Windows 10: Cortana gets refined, adds "Hey Cortana" feature

Q: Windows 10: Cortana gets refined, adds "Hey Cortana" feature

Quote:

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On all my pc's I now have a "get cortana for my phone" message in all the cortana action windows. How in the heck do I get rid of this? it is screwing up all my viewing habits for weather, sports score etc.

Why does microsoft keep jamming all this junk in the cortana window, I don't want anything except what I choose to have displayed.

Unless I click the microphone first. I have a brand new windows 10 computer. I've run set up to have her learn my voice and respond to Hey Cortana, but she will only hear me if I click the microphone first (and she has no problem hearing me). Googled this issue and it appears I'm not the only one with this problem and thus far Microsoft Forums have not really come up with a solution for me or anyone else, other than setting up a new account profile which didn't work. They want me to do a repair in place upgrade which means I'll have to reinstall windows 10. This is a windows 10 computer, not an upgrade. Is there any other option? Can you assist? TLDR: 100 monthly monthly users, 8 billion questions asked, 1/3 of Windows 10 users use it, it's expected that Cortana will continue to be developed and will become MORE and not less central to 10 inherent functionality. In other words, Cortana isn't going away!

"During the company's fourth quarter earnings call, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella dropped a bomb on us that's arguably bigger than any figure touted since the release of Windows 10.

"The Cortana search box [in the Windows 10 task bar] has over 100 million monthly active users, with 8 billion questions asked to date," Nadella stated plainly on the call.

Now, the Redmond campus chief didn't specify exactly how many of those users are using Cortana on the desktop with their voice or simply typing into the search box, but how much does that matter?

Regardless of their method ? granted, 100 million vocal users would go a long way to improve the virtual assistant's voice recognition ? a lot of users are tapping into Cortana's cloud-powered knowledge graph and machine learning, which will all improve the more it's used.

The figure is big enough to draw specific attention to it in an earnings call, at least.

Now, to put that into a bit more perspective, Microsoft has issued 350 million Windows 10 installs as of this May. So, theoretically nearly a third of all Windows 10 users are using Cortana.

Can Apple say the same for Siri or Alphabet for Google Now? At the ... Read more

I'm used to using Windows 7, which worked almost perfectly for me. Windows version 10 is far too "bloated!" I dislike the fact that I can't boot-up my system without the completely unnecessary 'interim' of Cortana before seeing my Login screen. I don't use Cortana for anything so, I don't believe I need it.

So, can I eliminate "Cortana" completely without corrupting my entire OS? If so, then what step-by-step procedure do I need to follow to accomplish that --completely and safely? I do not want to be forced into re-installing Windows 10 from scratch -again.

EDITED:
Note: I'm using MS Windows Home Edition.

I have 7 Windows 10 computers (4 @ office, 3 @ home). Of these 7, only 1 is having this issue. Beginning about a month ago, Cortana has started giving me a "How Can I Help?" sort of splash screen, with a "^" on the bottom to collapse into my interests. See screenshots:

Typically with all my other W10 computers, Cortana will default directly to my interests, as seen in the second screenshot. I tried a support session with microsoft, who simultaneously declared it a "new feature" while trying to fix it, unsuccessfully.

Other troubleshooting steps I've taken unsuccessfully:
elevated cmd: sfc /scannowelevated cmd: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthelevated cmd->powershell: Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest*.xml

  • Turned all cortana cards off and back on

    Hi,

I've noticed, if there is no internet connection on account login, Cortana cannot search for files and apps in my PC! When it's connected to internet (even for a few seconds), Cortana's (local) search works fine.

    Is it only for me???

P S: If you want to test, please try this:
    1. Disconnect internet.
    2. Sign out.
    3. Sign in.
    4. Still disconnected, open "Start" menu or Cortana and type...anything. Does it work?

    THNX!

A:Cortana cannot even "Search My Stuff" with no internet connection!

Never had an issue like the one you describe since 10074. I disable web search in Cortana settings and it remain the best place to search Windows architecture. I rarely pass by File Explorer. Try to sign out (equivalent to lock screen) and sign in (Internet unplugged) and no effect on Cortana stability.

