Preferred Solution: getting problems with my new hp laptop

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

for the past while now I have been having problems with the window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working.

1-The problem started out with the speakers when I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up a few weeks later I got no sound out of the internal speakers. I tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted with no results. I then tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. I did try head phones as I was told by a friend to do so and I am able to hear sounds and music just fine.

2-After this first issue, I noticed that when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, I also have this same size on my main screen. I have been able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

I have upgraded to windows XP from windows ME erasing whatever information I could, hoping that a new operating program would solve this problem. But with my bad luck it hasn't changed. If you someone could help me resolve these problems I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

[Tuesday morning] I have additional information:

I now get the following errors:

Hi techguys,

I magine my delight - santa brought a new windows 7 laptop - a great sony FW series - and with windows 7 I expected great things but alas I am already frustrated;

Totally stunned to find it had no email softeware though - and hence now have to find my way through an upgrade maze fraught no doubt with the ususal ms ifs and buts that always seem to plague upgrades or data transfers involving ms products - it must be me! - LOL!

1. I use outlook 2003 and want to keep all my outlook emails on the new laptop too;

2 Is it easy to get outlook onto my new laptop? Presumably 2007?

3. Is it easy to import my existing emails from 2003 outlook on my old laptop to this 2007 outlook - assuming the latter can be loaded onto my new laptop.

I do not want microsoift windows mail live - as I am nervous about keeping my email online.

Any help with achieving the outcome desired is much appreciated,

many thanks,

1. Outlook stores everything in the .pst file, so you can copy this from the old installation to the new one.

2. 2003 will work on W7, upgrade to 07 if you wish.

3. See #1

I just bought a brand new hp laptop and sometimes when I start it up aftering being off a black screen pops up saying that there is no bootable device. It doesn't let me do anything so I have no choice but to manualy turn it off. When it comes back on it is totally fine.

I've also being having another problem which started today and has happened multiple times. I will be online or my laptop will just be sitting there and the screen goes black for a second or two. It will then come back on and say something like the screen failed but it was restored.

What should I do? I just bought it a week ago. Should I trade it in for another one or is there a cheap (preferrably free) easy fix? Please help.

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

I have an HP Pavilion zv6130 that seems unstable. It gets lots of messages when shutting down from Microsoft about encountering errors and wants me to send reports to them.

I first had problems after a difficult time installing Native Instruments--Akoustik Piano.

Ever since I have had problems with "shut downs" error messages with programs like Avira and Avast virus checkers.
Is there a standard set of tests that I can run this HP through that will help me find the problem?

My HP Pavilion dc1355ea is about 3 years old. Running XP SP2. Have recently been experiencing a few issues so hoping someone can help me out.

My first issue is that it won't restart automatically. If I click "Restart" the machine powers down but doesn't power up again. I have to press the power button manually. Such a pain - especially when trying to install software which requires rebooting.

Can anyone suggest a fix?? Have tried google but not much success.

I'll post about other issues in due course

I have a laptop from ACER and when it boots up it gives me a message saying NTLDR is missing. Press any key to restart. When i do that it goes back to the say screen. so, i have to reboot the laptop and it will take me back to the same message. Can you tell me what the problems is and what i need to do?

A:laptop problems

To fix "NTLDR is Missing", follow these instructions:

1. Load Windows XP CD into CD drive.

2. Make sure BIOS is set to boot to CD drive.

3. Boot the computer from CD.

4. At menu, press "R" to load Recovery Console.

5. Select the installation to be fixed.
*The following instructions assume CD-ROM is labeled as drive D and the hard drive partition the windows installation is on is labeled as drive C. Replace the letters accordingly.

6. Type COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\ and then press ENTER.

7. Type COPY D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\ and then press ENTER.

8. Remove CD and type EXIT and press ENTER (to reboot your computer).

Hello wonderful helpers at techsupportforum...

