Preferred Solution: X1E with Linux - Sleep/Wake works with Ubuntu 19.04 !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am pleased to report that after upgrading my X1E (4K, 8750) from Ubuntu 18.10 to 19.04, sleep/wake has worked every time! With 18.10, the machine would appear to sleep (ie suspend) - the screen would go dark and the power lights would slowly fade on and off. But it would fail to wake properly - I had to cycle the power and reboot. I would always be jealous of the Pop!-OS users who had sleep/wake long ago. But the upgrade to 19.04 brought sleep/wake to Ubuntu too, even with two external displays: a 4K on the USB-C/DisplayPort, and a HD on HDMI. Jim

Hi Everyone, I've installed Ubuntu 18.10 on my new-ish 4K X1E. I'm pretty happy with it - just about everything seems to work OK, and its performance compared to my W520 shows it's about 2.2x faster at video rendering (yes, I was hoping for more). But the current gotcha is that I can't just close the lid to put it to sleep and then open it again to wake it up. When I close the lid, it appears to sleep: the screen goes dark and the red light on the cover transitions to slow-blinks. But when I open the cover, the screen stays dark, and all I can do is long-press the power button to shut it down and restart. So I'm wondering if this problem is unique to Ubuntu, or does sleep/wake work on other Linux distributions? In particular, Pop!_OS has been proclaimed to work right out of the box: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2018/12/09/heres-the-best-linux-distro-for-your-lenovo-t... (The author says that sleep works - it does for me too - but does it wake up? LOL :-) If sleep/wake works for some other distribution, then perhaps it'll eventually be ported to Ubuntu - or is that just wishful thinking? Thanks! Jim

Something has recently changed and I can no longer wake up my Win7 Ultimate PC from Sleep state using mouse movement or "Sleep" button on multimedia keyboard. I have to push the power button on the PC itself. This worked fine up until a few days ago. I did not make any changes to the power settings. I checked and the settings appear to be what they always have been.

Suggestions are welcome!

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

OK,
My config is HP G6 1075 SA with W7 Home Premium 64 bit pre-installed. It was working well until last week when I decided to install Debian Linux. I am no N00B to Linux and have installed it probably 100s of times. Debian installed and booted well but Windows BSODed with an error 0x0000225 cannot access drive. I formatted C and attempted to reinstall Windows 7 but it is unable to detect the HDD. I accept terms of license and move on to the point of choosing disks but nothing shows up. (There is an option to choose drivers. Where do I locate them? The HP website isn't helpful and I can't even find my product let aside the drivers)

I have already tried :
1. Partitioning an NTFS file system in Debian. Doesnt show.
2. Deleting a partition in Debian and attempt to see the free space in W7 Installer. Didn't work.
3. Try to do the BIOS setting thing (Change SATA option from AHCI to compatible or something). I could find no such setting in BIOS. The BIOS was severely limited with only option of switching on fan.

What do I do ?
The chipset is Intel HM55 if that helps and harddrive is SATA 5400 rpm 500GB.

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from Rrecipester.org and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Files uploaded in the attached zip:
. Windows warning after reboot
. Windows dump and xml files (2 = 1 each)
. Powercfg -energy report
I wanted to correct the thread title, but was unable to do it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Hi all, I'm having a problem that is becoming more and more frequent. Usually, when you leave your laptop alone for long enough the screen will turn off and the laptop will go to sleep. I definitely know it's sleeping because the green power button will be doing the slowly dim and undim thing. However, I've been having an issue where my laptop's screen will go black, but the computer won't go to sleep. It's like stuck in a limbo before the computer goes to sleep and the screen is black but won't go fully to sleep. I know this because the green light stays on like it's on. But when I move the mouse or type anything, nothing happens. It's perpetually stuck in this state where the screen is dark and nothing will shake it out of this state. If I close the lid, the laptop stays in this state until it runs out of battery. My only solution is to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power button.  I'm not sure how to correctly phrase my qustion, and thus, I can't really find any topics that seem to have the same problem.  Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a solution for this? My laptop is a X1 Carbon Thinkpad and I've had for around a year and half.  Thanks!

