Why can't I use my personal email to sign up for a Microsoft account?

Q: Why can't I use my personal email to sign up for a Microsoft account?

I have a personal email address ([email protected], for example) which I would like to use for my Microsoft account. When I try to do this I get errors similar to:

"You can't use @stuff.me in your Microsoft account email address. Please try a different email address."

depending on which site I'm trying to do this on (xbox.com, microsoft.com, etc.). Normally I really wouldn't have a problem with Microsoft doing it's own thing, but if I'm supposed to use this account on my personal computer now (with Windows 8 just over the
horizon), why am I not allowed to use the email that I want to use?

The better question is, how do I get around this? I've noticed restrictions and questions are different depending on which Microsoft site you try to create your account on. Is there a way to make an account using my personal email? Or a way to make my personal
email the primary one after creating the account?

Thanks

(Before anyone asks, I'm using a gmail account to post this.)

Preferred Solution: Why can't I use my personal email to sign up for a Microsoft account?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9879. I have had an ongoing problem that I cannot resolve with Microsoft or anyone else up to now. I always receive "your account has been disabled due to too many invalid login attempts..."

I have tried to reset my Microsoft Account a thousand times. I am always denied, even though I have confirmation that my password has been changed. I have used at least three different email addresses for my Microsoft Account. I cannot sign in.

I see a popup at startup that OneDrive has been detected. I cannot login to OneDrive due to the problem I've outlined above.

At the least, I would like to disable OneDrive, but cannot find a way.

While browsing the Microsoft Technet forums, I noticed I am not the only one having this problem. If I try to ask Microsoft Online Technical Support, I am merely brought back to the Microsoft Account login screen.

Can anyone help?

I currently do not sign in to Win 8 with a Microsoft account. What are the advantages/disadvantages of signing in with a Microsoft account?

Thanks

EDIT:
Actually to clarify this, I do know what the advantages of signing in with MS account are. So I guess what I am asking here is what are the downsides? Any privacy issues perhaps?

A:Sign in with Microsoft account?

I will say the major problem will be if you use your Hotmail account and you have a non secure password and someone get it and change the password of your Hotmail account, blocking your access to your PC, Tablet and Phone. For sure I will create another regular account with admin rights just in case.

Hello, I'm running windows 10 on an older office computer. I recently had some issues with missing OS files when a graphics card went (Took half the OS with it). So I have erased my Pc, and re-downloaded windows with a new graphics card.

All has been fine for a few months till now. I restarted my Pc to get this message"Sign in so you don't miss out" "You need to sign in to your Microsoft account so you can send your parent requests when you want more screen time or need permission for certain apps and sites" (My account is in a family with my Dad's, it was originally labeled as a 'kids' account when we created it for an Xbox 1. There are no restrictive settings on it. It is the only account on this Pc and is an Admin account).

No big deal I thought, so I hit sign in. Then I got this lovely error message: "Can't sign in with a Microsoft account" "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information. contact your system administrator" "0x800704ec". I went through all group policy settings and they are all set to "Not Configured"

I would ignore all this, but the "Sign in so you don't miss out" window is persistent and when closed or minimized opens again in a few seconds or when your open/run a new program. This is VERY annoying when gaming... If you need computer specs to help I can send them, I haven't included them because this seems to be an error with... Read more

A:Can't sign in with a Microsoft account

Did you do a full clean install? It sounds like you didn't if it came from a company. Group Policy is usually enabled/deployed by companies.

You would need to redo to the Windows OS installation again. Look at the sticky thread in this forum (link here) to complete a clean install.

Hello Chito, and welcome to Ten Forums.

First, double check to make sure that the new email address is the primary alias for your Microsoft account.

Restart the computer. If the new address doesn't show, then switch to a local account, then switch back to your Microsoft account to toggle it.

I'm getting crazy.
I cannot "sign in" to my Microsoft account ([email protected]) from the programs and the store.
For example, if I open Word 2013, and if I try to sign in I can input my email, then my password. Then I don't receive any message but I neither sign in too.
Same thing for other programs that require to sign in (SkyDrive, Exce, OneNote...).
Same thing for the Windows Store.