I've had the following problem for two months or so. Avast flashes up blocked URLs that contain a random domain name or ip address, /go.php?<string of alphanumeric characters>. When I do a scan nothing seems to come up, sometimes a boot-time scan will reveal one or two "infected" files that are cleaned up, often from the Java installation, but the problem keeps recurring. At the beginning some google searches were being redirected but that problem seems to have disappeared. One iteration of svchost.exe frequently uses around 50%+ of the CPU time according to task manager. And finally the laptop refuses to hibernate, it begins to happen and then just reverts to the desktop, this happens whether I select "hiberbate" from the Off menu, or if it's enacted when the battery gets low. Not sure if these are all connected!

EDIT: Avast notes that the blocked URL is launched from C:\Windows...\svchost.exe

I have a 3 yr old HP PAVILION laptop model ZE4315. I decided to run a quick restore with my retore disks because my computer was running slow. Before i started i did ad aware for spyware and i ran my virus program.. all clean..

Then i put my first disk in and it got 44% finished and the laptop just shut completely off.. I have replaced the power cord and the battery( 134.00) and it still shuts off. Every once in a while it will say "No operating system found..
Anyone have any idea what has happened to my laptop and any ideas on what to do to get my quick restore disks to finish without it turning off before its done..
I dont have a bunch of money right now to put it in the shop, so im looking for some advice here.... Thank you in advance,,

A:Laptop problems

There are many, many possibilities, but if it's any consolation I have 2 of the same model here that have also died with terminal motherboard problems....

One will boot occasionally if whacked hard enough, but more often not. Power and blue LED's on but no activity at all. I suspect a cracked motherboard copper track, almost impossible to locate.

In your case, the "no operating system found" indicates it cannot locate the hard drive, which could be either a failed/failing hard drive or a motherboard IDE problem. Or not.

There is a limit on what can be serviced on a laptop, definitely not for an untrained DIY person, in my view. Be careful how much money you throw at it though, please.

The other just continually restarts without even reaching the BIOS display (or any display).

I have exhaustively tested everything that can be tested, and have concluded both have a motherboard fault of some manner. Realistically not repairable either from a practical aspect, or by replacement (as the cost is too high compared with a new laptop).

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 model, it's 2 years old... Until about June, there were no problems with it... In June, when I tried to install some updates, I got a Blue Screen of Death. I managed to fix it... Then in about July, there was a new update for Windows Vista SP2. I installed it, but after configuring updates, it reverted the changes... There were no problems with it afterwards. I was on the laptop several days after this, and it began to run really slow, so I restarted it. And it gave me another Blue Screen, I used Startup Repair to fix the problem. Several days after, I played a game called MapleStory, but after several minutes, the laptop froze, so I turned it off by holding the power button. During the reboot, the laptop went into one of those CHKDSK sessions. First thing I noticed about this session was that there were many "File Record Segment ##### is Unreadable", where ##### are numbers... They did some deleting.... and afterwards, I got on, happy that the laptop is still working... But when I look at the Wireless Internet... It is always identifying my connection... And when I try to open programs that requires you to go through the awkward darkened desktop and a window that asks if you "Allow" or "Cancel" the program from running on Vista, it won't even go to the darkened desktop with the window...

Someone suggested that I use my recovery CDs from Toshiba to fix the problem, what should I do?

On Laptops you usually toggle the FN + one of F keys - should have an image of a screen on
the toggle is usually - not in this order

Laptop + VGA output
VGA Output only

But you say it works on other monitors without doing that - usually the default on boot is laptop only

Hello! Over the past 6 months, my laptop which I had purchased has started to decline. Problems I have encountered so far : The fan and hard drive have both become louder than I would be comfortable with. I get a loud beeping noise every 15 minutes or so from the laptop (which gets VERY agitating) The trackpad sometimes ceases to function correctly and in my opinion is of rather poor quality The laptops build quality is below average. The plastic behind the screen is flimsy and bends with little pressure.  When I had made the purchase, it had been advertised with "AMD Gaming Evolved" and all that pizazz giving an impression it can do some gaming, but nope. Not only could it not run Counter Strike smoothly, but it even struggles with Minecraft! Thats when I did a bit of research and found that it was powered with an APU, rather than having a dedicated graphics card. I wish I had contacted HP sooner, as my warranty has run out, but I will not be satisfied until something is done about it. I paid 600 euros, I got a plastic laptop with the same amount of power as my 8 year old desktop PC.

