Q: fed up with hp's lack of xp support

about a year ago i bought an HP dv6605us laptop.

i wasnt sold on vista so i un-installed it and put xp on.

found enough drivers to make it function but its not enough now. i need something that'll let me use the video out.

just incase i figured i'd leave the Vista recovery partition still on the computer.

i boot up the pc, hit f11 for system recovery....nothing.

is it not possible to "recover" vista through xp? its probably a stupid question lol.

i know this is the only place i'd find the best answers. thanks guys.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

I have had so much stress after buying a brand new HP 250 G4 notebook! I've only had it a couple of months but since the start there have been browser and sound issues. Wish I'd got my  money back! I've spent hours on the phone to many HP customer support reps who have tried to fix the issues. I've even had my notebook sent off for repairs. When it was returned to me the sound issues had not been resolved despite the speakers having been replaced. I called HP again who then got me to install new drives. Issue still not fixed. My case has been kept open and I've not heard from any HP rep for a week. I know I'll have to call them! I'm fed-up and wouldn't recomment HP to anyone! Anyone else have any advice on how to get some decent support. My issue has been going on for two months! I'm based in the UK!

I have a x360 it scrashed, worked for hours online with teck and them they said we will send you a box i got it the next bad now i have been over a week for a return shipping lable that i was told would be in the box call after call goes no were, this is the same proble i account with my HP840 that was found to have the wrong parts and hard drive when i sent it to a purervisor and he looked inot, i sent the hp840 back to the factory twicw and it came back worst that when i sent it of, HP has a very bad QC/QP dept that need to have everyone of them ran off. even this new x360 has had problems straight out of the box, its time to close the door on HP as i have given them every change and move on th dell or something elese, I know how a computer works and can or may just build my own with American made parts

I am returning the Dell described below. Decided to do that on or about Sept.23 and I began applying to Dell for their RMA number. The timing of my ordering and then receiving the Dell was an almost impossible time. I am blessed with the C.O.P.D. disease and a head cold began to make it's presence known---and how it did!! Still have it and you never want the combination of these two "killers" to hit you together. I began to have my anxiety depleted when I could not get in touch with Dell; or rather no contact with any sympathetic soul and in fact, it was pretty much just the opposite. Support in India is strictly for no one. Well, they got my Scotch/Irish anger burning and I didn't give up---it was like not being able to contact anyone at Dell Support. I really and truly felt helpless; it was like no one was home.
Dell kept saying that I had 21 days to return the computer and I had among the several items in the computer box this one page of printed info with Dell logo in several places so I scanned it and sent it attached to one of my many emails to anyone at Dell I could find a name for. Today, I got my answer. Who ever approved it said he(?) was making an exception and gave his approval. Don't really see how an exception was made when the "letter" I scanned and sent to them clearly said 30 days and in which I was well within the boundary. I'm curious who has had enough problems with the lack of 64 bit software support that they are considering going with the 32 bit version when Windows 7 is released in the Fall.

Personally, the lack of a Cisco VPN client, some poor software support, and a few driver issues, is really making me reconsider going with 64. Then again, I have not tried out the XP virtualization.

Not me. I've got all the driver support I need to productively use x64. The only shortfall I see, for me, is the last of Flash for 64-bit. For that I just use 32-bit Firefox.

Ever since I got my new pc I have been attempting to contact MS Support in the UK to answer a very simple problem.

I bought Windows Media Center from Arvato GmbH in Germany. Their email address is none functional. When I bought it it fitted into the pc great, then my pc broke.

I have a new pc and nobody seems to want to help. I called the UK support number to be told that the number has changed to a 'less expensive' number - so I dialed that. After the usual robitic responses I actually reached a human being, although speaking a barely distinguishable accent. I told her the full history. 'Now let me get this straight, you have Windows 8.1'? 'Yes' I said 'but the problem is Media Center product key not working in Add Features in 8.1 - I have paid for a product that I cannot download.'