The account credential are ok and I can sign in to my account from, say, a browser. I can also check my email with my email client program.

The crazy thing is that sometimes (sporadically) the "sign in" attempt succeeds and I can sign also from within those programs in (as I should do always).

I don't want to re-install W8 or make a refresh. I've already done that and I lost all my program settings (about 60 programs). It took a whole day to restore my system completely but the problem wasn't solved.

I'm using a local account (with admin privileges) with no password set.
If I try to change my user account type and switch to a microsoft account I can insert the microsoft account and the password, but at the last stage ("You have almost finished changing your account...") after I press the "Finish" button, I receive a "very nice" error message:"We are sorry but something went wrong. Your account wasn't changed to this Microsoft account.

You don't need to close your account. Just create another strong password. It doesn't even need to be something you could easily remember. Write it down or use LastPass or something so that you don't have to spend all day typing it in / remembering it.

Hello everyone!

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum,,but here is my concern. I bought a new dell laptop with 8.1 installed. I originally started this PC sign in process with my Hotmail account password. I do not want to sign in with my microsoft account every time, just to access my computer. I don't even know what my password is,,i use a password manager with 20 digits. I don't want to have to access another device to see what that password is every time i sign onto my laptop.

Ideally, if windows is trying to emulate the touch market as well as pc,,i would want the same login as my tablet and have a pattern password.

Any suggestions?? Thank you

When I first setup my PC I used my MS account to login. The account name was an email address from cox.net. However shortly thereafter I changed to a local account. A few months ago I changed the account name to a Gmail address in anticipation of changing my internet provider but I've continued using a local account to login to windows, I've never used the Gmail login name.

Today I wanted to look at the extensions that were available for Edge, so I needed to sign into the Store but the login box was prepopulated with the old account name from cox.net. I assume that I should go to setting, select Email & App Accounts and select the add an account button and add the MS account that uses my Gmail name, correct?

After I do then then how can a delete the old, inactive account with the cox.net user name?

I think my error is confusing the account name which may or may not be an email address with the actual email address used for communication about the account, correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to add the Gmail address as an alias to your Microsoft account.

My original email address has been hacked into and I can't access my Microsoft account due to a suspect that has either changed my password, or deleted my account. I'm looking for an alternative to change the email address for my Microsoft account as I currently have a new email address in use. In hindsight, I've tried the local switch thing and created a whole new user but I can't transfer applications across to my current email address/Microsoft account as the password for the previous Microsoft account is corrupted - no access. Sorry if I repeat myself but I've tried other forums and help-sites but they still don't apply to my significant needs.

If there is any way I can change my Microsoft account's email address without signing in/placing in password, please comment below.

Cheers.

Just got a laptop with Windows 8. When I went through setup, I went ahead and entered a Hotmail address to sign in with that. Now, I regret doing so and want to get rid of it and not have to use an account or password to get onto my computer. There are a few reasons I want to stop having to sign in using an account, and none of the advantages are of interest to me (the syncing, etc).

I searched around Windows Help and googled for answers of how to get rid of the need to sign in with an account and just be able to turn the dang computer on, but came up empty. Would sure appreciate knowing how.

Hey,

I had a problem earlier with certain folders not opening. I've now found out that it's the microsoft account sign-in assistant service. When it is enabled, I can't access the folders (D:\ drive and Music folder on my desktop) and Windows store and games are unable to log in, they just remain at the loading screen forever. When I disable it, the folders work but the store and games apps say "Can't sign in, try again later".

So I'm stuck here with no access to the store or any of my apps that require a log-in.

Is there a way to fix the sign-in assistant without doing a refresh? I've done a refresh a few months ago and I'm not willing to go through it again (hundreds of programs and games installed already).

Please advise!