I am not interested in having a "personal assistant" who reports my activities and searches back to Microsoft like some kind of Cold War era embedded spy. As far as I am aware there is nothing "Cortana" does that can't be achieved using other existing OS functionality or dedicated software.... Can Cortana be completely fenced in to share NOTHING with MS?
(If not, I'll give her the sack by turning it off.....)

Follow on question - I really thought I declined all the intrusive functionality when I installed Windows 10. In my first attempt at installation I got a looking glass where the Cortana icon is appearing now on the Task bar. Did I accidentally select the wrong option at install?

So I ask: If I follow these instructions (You can't turn off Cortana in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update | PCWorld), will this in any manner speed up my computer? I originally found out that if in order to stop the automatic web searching in File Explorer, I would first have to shut Cortana down; but as I can't fully do that, I'm looking for an alternative...if possible. Hi all!

I just built myself a new workstation computer with MS Win 10 Pro 64-bit, and have installed EAM paid, WinPatrol PLUS and HMP.A with CryptoGuard as my security setup.

    I have read a lot about Windows Cortana over at the Windows 10 Discussion Forum, and am therefore wondering;

Does HitmanPro.Alert's Anti-Keylogging feature protect against Windows Cortana, or do I just turn it off with one or several of the Privacy Tools recommended by Bleeping Computer?

Thank you very much in advance!

A:Does HitmanPro.Alert's Anti-Keylogging feature protect against Windows Cortana?

Turning off the Cortana Service via Cortana Settings, going to Speech, Inking, & Typing Settings and making sure that "Get to know me" is off, stops the collection of anything that most people would consider personal information.

You should also make a quick trip through every one of the Privacy settings that shows up along the left in the same pane that the Speech, Inking, & Typing settings do.

If you never turned Cortana on the "Get to know me" setting is likely off.  If Cortana was ever on, you can follow the link to remove any information "she" has stored on you in the cloud.

If you want a Windows Search that acts pretty much like Windows Search always has then turn off the "Include internet search results" feature in Cortana settings, too.

There's not much to "protect against" as far as Cortana goes if you simply have the service turned off and internet search results not included.

I finally upgraded to Windows 10 a week ago, and most things work fine. Cortana wakes up when I say, "hey, Cortana," then responds with "Something went wrong." Every time.

If I say, "hey Cortana, play some music," it plays music from my PC.

If I say, "hey Cortana, Open IE," it says, "Okay, here's Netbeans IDE 8.1." Then, the PC makes a "critical stop" sound, and Cortana locks up. The little dots keeps going across the top of the Cortana windows, but it never recovers.

If I say, "hey Cortana, Open Internet Explorer," it says, "Sure thing, starting Internet Explorer." Then, the PC makes a "critical stop" sound, and Cortana locks up. The little dots keeps going across the top of the Cortana windows, but it never recovers.

I give it lots of other commands, sometimes it acts like it recognizes what I'm saying and tries to do something,
"What's the weather?" "Okay starting weather.""I want to buy a Microsoft surface PC" "Okay, starting Services" or "Opening This PC."
It invariably responds, as described above with a "critical stop," and Cortana spins and spins.

After the critical stop, my only recourse is to stops Cortana from the Task Manager.

So the microphone (Microsoft Lifecam HD 5001) works with Cortana, because it wakes up, and the mic works with other apps.

    Welcome aboard, Bruce.

Check "Region" and make sure that you are still set for US English.

If that isn't the problem, then there are several solutions that MIGHT work . I advise you to scan for corrupted files:

Go to Task Manager and select File--Run New Task. Type powershell into the box and check the box giving you Admin Privileges; then hit Return. Wait several seconds for PowerShell to start up. Then Type sfc /scannow into the command line and press the [Return] key. The scan may take some time and will end with one of three results. Windows did not find any integrity violations and Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them mean there are now no corrupt files, but Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them indicates a problem.
In this latter case, type (or copy and paste) DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth into the PowerShell window and press the [Return] key. This will download files from Windows Update to replace the corrupt ones and, again, this may take some time.

    Guys,

This is a reference question to which I need an answer. Suppose you start to set up Cortona on Windows 10, but a few steps into the process the user decides, "Uhhh. I don't want to do this now." When you cancel out and open her up, she gives a "Welcome Back" notice.