After several attempts to call them back, I got a phone ringing somewhere, and ringing, and ringing - you get the picture? Then another robot told me there is an error *click*

After another few attempts I gave up.

If Apple Macs were not so damn expensive I would stick MS where the sun does not shine.

Edit: Wow! finally got to 'speak' to MS via social media software. Gave them the details, we shall see ........

I purchased windows 8 pro and media center retail product keys when 8 first came out..
I recently re-used both key numbers to install on a NEW computer. this is allowed with retail keys, but it is limited in time frame.. You can not do this with oem keys... First disconnect from your internet connection, input the key, activate via phone.. had to do it for the pro key and then again for media center

I have been trying several times over the past few week to get a response from Auslogics using their web based form (the only way I can find of contacting them) and have had no response whatsoever from this. This is concerning a registered version of BoostSpeed. Has anyone found a way of getting a response from them?

Hey Lenovo team, The P50 website for Lenovo India ( http://shopap.lenovo.com/in/en/laptops/thinkpad/p-series/p50/ ) does not have a configurator & online purchase platform unlike the US website ( http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/p-series/p50/ ). I emailed TheDoStore support ([email protected]), requesting information on the configuration options available in India and got the following response: "... unfortunately we don't have an expert who would be able to respond to you. We would like you to please call 1800 3000 9991 where an expert will be handle your query and give you the best possible advice.  ..."  - Not the most encouraging of emails. And the 'expert' team at 1800 3000 9991 was not very competant. They could confirm only the configuration that was available in stock and could not even confirm if other options (see below) were either out-of-stock or not-launched/not-available in India. Could somebody help me out with the following?Processor: Are the i7-6820HQ & Xeon E3-1505M options available?Display: Is the 4k IPS non-touch available?Storage options?And what are the buying options for the P50?Is 1800 3000 9991 really the only option? Or are there other resellers? Is it expected to be listed elsewhere online, where I can see and verify the configuration, rather than just trust an 'expert' over a phone call?

Right after i installed the 64 bit version, i assumed that chrome already had such a version released, but after a closer inspection i realised it was still a 32 bit one. After looking further into the matter i found out Google only released it for Linux users, which is beyong my reasoning.

After that, i tried firefox, which apparently had a 64 bit version available, yet it asked for no apparent reason for me to give my administrator name and pass, which were incorrect according to the installer, and it exited. It eventually crossed my mind to right click and select 'run as admin' and it worked fine.

Also, i have noticed the built in IE browser is 32 bit aswell, which seems odd.

On top of all those, is the information that adobe flash player does not support 64 bit browsers true? EDIT: i tried using the 64 bit version of firefox to browse youtube, but it keeps saying i need an additional plugin, i install the adobe plugin, yet it keeps giving me the same error, which to my mind means adobe does not support 64 bit yet?

Hi as of yet I have not seen any real support for the 64 bit browsing, so for the time being you will have to live with the 32bit unless someone else knows of a answer

well just been in touch with support to find out if a new bios is coming out to support graphics cards that most people have. (HD5450 nothign over powerful) Sorry not suported in any way, only 3 crappy cards are supported officially. Basically told to sling hook Remind me not to buy IBM again from the total lack of support or updates.PCI-E standard - not if your IBM

I'm trying to open a port so I can set up my FTP. I've tried port forwarding, port triggering, etc. and no one can ping me. I set up the port as 21 and, using the router's IP address, which isn't my dynamic IP address from the ISP, I'm so firewalled I can't get out.

I did go to whatismyip.com and got a number, which I pinged and got results on all four packets. When I run IPWatch, I get the router's 192.168._._ number.

BTW....this is a Dell 2350 Broadband Router -- brand new.

The wonderful thing is that Dell Support WON'T support Advanced settings -- they DON'T KNOW HOW! However, for $40, they will trnasfer me to a technician who can help me. Figure that one out. For a $70 router, I can't even get support to set it up. I'm dealing with tech support in India, so have the language problem and don't feel I should have to pay for something that the salesman assured me I could do (which was to be able to set up an FTP).

