Web URL's in programs only open browser to the default start page

Q: Web URL's in programs only open browser to the default start page

I don't use IE, I use Opera portable
It was not registered as the default browser which it is now,
Clinking on web links within applications (help & support links for example) opens the browser ok, but only to my start page, not to the intended web page.
Also, when I click on a HTML file, it does the same thing. Opens the browser to the start page, not the file.

It's not recognizing the link or the file.

I went through the URL Associations etc. in the registry and they all point to Opera. Protocols point to Opera also. I was successful the 1st time I tried this, but I don't remember exactly how that was different that this time. (I had to load a recent backup image for other unrelated problems left over from a bloated program I couldn't clean out).

Any ideas??

Preferred Solution: Web URL's in programs only open browser to the default start page

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There are multiple pop-ups on my browser.

In addition to that, there are other pop-ups on the side/top/bottom of the site.

Besides that, my computer is getting laggy. Do you have any suggestion to solve this?

My default page will be mystartsearch.com although I have changed it to www.google.com

The virus is most probably due to the following 3 programmes:

Before now links from programs (Steam, Greenshot, Skype, desktop, start menu, etc) would open in my default browser or sometimes Internet explorer. But after a whole slew of things including updates, switching to and back from IE as my default browser as well as Firefox, and uninstalling and reinstalling Google Chrome this is no longer the case. When I click a link in a program it thinks for a second and acts as if it's about to open but then ultimately does nothing.

Hello, does anyone know if it's possible (and how) to reset recently open programs from start menu to default settings? When you make a clean install of Windows the first program is "Getting Started", then "Windows Media Center", "Snipping Tools", etc.

Thank you for your help!

I recently installed free version of GIMP Photo Program to try it and I actually haven't done more than open it once. I mention this because it's the only recent change I've made as far as photo programs go.

I went to open one of my screenshots and it opened with GIMP, which I don't want. I went to Start/Default Programs so I could set the default to one of my other options. Those options would be IrfanView, Photoshop, Windows Photo Gallry, Fastone Image Viewer, Paint or Paint.NET or this GIMP.

The only options which show up under Start/Default Programs/Det Default Programs are IrfanView and Windows Photo Gallery. Why don't the other photo programs to appear there?

Hi, I'm running Windows 8.1 and think I have run into the same issue this person has, though I'm finding some of the processes he has gone through to fix it quite difficult to understand.

Though, I'm not sure how I can solve this issue under my circumstances- any help would be appreciated. I am quite a novice when it comes to issues like this but I should be capable of fixing it under instruction.

My Anti-Virus has picked up a program which has removed the default page in question from my Chrome. However, when I open Internet Explorer, that page- "http://www.istartsurf.com/?type=sc&...t&uid=ST1000DM003-1CH162_Z1D7ES0BXXXXZ1D7ES0B" opens and I have done everything I can to remove it. I've went into the Internet settings and removed it from default pages, etc and changed my homepage, but the page still persists. I believe I have also removed any relevant suspect programs from 'add or remove programs' but the problem page still persists.

Again, the antivirus seems to have removed all trace of 'iStartSurf' from my Google Chrome. I do not use Internet Explorer but these kinds of issues make me quite paranoid- any help would be greatly appreciated. Just whatever I do, Internet Explorer opens with that iStartSurf page.

Hey texnpa,

Welcome to 7 Forums!

You probably want to run this program in compatibility mode. Find the .exe program file (C:\Program Files\...)
Then you will want to right click, and choose compatibility tab.
Then you can choose to run as Windows XP.

Follow this tutorial if you need any further help or guidance: Compatibility Mode

I have a web site that I plan to put onto CD, i.e. use it locally. The site uses activeX controls hence it is no good for me to use Firefox (as far as I know there are no activeX controls for firefox). However since Firefox is my default browser, I was wondering if there was a coding way (C++, JavaScript, anything) to open this particular web page in IE.

