I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

for the past while now I have been having problems with the window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working.

1-The problem started out with the speakers when I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up a few weeks later I got no sound out of the internal speakers. I tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted with no results. I then tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. I did try head phones as I was told by a friend to do so and I am able to hear sounds and music just fine.

2-After this first issue, I noticed that when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, I also have this same size on my main screen. I have been able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

I have upgraded to windows XP from windows ME erasing whatever information I could, hoping that a new operating program would solve this problem. But with my bad luck it hasn't changed. If you someone could help me resolve these problems I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

...
...

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

Thanks.

[Tuesday morning] I have additional information:

I now get the following errors:

Totally stunned to find it had no email softeware though - and hence now have to find my way through an upgrade maze fraught no doubt with the ususal ms ifs and buts that always seem to plague upgrades or data transfers involving ms products - it must be me! - LOL!

1. I use outlook 2003 and want to keep all my outlook emails on the new laptop too;

2 Is it easy to get outlook onto my new laptop? Presumably 2007?

3. Is it easy to import my existing emails from 2003 outlook on my old laptop to this 2007 outlook - assuming the latter can be loaded onto my new laptop.

I do not want microsoift windows mail live - as I am nervous about keeping my email online.

Any help with achieving the outcome desired is much appreciated,

many thanks,

1. Outlook stores everything in the .pst file, so you can copy this from the old installation to the new one.

2. 2003 will work on W7, upgrade to 07 if you wish.

3. See #1

I just bought a brand new hp laptop and sometimes when I start it up aftering being off a black screen pops up saying that there is no bootable device. It doesn't let me do anything so I have no choice but to manualy turn it off. When it comes back on it is totally fine.

I've also being having another problem which started today and has happened multiple times. I will be online or my laptop will just be sitting there and the screen goes black for a second or two. It will then come back on and say something like the screen failed but it was restored.

What should I do? I just bought it a week ago. Should I trade it in for another one or is there a cheap (preferrably free) easy fix? Please help.

If you need more info just ask.

Thanks.

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

Thanks

Ever since I have had problems with "shut downs" error messages with programs like Avira and Avast virus checkers.

Is there a standard set of tests that I can run this HP through that will help me find the problem?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for help with a laptop of mine. It is a Fujitsu amilo d 7830 and it was running xp pro. Recently when I was using it sometimes it would just reboot but when it tried 2 start up again just switched of and I had to wait at least 10 minutes before I could turn it on again. Now when I turn it on the fans and all come on but no bios comes up. Its not the monitor as I plugged an external into it and I think its something to do with the rebooting that happened earlier. I also tried other ram and thats not the problem.
Any ideas?

Got a Dell Inspiron 9300. Having a few different problems with it.
FN+ up/down arrows wont brighten my screen. I have Dell Quickset installed and running but it didnt fix the problem. My LCD is quite dim.
Just ran diagnostics (F12 @ startup) and it found 2 problems:
DST short test failed - apparently a problem with the hard drive, but my system is up and running fine. Not perfect, but ok.
LCD inverter detection test failed. - I just replaced my LCD screen. Wondering if I missed something when I installed it or if its driver related. I tried setting the laptop to max performance in the power settings and had no change in the screen.
Wondering if its the LCD data cable. Wondering if it was 'squished' on rebuild, maybe a wire could be loose or frayed.
I have some driver issues as well, wondering if there's an easy way to get rid of my current drivers and start fresh. I downloaded some driver-finder program and got everything from there, but I'd like to start over and get everything right from the Dell website.

Do you get any kind of glow from the screen?

With the power turned off, you may want to double check the cable and connectors that connect the display's backlight inverter board to the motherboard.

I have an hp pavillion dv6000 notebook running on Windows Vista.. Last week I was having problems with the computer "sticking". I

did every diagnostic that came with the pc, I ran virus scans numerous times. Both test said nothing was wrong., but obviously

there was. So I did a systrem restore ( F11) The computer restored properly and it no longer stuck but was so slow it would take

15 to 25 minutes just to start up. So my son suggested I remove the extra memory (Kingston) then try. Now it won't even boot up

even in safe mode. Every time I try I only get the screen asking how to restart Windows. No matter what option I choose, it acts

as if it's gonna startup, only to return to the same screen again and again. Any help woulb be greatly appreciated. PLEASE!

alright, so basically my friends lap top was all screwed: spyware, viruses, you know the works. so i offered to reformat it for her, it was running vista at the time and she told me she didn't like vista.

so i used a Windows XP Pro disc to reformat her laptop. everything went well up until it got to the windows set up mode. the lap top completely restarted went back to the windows set up and gave me these two errors.

