Hyper-V Hypervisor not running - can't remove Hyper-V feature

Q: Hyper-V Hypervisor not running - can't remove Hyper-V feature

I am using Windows 10 Insider Preview 11082 (upgraded from Windows 1151 fully updated.

I had installed the Hyper-V feature in the latest Windows 1151 but had not used it before I received and installer the Insider Preview edition.

The Hyper-V Manager was configured OK but when I tried to start a VM I created (in this case Windows Server 2016 TP4 since I want to explore the new nested Hyper-V feature) I got the message that the Hyperrvisor was not running. Indeed when I created the services admin tool the HV was not running although it was set to staRt automatic. I could not start it - failed immediately. Most annoying I could not remove the Hyper-V feature. Windows started the removal process after rebooting but then rolled the changes back because it could not apply them. I restored Windows 10 from a recent image I created using AOEMI Backupper. The restore worked flawlessly and instead of trying to remove Hyper-V I've disabled all its processes. Now I can install VMware Workstation and Virtualbox but I really wanted to try Hyper-V

Has anybody got Hyper-V working on Windows 10?- what version if so. Is there a workaround for the Insider Preview or if not how I can I file a bug?

TIA
V

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey community. I was hoping for some clarification. I am use to working with VMWare ESXi VSphere for hypervisors. So I have been labbing for my MCSA and I notice alot of the context of MCSA material describes installing an instance of Windows Server 2016,
and then turning that into a Hyper-V Server. What I did was I installed Hyper-V Server 2016 on my ProLiant. Is there any reason why I would not want to do this ? I had to reference alot of white papers, manuals, eventually blogs, and I think a youtube video
or two before I could manage it from my remote PC. It involved adding the target computer via power shell, customizing the hosts file, adding the server within the PC's computer configuration I forget what exactly. I also had to disable the firewall on the
Hyper-V Server 2016 before the Hyper-V Server 2016 hosted on the ProLiant started appearing in my Hyper-V Manager from my Windows 10 Pro machine.

However I was listening to this gentleman's youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdJJ4jiYx0Q
and he explains that Hyper-V Server is meant to be installed as a bare metal Hypervisor which is what I did do but because i was accustomed to working with VMWare SAN's that are the same way where you install the Hypervisor on the host machine and start
spinning up virtual machines. However I noticed i got some updates on the Hyper-V-Server 2016 the other day and not all of them wanted to install ... I believe some of the updates were for Windows so it went int... Read more

Hello, I have installed hyper-v on a lenovo thinkpad t470 (and tested this problem on 3 other t470 thinkpads). The thinkpad has: a) an Intel RJ45 adapter b) a Sierra wireless adapter EM7455 c) an Intel wireless 8265 adapter Hyper-v does work correctly as long as there is an RJ45 Ethernet cable connection plugged in (and connectivity). When you remove the RJ45 connectivity it instantly disables the wireless adapter (intel 8265), whatever you try the wireless adapter remains unusable. As a test, I also upgraded the intel 8265 adapter to an intel 9260 adapter ... but the problem remains. I have to say that they both use the same intel driver. If you try to enable the device in the computer management console, it is instantly disables it again after a few seconds. This seems to be specifically related to the lenovo t470 laptop as we don't have that kind of problems on other laptops. I also tried to enable/disable some BIOS options etc ... Has anyone experienced similar issues or has any ideas how to solve the problem? I would really appreciate some help as I have absolutely no ideas ... what else to try. Here was my original post in the Microsoft forums ... but that didn't help either: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/azure/en-US/939f4a3b-9d3e-4f10-8384-189d952a4b5e/hyperv-... Hello Everyone,
Thank you for checking the query, this is with regards to a setup for ATA 1.8, where most of the DCs are Virtual and around 20 Hyper-V hosts each having 1-2 DCs and other VMs for other functions, under normal conditions either you could go with approach
1 or 2 as below
1. Install  ATA lightweight Gateway on each DC - No approved.
2. Install ATA Gateway on Each Hyper-V host to receive Mirrored traffic from DCs on that Hyper-V host -
No feasible
But we need to check the possibility of approach 3, based on the article below

3. DCs on Different Hyper-V hosts to mirror traffic to ATA Gateway(s) on Different Hyper-v Host(s)

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/advanced-threat-analytics/configure-port-mirroring#supported-port-mirroring-options

ATA Gateway
Domain Controller
                           Considerations

Virtual
               Virtual on different hosts

Make sure your virtual switch supports this scenario.

So the bottom line is Does Hyper-V allow or can it be configure to sent the Mirrored Traffic from a VM to a VM on another Host, the configuration could involve power shell.
As per the below article it can capture traffic from Physical machine if port mirroring is configured to the Hyper-V host.

