Preferred Solution: getting problems with my new hp laptop

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

for the past while now I have been having problems with the window on start up and my speakers on my laptop not working.

1-The problem started out with the speakers when I turned down the volume to nothing while playing a game and then I tried to turn it back up a few weeks later I got no sound out of the internal speakers. I tried all the options in the volume looking for anything muted with no results. I then tried to update the sound card drivers with the same results of no sound out of the internal speakers. I did try head phones as I was told by a friend to do so and I am able to hear sounds and music just fine.

2-After this first issue, I noticed that when starting my laptop I had a smaller then the normal screen when starting up, I also have this same size on my main screen. I have been able to change to a higher resolution to fill the entire screen but if I go any lower then the highest resolution I have a black boarder were the window should be.

I have upgraded to windows XP from windows ME erasing whatever information I could, hoping that a new operating program would solve this problem. But with my bad luck it hasn't changed. If you someone could help me resolve these problems I would be very grateful.

Thank you,

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

[Tuesday morning] I have additional information:

I now get the following errors:

Hi techguys,

I magine my delight - santa brought a new windows 7 laptop - a great sony FW series - and with windows 7 I expected great things but alas I am already frustrated;

Totally stunned to find it had no email softeware though - and hence now have to find my way through an upgrade maze fraught no doubt with the ususal ms ifs and buts that always seem to plague upgrades or data transfers involving ms products - it must be me! - LOL!

1. I use outlook 2003 and want to keep all my outlook emails on the new laptop too;

2 Is it easy to get outlook onto my new laptop? Presumably 2007?

3. Is it easy to import my existing emails from 2003 outlook on my old laptop to this 2007 outlook - assuming the latter can be loaded onto my new laptop.

I do not want microsoift windows mail live - as I am nervous about keeping my email online.

Any help with achieving the outcome desired is much appreciated,

many thanks,

1. Outlook stores everything in the .pst file, so you can copy this from the old installation to the new one.

2. 2003 will work on W7, upgrade to 07 if you wish.

I just bought a brand new hp laptop and sometimes when I start it up aftering being off a black screen pops up saying that there is no bootable device. It doesn't let me do anything so I have no choice but to manualy turn it off. When it comes back on it is totally fine.

I've also being having another problem which started today and has happened multiple times. I will be online or my laptop will just be sitting there and the screen goes black for a second or two. It will then come back on and say something like the screen failed but it was restored.

What should I do? I just bought it a week ago. Should I trade it in for another one or is there a cheap (preferrably free) easy fix? Please help.

If you need more info just ask.

Hey everybody,

I fixing a computer for a friend and i have just been stumped about it. It is a Gateway Laptop that has Vista. I know the major problem is that the computer will not start up when i hit the power button. It will turn on and you can hear the fans going but then it all stops and nothing happens. The screen stays blank and it doesnt even get to the Gateway start up screen. After awhile i just power it down by holding the power button. the weird thing is that sometimes it will start up just fine and get to windows explorer and you think that everything is fixed but then it will freeze up on you and you must power it down starting the start up problems up again. i have made it through a couple of virus scans and took all the viruses that it had on it and i thought that that would take care of it but it didnt. it also has the problems of some of the keys on the keyboard dont work anymore and the touchpad doesnt work at all. i keep trying to install the drivers for those again but it keeps freezing. any ideas??

I have an HP Pavilion zv6130 that seems unstable. It gets lots of messages when shutting down from Microsoft about encountering errors and wants me to send reports to them.

I first had problems after a difficult time installing Native Instruments--Akoustik Piano.

Ever since I have had problems with "shut downs" error messages with programs like Avira and Avast virus checkers.
Is there a standard set of tests that I can run this HP through that will help me find the problem?

My laptop has been having problems for a few months but now it isn't working at all. When I got my laptop it came with Windows 7 and worked fine for about a year, but then it started having problems. One day when I started up my computer it would stop on a black screen just before the login screen. After many attempts at restarting it and selecting different choices for booting such as using last known good configuration, safe mode, etc I was finally able to log in, however, shortly after the computer froze and I continued to have the same problem.