"A write operation was attempted to a volume after it was dismounted"

and

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."

both the errors flash real quick and the laptop restarts again, and it just continues to do this. Any ideas on how to fix this?

also, her power is bit faulty she told me, so i'm thinking that MIGHT be one of the problems.

thanks in advance for any help. it's very much appreciated.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

I have a relatively new laptop (bought in September), Acer Laptop Aspire E5-573G-56RG Intel Core i5 5200U (2.20 GHz) 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD. I have had quite a few problems, some of which I have already mentioned in this forum. I shall be in the USA in February for a few weeks, and hope that the guarantee would cover whatever is wrong with the laptop.

I have bought many laptops in the past: HP, Dell and Acer (this is the third one; the other two are working fine on the same network and modem-Fritzbox 7390) for me and for my friends and family, and have never had such problems. What I need to know is how to convince Acer that something, indeed, is wrong, and if there are any tests which I can undertake to show them that this was not working as expected. I bought it from Newegg. The network speed on all the laptops is about the same

The problems are multifold and occur with all of the browsers: Edge, IE11, Firefox and Chrome. Extremely slow browsing, great difficulty in attaching any attachments, normally small, to emails (I normally use Gmail, but same thing happens with Yahoo). Sometimes, the files can be attached after an inordinate amount of time, but usually I get a message saying attachment failure. I can attach it to the same email on another laptop! Many sites can not be opened, again not always but many times.

I have windows defender as the anti virus, have cleaned it with malwarbytes anti malware, spybot s&d, superantispyware, and ccleaner (all free versions). Su... Read more

My HP g6 series i3 laptop (upon which I am typing) has been very poorly for some weeks.

The main problem is that I cannot install many programs. For instance if I try to install an updated version of the (excellent!) audio program Reaper, I get the error message "Cannot Initialize Plugins Directory". I tried to install a tool called "Unlocker" but got the same error.
Earlier today my internet was not working "Not connected to a Network" I tried Troubleshooter and, for the first time ever THAT threw up an error and would not work.

I have cleaned out temp files, run sfc /scannow all to no avail. To add to my pain the DVD drive only works as an when it wants to! I can run the new, paid for kosher Win7/64 Home P disc to to an install but not boot from it to run Repair. I have put the W7 disc on a USB stick but that won't boot into an repair mode either.
I am fairly well used to running Repair for XP but don't really know how it goes for Win 7!

I am prepared to do a full format and install if that is the last resort but I would rather not.

Cheers all,

Dave.

First off, thanks for the site!

I am running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with the Intel Celeron M processor, using Windows XP. I am using Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG, and I think McAfee security systems. Here are the problems I am having:

First, it takes a while for internet explorer or Mozilla to open when I double click it to get on the internet. When you click the icon, it may be take up to 15-20 seconds (or more) for anything at all to happen, then the page wil slowly load. You can open up new windows from the site you visit, but trying to open a new window clicking the desktop icon is painstakingly slow. Also, when I leave a window minimized for any duration of time, it sometimes won't open back up. It seems like they aren't responding, and I do not know how to troubleshoot it.

Second, another issue I have encountered deals with the My Music folder under My Documents. I can open it without any problem, but sometimes X'ing out of it does weird things. What happens is it will close, and all my desktop icons will flash and completely disappear, with only the background image remaining. After 10-20 seconds, everything will reappear. What is causing this, and how do I fix it?

Finally, my computer seems slower than normal, and I have gone through all the basic suggestions (short of wiping it and starting over). Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello,
I have previously posted a thread earlier today, but I didn't explain the problem very well. The problem exists, not on the computer I am using to type this message, but on a seperate laptop, that is so badly infected that it keeps re-booting for no reason, after a few minutes. I therefore cannot download anything from the internet etc, or very much really.

Would it be possible to boot the laptop into a safe mode and attempt things ? I am not surehow to get safe mode however. I think i probably have to hit a certain key on firing the laptop up ???

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers,
Dave.