I have been struggling with this for weeks now.I have a brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen laptop. Windows 10.Upon delivery I had noticed that the laptop woke by mouse or keyboard stroke and there was NO power management tab in device manager mouse/keyboard (which usually allows to unflag the option).I had managed to fix it through a mix of BIOS options, registry editor etc. A few days ago I had a problem with connecting HDMI monitor. I have thus updated the driver of Intel UHD Graphics 620. The monitor now works properly, but...I am back in trouble with the sleep option. Currently there is no sleep among the options in the power button. There is no sleep option in power options. If I go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings,  and select "Change settings that are currently unavailable" there is no sleep checkbox. Already tried:- Regedig Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, CsEnabled is set to 0.- Edit group policy. All policies relating to sleep are set as "Not configured".- Reinstalled drivers for Intel UHD Graphics 620, no improvement. Any way to go back to previous driver? Any help? Thanks

Which video chip? Intel or nVidia? I might actually suggest Ubuntu 16.10 to better support the newest hardware. I am actually sending this on a 6th gen HP laptop with Intel video running Kubuntu 16.04 which is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop instead of the default Gnome. You don't ever expect Linux to "just work"; it often requires some tweaks but the support community is second to none and I guarantee you can get all the hardware working as long as you have some basic Linux skills or are willing to acquire them.

Win 7/Win XP/Ubuntu Linux Tri-boot

I have a PC that is currently a dual boot between Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu Linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron). The two operating systems are on separate physical drives. Ubunutu is on the PC?s original 250 gig drive (the primary) and Win 7 is on a 1 TB Seagate internal drive that I added later (the slave).

I already discussed dual booting with Ubuntu and Win 7 on a Linux forum. I installed each OS completely independently of the other. I installed Ubuntu first without the other drive installed. I later disconnected the 250 GB primary drive and installed Windows 7 to the 1 TB drive as if Ubuntu were not even present on the PC. Later I reconnected and edited a file known as menu.lst in Ubuntu?s feature known as ?Grub?. Grub looks at the file and gives me the choice of Windows 7 or Ubuntu when I boot up.

Now it?s a long story, but I need to add Windows XP to my choices. I?m told on the Ubuntu forum that I can temporarily disconnect the Ubuntu drive and set up XP on the 1 TB drive as a dual boot with Bootloader handling the choice between Win 7 and XP. The idea is to get it running right and later reconnect the Ubuntu drive. Grub will give me the choice between Ubuntu and Windows; then if I choose Windows, Bootloader will give me the choice between Win 7 and XP. I could live with that.

So the Ubuntu drive is disconnected. We don?t have to worry about that in this thread. If I have any trouble with Grub, I?ll... Read more

Tom, I think the answer to your question is on the first sentence of the Tutorial how to load the SATA drivers: "When you install Win XP, setup can not find your Hard Drive."

So, if setup can find your HD, you should be good to go.

One remark: installing XP after Windows 7 is a bit more complicated, you will have to repair Windows 7 boot file to add XP. You have mentioned the tutorial, so you shoudl be good to go. I just highlight it since it can be a stumbling block.

Regarding the floppy disk thing, from what I know it is XP's idiosyncrasy, it doesn't allow drivers to be loaded with USB drives. It is from a time there were no USB drives...

A:Motherboard with Ubuntu/Linux support

Is there a specific component on that motherboard that you're having problems with? I can't imagine that the motherboard is not "compatible" with linux - in fact, I've found threads with people using Ubuntu with that mobo. I also find it odd that you'd have a Windows Vista issue with that mobo since most of the users I see online who use it are running Vista or 7 64-bit. Perhaps you have a faulty motherboard and it's not a problem with the model itself.