I eventually used my windows 7 disk to format my harddrive and reinstall windows 7. After that it worked fine for a few weeks until the same thing started happening again. After a while of trying to fix it I was able to get it working using the windows 7 disk again, but not too long after it happened yet again. This time it would almost make it to the login screen, and the background of the login screen would be visible, but nothing would appear no longer how long I waited. After a while of trying to fix it, it stopped making it to that screen, and instead would freeze on a black screen again, however, this time if left at that screen for a minute or two my laptop would get a BSOD and crash.

So, after trying everything I could think of and searching the internet for solutions to my problem to no avail, I decided to use the windows 7 disk once more to format my harddrive and reinstall windows 7. When I tried to format my harddrive... Read more

A:My laptop is having a lot of problems now

Does anyone what I should do? I've tried installing ubuntu and windows 7 a few more times but I haven't been having much luck. Windows 7 still continues to show no harddrive most of the time, and when I can start the installation it fails after a minute or two. Ubuntu has been working better, one time I even almost finished the installation, but it still has failed every time as well. Also, assuming I am successful in installing ubuntu, would I be able to run many games with it or should I then try installing windows 7? I play a lot of games and just recently got a lot of new ones during the summer steam sale but I don't know what games can run on linux.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do? I've tried everything I can think of and my laptop only seems to be getting worse.

First of all, hello to everyone here. This is my first post on these forums, but I have been avidly reading the fabulous tips and info provided here. I am planning on getting a new PC in January with Vista on it, but for now, the problem I am having is on a friends' laptop, and he is requesting my assistance in fixing it.

When trying to load Internet Explorer (IE7), the 'spinning blue circle' pointer shows for a few seconds, then stops, and no IE window opens. It would appear that IE failed to load, but gave no error message.

On checking the task manager, however, I found that there were 40-50 iexplore.exe processes running. I promptly ended every iexplore.exe task, and tried again, only to have the same result, and 1 iexplore.exe process showing in task manager.

I decided to install IE8 Beta, to see if this cured the problem, and following the necessary reboot, IE actually loaded and appeared to work fine. I thought the problem was fixed, but an hour later, my friend phoned to say he was having the same problem again. He had turned on his laptop (1-month old Dell), and tried to load IE without success. He looked in Task Manager and found 6 iexplore.exe processes running. He said he had tried to load IE twice since turning his laptop on, not 6 times.

It seems that something is trying to load IE repeatedly, but I am unable to figure out what or why. I could not find anything odd in the startup programs, and a spyware/virus check was negative.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2 and 1. I purchased it about 6 months ago. Off the bat, I've been having some random issues with it.
1) Sometimes while it's charging, I will go back to try and use it, but the laptop has shut down on its own. The charging light with start blinking repeatedly yellow and white and I have to hold down the power button for several seconds so it stops. Then after a few minutes, I will turn it back on and when I do, the wifi isn't detected and there's no way to get my internet to work so yet again, I have to restart it a second time and then the wifi is fine. There is no rhyme or reason to this happening. It happens randomly. It's not the charger itself or any loose connection, I've looked into that. It's also not the laptop dying because when this occurs, it's usually charged 40+%.
2) The laptop overheats very quickly, especially when charging. There isn't just the typical fan noise you hear when your laptop is trying to cool off, but it's a buzzing sound that doesn't seem right. The other night when I was playing a game, my computer crashed and I got the blue screen and then it restarted. I don't know if it crashed because it was too much for my laptop to handle, although it was running fine (no freezing/lagging), or if the program itself caused it to crash. Never had the blue screen before, quite bothersome as this laptop is still new.
3) There will be a random beeping nose that happens every so often. Agai... Read more

Hi, everyone, i have an issue with a laptop. I got it with the knowledge that its slow and i was too clean it up for my friend.I thought i would be an easy install of a few programs and a few scans and done. But, that is not the case! He used the laptop for gaming and surfing the net, music/video downloads and school assignments. His father also used it for business. When i open IE its loads slow, pictures wouldnt load on websites and then i was googling on it for programs. I found out a major problem, when i would search for stuff and then click on the website, instead of the page opening it would open a type of go.google page and then redirect to an advertisement and/or search page. I cant do anything on the internet cause it always happens. I have never seen this kind of problem. I have worked with Antivirus 2009 blocks and easily fixed it but NOTHING like this.I have scanned with NOD 32(Up-to-date) numerous times, CCleaner and a few other small programs i usually use. I cleaned up over 10 viruses, and i thought it would work fine! WRONG! Same problem!I search the Add/Remove utility and found about 4 malware(i.e) programs on the laptop. I uninstalled 2 successfully. Command(first program) it didnt show the size and when i tryed uninstalling it it failed to do so. Also there was a program called Network Monitor same problem except it showed it was 0.9mb in size and there was a folder with that name in the C Drive but it was empty. Hello everybody!