Presently I'm working on a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop with an Inspiron 8600 laptop and okay there re file sharing, etc.

I know I can't ping myself and even called my ISP provider who tried to see if he could see (ping) any or all of the ports. I'm freakin' stuck and MADD AS HELLLLLLLL at DELL!

A:Dell Broadband 2350 Router & lack of Support

You don't need to worry about quoting the "192.168._._ number" - everyone on the planet using NAT uses that (well nearly everyone!). It's the public dynamic IP address you may want to withhold from the rest of us!

For port-forwarding you need to set-up in the router port-forwarding to the LAN IP address of the PC on which your Titan server is operating NOT the IP address of the router. Your external user tries to FTP to your public IP address, that hits the router and the router forwards as per its config to the device on your LAN running your server: that way the external user gets through the firewall without knowing the internals of your LAN. If you have a dynamic public IP address that's obviously going to change from time to time (it does what its says on the box! - it's dynamic) which can make access for external users difficult -- so you may want to look into a Dynamic DNS service (such as offered free at www.dyndns.org or www.no-ip.com) where you can get a domain name and your external users use that rather than an IP address and the DynDNS service keeps the domain name in line with the changing public IP address.

On the ping question: it may be that the router is configured to not respond to pings from the internet - some/many routers have this facility (for security reasons) and it is often the default but I do not know the model in question. If you have the possibility in the management GUI too enebale/disable ping you can switch on... Read more

I have a household with Two Dell desktops and Three laptops the oldest laptop being a 37 month old N5110.  Kids in school you know the drill.  Of course the oldest is mine, the purchaser, the N5110, After reading about Dell not supporting this product for Windows 10 software update. I pulled my old Sony from the retired computer pile in my home office, and with a few auto updates I got a reservation for Windows 10,  So this past week I decided that if Dell drops the N5110 upgrade path I'm dropping Dell from my approved vendor list, Designating Dell to be just another Apple, stranding its customers by not providing a migration path.  The reasoning behind the Intel / Microsoft PC compared to alternatives in the 80;s was the future upgrades.  I have the Intel CPU & MS O/S but I guess I screwed up by purchasing Dells.
Oh I even tried the BIOS fix,  I already have that version installed.  I guess I just wait to see what Dell does after reading N5110 post I'm afraid that I'll have to select another Vendor, I did it to Apple in the 80's, But I'll stay with Windows and find another preferred hardware vendor if they strand this laptop with no future.  I think it is funny that someone defined the laptop lifecycle at three years at dell. Plus I use Dells in the office.

I have a similar problem.  The only laptop i have is N5110 Inspiron. It was one of the best configurations of that time. 
I am very much unhappy about the BIOS compatibility issue which stops me upgrading to windows 10. 
I blame both Microsoft and Dell for this. Now its like none of them wants to take up the responsibility to provide a fix. If this has to be the trend in future it will become a norm to washout devices after every 3 years. Which is not value for money. 
I hope dell comes up with a upgrade to BIOS or they reachout to Microsoft to fix the issue and upgrade on what ever is existing. I know its not a joke  cause every hour spent writing that code for a 1 person would cost too much of money.But again its  their duty.

Does anyone have an email address that will put me in contact with someone in Canada? I spent three hours trying to get help that wasn't through the telephone, telling half a dozen people that I couldn't use the phone to get help. Technical support won't chat with people in Canada and I just jumped through a dozen hoops, only to end up in the same place. I'm sorry to write this kind of issue here on a public forum, but was forced to and I can see that I'm not alone In a short words ... after a long service repair of my Yoga 710 and a long way of proveing to the seller that the hardware has a defect (fan is blowing straight to the microphone making noise), I've got money refound on 03.04.2017 !Total time that I was without funds and without a laptop lasted from 10.01.2017 to 03.04.2017 (83 days, including Lenovo Service Support - 32 days). I have got only one sorry word from Lenovo nothing more. That's all for my effort to contact them, explain everything, loosing my nerves, all invonvieniences at my bussiness etc. I asked finally what will you do if I want to buy new Lenovo product in the future (maybe small discount for me) but didn't get answer until today...Where should I write an email concerning complaint about Tech Support  ?