I'm not too sure on what the issue is with my laptop. I just finished building it, it's a Clevo 5620D w/ Mobile Radeon 9000. I got the thing all together, and installed Windows XP. First off, that was hard because the computer would lock up during install. Finally I got everything installed though. The same thing would continue to happen in XP. I would be using it fine for a few minutes and then all of a sudden the system would just freeze and I'd have to manually shut down the system. I have all the drivers installed for the system, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm stumped because it was even locking up while installed windows. I was thinking it could be something with the video but I really have no idea. I'd greatly appreciate help.....thanks...

sounds like the lappie has a problem (maybe video), not the OS. I'd be looking into the lockup as soon as it happens.

Hello! Over the past 6 months, my laptop which I had purchased has started to decline. Problems I have encountered so far : The fan and hard drive have both become louder than I would be comfortable with. I get a loud beeping noise every 15 minutes or so from the laptop (which gets VERY agitating) The trackpad sometimes ceases to function correctly and in my opinion is of rather poor quality The laptops build quality is below average. The plastic behind the screen is flimsy and bends with little pressure.  When I had made the purchase, it had been advertised with "AMD Gaming Evolved" and all that pizazz giving an impression it can do some gaming, but nope. Not only could it not run Counter Strike smoothly, but it even struggles with Minecraft! Thats when I did a bit of research and found that it was powered with an APU, rather than having a dedicated graphics card. I wish I had contacted HP sooner, as my warranty has run out, but I will not be satisfied until something is done about it. I paid 600 euros, I got a plastic laptop with the same amount of power as my 8 year old desktop PC.

Please help - I am going quietly mad trying to fix this.
I have a Desktop, running XP Pro and a laptop running XP Home.
I have networked via a router. With the laptop I can see the desktop, connect to the internet and share files etc.
With the desktop, I cannot see the laptop, no natter what I do.
I get the access is denied. You may not have permission notice.
I can't seem to figure a way out of this. I can ping both machines from each other and they are seen but I cannot access the laptop at all from the desktop. Other than that, the network is working perfectly.
I also have a third desktop computer (running XP Home) which is part of the network. The laptop can see it and share files etc but the XP Home desktop cannot see the laptop.
Can someone please help?

I don't yet use passwords on my network. Could this be a factor?

I have a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC in my Toshiba laptop

It didn't seem to be working so I decided to see if there was an updated driver, found one and tried to install it. Then I was getting the yellow triangle beside in in Device Manager.

Tried again, tried rolling back the device driver, tried unistalling it and let Windows detect it, but everytime it tries to install a driver this is the result:
In Device Manager here is the General tab for it:
And the Driver tab:
Any suggestions or does this look like a hardware problem?

Hi

The dvd rom in my pc is no longer working & I'm trying to figure out how to fix it.

I have an Acer Aspire 5520 & I did a complete restore to factory settings last night, and all worked well until about 3 hours ago. I did a system restore & its still not working.

It is showing up in device manager & even in my computer, but its like its just dead.

At one point I put pressure on the drive pushing it in & it responded, but that only lasted for one disk.

I was wondering if maybe the drive has come out of the connection a bit at the back, and if it has, is it easy to get in there and fix it myself. (I have built desktop pcs before but have only just replaced RAM on this laptop.

Also if it sounds like the drive has died on me, is it easy for me to replace? I am only on the disability pension & can't afford to put it in at a pc shop & be ripped off.

Does anyone know of a good site that will help me through the process of replacing the drive?

The specs are:
specs:
AMD Turion 64 x 2 mobile technology TL-64 2.20GHz
32-bit OS
Windows Vista Home Premium
Nvida gforce 8600M GS
3GB DDR2
15.4'' monitor
220 GB HDD

I know this all sounds pretty dicky but its driving me crazy.

Thanks heaps

I have a laptop that I am trying to figure out which originally seemed to have a faulty screen as it was not working although it would be OK with an external screen.
I have't been able to do much with it cos it keeps switching itself off after a couple of mins, when it does the charger led on the front flashes orange,
The laptop is a Toshiba 6000 with Win 98SE.
The flashing charger light seems to suggest overheating although it continues hours after I switch the machine off. Whether this model was prone to overheating I don't know. The light flashes even when the charger is not connected.
As well as the screen not working it has not recognised the sound chip or the modem when I check device manager, I did manage to load the drivers for the graphics......eventually.
I feel as tho I am going in circles right now . so any help would be welcome.

