When workign in Word and closing a file, Word closes completely most of the time. I have to reopen Word eveytime to be able to open a new file.

How do I keep Word open after closing a file?

Preferred Solution: MS Word closes when file closes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

I'm really sorry if i've posted in the wrong forum, but i can't click on anything that has the word Virus or Hijack this, as it will just close automatically.
Which means i can't run the Hijack this log, nor run my virus scans on the computer.

I am too afraid to log into my email accounts and bank accounts in case there is some spyware on my computer.

I've tried running Stinger.exe and all my anti virus in safemode but it doesn't seem to do the trick.

I am not sure what i can do.
Can anyone advise?
Many thanks.

Try renaming HijackThis. After that, you should be able to open it.

Hello, I have a few users who have had problems with MS Word closing on its own. They both use XP Pro (SP2) and they both use Office 2003 Pro. What basically happens is that the user will notice that the program will just close automatically when they multi-task with other programs: Outlook, Web, etc.

I tried looking on the Internet for a possible solution but I haven't seen anything really pertaining to this problem. Please provide me with a possible solution for troubleshooting this error. I haven't ruled out reloading the programs yet. Thank you much.

A:Word Closes Itself

Hmm. I want to clarify a few things. You say this happens when the users are multi-tasking.

Does Word 'close' when they are actually using Word or when they are using a different application?

Have the users received a message saying that Word must close? If not:

Have the users in question opened task manager to see if Word is still listed under Applications?

I have Windows XP Professional on a Dell Dimension (6 months old) computer. I've installed SP2 -- but my problem began before and continues after installed SP2. I use MS Word a lot. I open MS Word to use it and start to write something or paste something into a new document. Then, I may need to go to an email to check out some information or go to IE6 to check something. I find what I want and then click on the MS Word link on the task bar. I try to re-open MS Word but it immediately closes and I've some of what I've started composing although I may get some of it back when I go back to Start and click on MS Word to reopen it again (as long as I have "automatic save" every 1 minute turned on). This is so frustrating. I've tried repairing MS Word via the Control Panel's Add/Remove feature. I've run several different kinds of virus checks on my computer as well as SpyBot and other similar programs--I seem to have no problems with my computer but the problem persists nearly every time I wish to use MS Word (2003). It is so unstable I've thought of installing MS Word 2000 as it was always so stable and dependable. Do you have any suggestions that might help me.
Thank you very much. Jim

A:MS Word closes

Try the fix for a lot of MS Word issues.

Search for and delete all copies of the MS Word template file

Restart MS Word which will recreate it.

Carry out virus scans with fully up to date signature files or on line

Then download and install Spyware removal software.

Ad-Aware, Spywareblaster, Spybot & CWshredder. All easily and readily found with google.

Run each, update all of them and then run again, removing everything found.

Hi Guys

I use OUTLOOK as my e-mail client. It brings up WORD as its text editor. So far pretty typical, right? But even if I have WORD minimized before I use OUTLOOK, when I have finished sending an e-mail message and get out of OUTLOOK, it also closes WORD. Is there a way to have WORD continue in memory after getting out of OUTLOOK?

MS Word 2000 SR-1 closes immediately on launch. My operating system in Microsoft XP Pro. I've removed the program and reinstalled it, restarting the system after each action. I've updated AVG and run it, then restarted the computer, but no luck. Any ideas?

A:Word closes immediately

yes, here an idea
though, you have remove the application from your computer, you system have kept some files from old installation.
not to worry, this can be fixed by purging all MS Office files from your system.

let us start with add/remove programs & remove MS Office 2000
click Start, Run & type regedit & OK. browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office. right click that folder & choose the delete option.
go to C drive, Programs Files, & delete Microsoft Office from there. (don't worry if you receive an error of some files can not be removed, will just do it after reboot)
if the last step gave u an error, please reboot & delete after reboot (don't open any applications or browsers)
click Start, Run & type %TEMP%, the click OK. (delete all items within the folder that opens)
reinstall MS Office 2000
this should fix your issue. please let me know how it goes

I'm running Microsoft Word 2003 on win 7. Program opens & closes very slowly (approx 15 sec).
I was told that this is a problem with the normal.dot file, which needs to be renamed. I have tried several different methods to access the normal.dot file but have not been successful. Through properties of documents and settings I was not able to access the folder.
Any ideas that can help me resolve this issue would be appreciated. Also, would renaming the normal.dot file solve the slow start and close problem???

