Windows Index Service help

Q: Windows Index Service help

Hey,

I've been wondering whether or not if I should re-enable the Index service in Windows. I usually always disable it since I do know it can kill some system resource and blast the processor to the point where you can't do anything for a couple minutes or so.

But then now since I have 500 gigs of data and I'm probably expecting to upgrade to 4 TB, is it worth it to have the indexing service running? I've had some issues where I'm trying to open up an archive file and it takes about a minute or two to even open up the archive file. During that time, there's a lot of hard drive activity occurring.

I do actually want to know if the index service only indexes files so when you actually do a search in Windows Explorer, it only finds those files you searched for. Or does it also index files on the hard drive so Windows can access them faster?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Windows Index Service help

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hmm, don't know about that one. Maybe if I had a crappy processor.
I would always just keep indexing on, unless I'm using a system that is installed on a SSD, then I disable it.
Could always read up on this.

Hello Klar,

If you mean that you deleted the Windows Search service, then you can use the tutorial below to restore it.

If not, then could you please provide more details on exactly what you did?

Hope this helps,

Does anyone know how to move a catalog that has already been created from one machine to another? I really only need to be able to "import" the catalog into the indexing service of another machine.

What I have is a portable drive whose contents I would like to index. I would have the index catalog stored on the portable drive. I would then like to "import" the catalog into a machine other than the one I used to create the index so that it is searchable.

I don't really care how the catalog is moved around. I just want to be able to search the index on a machine other than the one used to create it.

Well, maybe somebody can provide some "Elucidation" (meaning "shedding some light") on this strange delay that I am noticing with the Windows Search Indexing Service.

I would never have noticed this except for the Windows Search Index gadget available at Windows Live Gallery.
I think this is a really great useful gadget - It shows you if the Index Service is currently running - it also shows you exactly how many items have been indexed so far, and it also lets you turn the Windows Search Service on or off whenever you want.

Well, the Windows Indexing Service never starts running right away after starting Windows (the gadget tells you this) - there is always about a 3 minute delay after booting until the service really starts to run. So I did some double checking - ran "Services" from "Administrative Tools" in the Control Panel, found the Search Service, selected it, right clicked on it, selected properties, then "Startup Type", and made sure it was Automatic and not a "Delayed Automatic".

So I had thought the Windows Search service would start right away after booting into Windows. But it doesn't, on my rig at least. It ALWAYS takes about 3 minutes for the Search Service to actually start.

Very strange - I've looked around on the internet for more info on this but have found zip

So whats going on ???? Somebody must have an idea.

A:Strange Delay in the Search Index Service

I think that it's just related to how long it takes your machine to boot up. Faster machines will go through the boot up then slower and thus might be able to search faster.

By boot up, I don't mean power button to desktop only. There are also background services that have to run and probably take priority over the search index.

Just my thoughts

It tells me that certain things were installed after the installation of this programme and that certain things may not work properly if I remove it. So can I remove this and if not, what does this programme do that's beneficial ?

Hiyas
After upgrading, I ram WEI. Processor os 5.9, Graphics 5.9, gaming graphics 5.9, hard disk 5.8 (raid sys), memory 5.0
I am using 5-5-5-15 DDR2 mem, 2x1Gb sticks in slots 2 and4. Mobo is a BFG 680i SLI.
Previously when I ran th esame test on the old rig, I was getting 5.9 easily for mem. So, what the hell is going on? It seems a very low rating for what it is. I am not sure if it is a windows thing, or a hardware thing- it is possible a more recent BIOS would make a difference, but I have been unable to locate ANY BIOS updates- BFG pages lead to dead links, as do pretty much every other lead.
Any ideas anyone?

Hello, I have been having problems with Windows 7 explorer constantly crashing and restarting whenever I right-click on or open any files and folders, search in the Start Menu search box, opening My Computer, Control Panel, etc. In essence, it is limiting most of the interface. I was able to pinpoint the problem using Safe Mode and msconfig to the 'Power' service (C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe ?k DcomLaunch). And once I disabled the 'Power' service, everything seems to be fixed.

However, disabling the 'Power' service will disable audio service for the system. To fix the audio service, I tried changing the Power management, reverting back to previous restore points, updating the audio device drivers, trying to enable the Windows services in services.msc for 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)', 'Plug and Play', 'Multimedia Class Scheduler', 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' and 'Windows Audio' to activate sound again, but 'Window Audio' depends on 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder', but 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' seems to depends on the 'Power' service. And I can?t activate the ?Power? service again without crashing Windows explorer. How do I go about fixing this issue? Can I replace the ?Power? service files? Or update them? And help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey all,
I am having an issue with a user connected to our local domain. Whenever they try to log in, it keeps displaying "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service." I have tried multiple ways of addressing it and have
had no luck with a fix for this. I have tried:

Using 'netsh winsock reset'Uninstall and reinstall network adapter driversClean booting and trying to isolate the issue (did not find anything)
Deleting the font cache Tinkering with the service settings Disabling anti-virus and restarting
System Restore
None of these are fixing the issue for my particular system. It always comes back. The hardest part about troubleshooting this issue is how sporadic it is. It happens every other time the user logs in.