Win 8.1
The symptom is 2 adapters in Device Manager that I can't remove:

From time to time, this problem interferes with the Ethernet card on the PC, and I lose all connectivity for the host OS.  So I really need to fix this.  I've currently recovered connectivity by deleting my VM and the virtual switch in Hyper-V
manager, but I'd like to resolve this problem properly by eliminating these 'unattached' adapters.
I've read many posts and still am not convinced I know which steps to take.  Many of the posts seem a little dated, so I'm concerned I'll create additional problems if I follow old stuff.  Here are a few of the solutions I've seen on the boards:
1) edit the registry, up to 50 times.  This doesn't sound like a great idea but if that's what it takes...

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/20e826af-b484-48d8-ac24-c3e7c4cc30fd/cannot-remove-ms-virtual-network-switch-adapter-leftover-of-hyperv  and

2) remove the adapter in something called the Administrative Website.  I don't really know what that is.  Is that a current piece of software for use with Hyper-V on Win 8+?  I have been using the Hyper-V manager.  Is that not good
enough?  If Administrative Website is relevant, where do I find a copy for Win 8.1?

Hi there
Looking up the licenses for Windows 8 -- what a minefield -- Ms should really sort this out.

It appears that if you use W8 as a VM in HYPER-V you need a separate license !!! but if you use W7 or XP as the VM you can have as before up to 4 separate virtual images on the one license (provided they are identical).

So it would appear most people on these Forums testing W8 as a VM in HYPER-V are breaking the law here.

Chapter and Verse here

Pica Communications Con, Solving the Microsoft Licensing Puzzle

In fact even if you have a (Non Hyper-V) W8 as a VM running under a different HOST OS say W7 it would be illegal to move that image to another machine -- which would hose me up royally as I often use a Virtual machine image on say a USB stick or HDD for testing etc when I'm elsewhere or want to see if the VM will run on a different physical machine when testing.

Ms should allow some simple developer licenses -- we aren't all Enterprise Customers with 100,000's of dollars to spend -- and often the result of individuals tinkering around in the end can bring MORE money to MS as they find uses for windows that Ms would never have thought of.

Now I'm sure Ms isn't going to send the lawyers around to every person testing HYPER-V to see if they are running a W8 VM on it - but Ms really should get its act together over the whole issue of Virtual Machines.

Cheers
jimbo

A:99% of people running W8 in HYPER V are breaking the law

As the title indicated, anybody tried running both successfully on Win 10?

I've seen people doing that on Win 8 forum( Solved Hyper V and VMWare on the same machine - Page 2 ), so I'm wondering if this method would work on Win 10...

Any help/pointers would be great as I need to use Hyper-V for my course and VMware for work.

Thank you.

Solved - that method works!

A:Running Hyper-V and VMware on the same machine?

I have VMWare Workstation 10 installed. Once I enabled Hyper-V to test something but then VMWare would not load. It would display a message that is not compatible with Hyper-V and I should disable it to use it again. I disabled Hyper-V and I am now able to use VMWare again. So yes, you can do it, but not at the same time. To use VMWare you must disable Hyper-V. If you want to use Hyper-V you can temporarily enable it but then you cannot use VMWare. I see no reason enabling Hyper-V if you have VMWare, unless perhaps to use an old virtual machine created with Microsoft Virtual PC or Windows Virtual PC or Hyper-V. But again this machine can be imported and converted to VMWare, I have done that and then I only had to install VMWare Tools to get the drivers.

Hi there.

It seems some CPU's will handle HYPER-V in a VM running on a Host where a HYPERVISOR (KVM in this case) is already running.
One needs to make a few mods otherwise booting up the VM running UNDER the HYPER-V (the 2nd level VM) will freeze.

I'm currently playing with this -- it looks like some modules from QEMU need to be updated -- and one needs to use IOMMU to get any sort of decent I/O throughput - even on SSD's.

I'll post back when I've got some better results -- note I haven't a CLUE about AMD CPU's . I think also getting USB and SOUND on to the second level VM could be a problem. PCI passthru is pretty easy from the KVM Host to the Windows VM (ist level) but passing that to the second level VM is proving somewhat problematical.

(HOST --CENTOS 7 with KVM, ist level VM W10 pro with HYPER-V enabled, second level VM W7 ultimate -- all x-64 machines).

I believe also performance can be improved by switching from Full virtualisation to "Para virtualision" on the guests -- easily enough done with settings in KVM - but then passthru gets a bit ????.

Anyway I've got some time to play with all this --when I'm done I'll post a guide. It should work also for most other common Linux distros capable of running KVM.

Tip - don't use the libvirt manager GUI as a console for your VM's as once in Full screen you can't always get back to Windowed mode -- might be my mouse etc. Use RDP / VNC instead -- no problem connecting to VM's even if you are ru... Read more

Hi there

just thought I'd do a Bonkers experiment - works and isn't too slow (but use SSD !!!).

