Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

Q: Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

My laptop HDD recently would not load windows. So i installed the OS on a different drive. Now, when i connect the old drive VIA USB 2.0toSATA it will not show up in My Computer. Disk Management will not show the drive either. The HDD is getting power, i can hear the disk spinning.

Preferred Solution: Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
Right mouse click on My Computer
Left click on Manage
Left click on Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (the one that has no description)
Right mouse click - Uninstall
Turn off the external USB hard drive
Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver

Open 'Administration Tools', select 'Computer Management', click on 'Disk Management' and see if it can be seen here. If it does show here, chances are it doesn't have a drive letter assigned. If this is the case, right click on the drive, select "Change drive Letter...', and assign a drive letter to it.

If it was not seen there, go to 'Action' on the menu bar, click on 'Rescan Disks' and it should come up. If necessary assign a drive letter to as described above.

Dell Precision 4300 laptop T9300 2.5ghz processor running windows XP pro. Have a WD 400 passport external drive (powered through usb) that worked great for 6 months. Having problems recognizing the drive on usb port. Have a powered Hitachi drive that fine in the same port. Took WD passport and placed it on another computer and it works fine. When plugged into my laptop I can hear it fire up and the indicator light is on. WD troubleshot with me and we eliminated my drivers etc and same result. They warrantied the drive and new one has same issue. Tried a different cable. Dell troubleshot with me and diagnosed bad motherboard. Tech came to house and replaced motherboard with same results. Flashed bios and removed/installed drivers again same result. Drive will appear under device manager butI can't get to it. Part of my computer will lock up when drive in port and unfreeze when I pull it out. Also will see drive appear under my computer when removing usb cable. If I remove usb drivers and power up with WD plugged in occasionally I will be able to get to unit but it will freeze.

I have a Sabrent 2.5" hard drive enclosure SBT-EKU25 that I am trying to use with USB on a Windows 7 laptop. The drive works but stops doing anything for several minutes at a time. There are no error messages, it just stops... no flashing or steady light. A minute or two later it picks up where it left off as though nothing has happened. It will then run fine again for several seconds and then it goes back to "sleep". I am trying to use the drive to backup files and it spends more time sleeping than doing anything else.

The drive enclosure does not come with any drivers and is supposed to be plug and play. I have checked the USB drivers and Windows says they are up to date. I have installed a 60Gb hard drive from an old laptop in it.

If i plug the the drive into the USB port on my Windows XP desktop it works fine.

What type of drive did you put in the enclosure? According to Sabrent's web site it only works with IDE drives.

I have a Compaq desktop with an
AMD Athlon 1.1GHZ
128MB of RAM
a 16mb TNT video card
and 60GB HDD

I tried to reformat the hard drive because I initially had a virus on it - so the only means was to format it. The first time I reinstalled it successfully with a copy of a WinXP Pro cd, that came with a dell laptop of mine. BIG MISTAKE-- the computer tripped out and was asking for authentication. No problme arised yet, windows xp installed, and authentication was the only thing that was being irritating.

I commensed to reformat the hard drive with nothing in it except the OS installed, with a different copy of WinXP that did not come with my dell laptop. In the middle of reformatting, however, about 51% complete, I powered down the computer because I thought it would not hurt the formatting process, so I could take it back to the owner's house and finish up the reformatting process there, and at the same time be able to hang out at their pool. the old idea of "kill two birds with one stone" or something. >_< I feel pretty stupid. I hope you guys don't chew me out now, but yeah.

So I tried to turn the computer on again later on to finish reformatting. I pressed the power button and everything seemed to go right, until nothing appeared on the monitor. the monitor stays black, with an orange 'standby' light as if the computer was on standby.

I have a USB powered Maxtor 320GB portable HD connected to Windows XP laptop. As it got close to being full it has started to give me "Delayed write error". Sometimes I can access the drive and the files but sometimes the folders show as being empty. Sounds like it is dying. What can I do? What is the best way to save the data and copy it to another drive? At the moment it is not possible to copy data from the drive as it will fail half way through the transfer.

any advice appreciated

I use a Seagate USB 3.0 external hard drive to do automated system backups on a weekly basis, using both Windows and Acronis. I have always left this drive on all the time, even though I only use it weekly.