The 'recent credentials sign in' message popped up in my laptop action centre.
Nothing had been changed.
So I signed into my Ms Account to the credential section.
The email address in the drop down list was not current. The address was changed Jan 2015 and gmail has been in use on the laptop since that date. So my choice was to click on 'nothing applies' and do the next steps.
The sign in required an alternate email address. Fortunately I have one handy. This security routine has a 30 day wait period.
Now I have found the tutorial 37536 illustrating deleting extra accounts but I don't think I can do this because the security section is not available for 30 days. I had no idea this control panel item was available but only the tutorial informed what could be done with this data.
It is amazing that 1.5 yr has gone by and the old email is still in there as a credential. I suppose after 30 days I can delete the hurontel address. I found it odd that the old email address was on the drop down list for a contact. Its a dead end address.
Now that I have made the credential 'visit' can I assume the hurontel address is gone from MS records and I can delete it in the control panel credential section and not have to sign back into the MSAccount credential section because the correct address is listed?

A:Your Microsoft account needs you to sign in again-recent credentials

Hello Rose,

If you have the correct email address showing for your account in Settings -> Accounts -> Your info, then you should be fine to delete the credential for the hurontel address.

what are the pro and cons of signing in to windows using microsoft account

A:Pro & Cons of Sign in to Windows 8 using Microsoft account

I don't know of any real cons,,,,

The Pro's are numerous....

Although this really only works in IE.....
Access to OneDrive without having to log in
Access to your Address book, Outlook Online and numerous other Office On-line apps without having to log in.

System stuff....

Sync Settings and Passwords, themes (colors, backgrounds, etc,) and other things (IE Favorits and Tabs) across devices.
App Settings, such as a list of apps you have installed from the store.
So, say you install Solitaire on your Laptop when you are somewhere else
You come home and want it on your Desktop (or other device)
Log in, and the icon will be there,, click it and it will install without you having to search for it.
Some App settings will transfer across devices as well.

If you use Office 2013, it will stay logged in and you can sync docs, and OneNote across devices as well.

There might even be other stuff I am not mentioning.

But soon, as Universal Apps gain momentum and
now that MS has acquired GreenButton and they will incorporate that tech into Azure
We will see even more apps and data for MS Devices that will sync Across Devices (WP, xBox, Desktop, Tablet, Laptop).

These next couple of years are going to be pretty exciting.
I am actually on board with what MS is doing right now. I was against cloud services,, but for now,, things are fine.
I would recommend encrypting financial and personal data if you are going to store on OneDrive, DropBox, etc. as in any cl... Read more

Hi - I hope this is the right place for this, I did not see a Windows 8 Phone forum...

I have an HTC PMM23300 phone on TMobile. I've been trying for weeks to get it to sign in to my Microsoft account. But whenever I try, it tells me "Can't Connect. We're having a problem signing in. Make sure you have good reception. If you do, the problem may be on the other end. Wait a little while and try again."

Well... I've certainly tried waiting. I've tried resetting the phone. I've tried resetting the phone to factory settings in case it is in a "bad state" as Microsoft suggests... but still no go. It does it on WiFi and on cell data.

Anyone have any suggestions to help? I like the phone, but I'm ready to get rid of it and go back to an iPhone... things shouldn't be this hard.

Hello, I'm using Windows 10 Pro version 64 bit and recently I'm aware that my taskbar and start menu doesn't work and I tired creating a new local account and it solve my problems. But now I have another question to ask about this, first I cannot sign into my Microsoft account at the Settings > Accounts. After typing in my email and password, Windows ask for old password and so I provided the password yet it says "Oops something went wrong. Whatever happened it was probably our fault."

Although creating an account does fix it , I was wondering since I created an account, I need to copy all my stuff like my desktop icons and so on to another account right? All these files wont be sync correct? So data like "AppData" , Itunes Music and so on will not be at the new account if I didn't transfer them to another account?

Is there any way to transfer all data to another account or is there any fixes for the taskbar and start menu?
I tried DISM and sfc /scannow , everything is not working, it has error saying iIndows Resource Protection c could not perform the requested operation.

Thanks in advance.

Be right, wrong or indifferent, I set my PC up to not require a logon. Then one morning when I fired up the PC, all of sudden I had a Microsoft Logon screen requiring a password. I did have an old Passport account, but never really used it, obviously MS hadn't forgotten. My personal PC user account had been completely removed and the only user account was now the Passport account. I know for a fact it was done without my knowledge or concurrence. Any idea how this could occur? Research indicated I could set up a local account and then remove the MS account. However, setting up a local account seems to require the use of a email (Preferably MS, of course) account and password, which I do not want to do. Any suggestions?

