HP Elitebook 8560w won't boot, help?

Q: HP Elitebook 8560w won't boot, help?

This afternoon I left my Elitebook open and running on the table and when I returned half an hour later the screen was black. I figured it had gone to sleep but when I moved my mouse nothing happened. I pushed the power button, still no response. Even after holding the power button for an extended period of time nothing happened, aside from the power led blinking for a couple of seconds. I've already tried removing the battery etc, but it didn't work. All help is appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was thinking of upgrading the RAM in my Elitebook 8650w. I know the type of memory I need (DDR3 PC-10600 1333 Mhz) but I was wondering how many strips are build in already?I got the quad core version so my laptop has 4 slots, from which 2 are under the keyboard and I dont want to take the laptop apart. My laptop has 4 GB of RAM this moment. My question is, are there 2 strips of 2GB DDR3 RAM already installed or just 1 strip of 4 GB? Or is this something varying from factory to factory?

Yes, DDotDacherDash has a very good point to use the Support Assistant. Bur if you are like me, and you uninstalled all unnecessary software, you can also run the free Crucial memory scanner that will scan your PC and report the same info without installing any software. http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ Paul

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me diagnose this problem with my 8560W:It randomly hard locks up - ie the mouse/keyboard input stop and music playback freezes - about 10 seconds later the machine turns right off.  I haven't noticed any pattern to when it does it - sometimes it'll go for a week with no problems, other times it'll freeze before the windows sign-in screen. I've tried a fresh windows install (but have also seen the lockups in safe mode) so I don't think it's a bad driver issue. There is nothing meaningful in event viewerI suspected it might be an SSD failing - so tried another and had the same issues. I've seen the lockups on battery, and with both the power adapters I have - also on AC with the battery removed.I've run the built-in efi extensive diagnosis a few times - all passing completely. I have cleaned out the heatsinks with compressed air - though they didn't look too bad.  Keeping an eye on CPU temperatures - it does lock up some times when the temperatures are relatively low. Something I've noticed (and I don't know if it's a red herring or not) is that the system fan tends to not spin as much as it used to - ie I don't notice hearing it.  I've tried to roll back my BIOS - but haven't been able to - in Windows it tells me I can't go back, and in 'bios' it tells me it can't find the signature. Any help at this point would be appreciated.  I'd hate to have to throw the system out - it is still a ve... Dear EliteBook users,Did anyone try - and succeed - adding some memory module to the primary memory slot underneath the keyboard of an EliteBook 8560w?I needed some extra memory and successfully added two modules to the slots below the bottom cover. But I needed more, and had to add it to the remaining slot just below the keybord. For that I had to remove the keyboard, but that turned out to be an impossible task. The user-guide ("Getting Started", p.45 and on) tells you how to do that, but that is definitely not correct. For instance, there is no "keyboard release cut-out", as indicated in p.46. Also the force you have to exert on the keyboard back-side is dangerouly hight (dangerous for the keyboard and for your fingers). Googling for that did not help. In fact, a bit surprisingly, I have found other two user-guides for the same model, all of them with different technics to remove the keyboard, and all of them inapropriate. To make things worse, HP support in the Netherlands said they could do nothing for me, except sending me the same manuals I already have. And there is absolutelly no available channel to complain with HP about that!I'd be grateful for any information on that.Regards.G.Oliveira.?

Hi, I have had my Elitebook for almost 5 years now. It currently runs Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with 16 GB of RAM. I'm still running on the installed Hitachi 500 GB HDD, but it's getting a little slow for my taste and I'm worried it might fail at any time. I've been hoping to replace the 500 GB HDD with a 500 GB SSD from Samsung by cloning it, then wipe the old HDD completely, and THEN replace the optical bay with a new 2nd HDD of some unspecified capacity. My problem now: I have about 300 GB's worth of data (went to an engineering school). I spoke to an HP rep on a live chat who told me that the largest supported capacity for an SSD (that can only be in the primary slot) is 256 GB and the largest supported capacity for an HDD in the replacement bay is 500 GB. Rather than move and link my entire USER's folder to the 2nd HDD (which is possible but still confusing for me at this point), I'd like to get a second opinion from someone in the HP community. Is the capacity limitation a matter of drive height? BIOS limitation? Is it still possible to get a 500 GB SSD instead? I've seen in various forums that the user had a larger drive than suggested. Thanks.

