Update XP License

Q: Update XP License

There are two XP installations that have illegal copies of XP on the PCs. When the user goes to the Internet, and tries to pull down the SP2, it gives the error message, not a valid product ID # not to mention not having the Genuine XP sticker / # entered.

With that being said, I recommended they purchase 2 full XP Pro versions with SP2. My question is once we get this, how do I update the product ID# on each of the PCs?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

IIRC, you'll have to contact MS and they'll walk you through it. Or, do a repair install using the new key/media.

A friend installed his copy of XP on my machine many months ago. I already had my own license for XP at that point, but as a matter of convenience at the time, we installed his copy. Now as you know, MS won't supply automatic updates anymore, because they think I have a stolen copy of XP. Technically correct, but realistically, not quite that bad. How do I tell the operating system my correct license code? Will I need to reinstall the OS, or can it be done with less fuss?

Thanks.

I migrated from XP to Vista on a new computer. Vista has WMP 11 bundled. I am trying to update my DRM file to be able to play purchased music on my new computer.

I have followed MSN Support's suggestions regarding security settings in Internet Explorer and get to the final step - "Authorize new computer." When I click on the button nothing happens, but it has tried to process and gives me an error in the information bar that says there was a script error in line 3538 position 9.

Again, I have followed MSN's instructions to the letter. I reported back to them that instructions didn't work and they said they would "keep working on it" - yeah, right!

Please help.

Hi, and thank you for taking the time out of your day to help me with this problem. This problem has made me want to volunteer my own time to help others here (after the appropriate training) because of how much money it has cost me (in terms of time spent away from work) and because of the difficulty in tracing these issues when they become embedded. No one deserves to go through this, and I can imagine someone with a little less experience having even more of a nightmare (and I have no problem admitting how basic my knowledge really is.) Brief history, timeline is iffy, apologies: Desktop PC running Windows 7 Installation (64 bit) from previous owner. Has SSD w/ main install (and games), and another SATA HDD, partitioned w/ another Windows 7 Installation which I thought I had neutered, but perhaps not well enough, and a simple Media partition for anything I'd like to store (gameplay videos, code repos, schoolwork, etc.) My main account has administrator access which I realize is a no-no, so I do intend to fix that once I'm sure I can do so safely. Have had some random occurrences w/ PUPs and AdWare after a long history of no issues. Anticipated that it had something to do with an exploit and began updating anything I could imagine might be expressing a vulnerability. Current Symptoms: Windows does not acknowledge MWB as an AV software. I do have Windows Firewall enabled, and have for the duration of these issues, and for a period preceding it. ... Read more

Hi all,

I'm in need of some help.

My stepdads computer stopped applying Windows updates after getting the following error: "Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005."

I've followed various advice and I'm now in a situation where Windows thinks it's unlicensed! I can assure you the PC has been licensed and trouble free for the past three years or so until this happened. I know the computer was taken away to a specialist and they removed some software in my absence, my step dad isn't very computer literate so getting exact information and timings is impossible.

The PC is still working, but this is a blocker to resolving another issue, so I really hope you guys can sort me out.

I've run chkdsk and scandisk, no problems there.

Thanks in advance

Hi folks,
I am working with a company (that I have actually worked with for over 10 years on a consulting basis) and we are auditing our Microsoft Windows Server and server product licenses and preparing to upgrade Windows Server products.  We have ran into a snag, where the former System Administrator left the company a few years ago, however it was understood that the information regarding the VLSC was transferred to another partner in the company.  A new Systems Administrator has taken over, and we have determined that we do not have this information, including a Microsoft account username and password to access the VLSC and our Windows Server 2008R2 product keys, license agreements, SKUs, and downloads.  Unfortunately, the situation became took a turn for the worse about three months ago when the partner that had this information passed away.  No one at the company has access to this login information.  I currently administer most of their licensing, and have access to their much of their licensing information, download, product keys, etc., but I am clearly missing some very important ones.  I called Microsoft and they were of no assistance.  Since I am an administrator on the network, I can create a mailbox that the VLSC was probably originally registered under, however the VLSC says that Microsoft account is not even valid, not even prompting for the password.

Hello,

This machine is a very common model in my environment and I have done many fresh windows installations using the OEM license key without issue. however, on this particular machine, it reports it cannot activate because it cannot contact the KMS for activation.
Again, to clarify, this is the OEM product key that has been automatically pulled over from UEFI and NOT a MAK/KMS key.

I've run diagnostics as typically requested for this type of issue and can provide any additional information you might need. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi
I am running Win8.1 Home on my laptop.  I have access to a Win8.1 Pro (volume license) through my university.

