just updated the Bios on my machine hoping for the performance to start going further to becoming at least on par with the E485/E585, but to my horror, it now throttles even worse! What used to be a stable 2.5Ghz on the CPU during a Cinebench run on high performance mode, resulting in an underwhelming but acceptable 530-560cb is now 2.0Ghz! This barely puts it in the 450-480cb range, which is almost as bad as quiet mode on the previous bios. This is completely unacceptable. If the E485/E585 can get 600cb consistently, so can the A485. The cooling isn't the problem, just stop limitting the laptop and let it get a little louder/hotter so we can get the performance we have been advertised! 70 degrees is _not_ a suitable temp limit in high performance mode. Please try and fix this. This could be the best Ryzen laptop around, but right now, you're just a fool for buying this over the E485. Here's a look at my findings https://imgur.com/a/qXJS2Bs

Hi, The ThinkPad A485 currently suffers from the same issue as the E485, where if typing on the keyboard quickly, jumbles up the letters. This appears to be a firmware bug as I have tested in in Windows and Linux, and yet it persists. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/E485-strangely-unresponsive-keyboard/td-p... Could I please also have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via LVFS (fwupd.org)? If you need any more information please ping me. Cheers

I'm loving my new A485 but I have 2 issues that I'm unanble to solve. First:Silent/Perfomance toggle is only showing up sometimes? There is this little speedometer in the taskbar that is either bleu or orange depending on your silent or performance setting. But often this toggle is missing from my taskbar after a sleep / hibernation or full restart. I tried almost everything to figure out what could trigger this issue but I haven't really figured out what it could be... All software is up to date and I'm running Win 10 1809   Second:Installing a second SSD in the wwan port (m.2 2242)Is this even possible? I inserted a new M.2 2242 SATA SSD with 512GB but it does not show up anywhere in the Disk manager or in MS dos (diskpart).  A little help would be welcome for this new Thinkpad user

I am testing the new models of Thinkpad A485 units Model Type 20MV S00U00.OS installs just fine.I have the drivers for enterprise that were downloaded from the lenovo site, they installed just fine.I have a script that as part of the setup it installs around 38 wireless profiles and its the same script that we use in all our models. On this model is causing a BSOD pointing to the "rtwlane.sys" file.  after some research I have downloaded the latest driver from Realtek.  This did not help.I added a pause command on the script so that the script pauses after each individual profile is installed to see if its one particular profile causing the issue. Each time that I run the script, the BSOD happens at a different profile.

A blue screen error (also called a stop error) can occur if a problem causes your PC to shut down or restart unexpectedly. When you experience this type of error, you won?t be able to see things like the Start menu or the taskbar on the screen when your PC is turned on. Instead you might see a blue screen with a message that your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.

Hello, I have recently acquired my very first Thinkpad, an A485 and although I am pretty happy with build quality I am very disappointed with the firmware related issues regarding performance as well as Lenovo's surprising ignorance towards the multiple open issues posted in this very forum. I thought that this a support forum where people post their issues in order to get some answers from Lenovo support employees. I do not like complaining and I know that replying might take some time but why cant we get a simple, "we are investing the issue please stay tuned for further updates". The silence involving any post that has to do with the A485 really worries me and considering that some posts provide hard evidence of the issues in question, I was expecting a much speedier response from support staff. Please allow me to elaborate, https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/A485-keyboard-and-firmware-issues/m-p/4218324A485 keyboard and firmware issues related topic posted on 2018/09/25 - still no official answer from any support staff https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Thinkpad-A485-Bluetooth-not-turning-on-Linux/td-p/4219...Bluetooth firmware issues related topic posted on 2018/09/26 - still no official answer from any support staff https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/ThinkPad-A485-BIOS-1-02-issues/m-p/42293...ThinkPad A485 - BIOS 1.02 issues related topic posted on 2018/10/05 - still no official ... I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

I ordered a P50 and plan to install a separately ordered M2 SSD but am confused by the variety of options here. There are multiple types of M2 connectors and sizes out in the market and unfortunately I could not find  exacts specs on the M2 in the P50/P70. What do the 2 bays offer? I was planning an m2 850 EVO (N5E500BW 2280 size which comes with B&M key connector). Will this work? According to cruical the MX200 which has the same size and connector is compatible. On the other hand I have seen reports by people putting in the samsung 950 pro which comes with an M-Key connector. M.2 drives come in several flavors:
- NVMe (PCIe)
- AHCI (PCIe)
- SATA

The M.2 850 EVO drive you're referencing is a SATA M.2 drive.  This should be supported in either of the M.2 slots on P50.

Each of those slots is capable of supporting M.2 PCIe drives (NVMe or AHCI) as well.  Note that AHCI drives should be supported natively by win7/8.1/10, but NVMe drives will require a driver to work with win7 (support for NVMe is native to win8.1 and win10).

You'll need one of the M.2 trays for each M.2 drive (regardless of type) you intend to install in the P50.  Note that typically M.2 drives will install with the components facing down in the carrier.  There should also be a thermal pad on the bottom of the carrier.

There is an easy way to distinguish whether a M.2 drive is SATA or PCIe based.  SATA M.2 drives have two notches in the edge connector, while PCIe drives only have one.