I've been attempting to write C++ code to do this. So far I can open IE with:

system("\"\"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe\"\"");

I believe ShellExecute can be used to open web pages via the Default Browser (I haven't found any tags where I can choose a browser).

Anyone have a clue?

Hello
I found out lately that my default browser process keeps opening up even when I close it with task manager.the process opens a few seconds after but doesn't open the application.I have Comodo firewall and I would like to know how to trace what opens that process ,so that I could delete this dll or exe or whatever!.
In the meantime,I made IE7 my default browser and I use firefox to browse. I noticed that this way the IE7 process doesn't use more memory and stays at 4888k.Maybe It cannot do what it is suppose to do because I don't use the default browser.
I changed my default to firefox and noticed that now,It's firefox process that opens.
I ran a virus scan with AVAST and no luck.It didn't find any virusses.I also ran a scan with Spy Sweeper without any luck.I am trying to upgrade the defenitions of ADaware, but it seems that there is an error all the time.
If anybody has an idea on what to do,please tell me
Thanks

Install the program, then run it. Choose the option to Scan and Save log file. When the scan is done, the log file will be opened in Notepad. Select all and paste into a new post in the Malware forum along with a description of the problem, especially any symptoms in addition to the browser process starting by itself and being unable to update Ad-aware, ie, popups, websites you can't get to, hard drive activity, etc

Hi All,
Finally decided to install Chrome but are having problems setting it as default browser. Installed it ok and set Control Panel defaults to Chrome but nothing happens. When I click the IE tab it defaults to Google.com and the old steam Google pops up. I can click the Chrome icon on my desktop and open Chrome and use it no worries.
Unfortunately it does not tell you the URL for Google chrome otherwise I would manually type it in the IE Shortcut Target box.
I am obviously missing something because I have followed all installation instructions to the letter, bin there, done that, but cannot get Chrome to open when I click my IE Shortcut.
I am running IE11 Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

If you go to the start page, click on mail, open an email, and click on "Print", a panel appears on the right side of the screen. The only device in the panel is the Document Writer. The default printer is not shown. There is a "more" link which, when clicked, adds the default printer to the list of target devices.

Not a big deal (at least to me, but I'm not the only person in the house using the windows 8 computer) since it's just an extra click (on "more"), but is there any way to change this behavior, so that the default printer is shown rather than the document writer?

Somehow I set all my .exe programs to oepn with iTunes. I've installed iTunes but still have to manually reset all the programs. I cannot system restore because that program isn't correctly linked either. I found a helpful solution here but I'm lost along the way and am not sure what to do once I have the regfix file downloaded to the desktop.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think a problem is I cannot MERGE because it's saved as a .txt file and opens with Notepad. I cannot use regedit because it's not associated with the correct file and I also cannot use cmd prompt.

A:All .exe programs set to default open with iTunes.. need to reset

You download it by right clicking and then "Save target as" or "Save link as", saving it, launching it and then clicking "Yes" or "Accept" if any dialogs should appear.

Using FF 22 as default, but several programs I use (if not all), open IE nevertheless.
My e mail program The Bat! is one of them, they say their program just looks at the default browser.
Should I change registry keys?
Is it a good idea to remove IE altogether?

I'm not sure if this is possible, but I thought I'd see if someone knows how to do it.

I have Firefox set as my default browser, and I am running WinXP Pro, SP2. My campus webmail is MS Outlook Web, and it does not display properly in firefox. I have a shortcut on my desktop for my webmail. Is there a way that it opens in IE, even though IE is not the default browser. There is no "Open With" options for internet shortcuts. If there isn't a way through Windows, I was thinking it may be possible with a VBscript or something.

Thanks in advance if anyone can let me know how to to this, or let me know if it isn't possible.

With apologies if I've posted in the wrong section, here is my story (I have Windows 7 Home Ed.):

The best way to save photos sent as attachments in Outlook 2007 has been to choose "Other Actions" from the top of the Message Box, and then "View in Browser" (followed by a right-click on the photo, leading to the save function). This has been working fine for me until today...

