I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

for the past while now I have been having problems with the window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working.

1-The problem started out with the speakers when I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up a few weeks later I got no sound out of the internal speakers. I tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted with no results. I then tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. I did try head phones as I was told by a friend to do so and I am able to hear sounds and music just fine.

2-After this first issue, I noticed that when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, I also have this same size on my main screen. I have been able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

I have upgraded to windows XP from windows ME erasing whatever information I could, hoping that a new operating program would solve this problem. But with my bad luck it hasn't changed. If you someone could help me resolve these problems I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

...
...

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

Thanks.

[Tuesday morning] I have additional information:

I now get the following errors:

Hi techguys,

I magine my delight - santa brought a new windows 7 laptop - a great sony FW series - and with windows 7 I expected great things but alas I am already frustrated;

Totally stunned to find it had no email softeware though - and hence now have to find my way through an upgrade maze fraught no doubt with the ususal ms ifs and buts that always seem to plague upgrades or data transfers involving ms products - it must be me! - LOL!

1. I use outlook 2003 and want to keep all my outlook emails on the new laptop too;

2 Is it easy to get outlook onto my new laptop? Presumably 2007?

3. Is it easy to import my existing emails from 2003 outlook on my old laptop to this 2007 outlook - assuming the latter can be loaded onto my new laptop.

I do not want microsoift windows mail live - as I am nervous about keeping my email online.

Any help with achieving the outcome desired is much appreciated,

many thanks,

1. Outlook stores everything in the .pst file, so you can copy this from the old installation to the new one.

2. 2003 will work on W7, upgrade to 07 if you wish.

3. See #1

Windows Live mail like does not store your email on line.

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

Thanks

I just bought a brand new hp laptop and sometimes when I start it up aftering being off a black screen pops up saying that there is no bootable device. It doesn't let me do anything so I have no choice but to manualy turn it off. When it comes back on it is totally fine.

I've also being having another problem which started today and has happened multiple times. I will be online or my laptop will just be sitting there and the screen goes black for a second or two. It will then come back on and say something like the screen failed but it was restored.

What should I do? I just bought it a week ago. Should I trade it in for another one or is there a cheap (preferrably free) easy fix? Please help.

If you need more info just ask.

Thanks.

I'm running Vista on my HP laptop.

Recently I've come across some problems using both Safari and IE8 when downloading. Usually when I download .rar files I can open them through the download window that pops up, showing me the size and time remaining on my downloads.

Lately when I have been using this method, my files go missing. I go to open them and it says they cannot be opened because they have been moved. Searching for them in Windows Explorer never brings up any results either.

Also, I have a LG VX9900 (enV2) phone which I typically connect to my laptop via USB. About the same time the downloading problem occurred, my laptop no longer picks up my phone. I cannot install the drivers again because I can't open any of my downloaded files.

Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I have tried running full scans with Kaspersky but they stall out when it scans \Device\CdRom3

I currently own a Packard Bell Easynote 5142 laptop which working fine until the other evening when the battery began to run low. I plugged the charger in but the battery continued to run down until the laptop switched itself off. Since then I have not been able to switch the laptop back on. When pressing the power button all 3 lights (power 2 x charging) flash then go off again but it fails to boot. I have tested the power supplier to ensure that is working correctly and the same thing happens with or without the battery connected.

I took the laptop into PC World as I was passing and as it was orginally purchased from there and they seemed to think that it may be the motherboard causing the problems but would be unable to fix it.

My first question is does this sound right?

If so how easy would it be to replace? I have built and managed desktops but never done anything with laptops.

And finally if it is straight forward any idea where I can by a new motherboard from?

Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to help and hopefully help me out.

Hi Jon

When you say you tested the PSU, what did you test, voltage or ampage, you can still get a voltage output but if the ampage has dropped due to component failure then it wont power the laptop.

Never trust PC world they dont know their ar*e from their Elbow, I use to go in regular just to mess the PC's up and test the knowledge of their sales reps and repair techs, they have the technical knowledge of a Monkey.

As for replacing a motherboard, well its easy to do but a right pain in the backside, however I speak from dealing with Dell laptops not Slackard Hells but I think they are all pretty much built the same.

Regards

My HP g6 series i3 laptop (upon which I am typing) has been very poorly for some weeks.