Hi guys, I will try to be as concise as I possibly can!

I've been running windows 10 for a few months now with no problems. A couple of days ago I've had the BSOD.

I didn't download or update anything (although I can't say if any changes were made in the background)

When I boot the pc the screen is fine until AFTER I log in. It's only when I get to where my desktop should be, just a black screen although I do have a mouse pointer.

I've rebooted in safe mode (no change) and safe mode with cmd prompt.

I can't run task manager, every time I try it opens for a split second the disappears.
I ran commands chkdsk and sfc /scannow

My restore points were all deleted (from standard restore, maybe there is a way to find older files still?)

Also tried running windows updates from the command prompt with no luck.

The only other thing I can think of is throwing my computer from my 12th floor balcony, but maybe someone here could help me out first! 😩

When I open Virgin to go on the net It loads but no pictures are shown
I go to control panel-internet options-show pictures and tick- apply and the pictures appear
but each time i close virgin and reopen I have to do the same each time

For anyone who doesn't know, Microsoft thought removing NTBackup and implementing a new "user-friendly" backup utility made the most sense. From an IT perspective, this is one of the worst decisions I have ever seen. Companies have hundreds of NTBackup scripts out there and rely on this simple yet trusted technology for many backup needs. The inability to actually choose WHAT files you want to back up is beyond me.... If they wanted to eliminate NTbackup from the home versions fine.. but the new utility is useless for business versions.

I have found a free utility called "Cobain Backup" which seems to work very well...

I have read about hacks to get NTBackup working on Vista by copying the necessary file from XP. Has anyone done this? Does it run scheduled tasks fine?

We have portable backup drives for our laptop users. We only wish to backup certain folders... and the lack of NTBackup has been a problem....

any other comments???

just got myself a new HDD and so thought id do myself a nice shiny new install of Win7 as everything is backed up onto the old drive, install seemed to go fine, but when i went to use IE the ActiveX controls arent working! doesnt matter what site, Nvidia, MSN games, the ActiveX test here: ActiveX Test cane back as Activex not supported,

things I have tried:
Gone through the IE options and changed everything marked "Activex" to On or Prompt,
Taken IE off through "Add or remove Windows Features" and put it back on again,
Tried to redownload IE8 from MS and got told that y OS isnt supported, as its marked for XP and Vista only

any ideas? or is it just a bum install?

Check that the COM+ service is running. I think it might need to be.
Also open gpedit.msc (the the local group policy editor), check that 'Turn Off ActiveX opt-in prompt is 'not' enabled (not configured is the default and this is ok too).

I am trying to install W7 on my notebook, but cannot find all the drivers needed. When I open Device Manager the following drivers are missing: PCI DeviceSM Bus ControllerUniversal Serial Bus (USB) Controller They are not listed on the HP website for the notebook, I can't get them from Windows update and have no idea where else to get them (The G3 has an AMD processor, but the AMD driver assist tool will not find drivers for anything else as AMD do not manufadture all the chips on the motherboard). The notebookis less than 2 years old and the drivers MUST be out there somewhere, can anyone help me please? KC

I was supposed to post a HijackThis log here. However, I can't get HijackThis to run completely through all of a sudden. I've run it before, and it worked, but this time it stops at "O15: Trusted Zone enumeration" It freezes and then when I ctrl-alt-del it is "Not Responding" and I have to close it. I've tried safe mode, regular mode, multiple reboots, uninstalling/reinstalling, and an old copy.... nothing worked. It ALWAYS stops at that particular spot though.

ok when i installed Win 7 on my PC it came up with "Microsoft teredo Tunelling adapter cannot start" so i followed a guide which just said uninstall it and scan for new hardware, it will sort it out, the little yellow triangle went away, i never thought anything of it,

Now however, the girlfriends got a new laptop, and i went to set up Homegroup, Homegroup is telling me IPv6 is disabled, and the troubleshooter is telling me that "the local machine administrator has disabled Teredo" now unless im very much mistaken... thats me..... any ideas how to get it back?