It used to work before in the summer, but when i tried using it recently the connection will go through, however after a few seconds the picture will freeze, then a couple minutes later will turn into a blank black screen, or have a "no signal" connection.
During this time I am able to use the menu controls for the TV, change inputs and everything. However, if i cycle through my inputs and come back to the RBG input, the picture from the laptop will be back, but in a few seconds will go through the same problem again. Does anyone know what is wrong with this?

First of all, hello to everyone here. This is my first post on these forums, but I have been avidly reading the fabulous tips and info provided here. I am planning on getting a new PC in January with Vista on it, but for now, the problem I am having is on a friends' laptop, and he is requesting my assistance in fixing it.

When trying to load Internet Explorer (IE7), the 'spinning blue circle' pointer shows for a few seconds, then stops, and no IE window opens. It would appear that IE failed to load, but gave no error message.

On checking the task manager, however, I found that there were 40-50 iexplore.exe processes running. I promptly ended every iexplore.exe task, and tried again, only to have the same result, and 1 iexplore.exe process showing in task manager.

I decided to install IE8 Beta, to see if this cured the problem, and following the necessary reboot, IE actually loaded and appeared to work fine. I thought the problem was fixed, but an hour later, my friend phoned to say he was having the same problem again. He had turned on his laptop (1-month old Dell), and tried to load IE without success. He looked in Task Manager and found 6 iexplore.exe processes running. He said he had tried to load IE twice since turning his laptop on, not 6 times.

It seems that something is trying to load IE repeatedly, but I am unable to figure out what or why. I could not find anything odd in the startup programs, and a spyware/virus check was negative.

Well about 3 months ago I was on the internet with it and the power shut off and it re-started on its own. After this it started doing it totally random and has been to 2 different places, and to Gateway on 4 seperate ocassions. I get no error codes and the hard drive, lan board, heat sink and processor fan have all been replaced. I got tired of paying Gateway $600 per trip and figured I would buy another. I was basicly just seeing if anyone has had/ or may know what I could try to fix it. It is to nice of a unit to throw away.

Hello all,
I recently bought a Hewlett-Packard Laptop (Please see this link for specifications).
The laptop has built in Wifi capabilities, and, at first, all seemed to go well.

I'm using a BT Voyager 2500V to connect to the internet. This is connected to my main Desktop PC via Ethernet Cable and work's perfectly fine. When I first started setting up the Laptop, I sorted out the network settings for the Wireless Modem, put in my WEP key and was connected straight away.
After about 10 minutes of browsing, the connection was lost. I checked the signal strength and this read "Excellent". I tried to reconnect and it simply said "Can not connect to BT Voyager 2500V".

I switched off the modem and switched it back on, no change. I restarted the Laptop and had a fiddle with some settings. It then connected briefly before telling me my security settings did not match the Hub.

I then deleted all modem settings and started again, input the WEP key and got back online wirelessly. Everything was working fine for about an hour before the connection was lost once more. I've connected the Laptop up using an Ethernet cable and it's working perfectly. So why does it keep disconnecting wirelessly?

I apologise if this is obvious, but I really don't have a clue about this sort of stuff. At first I thought it was a firewall issue, but after switching that off, it still doesn't connect properly. Could there be some built in security issues with... Read more

Well after searching the threads and following all advise given about my problem I figured I might as well ask ..

I have a 3 year hold lap top (Averatec 6200). It is loaded with XP sp2 and regularly gets the automatic updates... mostly used traveling to watch DVD's and get e-mail when not home.. lately though been online a lot at home also.