I have read where some users power their external hard drives off between backups.

Any recommendations on the best thing to do.......leave it on or turn it off?

Thanks in advance.........

A:Is It Best to Keep External Backup Hard Drive Powered Off

If you can disconnect this drive when backups are not happening, you increase your odds of not having any viri or malware hitting the ext HD. Other than that, disconnecting and powering off ext HD saves some wearNtear on said device.

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

A:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

Hi, first time posting on here, so hello to all. You guys are great, and I'm hoping you can help me.

I have a old hard drive that is dying in a computer (this computer isn't mine, I'm doing this for someone else), and I've managed to copy all the data off that drive to another drive. I purchased a new 80G Western Digital ATA/100 hard drive to replace the dying one (which is some ancient behemoth that's 8G in size). Now my first plan was to simply take out the old hd, install the new one, install the OS and then transfer the afore-mentioned data onto the new hard drive.

This plan did not work. Plugged in the new hard drive and got a "hard disk failure" message on boot up. Ran the DOS utility that came with new hd to format the drive, still no go.

Next, I took the new hd out of that computer, connected it to another computer, reformatted the drive, put the drive back in the original computer, still no.

Took the drive back out, reconnected it to my old pc, reformatted the drive AGAIN, this time as a boot drive, disconnected the hard drive that's in my old pc and booted from the new drive. Everything booted no problem. Took the drive back out, put it in the original computer, and no. Still got the "hard disk failure" message.

Took the old (dying) hd, reconnected it, connected the new hd as a slave, and tried to format it that way. The new hd doesn't show up at all. Tried running the utility provided by Western Digital, b... Read more

I bought a new western digital 320gb sata hard drive. I was going to replace my old ide hard drive but when i plug in the new hard drive the bios says its only 134gb and when I try to install windows when it tries to start formatting the hard drive it says disk is not accessible. I tried booting up the old hard drive with the new sata hard drive pluged in and when windows starts it says its installing new hardware and it comes up as the correct medal and it says new hard disk but it doesn't show up in my computer. However when I got to device manager its there and it says the device is working properly. Any suggestions? or is the drive just now compatible or what?

A:New hard drive won't show up

OK first if your xp has service pak 2 you should be ok
but on safe side you need the drivers for sata controller loaded when insrtalling new OS press F6 or so then add the drivers from the disc your got from MB manufactorer
check your bios for new update may need it for to handle 48bit LBA hard drives config(very large drives)
for some reason sometimes even the great MS does not handle some drive right
3rd party drive manager I use paragon and acronis
do search here again someone just mentioned techspot link for large drive reg fix also

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Hitachi Travelstar 30gb 4200RPM (used) for my Sony Picturebook C1VPK which was running a 15gb. When I went to install the hard drive the system recognized it as a 30gb so I was feeling pretty happy. Unfortunately, when I went to install a fresh copy of Windows NT, when I got to the create partition portion of the install, the system only recognized 7gb. I am a little puzzled as to how this is happening. So I decided that maybe there was a fluke so I install the OS and when I got it booted noticed that my partitioned drives only had 3gb and 4gb respectively. I am curious as to what has happened to the rest of the space on the hard drive and if it is recoverable. I should mention that my laptop does not have any external drives such a floppy or cd-rom. So that was why I was going with a fresh install of the OS by way of a USB HD enclosure from another computer. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Make it a great day!

I just replaced my Power supply yesterday, and everything seems to be working good. I'm still pretty worried about it blowing up and making me spend even more to fix, but it doesn't seem to be going down that path!

However, I do have an issue.

My Internal Hard drive and CD rom drive now cause the "safely remove hardware" icon to show up. And they are selectable. I have an external hard drive, psp, and ipod, so I am constantly accessing that section to remove them. It is only a matter of time before i accidently select my cd rom or actual hard drive on accident.

So did I do something wrong installing the new power supply? or is this normal.

