Q: Computer running slow. Internet disconnects when I leave computer...

I've been having this problem with my computer running slow and also my computer internet connection disconnecting whenever I leave the computer for a short period of time. I always have to restart my computer in order to get it working again. I've done all of the scans. No problems show up. I'd greatly appreciate your help. Thanks! Here is my log:

Preferred Solution: Computer running slow. Internet disconnects when I leave computer...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My computer has been randomly freezing/ completely stopping. While my internet has been randomly connecting then disconnecting over and over. My best guess would be possible keylogger but i dunno. Hopefully no malware/spyware/virus though.

Hi, I am a newbie and this is my first post.
I have been reading about a topical choice: which is better - shut the computer down after use or leave it running.
I can see advantages on both sides but I would like a technical answer. Please help.

A:Leave computer running or shut down

Taking into consideration motherboard stress during post/boot, powering up everything related to computer operations [such as printers, scanners, USB boxes, external whatevers]; and considering HDs constantly spinning; considering saving on electricity bills and wear/tear on active-on stuff, wifey and I have done this for many years now:
Whoever powers up first, leaves it on. Whoever is the last person standing or sitting at night, powers everything down.
Exception: when I know she's not going to be on computer, I'll power down from early morning quick-look-at-somethings session.

I want to leave my X1 Carbon (5th Gen) running overnight, but I also don't want the room glowing from the screen while I try to sleep. How can I turn off the screen completely? I can only get it to dim to about 10% brightness  but I want the screen completely off while the machine continues to run -- backing up, downloading large files, running long processes, etc. all things that I don't need to be looking at the screen for.  This is my first ThinkPad, and before I had a Macbook Air, which I could turn the screen off completely. Surely there must be a way to do it on the ThinkPad, no?

As the subject suggests, I'm having really slow computer/internet problems. My OS is Windows XP, Home Edition with Service Pack 2. HP Pavillion with Intel Celeron 2.7 GHz, 504 MB. I'm also having issues with popups from time to time, and if I'm running a search through yahoo or google, when I click the link, a new window opens up with crap I didn't want.
I did buy an external hard drive, with 1 TB of memory. My computer is showing only 2.94 GB of space remaining, so there isn't much on that. Not sure how to make the most of the external drive other than dragging all my pics and vids over.
Please help with all the above. Thanks

A:Slow Running Computer and Internet

I think you should have 10% free space on your hard drive, minimum, and anything less than 20% and you should be looking for an upgrade in hard drive or move the data off of it.

Service Pack 3 is more secure than SP2, and I definately think you should install that. A fragmented hard drive will slow you down. Here is the best defrag program I've ever found:

http://www.mydefrag.com/

Running the "monthly" script might take 12 hours to complete. I've seen 15 second improvements in boot times just by running this program. It has a great screen saver too, if you can get it to work.

Uninstall everything you know you don't need or use, and research everything you aren't sure of and get rid of whatever you don't use of that stuff too. The less you run, the faster the computer will be. Get rid of, uninstall or delete/turn off anything that has the words "toolbar", "updater", etc...

For the past few months i have noticed that my Vista HP Pavilion dvd6565us has been running really slow.  Typically to open an internet browser it takes a minute and then everything seems to happen in slow motion once it gets online.  Also the fan always seems to be running and the bottom of the laptop gets really hot.  Finally I have the free comcast version of Norton 365 and it is always telling me that I have high disk usage host process for windows services. Anyone know if there is something wrong with the computer.  I have run Comodo Dragon, Norton Anti Virus and Malware bytes with nothing being detected.  Also when I run a full scan on Comodo or Norton it can take over 24 hrs to run a full scan.
Thanks!

Mod Edit: Moved topic from logs forum. No logs posted. ~bloopie

A:Slow Computer, Internet Lag and Fan always running

Really hot usually means really dirty or fans are not working. Since you say fans are running then
the first thing to do would be to open up the comp and do a thorough cleaning.

EDIT: Copied from here: HP DV Series dv6565us Fan Repair Guide | Installation Video

.......you will need to open up your laptop. You can do this by removing the screws from the bottom of the laptop.
2. Once the screws have been removed from the bottom of your laptop, you can now remove the keyboard and plastic bezels from your HP dv6565us laptop.
3. You will see your HP dv6565us Fan and Heat Sink exposed.
4. Use a screw drivers and remove the screws from you HP dv6565us Heat Sink Fan.
5. Before reinstalling the new HP dv6565us Fan onto your laptop, you can clean the HP dv6565us Fan. To clean your Fan and Heat sink, use a can of air and blow out any dirt from your HP dv6565us Fan. You can also use a paint brush to clean out the dirt from the hard to get areas. Sometimes cleaning your HP dv6565us laptop fan will actually repair it. Dirt can cause the HP dv6565us Laptop Fan to make noise and even stop spinning properly.