Problem is it seems to not load a number of Flash drives, my MP3 player and a SD usb card reader.... all these things loaded okay on my older main computer.. haven't checked the MP3 player but it did load on another lap top...

I get the error.. can not recoginize device... puter has 4 usb ports, 2 per side.. amnot using any other usb port when trying to hook up tte non working ones..

have checked devise manager.... am getting a yellow warning on non-plug and play seriel and parport.. would not repair says no device connected? as a side note some usb flash drives do seem to work but i need to double check them.. have not in a while... and also my camera has no problem working as well as my mouse.....

Hi quiller and welcome to TSF

What exact model is your Averatec 6200 : 6200H60, 6210HX80, 6210X60, 6235 or 6240 ? Here's the link to Averatec's driver download section but seems there's no general chipset update available so there's nothing really worth downloading there.

In the device manager go to view and check "show hidden devices". Report all warning or errors you may see there. Expand Universal Serial Bus controller and check that you see the word enhanced somewhere. Tell us if you can't find "enhanced" in any of the device's names there.

Unplug all your usb devices then go back to the device manager (use the touchpad mouse), expand Universal Serial Bus controller then right-click and uninstall all your USB root hubs and USB controllers. Reboot the computer and XP will redetect them (no worry, that's harmless).

Are you connecting your usb devices directly to the usb ports on the laptop or are you using some USB hub ? Try connecting the device directly, one device at a time. If the device is not recognized then reboot the computer and see if it helps. I would also try to reboot it once with no usb devices attached at all.

According to the reviews I quickly found on google that averatec 6200 laptop is a cheap one. It may be lacking juice to power more than one or two usb devices at the same time without an external power source. If that's the case an externally powered USB hub would solve the problem.

I have a Toshiba Satallite laptop running WinXP Home. It boots up ok but cannot access Explorer, Control panel, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express. Also cannot restore to earlier date - just hangs up. However, I can run other programs OK, i.e. Word, Excel. Nero, games, etc. I can dial up the internet via a modem. I can access the internet with Firefox but not with I.E.. I ran Virus programs, Skybot, HD test, and everything says it is OK.
I suspect some Win XP files are corrupted but don't know how to restore them without wiping out the HD and reinstalling Win. XP. I tried to reinstall XP but it said an later version is already on the HD and won't let me install. That's probably due to all of the updates that I've installed.
If I click on I.E. after boot up, it will just sit there and do nothing. If I then try other things, the processor seems to be in ultra slow mode. Even shutting down Windows takes forever and many windows are displayed during the process.
I don't know where to go from here but sure do need help! Appreciate any advice.
Thanks much,

I try to power up my laptop, it gets to the windows xp logo screen, and then reboots. I tried going into safe mode but not able to do so as it does the same thing in safe mode as well. Any suggestions what could be wrong?

A:Laptop problems

I have had this problem too. If it is the same this will fix it. 1. Go into setup (F2, Delete, etc...) 2. In advanced settings change SATA Compatibility Mode To "Compatible" 3. Then reboot. I have checked this on my system and if you are having the same problem due to the symptoms you are talking about you may be then this should fix it let me know if it works or doesn't. If it doesn't you are going to have to be a bit more verbose about the specifics surrounding the problem. Just to let you know in the future 90% of all the help you will receive from this site will need more information than you are providing. For a list rules regarding this please see the threads regarding posting and the forum rules.

okay so ive had this crappy laptop for 7 months now, its the acer aspire 3610, and i ned to format it, and i have done it before but i forget how to do it.
On the black boot-up screen you are supposed to push somthing F8 or F8 and then something...what is it?
also, i just developed this weird blue line down the middle of my screen, is there any way to get rid of that?

A:2 laptop problems

How old is your laptop?

Do you have re-installation / recovery / restore disks?

Do you have your manual for your laptop? That, or contact with Acer may tell you about re-formatting / re-installing.

What problems, other than the blue line, are you having?

My Sony FX215 has been broken due to some HD failure. I replace it with a Fujitsu Universal HD for Laptops (60gb).