I was trying to find more information on this. There was a thread back in Dec. '07 between Rollin_again and moonwalker about Word taking a long time to open or close and using 100% cpu usage during those times. According to the post, I tried the first steps that had been suggested but the thread is now closed. I got as far as being able to open word really quickly by opening it with the /a switch so I know it must be an add in issue. However that was there the thread ended and I was trying to find out what next steps might be.

Were there suggestions as to what I should look at specifically? I have no addins in word. I do have symantec antivirus and adobe both loaded on my compuetr(XP SP2 with 1.5gb ram).

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

The problems have not been fixed.

1. When I open a new (or saved)windows 2000 document, and I try to highlight and right click (to cut) it displays a message "windows has experienced a problem and will need to unexpectantly shut down". It shuts down and I lose all information.

2. When I receive an email (Windows Live Mail) and it has a link to a website. When I click on it, it will open a new internet explorer page but won't connect to it.

My computer has a pentium 4 processor, and runs at 2.8Ghz. I use windows XP home SP3. I have office 97 installed. I had printer problems in December 2008 and the first of Jan. 2009. I finally purchased a new HP Photosmart D7560 printer the first week in Jan. of 2009. I re-installed Office 97 at that time, because I thought there was problems with it, but I never was sure. Since then everything has been functioning perfectly, until 8 days ago. Word started closing whenever I would hit the print button. I do not recall any problems at that time.

Just all of a sudden I started to print a document, when I hit the print button Word would close and nothing would print. I opened the print que and tried printing. The document never went to the que.

I have gone through all the setting that I know about and I cannot find anything wrong. Could someone please give me some ideas about what has happened.

Thank You

Tired Old Man

A:Solved: Word 97 closes when print button is pressed

No body can tell you exactly what happens. But I think we can tell you what to do.
If necessary, use the System restore to go back the 8 days. every thing will be fine.
if you disabled System restore, so just uninstall Office 97 and reinstall it.
if the problem still, uninstall the printer software and Office 97 and any newly installed software. then reinstall the printer driver first (preferably search a new driver version in the manifacturer website) then install office 97 and ONLY the necessary software.
if not solved... I think you should reinstall windows.

A friend is having this problem at her work that just started recently.

She needs to have multiple Word documents open at a time and when she closes one, either via the shortcut icon or via File - close (not close all), it will close the entire group of Word documents.

Hello all,
I have a user who uses MS Office 2007 on a Win 7 workstation. When she is working in Word or Excel, and moves the cursor to the ribbon, that program closes. Just shuts down. Doesn't ask to save, and no errors, just closes.

It doesn't happen to me when I remote onto her machine and try to recreate the issue.

I have been on a live meeting with her and watched as this problem occurs.

Any ideas?

A:Word and Excel 2007 closes when cursor moves to ribbon

If that does not happen when another User is logged into the workstation, the issue most likely resides in this Users profile.
If this shows it is in the User Profile, I would rename the User profile (Admin Permissions required) to UserXBak, and then have this User log in, which creates a new profile. If all is good, all needed items like Documents, Pics, NK2 file, etc would then be copied to their locations in the new profile from the UserXBak. Printers will need to be re-added.
Note: Renaming is only adding Bak to existing name, not adding a period, like .bak)

I've got a document about 41 pages, broke into multiple sections. Track changes have been on, I've been able to edit the file for a while up until an hour. Now, when i make any changes this document just closes, this has been tried and same phenomenon occurs on 3 other computers, so it must be something with the file? Any idea would be appreciated.

Some interesting characteristics:
when change is made word shuts down.
but when you use auto recover and word opens back up, the change that caused word to close is actually made.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 closes in error when I make a change with track changes

do you have the remove hidden data feature installed and turned on?
Otherwise, I would suspect a corrupt Normal.dot file - close Word, find and rename or delete it (Word will rebuild it when you open it again).

