Yoga 710-151KB broken hinge

Q: Yoga 710-151KB broken hinge

I've seen many of the posts describing what has recently happened to my 15 month old 710-151KB, the right hand hinge breaking when I closed the laptop, cracking the right corner of the screen. It would appear to be a manufactoring/design defect. I've had laptops for years and depend on them for my business and customer contact. I don't abuse any of my equipment and simply closing the laptop in the usual manner should not break a hinge. I am mechanically minded and certainly would have noticed warning signs of a pending break, but nothing in this case. My action to date has been to return to the retailor who advised that as the warranty had expired they could do the repair but at my cost. The retailor was most unhelpful. As my business depends on customer communication I could not be without some form of computer for the week or two it would take for any repair to take place. I purchased a replacement laptop at another retailor. That retailor advised that it would take a couple of weeks to replace the hinge and screen with the cost (including labor) exceeding the value of the laptop. Question: Has Lenovo stepped up to the plate for repairs, replacement or compensation? It was a great laptop while it lasted but 15 months is a rather short life for a babied laptop!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The hinge on my Yoga 2 13 is broken and the monitor and the computer have become completely detached.  Any recommendations on how to proceed? I'd like to at least access the hard drive but have had difficulty in using it as an external drive.  I've purchased the converter that some have recommended but the drive simply doesn't show up when I connect it to another laptop.

I just bought my new lenovo yoga 730 last month. After less than a month suddenly the left hinge of the screen is broken and now the screen is crooked and does not close well. I have seen here that Lenovo are aware of this problem and opened a case for this issue and offer a repair but lenovo in Israel do not want to fix my laptop because it was bought in the United States and not in Israel. What should I do?

Hello everyone, I'm reading that others have this problem and it has resulted in a broken screen. The left side of the right hinge on my yoga is not connected like it is on the other hinge. Is this a defect or part of the design? I contacted lenovo to see if I could get a replacement before my screen shatters but they said I can only repair it. Unfortunately I need a laptop everyday for school and work so I can't afford to wait 10 business days for it to be repaired. On my yoga before this one, I had three dead pixels and they sent a replacement right away, then I sent the broken one in. Sadly they have told me they won't do this for me again, even if this is a manufactured defect. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm wondering what the best course of action is since lenovo refuses to accomodate to my circumstance.

Hi, I have a Yoga 710 with a broken hinge.  The laptop has only be used in my house and has never been dropped. At the moment the left side hinge is stuck in "normal open mode". I can not open it further nor close the laptop. and the glass over the hinge is cracked. The laptop is still under warranty. I have contacted Lenovo service center for this an although it is clearly a production error it seems Lenovo is not honoring its warranty obligations. They claim it is accidental damage.Does anyone have the same experience with the yoga hinges?andDoes anyone have any advice on how to convince Lenovo to repair this under warranty? Kind regards

Bought my lenovo yoga 720 13inch from my dads friend about 6 months ago. He used the laptop for a few months and left it with my dad when he left the country. I used the laptop for a while just to check it out and fell in love with it. So i asked my dad if he could buy it from him, he agreed but his friend sold it barely below the original price as it was'nt used much. 6 months in, i'm enjoying everything about this laptop and suddenly the right hinge breaks and cracks half of the screen. I was absolutely devastated as i had no warranty and repairing it would be expensive. With much effort i convinced my dad to send it for repairs and was able to use for another month before it broke again. Money gone down the drain. After a bit of research i found out that many people had the same problem, i just feel so cheated. I'm about to go into university with no laptop and i'm doing an IT degree. My dad won't fund me as he's already paid so much for the laptop, I might have to start part time work now just to get money for a new laptop. No words can explain how dissapointed i am at lenovo as this isn't a problem caused by the customer, rather a fault with the companies engineering (you can't tell me thousands of people who've experienced the same problem are the cause of it). It's a shame because I loved everything about this laptop and believed it was worth every penny. I feel worse for my dad who has to see his hard earned money go down the drain. heres a pic of the b... Read more

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 730 15" Laptop a couple months ago. I have never misused or mishandled it but tonight when switching from tablet mode to regular mode, there was a problem with the right hinge. Part of the right hinge popped off and now it seems that the screen (the glass part) is coming apart from the back of the laptop, especially when closing the computer. I don't know what to do as I am worried that further damage may occur to the computer/screen and this is a great concern as I have had it for such a short period of time. I am unsure as to what caused it to break as I was handling it quite normally but I think there may have been a problem with the hinge when it was manufactured as it was a little loose before it popped off. Thank you in advance for any help.

Tonight I was attempting to reseat my laptop's hard drive and must have exerted too much force when attempting to close it back up because on the righthand side the hinge broke off of the roll cage. It looks like that not only am I going to have to replace the hard drive but now I'm going to have to figure out how to fix the hinge. Does anyone know how to fix this? It looks like I'm going to have to buy a whole new palmrest assembly because that's what the hinges attach to (the metal-roll cage underneath the motherboard, gpu, etc). Is it possible to just buy the roll cage by itself? I can't find any replacement palmrest assembly for the yoga 500 15isk, only for the yoga 500 15ibd. Would the 15ibd palmrest assembly work? Not sure if it would even be worth fixing at this point. Maybe I should buy a new laptop.  Any help would be appreciated.

