Can't login at login screen windows 7

Q: Can't login at login screen windows 7

For the past 3 days I haven't been able to log in to my 7 year old compaq laptop after trying to restore/recover my iTunes which completely lost all its contents last Sunday. Recovery failed but windows did an update (which it hasn't done for ages). I have never experienced problems with this laptop. The keys and mousr are unresponsive on the windows login page but fine otherwise (I tried some tune up & problem solving using the F function keys). I really don't want to restore to factory settings box fresh that would be disastrous! Please help me

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This has never happened before. When I turn on the computer, the two accounts show up (both administrator) but whenever I click either of them, the screen just shows the Windows 7 login screen for a while without any text then sends me back to the account selection. This happens when I select either of the accounts, one of them also has a password but that doesn't show up either.

PLEASE HELP.
(also don't know a lot about computers ;-; )

EDIT : When I turned on the computer, it went through updates where it says Starting Windows with the Windows logo. Maybe this helps.

A:Can't login to Windows 7. Sends me back to login screen every time.

Same thing happened to me since the update yesterday.

( just to clarify Is this the same problem ? I posted a video Windows Error - YouTube )

Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I go looking around for password changing boots for my flashdrive. I burned PASSCAPE on to my 16gig 2-1 flashdrive. Tried booting on all settings, booted normally, didn't work. So, I ignored it for a while and kept clicking "Reset password" button, It showed up as "Passcape" but claimed the usb slot was empy, wasn't; the slot is "F". I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

I was simply following the video's instructions, so at step one at duration "2:02" I have to cause a error, I just keep shutting-down the pc while it's booting, because windows will assume it's an error after 2 - 3 times of doing so. Okay, by the time I get to "Repair your computer" button I press enter. And the shocking surprise I get which is odd is this in quotes:

She never told me exactly what was the problem everyone, all she said is "Did you change the password" (waking me up at 8AM) then "The password is changed and I can't get on!" What is this problem we are experiencing-i've never seen this before.

hi guys,

i've got a very strange problem with the kids laptop which i'm desperate to sort out as my kid has her exams coming up and needs access to her apps.

Windows loads okay, upto the point when i get to the welcome screen.

Sometimes it gets to the welcome screen, but the user profile icons will never show but then sometimes the icons will show, but when i click on the icon, i can't get to the bit where i can type a password.

If i reboot into safemode, then i can perfectly access everything as normal.

Any ideas guys?

Hello Smash, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm a bit confused with your conflicting statements.

You say that "...now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away.", but then ask "How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop..."?

Just to be certain, do you have to log on or not?Log On Automatically at Startup
Are you asking how to log on to the built-in Administrator account to have full access and control?

Welcome CJGCJG to the windows 7 forums.

Remote Desktop Program is as it says a program on your computer that will allow you full screen remote to another system that authorizes you. There is a way to automatically bring the RDP program up for you to log into another system but it requires that your primary windows system (the one your want to connect from) be set up to automatically boot into you Operating system, putting the RDP program in your startup fold will bring it up.
Using netplwiz, you can set your userid to automatically log in to your local machine and then the RDP would run and you can then log onto your remote system. In fact y ou can save all the credentials for your RDP session and it will automatically login to your remote system.

Is this clear?

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

Ok, here's the background. My wife's pc (identical to my own, and running on Windows XP)was restarting at shutdown recently on it's own and I saw an error that said there was some kind of driver error. So, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers in hopes of installing the most recent ones. I don't know if this was the issue, but I was troubleshooting and I noticed that there was a recent driver update.

Well now I can't log on at all, because when I get to the windows login screen, the mouse and keyboard won't work. I see for an instance the cursor shows an hourglass, then nothing. I see the blinking cursor in the login field, but I can't type anything in there, and the mouse doesn't work.

So, I tried to do a system restore but it just sent me to the login screen, and no mouse or keyboard function persisted. When I tried to go into safe mode, it asked me what was the boot device I wanted to use (which after some searching I see is also an indicator of a problem, but I'm not sure what it means). I picked my HD and continued to do a restore to the last working config, and the same deal, can't login, no mouse or keyboard use at that sceen.

So, I tried going into safe and it shows both an administrator icon and my wife's user name, and I can't try either because again, the moust and keyboard aren't working here either!