Found this:
Make sure that the laptop computer has been switched to External display mode when you connect the keylite. You will know you are in this mode because the laptop display will go blank. If you are not sure how to do this please refer to the manual for the computer. The following are some typical ways to switch video modes on a laptop. See also Laptop VGA mode switching.
HOTKEYS - The majority of laptop computers use a HOTKEY combination to switch the computer among it's supported video display modes. An "Fn" key is typical - used in combination with a function key ( F1-F10). .
SOFTWARE- Some Laptops us a piece of software to change the modes. This is usually accompanied by a re-booting of the machine. There may be a tab in the Display Properties or in the Start/Programs menu for your laptop. Some laptops require making this setting in the BIOS Setup.
AUTO-DETECT - Some laptops try to auto-detect whether there is a monitor attached to the external VGA port, and will switch to it if there is when you boot up the laptop.

Well after searching the threads and following all advise given about my problem I figured I might as well ask ..

I have a 3 year hold lap top (Averatec 6200). It is loaded with XP sp2 and regularly gets the automatic updates... mostly used traveling to watch DVD's and get e-mail when not home.. lately though been online a lot at home also.

Problem is it seems to not load a number of Flash drives, my MP3 player and a SD usb card reader.... all these things loaded okay on my older main computer.. haven't checked the MP3 player but it did load on another lap top...

I get the error.. can not recoginize device... puter has 4 usb ports, 2 per side.. amnot using any other usb port when trying to hook up tte non working ones..

have checked devise manager.... am getting a yellow warning on non-plug and play seriel and parport.. would not repair says no device connected? as a side note some usb flash drives do seem to work but i need to double check them.. have not in a while... and also my camera has no problem working as well as my mouse.....

Hi quiller and welcome to TSF

What exact model is your Averatec 6200 : 6200H60, 6210HX80, 6210X60, 6235 or 6240 ? Here's the link to Averatec's driver download section but seems there's no general chipset update available so there's nothing really worth downloading there.

In the device manager go to view and check "show hidden devices". Report all warning or errors you may see there. Expand Universal Serial Bus controller and check that you see the word enhanced somewhere. Tell us if you can't find "enhanced" in any of the device's names there.

Unplug all your usb devices then go back to the device manager (use the touchpad mouse), expand Universal Serial Bus controller then right-click and uninstall all your USB root hubs and USB controllers. Reboot the computer and XP will redetect them (no worry, that's harmless).

Are you connecting your usb devices directly to the usb ports on the laptop or are you using some USB hub ? Try connecting the device directly, one device at a time. If the device is not recognized then reboot the computer and see if it helps. I would also try to reboot it once with no usb devices attached at all.

According to the reviews I quickly found on google that averatec 6200 laptop is a cheap one. It may be lacking juice to power more than one or two usb devices at the same time without an external power source. If that's the case an externally powered USB hub would solve the problem.

I have a laptop from ACER and when it boots up it gives me a message saying NTLDR is missing. Press any key to restart. When i do that it goes back to the say screen. so, i have to reboot the laptop and it will take me back to the same message. Can you tell me what the problems is and what i need to do?

A:laptop problems

To fix "NTLDR is Missing", follow these instructions:

1. Load Windows XP CD into CD drive.

2. Make sure BIOS is set to boot to CD drive.

3. Boot the computer from CD.

4. At menu, press "R" to load Recovery Console.

5. Select the installation to be fixed.
*The following instructions assume CD-ROM is labeled as drive D and the hard drive partition the windows installation is on is labeled as drive C. Replace the letters accordingly.

6. Type COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\ and then press ENTER.

7. Type COPY D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\ and then press ENTER.

8. Remove CD and type EXIT and press ENTER (to reboot your computer).

I have an HP Pavilion dv6700nr laptop. Originally, I wasn't really doing much on my laptop when this happened. All I saw on my laptop was bunch of black, white, and gray lines going across the screen. So, I thought that somehow I may have gotten a virus or something and since I couldn't do anything, I decided to turn off my computer and for a little bit. I then turn it back on and as soon as that happens it turns right off. It continues to do that until I press either crtl-alt-delete or the windows button. The first time I did that, I was able to get back to my home screen. So, I tried to do a scan on my computer only to see the same lines on my computer. So, I went through the same steps. I turned off my computer for a bit and turned it back on. It did the same thing of turning on and turning off all by itself. Now, when I try to use ctrl-alt-delete and the windows button, I hear my hard drive turn on but for whatever reason, the screen is off. So, I can't even see anything anymore on my screen. I tried hooking up another monitor to it so, I know it's not the lcd. I know that I don't need a new batter because I tested it and it doesn't change anything with or without it in there. It is no longer under warranty so, sending it back to hp would cost a whole bunch of money that I don't want to pay. I am hoping that there is someway I can either fix or maybe someone out there knows the problem. I wish I had more information but, to be honest, if ... Read more