The symptoms:One day when you've opened or closed the lid as you would with normal use, you here a pop and notice that the screen has separated from the lid body in one of the corners near the hinge (the screen glass may or may develop a crack a that point). If you chose to do nothing though, this problem will only get worse and, eventually, the screen glass will crack.  The problem:The root cause of the problem is the use of glue/adhesive applied by the manufacturer to keep hinge assembly attached to lid body. After a while the glue fails to hold the hinge in place and it separates from the lid. When that happens (with a pop), the hinge mounting plate (made of steel) is now moving freely between the screen and the lid so when you try to move the lid, it's pushing against the back of the screen causing screen glass to bend outward. This applies to ALL Lenovo Yoga series notebooks as their hinge design is the same and Lenovo is aware of it... but choses to do nothing. Support:Given that Lenovo designed this hinge and chose the materials and methods to assemble it, you would think that it would take the responsibility for it failing to last passed warranty. Unfortunately, no such luck. When you call support, you get nothing but denial and blame for mishandling their state-of-the-art product and causing it to fail. So you end up with a total disappointment on your hands and a bitter taste of unfairness. Repair:The hinge can be repaire... Read more

The screen and hinge has been working fine till couple of days ago, when I lift the screen, I found the lower right corner of the screen glass was cracking and broken into small pieces and the right side hinge is loose. After removing the broken glass at the corner area I found the hinge mount assembly behind the glass was loose and popping out due to failed glue. It is obvious a design or manufacturing issue. In order to hold the heavy screen up in position, the hinges must be made very tight and the hinge mount should be attached to the notebook metal cover with screws instead of very small area of glue. I called Lenovo help center but was told there is no recall for this isse and it was out of warranty. I resecured the hinge mount to the metal notebook cover and the display works fine but the right side area (1/3) of the screen lost the touch sencitive function. At first, I thought the glass was broken by something hitting the glass from outside or dropping, but in fact is was broken by hitting the hinge behind the glass when you open the notebook.

Purchased my laptop from Amazon seller about a year ago. Black horizontal line started to show up about 6 months ago. It is only getting worse. This gets really annoying as the line is almost quarter of an inch down the screen and stretches across the whole screen now. Wondering if this can be fixed and if Lenovo offers any repairs? Wouldn't expect such issue to happen to a brand new laptop, and I understand I'm in a situation where I bought this laptop from Amazon that I don't have anywhere to go. This issue seems to be design flaw/defect from manufacturer and not misuse by the buyer. Please advise

It states I have the most up to date driver and that the driver is working properly.4) I disabled and then reenabled the driver and nothing.5) I installed ?driver easy? and scanned drivers. It states I have the most updated driver and that it is working fine. Touchscreen still not working. Everything else seems to be functioning fine. ie keyboard, keypad etc.

I really don't expect to get any help with this because I have had this issue with previous HP laptops and no help forthcoming because the laptop is out of warranty. But I would like others to be aware of the broken hinge issues with these laptops. HP has thousands of complaints but does nothing to improve the quality of their product. So here is a 4 year old laptop which cost over $1200 going down the drain because the plastic holding the screws have broken. I had the same problem with another laptop and was told it would cost 600 to fix. Very disappointed with HP products in general. It's a design issue that HP takes no resposiility to fix and just expects us to cough up the money to fix or buy a new laptop. Sorry, but I can't afford to keep paying for their issues. Either fix the problem or expect consumers to go elsewhere for their products. That's the only option I have left. I have used HP printers and laptops and desktops for over 20 years and have steadily seen the quality decrease. Sorry to see a big company not care about its customers.

I have had this laptop for over a year and the right hinge is now broken.  I have not dropped or done anything that might cause this to happen.  I have read this is a common problem and some people were getting fixed for free??  Just wondering if that was in or out of warrenty and does anyone have any suggestions??

My 16month old laptop now has a broken left hand hinge. It has not been knocked or damaged in any way. Reading the forum this is obviously a known design fault. Is there a recall from HP to replace this free of charge? Thanks Brian

Hello,  I too have had the hinge on my Envy suddenly crack open. No falls, drops, or damage. Everything works fine except for this hinge that just bulged out. What worries me is that this seems to be a popular problem, yet no recall has been made to fix it that I am aware of, and now that my Envy is more than a year old. I will be have to pay for a repair that seems to be somehow common. I would LOVE to hear that HP is standing behind their product and making things right with their customers??? Thanks for your consideration. From a Btech Computer science student.HP Envy m6 Also please make sure that this problem doesn't repeat in new laptops. I told my friends and they are refraining from hp due to this problem in many laptops; hp doesn't design the frames well