Hi, My computer has been running very slow as of late. The internet is constantly freezing. I get an error alot saying "The program is not responding" "Internet explorer has to close" or something similar to that. It wont even load pages sometimes then just kicks me off explorer. I notice everytime i go onto explorer there is a pop up about keeping my current search engine cause there is another one trying to redirect me? .. This all just came out of the blue. The computer was running fine then one day all of this just started snow balling.

Thank You for anyhelp you can give

I have windows xp on a compaq..I also am using aVg and zonealarm for security, which I regularry update. The problem that I am having is first, when I click on internet exploer it takes 2 1/2 minutes before I can even do anything, and I have high speed internet through comcast. Also i am missing the toolbar file print, etc., I do see a thing at the top that says file, but when I click on it, nothing happens, my page freezes then it eventually closes itself out. Also, on my automatic updates, it will not install updates for microsoft office. It shows them that I need them, but will not install them. I also am trying to run hijack but either it is taking a very very very long time, or it is not working, but if it does i will post a log. ANy help would be appreciated.

Ok so, first of all im alex, this is my first post on this forum you guys have got

i have just yesturday bought an Acer 5536-644G32MN Laptop which is running vista.

i have a dialup internet connection (ha ha, please dont tell me to just get broadband)
which on my desktop computer running windows XP works fine,

Yesturday when i tried dialing up to my connection useing the inbuilt modem in my laptop, it connected but i noticed it was quite slow,
as in would take a few minutes to load google,
i went out for the day because i had other things to do,
when i came home later i tried the internet again, and it was working fine, just as well as it works on this desktop computer im on now.

now tonight when i tried connecting to the internet again it was realy really slow again, it would say its connected fine and running at 52kb but it wasnt loading pages
and 4 out of 5 times it would fail to sign into msn, and when it did sign in it woudl take a few minutes to show people online and then a minute later it would lose the connection to msn and sign out.
very frustrating
the inbuilt modem is a 56k ITU v.92 wake on ring ready (in the book it says that)

can anyone shed some light on the situation

i ahve tried disabling the mcaffee firewall on my laptop but that made no difference,

im not sure if this is a vista problem or something else

any tips?

A:Internet Running extremly slow (new computer)

Hi Alex, welcome to Tech Support Forums, First of all..... Get broadband :) Im just kidding, however that would solve your problem :P Have you contacted your ISP at all? They may need you to add some modem strings so your modem and isp can 'play nicely' that happens alot with software based modems, which are in most laptops.

My computer is running very slow recently, especially the internet. A website which only takes 2 seconds for it to load will take my computer at least 6 seconds to load. I have been trying quite a few websites, and it does the same. My computer always takes longer time than other pc.

I ran the HJT program and have it posts. Hope this will help. I also run the defragment all the time. My computer has Pentium III 935MGz, 512 PC133 Ram. Thank you.

Lately I have noticed that my internet is running slow on 1 of the 2 computers I have at home. I have one computer wired into my router and one wireless. The wireless one runs fine, the one that is wired is running a lot slower. This problem pc is a lot faster than the wireless one so I don't believe its hardware I have comcast and a motorola wr850g router.

At first I thought someone was stealing my wireless so I called motorola and they had me setup some additional security and and gave me some advice. That didn't help.

Next I called comcast and they said my modem and everything else they saw was fine.

So I began to optimize my pc and do some test and so far nothing has helped. I unplugged my router and ran the modem straight to my pc and things seemed to work fast like normal for a few minutes, then slow again. I unistalled a few apps, ran hijackthis, spybot s&d, tried new ethernet cables and still things run slow on this one computer. I also ran tcpview and didn't really notice anything that just stuck out. There are a few times when things have worked normal but its only for a few minutes after a change, like unhooking my router or plugging my pc to a different port on my router.

Here is my hijackthis log.

I decided to reformat my machine because it had additional problems as well. I had actually been troubleshooting this for over a week and tried everything and just said the heck with it. The internet is running much faster like it should now. Thanks for the advice. It was definitely software based but I couldn't figure what it was or when I picked it up.

I've just set up a new computer in the office (actually it's about 18 months old but been sitting in its box all this time). We have a small office network (peer to peer) which was no problem to set up, the computer connects directly to the internet over this network. Each computer has its own IP address and are connected through an ethernet switch. The ADSL router is connected to the same ethernet switch. We have no problems with this set up on any other of the computers in the office, however the new machine (running IE 6 on XP Pro) takes an age to download pages (up to five minutes per page), other sofware is fine. Can anyone help with this. I've attached a Hijack this report in case this helps.

A:Internet Explorer running very slow on new computer

The first thing I would do is upgrade the XP PC to IE8 and see if there is any improvement. Don't go up to IE9 as that is not compatible with WinXP.

The Hijackthis log looks fine.