So now, I'm supposed to put in a new OS on it, right?
I try the XP CD but after it starts up, something about a partmgr.sys error comes up. The error pops up during the beginning of the loading. I don't have a chance to partition it or something.
Here is a link that describes it.
http://www.v2premier.com/techsuppor...Support Center/9/1/2/307/748/0000748-0000.htm

I manage to get a copy of 98 boot disk and boot that. I follow the steps to format it. I press the power button to restart (that is the way to restart right? i mean you don't type something in DOS), I type in "format c: /s" and another error comes up saying, Format is not supported in C drive.

What is wrong?

There IS a Fujitsu Disk Manager type thing but it is like $15 which is outrageous since I already paid $200 for this HD.

Hi All,

My Laptop (Compaq Presario V5000 Intel 1.4 Celeron,) has been having issues with the fan recently. I think its on its last legs as its making a nasty whirring sound when it gets warm. I've had the laptop apart, got a number/manufacturer of the fan but couldn't test it for a dead spot on the motor, I had no multimeter handy. The space between the fan and the heatsink was full of dust. Cleared all of that and its not on all the time now, making a nasty noise, its gone back to its old 'new state' of only powering up per cpu or to cool down on idle. I'm having a real problem sourcing a fan, all I can get hold of is the complete assembly (cover/subassembly) second hand. Of course if its second hand and they are poor motors it won't last long. Does anyone know a place that just stocks fans, new? I've tried ebay of course and pchub.com, plus various others (laptopfans.co.uk etc.)

This laptop being cheap isn't well supported, if at all with most components / assemblies being second hand from stripped laptops.

Sure sucks buying a 500 laptop and 2 years later i'm facing a burnout. What about contacting Compaq, but I'm sure they will give me a silly price!

Hi all. Well I am having problems with turning on my Toshiba satellite c50-a-19t laptop. The night before there was a smell coming from the fan so I turned it off. I put it on charge in the morning and when it was fully charged I went to use it. The white light on the front goes on for a sec and then goes straight off and the laptop don't power up. Any ideas guys ???

Sounds as though it may have over heated and something may have shorted out. you will need to have it looked at your local repair shop.

I got a used Tiny A440 P3 1Ghz laptop that i bought off eBay for 420 2yrs ago, it come with Win ME and then i upgraded to Win XP. Over the past 6 months its had problems with it overheating / blue screen failures after about a hr of use. It would blue screen up (ie halt) then reset itself and fail to start up on the reset. Ive opened it up, and the fan on the chip is working as advertised, but not all the time. I have considered taking the fan appart to see if i can hard wire it so its on when the laptop is on.

Does anyone know any places that can take a look at this, or is it worth selling it on eBay for 200 or something. Its the DVD drive version. Parts are not going to be common, so im unsure.

Ive considered some kind of extra fan to blow into the cooling duct, but i think its a bit excessive.

Apart from moving to the south pole, im stuck for idea's..

A:Laptop problems / help.?

Many laptops control the fan and only run it when it's necessary for cooling. It could be something totally unrelated to the fan operation...

I have a Toshiba laptop running Win XP. All of sudden I can't communicate with Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, or plain Explorer. I can't open the Control Panel either. It just hangs up when attempting to use these programs. I scanned the HD, ran Virus checkers, Spybot, etc. and no problems.
I can load programs like Word, Excel, Nero, etc. I can dial up to the internet and use Firefox but not I.E.
I tried to do a Restore to an earlier point and it won't allow me to do that in either Safe mode or thru Accessories! The computer bogs down and basically comes to a halt. Even when trying to shut it down I get many windows of items trying to close and eventually it does shut down.
It appears there is a problem within Win XP where there are files that are corrupted but I don't know how to correct without completely doing a wipe of the HD and reload WinXP.
I tried to reinstall Win XP but it said there was a later version on the computer and wouldn't let me install it.
Any suggestions as to what I should do or how to proceed from here?
Your help would be most appreciated.