How would you approach Cortona to make her forget you, and start over at the first set up screen, like setting her up from the first time for a new user? In this regard, she has no memory of a previous users likes, searched, activities, or events. Can Cortona also be programmed to recognize multiple users such as family members where she would know each family member's routine or search habits and interests?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

source: Windows 10's "Controlled Folder Access" Anti-Ransomware Feature Is Now Live

With the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update last week, the "Controlled Folder Access" that Microsoft touted in June is now live for millions of users.
As the name hints, the Controlled Folder Access feature allows users to control who can access certain folders.
The feature works on a "block everything by default" philosophy, which means that on a theoretical level, it would be able to prevent ransomware when it tries to access and encrypt files stored in those folders.
The benefits of using Controlled Folder Access for your home and work computers are tangible for anyone that's fearful of losing crucial files to a ransomware infection.
If you want to give Controlled Folder Access a go, below are the basic steps to enable it on your PC.

A:Can the "preview" windows feature on the taskbar be disabled?

I assume you mean the taskbar thumbs.

It requires a registry edit if you are confident enough to mess with registry settings.

    Open regedit.exe and navigate to

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
There should be a d word value in the right hand side named

    TaskbarNoThumbnail

set its value to 1 to turn off thumbnail previews. Reset to 0 to re-enable thumb nail previews.

A registry (.reg) file to turn off thumbs should look like this

    Quote:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "TaskbarNoThumbnail"=dword:00000001

There are many things I don't like about Windows 7, but I've been able to overcome most of them, either by settings changes, or with "Classic Shell" (Welcome to Classic Shell) which allows users to change the Win7 UI to be much more like XP.

But there is one problem I haven't been able to overcome, which is the thing circled in red below:

I think it is called a "filter" popup, but I'm not sure.

The problem I have is, I never use this, but it sure gets in the way of what I do use, specifically resizing the column widths or moving the columns. In WinXP, there is a lot more leeway when you select the right side of a column. In Win7 (due to this infernal thing) you have to select it much more precisely, otherwise that filter thing pops up instead.

If anyone happens to know exactly what this thing is called, or even better, if anyone could suggest where I might go to find a way to turn it off, that would be greatly appreciated.

A:Can Windows 7 Explorer "Filter By" feature be disabled?

Why don't you just run Windows XP? A whole lot easier then trying to change a new system to an old system...Or do this...Use the side closer to the label and not the arrow. There is a large target area for resizing on the right side of the line.

Something that has bothered me since I installed Win7 is the way WE handles folder navigation. When one clicks on the arrow next to a folder (left pane), often, the folder drops to the bottom of the left pane. And often, there is a short delay before it does so.

This irritates me to no end. I'll click on a an arrow, the sub folders drop out, I go to click on the desired folder, but suddenly the entire tree drops to bring the parent folder (whose arrow I clicked) to the bottom of the pane, leaving me to click on the wrong folder.

Does anyone find this useful in anyway? My first thought is "what were they thinking???"

At any rate, is there a hack available for this? I can live with it if I have to (as I have learned to live with Full Row Selection), but I'd really rather not.

    Thanks for any ideas.

    James

    A:Windows Explorer Navigational drop "feature"

    James,
Don't quite understand the problem because I've been unable to duplicate the problem.

Suggest you set the Folder options shown in the attached snapshot.
I more suspect your problem is caused by other software running in the background. If you are running more than one anti-virus software then 100% remove all except for one of them.

My personal advice on av software is to 100% delete all of them and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

When I open some documents then always a warning popup appears in Word 2007:

"Word hyphenation feature is not available. RUn the MS Office Setup program..."

How can I permanently and forever disable this popup (without saving the document and without re-install some other parts of MS Office)?

    Peter

A:Disable forever ""Word hyphenation feature is not avai"

In Add/Remove programs, select Microsoft Office 2007, then select CHANGE, select Advanced, select and expand Office Shared Features, select and expand Proofing Tools, select and expand English Proofing Tools (if you use English), then click on the little arrow at the side of Hyphenation and choose Run from My computer.
    Click Continue.

Setup will then install the missing component. You may need your Office 2007 CD for this.

    Hi,
I would like to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature in Win7.  I know it can be done in a classic theme by changing the "window" color".  Could someone kindly help
me out?  I searched the Internet and found some sites mentioning downloading programs, which I hesitate to trust due to potentially hidden virus.  I don't mind using regedit to change the registry.  Any hint is much appreciated.