So it might seem you're not the only one.

Could you look at your Update History and see if the date of an update corresponds to when your password prompt first appeared?

I recently set up an account with my school's email system. When I try to log in, it lets me log in to the general area, and then when i try to access my inbox, i'm directed to sign into windows live. I hate windows live, I want it to die in a fire, I don't have an account with windows live, and so I can't access my school email. I have uninstalled everything windows live-related, and have double checked that I didn't tell my school email account to open in a pop server (since you need to be able to access the email account to set it up, i'm sure I haven't done that). I changed my defaults in firefox to open emails with gmail, but it still goes to windows live. Any ideas?

A:email account defaults to windows live sign in

Contacting your school IT section to access your mail would be the go, as they can only give you access if you are allowed to have access remotely, then they will set it up for you, IF you have permissions to do so.

If you are talking about a computer at the school that is assigned to you, then you still need to contact them, to sort this.

I agree with you about Windows Live Mail though but that is just my personal opinion.

Hello all,

I recently upgraded my mother's computer to 8.1 from 8. I'm a tech that's been working on PCs a long time and this one has me puzzled. And Microsoft Tier 2 Phone Support had no clue. I called them and they sent me to the higher level and basically he couldn't figure it out.

After I upgraded I noticed that Windows Live Mail (her preferred email desktop application) wouldn't open saying it was out of memory. I did some research and I found out it was the sign in service not being started. Well I started it and of course it loaded like a champ.

But every time we close the app for very long at all, the service completely stops again. I've set the service to default startup (for that one it's Manual/Trigger Start) and that didn't make any difference. Also changing the user account between local and MS account made no difference. I believe I did try a new user entirely as well.

The computer is fine otherwise. I'm afraid I'm going to have to do a refresh but thought I'd ask if anyone has any other suggestions. It's the weirdest thing I've ever encountered. If a refresh fails and I have to do a reset, I'm not going to be happy. She's a bit stubborn and insists on Live Mail, and hates me having to constantly open up services.msc and turn it back on all the time.

Thanks,

Sorry if this has been answered before, I did have a search.

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and have installed Office 2010 which I also had on Vista, in Vista however my email *****@optusnet.com.au was part of personal folders, but now they are separate, I'd like not to see a separate menu for *****@optusnet.com.au but instead have all my emails under the Personal Folders menu, any ideas?

Hi!

When I started up my computer this morning I found that the desktop + personal settings had gone. Then I quickly discovered that my browser settings, history, bookmarks, email account settings, and all emails, etc on both Netscape and IExplorer were also missing. MS Outlook had also vanished. The keyboard setting changed as well - some special characters are at different places (@ is at shft + # is at shft 3, etc)

I have McAfee installed but the firewall (only the firewall) was switched off for an hour yesterday. I have scanned the computer but McAfee hasn't found anything.

Is it possible I have a virus/spyware running regardless of McAfee???

Can you please help!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance.

During the night my windows desktop with Win8.1 pre-release was update to Win8.1 release.
Of course it deleted my Favorites in IE & updated to IE11.
It also deleted all my contacts in Mail.

However when I logged into my other desktop using my MS account, it updated IE Favorites & Mail contacts to 0.

I had this info on my portable & put this info on a thumb drive.
SURPRISE there is no way to import or export this info into IE11 or Mail.

Is there something I missed on this procedure?

I was under the impression that I had control of my computer & not MS!

That "Old Fart" again

Tully

A:Using microsoft Email account to log-in

Hello Tully,

Your IE Favorites are stored in your C:\Users\(user-name)\Favorites folder. You could just copy and paste the backup of your Favorites into this folder to restore them.
Internet Explorer - Import and Export Favorites - Windows 7 Help Forums
The Mail and People apps work together, so if you added an Outlook.com or Exchange account, your contacts are automatically added to the People app. For all other accounts, you need to add the same email accounts to the People app to get your contacts, just like you did in the Mail app.

