Solved: My ADSL modem is not giving an IP address

Q: Solved: My ADSL modem is not giving an IP address

Hi everyone, having a frustrating night getting my ADSL2+ connection going. Just got a Billion 7402G modem/router delivered and I am trying to get it working on an XP PC.

My NIC card works fine, and has the latest drivers. I plug in the modem as described in the manual, and follow all configuration instructions including - Select the Obtain an IP address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio buttons.

But I am not being issued an IP address. The manual says this should just be automatic and has no recourse if it is not.

I set an IP address manually within the range of the router, and was able to logon to the modem via the webgui. But no internet access.
Billion support tells me "You should only need to login to router with default settings, navigate to Quick Start page, enter your ISP login details & apply, router should then connect, when finished save config to flash. Nothing else should be required, computer should automatically connect. Ensure that software firewalls aren't blocking access."

OK, so to do this, I need to put in the manual IP address... why is the manual saying to set my LAN connection to obtain IP and DNS setting automatically, and why is this not working for me? Anyway I change the settings to manual and reboot, try the suggestion. All firewalls are disabled.

I have now manually entered an IP address for my PC that allows me to login to the router. Without doing this I cannot even get to this setup page so that is why I ask why I have had to figure out to enter an IP address instead of selecting the "Obtain IP Address and DNS Server automatically" as stated in the Billion PDF manual. So now I have logged in to the router, and have entered my credentials. I had a "successful" window pop up, and a notice baloon saying "A new device is now available on your network."
It says the PPPoE Connection is established, and there is a section that says a ping to google is successful. But I have no internet access.

OK, reconnected everything - power, telephone line... left LAN cable unplugged and rebooted computer. Turned on modem waited until all lights stay lit. Connected LAN cable, and it still just hangs on aquiring network address, I'm not getting issued an IP address.

OK so I tried plugging the LAN cable from the laptop to the Billion and it is the exact same problem. No IP address being issued. If I manually set an IP address, I can login to the router but not connect to the internet.

Interestly this also happend with wireless. I found my wireless network in the list of available networks when I put my wireless card back in my laptop. So I tried to connect and I could connect to router, but was not issued an IP address. I could login to the modem.

Latest firmware installed.

So I ended up spending all night on trying to just get an IP address assigned to my PC from the Billion 7402G modem/router. Going into the properties of my Local Area Connection, selecting TCP/IP properties and setting "Obtain IP & DNS Servers automatically" is the 3rd step of the instruction manual and I cannot get past it. Nowhere in these instructions does it say to manually assign an IP address so if I had not have figured this out for myself then I would not have even seen the router setup page. It is not a defective NIC as I have attemped to connect via 2 different PC's.

I know the following should be true
- The router should act as a DHCP server, issuing IP addresses. I have confirmed the the DHCP setting is turned on to DHCP Server.
- If I manually eneter IP address and manage to be able get into the router setup page and enter my username and password for my ISP in the Quick Setup Page, I should then have internet access.

6 hours of staring at "aquiring network address" is getting me down - any advice greatly appreciated. I have created a "support ticket" with Billion - www.billion.com.au/helpd...b3RtYWlsLmNvbQ==
Any advice? Thought I would give Tech_Support_Guy a shot. Cheers.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm trying to get Ubuntu 8.04 online and to do this I need to know the private IP address of my modem, which is an NEC NTA-3110 ADSL.

The problem is that my network card is detecting a private IP address automatically (169.x.x.x) and this is not quite in the range that I would expect. Normally it is in the 192.168.x.x range. The reason it is doing this is because the router is not offering any private IP addresses.

I've googled extensively. I know this information should be in the documentation or the manual, but the ISP gave me neither. I know I should ask the ISP but they won't have anything to do with Linux. They just tell you to run the Windows set up disk.

If anyone could offer any help on this, I'd appreciate it very much.

Can't connect to Internet, my modem is dishing out a private IP address and suber class b mask. I need to know the regular IP address and mask for Comcast but I have a feeling the modem is crapping out on me.

A:Comcast modem sb5100 giving private IP address.

Is the address 169.254.0.x ?

A view of your IP address (ipcoinfig /all) will help. You might try restarting your modem, or find out if you're getting a dynamic or static address from your ISP.

You could also have a router/modem combo device. Just realized that you posted the model. Its not a combo device.

More information will be needed to actually help you.

One last thing is to make sure that your ISP can contact your modem. You will have to call them to test the connection.