I have been having some issues for the last few weeks with my internet. The computer does seem to be running fine most of the time but when I am responding to my emails, or writing new emails using internet explorer 11, it just is so slow, I start typing and takes a few seconds for the typing to catch up, and I am not even a fast typer.  There is a delay of at least two to three seconds before I can continue typing my email. Browsing and downloading speeds seem to be fine. I ran a number of tools to see if this would be a virus, some tools I ran I do not know how to interpret the results. I am using windows 7 professional. Office 2007 (I am not using outlook for my emails I log into the webbased interface to do the majority of my emails. Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the t... Hi Guys,

I'm trying to fix my old man's Toshiba laptop for him as it seems to have become infected with something nasty.  This "something" is causing the computer to run very, very slowly and is stopping access to the internet - the wireless and LAN connections both appear active however Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, software updates etc. are all not working.

I ran Malwarebytes a few days ago which detected and removed a few problems but it still did not fix the speed or internet issues.  Norton 360 has also been running in the background and popped-up saying it had found and removed a virus of some sort.  In my own wisdom and impatience prior to seeking expert advice from here, I downloaded and ran ComboFix which took plenty of time to run but doesn't appear to have fixed the problems - hopefully I didn't do any damage!

The laptop in question is a Toshiba running Windows XP Professional.  I'm trying everything I can to fix it rather than format it given the amount of data / programs I'd have to reinstall upon wiping it clean.

Pretty sure I have the Malwarebytes and ComboFix logs if required.  Happy to run any other logs or provide any other info which may be useful.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Forgot to add that Malwarebytes and Norton 360 aren't picking up any problems now even though the abovementioned problems still exist.

Cheers

A:Computer running very slow and internet not working - infected?

Since you have a ComboFix log...please follow Steps 6-8 of the Prep Guide and initiate a new topic in the forum which contains the Preparation Guide, Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html .

Paste your CF log data into the post, along with the requested DDS log.

Once that is done, this topic will be closed to avoid confusion.

Hey guys, I just built my computer yesterday, and while I was at my girlfriends house I was downloading at about 1 mb/s. She had wireless internet through a USB port. Now I am back at my house running a cat5 through a router and I am down to 130 KB/s. What the hell? I was in awe when I saw this and still am, whats going on?

A:running extremely slow internet on brand new computer

Do you and your girlfriend have same ISP, and same internet subscription packages ?
What kind of internet connection do you have ?
If you are getting very slow speed than advertised by your ISP, then call them now.

All of a sudden My computer is running super slow, and when I try to use the internet it's even slower. Sometimes it wont even go to a second website, it just times out. I've tried restarting many times. Last week, it was running a little slow so I did a registry cleaner to make it faster. It worked really well for a couple days, and now it's just awful. A pop-up did come up that looked like my avg saying that i had an infection, but I did control alt delete and closed that out. But then when I ran an avg scan, it said there was nothing. Also, when I start my computer, a message comes up that says "Malicious Software Removal tool is trying to make changes on your computer, is this ok?" It has been saying that since the last time I used bleepingcomputer.com to remove a virus, so i never really thought much of it, but thought I would point that out as well. thank you so much! I really appreciate your help with this! You guys are the best!

Hi! First wanted to say thanks. This is an awesome site! Without it, I would not have found out about SpyBot and HijackThis! Thanks again!

Here goes--
My computer (especially the Internet) started running a lot slower in the past couple of days. I ran SpyBot and cleaned up cookies, etc. Then I ran HijackThis for a Log File to post on here.

Also, when I turn on my computer and log into my 2nd account (I have two on here), it takes forever to cycle through. I know I have a lot of stuff in my StartUp menu and have disabled all the ones that I can figure out how to.
I have to disable a bunch of them Individually each time I log in. Talk about a pain!!
I have yet to figure out how to disable the rest of them. Any help would be appreciated!!

Here is a log file of my system right when I log into the account. This is after I ran SpyBot and cleaned the system.

A:Computer & Internet running slow - already ran SpyBot and HijackThis--Help!

I do know that Norton Utilities can slow ya' down dramatically. If you look at your list, it is pronounced throughout. Maybe you could try disabling some of the features temporarily (leave antivirus on) to see if they are making the difference.

As for stopping other programs from starting up automatically when you power up, most programs have an option for this somewhere. (usually in options or tools, ect.) Look for something like: Start with Windows, or Run at Startup, & select not to. This is the first way I suggest, but there are others. Be sure to only stop the ones you don't want to run all the time. (most) I turn off just about everything except antivirus & firewall, & then I turn on as I need to use them.

Another thing I suggest, & actually before anything, is to try to find what is hurting most. Try to just shutdown a running program 1 @ a time, until you find what's draining you. A good peice of info to have in your hand.

I have a 10mb/ps signal.. but my internet runs at dial-up speeds at best. I have run SUPERAnti-Spyware almost daily, restored my system, cleaned Private Data, everything I can think of..

Internet runs decent on a laptop also in the house. We're running a single-port modem b/c the ISP is retarded and can't get a networking modem to work.

I dont know what else to say.. i'm irritated, the cable company has been out here 4 times in 2 weeks and not a thing has changed, and they are so incredibly simple minded.

Here is my HJT log.. again.. looking for something that could slow only my internet down..