So, for the introduction...
I've got an Acer Aspire 6530G with Vista 32 Home ed. OS; AMD Turion x2 64, ATI Radeon 3650, Realtek HD Audio and 3 gb RAM.

And I've been experiencing three problems with it overall - all of them are connected with CPU usage and the heat, and if somebody helped me, I'd be very grateful.

SO. The 1st problem:

I had already solved one problem with my processor - my laptop was telling me all the time that I've got a single core processor(with a very high temperature!!) and I had to unlock the second core. I thought - I enabled the second core, okay, it's gonna be better..but nothing. My Acer's CPU temperature is 83?C when I am doing completely NOTHING.(just this window with Chrome opened and MSN.)
I tried to set the power mode, to change it, but nothing helped. I have got a cooling pad. No help. I also blew the air inside and even opened my acer - there was no dust at all(only a LITTLE on the fan.) I disabled every software that switches on automatically. I've installed new ATI and Realtek drivers. Manufacturers won't help me.
My laptop is set on a cooling pad on a wooden table.So...?! Ien understand that I won't be able to play the newest games on my laptop, but still, I think that swtiching off when playing a 5/6-year-old game is quite...

The 2nd problem:

When I watch some videos and have a call on Skype, my CPU runs completely wild, goes to 100% usage and it has a problem with audiod... Read more

Hi All,

My Laptop (Compaq Presario V5000 Intel 1.4 Celeron,) has been having issues with the fan recently. I think its on its last legs as its making a nasty whirring sound when it gets warm. I've had the laptop apart, got a number/manufacturer of the fan but couldn't test it for a dead spot on the motor, I had no multimeter handy. The space between the fan and the heatsink was full of dust. Cleared all of that and its not on all the time now, making a nasty noise, its gone back to its old 'new state' of only powering up per cpu or to cool down on idle. I'm having a real problem sourcing a fan, all I can get hold of is the complete assembly (cover/subassembly) second hand. Of course if its second hand and they are poor motors it won't last long. Does anyone know a place that just stocks fans, new? I've tried ebay of course and pchub.com, plus various others (laptopfans.co.uk etc.)

This laptop being cheap isn't well supported, if at all with most components / assemblies being second hand from stripped laptops.

Sure sucks buying a 500 laptop and 2 years later i'm facing a burnout. What about contacting Compaq, but I'm sure they will give me a silly price!

The dvd rom in my pc is no longer working & I'm trying to figure out how to fix it.

I have an Acer Aspire 5520 & I did a complete restore to factory settings last night, and all worked well until about 3 hours ago. I did a system restore & its still not working.

It is showing up in device manager & even in my computer, but its like its just dead.

At one point I put pressure on the drive pushing it in & it responded, but that only lasted for one disk.

I was wondering if maybe the drive has come out of the connection a bit at the back, and if it has, is it easy to get in there and fix it myself. (I have built desktop pcs before but have only just replaced RAM on this laptop.

Also if it sounds like the drive has died on me, is it easy for me to replace? I am only on the disability pension & can't afford to put it in at a pc shop & be ripped off.

Does anyone know of a good site that will help me through the process of replacing the drive?

The specs are:
AMD Turion 64 x 2 mobile technology TL-64 2.20GHz
32-bit OS
Windows Vista Home Premium
Nvida gforce 8600M GS
15.4'' monitor
220 GB HDD

I know this all sounds pretty dicky but its driving me crazy.

Thanks heaps

I just bought a new laptop and can't install my Motorola cable modem software.