I have a laptop that will not charge the battery with the AC Adapter. I have tried different combinations between two chargers and two batteries and I always have the same results. The only time it will charge is when I connect it to my docking station which is a Hewlett-Packard (HP) NZ222AA - HSTNN-I10X 120W Advanced Docking Station. The charger I have is an HP PA-1151-09HA TPC-LA52 Adapter. The second charger is from another laptop. That is also the charger used in the docking station. That is an HP PA-1231-66HJ. I have tried both of these chargers in my EliteBook 8570p and they were both able to charge that laptop.  The laptop will run with the charger, without the battery. The only message the battery icon displays is "No battery detected". If I then attach the battery with the laptop still on, the message will change to "xx% and not charging. It will then run on battery power until it dies. At that point, it will turn off. If I followed the same scenario but unplugged it after attaching the battery, the message with change to "xx% and in use".  If I try to plug it in after that, it will continue to say "xx% and in use". It will not change back to "xx% and not charging". If the laptop was started with the battery in and then I plug it in, it will always say "xx% and in use". Hello,i have problem with my EliteBook 8560w(With dual boot Windows 7 64bit and Linux Mint 17.3 if its important). When I plug it in AC charger it turns on by itself and after 2-3 sec. it shutsdown without warning. After shutting down the laptop can't be turned on using the power button. This occurs everytime I plug it in the charger. I get the same problem when I place the battery. I tryed the following: removing RAM, removing HDD, removing BIOS battery. Everytime the laptop turns on itself immediately when plugged in then shuts down after 2-3 sec. Its not heating problem either, because fan check is passing and I have recently replaced heatsink paste. When I plugged off the power button from the motherboard, the laptop stopped turning on when pluged in, but there is no way I can turn it on. Any suggestions what can be the cause of the problem and what solution can I try?Thank you in advance.

My hp elitebook 8560w workstation has suddenly stopped working. It does not power up from the power button anymore. After several attempts, I managed to power it up, yet in a very unusual way. In order to turn it on, I have to remove battery and unplug the charger, press the power button once, return the battery and press the Quick Web button. Only by doing so, the lapton turns on normally.   Couple of other things to notice as well. First, when the Laptop enters the energy-saving mode, it shuts down completely. Second, the Windows 7 welcome sound comes late (roughly 5-6 min. after boot-up) I know that these symptoms might be caused by different concurrent issues, but I would appreciate it, if you can help me out with this case.  Thank you in advance

I know in the past it was noted that you could not install these cards in a whitelist enabled BIOS, but has HP changed or updated the ability to install these cards on these specific older computers? If not, PLEASE HP, help your existing users. Please remove the whitelist from these older BIOS, specifically the ELITEBOOK 8560W. Thanks.