I tried to boot with the windows xp disc in, even picked the boot source from the boot menu as floppy and again as the cd-rom. I read that doing so can sometim... Read more

Hi, I just discovered a problem with vista. I recently installed an outstanding software known as TuneUp Utilities 2009, I then used it to customize my computer login screen, I made a modification such that on startup or when no one is logged (i.e. when the login screen is displayed), in case there has been no activity for 10 minutes, vista's built in bubble screensaver begins to run. Unfortunately, when I tested this modification out, I noticed a screensaver error stating that "direct3d 9.0 is required to run this screensaver and can't be found on your computer", so I logged in and tried running the screensaver again and it worked perfectly.
Why is it not working on the login screen but it works on the desktop screen? How do I confirm the version of direct x I have installed, because I recently made an update on my direct x, I tried updating it to 10.XXX and the same problem is still occurring. Please reply asap.

Hello nice people !

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (?), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

If anyone has an idea, that would be greatly approciated.

A:Changing the local user login name on the login screen

I have a problem with an old aspire 5920. I've upgraded it correctly to the latest build of Win10 32bit. I was already on a clean Win10 installation. Now I cannot logon anymore because the logon screen is just empty. If I press enter the clock/screensaver disappear but the user name doesn't come out. To enter safe mode I have to force shut down the laptop 3 times then win10 start its "repair useless thing" and I can decide to enter safe mode. In safe mode the login works correctly. I noticed I cannot add other users. Safe mode limitation? If I click on add another user it just flash a new window and that's all. I cannot enter safe mode from the locked logon page with Shift + Reboot it just reboot normally so I have to force it to turn off. The problem started from 1 day to another. Not soon after the uograde but some days later. I didn'install any AV or any new drivers (at least that I know of). I'm doubting that some auto update did the problem. I've already tried to boot it with wifi off even removing the wifi card from the laptop... Is there a way to solve this without repair win10 installation and losing programs....?

Hi, my windows was set up like this:
C: windows 7
F: all user accounts inluding default user ( users folder ) are on F drive.
I imaged windows, and restored it on a different PC.
On another HDD, I assigned it as F: and put a copy of the user folders on there.

But now when it goes to log in, a profile unable to login service error comes up...!!

Is it have to do with the F drive?

Is there something other than just the Drive letter, that windows looks for when searching for the users folder to login? Like HDD id/serials or something like that?

How can I fix this, it driving me crazy for too long!!
Thanks!!!!

A:!! Restored image of windows, now wont login, login service error!!

OK, its definitely because windows cant assign the HDD as F: because it hasn't recognized it before.

So, then, is there any way to add the HDD ID and assigned letter, to the windows registry BEFORE restoring the image ( ie before imaging)??

This is quite a confusing story, and the cause for it simply eludes me, but this will be the second time it has happened.

Basically, I was on Youtube through Google Chrome. Shockwave Flash crashed on me (and it is well known that Flash will often crash on Chrome), and when Chrome said I should end the process, I did. To attempt to restart Flash, I exited Chrome and clicked on it again to reopen it. It failed to come up. And so begins my real problem.

I try to open Task Manager through CTRL + Shift + ESC; fails to come up. I try CTRL + ALT + DEL as well; fails to come up. The computer begins to lag like crazy. I can't click on anything without having to wait for at least 5 minutes. I did try patience though, and the menus eventually came up, but still, movement was futile. My plan was to go in and hopefully find the process that was potentially lagging my pc. The strangest thing was that the CPU Usage was fine and barely went above 10-11%, and the Physical Memory was at 21%. So what could be affecting it and making it so slow if the processes are fine?

I then decided to restart my computer. It loaded the windows loading screen fine, but that first time the windows login screen took nearly 10 minutes to come up. When it finally did, I tried to login, it would take me to a black screen with just the mouse pointer in the dead center and nothing else within sight. The mouse was moveable, but there was nothing to click on.

I've tried a variety of solutions, from going into BIOS... Read more

Hello all.
We have Windows Server2003 on servers, windows xp on clients, protected by a watchguard firebox x550. VPN users authenticate to Firebox, not AD.
I am trying to setup pptp-vpn on a new laptop, which has Windows 7 Pro. Here is what happens.
I go outside the office, login to Windows laptop with the domain username and password. Then I fire up PPTP-VPN, login with the vpn username/password (leaving domain blank).

VPN Login goes through fine, I can see and ping servers by name and by IP. However, when I try to browse to the network drives, it says username not found.

I tried logging in with a different VPN/username, still the same thing. Not only that, but since that vpn/username matched a username on the domain, it actually locked that domain (not VPN) username out after a few clicks (group policy for domain users is set
to 3 times the wrong password locks the account).
So somehow, when I connect via PPTP-VPN on a Windows 7
laptop, the PPTP login overwrites the windows login. PPTP connection is setup with domain blank, and the box "Use windows domain/login" unchecked.

The same PPTP-VPN, on a Windows XP laptop works fine, does not have that issue.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Friend of family had a stroke, can't remember user password. It happens. I'm an old ex network admin, so pretty savy here yet Totally stumped, short of spending money to buy something. Here is what I've tried to do to get to the command prompt, so I can run net user to enable the administrator login, which is defaulted as disabled on 7. Of course she never made up any backup image disks or anything, duh.......who does?

1. On boot up, pressed F8 to get to command prompt with safe mode. That works, when selected option given here, still boots up to the user name login. So I can't get to the command prompt. Tried the other safe mode options, with same result. Toshiba also has a F12 boot option, same result.

2. Started windows, when it was loading, I shut it down with Power On button, restarted, repair mode to get to command prompt, cancelling the repair when it starts, but can't get to command prompt this way either.

3. Tried my Windows 7 disk, but still loads and comes up to user login, so I can't enable the administrator option.

4. I think she has this locked down pretty good, nothing in the BIOS to secure the user access.

I have a bootable Flash drive, but it will not work on this Toshiba Satelite laptop, will not boot as there is no option in BIOS to enable it. I tried with a bootable CD disk, and it boots up, but I still go to the user login like above.

Would like to help her out, I doubt she'll be working again, and is only in her late 50's. Doing t... Read more

Hello everyone

I've navigated almost the whole internet to find a solution to this problem, but I found none

The PC starts up fine like usual untill the windows 7 login screen, once in there, there is no login box. The image of my User session is missing, aswell as the line where im supposed to type in my password, Its just the plain blueish windows 7 screen.
-
Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting - thats a picture of how it looks like. (It is not mine though)

Also note, the screen flickers every a couple seconds and the mouse pointer works fine

I have tried turning off the PC for a while and trying again later, i also tried restarting it several times and safe mode aswell but they all lead to the same problem. I also dont have a repair disk

I am quite desperate to use my PC again, its been like that for almost a week now and the tech guy isnt coming untill wednesday. I would really like to know if its an error i can fix myself maybe through the bios or something or if its well beyond that and I might need a windows or maybe even hardware replacement.

Thanks all!

I finally was able to go into Regedit and delete a bunch of things and now finally I am able to get to the login user screen but my original login doesn't appear. Firefox keeps asking me for the proxy username and password - on every page, often multiple times.

Firefox, on this machine, asks me for a username and password for every single page. Just once for a very simple page with no graphics or Javascript, and several times if there are multiple items on the page: I have to login 5 times before it will show Google. This is really annoying - as you can imagine.
Any ideas what I can do to stop Firefox asking for a proxy login every time it tries to download a page??

Quite a little conundrum for me anyway....

Firefox keeps asking me for the proxy username and password - on every page, often multiple times.

I've just installed firefox on a WinXP laptop and plugged it into a university LAN. The set up is all pretty default, you know: 8080, exceptions for local addresses and so on. The connection seems fine, and IE (finally) seems to be okay, even downloading from Windows Update, which was a real pain to get to work, but that's another story.

When I start up a browser, I have to give a username and password for the proxy: same when I download something or run an Active X control. This isn't too bad. But on Firefox, on this machine, asks me for a username and password for every single page. Just once for a very simple page with no graphics or Javascript, and several times if there are multiple items on the page: I have to login 5 times before it will show Google. This is really annoying - as you can imagine.

Also, the Add-ons and the extensions for firefox won't down load, but set off a dialog saying that it can't install because of download error -228. According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_...oad_Error_-228 this may be due to a firewall or spybot incompatibility. I've got Trend Micro Office Scan client on the machine, and this works with a server on the university's server, as I understand it , if that makes any sense - I downloaded it from the IT department's antivirus page.

The Trend OfficeScan client's firewall is disabled, but I've got just a standard wind... Read more

Hi-I just tried to load a HP office ject 4215 all-in-one printer on my computer using the typical install which included all kinds of features. I don't have enough space so I removed it using the uninstall feature on the cd. It did not remove everything so I used Windows explorer to find what I could. Then, I reinstalled it using the minimum requirements. It is working fine but everytime my screen saver comes on, when I move the mouse I am at a windows login screen that shows the users (only one which is me) on the right and I have to click this to get back to my desktop. I have Windows XP Professional. This is really annoying how do I get rid of it?
Thank you so much.