The only other fix I have not tried the hotfix they released for this yet. I don't want to install this until I have exhausted all of my options as this could create more problems.
We have 50+ other computers running Windows 7 on this domain with absolutely 0 issues. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

When the user tries to login into their laptop whether cabled into our domain network or not, they receive a message "there are currently no logon servers available to service this request".  but if cabled into the network and they wait 5 minutes, they
are able to sign in without issue but it takes 2 to 3 minutes to load the page.  I signed into the laptop with my domain admin account and received the same message as the user, but when we tried cabled in (5 minutes later), i was able to sign in without
issue.  The troubleshooting steps:
1.  Updated the network driver today (still receiving same result)
2.  Re-added the computer to the domain today (still receiving same result)
3.  the event viewer is showing the 5719 NETLOGON message and also 1129 (but the user has been receiving this for a number of months)
4.  The only thing we haven't tried is creating a new user profile but the only reason I don't see that working is because if its happening with my domain admin account it can't be a profile issue.

Any ideas of what could be causing this and is there a fix for it?  I do see there is a hotfix but wasn't sure if we should run it or not.

Hi, Try the following. First of all, use another PC to create a bootable Windows 10 DVD or USB Flash Drive via the following link.  Under the section 'Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO', download the Media Creation Tool. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once you have this, run the tool, select 'Create installation media for another PC', then select the language, edition of Windows 10, and 64bit. Follow the rest of the prompts to create this and then click Finish when completed. Insert the Windows 10 Installation Media and Shutdown the notebook by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ). Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM (uefi) or USB Flash Driver ( uefi ) option, depending on which type of media you created, then hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so. Boot to the Advanced Start-up Options Menu - see Option 5 on the link below for details on accessing this. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html#option5 Then try running Windows System Restore to return the notebook to a point in time before this issue occurred - See Option 1 on the link below for details on this procedure. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4588-system-restore-windows-10-a.html Regards, DP-... But I have been told this doesn't work in WIndows 7.

I think that a repair install (upgrade) would be your best bet. In lieu of that approach, just reinstall, again. This should not be a problem, since you have just reinstalled.

My best advice, however, after you are up and running, have programs installed and activate, make a system image and put it in a safe place. In that way you will never have to come here again, with a similar problem.

Welcome to TSF....

First thing there is no program that is worth its salt to make your computer run faster reliably. There are programs that aspire to do this but are not worth spending the money on. RELEVANCY SCORE 39.6

Hi,

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on my desktop, but i can update my Performance index. When Vista was first installed, it ran a performance test, but the video card driver was not installed so it got a 1.0. Well after i installed the video card driver the computer tells me that New HardWare Dected and it wants me to refresh my score. Well it runs the test, screen blacks out once or twice like it should, and when the test is over, nothing happens. The rating does not change and i still get the new hardware thing. This never happened to me when i was using home basic.
Ps i have also upgraded my ram from 1gb to 2gb high performace :) and that score wont change either.

Thanks,
Vrekk

Who cares, the performance index doesn't mean anything anyway.

it went down from 5.8 to 5.6 and i need to know why

A:windows experience index went down

Hello xbabeoo,

This depends on which hardware subscore dropped.

Most likely, it's due to an updated driver for that item (ex: graphics). Drivers can cause the WEI score for that item to go up and down a tiny bit since the drivers can affect their performance.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

After I installed Vista 64 bit with 2x1gb of rams, the Window Experience Index was 5.7 which is determined the lowest factor, in this case, the computing speed. The question is why I later installed another 2x1gb rams which makes the total of 4gb would dropped the index to 5.6? More ram = slow????

A:What's up with the Windows Experience index!

Many systems relax memory timings in order to run with 4-sticks. This is very common of Intel chipset motherboards.

Moreover, memory will run at the speed of your slowest memory. You might want to download and run CPU-Z and have a look at the memory timings for all four slots on it's memory tab. This will tell you what SPD rating your sticks are and if you're now running at higher latency/slower speeds since adding the two new sticks.

Hello
At the conclusion of Windows Experience it produces A report and you can print it but there is no option for saving it
What I would like to do is have is a short cut to access the report or a way of saving it
After running the index the logs are stored at Windows\performance\winsat\data store\
but there is no report there
The same sort of thing applies to the administrative logs in Event Viewer this log is a summary of the critical and error reports generated by the other logs which are stored at windows\system32\winevt\logs but again no reportis there it would also be nice to have a shortcut for administrative log
can anyone help

You can't save it as a file anywhere, but you can access it again from the System screen in the Control Panel, then click on Windows Experience Index, then 'View and print detailed...' under your score.

Brand new pc, Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit os.
After full installation, I got WEI index as follows
Cpu - 6.3
Ram - 6.3
Graphics - 3.6
Games etc- 5.4
Disk - 5.9
Overall index 3.6, which seems rather low. Is there anything to raise index to something like 5.3.Any help will be appreciated.

I've tried to Google; but had no luck.

Can (will) a 64-bit processor being tested by the 64-bit version of Vista score higher than the same processor being tested by the 32-bit version of Vista?

A:Windows Experience Index - x64 vs. x32

Hello Rob,

A 64-bit CPU should score higher under the WEI CPU section while running a 64-bit Vista vs a 32-bit Vista.

I have GTX 260 and Windows 7 home 64 b, and Windows Experience Index is just 2.0.
It's because of Gaming graphics is 2.0.
All other indexes:
Processor 7.5
Memory 7.5
Graphics 5.9
Primary hard disk 5.9

Anyone have an idea why Gaming graphics is so low?
How to increase this index to any higher value?

P.S.
Also have some problems with PC. Here is the tread's link:
