I do I select a folder with pictures to use as desktop background

Q: I do I select a folder with pictures to use as desktop background

First post for some help at work!
I need to configure a pc so that it uses a folder with pictures in it (folder is located in a network drive) to loop trough the background. I can select a folder and select al the pictures in it, but if someone else copies some more photo's to that folder, they don't come up on the desktop background. I first have to select these photo's before they are added to the loop.
Does anyone have an idea how to do this so that someone else can change the pictures in the folder(network drive) and windows background loops through al the photo's in that map without having to do anything?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Preferred Solution: I do I select a folder with pictures to use as desktop background

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I have Win7 64bit. I have a folder with 52 pictures at c:\wallpapers. I go to right click on desktop and choose Personalize. then I click on Desktop Background, my folder is not in the Picture location list so I click on Browse. The Browse For Folder box opens and I find the folder just mentioned and click on OK. And nothing. My pictures and / or folder do not show up. I tried a different folder, same results. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to import pictures from external device (in this case - android phone with PTP) and in the import dialog I've selected "import settings" and then I'm trying to change "Import images to" location, but when I click on Browse and select the same path I was using on windows 7 (on E: partition) I get error "You cannot import to this folder. Choose another location" which, frankly, doesn't make much sense. I've tried permissions and so forth and I can easily browse and save picture there, I'm the owner and all that. Why Pictures Importer complains and doesn't allow me to use this location? I don't want to import to %profile%/Pictures because it's small-ish system drive :|

A:Import pictures - can't select folder

Try creating the partition/drive you want as a Library - Nope - that didn't work, either.

I recently got this new computer, (the one listed in my specs) and of course, set my backgrounds. I wanted to make a slight change to the background settings, but when I open up the menu to do so (from the personalize menu, select desktop background) I get a blank menu with the loading message. This does not change, for as long as the window is open (checked it to ten minutes so far). When I select a location from the drop-down menu, it works fine, but when I use the browse button next to it, it does not.

I did move the location of the images it was using before opening that menu, but I have done that on other windows 7 computers and never gotten an error. I tried moving them back, same problem. I do not have my OS install disk, as it wasn't sent with the computer. I have not tried moving files into the folders the system uses yet, (the ones that seem to be working fine) but I am uncertain as to the reason for this error, so I'm iffy about doing so.

My main concern is: does this herald something bad, and if so, how do I avoid it?

It may because I instilled some software. after that, everytime I open the "display properties"-->>"desktop",my computer will read "My pictures"folder, and trying to load all the pictures in the "Background" list.which are almost 2GB pictures.
it is very slow, and my computer halted for a long time.

I searched google, only find someone want lock the list to other folder, not unlock it.

if anyone can help me, thanks a lot !

A:How to unlock Background list from My pictures folder?

abratross, It's a problem with XP and Microsoft never corrected it. A well known problem with XP is that images stored in My Pictures somehow get added to the list of Background Images. If it really bothers you make a new folder and name it something like Personal Pictures then move the ones in your My Pictures folder into the new folder and in the future store your new image files into the Personal Pictures folder and they won't show in the Background list.

Good morning to everybody;
My OS is W7 pro.
It's a couple of days that it is impossible to use any picture as desktop background image on the screen.
The only thing I have done before was the uninstalation of the "Offerbox" SW.
When I execute the procedure to personalize the screen and I select the desktop background, after having selected the file with the pictures I get the squares of the pictures without any image ( that is : the squares are empty).
If I look to the pictures with any picture viewer, the pictures are perfectly displyed.
Thanks in advanve for any help

I have saved quite a few pictures of some of the famous places in the world, and until recently I have used some of them to change the background on my desktop. But now, clicking on a picture to "Set as Desktop Background" has absolutely no effect. It does give me a fair number of plain coloured backgrounds, but that is obviously not what I'm looking for! Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm trying to correct a problem on my wife's laptop. My daughter borrowed it and when it was returned, the desktop background was black instead of the picture that was previously there. My daughter doesn't know what happened to cause the change in the background.

I cannot set the background to anything other than a solid color. No images show up in the window when you try to personalize the background with the sample pictures. When you "Browse", the sample picture filenames show up but the icons associated with the files all show the default windows icon. When you select any of the files, the background doesn't change.

I saw various posts on the internet that associate desktop background problems with wallpaper policy settings in the registry, but this doesn't seem to be the case here. I think that the software that decodes the image files is not working, because also when I attempt to view the picture files with Windows Photo Gallery I get the message "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. This file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery". The picture file files do open and display properly with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, with Paint, and with Firefox.

Any suggestions, clues, etc...?

A:Can't set desktop background or view pictures

Hi edknc,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Do you know when this problem began (presumably when it was borrowed)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began (before she borrowed it). Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I have put a series of pictures (in Picasa 3) together and have them showing as a desktop background slide show (through Personalization). The problem is that there are about 4 out of 30 pictures that won't display right-side up. That is, although they are right side up in Personalization and in Picasa 3, they are orientated either one step counter-clockwise, or one step clockwise. Even though I tried changing their orientation to "correct" for their wrong orientation, the pictures still showed with the wrong orientation. Is there any way I can get them to show correctly oriented?

A:Some pictures won't properly orient in desktop background?

Hi Flycaster.
Sounds quite weird. I'm not familiar with Picasa but many application have automatic orientation though rarely faulty.
Did you try viewing it using other application, just to see if it is oriented differently?

Not quite certain where to place this.

sometimes in the past 7-10 days when I go to change my computer's desktop background picture, I see only the Irfanview icon, not the picture.

I haven't updated Irfanview, I have the latest version.

No updates to my computer until today, so it couldn't be that.

Windows Explorer is set to Large Icons. I changed it to all the available sizes, still no picture, just the icon.

Just to make sure the pictures weren't refreshing. I found a folder with just 3 pngs. I did all of the icon sizes, no picture thumbnail shows.

What could be wrong and how do I fix it ?

Thank you.

I'm using Vista 32 Home Premium. While trying to select different backgrounds in the Control Panels/Personalization/Desktop Background dialog box, I select Windows Wallpaper from the drop down list. Every pictures available for selection show as the same generic graphic and not the actual pictures themselves.

The only way I can actually visually see what each individual picture is, is to select it and then view it as the desktop background. I cannot figure out how to view all available images as true thumbnails while they are still in the selection dialog box.

Can you please help me?

Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Vista Desktop Background - cannot view individual pictures

To change the visual effects, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.
Click the Visual Effects tab, and then use one of the following methods:
Click Adjust for best appearance to have Windows automatically adjust the settings for best appearance.
Click OK to apply changes and to close the dialog box

By default its already check but in case if its not check make sure all the options are check.

If you found that its already check and still the problem persist. Update your Graphic adapter.

I was going to upload a video of the problem to make it easier for you guys to understand but since i'm currently out of country for holiday I'll try my best to explain the problem in words. Basically my problem is when I right click on a wallpaper and select Set as desktop background. As normal it changes the wallpaper but also resets the folder back to the top. For example If I select the picture on the very bottom of the folder and set it as the desktop background, the folder will rest back all the way to the very top of the folder. It has been acting this way since I installed windows 8 but I didn't care to find a solution until now.I would be glad if anyone have a solution for this as it has been getting on my nerve for far too long. Kind a getting annoying when you're trying to find a good wallpaper and having to scroll all the way down to where I was lol.

Hi, I recently built a new computer with Windows 10, currently on version 1607. I have a large collection of desktop wallpapers in slideshow mode and frequently go through large folders of newly downloaded images to search for pics suitable for background images.

I was doing this recently but annoying found that whenever I was deep in the folder and clicked 'set as desktop background' it jumped back to the top of the folder. I looked around and saw a potential culprit was the setting automatically changing accent colors to match the background but that was never marked on. When the slideshow desktop background changes automatically and I'm working in a folder it doesn't jump or anything. I heard it might be something called auto-adjust in file explorer but I can't quite make heads or tails of it. I hear an option to turn it off should be under View in the context menu below hide file names but it isn't there.

So is there any way to stop the jumping to the top so I don't have to scroll down every time or is this an unfixable annoyance I'll just have to live with and adjust my habits accordingly? Thanks in advance.

I right-clicked a JPG photo file and then accidently selected "Set as desktop background". The entire folder containing many other pics was also moved to the "Desktop Background Directory" and I can't delete the pic files or the folder.