I just bought a computer a few weeks ago and I put in a 120 gig Western Digital hard disk (IDE) from my old computer. The problem is that the new drive doesn't always show up in Windows XP. Whenever I do a cold boot it won't show up. However, as soon as I restart it shows up (ie. appears in My Computer). The drive is always recognized in the BIOS, just not always in Windows. The other drive that I use is a SATA drive and it works perfectly. I never had any problem with it whatsoever when it was in my previous computer. Any idea as to what could cause this and how to fix it?

I say, try to reformat the HD (if you can). You can back it up before you format. It might solve the problem. GOOD LUCK.

So basically I have a 400 gb hard drive that has been working fine till yesterday.

I think it is a WD drive, it is internal.

I have to hard drives in my windows xp. The operating system is on the c drive but I added an internal drive to have more memory and use it mostly just for storage like music, movies etc. Yesterday I went to copy something from my desktop which is on the C drive into the F drive (this is the add-on drive that is not working properly) and it started copying but about half way through I got some errors and than the F drive disappeared from under my computer. I restarted the computer but I got an error stating that this is not drive plugged in to SATA 2, which was the location of the F drive. After a while passed I restarted the computer again but this time it would load without an error but once it gets past the windows booting screen the screen would go blank and nothing will happen.

I've ran the computers hard drive diagnostics and on the WD hard drive it just says fail but all the other drives and the cd-roms load fine.

The computer starts up fine with the F drive disconnected. Could it be that the F drive crashed and is lost?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a possibility but if you haven't already, check the connections of the cables to make sure they aren't loose. If that doesn't do anything, try replacing the cable.

Hello everybody,

I am using an asus X52JE with windows home premium *64bit. I have an external hard drive (Lacie, 1TB) that is not recognised by this computer but works perfectly on others. I have checked every other usb port, and used another usb key that my computer recognised (so my usb ports work).

The hard drive does not appear on device manager AND on devices and printers, I can not see it anywhere, but I can hear it "run". It has no on/off button.

Could someone help me?

Thank you

PS, I have already tried this :

1. Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
2. Right mouse click on My Computer
3. Left click on Manage
4. Left click on Device Manager
5. Expand the USB list
6. Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive ==> where is it supposed to be, i can not see a "lacie" name
7. Right mouse click - Uninstall
8. Turn off the external USB hard drive
9. Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver

My machine O/S is Windows XP SP3 with all current updates.

A few months ago I had a problem with my boot Hard Drive (blue scree and error code indicated lost boot sector). I installed a new hard drive and rebuilt my system .

I have some files that were not backed up on the HD and would like to try to recover some of these files .
The HD is Samsung SP4002H 40GB IDE Drive. I have put the HD in an external Drive enclosure (Sabrent ECS-STU35) and connected it to my PC via USB. When I turn on the drive enclosure:

Device Manger shows a SAMSUNG SP4002H USB Device entry under Disk Drives; and
a USB Mass Storage Device entry is under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
The HD from the Drive enclosure does not appear in My Computer or in Windows Explorer.
The HD from the Drive enclosure does not appear under Disk Managment.
Under Disk Management I do see 2 Hard drives (Disk 0 is a 500GB and Disk 1 is 120 GB) - the 40GB drive is not present.
I suspect that my original problem with the 40 GB HD was a damaged boot sector and partion table.

I am looking for ideas on how to make the drive visible to to Windows XP and also some thoughts on how to partition table and files.

Thanks for your help

A:Hard Drive Not Show in WIN XP Disk Management

how about putting it into slave and then you can use it to recover all files that have not been corrupted by the bad sectors. you can also get your HDD tables by formatting it when it's slave...

although its not clear why you didnt bother replacing the damaged boot file with the install disc, its only one or two files...and if your lazy like me put the install disc in and do a recovery install, it looks like a normal install but it replaces all the original files like bootloader and other things that i cant think of right now...

So my external Seagate hard drive wont show up when I plug it into my macbook pro. The hdd blinks when I plug it in, and while plugged in, disk utility will not launch. I formatted my hdd a while back to exFAT, thinking it would help since I switch between windows and macs a lot, but for some reason it will never load. I have tried using Terminal to mount it as well. After typing in the proper commands and waiting as it runs, I get "Volume on disk2s1 timed out waiting to mount"

What do I do?