A:Teredo (or lack of)

If Windows said it can't start the teredo tunnel it most likely means that your router will not support the IPv6 protocol. A simple router reset will usually fix that problem. It can also be a network adaptor problem.

The problem is that it won't make your router capible of supporting IPv6 which is required for Homegroups to work properly. If it's the adaptor you should be able to update the driver for it.

Hi,

I am running a PC with 256Mb of memory.

I have discovered that according to my system I have only 33Mb of memory left. How would this affect my PC. Would it make my internet connection run slower or would it just affect applications?.

What is the best solution. Can I buy extra memory and if so how easy and costly is it. Alternatively can I free up some memory on the system that I currently run.

Any help appreciated.

I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything. I installed my sound card, but i have no sound. I checked the levels and they're all maxed out but still no sound. There was sound last night so I know the speakers arent dead.

Im running Win98SE with a SB Live sound card.

The fan and power supply went out on my home computer recently, so I replaced it myself. First time and it worked!! But there were alot of plugs and one little tiny one that I disconnected without being able to really see where it came from. The new power supply didn't have this little wire (actually 2 wires) but I put it all back in anyway. All works well except no sound. Is there an adapter I could use with one of the leftover plugs (4 wires) to make it work? I'm assuming that I need to send some power to the sound card and that must be what I unplugged. I know this sounds kind of stupid, but really I was just happy to get the computer back up, though I would like to solve the problem without buying another power supply. Thanks much!

You haven't provided the complete macro. What is frmCalendar? I don't see that in my VBA library (might be available in a later office; I still use Office97).

I suggest you try initializing sDate using DateTime.Date$ or something similar.

i have lost all sound on my pc. i started up skype to call a friend to check there's was working ok, but when i spoke to them my voice came out like a robotic donald duck. then after my sound stopped and i cannot get it back, although the system says its working. please help

Why dont you go back to its original windows version (home premium) by restoring to factory defaults and see if that fixes the problem? Or, post a WGA report so we can start looking @ the issue.

I am running XP on my computer at my student house. However it was running slowly the other day, so i logged off, and logged on again only to find that the desktop had vanished, i can still see the background, but not the start bar or any icons. I clicked ctrl+alt+delete and looked at processes and noticed that explorer was not running, which it normally does. Through the ctrl+alt+delete function I clicked on new process and navigated to explorer.exe, and this ran, caused the start bar to flash up, and then vanish quickly. I tried re-installing XP but had no luck, does anyone have any idea what has caused this, and how I can fix it. I also tried using system restore, but have no points to restore to, somehow. any help would be much appreciated.

I`ve just had my mates tower unit dropped on my lap and a look of chagrin crossing her face. "Help, it won`t boot and I`ve had my lappy robbed".

The system is an AMD AthlonXP 2200, 1x120GB IDE, 512MB DDR 2100, AGP 6600.

I get past POST drive detection and then come across a blank screen. I tried reinstalling windows but cannot get past System is checking your current configuration without the dread blank screen.

As a footnote I disconnected the IDE Hard drive and the install disk started to do it`s thing.

Hard Drive buggered?

Sounds most likely... can you test the drive in another machine? Also, is the disk showing up in POST and the BIOS?

Thats the message i got in device manager with this card, i cant even get it to start at all. And im trying to set it up as a second video card for a second monitor, ive had it setup like this before with the same 300/305. Any ideas of how to fix?

Im only using a second video card for a second monitor because i dont want to lose performance from my main video card by having it run dual, when all i want it for is to watch movies and stuff on my tv.

Sounds like an irq conflict in the bios.
The 5700 has dvi vga and svideo out.
I'm assuming the other card is pci 32mb?