When I tried, the message opened in my "Opera" browser, which was weird, since I've selected "Chrome" as my default. Worse, the photo did not show, so I went about seeing how I may open my e-mails in a different browser.

Experience from the past has taught me "Firefox" is pretty hardy with related matters, and I thought giving Firefox a go would not be a a bad idea; but I decided on choosing "Internet Explorer" (which I never use) as my default for a quick test. (What harm could it do? I thought. I could always choose another browser as a default. Right...?)

At the test's conclusion, the photo did not show in IE either, which made me even more determined to try Firefox. However, after choosing Firefox as my default, the Outlook messages are still opening in Internet Explorer.

Looking around as to what I might do, the best clue was provided by this page (although it addresses a different problem), and aside from more troubling solutions such as reinstalling Firefox (I'd rather avoid doing that) and fooling around with the registry (which I'm afraid of doing) what gave m... What? Did I frighten our experts away, with my question?

Today I plugged in a new Seagate portable drive, and among the junk that was included was something called "Setup"; I was curious what could possibly need to be set up with a plug and play device, and when I clicked on it... Internet Explorer opened.

The question simply becomes this: For the moment, I am preferring Chrome to be the default browser, so is there a way for Chrome to overcome Internet Explorer with an action that calls for the default browser to open? (My previous example was Outlook, where Internet Explorer is still opening when I click on "View in Browser.")

Looking around, I keep running into pages where folks have the reverse problem, preferring IE to Chrome, but Chrome keeps butting in. This page gave the idea to go to "Internet Options" (Programs tab) to make sure whether a browser is set as the default (the browser being IE, which is not my purpose), because even if you set a browser as the default within a browser, apparently sometimes it does not register. Maintaining the idea, this page suggested traveling to "Set your default programs" in Control Panel, to make sure the program you want is indeed selected. To make sure, I picked Chrome... listed as having all of its defaults.

Internet Explorer, I noticed, had 6 out of 14 defaults. I next went to "Set Associations" from Control Panel, and scrolled down the list to see where IE was in charge. (This gave me the opportun... Read more

Hello,

On the internet, I have found tutorials on how to unassociate a file extension from a default Open With program. You have to run RegEdit and remove the desired registry keys.
I'm following these steps correctly, but it just does not seem to work.

I have a file extension called ".pkg" (package). It orginally had no default program bound to it. I accidentily gave it WinRAR as default (and the only) Open With program. Now I want it to have no associated program again. (blank icon, without ANY default program to open it with)
When I try to delete the WinRAR registry key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.pkg\OpenWithList, WinRAR still is the default Open With program and when I click on the file, it opens with WinRAR..
They also tell me to search for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pkg\OpenWithProgids, but there is no OpenWithProgids in the .pkg folder inside HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

Could anyone help me with this? .pkg is not the only extension which I want to have blank again. (With blank I actually mean having NO default programs to open it with. Not showing up in Open With, nor the icon itself, nor when simply clicking on it.
When you click on such a "blank" file, it normally says "Cannot open the following file" and then it asks you to either search the right program on the internet or find a default program to open it with. This was the original state of the .pkg file and I'd like to have it back like this,... Read more

When clicked from two different locations (the Task Bar and the Desktop), icons that have legitimate URLs will not automatically open and display in the default Firefox browser. To test, I have changed the default browser to IE, but the same thing happens, nothing: there is a momentary hourglass appearance but no webpage is displayed. Firefox is listed as the Default Browser for all other extensions (.com, .htm, .html. etc.), yet no webpage appears when links are clicked outside of the browser itself.

Links do appear as webpages if they are 1) copy and pasted into the browser's address bar or 2) clicked within the browser.

Since this has previously worked successfully, I surely did something wrong. Woe is me. Where to start...?