Hi, my friend is in Japan, and he's signed up for NTT's ADSL service, They say he can 'rent' a modem, but he would need to get a router too if he wishes to use more computers. However he doesn't want a 'multi-box' solution, he wants it in 1 box (like in other countries), a combination ADSL Router/Modem with Wifi. However, he cannot buy them in a few computer stores he has visited. I am visiting him soon, and we're trying to understand if I bring over an ADSL router, if that would work.. I know about the power limitations, but that aside, can it work?

ps. Thinking of bringing something like the following models ( I will purchase once I know for sure )...
Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem
Belkin ADSL Modem with Built-in 125g Wireless Router
Linksys by Cisco WAG54GS Wireless-G ADSL Modem Router

pps. I see a lot of modems listed on Amazon with ADSL2, I don't think they have ADSL2 in Japan (according to wikipedia), would ADSL2 modem work with ADSL.?

MANY MANY Thanks if anyone can answer this

I've currently got a 512kb/s adsl connection but will be moving to a faster 1mb/s connection in next 2 months. In meantime I need to get my other PC to share same connection. So must be wireless. As I understand it a 4 port wireless adsl router means that basically you have an adsl modem that not only controls upload/download link to the internet but lets u plug in 4 PC's hardwired into modem? and then as well as that connect wirelessly?

I'm only looking to connect two PC's to it...one hardwired in and the other wireless equipped with a USB wireless stick.

Would this be suitable?

A:Sharing internet using ADSL. Which router/adsl modem to buy?

I suppose this is what your ISP is trying to sell you..

It will probably work, but I would recommend a product from a brand manufacturer who will actually release patches and support you after two years.

Look for similar products from Linksys, 3Com, SMC, D-Link, Netgear

I am staying at my brother's house right now. They have Embarq DSL and have a EQ-660R ADSL Router (that's what they call it. I wouldn't call it a router). On a typical day, you can expect it to loose internet connectivity multiple times per hour. It will usually find a signal and reconnect within a couple of minutes. I have never had DSL, only cable. Is this something that is typical with DSL, or is it probably something wrong with the modem/router. I have noticed this modem on ebay for only a couple of bucks. Would it be worth picking one up, or is this something he is going to have to deal with as long as he has DSL? Thanks for the help.

This is a friend's computer, Dell Dimension desktop 3.0 GHz, Win XP (Home). He can not connect to the internet. He has a Linksys ADSL 2 modem, and when connected through ethernet cable, the DSL light is on, but packets sent or received are in the hundreds, and he can not connect to any site. He is with France Telecom, and they checked the line, which is fine.

I had a spare modem (Zyxel P-660 ME) provided by Sunrise (in Switzerland), which I tried to connect to his computer. No success. When I type 192.168.1.1, it asks for three things, username, user password, and system password. The first two we know, but the third? Tried 1234 (the default password for the modem). Did not work. France telecom helpline also did not know what system password was required.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can post ipconfig /all, and any other information needed through my computer.

I am running a laptop with Windows XP PRofessional SP2 and an internal Intel Pro Wireless network card. The network is provided by a Belkin ADSL router/modem running 802.11g and serving a network of up to three machines at a time.

I have recently been forced to re-install the machine from scratch and, ever since, I am getting strange problems with the modem. When I first switch on, everything is fine and I can use the Internet normally for as long as I want. However, if I run an application that doesn't directly require an Internet connection (Word, Excel, Visual studio, any game etc) and subsequently try to access the Internet, the modem connection has gone and only a power cycle of the unit will get it back. The Router continues to work normally (share files, see other machines on the network, access the router etc).

Anyone got any idea what might be happening here? Before the re-installation the system was rock solid and I used to get modem problems only once every few months!

Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice please.

I have just had ADSL broadband enabled at our new home but the modem supplied by the provider is a USB modem. Heres the rub, I do not wish to have to trail cable throughout the house to use the internet, The only phone point is in one room, the main desktop is in another, and the laptop wherever.

Is it possible, if I purchase a wireless modem, to set it up in one room unconnected to a computer and access the internet wirelessly from the desktop pc and the laptop from whichever room they are in?
I presume initially that I would have to use the laptop to set-up, but would I then be able to remove the laptop and still have the connection?

I already have a Belkin wireless router from our previous home but there is no USB port on it and I cannot locate any means to convert from USB to RJ45, presumably because of the power requirements of USB.

Anyone any clues on this?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

I'm trying to use a router/modem to be only a router...
I'm using Siemens SL2-141 which has an ADSL input but im connected to a cable input modem which is - Thompson TCM425.
I want to use the Siemenss wireless option but i cant seem to make it work!

what i've done so far:
My Thompson TCM425 is connected to the internet via MPLS (direct connection, no need for a VPN dialer), I connected it into the LAN2 in the Siemens router (Ethernet connector). I connected the Siemens router LAN1 to the computer (Intel Network card - Ethernet connector).

