Lenovo IDEAPAD Y400

Q: Lenovo IDEAPAD Y400

Hey Community, So I sent my laptop to the depot before my warranty expired to fix one of the hinges that supports the screen broke off. After receiving the laptop, I have had connection issues with my wireless. When I'm plug directly to the ethernet, no problem. The connection was spotty with wifi, but it came and went, didn't think too much of a problem. Now, when i'm running off battery only, I cannot connect. I tried resetting, but to no avail. Strangely, when i'm plugged in via adapter for power, I can connect without any issue. The problem is when I'm remote and using battery power, I can't connect at all. Anyone experience this problem? Lenovo won't take back the unit since it's past my warranty period now. It's a minor inconvenience having to sit next to an outlet any time I need to connect via wifi.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo IDEAPAD Y400

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My lenovo Ideapad Y400 has been overheating and shutting down during gaming. The first time this happened when I turned it back on Windows had to do an update (windows 10) I'm pretty sure this was just a coincidence though. This only happens when I'm gaming though and I can usually get it to last longer if I turn the settings to low. I replaced the thermal paste and it actually solved the problem for about 2 weeks without a shutdown and everything worked fine. Before it was shutting off 2-20 minutes into gaming. Just recently it started shutting off again so I decided to make this post.  Here's what I know:My temps run mostly around 40c when idle and 60c when gaming. Most of the time the computer doesn't even feel warm when if happens. My fan speed never really speeds up before it shuts off (or ever actually) even when the computer feels hot the fan sticks to its regular speed. Some people have suggested replacing the thermal pad on the VRAM. Not sure if a thermal pad is the same thing as thermal paste but I'm pretty sure the VRAM wasn't one of the tings I replaced the paste on.I replaced the thermal paste on everything that came with thermal paste (I forget exactly which parts these were but I could find out if it's relevant). There is no way to increase the fan speed on Lenovo's Ideapad models (short of hitting the dust removal feature every 5 seconds). And It wouldn't matter because people who have physically modded their fans and added new ones say it ma... Read more

So I've had this laptop for about 3-4 years, and I've never experienced any problems with it until two days ago. Since then it's been shutting down suddenly on its own without any notice. Things got much worse today to the point where it either shuts down immediately after I try turning it on, or it shuts down within minutes after it has been turned on. I've been looking online and seeing that a lot of people say this may due to core temperature, which I have been observing since yesterday, and it doesn't seem to be temperature. The laptop did turn off once yesterday during gaming, but I was able to turn it back on, and had no problem playing games after that. However, today I was not gaming, and didn't have much things opened, it just keeps on turning off. I don't know if it's just because the computer is old and needs replacement that it's been acting like this for the past two days. I'm hoping that there's something that I can do to extend its lifetime for a bit longer.

I discovered back in August that when lifting the monitor up, the bottom chasis was separating from the top. Upon further investigating, I found out that a small silver barrel used as leverage to prop the monitor open had completely SHATTERED. Furthermore, this barrel also served as a "nut" for the bottom screw to attach the bottom chasis to the top. The material has the consistency of nickel and it astonishes me that Lenovo would use such soft metals at a point where there would be the most structural stress. So I've been researching this issue and it seems that it's ONLY the left hinge that has everyone's laptop in a bind. The problem with mine is that it's is a few months removed from warranty. Prior to purchasing this laptop, I had done a load of research on it and I do not recall this issue coming up. But now that it has happened, it seems to have happened abruptly to a lot of customers. I've noticed that the posts have been popping up consistently since June, July, August, Sept, and now. What I want to know is if anyone has gotten this common issue fixed? And if so, was it under/out of warranty? And if it was out of warranty, did it cost anything? I certainly don't want to pay for a fix since I truly believe it is a design flaw. I also don't believe it's customer induced since it's NECESSARY TO OPEN THE MONITOR TO USE THE KEYBOARD. The laptop has been subjected to NORMAL USE and it has never been dropped on the ground nor seen agressive movements. An... Read more

Hi, i have a old lenovo 3000 Y400 notenook.  Bought it from malasyia and its around 7 years old. my laptop fell and it case broke, hinges broke. But it still worked perfectly fine. this was 2 years ago, i checked it after every few months and it still worked. but i bought new laptop and sort of packed it in a pizza box, as screen had no casing and lower body was damaged as well. 4-5 months ago i removed the laptop HDD and started using as external HDD. finally found 2nd hand body for my laptop, cheap price, so decided to get the laptop fixed. BTW i bought new charger and battery few months before the incident. and also everything was working fine before i took out the HDD as i booted the device and checked. But now it won't boot. it shows power light, but as soon as i press power on button power indicator light turns off and it comes back on after few seconds. i have tried without battery, removed all possible connectors and its just abre minimum like motherboard, RAM, HDD and power switch panel to turn on power. Still same, on motherboard i can see few more lights, 3 led lights that turn on and then off in few secods span. Could it be because of dust? or something esle? because i really doesn't make sense to sped money on repairing it, because getting the 2nd hand body is the last viable option after that its better to buy 2nd hand laptop then spend money on it as it would cost me the same amount.  any suggestion or help would be appreciated. i will ... Hi everyone, Im new to this forum, and I'm using this as a possibility to find a solution to my prblem which i've had for almost 3 weeks and I have not been able to repair, maybe someone from here with way more experience and knowledge than me can help me... Now to the Problem. Basically what I have been experiencing is:1. My computer does not connect to a wifi network (regardelss of the network).2. If it connects it can disconnect randomly and connection don't las too long.3. Succesfull connections depend on the position of my laptop. To be more specific: the closer I am to the modem the better the signal and the speed, but if I take one or 2 steps back the connection speed and signal decreases a lot, to the point that maybe within 10 to 15 steps from the modem it disconnects and the only way to connect again is to stand and connect where the modem is.4. Connection is very unstable.5. I have other devices connected to this networks and the connection and devices work perfectly fine.6. when the pc tries to connect, the wirelss signal drops to 0 and the comes back after it fails to connect. Possible solutions I have tried:1. reset IP adress.2. reset modem.3. resintalled drivers manually after deletion in device administration.4. changed the wireless card for a new one (compatible ill paste the specifics)5. checked for viruses and malware with rkill, ultraadwarekill, tdsskiller, adwcleaner, etc...6. did a scan with Lenovo companion software and failed to pass the... Hey guys, so I have ran into a problem during the past couple of days. I bought a Lenovo Y400 laptop around last May, and have played many games (ex: Diablo III, Starcraft II, Bioshock, The Witcher II, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare) at very high graphics settings without any lag.

A couple days ago, I turned my computer on and started trying to play Starcraft II, but was met by extreme lag and choppiness. Even when I turned the graphics settings from Extreme down to the lowest possible settings, the game still did not run smoothly and was quite laggy.

I hadn't used my computer for a couple days prior to the FPS problem, so there were no installations or anything that could have potentially caused the problem.

Today I cleaned my fan with compressed air, but that didn't seem to do anything. I also ran a full system scan with Bitdefender Internet Security 2014, but no viruses were found.

Around the same time I experienced the FPS drops I also noticed that my computer was quite a bit noisier than usual, but was blowing room temperature air and did not seem to be overheating.

I have no idea what this problem could be, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi.I have Lenovo Y400 with Windows 10 updage, since I've been upgraded from Windows 7. Currently I have problems with external usb 3.0 hdd because of lack of Intel chipset drivers for C216 chipset Intel HM76 motherboard. External usb hdd occasionally fails to be regonized by system and doesn't work until I uplug it and plut it again.According to Intel's community they don't support this motherboard as it is shipped as OEM for laptop manufacturers, so I'm asking my question here. Is Lenovo Y400 model already obsolete and we won't get Windows 10 upgrade with drivers ugraded?

Hi all!

This is my first time posting here, and I tried to look through some of the past threads but none of them were quite like the problem I've been having. Here are the specs for my laptop which was purchased just earlier this month, first off:

The problem I've been having is this: Lately, for the past 2-3 days or so, my wifi adapter would suddenly die-- meaning I can't connect to my home router or anyone else's, and when I try to use Windows' "Troubleshoot problems" feature, it would always get stuck at either "looking for problems with connectivity" or "resetting your wifi adapter". When I try to go into the advance settings to manually disable/enable my wifi adapter for myself, it would never actually work. When I try to click on the icon in the system tray, nothing would happen and it wouldn't pop up with the list of available networks like usual.

At this point, the only thing I can do is restart or shut down my laptop, but sometimes even that doesn't go throu... Read more

So everything has been working fine on my laptop until about 10:30PM EST tonight. I bought it new in August 2011.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
HD: 750 GB
It's always been a fine machine with NO problems.
However, last night there were Windows 7 updates that were installed and then restarted my computer. I had not gotten a chance to check exactly what they were though. About 10:30 this evening, flash crashed in Mozilla Firefox which is not that uncommon, and from there Firefox closed, and so did my Microsoft Word and Excel apps that were open. From there, my computer began to shut down and restart. When it went to restart, all it could do was go to the opening Lenovo screen which gives you the F2 (setup option) and F12 (multiboot menu option) as it typically does. Besides a thin strip at the top that appeared after about 30 secs that only displays moving static that eventually will just stick, that is where the boot process ends. No Windows 7 screen, and certainly no opportunity to boot into safe mode to check for any problems. The screen freezes and goes nowhere.
So basically, all I'm getting in terms of boot options are lenovo features, not windows 7 features, meaning it won't boot into windows 7 or windows 7 safe mode no matter what I try. The biggest problem here is that I have no windows 7 disc to even try to boot from my dvd drive.
Anybody have any suggestions on what the probl... Read more

I am totally disappointed in Lenovo's customer support. My lenovo 710s was bought less than 1 year ago (as of 10/6/2017, when I sent it in for repairs) and had 2 years warranty (1+1 year of extended warranty). I sent my laptop for repair due to a white spot issue on the monitor, affecting viewing of webpages and videos. However, the laptop was returned after 3 weeks without any fixes/repairs, as Lenovo claimed that it was a cosmetic issue. I wrote a message on their customer care website on 3/7/2017. However, they ignored me and there was no reply to date.  I thought Lenovo is a reliable and popular brand. However, it turned out to be a horrible decision, much to my dismay!