PS- there is a corresponding picture of the failing disk utility

Guys, thanks in advance. Long story long. Motherboard on old XP machine went. Samsung 320g Hard drive still good. Buy new 7 Pro pc. PC guy, (VERY, VERY bad guy) does manage to "move my old data" over to new pc. Its there. Get old HD and old PC back. But then I notice not "all" of the data is there. No problem. Buy little black box, install old HD, and hook up via USB. Uh oh. Blank. RATS. (did I mention bad guy?) But wait, its says its 160 free. Where's the other half? Obviously I can't get any info from him, so before I assume he stripped it clean, is there any way to "see" the other half of this old Samsung 320g hard drive? I don't want to partition it, or clean install it, I want to "find" it. I copied a file over to it, and the new file is there, so the 160 side is working, I'm just hoping and praying the "other" side is there somewhere with all my old data! Thanks in advance.

Also, on Disk Management: New Volume, Basic, Heathly (Primary Partition) 149.05 GB NTFS

PhotoRec will find your files. (and it's free!) They won't have the orginal file names but just a generic file number. But after you recover them you can sort by file extension and size. Runs in Windows too. Even worked on my crashed Raid 01. (Recovered some important files, for that I dug up a donation. :-)

TestDisk Download - CGSecurity

Good luck.

I know little about SMart data only that it doesn't always tell in time your drive is failing but that when it does mention something is wrong it should be taken serious right?

So you be the judge.

I used two different smart readers to be sure that the info shown is correct.

So is my windows drive in good health or not?

Because both programs report good I wouldn't worry about them if they were my drives.
You could test them with the manufactures test program.

Ok, painful question here. What am I missing? 2 1/2 year old Dell crapped out, Hard drive failure of complete and utter magnitude. Ok, so had to get a new hard drive. Did so, installed it, but didn't have the OS CD that came with it, because it was one of those "never need to make a backup disk of your OS again" piece of cardboard that comes in the package. Should never have believed Dell.....what was I thinking.... anyway.. So, I found another windows xp os disc, put it in, got it loaded, got everything working. Of course, windows recognized that this was not an authorized version, as the os had been installed in another computer that was getting updates, yadda yadda. No sweat, needed to get me an update anyway, so decided I might just buy a leftover Vista Business complete (not an update) and start fresh. Well first, I hate Vista, but that's another story. Anyway, loaded Vista Business as a fresh install, works great. Rebooted it after the windows updated itself, and presto chango, the hard drive is not recognized at all, no way, no how. I've tried booting from cd, but it just doesn't matter if it can't read the hard drive. It keeps coming up with that issue. What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance!

A:Hard drive doesn't show up in BIOS

The most common cause of a hard drive not showing is that the cable is loose. Disconnect the data cable and reconnect it, making sure that it is fully plugged in. Test.

You may, also, have disabled the drive controller(s) in the BIOS setup. Enter setup and select "Load Defaults", save and exit. Test again.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book 3.0. Earlier today, I connected my external hard drive to my computer, and it showed up without any issues. After I safely removed it, I stored it away. When I took it back out, the end of the USB cable that is attached to the hard drive, not the end that goes into the computer, came out of the hard drive. If you look at the picture in the following link, you'll see what I mean. It's the part that says "SS" in this picture:

That little vertical rectangle-like piece came out with the wire, and it was attached to the end of the wire. I put it back into the port, but now I can't access anything on my hard drive. I can still turn my hard drive back on. I just can't get any computer to access it. I'm guessing something got messed up in the connection.

All my data should still be on the external hard drive. Is there any way that I could retrieve the data?

A:External hard drive won't show on computer

Yes, that connection on the external hdd is pretty much worthless. here are some thoughts...

1. get really small pliers or paperclips and attempt to remove the plastic "chunks" in the port.
2. attempt to RMA the drive, see if WD will cover broken USB3.0 ports as part of the warranty.
3. if all else fails, disassemble the external enclosure, remove the hard drive & hook it up as an internal hdd in your PC.

Hope this helps, take care!

I have a Simpletech 250GB external hard drive that wont show up on my laptop. It works on my Dell. I am getting this error message when looking at Device Manager.

Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)
Anyone else have this problem?