On the black boot-up screen you are supposed to push somthing F8 or F8 and then something...what is it?
also, i just developed this weird blue line down the middle of my screen, is there any way to get rid of that?

A:2 laptop problems

How old is your laptop?

Do you have re-installation / recovery / restore disks?

Do you have your manual for your laptop? That, or contact with Acer may tell you about re-formatting / re-installing.

What problems, other than the blue line, are you having?

I have a Samsung RF511 notebook that is just under 15 months old. I have just started having problems switching it on. When I try to start it the fan comes on as if it is overheating. Could it be a faulty temperature sensor if there is such a thing? The hard disk is fine; I have removed it and tried it in a caddy on my desktop. Every now and then it does start OK but it is very hit and miss. Does this sound a serious problem? Can it be a repaired? I'd appreciate any advice.

My Sony FX215 has been broken due to some HD failure. I replace it with a Fujitsu Universal HD for Laptops (60gb).

So now, I'm supposed to put in a new OS on it, right?
I try the XP CD but after it starts up, something about a partmgr.sys error comes up. The error pops up during the beginning of the loading. I don't have a chance to partition it or something.
Here is a link that describes it.
http://www.v2premier.com/techsuppor...Support Center/9/1/2/307/748/0000748-0000.htm

I manage to get a copy of 98 boot disk and boot that. I follow the steps to format it. I press the power button to restart (that is the way to restart right? i mean you don't type something in DOS), I type in "format c: /s" and another error comes up saying, Format is not supported in C drive.

What is wrong?

There IS a Fujitsu Disk Manager type thing but it is like $15 which is outrageous since I already paid $200 for this HD.

Its an HP Pavillion 9000 wide screen about 2 yr old.

Back in June the switch on the built in wireless card stopped working it is now in the off postion. No problem I picked up a wireless usb one to use.
Also about the same time I had to open the task manager to get any where.
Now trying to turn it on for the last five minutes it sounds like it is trying to start but will not. It just starting the fan then you hear a tick then does that all over again.

It has now started up but it took longer that usual to get going.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I did get some malware on it in the past but I think I got that taken care of thanks to this site

So I left him in that contition for more than 20 minutes, shut it down with power button and then turn it up again, and its working. But thats is only happening when I left him to work in that condition for proper amount of time, and if i try to turn him off imediately after black screen, the same process will happend and it wont boot up.I`ve read forums and found out that 2x times blinkin` means BIOS problem and I followed instructions and updated it to the newest version, but my problem still exist. I currently own a Packard Bell Easynote 5142 laptop which working fine until the other evening when the battery began to run low. I plugged the charger in but the battery continued to run down until the laptop switched itself off. Since then I have not been able to switch the laptop back on. When pressing the power button all 3 lights (power 2 x charging) flash then go off again but it fails to boot. I have tested the power supplier to ensure that is working correctly and the same thing happens with or without the battery connected.

I took the laptop into PC World as I was passing and as it was orginally purchased from there and they seemed to think that it may be the motherboard causing the problems but would be unable to fix it.

My first question is does this sound right?

If so how easy would it be to replace? I have built and managed desktops but never done anything with laptops.

And finally if it is straight forward any idea where I can by a new motherboard from?

Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to help and hopefully help me out.

Jon

A:Laptop Problems

Hi Jon

When you say you tested the PSU, what did you test, voltage or ampage, you can still get a voltage output but if the ampage has dropped due to component failure then it wont power the laptop.

Never trust PC world they dont know their ar*e from their Elbow, I use to go in regular just to mess the PC's up and test the knowledge of their sales reps and repair techs, they have the technical knowledge of a Monkey.

As for replacing a motherboard, well its easy to do but a right pain in the backside, however I speak from dealing with Dell laptops not Slackard Hells but I think they are all pretty much built the same.

Regards