I am going to try and install Ubuntu 6.10 on a spare machine (PC). I downloaded the .ISO file but don't know how to proceed in setting up a bootable CD. I don't think I will need to dual boot so will be Linux only PC. The PC is a PII 700 with 192MB RAM. It is very basic with just a CDROM and floppy. I don't know much about the Linux OS flavors but have Ubuntu in my hand so would like to use that. How do I make a bootable CD from/with the .ISO file

A:Making the move to Ubuntu Linux - help!

The .iso file is already bootable. Just burn it using the "burn image" feature of your favourite CD-burning program.

I currently partitioned my drive so I can have a dual boot of Windows 7. How would I go about deleting the Ubuntu partitions, so I have just Windows 7? I don't want to just delete the partitions because the computer boots off of GRUB. Can you guys help me out?

Thanks in advance,
David

Note: Not quite sure if this in the right place, sorry if it isn't...

Although I was quite the authority on G2 SSD's way back when we were all much younger, I am now a bit out of touch. Prices have of course plummeted since I purchased my Intel and Samsung SSD's. That much I do know. Who is reliable now? Well, that I don't know.

Specifically, I need an SSD for my Linux Ubuntu computer - for OS and Programs.

Since THE manufacturer changes from year to year, I would appreciate knowing which mfr. now makes the best "set it and forget it" SSD.

Please understand that I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life reading reviews but would prefer to be lazy and rely on the sage judgment of SevenForums members.

Yes, I know that was patronizing.

I just bought a 128 Gb Samsung 840 Pro about a month ago and I must say that I am very pleased with it. Great performance and rock solid so far.

Hi all, I have recently bought a HP Elite book 840 G3 and installed Linux/ubuntu 16.04. Everything works properlyexcept one thing which is really problematic for me : the VGA output does not work and I am not able to getany image of the computer. I have tested it on more tan 20 videoprojectors and I get only one casewhere I can send the image to videoprojector, all other cases nothing was possible. On the other hand,as I also have Windows 7 installed on a double boot, everything worked out properly with windows. Is there a known incompatibility in the graphic card or whatever works for the VGA outputwith Linux/Ubuntu 16.04 ? Is there a way to solve this issue ? Thanks Cyril

I have a dual boot with ubuntu and 7, right now i am using ubuntu and the look seems very crisp compared to windows. I am not talking about the theme, its the text and the way it looks when using the browser. To me i would say maybe it has a better resolution, thats the best way i can describe it. I really have no idea how to use ubuntu so i will stick with windows but its just very sharp and clean how linux looks.

A:Give windows the linux/ ubuntu look?

That's a strange post, because 9 times out of 10, the complaints seem to go the other way.

As a Ubuntu user myself, I haven't noticed what you are describing, so I'm unsure how to translate it to the Windows world. For me, things look good in both Ubuntu and Windows 7.

Hi, I understand that there is a bug in the v1.25 Insydeh20 BIOS which effects serveral laptop models including the Aspire F5-571 which stops the installation of Linux distributions. There are older versions of the BIOS available for other models (E5-573G) which rectify the problem, but none available for the F5-571. My question is: Would the bios software for the E5-573G the same as the BIOS for the F5-571. Thanks Regards

A:BIOS, F5-571, UEFI, Linux / Ubuntu

It happens the same to me, with exactly the same model too. I'm desperate...

I installed Linux Ubuntu onto my laptop, When i enter the boot manager to attempt to boot Ubuntu it just goes black for a couple of seconds and then starts windows. there are no error dialogues, it just shows black and then boots windows.P.S. I went through the entire linux installation process.

A:Unable to boot Linux Ubuntu

@_Potato HP only warranties their PCs for usage with the OS that comes preinstalled. IF you replace that or add a different OS, then you assume full responsibility for maintaining that other OS -- as HP then provides no assistance on that.Win10 PCs nearly all use UEFI and that poses special problems for installing Linux distros: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2147295Your best bet for Linux support, since HP does not provide Linux drivers, is to contact the support forum for the Linux distro you are trying to install -- in this case, the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/Good Luck

I connected a wireless network on my computer, Linux Ubuntu OS but i can't access any webpages for some reason. I have no idea what might be causing this, tho i had Windows with norton protection previously installed on it so i don't know if its still there, cause i didn't remove anything or make backups as i tought it would delete everything automatically lol. If you know what might be causing this, just tell me what to do instead of explaining it so much... Computer-ish cause i don't know shait :monkey:

A:Can't connect to the internet with Linux Ubuntu :O

Hit ALT+F2, type gnome-terminal & hit enter.