A:Clicking on Links Does Not Automatically Open Default Browser

Go into default programs and double check. Then go into firefoxes setting and check it is the default program. The try opening it again. If that doesnt work consider trying with a new link. Or go into windows explorer and write google in the top bar. This should also open the default program as a check

Hi!

Today, I present to you SearchWithMyBrowser, a little tool to open your Cortana searches in your default browser. Since April 28th, Cortana opens Edge, to force Bing upon you.

SearchWithMyBrowser fixes this. It redirects searches to your default browser. If you have anything that redirected searches to another search engine, it will still work.

Installation
First, you need to download the app. If you have git installed, you can also
Code:
git clone https://github.com/charlesmilette/SearchWithMyBrowser.git
No binaries are included. But don't worry! Making them will only take an Internet connection and 30 seconds. Two things that you should have if you are reading this.

Simply double-click on
Code:
make.cmd
If everything goes well, your directory structure should change from

Code:
.gitignore
install.cmd
LICENSE
make.cmd
README.md
SearchWithMyBrowser.cs
to

Code:
Microsoft.Net.Compiler.1.2.1/
.gitignore
install.cmd
LICENSE
make.cmd
nuget.exe
README.md
SearchWithMyBrowser.cs
SearchWithMyBrowser.exe
SearchWithMyBrowser.pdb
To install, simply double-click on
Code:
install.cmd
It should pop-up an UAC. After you approve it, it should ask you to move the file to a permanent location (it'll stay there until you remove SearchWithMyBrowser) and paste it's location without quotes.

After doing that, it should write a little message and ask to press a key. After doing so, the file association dialog should open and ask you to choose between Edge and ... Read more

It seems my system got infected by some worm which installed b.exe (as well as a.exe, c.exe, d.exe, e.exe & f.exe for that matter).

My AVG 8.5 was constantly alerting me of various cookies and infections which I vaulted and removed. I managed to remove the b.exe, etc. by running VISTA (Ultimate version) safe mode and changing attribute and deleting files. Any alerts regarding cookies and infections have stopped since then. I ran a AVG full scan later and it shows system as fully clean now.

However I still have the issue that even though I have Firefox as default browser every time I start Windows ie is starting (full size blank screen which also sets itself as default browser). I manage to kill the ie process from task manager as well ieuser.exe [if it shows up as running process].

My questions:

How do I get rid of the ie automatic start and changing browser default?
Are there any further cause of concern or am I just dealing with leftover annoyances?
How do I remove any remnants of the virus/trojan/malware?
Should I be concerned about my Firefox & Firefox password add-on utility security issues? (As the malware seems to be mainly ie related)

Thanks in advance

I have a LAN connection through ATT. and have not been able to connect to the internet with 2 desk top machines that I have , I do not have any problem connecting with a lop top. The only difference is that the desk tops were once on dial-up. Could something be disabled and preventing the page opening? I was on the phone with an att tech for over an hour last night to no avail. We went through a series of command prompts associated with the ip address.
A connection is shown in the systray at the bottom of the screen but the page will not open. The error is: Internet Explorer could not open this page. Any help would be appreaciated

A:IE browser will not open the page

Some persons use the terms "LAN" and "NIC" interchangeably when referrring to a device which allows for connection to the Internet and (also) functioning as part of a network.Sooo...first question is...do you have a home network setup? Are you using a router to connect your computers to this Internet cable connection provided by ATT?Are the connection settings on each of the systems...the same? To see the connection settings, right-click on the connection, select Properties.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/n...onnections.mspxLouisDialup setups (at any time) have nothing to do with how cable/DSL/broadband setups function. Are you saying that you cannot open any webpage?

I had XP Antivirus 2012 on my computer initially, and was able to fix it by following directions. However, then another "Security Protection" virus got onto the computer. I followed all directions from the bleepingcomputer.com tutorial, but it still did not fix the problem. When I start the computer and it loads normally lots and lots of blank windows pop up repeatedly on the desktop. Whenever I try to start any program an error message pops up saying that some part of a file is missing, no matter what program I try to open.