The main problem is that I cannot install many programs. For instance if I try to install an updated version of the (excellent!) audio program Reaper, I get the error message "Cannot Initialize Plugins Directory". I tried to install a tool called "Unlocker" but got the same error.
Earlier today my internet was not working "Not connected to a Network" I tried Troubleshooter and, for the first time ever THAT threw up an error and would not work.

I have cleaned out temp files, run sfc /scannow all to no avail. To add to my pain the DVD drive only works as an when it wants to! I can run the new, paid for kosher Win7/64 Home P disc to to an install but not boot from it to run Repair. I have put the W7 disc on a USB stick but that won't boot into an repair mode either.
I am fairly well used to running Repair for XP but don't really know how it goes for Win 7!

I am prepared to do a full format and install if that is the last resort but I would rather not.

Cheers all,

Dave.

Hey, I've got a HP Pavillion dv6000 with Vista, I think it's about a year and a half old. Some time ago, I started getting problems with my CD drive. Sometimes it doesn't seem to be detected at all I can open and close it just like normal, and if I insert a disk it makes the usual noises, but it doesn't show up in my computer or if I run device management. The problem comes and goes, sometimes the drive works perfectly, other times it doesn't work at all... I can't find any pattern to it, and restarting never seems to work. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting, and I've tried resetting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the registery. I have no idea what to do, any help would be lovely.

Now its going very slow and all I want to do is find out how i can completely format my windows XP, so I can just reboot it and create a brand new user account as if it were a new computer.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 model, it's 2 years old... Until about June, there were no problems with it... In June, when I tried to install some updates, I got a Blue Screen of Death. I managed to fix it... Then in about July, there was a new update for Windows Vista SP2. I installed it, but after configuring updates, it reverted the changes... There were no problems with it afterwards. I was on the laptop several days after this, and it began to run really slow, so I restarted it. And it gave me another Blue Screen, I used Startup Repair to fix the problem. Several days after, I played a game called MapleStory, but after several minutes, the laptop froze, so I turned it off by holding the power button. During the reboot, the laptop went into one of those CHKDSK sessions. First thing I noticed about this session was that there were many "File Record Segment ##### is Unreadable", where ##### are numbers... They did some deleting.... and afterwards, I got on, happy that the laptop is still working... But when I look at the Wireless Internet... It is always identifying my connection... And when I try to open programs that requires you to go through the awkward darkened desktop and a window that asks if you "Allow" or "Cancel" the program from running on Vista, it won't even go to the darkened desktop with the window...

Someone suggested that I use my recovery CDs from Toshiba to fix the problem, what should I do?

Hi Guys-

I replaced my HD on this 4 yr. old Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop a few months back...

The laptop just started making some crackling type noises when fan would come on ...
It also started to sound like it has trouble staying on and overall sick...

I quickly powered down and powered back on ...it came back up, but still does not sound right.

Any suggestions? Am I correct in thinking it is likely the Fan? Should i simply replace? Run diagnostics to confirm? etc..Thank you for much......

A:Laptop Fan problems?

Crackling noises sounds like something other than the fan, though it's difficult to say. Most laptop fans are somewhat unique, not like the generic ones in desktops.

Hey

My brother has a Packard Bell laptop running MS XP - So I think this is the correct Forum for this.

The laptop is fairly new (about 14 months old) and he's never had any problems with it, but yesterday he tried booting it up and the first screen came up fine (with the Packard Bell logo and the option to press F2 / F10 for BIOS setup e.t.c.) but then the next screen just flashes "Not bootable CD in ATAPI CD-Rom" and then the whole screen goes blank - and nothing happens.

The error message is on for a split second and then that's it - the whole screen is blank, despite the laptop still actually being on.

Anyone know how this problem has being caused and how it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance,

Ash.

Hello

My mum received a laptop (Windows XP) from her workplace which she has been allowed to keep. We do not have administrative rights for some things like deleting a software, opening in safe mode etc.

The laptop has recently contracted a major virus. We cannot open in safe mode to remove the virus as we do not know the password that the administrator used.

The administrator has since left the workplace.

The only other option is to re-install the laptop using the Windows XP CD_ROM that got when I brought my computer but i cannot find it.

I really need somebody's help as to what to do next.

If we upgrade to Vista will that get rid of the virus? Will it be like a new installation?

Help

Irene

A:Laptop problems

if you upgrade to vista then yes it should get rid of the virus, as long as you delete the old partition and the format a new one(this should have been done anyway by the company as it is illeagal to have a companys data).