Hello! I am new to Lenovo and picked up my 1st laptop yesterday when my HP died. I have always had HP and grew tired of how easy they break & poor battery life, so I wanted to try a different band. I love the computer, the keyboard, track pad & screen are amazing. I bought the ideapad 320-15IAP for about $330 (Including tax) The specs at the store advertised 4.5-5 Hours of battery life, but I have not been able to get a charge better than 2 hours. For someone that uses my laptop at work and on the go, this will not do. Can any one offer up any advice? Does lenovo sell stronger batteries for ideapad that I can replace with this current battery?  My next issue is the Windows 10 update that you are forced to do, I have been trying to install it since 9PM last night, it is now 9PM tonight, a full 24 hours, and it has not fully installed. I have done my fair share of google searches and many people have had these same issues too, but no good solutions outside of deep computer hacking, I don't want to have to do that on a brand new computer. Thanks for any and all help!

It was my 6th and last Lenovo laptop ever. I'm professional engineer since 1997 and I know how to work on hardware. 1. After 1 month of usage Lower Case was broken when I just touched it.2. After 4 month of usage Display's mounts were completely destroyed. When I opened the case I found that Lower Case plastic was made of **bleep**. It was very easy to break this "plastic" just when touching by a finger.3. After 10 month I got a few drops of rain over the keyboard. I dried it with fan (for 24 hrs). But it doesn't help me. Now I use external keyboard. btw on lenovo ideapad 510-15ikb it is not easy to replace a keyboard. The biggest problem -  live in Thailand, where technical support is very long and can't give you any guarantees. Conclusion: I have almost new laptop (less than 1 year old) which is absolutely in troubles. And (once again) this is not my first laptop, but I never ever had anything even close to this. I still like Lenovo's design, but it seems like they choose a wrong OEM.I will never buy any Lenovo devices again and I will tell about it to as many people as I can.  I'm not looking for support, I just want Lenovo people to know that they do wrong business now. This is not good to be so greedy.

I have a y400. Ever since I got it (in January) the keyboard randomly locks up, puts in 3.bn/ random characters and stuff. I think I'll leave what it randomly types because it might help us diagnose the problem (if I can fix it). The symptom of the keyboard entry is usually all stuff from the top row of the keboard, qwertuiop,.z*cx20193 After its done typing, the keyboard locks up until one of the keys that can change focus is pressed like the windows key or the right click context key. This has 3.bneen going on through several reinstalls and didn't happen during the short time I used Ubuntu on this laptop. I don't think that this is a virus (unless my recovery image has the virus) bn3./  because this was happening during the windows 8 OOBE during the last 3.bn/ reinstall.  I'mz*cx20193 going to go back through and bold what the keyboard entered on its own. Also, it tried to navigate away from this page several times while I was building this post.

hi jesanfafon,
Thank you for using Lenovo Community Forums!
This kind behavior behavior is definitely Hardware.
You can try resetting your BIOS to default by Presing F2 or Fn+f2 to boot to Setup utility
-Press F9 to load defaults -> Press Enter for Yes

Do a Power Drain by Removing Battery and AC,

You can also try
Run the computer without the battery

It started getting worst so I checked the task manager and it was pushing 100% in disk usage of which I noticed a couple of problem processes that it would get caught in mostly during idle those being:SuperfetchWindows SearchBITS Background Intelligent Transfer ServiceExpressCache So I have turned these off, I also have set my virtual memory to 8gb and a max of 16gb like some have suggested when they are hitting 100% disk usage, that worked for another couple days but now I am still having the issue. I went ahead and updated all of my drivers and got microsoft up to date and in some cases that helped like for my audio drivers which had a process "windows audio device graph isolation" which would hit 100% disk usage when running any programs that used the mic, but I noticed after a couple of days these processes would again have trouble almost like they got corrupted. Finally on one of the freezes right before the computer came to a standstill I got an alert from the intel rapid storage technology program that the "sata drive was removed", which is were the OS is stored. Any thing I have yet to try that you think would help? I am at the point were I am stepping on glass to keep this thing from freezing (no running any programs, games, or any apps) just to keep it running.

A:Y400 100% disk, freezes

I solved this problem on my new Z70-80, because pagefile.sys would hog the system for 40 seconds or more at a time. Bottom line, I disabled my page file and upgraded my memory. I hope this helps.