Then type (in the new application window) ping www.google.com. What does it say ?

Also type ifconfig & what does that say ?

Are you sure that your computer is properly connected to the wireless network ?

Hi,

I'm planning on purchasing the following laptop:

Ubuntu Linux version 10.04
Intel® Celeron™ Processor ULV U3400 (2M Cache, 1.06GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Aberdeen Silver for WLAN
13.3 inch HD WLED Display (1366x768) with Anti-Glare
2.0MP Webcam with Digital Mic for Win 7
2.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 1 DIMM
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD (Intel GHA HD)
Dell Wireless 1702 802.11n/BT3.0 Combo

For the $450 price point, I really like what is being offered, except that I don't want Linux as the OS and would rather install Windows 7. I recently did purchase Windows 7 so I was wondering if it is possible to install Windows 7 in place of Linux OS that it comes with?

Since there is not CD/DVD-Rom, what would be the best option to do it?

In addition, is the process of deleting Linux and installing Windows 7 pretty complicated? I just dont want to mess up the laptop, like drivers etc. If Windows 7 can be installed, only then will I purchase this laptop.

I've been trying to find a proper instructions link to do the above, but no such luck so far.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

hi guys,

for those who doesn't know , Kali Linux (ex-Backtrack) is a powerful forensic distro based on Debian, but many of us use Ubuntu (or variants) because it is easier to handle.

so in this tutorial, i will show you how to proceed to add Kali repositories to get Kali tools in Ubuntu.

i am using Kubuntu Trusty personally so this tutorial will reflect it; you have to adjust the procedure slightly if you use Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu or/and with an older kernel

1- open your Software Center/Manager, the application that allows you to pick various softwares (Muon Discover, etc..)

2- go to each link below, click on technical details , select your ubuntu version; important , Trusty is not available yet so you have to choose Raring instead.

Code:
https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux1

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux2
3- click on Source tab , then "add source"

Spoiler

4- copy the links below then add them one by one in order to the source (step 3).
For example for my Kubuntu Trusty 14.04 i have to use Raring

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux1/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux2/ubuntu raring main
5- close and relaunch your software center to see if the lines above are added.

6- now ... Read more

A:[How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

I saw that a while ago on HF. I thought it was interesting, then one of my friend told me to not do that as I could "break my system". Apparently, doing that would basically apply Kernel patches for one Kernel to another and it could lead to system instability.

What would you recommend ?

I was originally using Ubuntu 7.04 on this computer. But Due to A MAJOR problem that nobody has provided me with a fix for and Im tired of waiting. I want to know which Distro would be right for me.

Im going to be using it as a primary OS and IM going to keep Windows around for gaming. Im currently on a Dual boot system with Ubuntu 7.04 and XP Pro

The reason I want to replace Ubuntu is because my Lite On SATA CDburner / DVD burner combo drives DOES not exist peroid to it, and since IM a linux newbie and the Linux pros are basically being useless to me by not even seeming interested in helping me (some community heh) and the ones that are trying to help dont speak newb, or are just as confused as I am.

and IM sure you agree with thats the ONLY Disk drive on your computer and you cant use it with the OS of choice, its time to find another OS!

So Im going to be using Linux to surf the web, download, play music, burn cds in mp3 format to listen to in my car, chat with friends, and do basic general use stuff, and just keep my dual boot of XP for playing video games.

I want something as close to Ubuntu as possible since BEYOND that CD/DVD issue that ruined that OS for me, I REALLY liked Ubuntu though I cant see how people say its the best when its so ridden with bugs and apperantly has so many issues with SATA drives!
