Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

Q: Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?
It;s a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 with Windows 8 installed

Preferred Solution: Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

> WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive
That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

Dear Anyone.

Downloaded WMP 11. It installed fine. But when I go to sites, such as lordoftv.com, that use an embedded version of the player to stream video, I get nothing. No error message, just a screen with the Windows Media Player logo on it. I can click on it, right-click on it, no error messages, just nothing happens!

Tested some of the single-stream sites - lordoftv.com is a multi stream site with 1000 plus stations - with VLC player and they work fine. Thing is, with VLC you can only use single streaming sites, you can't make it work on multiple sites like lordoftv. Which makes it a pain - every time you want to change stations you have to change sites, find the URL of the streaming page and manually enter it into the VLC player!

Please, anyone have any ideas why the sites don't like WMP 11? They didn't mind 9, my old version, but I haven't got that any more :-(

Again, I'm sorry I can't give you a helpful error message but I'm not getting any myself. Just.... nothing happening.

Yours puzzledly

I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).

A:How do i make media player play several files in succession?

Most players have a playlist that you can simply prepare. Almost all will play selections in order if you select more than one when you open a file through the File menu. (Sometimes, to select more than one in the file window, you need first to set the focus there by clicking on a blank spot on the bottom or far right inside the file window. Then you can select multiple files using Ctrl+click or Shft+click).

Hello everyone, I have a problem with Quicktime right now. I really would like Media Player to be the default player for .mpg and .wmv, but even though I have Mozilla set in the options screen to open those programs with Media Player, they are still opening in Quicktime! I also went to the plugin settings screen in QT and set it to NOT be the default player for video files (unless they're .mov). After I did this, those video files i told mozilla to open in MP are still being opened in QT! Am I doing something wrong? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

A:How to make Media Player the default player for video, NOT Quicktime

Click start/all programmes/set programme access and defaults. Click the custom button and under choose default media player, check the windows media player button and click ok.

Both tell me they can't play the file.

But they work if I put in a cd in the drive.

Anyone know why they wouldn't play from internet ?

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

A:Windows Media Player will not play DVD's

hello buddy,

You say your WMP previously could play DVD's, and that means you have installed a DVD decoder on your laptop, then i suggest you try the things as following:

1. Double-click the DVD file to open it, DO NOT drag & drop or click open from file menu;
2. If you are not using Windows Vista, delete the WMP and reinstall it;
3. If the two attempts above do not work or your are using Wins Vista, i'm afraid you will have to restore your Wins OS.
4. If you think restoring OS is not worth all the bother, just download and install VLC player to replace WMP. VLC player can play various video files including DVD's and BD's.

The above is all the solutions i can provide. Try them and let me know if they can solve your problem. Good Luck.

I'm running WMP version 9.0 on a P2 350 MHZ computer. I have 256 RAM installed and are having problems getting the player to play audio samples from the web. For example: I'm interested in hearing a certain track on amazon.com's site; I scroll down to the CD's track listing and are offered a chance to "listen" to a certain song. I'm assuming that it isn't the ENTIRE track so it shouldn't take long to steam it. I have a DSL line and it takes a long time to try to get the song to play so I just quit out of it. One time I waited nearly 5 minutes and still no music. Is there a reason why WMP 9.0 isn't working with my setup ?? If I click on WMP (launch the program) my video and audio works WITHIN that but not when I try to sample a song from another website. What can I do to fix this ? Is upgrading to version 10 the answer? Before I purchase a CD online I'd like to hear what's on it first. You can't download these samples, you can only listen to them. Any help is appreciated.

I check what file it said it was associated with the error and it was appcompat.txt. well, i checked this file, deleted it, and even after that the error still says it's one of the files involved. I have tested all other file types, audio and video and they all work. I have tried multiple wmv files and they dont work. Playing these on any other players (Bs player, the core player, divx) however, works fine. It has gotten to be really annoying because i can't stream videos in internet explorer without internet explorer shutting down either. Noone seems to know what to do... any help is appreciated.

I have recently built a new PC and installed Windows XP Home with SP2.

I have installed a fairly standard CD-RW/DVD combo, all mainboard chip support software has been installed. DVD'S play back perfectly and all sound functions seem to work fine but when I attempt to play back a CD a box comes up indicating that Windows cannot play the file because the file path may be wrong.

I installed a secondary media player just to make sure it was nothing to do with the drive and it played ok, so I know that technically everything is fine, codecs are installed and the drive can be found. I uninstalled the secondary player and went on the hunt for a technical solution from Microsoft, the explanation below is all I can find.

The problem I keep running into everywhere is that under Vista WMP11 is an integral part so there's no way to re-install/fix it. Codec packs like K-Light or Vista Media Pack don't fix this either.

So I'm just generally stuck with trying to find any solution to fix this.

You are now on the Select Components screen, VfW Interface should be selected by default, but if it is not, then please select it.Click Next and select a start menu folder (default is perfectly fine again), Click Next again and now you reach the "Select Additional Tasks" screen. It is important now that you ensure that under "Decode the following video formats with ffdshow", H.264 / AVC, DivX, and XviD options are selected. Scroll down further until you reach "Decode the following audio formats with ffdshow" and just ensure that AAC is selected and also selecting MP3 won't do any harm. (these settings are usually default) When you click Next, you will come to a "Management of compatibility issues" screen. It is recommended to leave the option to use FFDShow for video only with the programs listed beneath to prevent any compatibility problems with other software. Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player will be in here. Click Next and you will get the same screen again, this time for audio. Click Next and select your speaker setup (if you only have 2 speakers, its stereo). Click Next again and then "Install".

When the installation is finished, yo... Read more

I updated to WMP 11 and now I can't play my newly bought dvd's

I have searched threads here and have so far d/led DECCHECKSetup and ran that. (I have attached a pic of the results)
I tried what was suggested and set InterVideo Video Decoder as the preferred decoder but there was change
At the moment it has been reset to defults.

I rolled back to WMP 10 and now I get Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection.

It does however play dvd's bought in Bali

I've tried everything I know to do and everything I have found so far on the net, but no matter what I can not get my WMP to play anything at all, not wav. mp3. or even wma. By the way it is WMP 9.0 and thx if anyone cal help

A:Windows Media Player Will Not Play ANYTHING!

A lot of gray area with your problem but first I would try to pinpoint whether WMP is the problem. Could be:

Sound Card Drivers (anything else make sound?)
File Associations (Is WMP the default for .wav .wma .mp3 ?)
And then last a corrupt WMP9

I wouldn't waste time trying to repair WMP9 when WMP10 is available.

I would download 10 and that way you know it's intact.

My husband was given an older laptop and he has found out that he cannot get WMP to play a DVD movie. He bought the Cyberlink PowerDVD SE for Windows XP but that didn't help him either. I don't know what kind of information to give you, as I'm not very computer savvy myself, but I'll paste what I think is important from Everest. Could someone give us some help on how we might resolve this problem?

Likely that Gateway Optical drive has worn out, or has become defective for extended use. You can find new replacements on eBay
It would be good to find one you could borrow so you could run some tests before you spend any money.