Good afternoon people,

Firstly, I would like to say hello to everyone who've helped me in the past with my Access help. It's been a long absence with study commitments and such, but as is the purpose of this group, I would like to ask for some tech help:

The situation: Microsoft Word (as part of Office 2003 Professional Edition) frequently closes without user notification on my dad's laptop (Windows Vista Basic). It's recently started, and it interrupts his work. He says that the issue occurs when he minimises documents, but he didn't indicate a frequency of this occurrence. He also told me that once he successfully saves a document and closes Word, he then encounters issues when opening said document; it says that the file has been "corrupted" (I can't remember exactly what the dialog box says), and that the data can be recovered, or to proceed with opening the document. Data recovery doesn't work, and when he proceeds to open the document, Word returns "Program not responding" and "Critical error caused by the program" and other prompts of this nature, which then forces the program to quit.

I am aware that a similar problem is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for Word 2003, but was last revised in 2004 (so covered only xp and 2000), and am not certain if this issue is the same for Windows Vista. It related to the "Handwriting Recognition" program.

Additionally, as always, there are a multitude of ... Read more

Been using Vista 32 bit for a couple of years and this never happened before. Upgraded to Vista 64 bit and whenever I view or write in a text file, clicking the close button does not close it, but closes the folder its in instead. Click again to close it and it does close. But why does it do that? Very annoying because I often do not want to close the folder its in. Even more annoying is when the folder is nested within several other folders and I have to dig it out again.

I'd like to create a .bat (or some else small file) which closes multiple .exe processes just by opening it:
1. I open the file from my desktop
2. File closes for example svchost.exe and explorer.exe and finally the file itself.
This is because I don't need some programs, which open when Windows starts, every time.
Thanks already!

I run Outlook 2002 (Office XP Professional). The program now opens, says that it is checking "archive folders" because it was not closed properly file being checked for problems. Looks like it may start to send/receive and then closes immediately. It has been prompting me every time I open it with this "archive folder" checking for a while, but the program has always run. This started first thing Friday after the send/receive. The archive.pst file is: 1,064,704KB and the Outlook.pst file is: 637,072KB. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this. I'd like to keep my contacts and files if possible. Thanks!

I am facing an issue with a user where they are unable to keep a window of File Explorer open when on a network drive. It will stay open for a short period of time and then close.

When browsing on the local machine or  directly to the share via the UNC path the window will stay open.

Here is a link which shows the issue in which I am facing. But we are using Server 2012 as opposed to 2008 r2.

The fix which was highlighted on the above link seems to already be in place. Yet the issue is still occurring.

Is there any reason as to why this could be happening? There seems to be nothing been mentioned in Event Logs.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 (with and without Update 1) from Windows 8, the File Explorer has new quirk in its behavior that drives me crazy. My computer is on a domain and has a mixture of DFS drives and the older network drives mounted to drive
letters. Whenever I leave File Explorer showing either a DFS or network drive, after a few minutes of inactivity, it will close. I then have to reopen it and find the folder again. If I switch away from the File Explorer to go to something else, many
times when I go to switch back to File Explorer only to find it has closed. This is really annoying. No error message, it just closes. The computers with Windows 7 and older don't do this. And Windows 8 did not do this. Both my desktop computer and
my Surface Pro, both 8.1 Update 1 do this. My servers are Windows 2008 R2.
Is there any reason for this? Or is there any registry hack or setting that controls this behavior?
Thanks, Carl

A:Windows 8.1 File Explorer unexpectedly closes when on a network drive.

We already use GPO, but from what you say, it may be worthwhile to check if we have any manually applied drive mapping. I'll give that a try.
Thanks, Carl

Please check if your GPO drive mapping is set to "Replace". If so try changing it to Update?

Lately we have had several times (mostly when logging in) that we connect to the internet, then click on Internet Explorer and it opens a page like it's going to go to our "home page" and then the page closes - without ever having gone anywhere. I thought it was specific to the URL we had designated as our home page - USATODAY which we've had for years - but it has totally shut down on my when I've been in Yahoo too. It doesn't happen all the time so I'm stumped as to what is happening. I deleted all cookies in case there was a corrupted cookie associated with USATODAY, but that didn't seem to make a difference. And like I said, I had it happen after I'd been on the net a while and working with Yahoo. I use Windows XP on a Gateway computer that we just installed a new hard drive the end of November - it came with nothing loaded on it - I did it all. It has happened before and after a full Virus Scan so I'm not infected with anything that I know of. Any insights into what's happening?

A:IE closes by itself

When the last time you upgraded it?

An upgrade may fix the problem.