Hi, i bought hp pavilion 550 256na in march and have only just got around to setting it up. i tried to set up my dropbox which has 77gb of data but message came up saying not enough memory?? when i checked the system "about" it only has 128gb.... surely this cant be right?? i thought this machine had 2tb and 8gb ram. Can someone help me out. surely no new pc will just have 128gb?? Go easy on me. lol Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Ben

@bf83?, welcome to the forum. Here are the Product Specifications for the computer.  If you look at the section titled "Hard Drive 1" you will see that it is a 128 GB, 3D, SSD.  Hard Drive 2 is a 2 TB HDD. The computer does have 8 GB of memory, however.  This should be enough to do anything that you want to do.  The size of the SSD should have no effect on Drop Box.  You may want to contact their Tech Support for help.  HP adds DB to their computers, but they don't support it. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I am having an issue with my wireless connection. I can connect, but I can't get a higher percentage. In fact outside of the room, I don't even come close to 100%. I am using a Vonage router that is black. Any help would be appreciated. I have an older router that didn't work with the new cable modem that I was given it is a black something from Comcast. If I reinstall the router will that make it work? Thanks

The color of the units conveys no useful information for solving the issues. Your problem sounds like wireless interference.
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.


Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.


If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?


On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

I am having the most annoying problem with our computer. It's a Sony VAIO. We have MSN. If I sign on the MSN, surf for a while, then sign off, come back, and try to sign on, instead of getting a dial tone, it automatically says "retring in 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 seconds, and keep doing this over and over and over. We have to restart the computer before we can sign on to MSN again. It also freezes up on us alot, and we have to literally turn off the power cord because the computer won't even let us turn it off. I am so annoyed. I have defragmented, and that did nothing. I have checked the settings, ect. I want to be able to sit down at my computer and sign on to the net anytime I want. Being a nice, kind Grandad, I allow my 5 year old Grandson to play games on my computer. A couple of weeks ago he lost all sound. After fiddling around for a while without success, I decided to use the Restore facility(going back a couple of days), and this did the trick. Unfortunately, he has done it again. I have gone back 2 days, 7 days and 1 month to no avail. I have checked things like the Mute button and that I have a light on the speakers. With Media Player selected the graphics show that my audio CD's are playing, but still no sounds. This is not isolated to music, but all associated sounds when turning on the computer and the "You have e-mail" message. Sincerely hoping someone can help me.

I have a 17" monitor that seems to be good in every department except the contrast and brightness.

The settings are turned right up but it still; seems to be a bit on the dark side for pictures and graphics but is OK with text .

I have it running with plug and play monitor and it seems OK apart from the darkness , it is a Mirage Model 768M which I cant find anything on the net about it , so cant download another driver.

Has anyone got any suggestions , would appreciate some feedback

Can you adjust the color setting in the monitor setup? 9300K looks brighter than 6500K.

Your monitor may also be nearing death of course.

I don't know whether this an appropriate place to post, if it's not then please tell me and Ill repost somewhere else. Anyway I have a d-link dgl-4300 router also known as a gamer lounge rig; it works perfectly for me wired, as well as on most wireless points that i care to use. However, there a few exceptions; I should first say that I have it running in its highest bandwidth which is super g mode, going at 154mbs I think (this relies on a suitable card of course). On the nearest most frequently used computer there is a wireless card installed, it has endless problems with a message saying that there is a lack of connectivity. There seems to be no sure pattern to it, sometimes it happens on every boot up, it may relent for a few more; but the problem never really goes away. Incidentally, when I rebooted the router with new firmware the problem seemed solved for a while, but recently returned. I have had this problem on previous routers, and it seems to me that it is linked to my use of the dmz setting on the router and subsequent torrent activity. Is there any fact in my theory, has anyone had the same problems? All computers are on windows the wireless card on the serially offending computer is also a d-link; and my brother and I both have dell latitude d600 laptops with wi-fi cards which seem to work fine with the router.

This is not an uncommon issue with most of the "turbo" modes on routers, they sometimes cause problems with different brands of equipment. Try configuring all of the non-802.11g stuff off in the router and see if that helps you connect to the devices you are having issues with.