If my desktop background image is a slideshow from my picture folders, is there a way to open the folder holding the particular picture from the desktop? I ask because sometimes a picture will pop up, and I'm not sure what folder it came from. It seems like in older windows versions you could right click on the desktop and select "open folder" or something and be taken to the folder holding the picture. Is that still possible?

A:How to view folder containing desktop background image?

Hi dani07 and welcome to Eight Forums,
It depends on how the theme settings are just right click in the desktop then click "Personalise" then highlight the theme you are using then click on "Desktop Backgrounds" in the upper down then you can see where the pictures are stored.
Hope that helps.

So I have my Desktop to load a random picture from a folder of ~3,000 images every minute. I tend to add new pictures to this folder from time to time (hence the reason why there's so many images in there right now). I am wondering if there's an advanced option that allows Windows to prioritize loading a random image with a more recent Date Modified detail. So for example, I will list File Names and the Date Modified detail next to them:

1.jpg (3/18/2016)
2.jpg (2/29/2016)
3.jpg (1/1/2016)
4.jpg (9/26/2013)
5.jpg (8/8/2012)
6.jpg (7/7/2007)

So in this example, Windows would most likely show the first 3 pictures randomly, before showing the last 3.
(Like so: 2, 1, 3, 4, 6, 5)

Do you understand what I'm saying here? I hope you see what I mean.

Hello everyone.

I'm having some problems with my computer and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out :<

I have folders on my computer which I store lots of images in for artwork resources.

I don't know why it happens, perhaps after I add a new image to the folder or change an existing image and save it, The folder sort of freezes/crashes, I cant click on any of the thumbnails, I cant close the folder, go to File or anything like that, Highlight anything drag nothing.

All it lets me do is minimise, maximise and scroll up and down. It wont even highlight the images/thumbnails when I click on them. I can still get into the files if I open them when I'm already in say photo shop, but I cant open them when I'm in the folder.

In the past I've had to go via Photo shop and re-save all the files from the crashed folder into a new one just so I can actually use the folders normally.

I mean it wont even let me close the folder T_T; it just crashes worse and worse every time I try and do anything until the screen freezes and then I have to re-start my computer.

Re-starting the computer and system restores do nothing the folders stay locked down. I'm actually really upset, as I lost everything from my last computer and it had photos of my mother on the hardrive, my mother has since passed away and they where all I had left. I have a few left on this new computer but I'm so afraid of loosing these last few I have.

I ran Malwarebytes to try to remove a virus, (I think it was Windows Restore but it was two weeks ago). Now my desktop background has been changed to solid black and some folders are hidden. Google and Yahoo! take a long time to find search results and then they redirect if I click directly on a link. Audio advertisements play in the background and I also get pretty regular IE script errors even if nothing seems to be running. Every now and then IE will open on it's own and go to a pop-up advertisement. My computer acts like it is running IE on its own and it is constantly cycling through pop-up adds in the background, but I can't find anything on taskmanager which looks suspicious. If I run rkill.exe the audio advertisements stop but they start up again pretty soon afterward. I've been updating Malwarebytes daily and running both full and quick scans, in regular and in safe mode, but nothing shows up. I really appreciate any help I receive, as I have been trying on my own to get rid of this whit no luck.

Hi, any help will be appreciated..
When I open my C:\WINDOWS window on My Computer, I get this weird picture of a manga-ish samurai (which I'm positive I've never intentionally downloaded) as the window background. Other folders window background are unaffected. I've tried changing Window schemes, etc but no change. My PC still works fine, everything functions (except for iTunes & quicktime, but I think its unrelated) so it's merely annoyance really, but I'm worried if it is a virus, it might spread. I've tried scanning with Ad-Aware and Avast but no virus were found. Wanted to try the online Panda scanner but took too long (I'm connecting from Indonesia)
Here's my DSS main.txt:

A:Possible virus -- changed windows background (not desktop background)

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop. Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% -(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Download Combofix and save it to your desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
I'll need the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, ... Read more

