Preferred Solution: Yoga 260 powers up but nothing loads.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The laptop began freezing recently either on the lenovo loading screen or making it through to windows then eventually just freezing on what ever was on the screen. It seems to have worsend since yesterday as now when you power up the fan starts and the keyboard lights up but only for a second then it goes off but the power button is still lit up. The screen remains black the entire time. I've used the battery reset button underneath and tried to start up but the same thing keeps happening. I have no idea what it could be. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Originally my machine (emachines T1840) began powering off at different times immediately following a reboot, and after windows loaded. Best Buy told me it was a bad hard drive and I would need to replace it. They also said that the old drive was fried and no info could be recovered.
The original drive was a 40g Samsung SV4012, and I replaced it with a 40g Samsung SV4002...should work right?
After reformatting, & reloading XP the problem is still there! Machine powers off immediately following reboot, or immediately following windows initial load. The furthest I've made it so far is to the second or third screen on the "welcome to windows XP let's set up your computer, etc." Does anyone have any helpful advice?
Thanks,

Yep. I have no idea why. Came home one day and it was off. Tried to boot it, made it to the Loading Screen, then powered off.

Thought it might be a problem with the power...
BUT it starts up in safe mode fine.

I have tried:
Unplugging all un-necessary devices.
Leaving it off for a while.
Checked for anything suspicious.

AND yes, I tried a system restore a couple times.
BUT, now when I try to do it, all the restore points are GONE.

SO, what's my problem?
Yes, I'm running XP with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

Good Day, We are in the process of refreshing the Yoga's for our staff and today I got a message from a fairly tech-savvy user.  According to her: 'I have noticed since getting my new computer that when I?m on battery power and actively working on my computer that it just randomly shuts down. Sometimes it just looks like sleep mode but others it goes completely off.' This was sent in for assistance and I was wondering if there is a battery update or an issue with one of the MS recent updates.  She is the only one so far having an issue; I hope she ends up being the only one.  The laptops are running Windows 10 LTSB so could it be a way for Microsoft to let us know that there needs to be an update and to sit back and let the update finish? Michael

I have Dell Dimension 2400 with 2G of Crucial Memory. It is running XP Home edition. It had run updates and was powering off but got stuck for over 24 hours without successfully powering down. I did a hard powerdown by holding the power button until it shut off. When I tried to restart the computer it will power on for a second, power off for 2 to 3 seconds and then power on. No image is sent to the monitor and I do not know if Windows is booting. Checking the monitor it says it is in sleep mode and press any key to wake it up. Pressing any key does nothing. Hooking my laptop to the monitor, it works fine. Could it be the video card or a short? Or could it be a virus?

Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Disk Check Outside Windows (Windows XP) The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

I have an Acer Veriton M460, I recently replaced the motherboard on it. plugged everything in and then plugged the power in. It immediately started running. The fan for the processor and power supply started to spin but I never had to push the power button on the front. When I look at the button the light never lit up and when I would push the button it wouldnt do anything. When I held the power button in, it wouldnt shut down the computer. To shut it down I would have to pull the plug. Now whenever it would turn itself on automatically, I never heard any beeps or anything, the fans would just start running. So I disconnected everything that wasnt esential, USB's etc plugged it in, still the same thing, unplugged the power button same thing. I pulled that motherboard out and stuck the old one in, *which would work sometimes but not all the time I at least would get some beeps* and the exact same thing happened. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

So strange. I installed WC 3 and Farcry.

For some reason, when I try to play the game specially the game itself, it seems my HD powers off and powers on again. That freezes the screen for a few seconds. I try to move it and again it powers off and on again and eventually it freezes or restarts.

I have Sims and it works fine with that.

Is it perhaps I don't have enough power? My power supply is 350W so I thought that should be decent enough.

Currently, I have a 2100+ AMD with the infamous ECS purple board. Just one 16X DVD, with 9800 PRO.

The only guess I have is that the PRO has its own power supply so when it needs some extra juice, it sucks up a bit more from the HD...that's my only guess but that shouldn't happen.

Any suggestions? Is it a virus? Should I do a surface scan? How?

A:HD powers off and powers on again...when trying to play games.

The 1st thing I do when pc plays up is scan for virus and malaware. Then it's down to process of elimination, hardware or software. If it's hardware it could be your psu. The 350 watt is overall or 'output'? If it's not output it may not be big enough. Also could be driver for graphics card - update anyway. Try tests on DirectX. Is graphics card ram enough?