My question is - how do I do the upgrade, keeping all my data and system settings intact?
(I have looked at the info online, and the closest I have come to an answer is 'you need media, this cannot be done through the online Store'.  I have an <Win8.1-Pro-x64 .ISO> disc, is this sufficient?)

Thanks for any pointers.

Hi,
This is a very quick and probably easy question.
I am offering regular KMS client servers, so the customer do not need to do any licensing as it will just happen out of the box.
BUT, we also want to offer a Bring Your Own license option, so the end customer can insert their own key.
So,I understand how to change the keys on our Windows Servers, and I wonder whether this builds will accept any OEM key as a replacement for the default KMS client one or not?

Many thanks.

Hello.

I'm new here, and I searched for some answers, but couldn't. I'm sorry if has been covered before (most likely it has), so please just kindly show me the way to some existing threads if this has been asked before.

I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium (upgrade) and installed it on my desktop PC. Before I bought it, I read about a Family Pack, but because my laptop was so old, I didn't think Windows 7 would work well on it. I even used the Upgrade Adviser, and it said it wouldn't. So, I bought a single license.

Before activating my desktop installation, I decided to install it on my laptop to see what would happen. To my surprise, it not only runs just fine...it runs twice as fast as the XP installation that was previously on there.

Needless to say, I want to install Windows 7 on my laptop now, but know I cannot install my purchased copy on two computers. Had I known it was going to work, I would have bought the Family Pack! But now, I suppose my only course of action is to buy another copy of Windows 7 at full price (for $120).

So...I guess my question is, am I right in my thinking? There's no way now to get a Family Pack by purchasing two more licenses at discount, is there? Can I just purchase another license without the software and use the same installation DVD twice? If so, where would I buy another license?

Thanks for all your help.

A recent thread on Sevenforums got me thinking. Why does Microsoft say in their license terms that you can't use an OEM license for personal use, but they sell it through third parties (Amazon and Newegg) and they know that ordinary people are going to buy these OEM copies. If Windows Activation goes through with it then it must be fine, right?
Also, I kind of mentioned this already, but why would they sell it through third parties if they CLEARLY know that any average personcould come across it and buy it. It doesn't say anywhere on Amazon's product description page that I have to sell it to a third party. Only in Microsoft's long EULA.

A:OEM License

The OEM Windows 7 sold through third parties is intended for builders who are building a PC for sale to another person. The EULA for OEM Windows 7 states pretty clearly that the OEM version is intended for the installed sale on a PC to another party, and not for personal use.

So legally/technically, even though it will activate, it's not fine; it's contrary to the EULA.

The license goes to windows 7 profession 64bit.

A:too much license

On the same machine, the license can be reinstalled infinite number of times. You may have trouble activating online if theres been a significant hardware change, in that case activate by phone.

If this is an OEM license, mobo change will make it illegal to use the license on the new mobo.

Hello. I have an XP computer that I'd like to put Windows 7 on, but it would have to be a 32-bit version. I would like to be able to scrap the computer and get a new one that would handle a 64-bit installation of Windows 7. I currently have a genuine copy of 64-bit for a different computer, which has its own license.

If I purchase a 32-bit version and use that until I need to destroy the old computer, and then install the 64-bit version on a new computer using the license code from the 32-bit copy, will that work? More importantly, is it legal?

Thanks,

A:32-Bit License v.s. 64-Bit License

You can use either 32-bit or 64-bit with any Win7 license, but only one at a time.

Changing the bit-version requires a booted clean reinstall. Clean Install Windows 7

If you bought Full Retail or Upgrade then they can migrate to any machine of your choice.

OEM is tied to the first mobo it's installed upon.

man0j21 Difficult to understand your issue, but if you're asking HP to send you a copy of Windows, HP does not do that. Nor do they make Windows available for download. For this issue, you need to contact HP Customer Support directly. If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!Good Luck

Q: license

The license cannot be downloaded because your Web browser is not supported.
To download a license, you must install Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or later. To install the latest version of Internet Explorer, see the
windows update page .    does this mean i cant get it with any other browser  ?, because plain and simple the problems i have had with internet explorer I will never
download that again, the same goes with WMP I try playing music and it tells me my library is corrupt so I cleared it and re-loaded it same problem. and so I now use foobar2000, VLC JRiver, and media monkey depending on what I am playing and what format and
have never had a problem with any of them

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Eee PC 1005HA. It originally came with Windows 7 but someone (sigh) erased it, and my License key number on the bottom is unreadable due to wear. I had a Toshiba Satellite A30 which sadly was dropped on the floor a few years ago and became unusable, but I preserve its License number, which is on the bottom. However, I know that it won't work with any Windows XP CD, so I wanted to know how I would go about to installing it. I don't have any installation disks from the Toshiba, just two product recoveries (parts 1 & 2) and a Tools and Utilities one.