Hi all,
I'm new to this site, and not too knowledgable, but I'm sure some one out there can help.
I run windows XP, and currently my desktop is showing an image that has come from a website I set up hosted by Webs.com. This is over riding my preferred background, which I can still see the edges of behind my Internet Explorer home page.
I must say that the website has been trouble free and extremely easy to operate since I started it over two years ago, but recently I found that I couldn't upload images properly. The images would upload but were far too large for the page, and I could not resize them as I had in the past. I intend to go through the Webs support to sort this out, but my concern now is that the images I had on my pages have disappeared, and been replaced with the message" Oops, Image not found. Webs provides your image hosting  www.webs.com. This is what shows on my screen when I close all tabs
Somehow, in my attempts to upload and resize my images I have caused this.
Everyone I have asked about this is baffled. Help please!

i don't know...but I suggest contacting your current web host for assistance.
I see several reports of this happening but no solution per se.

i used windows home premium 64bit, when i change my desktop background, after few minutes, it'll return to the previous desktop background. can anyone help me?

A:desktop background return to previous background after changed it.

Hello Nirzan and welcome to Seven Forums.

Make sure you're following the steps in Option Two of this article, particularly Step 7, "save changes".

Desktop Background - Change

If the problem still isn't fixed, your computer may have damaged or corrupt system files. Sometimes files get damaged because of malware so run a full scan using your preferred anti-virus suite. Since no anti-virus is 100% effective 100% of the time, it's always a good idea to run some additional on-demand scans. These are free and recommended. The more scans you run (one at a time!) the greater the probability your computer is not infected.

ESET Online Scanner

If your computer comes back clean I'd next run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if anything helped or not.

I had moved 'My Pictures' folder away from C: \Users\username\My Pictures when I first set the computer up and I had it in another partitioned drive (E.

For space reason I wanted to move it back to it's original location above and moved the whole folder across to the C: but instead of having it as a folder in the username folder as it should be I merged it in error with the username folder!

The folder is now named My Pictures and has the path C: \Users\My Pictures\ in the registry. I have (hopefully) attached the properties of the folder which shows that there is no location tab. The network path is shown as \\HOME\Users\username.

How do I clean up the folder back to it's standard user folder detail without the merged detail of My Pictures and I guess the easier part is to create a new My Pictures folder and point the registry to it (as per the detail in the top line).

Please help a newbie!

Have you tried a System Restore back to a date prior to doing what you did? That MAY fix it.

System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools

Here's a strange one.....

All the pictures and folders from the 'My Pictures' folder are missing. I checked my recycle bin but they are not there. There is one folder in there of some stock photos (about 1 GB), but everything else is gone.

At the moment I am running Recuva, but it is taking some time. Any ideas on what may have happened?

I'm stumped.....it has to be something simple and obviously something I did!

Thank you for the help!

Hi Guys,I have a problem that I have not encountered before. For some unaccountable reason, I cannot open any picture in the 'My Pictures' folder.Whenever I attempt to open a picture I get an error message that says: File C:/Documents and Settings/User/My Documents/My Pictures/ could not be opened.Initially, I thought that it might have been a virus, but scans by AVG have turned up nothing.I have no idea how to solve this problem. Please help. With Thanks.Compton

A:Pictures In The 'my Pictures' Folder Cannot Be Opened

Hello Compton,This could be down to a number of reasons. Are you logged on the system with an account that has administrative access? The event viewer may give some more information.1. Click Start select run2. Type eventvwr.exe3. Press enter4. Search through the groups for errors and warnings.5. Double click on each error and or warning.6. Locate the copy to clipboard button, (under the two arrows)7. Let us know what you find. (paste the results)

All the pictures in my Pictures folder have disappeared, leaving behind a bunch of empty folders. I did not delete them, and I have no viruses according to AVG. It appears that this happened to a few others on this forum, but no solutions were presented.

If it helps - I noticed that the Read Only button was checked on the main folder, so I unchecked it, and I watched the status window un-apply "read only" protection from all my actual pictures files, so it seems to me that they're still there but invisible.

I performed a system restore, and Recova is in the process of performing a "Deep Scan" for my pictures (the quicker scan did not find the files). Has anyone solved the problem of the disappearing pictures? Is this a Vista problem, or perhaps a problem with an update? Any help would be appreciated!

A:Pictures disappeared from Pictures folder!

Read only shouldn't have anything to do with it. Have you checked the Recycle Bin and AVG's quarantine? Is the Hidden attribute cleared? Have you installed any new programs or updates?