Host W10 X-64 PRO with HYPER-V

VM1 (ist level VM - 2nd level machine) Linux CENTOS 7 with latest kernel (4.7)

VM2 --installed VMware workstation on the Linux machine (VM1) --created XP VM --works fine !!!!

I know it's Bonkers but I was curious to see if the HYPERVISOR (HYPER-V) on the Host would propagate its properties to a second level machine (VM1) preventing VMWARE workstation from running.

Seems that the XP VM which is using VM1 as its Host doesn't know anything about HYPER-V nor does VM1.

You cannot run vmware and hyper-v at same time, but you can set up windows to do one or other, selecting which at boot time,

From an administrative command prompt make a copy of current boot menu and label it with a suitable label e.g. "No Hyper-V".
Note the first command gives you a GUID and you then copy it and use it with the second command.

C:\>bcdedit /copy {current} /d "No Hyper-V"
The entry was successfully copied to {ff-23-113-824e-5c5144ea}.
C:\>bcdedit /set {ff-23-113-824e-5c5144ea} hypervisorlaunchtype offThe operation completed successfully.

A:How To Install Emulator And Hyper V - Hyper V Won't Install Windows 10

Simple: you have Windows 10 Home edition, it has no Hyper-V. Hyper-V is only available in Pro, Education and Enterprise editions. There's no way you can run Windows Phone emulators because the only way to run them is Hyper-V, which you don't have because of your chosen edition.

You can use Windows 10 Home edition to connect to Hyper-V virtual machines on Pro, Education and Enterprise editions, therefore even the Home edition has parts of Hyper-V to offer this so called Virtual Machine Connection to another Hyper-V server.

In screenshot, green highlight shows the parts of Hyper-V you have in Home edition. They allow you to to connect to so called Hyper-V servers (Windows 10 Pro, Education, Enterprise) and use virtual machines like for instance Windows Phone emulators installed on them over the network.

The parts required for a computer to act as Hyper-V server for virtual machines is highlighted red. That's the parts your Home edition is missing.

Q: Hyper V

Yesterday I decided to see if Hyper V worked on my windows 10 pro (build 10240).

Having never used it before i looked on the internet for it and eventually found out that it is included in windows 10 and that I didnt need to download it. Well I think I dont need to download it. Anyway I found out I needed to go to the Windows Features section in the add/remove programs to enable it. I opened the Windows Features, found the feature I wanted to enable, screenshot attached. I enable Hyper V Management Tools, The progress indicator (green progress bar) said it was applying my changes, then I thought that this is strange because it didnt ask me to restart - I remember from other times Ive used it, I have always had to restart (Ive never used it in windows 10 but in other operating systems). I also thought that the option for Hyper V platform is probably the one that I needed so I enabled that one, it would not let me click in the box next to hyper v platform, I had to first open the option with the + sign but I could only choose Hyper V Services and not Hyper V Hypervisor because it was greyed out.(?) I though that strange because it seemed like the Hyper V virtual machine was what I needed. After I clicked the green bar returned and then I was asked to restart my pc. I let it restart and went away from my laptop for a few minutes. When I came back the laptop screen was black and there was a mouse pointer on it. instruction sets: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, EM64T, VT-X (here's VTx for Hyper-V)
Only VTd I don't know if has and feature SLAT (Second Level Address Translation)

Can anybody explain me this problem?

Thank you for all!

Miro

A:Hyper-V and VTx

Sorry I don't quite understand the problem? Are you able to enable the Hyper-V service?

I have a laptop running windows 7 with a myriad of programs and data on it.  I want to buy a new machine (8.1) and have been told that I can put everything from my old laptop onto it and continue to run the old programs this way.  Does anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks in anticipation and a Happy New Year to one and all.

A:Will Hyper V help?

Hello -
Hyper V from Microsoft pages and a detailed blog of Windows 8 and 8.1 Step-By-Step: Enabling Hyper-V for use on Windows 8.1

Hope they are of more use than me trying to explain it.

I can't run this computer in Hyper-V because the Hyper-V platform is grayed out? This is a snip from the computer and it says I can run in VT-x so why is that?

The reason is simple: Hyper-V 3.0 requires SLAT - a feature, that only the newest processors supports (AMD from K10 onward, Intel iCore i5/i7). I've addressed it a few months ago in [1] (unfortunately in German). It's a penality user has to pay due of a design decision Microsoft made in the past.

Use Virtualbox, they implemented their virtualization engine in a different way, so VT-x is sufficient.

A:Hyper v

Yes, under turn features on or off there is a check box. Will require reboot. I personally prefer VMware Player for the average user.

Hyper-V has been enabled in Windows Features but when the management console appears it offers no list of choices in the righthand menu - just "connect." The lefthand menu is similarly bare.

Perhaps someone has a clue on what's missing, and a step-by-step tutorial on how to recreate the XP-mode experience of Win 7 via Hyper-V in W8.

Intel 2600K
64-bit
8G ram

If you wish to create a virtual machine in the Hyper V platform, Yes.

Our resident "Virtual Guru", @Kari, could elaborate much more on the subject; check Hyper V in the Tutorial section.

I am trying to set a hyperlink address using FileDialog and it keeps telling me the control is read only.

I have a sub function that seperated the hyperlink file name from the path(I would like to store them seperately).

Set dlgopen = Application.FileDialog(msoFileDialogFilePicker)
With dlgopen
.AllowMultiSelect = False
.InitialFileName = "*.*"
.Title = "Select the image you want to associate to this Sheet " & Me.Sheet
If dlgopen.Show = 0 Then
DoCmd.Hourglass (False)
Exit Sub

For Each vrtSelectedItems In .SelectedItems

If DatCnt > 0 Then
DatCnt = 0 ' Dont do this loop again
fn = vrtSelectedItems

For the life of me, I cannot get Hyper-V to install Windows 7 and have things work right away. This is ridiculous, VirtualBox is freeware and does a better job.

Methinks this may be an epic fail.....

A:Hyper-V REALLY needs some work.

I agree that Hyper-V needs some more work done on it, but don't forget that, as part of WDP, it too is in development and as such will likely undergo further development and revision prior to the Beta/RC/RTM releases of the OS.

One of the main problems with this kind of software (and Hyper-V is by no means exclusive here, with the same problems being attributable to alternatives such as VirtualBox et al), is that much of the normal hardware functionality is emulated, often with mixed results. For example, my Tutorial Hyper-V - How to Use in Windows 8 shows Windows Vista SP2 (x86) running as a guest OS, although with no network access. I then installed WindowsDeveloperPreview-32bit-English and got network access straightaway. This was with exactly the same settings in Hyper-V. In both cases, there was no audio, and the graphics were generic.

It would be nice to be able to install an OS under Hyper-V and have full functionality with network connectivity, audio, graphics, etc.

However, I feel that you are always going to get better performance when installing an OS as a native install rather than as a VM, although it is quite likely that VM technology will continue to develop and improve.

Are there any Hyper-V tutorials for Windows 8 so far? Or can anyone provide some help?

I think I might be a Hyper-V convert but right now, that doesn't seem so right now. I installed a VM in Hyper-V and I can't get either sound or Aero to enabled in Windows 7. Right now, I think it's a good attempt by Microsoft but it doesn't float my boat. Or am I doing something wrong here?

Dwarf has written this tutorial Hyper-V - How to Use in Windows 8.

I am currently running Windows Developer Preview 32 bit in Hyper V but have discovered there is no native support for sound and USB integration, your mouse and keyboard do work though.

HI there

particularly @Kari as you are the resident expert on HYPER-V here !!!!

HYPER -V have 2 physical identical INTEL NIC 1Gb/s Wired Lan connectors -- VM gives me 1Gb/s, Windows Host only 100 Mb/s ???

Have switched NIC's and cables --same result.

Since I'm using the VM more I'm happy it's THIS way around (VM networking faster !!) rather than the other - would have thought HOST should have better LAN performance on wired LAN !!! but am confused as to why.

Have I hosed up the HYPER-V switch ??

Host --Windows 10 x-64 PRO

VM's 1) CENTOS 7
2) UBUNTU 14

Note these VM's I ran individually same Network connection speed reported via LAN.

VM

W10 Host

I know it's OK as the hardware LED's on the Nic's indicates GREEN when LAN is 1Gb/s and Yellow for 100 Mb/s

Any ideas ???

Cheers

And, when it's done installing, it booted up as Hyper-V Server. I have no idea on how to bring back W8 on my laptop. I tried pressing F12, but the only OS there is Hyper V. Help... I am studying CPUs in my class at school and my Certifaction book doesnt talk about hyper-threading. I have a pentium 4 running at 3.02 GHz and it has hyper-threading. I must say i do notice a improvment when running multiple programs. But what is hyperthreading?

Thanks much
Sean

A:Hyper-Threading

Take a look at this Sean.

CPU's have execution pipelines; basically an on-chip cache of instructions to execute. Often, to increase speed, CPU's will have multiple pipelines.

Some operations cause what's called a "pipeline stall" - the CPU has to wait for, say, a floating point operation or a memory read. the CPU COULD be doing other stuff.

Hyperthreading is something Intel cooked up to use those "stall slots" in the execution pipeline to run multiple threads while the CPU would otherwise be stalled.