I bought a FlashVoyager 16GBGT in September for use with my XP pro machine and all was fine. I have now upgraded to Windows 7 Pro 32-bit and I can no longer use the flash drive. When I plug it into a port the Autoplay window pops up for a few seconds and then disappears, then reappears, then... and so on. If I catch the Autoplay window in time I can get Windows Explorer to come up but it immediately closes.
I have tried it on an XP machine and everything works perfectly. I have reformatted the flash drive to FAT32 on the XP machine but nothing changes on the Windows 7 machine.
I have tried on the machine's ports and a powered hub.
I do not have access to another Windows 7 machine to test.
I also have a FlashVoyager 4GB which works fine have tried another 4GB drive which also works perfectly. Another 4GB generic flash drive has the same problem.
I found an old HDD and did a clean install of Windows 7. There were no problems with the Flash Voyager GT and its driver! The generic drive also worked perfectly.
As I don't really want to do a full clean install of Windows 7 and all software etc, I did a repair install... BUT this hasn't fixed the problem. What seems to be happening is that the driver for the flash drive is installing, uninstalling, installing and so on. I wanted to try to remove the drivers then reinstall them before I go to a full reinstall of the OS but I don't have the knowledge to know how to do this. Can anyone tell me how to go about this. You can read the saga version of this problem in the topic I posted called "blank screen bootup". The short version is that I ordered a new motherboard (Shuttle AK35GTR2) because I was having this problem with a Soltek board. Now I am having this problem with the Shuttle board after I tried reversing the fan position because I had lost my video display.

A:Machine Powers up, then powers down

fist off, never reverse any of connections for the fans, they are keyed for a reason, plus you mainboard may not be the problem, your power supply may not be adequate or is beginning to flake on you. try swapping that out, its more often than not a power issue that if it goes unseen, can wreck everything you plug it into. make sure you use approved supplies only, its better to pay a few extra bucks for quality instead of quantity, because a psu is only as good as the tranformers and capacitors within it.

New everything, but for sake of simplicity all I'm using is literally my motherboard, PSU, and that little speaker thing that beeps at me if need be.

I short the power to turn it on, it should beep at me, it does nothing for a few seconds, then powers down.

My buddy at work told me to try this when I told him of the original problem. Which was... I had the CPU, HSF, RAM, and Graphics card installed.
The result was when I powered up it (the CPU and PSU fan) spun for about 4-5 seconds, then powered down.

Without the graphics card the same thing happened.. and I tried with 3 different sticks of ram.

Motherboard dead, or something else?

I am installing a new mobo ( Shuttle AK35tgr2) after a series of problems with my former Soltek board which culminated with a problem in which the computer powers up and then powers down after about a nano second.

Well I'm having the same problem with the Shuttle.

First the problem was no video and no beeps from bios and in the process of trying to solve that I readjusted by CPU fan ( actually turned it around) and after that the computer powers up for a second then powers down.

I tried tightening the mobo screws and then it powered up for two or three seconds before shutting off.

I am thinking of changing the fan. It is about the only component that isn't new or hasn't been tested.

I am at the end of my tether with this pc now, am hoping someone can help!

Recently have been suffering loads of blue screens, no particular error, just crashes for no reason and either reboots or ends at a blue screen where it says 'beginning physical dump of memory'.

Now at the very first boot up screen when it checks the memory, it takes ages to do it then says 'memory fail' press f1 to continue.

Also am unable to load on the sound drivers after a format as it says I do not have access to that file (I am administrator).

Also there are 3 'program file' folders and about 8 'windows' folders in my hard drive - the first folders are named correctly but the rest are like gobbledegook, ie 'pro%gram*file#s' etc.

hey,
i hav xp on my machine that has been working fine until recently;
Recently, when booting up, everything works, no unusual errors/beeps except for when windows has loaded,
it enters the desktop and displays my antivirus autoupdater/items on the desktop and proceeds to load my startup files,
however, once it begins to load some of these files, the screen goes back to the blue that shows right after a login is completed and it attempts to load the files again. Then back to the blue..
The computer will simply cycle through doing this until i reboot it manually
Sometimes it will freeze or every 1/5 time load properly
when it loads properly; there are no noticable problems

I'm fairly sure its not a virus, and appart from paying a 'professional' pc repair man ?60 ($100!) to run avg 7.5 free on it, im not sure what to do,

My friend's hp Pavillion dv6000 is currently under my care. For sometime, she says, the laptop would get caught in a loop by which the power for the laptop would come on momentarily, then power down. Then power up, then power down. Etc. Nothing displayed. No POST. No nuthin'. But if one depresses Ctrl + Alt + Del it stays powered on, but do nothing else until it powers down and stays off after a few minutes of this suspended state. (Note we haven't even gotten to POST ever, so no boot screen, Vista, Safe Mode, etc.)

I stripped it down--removing all memory modules, the hard drive (drive runs, contents are intact), and the optical drive. Upon start up the same routine took place and there were no beep codes!

I followed the instructions for resetting the BIOS (Pull battery. Tested it: 3VDC registering).