A:Intel wireless-ac 7260 with Elitebook 8560w

You still have the whitelist. It is not present in computers having an Intel Core 4th gen and higher CPU, but yours is second gen so the whitelist is still a problem for you. People have been asking for "de-whitelisted" BIOS for these machines for years and it has never happened so I can't hold out any hope it ever will.  These two devices will work: Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 802.11 3x3 a/g/n WiFi Adapter 572511-001Intel Centrino Advanced N 6205, 2x2 a/b/g/n WiFi Adapter 631954-001 The 6300 takes 3 antenna and the 6205 only two. Both are 2.4 and 5 ghz compatible devices and are pretty good wireless cards, just not 802.11ac.  https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-n-6300AGN-Wirless-THINKPAD-572511-001/dp/B01EDT6I2C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UT... https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-631954-001-Intel-PCI-express-Wireless/dp/B00TI8CMX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie... The above are very strong wireless cards, particularly the 6300 with 3 antennae if your laptop has 3 antennae. I am sure it has at least 2. I wish I could link you to a workable 802.11ac card but I cannot and these are the best you can get.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello.I own an elitebook 8560w since 2012.I had never ever used its battery, because actually i never needed to (I used it pretty much as a desktop). Yesterday,i bought a genuine hp-battery specific for my computer. And here is the problem that occured:While my computer is ON with the battery disconnected, when i connect the battery, the power switches from ac to battery like it should, but the battery is NOT charging. Moreover,i dont have the "plugged in,not charging" problem like most of other people in forum discussions, but right after the moment i insert the battery, the charger connected to my laptop is totally ignored!Like its not connected at all! As a result,if i disconnect the battery, the laptop power doesnt switch back to the charger, but shuts down ,as it doesnt "see" any power supply. Not only that, but even if it shuts down it will not start up,until i disconnect and re-connect the charger (maybe because it is still waiting to get power from battery which was disconnected and is not switching to the charger supply). Finally,i ran a battery test in hp connection manager and result was that battery is "OK". I have my laptop on dual boot (Windows-7-64 / Kali-linux ) and all these problems above apply to Kali as well, which leads me to the conclusion that it isnt a software problem. Also,i have to mention something important: After the original charger i had bought the laptop with, stopped working 3 years ago,i didnt buy the genuine, but a universal... Hello, I have an HP EliteBook 820 G3 that was working fine a couple days ago and now I can not get it to boot from a USB Stick. I have set the the BIOS to USB Boot and no matter what type of USB stick I try and no matter what USB Port I try I can not get to show USB on the F9 boot menu as an option. The stick I am trying to boot is an SCCM Boot stick for BIOS (non-uefi)  devices. I have tried a UEFI fomatted one to make sure that was not the problem and it made no difference. In my cube I have a ton of other HP hardware and all of the are booting this same exact stick with no issue. But even if the stick was not properly formatted it should still show USB as an option on the Boot Menu with the BIOS set to boot from it. I have reset the BIOS back to defaults, I have cleared the USB Boot Check Box and then rebooted and placed it back. I flashed the BIOS up to the current version and that made no difference. When the machine boots the OS displays the contents of the flash drive properly. Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hello.  I have an Elitebook 8770w that is not booting nor outputting video.  Immediately after plugging in the AC adapter, the machine powers up on its own and the fans run at 100%. In addition, the keyboard backlighting briefly works. Front panel LEDs on solid are power and hard drive, with the wireless light solid at times.  Had caps/num lock show a "1" blink code which is usually a CPU issue.  No video on the internal LCD nor external monitor.  Keyboard lights up, but no response when any keys are pressed.Did a hard reset but it did not help.Swapped out the CPU and mainboard and tried booting up using only one stick of RAM, no hard drives or DVD, no docking station, no usb devices, and no external monitor.Same exact problem.  Swapped the new CPU with the original...no change.HP Business Support is sending a box to ship the unit in for repair.  It's 2 months out of warranty.I almost have to be missing something here.  Unit worked flawlessly until the afternoon of the above problem. Please advise.  Thank you.

If you swapped everything out with parts, then somethong you didn't swap would have to be the problem.I've seen monitors and even power switch boards cause problems that I would have sworn were a bad motherboard. We even had one where the keyboard was keeping the notebook PC from powering up.A fast fan is usually a symptom of defective memory, but I have seen it caused by an SSD.

Hey all, So, I have a verified bootable USB key (it boots in several different models of computer) that this 9470m will not boot from. I have verified that the USB booting options are set in the BIOS, and made sure that they are on the top of the boot order. Also, pressing F9, it doesn't show up in the list of options.