Thats for the wires.

on the computer -
LAN is the intel network card which is connected to the LAN2 in the router.
Wireless Network connection - I've installed a USB wireless device on the computer to try and connect to the wireless router. I set the IP's manually as shown in the IPCONFIG.(maybe my manualy config is wrong?)

on the router -
I've changed the advanced configuration and disabled the ADSL option
Also, I turned off the DHCP.
This is sposed to make the device a router alone.
The strange thing is that when i use the LAN (Intel card on the computer) I have access to the net but when i try to connect via wireless i get 'Limited or no connectivity', I've done a check and seems like the wireless connection wont get an IP and so I can't access the net via wireless.

Hello all,
I recently purchased a Belkin N Wireless Modem Router with a single ADSL input and 4xRJ45 outputs. I have an old Belkin 54g Router at the moment and wanted to upgrade. Before returning the item I would like to know if it is possible to convvert the RJ45 lead output from the cable mobem to the ADSL input of the router. I've had a look on forums and a lot of the answers seem to be way more complex but without answering this question.

VPI/VCI - 0/33
Address type - DHCP

ADSL mode
G.dmt

All works fine except for periodically lost connection only from 192.168.1.2 (web browser doesn't load the page).
Computers see each other and there are no problems when copying smth in any direction.
Besides, there is a specific behaviuor for both PCs. When using QIP (russian ICQ client) connection
seems to be obtained, but the contact list remains empty and finally the application says it can't connect.

Hello,
First post here. I have a rather peculiar issue.
When I plug my computer to my ADSL modem, I can access the internet with no problems; however, when I plug in my wireless router to the modem, some websites do not load (my bank's website, some government sites, my work's citrix interface, etc). As soon as I unplug my router and plug directly to the modem, the websites are accessible again.
Now, I have three desktops, two of these connected via wireless, one hard wired. All of them present the same problem when the router is plugged. My laptop has no problems connecting to any website, even when connected to the router via wireless or hard wired.
Is there a problem with my desktops' settings? Like I said, the laptop works fine.
My modem:
TP-Link TD8840T
My router:

I run out of ideas, please help.

hi guys,

i previously made a thread about buying a wirless router (http://forums.techguy.org/networking/916610-connecting-usb-only-adsl-modem.html). From that thread i have decided that im going to buy a router with intergrated adsl modem. i made this thread because i dont want to go through the hassle of returning a item bought of the internet. I had my eye on this router: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Wire...ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1271498847&sr=1-3-spell. Firstly i wanted someone to check that this is a wirless router with intergrated adsl modem.

I also wanted to know how i will have to set this router up. do throw away my adsl modem that i have now? or i will i need to keep that connected? Would i need to insert my modem into that router or will i just need that all in one wireless router connected to my pc and thats it?

Im very confused about my broadband. i dont know whether it is dial-up or adsl. i know for a fact that i am using the speedtouch 330 adsl usb PPP modem, but under Network connection orange broadband is listed under Dial-up (i will try and post pictures to help explain what i mean). and also i have to use software to connect to the internet, and its programmed to connect to the internet by using the speedtouch 330 adsl usb PPP modem. When the router arrives will i be able to change this so that it connect using the new router?

Any help would be appreciated. i will try and upload images to help explain what im talking about.

Thankyou

A:Connect a Wireless Modem to ADSL modem for Wifi

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If ther... Read more

Charter up my internet price and told me they would put me on a promo plan if I came in and got one of their modems. I picked up the modem (Cisco DCP3008) yesterday and hooked it up tonight. I went through that and the last step it said it need to restart the modem to finalize. The modem restarted and came online, however the browser never indicated the processed had finalize. I call Charter, we wired the modem directly to my laptop and got a connection. I thought things were good. I hooked back into the router restarted the modem, all lights came on, started the router and no IP address. I went into setup and clicked clone MAC address and hit save, still no IP address after going to status, dhcp release and dhcp renew.

I reset the router back to factory settings and it still would not pull and IP address. The router worked great before the new modem. Any suggestions to get my router to pull an IP address?

Okay first I very much doubt that the modem cares whether you are using Vista or not, so that's something to disregard.

Is the hardware a "Speedtouch 330 Modem" from the UK ? Googling indicates this hardware is being provided by an ISP ?

If so, your best source of information is the ISP. Check to see if they have configuration instructions on-line, or call Tech Support for assistance.

The internet works well on the computer, but stops working after an hour or so on the Laptop. Can anybody help?

Hi Guys,

Long time Without a Prob.....Till Now

Like the title says, i dont know if its a Hub or Adsl Modem Prob.....

When i Transfer Large amount of files (withIn 3gb) on the network my whole network goes down even the 2nd comp, at the same time i have to reset the hub (turning It off) and the ADSL modem just to get connection back from the 2 comp and internet.....