Hi all,

I own an Alienware Area-52 m9750 laptop which has developed a problem. About 2 weeks ago I discovered that whenever I insert a USB thumb drive, a message pops up telling me that “this device could operate faster if it was attached to a high speed USB port” and click this message to see a list of available high speed ports. After clicking the message, another window pops up listing all the USB ports on my laptop, and says that “there are no high speed USB controllers installed on this computer! I can still transfer files to and from the thumb drive, but the transfer rate is obviously not USB 2

I have tried various things to get this working again, but nothing has fixed it. I have even just finished reinstalling Windows (XP) and services packs etc, and the problem is still there which makes this look like a hardware problem.

Every other aspect of the laptop is working fine, and the only USB device which is attached is my mouse, which doesn’t get effected as it doesn’t require USB 2, but I am worried that this could lead to other problems down the line.

I have also emailed Alienware with the details, but they basically came back and said that your warranty ran out just over a year ago, so we are not interested in your problem (not their exact words, but that was the message)

Any feedback will be much appreciated

I have a Toshiba Satallite laptop running WinXP Home. It boots up ok but cannot access Explorer, Control panel, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express. Also cannot restore to earlier date - just hangs up. However, I can run other programs OK, i.e. Word, Excel. Nero, games, etc. I can dial up the internet via a modem. I can access the internet with Firefox but not with I.E.. I ran Virus programs, Skybot, HD test, and everything says it is OK.
I suspect some Win XP files are corrupted but don't know how to restore them without wiping out the HD and reinstalling Win. XP. I tried to reinstall XP but it said an later version is already on the HD and won't let me install. That's probably due to all of the updates that I've installed.
If I click on I.E. after boot up, it will just sit there and do nothing. If I then try other things, the processor seems to be in ultra slow mode. Even shutting down Windows takes forever and many windows are displayed during the process.
I don't know where to go from here but sure do need help! Appreciate any advice.
Thanks much,
Bob

On Laptops you usually toggle the FN + one of F keys - should have an image of a screen on
the toggle is usually - not in this order

Laptop
Laptop + VGA output
VGA Output only

But you say it works on other monitors without doing that - usually the default on boot is laptop only

I have been having some problems with the DVD ROM on my Laptop. I have The Sims installed on the Laptop and to play the game you have to stick the disc in for it to load up.

When you put the disc in the Drive, it has started to take ages to start reading the disc. It sounds like its working (making the whiring noise) then it stops... then it starts again, then it stops. It does this a few times then it will either kick in and load it up OR a message window will come up and say that "There is no disc in the Drive" or to check that the Drive door is closed properly. Sometimes you have to do this a few times to get it to work properly.

Sometimes when you have the game loaded up, and you have been playing for a little while, the DVD ROM starts to try to load up the game again almost crashing your game in the process Which can be really annoying!

Here are the details of the Laptop and DVD ROM:
Acer Aspire 1301 XV Laptop

Windows 2000 Professional

QSI DVD ROM SDR-083 which is the standard device it originally came with.

It is totally driving me mad. Do you think that the DVD ROM is knackered? Can it be replaced?

Thanks for any help!

A:Problems with my DVD ROM on my Laptop

1) Does the disk work fine in other machines or does it need to be cleaned? If same problem in other machine its the disk

2) Does the drive have problems recognizing any other disks? If so then its probably the drive.

If it IS the drive you have a couple of options.

A) Replace the drive. Expect to spend about $60-100 for the drive itself and about $75.00 labor to install it($75.00 an hour is about standard in my area for laptop repair)

B) Get an external dvd drive and use it instead. Probably cheaper but inconvienent.

Yet another possibility is a windows problem. It's been a long time since I played with Win 2k and so would probably either do a fast repair or reinstall instead of spending 2 hours troubleshooting it.

There are a few others here who are good with Win2k. Hopefully they will step in and offer a few OS specific pointers.

I'm not too sure on what the issue is with my laptop. I just finished building it, it's a Clevo 5620D w/ Mobile Radeon 9000. I got the thing all together, and installed Windows XP. First off, that was hard because the computer would lock up during install. Finally I got everything installed though. The same thing would continue to happen in XP. I would be using it fine for a few minutes and then all of a sudden the system would just freeze and I'd have to manually shut down the system. I have all the drivers installed for the system, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm stumped because it was even locking up while installed windows. I was thinking it could be something with the video but I really have no idea. I'd greatly appreciate help.....thanks...

sounds like the lappie has a problem (maybe video), not the OS. I'd be looking into the lockup as soon as it happens.