General lack of response(solved)

Hi, new to these boards. I have been having a bit of trouble with my rig, i built it last November for general gaming/college work. I cant provide to much information on the specs.

Originally i was using a 400W power supply, which may have been a bit to weak for my system. I was happily surfing away when i noticed the case getting a bit hot, i thought nothing of it and loaded up "World in Conflict", not long into playing, my speakers emitted an annoying noise, then the system just shut itself down. After several attempts to reboot there was a shot of sparks out the back of the PSU, followed by the smell of burning, i was still unable to get any response from it.

I left the system to cool-down, hoping that would solve it. Later in the day i opened the case to inspect the PSU and the Motherboard, i am not to experienced with them with it being my first build, but i could see no visible signs of damage (when they burn out is it usually visible?). My next course of action was to order a new PSU, this time i got a 500W one. Hooked it all up, plugged it in, power on and no response(should the PSU fan spin if it is working? and not connected to anything? it didn't spin)

I am a bit lost with what to try next, could it be the power cable I'm using? I have no idea, please could you offer some advice?

Hi there! I've encountered a problem with my router. Here's my story:
I have a Linksys rout connected to the "main" desktop comp thru cable and two laps via wifi

Few days ago I've fried my system hdd (Vista) on the main, so I tried to plug in an old system drive with XP installed on it.
It loaded up fine, but then I noticed there's no connection of any kind in Network Connections (and it should have Local Area Connection #1 or something like that) only 1394 "connection" that i think doesn't count.
(also when I tried to repair that 1394 one it said "TCP/IP is not enabled")

When I tried to establish a connection using the router it said it should already be there, working and configured properly.
The router is plugged correctly of course.
The laps are both connected and it still works for them

I've searched the webz for a solution and found numerous threads but none of the answers really helped if there were any.

I wd be grateful for any help

You're going to have to download the drivers for your NIC card (integrated or expansion) onto that harddrive.

Hi. For about the last week I have been running into a space problem. I have partition of 24gb for vista x64 sp2 and need some help. I have downloaded some games and downloaded them to a larger partition. But when I unrar they fail to and the partition with the os (c) ends up with no space left. Whats going on?

edit: no virus, this has happened before so I reformatted and it still does this.

I think a partition of 24GB is too small for your OS and will leave you with little or no space plus stop your defrag ultility working. Suggest at least a 50GB partition.

Are you using System Restore - if so you may be able to recover some space by running Disk Cleanup and removing old System restore sets.

When I had disabled the mouse by mistake, I turned off the computer. When it came back on and was rebooting, it gave me the choice to change screen to make it easier to read. I did and then everything had a black background with neon letters. Whew! I tried to change it and now I have a white background with no color filler. My yahoo email screen is almost all white when it used to have some colors in it. Now it just has outline colors. Any ideas of what that could be? And how to fix it? By the way, I was able to enable the mouse again without a pointer using the tab key.

So, I have a Xbox 360 & Live account. It's worked perfectly yadda yadda. some time over the summer, lightning from a storm, as I assume it was, blew a fuse in my house and knocked out our internet, our phones, and completely fried my computer tower.

Since then everything's been fixed. phones are up, computers running, internet is as smooth as a baby's bottom. we got a new router a couple months ago, though. anyways, i can get onto xbox, but not live. the ethernet cord is connected to the router, which is connected to the modem. internet on the computer works perfect, but when i try to connect to live, it doesn't recognize a network at all. usually it automatically detects the IP and such, but it's been coming up blank. i'm not computer wiz, but even i know it's a bit off.

it can't be the internet, since that works for my computer. it can't be the router because i literally just bought a new one today. is the xbox fried, though i can still play offline perfectly well? is it the ethernet cord? could it be because that storm during the summer? i haven't been able to get on live since then, even though everything else is peaches. i literally can not understand for the life of me why it isn't working. i've even tried bridging it to two separate laptops. could it be the xbox itself? when i perform the connection test provided on the dashboard, it can't connect to a network at all, a network isn't even ide...