My laptop has been having problems for a few months but now it isn't working at all. When I got my laptop it came with Windows 7 and worked fine for about a year, but then it started having problems. One day when I started up my computer it would stop on a black screen just before the login screen. After many attempts at restarting it and selecting different choices for booting such as using last known good configuration, safe mode, etc I was finally able to log in, however, shortly after the computer froze and I continued to have the same problem.

I eventually used my windows 7 disk to format my harddrive and reinstall windows 7. After that it worked fine for a few weeks until the same thing started happening again. After a while of trying to fix it I was able to get it working using the windows 7 disk again, but not too long after it happened yet again. This time it would almost make it to the login screen, and the background of the login screen would be visible, but nothing would appear no longer how long I waited. After a while of trying to fix it, it stopped making it to that screen, and instead would freeze on a black screen again, however, this time if left at that screen for a minute or two my laptop would get a BSOD and crash.

So, after trying everything I could think of and searching the internet for solutions to my problem to no avail, I decided to use the windows 7 disk once more to format my harddrive and reinstall windows 7. When I tried to format my harddrive... Read more

A:My laptop is having a lot of problems now

Does anyone what I should do? I've tried installing ubuntu and windows 7 a few more times but I haven't been having much luck. Windows 7 still continues to show no harddrive most of the time, and when I can start the installation it fails after a minute or two. Ubuntu has been working better, one time I even almost finished the installation, but it still has failed every time as well. Also, assuming I am successful in installing ubuntu, would I be able to run many games with it or should I then try installing windows 7? I play a lot of games and just recently got a lot of new ones during the summer steam sale but I don't know what games can run on linux.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do? I've tried everything I can think of and my laptop only seems to be getting worse.

Alright my laptop has been having this problem where at boot svchost.exe took up 50% cpu
I tried fixing the problem by making norton delete all tracking cookies
Now it's like way worse
Svchost.exe sometimes does it
Then the .net framework service and when I try to end it just restarts I fixed that by just moving the file to another location
Then when I end svchost.exe the aero themes stop working, the wifi too
I also installed the latest windows update except sp1
And I do have a system restore point of where the svchost.exe process would go to 50% when starting up
What should I do know?

Ok so i have a laptop, it's an advent laptop with Vista as the OS. I've had problems with it since i bought it from my brother but now it's got to the point where i need to sort it out.

First off it used to turn itself off when every now and then, usually when i was watching a video. About a month ago it started doing it a lot more regularly, and shortly after that, everytime it happened i wouldn't be able to use my laptop because no matter what it would do it turned itself off. To solve this i used to use system restore (which allowed me to use it again).

Now it has happened again, but i can't use system restore because apparently i don't have any restore points created. In my efforts to try and fix the problem (or at least find out what's causing it) i came across "Full Destructive Restore".

NOTE: Works fine in "Safe Mode"

So my questions are:

Is there anyway of fixing this?
What is full destructive restore? Any alternatives?

A:Problems with my laptop

Hello Ali060 and welcome to TSF,

Press F8 immediately after the BIOS splashscreen.
This will open the advanced boot option menu.
If you load to Windows you need to restart and try again.
Select the option to Turn Off automatic restart.

Boot into Safe Mode and check C://Windows/Minidump for any .dmp files.

If you have any, follow the instructions in the following thread and attach the zipped files to your next reply.

In the interim, download the UBCD from the link in my signature and burn it to CD using a program like ImgBurn.
note: If you are burning the disc on a Windows 7 system, you just need to double click the .iso file to initiate the image burning process, no software necessary.

When the CD is burned, boot your laptop to the CD and select HDD from the menu, then select Diagnosis. Finally, select Drive Fitness Test (Hitachi) and let it load. When prompted select the ATA only option. Run the quick test and then the extended test.
Take note of the drive ID.
Post the Drive ID and the results of both tests.

A destructive restore is when the filesystem is wiped out and the Operating System is replaced. This is a last resort option.