I've done this with battery only, power adapter only, and both. I get the same results regardless.

So the question: Is it dead? My opinion: Yep. The anomaly that keeps me wondering (and this may be just nothing): Why should Ctrl + Alt + Del do anything?

Maybe just answer the first question.

OK, quick background: I am a software developer and have built perhaps 30 systems in my life, and this is the first time I have every been this baffled. I have come here looking for help! Thank you in advance!

Last week I woke up and walked over to my 6-month-old dev machine (it has worked flawlessly since Dec 07). It was hibernating. I moved the mouse, then tapped the space bar, but the system didn't respond. I hit the reset button and the system restarted. Here's where the problem is:

The system comes on, stays up for 4-5 seconds, there are no beeps and it does not post, then it shuts down. It repeats this over and over until I shut the power supply off.

Now then, before you give any advice, here is what I have done:

I assumed it was the power supply, so I have replaced it twice. The current PSU is a Antec 850watt unit. I've tried multiple outlets and a different surge protector but the system still does the same thing!

Then I assumed it was the Motherboard. I first tried a new ATX micro board from a local shop (the system still did the same thing) then I ordered a new MoBo from NewEgg. The system still does the same thing.

I had the CPU checked out, and it was fine. Still, I bought a new one just to be safe and the system still does the same thing!

I have replaced the video card with one that I know works (to prove it, I am using it now on this system to post this message). The video card swap did nothing- the system still did the same t... Read more

first off here are my specifications

Antec 900 case
850W Antec Quattro PSU
8800GTX stock
C2D E6850 @ stock
2GB ram 800mhz

This problem has been happening sometimes after i move my pc, whether it be turning it on its side, moving it in a car, etc. Basically, after ive moved the pc in one way or another, and try to turn it back on, it will sometimes shut off again after about 10 seconds, before the boot screen appears. I can fix this usually by tilting the case back on its side, shaking it gently etc, but it usually takes multiple tries to make it turn on properly again. but its really annoying because im afraid to move it now. Note that it is not a hardware issue as when the pc IS on, its never suddenly turned off, it only happens after i move it.

my guess is perhaps a short-circuiting issue of some sort, but id like an expert opinion on this and perhaps a solution or troubleshooting guide.

Hi,

When I press the power button on the case the computer sounds like it powers up but nothing happens, the monitor doesn't react at all, anything plugged in looks like it powers up for a second (e.g. 360 remote) but then goes dead.

On closer inspection inside -
The CPU fan is going
The GPU is lit up as normal
However the back fan isn't moving and there's no light on the cases power indicators.

The case must be linked up right since the power button works?

I've tried unplugging/replugging the power button/led/reset switch section, the case fan option and the main 24(?) pin power on the motherboard, but still the same once booted up

It was working fine until it went into sleep mode today, then refused to get out of it and is just like this once restarted...

PC powers down on it's own now and again.

Win 8.1 64 bit

This has happened a few times over the last 2 weeks giving me no reason why. It powers back up fully and functions as I expect to.

I had a pop up last week saying that my AMD Driver was out of date so I updated it thinking that might have been the reason for it shutting down.
I also made sure the vents were not blocked and also blew out inside of the tower to make sure that it wasn't overheating.

Any help appreciated.

Ok, for a week now, my PC will power on when I press the button, boot normally for a few seconds, then it just loses all power.
If I press the power button again, it boots perfectly fine.
I thought it could be the switch on the case, so have bought a new case and installed it, making sure all the connections are tight. For a while (2 turn ons) it was fine and I thought it was fixed, today I have gone to turn it on and it has done the same.
Is my PSU dying?
or could it be something else?

I just put together a new system yesterday.
PC Chips M909G mobo
Intel Celeron D 2.53 Processor
DDR333 pc2700 256 ram

It powers up after I installed the processor and plugged in the power cable. I plugged in the power connections to the HD,Floppy Drive and CD ROM. They all lit up, the CD Rom will open and close ok.BUT when I plug the straps in, they stop working and the light goes out on the HD, CD Rom wont eject, and the floppy drive stays lit and wont do anything. I tried turning the straps around, switching them, and I took out the mobo and put it back in the case. Still nothing. What could be wrong. I switched the jumper on the mobo to clear from normal and still nothng. I plugged the system in to a monitor and get get nothing, no display and my monitor stays yellow light like nothing is plugged in to it.
Whats ths deal? Bad mobo? Help!

A:powers up, but.................