Hello everybody!

So, for the introduction...
I've got an Acer Aspire 6530G with Vista 32 Home ed. OS; AMD Turion x2 64, ATI Radeon 3650, Realtek HD Audio and 3 gb RAM.

And I've been experiencing three problems with it overall - all of them are connected with CPU usage and the heat, and if somebody helped me, I'd be very grateful.

SO. The 1st problem:
Overheating.

I had already solved one problem with my processor - my laptop was telling me all the time that I've got a single core processor(with a very high temperature!!) and I had to unlock the second core. I thought - I enabled the second core, okay, it's gonna be better..but nothing. My Acer's CPU temperature is 83?C when I am doing completely NOTHING.(just this window with Chrome opened and MSN.)
I tried to set the power mode, to change it, but nothing helped. I have got a cooling pad. No help. I also blew the air inside and even opened my acer - there was no dust at all(only a LITTLE on the fan.) I disabled every software that switches on automatically. I've installed new ATI and Realtek drivers. Manufacturers won't help me.
My laptop is set on a cooling pad on a wooden table.So...?! Ien understand that I won't be able to play the newest games on my laptop, but still, I think that swtiching off when playing a 5/6-year-old game is quite...

The 2nd problem:
Audiodg.exe

When I watch some videos and have a call on Skype, my CPU runs completely wild, goes to 100% usage and it has a problem with audiod... Read more

I would suggest putting some Arctic Silver or other thermal compound between the CPU and cooler. Once you've fixed the cooling problem, then we can process the other issues.

Allrighty, well to start, I have a toshiba laptop running XP, the screen is dead or something, I'm not sure what's wrong with that part, the screen just doesnn't do anything, but that's not the problem I need fixed right now. What I did was hook it up to a standard plug and play monitor. now, for some stupid reason, when I was in XP I enabled the plug and play monitor, this made it the second screen.... but I can't see the primary screen now because that's not what's displayed on the plug and play monitor like it used to. I need to know if there's a way to disable that plug and play monitor so I can see my main desktop again, and then I'll see if I can't fix the laptop screen being blank. If I had another laptop here I'd just figure out how to do it without a mouse, by copying my actions from one comp to the other, but I don't. Please help me, I'm getting really frustrated...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

Hello Everybody,

My wife's laptop has been acting funny for the last several weeks. In a nutshell the laptop would lock up when it was shut down for an extended period of time. Then on Monday the laptop locked up and would not restart.

When you try to power up the laptop it comes up with the failed shutdown screen and it asks how you want to restart the computer.

Safe mode,
Normal mode
etc.

If I select safe mode, I get a screen that says it is loading a munch of files then it gets stuck on a file and locks up.

If I select normal mode, I get the Windows logo screen and it locks up.

I am able to get into the Bios setup and see the hard drive and system parameters.

The laptop is about 3 years old and has been running fine up to a few weeks ago.

IT is a Dell Insperion but I am not sure what else it has at the moment. I am at work and do not have the computer handy.

Here is my question. How do I get the data off of the hard drive? Is there a way to remove the HD and install it in my PC to copy the data? Am I out of luck and all of the data is lost? What other information do you need in order to help me out?

A:laptop problems

Have you tried the option for "last known good?" if not give it a try.

Worst case, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to your pc. You will have to purchase an adapter. I personally use something similar to this model

I have a Toshiba laptop running Win XP. All of sudden I can't communicate with Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, or plain Explorer. I can't open the Control Panel either. It just hangs up when attempting to use these programs. I scanned the HD, ran Virus checkers, Spybot, etc. and no problems.
I can load programs like Word, Excel, Nero, etc. I can dial up to the internet and use Firefox but not I.E.
I tried to do a Restore to an earlier point and it won't allow me to do that in either Safe mode or thru Accessories! The computer bogs down and basically comes to a halt. Even when trying to shut it down I get many windows of items trying to close and eventually it does shut down.
It appears there is a problem within Win XP where there are files that are corrupted but I don't know how to correct without completely doing a wipe of the HD and reload WinXP.
I tried to reinstall Win XP but it said there was a later version on the computer and wouldn't let me install it.
Any suggestions as to what I should do or how to proceed from here?
Your help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob
