I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Windows 10 Pro - Version 10.0.14393 Build 14393

I somehow lost my Administrator privilege and now can't run numerous programs because I forgot my Administrator password.

On the login screen both my Account and the Administrator Account is displayed. When I click on Administrator, the Administrator login screen appears and the tiny circle goes round and round for approx. 2 minutes and then a black screen appears. After about 20 minutes the screen was still black so I gave up. I had to switch users (to my account) by clicking "Switch User" via Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I've made sure the Administrator account is enabled as per instructions that I had received - i.e. checking that a registry key value is "10" not "11". See attached.

I am currently using my Microsoft Account for sign-in. I doubt this makes any difference.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can't.

But you can run a utility to recover it, if you install the drive in another machine.

Also, you can slave the drive in your own machine, install a new master
drive, reinstall Windows, log on as administrator, then copy the files over.

I've had to do that many times.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
I have forgotten my Administrator password. I have tried a couple of the free password crackers, but no luck. Also tried the command net user, with no luck; I get the "Access Denied" message whenever I try this. I've looked at a lot of the threads here, but they all seem to be just a little bit different.
All I have access to is this other user profile, and I can't install anything on it without the Admin password.
I have the Windows DVD, and have tried a boot repair, but it tells me that the OS is booting correctly (which it is).
Where to from here ? It's wasted a helluva lot of time, and I just seem to be going round in circles.
How can I give this profile I am using Admin rights ? Don't seem to be able to do anything without the Admin password.
Thanks for any advice offered.

Hello everyone. I can not seem to figure this out on my own and was wonderring if anyone here can help..

Anyways, heres my problem; My girlfreind has a computer, which was given to her a few years ago. It has been set up so that she is the administrator. In order to do anything, such as install programs and games and such, one must be logged in on her account, becuase she is the administrator. It has been set up so that all functions of the computer have to be done when she is logged in. Heres the problem...... We have forgotten her password!!

I have tried using the password recovery programs but cannot do so becuase the computer wont let those programs access anything becuase we are not logged in on her administrative account!

We are running microsoft windows XP home edition version 2002.

Anyways I thought that a solution might be to reformat the computer, which is fine becuase I was gonig to do that anyways but when I access the MS dos command promt and type in FORMAT C, it says "invalid drive specification"!!! What do you mean "invalid drive specification"!!! Its installed in C!!!

Anways I am running out of ideas here and would be most grateful if someone could help me. Even if we cant recover the lost password if someone could help me to reformat the computer that would be great.

Thanks a lot,

Glacius

I did not set up an Administrator Password on a relative's HP laptop but now it is asking for one before we can do anything. She recently wanted to download Adobe Reader and it asks for Admin password. I have tried to fix the problem, but it asks for the password for everything. Also I noticed that her security checker is off and it won't let me turn it on. I can not download, upload, make any changes etc. I have read everything online and tried the "cmd" prompts some have suggested, etc. It says the administrator is "active:no". What else can I do? I'm afraid it has a virus to prevent me from doing anything, but can't even check that. Help! She can't afford a repairman.

My friends daughter has an acer aspire v5 571 running windows 8 with phoenix bios running uefi boot. She has changed, then forgotten administrator password. Normally i would boot from a password reset disk and blank the password works fine with win 7 but with the UEFI it wont boot from anything other than windows boot manager. I have changed the boot order in bios to put usb or cd rom first and i have tried both a cd and a usb stick to boot from but as long as UEFI is enabled it wont boot from them. If I select Legacy instead, it will boot from either and boot into the linux enviroment and run up to the point where it is looking for a windows partition to load a file from to blank the password, it sees the 500Mb disk but doesnt recognise it as a windows partition. I also tried Alt plus F10 to enter the restore partition to replace win 8 with a fresh version but both with UEFI or Legacy modes it doesnt boot to this nothing happens. Lastly I tried logging onto microsoft account from another PC and managed to reset password via email but now it says to make sure laptop is online when it boots but it doesnt have an ethernet port so have now run out of ideas. Any help appreciated !

A:Lost Administrator Password

Update -
Used Hirens boot CD
Switched bios to Legacy Mode
Booted from Hirens then used Ntfile utility to go into windows/system32 and renamed Utilman.exe to utilman.old
Copied cmd.exe then renamed cmd.exe to Utilman.exe
Then rebooted switched Bios back to UEFI and rebooted again.
Now at windows login i clicked logo at bottom left which brought up Cmd window.
Use net user command to try and replace password for only user listed but it failed to do this, it said it didnt have privelages maybe because it wasnt a local account but a microsoft one.
Used net user to create a new user with a known password made this user active.
Then rebooted logged on as new user and went into users to remove the lost password from existing account. This didnt work as there was no option to do this I guess because its not a local account. I then logged onto my wireless connection and let it do updates and am about to try the old user account with the new password I created on Microsoft live and hopefully job done. Except for swapping Utilman and cmd back.

Dell Latitude Laptop - XP Pro SP3

I have two profiles (well three if you count GUEST) that show up in Windows Explorer folder "Documents and Settings"

STEVE - which is the one I use every day, and has "administrator" rights. I know the password for this one. I can do all functions as an Administrator and life is good.

ADMINISTRATOR - I never have used this, but today, just for grins, tried to log on with it. I don't have the password. My STEVE password doesn't work, leaving it blank doesn't work and a bunch of other passwords I have used don't work.

I logged back in as Steve and went to Control Panel>User Accounts thinking I could reset the Administrator password there, but it ( ADMINISTRATOR) does not appear in the User Account window. Just STEVE and GUEST appear in the User Accounts window.

Is there a way I can access the Administrator profile?

Please note: This is not a big deal. I have full rights and can do everything I need to do as STEVE, but it bugs me that I can't get into ADMINISTRATOR as STEVE, even though STEVE is an administrator.

Installed Windows 8 on my desktop. Bought another licence (download) for my wife's laptop. Everything went fine until I used netplwiz to change her to the administrator and only user. I thought that went ok but now she is the only user and I'm being prompted for a password everywhere which doesn't work. I can't even run a third party application from a thumb drive. I wouldn't mind reinstalling Windows 8 if that's the fix but I couldn't find the executable after it downloaded and installed. I probably wouldn't be able to execute it anyway without admin privileges. Tried to buy yet a third copy of Windows 8 to reinstall on the laptop and I couldn't even do that without admin privileges.

Anyone have any suggestions to recover or reset the admin password or how to reinstall Windows 8?

I have an old, dual-core computer that apparently only has an networked administrator account, called SERVER68\itxadmin, for which I do not have a password.  (A local non-profit gave the computer to see if I could do something with it.)  I have
tried several ways described on the internet to reset the password, but have not been successful.

At the Windows 7 user login, if I attempt to logon to SERVER68\itxadmin, it says I have the wrong password.  If I try any other user, it says that there are no logon services to service the logon request. With a Hiren's boot disk, I can see, clear the password, and enable the ADMIN user, but none of that seems to affect the logon results.I tried the command line "net user SERVER68/itxadmin *", the shell says that I have a syntax error.  If I try anything else for the username, it says that it can't find that user.  If I add a user with "net user /ADD", I get
the same results at the windows logon as with any other user--no logon services available.
So....it seems like I need to configure the computer/edit the registry, so that it knows it does not need to go to a server to get authentication.  Or to put it another way, how do I get it to allow local users to authenticate and logon?  I am
not really sure if I am asking the right questions.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

John

I bought a new Dell pc with windows 8.1 about a year ago and immediately set it up to log on without a password. Problem is that I have now forgotten the password. This is not an immediate problem because it logs on without the password. The problem is, if I log off accidently at any time, I will be stuck.

I have gone to "change password" where I am requested to enter the old password. It fails and I had hoped to be given a password "hint", but no.  I think I would need to log off to get to the password hint, but I am not presently brave enough to log off. Can I somehow retrieve the hint without logging off?
I am hoping that it may be possible to retrieve my password from my "logged on" environment?
I have searched for answers but cannot find anything that relates to finding passwords while logged on.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Hi,
well since you have already tried to guess your password by changing it while logged in you are kind of stuck but not really.

I have an answer that will work but just glancing at the forum rules it might not be allowed. I'm not sure though.

what I was going to post is in an article at pcworld. Search for  "Locked out? Get back into Windows 8 by resetting your password." Your not really locked out but might be at some point and this is the only way I know of that will let you reset your password when you don't know the original.

I've done it a few times. It works.

A:I lost the password to the administrator's account and can o...

Hi, If you normally access the Admin account with an email and password, see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.  https://account.live.com/password/reset Otherwise, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all your personal data etc is backed-up, would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have your Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#!&AbT1%3Fjumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1 Regards, DP-K

Okay, the long story here is that I changed my password to a random string of numbers and letters. The problem began when I neglected to write down the password before my laptop went idle. I don't have a password recovery disk or my original XP CD.

I do have another CD, though, so I'm not concerned with just reinstalling Windows if I have to. I just need assurance that I can salvage all of my files (this is the laptop I use for school).

So it's a sticky predicament, and any help would be appreciated.

A:Lost New Administrator Password, Having Difficulties Recovering (SP3)

Hello Hanjin

I`m afraid we cannot help with password cracking.

All you can do is boot into the Main Administrator Account.
Then go to User Accounts and reset the password

How to access the Main Administrator Account
If you are at the Welcome screen and want to log on with the Administrator account, but it?s not listed, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice( Hold CTRL+ALT and press DEL twice) to bring up the Windows 2000 logon window, which then allows you to log on as Administrator.
For XP Home you have to do this in Safe Mode

If that does not work for you you will have to slave your laptop drive in another machine

How do i remove or change my windows vista administrator password without a set up disk or recovery disk when the only user showing is administrator? Thanks

A:lost administrator password and no set up or recovery disk

What type of computer do you have? Was Windows Vista pre-installed by the manufacturer, for example like a Dell, HP, Gateway computer?

Or, was it a generic, home or custom-built computer?

Since Windows XP, the next O/S's don't allow you to boot to Safe Mode and log on that way, to remove passwords.

You were advised by the software to create a Password Reset disc.....many people do not do that, though.

About the only safe, or legal way around this is to reinstall. You can use a borrowed disc, provided you match the License your computer has, to the disc you install from.

A Full System Recovery will also work but I am not sure a Repair Install would.....perhaps.

Keep in mind that you will most likely lose the hidden partition recovery, if you choose to do a full manual reinstall, using the regular Microsoft Windows Vista DVD that matches your License. It will require a format of the drive and you will lose your own files, so you can connect the drive to a working computer to rescue them before you wipe it out.

Have a Dell 17R7720 that has a administrator password  that gives a series of numbers as a password hint. Don't know what the password is, any help here would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Administrator password lost Dell 17R7720

You will need to call (by voice) Dell with that code and verify your ownership of the system.  They'll then generate an unlock code for the system.

Well I changed my password on a whim, changed my hint to "no hints". No I did not create a password reset disk. Moving on... I have tried loginrecovery.comthe Offline NT thingand the software on password-reset.com There seems to be a common problem. On Peter Nordahl's thing (offline NT) it says "sam registry not loaded". Login recovery software says can't read hive file. The password-reset.com software just displays nothing. And the icing on the cake is I can't find/lost my vista disk and everything else that came with my computer. Its a dell inspiron 531.

A:I forgot my administrator password. And I lost my Vista disk.

You can request a Vista disc from Dell, then boot to it and choose Repair, then system restore and that will roll back the password.

A:HP 2000 laptop with Windows 8 - Lost Administrator password

Hello @Roscoe66 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. Officially, your password can only be recovered if you use Microsoft account to login to the system , not a local account. Here is more information > https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/I-forgot-my-password-can-HP-hel... If nothing helps, you will need to reimage your PC (reinstall Windows/perform HP Recovery). Let me know if you need assistance re. this approach. There might be some other ways to get the issue fixed. You can search for them on your own but these are not official and might be illegal under certain curcumstances.

You need to place a voice call to Dell support --- they'll provide you an unlock key upon validation of ownership.