Dell Inspiron 1545
Windows 7
2.2 GHz dual core

I tried to install the USB cable modem software (ethernet doesn't work - lightning strike fried it). I followed the directions on the install CD. When it came to the "checking system requirements" section, it said I didn't have the 35MB RAM needed. I checked the laptop specs and it said I had 1.9GB available. I went ahead and selected continue with the install anyway. And it says the modem can't connect to the internet. Is there a fix for this?

Alright my laptop has been having this problem where at boot svchost.exe took up 50% cpu
I tried fixing the problem by making norton delete all tracking cookies
Now it's like way worse
Svchost.exe sometimes does it
Then the .net framework service and when I try to end it just restarts I fixed that by just moving the file to another location
Then when I end svchost.exe the aero themes stop working, the wifi too
I also installed the latest windows update except sp1
And I do have a system restore point of where the svchost.exe process would go to 50% when starting up
What should I do know?

It's been a very long time since I posted here...Been extremely busy.

My question is this: I have a laptop with the XP OS. XP Home Edition. When I connect to the internet (Dial-up) over it, it'll stay connected for roughly 2.5 minutes. Then it disconnects. Or, if it stays connected more than that, it'll disconnect when you download something. A program, a webpage, anything. Any idea as to how to fix it? Please advise.

you could have static on the line, unplug any other phones connected and see if it still does it
we had a problem here with dialup where every so often the phone would check the line in the background causing the internet to disconnect, also my security system would phone home at midnight and cause a disconnection

I'm not sure this is in the right place since I don't know if I have a software problem or it's with the laptop itself but here goes....

Unfortunately, my father passed away recently and I now have his laptop that I know he's used successfully prior to his passing but I can't get it to work at all.

As soon as I turn the laptop on, I get this:

Intel (R) Boot Agent FE v4.1.10
Copyright (C) 1997-2003, Intel Corporation

PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F:Exiting Intel Boot Agen.
Insert systemm disk in drive.
Press any key when ready.
I assume part of the problem is that I have no disk to insert. The only thing I can find is a Toshiba Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD Satellite A45 Series and that doesn't help at all.

Any hope at all for me? The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A45-S150

I can totally see my father going through and erasing things on the laptop before he died but he would have at least left it in working condition for me.

Thanks in advance!

alright, so basically my friends lap top was all screwed: spyware, viruses, you know the works. so i offered to reformat it for her, it was running vista at the time and she told me she didn't like vista.

so i used a Windows XP Pro disc to reformat her laptop. everything went well up until it got to the windows set up mode. the lap top completely restarted went back to the windows set up and gave me these two errors.

"A write operation was attempted to a volume after it was dismounted"

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."

both the errors flash real quick and the laptop restarts again, and it just continues to do this. Any ideas on how to fix this?

also, her power is bit faulty she told me, so i'm thinking that MIGHT be one of the problems.

thanks in advance for any help. it's very much appreciated.

I'm running Vista on my HP laptop.

Recently I've come across some problems using both Safari and IE8 when downloading. Usually when I download .rar files I can open them through the download window that pops up, showing me the size and time remaining on my downloads.

Lately when I have been using this method, my files go missing. I go to open them and it says they cannot be opened because they have been moved. Searching for them in Windows Explorer never brings up any results either.

Also, I have a LG VX9900 (enV2) phone which I typically connect to my laptop via USB. About the same time the downloading problem occurred, my laptop no longer picks up my phone. I cannot install the drivers again because I can't open any of my downloaded files.

Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I have tried running full scans with Kaspersky but they stall out when it scans \Device\CdRom3

A:Having problems getting on my Laptop

Off hand I can say there's a few things you can try, but they're all relatively complicated. I'll try to locate them though.

If this is a computer issued by your company, ask IT to reset your password.

My mum received a laptop (Windows XP) from her workplace which she has been allowed to keep. We do not have administrative rights for some things like deleting a software, opening in safe mode etc.

The laptop has recently contracted a major virus. We cannot open in safe mode to remove the virus as we do not know the password that the administrator used.

The administrator has since left the workplace.

The only other option is to re-install the laptop using the Windows XP CD_ROM that got when I brought my computer but i cannot find it.

I really need somebody's help as to what to do next.

If we upgrade to Vista will that get rid of the virus? Will it be like a new installation?