I bought my EliteBook 840 G1 in February 2014, it runs Windows 10 (64-bit) and was working perfectly fine until yesterday morning. After coming back from the work I tried to turn my PC on just to see it unable to launch Windows. It locks up at HP logo only to reboot couple of seconds later and then gets stuck in the loop. In order to avoid spamming the forum I have done my research and tried all the solutions I could find here on the HP forums before I decided to publish a question. I ran full memory and hard disk checks and they yielded no errors - both tests passed successfully. The next thing I did was to update the BIOS which was outdated but this didn't solve the problem. Afterwards I cleaned the cooling fan, performed hard reset and tried to swap the RAM slots with no joy. Finally I tried removing and replacing the memory module only to fail to boot up once again. Is there something else I could try myself before taking it to the shop? Thank you.

I've recently upgraded from a FolioBook 9470M to an EliteBook 840 G3, and I've now lost the BIOS option of enabling Num Lock at boot.Current BIOS version is N75 v 1.10 I've searched high and low for a solution, none of the reg edit fixes listed online have any effect. The reason I'm eager to fix this is because every time I boot up I need to enter a numeric BitLocker key on an external USB keyboard. Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought this computer as a refurbish about 7 months ago. It came with Windows 7 installed so I upgraded to Windows 10.It has been a very reliable machine until recently. Last week it suddenly failed to recognize the LAN connection. I checked all of the connections and there were no issues. I decided to perform a recovery through the windows recovery system. The recovery failed. I then went into the HP diagnostic tools. I ran the memory and disk diagnostics and they both came back successful. I then ran the run-in test and it just continues to loop. Any ideas? Help would be appreciated.

Hello! I recently received an 8570w with issues. I was told that it may have problems with the motherboard. When I plug the charger (without battery) it powers on automatically: leds are on, cooler is on, display remains black (not even backlit). After a few seconds it stops and it starts again. I guess that if I leave it like that, it will repeat this over and over.Does anyone encountered this issue? I also removed the bios battery (I thought it might help) nd RAMs, but no success.

Hello, I have a newly (less than a month old) purchased HP Elitebook 820 G1. On this laptop we are using the Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools. This has worked fine for roughly two weeks. But now, upon startup we receive the following error message: .autorun.sh: line 131: 185 Segmentation fault /wm/pba -fn "Droid Sans"
ERROR: PBA returned 139.
grep: /wm/logs/pbn.log: No such file or directory
grep: /wm/logs/pbn.log: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access /var/db/*.lease: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `/wm/pblhook*.bin': No such file or directory
Please insert USB disk to machine and wait a while, press Enter after it is done This happens before we receive a chance to type in the encryption key. Attempting to boot using the USB disk created during the Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools installation does not work, it is not recognized as a bootable disk. The Computer has Windows 7 Professional installed. Any ideas on how to remedy this situation?

The lack of responses makes me inclined to believe that I will need to wipe the device and reset it to factory defaults.

Hi, we've just had a mainboard replaced on an Elitebook 850 G1 and now Windows 10 wont start.  HP tech's arent being too helpful as the machine came with Windows 8 and was upgraded.  I get the preparing automatic repair screen and then the advanced troubleshoting options.  Startup repair gets nowhere.  In Command Prompt cant see any partitions. DISPART/list disk says "There are no fixed disks to show". I booted to a Windows 10 bootable USB and a DVD and same issue. At the suggestion of HP I tried setting boot mode to Legacy and UEFI Hybrid modes and no different.  I tried changing the boot order with M2.SATA and SATA drive and no difference. I booted to the original Windows 8 recovery DVD as far as selecting a drive/partition to install on and can see the 4 partitions and all looks OK. I'm running out of ideas and really dont want to do a full reinstall as the machine has a lot of app's and would need some very time consuming configuration Any suggestions? ThanksDarren

The laptop currently has a cracked screen. I need to access it before Windows boots up. The external screen works fine after Windows loads but does not work before the OS loads. Is there a way to enable the external monitor during the booting process? Much thanks!