I have been using Windows 8 since the first beta's released, and have had a pretty good amount of problems. But this one, this one just completely stupefies me. I was using it as normal, rebooted, and suddenly, after the OS select screen, nothing. A black screen in place of the login screen. I grumbled, and booted to my other Windows 8.1 install off my (currently broken) laptop's HDD. i searched to see what to do, and the only things I could find were where you could see the mouse, which I couldn't. I tried booting to safe mode, to no avail. Same thing. Black screen, no mouse. I couldnt restore/refresh, because I dont have an install disc (I upgraded from 8 with a disc, which broke). I got the tool that's suppossed to give you an ISO of it, and it said I was offline (which I confirmed wasnt true). I'm at a loss. Also, it isnt the HDD itself, as I can access it, and installed ubuntu on it, and it showed its S.M.A.R.T. data was perfect. HELP ME! I NEED IT ASAP!

A:Windows 8.1 No Login Screen

Most likely when you pulled the image from the broken hard drive. Some data got scrambled. Have you tried doing a Repair install? Also have you tried using DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8 to fix the problem.

If you have already installed Ubuntu on the drive. It has wiped out any information that was previously on the hard drive.

Hi, I searched everywhere and I couldn't seem to find any more than one other person with the same problem.

On my PC running vista, upon login there is a list of users displayed. On this laptop (running Windows 7) I can't get it to start any way other than displaying a blank picture frame for the user display picture, and individual username and password fields. There are only two user accounts, one for me and one for my girlfriend, so that login system really isn't necessary.

How can I get the welcome screen to display both our user pictures? Every picture of a Windows 7 welcome screen that I have seen displays in this way.

Thankyou in advance for your help, sorry if I'm just missing something extremely obvious. I have already tried going into netplwiz, I can't see any settings to remedy the problem. Cheers!

A:Windows 7 Login Screen

If you can't login with any picture assigned to any user then something has corrupted the login process files.

Once you login,, try going to command prompt
Click start and in the search type cmd and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to get an admin command prompt

type sfc /scannow and hit enter to see if this helps fix anything first.

I used to be able to turn on my Windows XP SP2 machine and be on the desktop without having to be there to pick a login name. I installed a new printer on this machine and now it stops and waits for me to pick a login name. It was also going to the login screen whenever the screensaver was accessed. I was able to remove that feature by right-clicking on the desktop > properties > screensaver and unchecking "on resume, display Welcome screen".

I remember when this happened on my old Win 98 computer I went into the control panel > network and changed the setting from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to "Windows Logon". Is there a way to do this in Windows XP SP2? I have not been able to find it.

Thanks for your help.

I was infected with a virus last night which turned my background green saying my computer was infected. I did a total system scan with Norton and when I rebooted my machine, it would boot to the welcome screen "never did this before" and when I tried to login, it would say "loading personal settings" then show my desktop for a brief second, then log me out again to the welcome screen. I tried to start in safe mode, but I got a blue screen saying there was a virus. How can I get into the computer to fix the problem? The never ending welcome screen loop is not letting me proceed. Thanks

Here's what you should try:1. Download the Kaspersky Live CDKaspersky Live CD 2008It's an ISO file that you can need to open using a CD Burning software and burn onto a CD.2. Now, as soon as you turn on your PC, enter the BIOS setup and change the BOOT SEQUENCE to and make your CD drive the primary boot device (This makes sure the system reads from your drive before switching to your hard disk).3. Now insert the live CD into the drive and restart your PC.4. It should now run the Kaspersky anti-virus application off the disc. Simply use it to scan for viruses and delete them.Once the cleaning process is over, head back to the BIOS setup and change the BOOT SEQUENCE to make the hard disk primary.Restart your PC and you should be able to login to Windows !

Sorry if this is the wrong place

I just recently installed Windows 7 Professional on a new hard drive and when I turn on the computer to login, it doesn't choose my account by default. Usually if you have a password protected account, all you have to do is type your password after starting up, but in my case I need to click my small account icon before I can type my password. I don't have any other users on this computer so it should jump to my account by default.

To clarify I want to still be able to just type my password but just without clicking my icon.

Although this is a small problem, it still kind of bugs me. Is there anyone out there who knows how to fix this?

Good evening to all.
Been using windows ten now for a while,And quite happy with it.
Now the only slight issue that I have is when the laptop needs to restart when it comes to the Welcome screen my name is there and underneath the name it states The user name or password is incorrect.Try Again.

Now on the bottom left of the welcome screen there are two boxes with one with my name [email protected]*****@outlook.com
and under that its just my name david Williams.
Now to pass the welcome screen I have to select the david*****@outlook.com then enter my password,That part is no problem.
But why is my name showing as well as the outlook one.How can I delete the david Williams one and just have the david****@outlook.com showing.
Any help here Please.
Thanks.

Hello dafydd,

This usually happens when the password has been entered incorrectly in netplwiz to have Windows automatically sign in to the account at startup. Setting up netplwiz again to update or correct the password should sort this for you.