Probbly your HDD lead wire to motherboard or reset switch is backwards check here this is from your reset botton on your case to your motherboard..It possible the motherboard shorted ? And what straps are you talking about ? The IDE cables ? Do you have the master and slave sit right? Also do you have the 12 volts plug pluged in to motherboard ?

i built this pc and its been working great for about a year. all brand new parts. anyway, i was out of town and from what i was told my son powered it down from the button my surge protector instead of the power button or windows shutdown. whatever happened, now when i turn it on, i get power but thats all. no bios, windows etc. i dont have spare parts anymore to swap out and troubleshoot it. i have reseated everything and made sure all the connections are tight inside. hooked up a different monitor and tossed in another harddrive from another computer. still nothing. any ideas?

how sure are you that your son is really telling what happened? simply turning off the surge protector should't cause said problem...

Hi guys, having a rather odd and frustrating problem.

I purchased a new CPU cooler and had to remove the MB to fit it. Everything went fine but when I plugged it all back in the PC powered on, fans and drives started spining but nothing displayed on the monitor (no error beeps either). After a bit of screwing around I figured I damaged the MB while removing/fitting the cooler so I went down the road and bought a new MB. Went through the install process of fitting the new board, but once again same problem! Power but no display, monitor light just blinks.

I tried a different PSU, RAM and video card but nothing helped.

The only thing I haven't changed is the CPU (don't have spare). Could the CPU be fried? I don't see any scorch marks or smell anything. When I insert the CPU without the heatsink I can feel it get hot and then cools when I power the PC down (only did for 10 seconds so I don't really fry the CPU). To me this "indicates" that the CPU is ok, or will the CPU continue to heat even if it's dead?

Any suggestions/ideas?

Oh, one odd thing I noticed immediately after fitting the cooler in the original MB was after I powered the PC on the DVD drive made a strange sound and the light blinked. I pushed the eject button but it only came out half way and then went back in. Never seen that before.

Hi!

Could you please do the following:

Go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download Hijack This.

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you interpret the results.

Hello all...

Could use some thoughts on this issue.

CPU Specs
Alienware 9700m
AMD turion 64
2 GB RAM
Dual nVidia video cards
Vista Home Ultimate
ZoneAlarm

Last night while just running through some web sites I encountered the dreaded BSOD ...

The BSOD message flashed several times very quickly (not enough time for me to even see what the error message was), had vertical miscolored lines through it (almost looked as if the LCD had failed), and then the screen when to a powered black screen (it was obvious that the backlight was on and that it was displaying a black screen).

Pressing the power button immediately powered off the machine (vs. the 3-5 second hold to hard reset, never a good sign in my book).

Upon powering back up, I am presented with the same "back lit black screen" for 3 or so minutes, then the machine seems to reset itself (screen powers down) for about 1 minute... rinse and repeat. I've removed the battery and let it sit without power, same result. Overnight cold reboot, again same result

Things that happen when I power back up:
Fans start (even the variable speed cooling seems to be working)
backlight for screen works
HDD activity light is active, though I cannot hear any HDD activity
some function keys work (screen dimming being on of them)
DVD/CD ROM powers, will spin a disk
Other LED lights appear to work

Things that are not seen when powering back up
No BIOS Screen appearing at startup
No OS Screen
No outward indication that a rec... Read more

My pc powers down after a few seconds of starting Windows (Vista H.P.) It will run forever if I just go to the system bios, but as soon as Windows starts to boot (in safe mode also) , the power shuts off. I have tried booting from the ultimate boot cd to try and test memory/hdd, but it powers down as soon as I try to run one of the tests. Any help???

Hello,

I have a new HP Pavilion dv9540eb, and it boots all alone every day at 6AM. This is very annoying, and potentiality harmful to the machine if it is in a bag.

I contacted HP support, and they told me to : update the Bios, reinstall Power Management Settings, which I did without solving the problem.

They told me the other day that the problem is caused by Windows task Scheduler.

I explored the Task Scheduler, and modified every task to run only at log on. The laptop still powered on every (?not sure about every day, but it did and woke me 3 times since the change) day at 6AM.

The Task Scheduler log does not show any "Last Run Succeeded" earlier than me logging on, so the problem might be somewhere else. HP support will not help me and told me I have a defective power button and told me to contact local technical support. Can a defective power button make my laptop power on at 6AM and ONLY 6AM every day, independently of where (office, room, living room) and how (on a table, in a bag) it is stored at the time? My guess is no, but I can be wrong.

If you, in any kind, can help me on this, I would be very thankful!

Hi and Welcome to TSF.

I can't speak directly to your question about the power button, but I would offer a suggestion to check the Event Viewer for all activity preceeding and including 06:00 hours. There is an area specific to the activities of the Task Scheduler (TS). This may allow you to somehow prove to HP that TS is not at fault in the 0600 wake-up calls. Here is a screen shot:

Event Viewer - START | type eventvwr.exe i the start search box | select same

.

.
If you need assistance with the Task Scheduler or Event Viewer, post again.

Regards. . .
