I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HULU? lol

yes I think that that would stream in HD but I would suggest at least 8 Mega Bits per second down stream internet for HD streaming, else you will end up buffering every 10 seconds. If you can't get 8megs, 4 megs will run but you may have to buffer after every break.

My laptop has S Video output. My TV has S Video input. I want to play a movie that's on my laptop's hard drive. I plugged the cord into my laptop and into my TV but nothing happens. The movie shows up on the laptop but not the TV.

(I thought it would be easy, since my DVD player was plugged into the TV's S Video. I figured I'd unplug the DVD player and plug that right into my laptop. Didn't happen.)

Any tips?

Hi @Noath17bell, Welcome to the HP Forum. I grasp that you downloaded movies onto an USB drive,  when you try to play them , the ones in  MPEG format has both video and audio.but the other formats you get the video but no audio. As this does not appear to be a hardware issue, but a software one please contact Chromebook Help.  HP does not support the Chrome operating system but does support the hardware.  This link may also be useful. HP Chrome OS - Frequently Asked Questions about Your HP Chromebook or Chromebox. Good Luck! To say thanks for helping, please click the "Thumbs Up Icon" below. Hi, can't seem to play/watch a dvd movie(s) using WMP11 at first I thought this was only from a single dvd but I tried some of my previous dvds that works on my WMP11 and all of them now are not working maybe you would ask me if my dvd-writer is not working but it is 100% working. That's why am expecting that my WMP11 is the culprit can anyone help me.

I also tried lowering my screen resolution and color quality settings but have no luck.

BTW I'm using ffdshow as my codecs and eversince I'm using it I've no problem till now. And also I have DVDlab Pro after I compiled my dvd and tried to test it on my WMP11 it failed. I have installed comodo firewall but i don;t know if this has to do with it.

Confused and really need help. Thanks

You mean you've downloaded the FLV file and tried using the 2 players? I've tried both, no issues. What error msg did you get w/ MPC-HC?

I'm using:
MPC-HC ver 1.6.8.7417
VLC ver 2.1.0

I get black bars on top on bottom, but that's expected since my display is 16:10, whereas the movie is 16:9. No borders when I played the file on my laptop, which has a 16:9 display.

I've been having some trouble with this for some time, ever since I downloaded a clip from the internet and had trouble with it. I ended up trying several different movie players and got the clip to work, but now my ATI DVD Player no longer plays movies. Whenever I put a DVD in my drive and start ATI DVD Player I now get a message saying it's failed because :

1) Audio Device is in use or not installed.
2) Display overlay is not available.
3) Not enough video memory.

I've been to the ATI website and tried the tips on there but nothing works. I've tried turning off every other background program but still no joy. I have DirectX 8.1 installed, and have just upgraded to the latest Windows Media Player (7.1) which at least works properly again.

I'm using Windows ME, have a Radeon card (the first Radeon I think, very early one, not sure of the name), 256mb RAM, plenty of HD space and no other problems with the computer.

Hi, my grandaughter who is heading to Americorps next month can't view DVD's on her laptop.
She has a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and a few months ago her hard drive crashed. A college friend of hers installed a new hard drive but she lost everything. Trying to help, he installed an illegal XP Pro (this was a bad move & I'm trying to fix this).
Just before her room was broken into, all her Dell discs that came with the laptop were stolen. Dell is no longer able to replace the discs since the laptop is too old. I've managed to help her download most of the drivers and she's now up and running, however she can not play any DVDs. I'v found that she originally had Sonic Cineplayer 3.0. We now get the message that there is no decoder loaded. How can I help her....is there a place where I can download Sonic Cineplayer for free....neither of us have any $$$$$ to buy it.
She's a super 21 year old and plans on spending her life helping others...and she's for real!!