A:Laptop problems

if you upgrade to vista then yes it should get rid of the virus, as long as you delete the old partition and the format a new one(this should have been done anyway by the company as it is illeagal to have a companys data).

Wondering if anyone can help...
We have a laptop connected to our network, for months now it has not worked, it worked fine previously.

It loads up windows fine, however when we try to get access to the server it just says "The computer or share name could not be found make sure you typed it correctly and try again"

The network path name is correct, and no-one has messed about with the settings or network card.

Perhaps someone has clicked on undock pc instead of shut down? The laptop has a box that click to the back of the main unit, would this mess up the network connection.

I have tried to map the network drive again (as the path seems to have disappeared) and it just says the same thing as I type in my second paragraph.

Can anyone help?

A:Problems with Win XP on HP laptop

Lets start with Running the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows XP disk

First problem: My laptop turns off when at 40% pretty much. Not sure if it is a virus or an internal problem. Not sure if I successfully recalibrated my laptop. I am considering resetting and flushing out everything to see if it will work. For now, I just plug in my charger to keep it from turning off.

Second problem: The charging seems to be funky. Once in a while, the laptop will stop charging and then start again without unplugging the charger.

white - full percentage
red - charging

On screen, the battery is not fully charged, when the charge disconnects, the laptop has a white light while the charger is still charging. When it reconnects, the laptop has a red light. The charger itself has some bumps on the wire, but I think it should still work fine.

Before any of these things have been happening, my friend installed a hardware update software, but I don't think that is that problem.

I did drop my laptop from a small height. Probably 3-4 inches? The screen was not cracked, nothing damaged on the laptop. I'm guessing the internal system messed up somehow? I should get it fixed at an electronic store if it gets hazardous or annoying. Some have said to buy a new battery and/or charger, but I don't want to buy stuff unless it really is needed. Tell me what you guys think.

When my laptop thinks its full, it disconnects, but when I wait a few seconds and reconnect the charger, it'll start charging again. Any solutions?

Hi there,

What is the brand and model of your laptop may I ask? Laptop are surely delicate and even a slight drop can cause internal hardware issues.

One suggestion I have is to try a spare charger that's compatible with your laptop and see if the same issue happens.

How old is this laptop may I ask?

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen....ETC (more writing)
anyone have this problem or know what's up?
Thanks in advance

Recently, I had my hard drive changed because the old one was bad. So a friend helped me to transfer my files to the new hard drive which has a higher capacity. Anytime I try to do the windows update and restart my system after installing the updates, my laptop will be stuck at windows logo and the only way to get out of it is to do a system restore. Sometimes my laptop doesn't shut down and it won't be able to sleep. What can I do? OS is Windows 8

My HP g6 series i3 laptop (upon which I am typing) has been very poorly for some weeks.

The main problem is that I cannot install many programs. For instance if I try to install an updated version of the (excellent!) audio program Reaper, I get the error message "Cannot Initialize Plugins Directory". I tried to install a tool called "Unlocker" but got the same error.
Earlier today my internet was not working "Not connected to a Network" I tried Troubleshooter and, for the first time ever THAT threw up an error and would not work.

I have cleaned out temp files, run sfc /scannow all to no avail. To add to my pain the DVD drive only works as an when it wants to! I can run the new, paid for kosher Win7/64 Home P disc to to an install but not boot from it to run Repair. I have put the W7 disc on a USB stick but that won't boot into an repair mode either.
I am fairly well used to running Repair for XP but don't really know how it goes for Win 7!

I am prepared to do a full format and install if that is the last resort but I would rather not.

Cheers all,

Hi. When i start my laptop up windows error recovery comes on and I choose to start windows normally. It goes into disk checking and finds an error that begins 113/volume/system32/mscoree.dll. Windows starts, but with the old, grey toolbar of the old Windows.

An error then comes up saying c:\windows\systemre\mscoree.dll is either not designed ti run on Windows or contains an error. Try installing program again using the original installation media or contact your system administration.

Then an other one comes up saying BBC IPlayer Desktop BBC IPlayer dekstop.exe - corrupt file. The file or directory c:user\appdata\roaming\macromedia,com\support\flashplayers is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility.