Thank you very much in advance
Gaston

A:How to get a CD for my License Key

OK. I think I understand what's going on here.
99.9% of brand name computers come with OEM versions of Windows installed. That means that the license is forever tied to the computer it's installed on. Sure you could borrow any XP CD that's the same version (Home, Pro) to install the Windows software, then attempt to use your Toshiba's XP product key on your 1005HA, but authorization would fail and in 30 days the computer would fail to boot.

My Company bought new computers a few months ago with XP home on them. We recently had need to upgrade them to XP Pro. My question is, Since they're not being used can we still use the XP home license on another machine even though it was already registered with Microsoft?

A:XP License

If you used XP-Pro upgrade packages, the answer is no.

My Vista came preinstalled. I've read every page on using the upgrade to do a clean install. I not only have to do some kind of install, I have to put in a new hard drive. Mine is on it's way out. I bought a WD 1TB black, to put it on. The system files are corrupt beyond repair. Believe me I've tried doing 3 in-place repairs with some CD's I borrowed from a friend. Now I'm told the reason the repair fails is because it wasn't done with the OEM version CD. I keep getting told I can't do a clean install of anything on a new hard drive because the OEM on the motherboard won't recognize the new license to activate it, that is unless I buy the full retail version. If I do the upgrade, what license do I use to register with?? And what about this crap about the motherboard???

I'm so confused my head is spinning. I no longer have the Acer eRecovery CD to roll it back to the factory settings. I did get the PQServices and the Data Partitions backed up to the hard drive but as files not an image backup.
I have used both Macrium Reflect and Acronis True Image for WD to try to back up the full HD to image but I can't get one that will verify. I don't know how to get into the hidden partition to retrieve the original version connected to the license.

All I want is a system that isn't going to croak on me. I really don't care if it's Vista or W7. Vista would obviously be cheaper since I have both stand alone versions of the service packs. But I need to get into the recovery partition to... Read more

A:What happens to the OEM license?

Your MBR may have been messed up with a reinstall or the repairs you've attempted. If you know you still have the Recovery partition but it won't boot by pressing Alt + F10 at bootup, then try this:

Quote:
Reboot your computer and hold down F8, from the menu that follows choose:

Repair your computer (if this is not a choice, use Vista Repair CD)
Select keyboard layout, click Next then enter your user details
Click Command prompt
here you should be presented with 'X:\Windows\System32
type 'cd\' <Enter> without quotes
then at X:\ type 'mbrwrwin boot hdo:x' <Enter> without quotes
this sets the MBR to boot off the X: partition (ie. 'hidden partition')
now type 'Exit'

click on Restart and as soon as the Acer splash screen comes hold down the magic combination <Alt><F10>
and from there you can proceed to start D2D recovery

If this fails, find any Vista retail installer to reinstall your version with the Product Key on COA sticker.

You do not need an OEM installer to reinstall factory OEM since XP. A retail installer will work. You cannot transfer an OEM license from the machine it first was installed upon.

If you want to buy Win7, you qualify for Upgrade Version. I'm assuming you're interested since you posted in a Win7 forum.

Did you attempt to repair your HD using maker's diagnostic/Repair CD scan, followed by Disk Check run from the Repair CD Command Line?

Your licence comes with the CD for home users i think it's only in business where you can buy extra licences so you would have to buy another version of XP to get a license for your new Comp. i beleive that is how it is i'm not 100% sure.

I am almost finished building my new gaming rig. I need to get a copy of XP Pro. I currently have an OEM version of XP Pro on my one machine. I know I won't be able to install it on my new machince since I have already used the activation code.

What is the least expensive way for me to LEGALLY put a new copy of XP on my new box?

Can I simply buy an activation code? Do I NEED a COA? (Is the Lisence and the COA the same thing?)

I'm been searching the internet and there are SOOOO many choices besides the basic OEM and RETAIL. I really don't need another CD do I?

Here's one link I found. Is this all I need? If so, anyone find it cheaper?

IS this link LEGIT? XP Pro AND OFfice for $80.00?

http://www.qualityoemsoft.biz/

A:XP Pro... (OEM, License, COA, CD vs no CD)...

Is the other computer still using that cd-key of windows? It is completely legal to change the computer. I've done it multiple times. You will have to call up microsoft and tell them what you're doing, but they will let you do it.

You can disable injections to secure connections. I disable it, and in fact, most AVs do this, and it is indeed problematic.