A:How to change "Windows Explorer" dafault white backgroup color without losing the Aero theme feature?

    Hi JD,

It seems the Windows Explorer background color cannot be changed in Windows 7. However, you can see if third party software such as
    XYPLORER can achieve this.

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.

Also, you can change other window color by right clicking the desktop ->
Personalize -> Windows Color -> Advanced appearance settings… -> pull down the Item to
Window and choose the color you like -> Click OK.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Linda

Getting a bunch of false positives of "identity theft" based upon abnormal workstations that users are accessing.  Why do we know they are false positives?  The source workstation in every alert was doing Windows Updates right when the
alert hit.  The alerts say the workstation usually accesses 30-40 other workstations over CIFS.
So...this is actually normal behavior for Windows Updates with this new feature: "Windows Update Delivery Optimization".  The feature is available on Windows 10 only (which the OS in all of our alerts).  Check out this for more info on
    this feature:  https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10-windows-update-delivery-optimization
The Windows Update feature makes the workstation reach out to other workstations for its updates instead of going over the internet.  Thats the problem.  Thats whats generating the list of abnormal workstations accessed.
Any ideas on how to "teach" ATA that this is normal?

Remove the Cut button from your toolbar so you can't click it accidentally:-

Click the Toolbar Options button at the end of the standard toolbar (looks like a black triangle)
This displays a list of the buttons on show on the toolbar... any button with a tick means it is displayed
Click the cut option and it will be removed form the toolbar

hi, I am absolutely upset by this. I just received my brand new lap top from Dell this morning and when I go to Cortana she ask you to sign into your Microsoft account so she can do more (like voicing etc) unfortunately when i click sign in I get a square black empty box just sits there.
I have called dell was told I have to pay $129.00 for them to help me one time only or pay another $200.00 for software warranty.
It's suppose to be included in windows 10 and have had it maybe 3 hours at this point have had it since 9:00 a.m. this morning Haven't done anything just letting it set up.
I'm on my Dell all in one desk top and I bought it also brand new  about little over a year and Cortana works perfectly on it. it was windows 8.1 and i got the free windows 10 download for it.

So if anyone out there can help me as I'm ready to call them tell them send me a return label and skip a lap top all together. I had both miss my lap top this one was on sale got it for $242.00
Also tried Microsoft support tech but nope they say Dell should go good for it.and Dell said the software isn't put in by them not warranted only the hardware.
    Thank you in advance

    cinnaamon,
Try the various steps below to resolve this issue.
If you just made a new Microsoft account and are having this problem, then you have to verify it with your email.
You can try the information below as well.
    1. Type Manage your Accounts in the search bar
    2. Click on Your Accounts.
    3. Click on Sign in with a local account instead.
    4. Enter the Microsoft password if prompted.
    5. Follow the on screen instructions to configure Local account.
    6. Restart your PC.
    7. Follow the same steps and change to Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
    8. Sing in to Cortana, Windows store and check.
Here is another option that seem to work for some.
Type User Accounts in your search bar and select "Change User Account Control Settings"- Check your settings---if the lowest option is selected, this is your problem! Change your option to the Windows recommended option (in bold). It should be one option below "Always Notify."- Restart your computer. Upon restart, you should see that Cortana is working. But if she's not, select the Windows store icon in your taskbar.- Click the Sign in option.- Sign in and answer that you'd like to use your Microsoft Account to access the computer. - (Optional) Sign out to make sure changes have saved.- (Optional) Sign back in and all should work (see notes below if you have problems with Cortana).
If, after your change, you're having problems with Cortana because you’re u... Read more

Windows 10 asked me to logon. I used the password I had set up long ago but it did not work. I assume it does not conform to the new rules. No problem, I reset it and set up a new one! Then it asked me to enter my old password one last time. It won't take my old password or the new one. So I left it blank but that didn't work either. You would think that if one just reset the password that windows 10 would know that you don't have an old password to enter!

No problem, I set up a new account using my gmail account. Same problem! It asked for my old password even though this is a new account. I left the old password field blank as there was no old password! Nothing worked!

A:Windows 10 won't let me log on to use Cortana

Microsoft passwords transfer from Win 8.x to Win 10. You can reset Microsoft passwords at the link below. If you used a local password then you may need to reinstall Windows.