Here's a pic that should help:

Hello.  About 2 weeks ago I purchased Thinkpad S1 Yoga (20C, 8GB model). It is a great little machine and I'm getting used to the stylus. But it is quite small and light for my hands and it gets tiring after about 30 minutes. What are compatible pens with it? I would like an eraser too so I don't have to hold the side button. I have a T500 that I've used for a couple of years and it does well enough for me but I thought about using the slot occupied by my Gobi 2000 WAN card to install a M.2 SSD drive for additional storage.  Specificially, I chose a Samsung 850 EVO.   Windows 7 will not recognize it as anything other than a "Bluetooth Peripheral Device" and cannot locate drivers for it.  Samsung Magician will not recognize it, either, and I do not see anything in the BIOS that would allow me to activate the device.  At any rate, my O/S reads the device but cannot load drivers for it. Am I correct in concluding that I cannot use a M.2 storage device in this particular model? Thanks!

I just tried to upgrade the memory in my Thinkpad A31 (2652 XXL) with a 512Mb chip which was supposed to be compatible (FRU 10K0032). The computer didn't like it. I had downloaded the installation instructions from IBM which said to only use PC133 SODIMM. The 512 is a PC2100. I pulled the 256Mb chip that came with the computer, but it didn't say whether it was PC133 or 2100. I wrote down the numbers from it and did a search, which came up with the same make and number, but it said it was a PC2100 too. According to the compatibility chart at the Lenovo website, A31's are supposed to be compatible with PC2100, and A30's are compatible with PC133. The instructions I downloaded are for both A30 and A31, but they make no distinction regarding the PC133 only warning. Anybody know what's up with this? Should I buy a PC133 chip?

A:ThinkPad (T430) battery compatibility issue

HelloThe batteries for T410/420 are not compatible with T430, even Lenovo genuine ones. Because of T430 features hardware authentification of the battery installed. The batteries for old laptops like T410/420 don't have such features (authentification chips inside). This chip missing causes the battery being installed in the T430 can't be charged. So, you have to purchase Lenovo original battery for T430.

Lenovo original batteries for T430 are backward compatible with T420

A:Lenovo H50-50 GPU compatibility

hi Flupheh,

Welcome to the Forums.

The highest GPU that I've seen to work with the H50-50 is the GTX 750Ti as disccused in this thread and if the mobo can take this card, it's likely that it can also take the GTX 960.

As for fitting the card, you're right. From this H50-50 motherboard, the HSF of the GTX 960 may hit the mobo chipset (PCH), especially if you get the twin frozer version (i personally have this GPU on a custom gaming rig but it's the ASUS GTX 960 Strix).

In addition, the motherboard uses a 14-pin ATX power connector so you will need to get a 24pin to 14pin cable (like this item) for the Corsair PSU to work.

If you're already decided to upgrade the unit then the only way to know is to try it out and re-assembly the mobo on the new case but in case it fails, you can salvage the CPU and use an aftermarket H81 or higher mobo that supports the CPU.

Regards

Windows Task Manager says that there are 4 RAM slots, but I can see only two. Anyway, I bought a 4 GB Kingston RAM (DDR3L, 1600MHz) and installed it myself as my laptop is out of warranty. When I run memory intensive applications, the OS crashes and gives a blue screen. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Hello guys, I have this Lenovo G50-70 20351 i7 4th Gen. I want to upgrade my ram (4GB DDR3 1600MHz) to 16 GB. Does G50-70 20351 supports DDR4? Or should I stick on DDR3L RAM?

A:Lenovo G50-70 RAM Compatibility

Hi monpinoliad,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Platform specification for your model:
16GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets

DDR4 would not fit on the slot if you notice the slot pin difference and do not support DDR4.

You can use DDR3L 2 x 8GB  PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L to maximize it to 16GB similar to this discussion.
OEM recommended ram listed in the hardware manual here (page item12 page 8).

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Hello everyone. I want to upgrade my Lenovo G50-45 with a SSHD and i was wondering if it is compatible. My specs are these:Lenovo G50-45 80E3CPU: AMD E1-6010 APU with AMD Radeon R2 Graphics, 1.35GHzMotherboard: Lancer 5B2Motherboard Version: SDK0F82993 WINBIOS Vendor: LenovoBIOS Version: A2CN25WW(V.1.07)BIOS Supported Standards :  DMI, ACPIBIOS Expansion Capabilities : PCI, USBThe SSHD i want to buy is SEAGATE ST1000LX015 FIRECUDA GAMING SSHD 1TB SATA3And the RAM is RAM CORSAIR CMSO8GX3M1C1600C11 8GB SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600MHZ(I think it is up to 16GB compatible)Also, i was wondering since the CPU is not that good is it going to speed up if i buy these? And is a SSHD a good choice or should i get an SSD instead? I have heard that i cannot store files for a long time in SSD since it gets trimmed, so maybe it deletes stuff. I want to be able to run fast heavy programs and store files. Thank you for your time.

The h10 is not very strong and I would be great to get a cheap egpu so I can run games well, is there any compatible with my computer? At Best Buy I was told I couldn't replace the graphics card.