Mail App - Add an Account in Windows 8.1

People App Accounts - Add or Remove in Windows 8
Hope this helps,
Shawn

This has been extremely frustrating.
I want to get email notifications of security bulletins, updates, patches, etc.

https://microsoft.com/en-us/msrc/technical-security-notifications

When you click to sign up, you have to log in. You are UNABLE to use a work (O365 account I assume) account. How silly is this? This is for work purposes, and I want to use my work email address. Of course, if I create a Microsoft account that I'll never
use, I can sign up and get notifications going to essentially a black hole, but there has to be a way to do this, or an alternative

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
HM

Hi,

My friend's cheapo six year old computer died yesterday. Her son had an extra computer he's not using at the moment and he is giving it to her. It's running Windows 10, and when he set it up, he used his email and did that Microsoft account option.

Now, however, he wants to give that computer to her, but when she turns it on, she's going to see his emails on the email app, not hers. Is there a way to remove or change that Microsoft account? Can we change it to a "local" account, or at least change the email address? I am barely familiar with Windows 10, but I am pretty familiar with 8. However, I've never had an occasion to need to change the registered Microsoft account email or try to change it to a local account, so any suggestions would be welcome!

When I minimize Outlook 2007 into the bottom right hand side to my computer, and then roughly half an hour later I double click it to open it up, it opens up fine, but the same bubble giving me the same error message appears without fail every time:"Outlook is not responding. If you are using a Microsoft Exchange email account, you can cancel pending server requests by clicking the Outlook icon in the notifications area and then clicking Cancel Server Requests on the shortcut menu".Firstly, what is a Microsoft Exchange email account?Secondly, I must be using it, so how do I 'cancel it', and will it affect Outlook's performance if I do?Thirdly, where is the 'Outlook icon in the notifications areaOutlook icon in the notifications area'?Thank you!

Hey there! So I've seen many posts on this kind of topic but none that have had the exact same issue that I'm having or none with solutions that seem to work for me so I'm deciding to post it here.

I recently was forced to create a new user account on my Windows 10 PC since old one got corrupted. This new one is a local account/administrator. When going to the account settings I then go to the "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" option which works totally fine. I am asked to input the email of my Microsoft account and password. So far so good. After I do that I then encounter a screen that says "Sign in to this device using your Microsoft account". It asks me for my current Windows password one more time and says the next time I sign into windows I'll be using my Microsoft account password.
So I then enter my windows password and here is where the lovely screw up happens that says "Oops, something went wrong. Whatever happened, it was probably our fault. Please try again."

I've tried countless times and attempted to skip this page by clicking next and nothing. I can't use my Microsoft account at all on this computer it seems anymore. Anyone have some useful tips? I can post images of the entire process if needed in case something wasn't clear.

I'm having the same problem exactly! Any ideas anyone?

I just installed Windows 8 on my laptop to try it out. During the setup process I was asked to enter my Microsoft account details and as I do have files stored on Sky Drive I put in the same details. The problem is that the account I seem to have created refers to an old Hotmail address that I no longer use so all the contact links for example are very outdated. I see that it's not possible to change the email address on your Microsoft account.
Should I re-install W8 and set up a new Microsoft account, which means presumably no access to my Sky Drive files from that machine; or perhaps move all the files out (long process!). Or any better ideas?
I'm already not liking the way MS is trying to make me link into all its own stuff BTW, like Bing!

Or is it possible to create a local account in Windows 8.1 without adding an Microsoft Account on my Laptop, ?

I just discovered this scenario when my mother wants to have her own local account on my laptop, and I discovered that to be able to add another local account, it should have an email account

Please help guys, I am very new in Windows 8.1, I am just worried that someone is spying on me because he added an email address that I don't know, God Bless

I also attached a screenshot in my laptop, to help this problem to be solved, I hope someone can Identify if this local account already has an email address?

A:Windows 8.1 Microsoft Email Account Required

Hi David welcome to 8 Forums, You are using a local account otherwise it would show an Email address under your account name.

To add another local account, go to Other accounts and look on the bottom:

User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8
Is this what you mean?