I truly will appreciate any help.
Thank you in advance

I've been trying to play an AVI movie but with no luck, though tried a lot of ways... First I played it in WMP 10 and it said some codec was missing, so it was showing the picture perfectly but with no sound. I installed K-Lite Codec Pack and tried playing it with WMP Classic as directed but it said there was an error and showed horizontal lines on the screen instead of the picture. WMP 10 could not play it either. After I uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pack, WMP 10 would not even show the picture! I decided to try Real Player 10 and it does show the picture, but no sound again. I have never dealt seriously with movies before, so I would appreciate any advice you could give me about this.

This is not a problem with the OS. It's a problem with movies I have downloaded, some of which  won't play, or play without sound. When I try to play them, there's a problem. Either it plays, but without sound, or I get a popup that says I need to get some software to make it work. Many others have worked beautifully. The problem ones are formats using .avi, .flv, and sometimes mp4 extensions, all of which are quite standard. But the .avi ones won't play, even in Windows Media Player (yes, I checked that it will play .avi files). So how can an .avi file NOT play? Unless somebody tampered with the coding of the extension somehow. I'm no expert on such things. Similar things have been done to SOME of the .flv and mp4 movies, too. They all have to have additional software. But none of it appears to be offered at the DivX site. I use mostly DivX and WMP for playing videos. My system is W7. Most of the time, just to GET the downloads, I had to jockey around at the sites - they didn't give the download sites in a truly straightforward manner. Some asked me to "upgrade" Flash, and I rejected that until I went to the Flash site and found my software was entirely up to date. So it seemed obvious the "update" I was being offered was - not lovely. Though the site that gives the list of sites offering a particular movie is not Grade A, its WOT rating is perfect. I DO get what they offer, but it's the sites they direct me to, the ones that have the movies tha... Read more

I'm stumped on this one. I have a clean Win XP Pro on a lab machine and trying to get MPC [media player classic] as the default player for a DVD movie whenever one is inserted. So I set the correct option and choice of player via Win XP's applet, it all looks right, WMP has no defaults set except for .wmv, but I still get nothing.
The system acts like its trying to do the right thing - when DVD movie [this is retail movie] is inserted, the hard drive spins out something and the DVD lights up but no go. Nothing at all. If I open MPC, select the DVD and force it, it plays beautifully.

anyone solve this before? All my software is current... MPC is right up to date, so is XP Pro, everything...

any chance the firewall is blocking this? [ i use win xp default firewall at client level]

Hi, I'm a newbie in this forum.

I've recently bought an NVIDIA FX6600 AGP 8x video card (replacing my old FX5200), and so far, it has satisfied my gaming experience. However, I can no longer play any of my video/movie files on my computer.

When I try to open and play any MPG/MPEG/AVI/etc files, WMP9 won't play these files and the system lags heavily - and when I check the memory usage, WMP9 uses about 99%. There aren't any error messages. So when I want to close WMP9, I have to terminate the prog using ctrl-alt-del.

Sidenote: I can play audio files perfectly, but not video files. And the computer can only play certain video files, for example, it can play the opening movie of "The Sims 2."

I downloaded DivX video codec, hoping that it would solve the problem, but it didn't. So I'm guessing that there's a hardware malfunction.

Specs:
Microsoft Windows XP Prof
Pentium 4 2.67GHz
1024 MB RAM
NVIDIA 6600 AGP 8X (I've recently updated the driver)
DirectX 9.0c

A:dvd videos play but not movies

Yes, optical drives will still work in Safe Mode because they don't rely on third-party drivers, they use generic Microsoft drivers. So if your idea is to test it in Safe Mode then go ahead, and post back with the results.

Had to reload XP. Now I can't play a DVD move - a compatible dvd decoder is not installed.
When I ask for web help, it prompts me to buy a mpeg-2 decoder ( Cineplayer, Corel, Cyberlink, or Nvidia for XP).

Do I need to buy one? Is there a free decoder to download? If I have to buy one, is one better than the other? I don't think any of these were on the pc before I reinstalled.

I'm not very techie, so any help would be appreciated.