I Have a Netcomm ADSL2+ and a Generic 5 port Hub.

Now i dont know if its the modem or the hub....can some one show me the light on this problem.......

I Can just buy one or the other but if my ADSL modem is running ok i will buy a New Hub (Maybe the 1gb 5 port) if not then i will need info on a GOOD ADSL+ Modem....

Hi,
I'm planning on getting ADSL soon and I'm trying to work out what sort of ADSL modem would be ok. I want to use two computers with the modem but the phone jack is about 6 metres away from the computer.

Would a wireless ADSL router allow me to have two computers access the internet at the same time? Do I need anything special to have my computer work with a wireless unit like the one here http://www.billion.com.au/html/xdsl/7500g.htm? Would using something like this mean I don't have to have a cable running from the phone jack to my computer (like I do now lol)?

My computer has XP Home and the network card (if I looked up the right thing) is a Realtek TRL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.

Any comments you can give would really help.

Thanks

A:ADSL modem

You would need wireless network cards in both pc as well to use the wireless unit.

I dont really understand how the whole adsl thing works like "modem trying to sinc" e.t.c.
If i plug my usb adsl modem in and the exchange HAS been enabled will the modem sinc and the adsl light stay green all the time ( or whatever it does ) or will it only do it once we get to the 7/8/03 when my account with Freedom2surf (isp) starts ?

A:Adsl FROG modem

The DSL line needs to configured by your local telco...

I imagine that it will be done before 7/8/03--- Im assuming thats Aug. 8, 03

Until the line is configured... the ready light should just blink (because its not synching to anything) Once it synchs (and your account has been activated) you should be ready to go.

Enjoy High Speed!

I have a Zhone 6211-I3-200 ADSL Bridge/Modem hooked up to my PC through an Ethernet cable. My internet was working fine and I tried to access the web-based setup page of the modem to open some ports on the built in firewall. It asked for the user name and password which was something other then the default admin admin combo as stated in the PDF manual. So I attempted to do a hard reset and restore the modem to its factory setting. After holding the reset button for approx. 30 seconds it did its little reset cycle only now not only can I not connect to the internet, I cant even connect to the modem. I cant access the log in screen for the modem, I cant even ping the modem from the PC. I double and triple checked the cables and wires, the auto-configure settings in the network connections, and tried using the windows connection repair function which says it cant renew my IP address. I've reset the modem again several times, and unplugged it to clear any cache memory it may have and still nothing. I've ran out of ideas and everything that usually works to fix internet issues has failed. Is there anything that I can try before I call the local service company? Thanks in advance.

A:ADSL Modem Issue

I suspect the you've erased your connection parameters, and the only way to restore them will be to contact your ISP at this point. Obviously, if the name/password were not the defaults, they probably wanted to restrict users from tinkering with the modem settings.

Hi There

Newbie to these forums but have done some research within but can not find answer.

I have just purchased a Dell optiplex sx270 running XP home sp 3 from ebay for a friend. Before giving it I have updated it on my home network connected to my cable modem and router with no problems.

Taking it to her house the pc will not see her Maplin adsl2+ usb modem 4 port router/switch which works fine with her previous pc. I have tried connecting via USB and ethernet to no avail. I just get the cable is disconnected message/low connectivity.Whilst this is happeneing the modem-router looses the adsl light and searches across the 4 inputs.

At this point I found this lovely forum where a common starting point seems to be to do a stack reset so I did this as directed but to no avail.

I have done ip config onto a word document but cant work out how to upload it to here.

However none of the normal ip stuff is on there as it says media disconnected for the local area connection.

Hope you can help

Regards.

Fugi

Greetings techguy(s)-

Forgive me for asking what is likely old-hat stuff.

Given a) a Zoom model 5615 ADSL Bridge modem currently Internet-connected; b) a Win XP-Prof.-SP3 computer currently connected to the modem (via the Ethernet interconnection) and via that to the Internet; and c) another XP-SP3 computer, nearby and currently not so connected but also containing Ethernet capability, how can I most readily interconnect all 3 items so that d) either computer can access the Internet and e) each computer can "see" the other one for the purpose of interchanging files, making backups from computer #2 to a removable USB HD on computer #1, etc.?

Should be a slam-dunk but...knowing Windows, perhaps not...?

when I unplug AC Adapter from my notebook my adsl modem restarts... it never happened before... pls help :S

A:ADSL modem restart

Replug the laptop charge into a power strip with an on/off switch and
then power it off before unplugging.

When the laptop is charging, especially if the battery is very low, the removal
of the A/C adaptor from the laptop creates a SPARK and this creates RFI;
Radio Frequence Interference. A wireless ADSL modem may take the RFI
and --- do any number of interpretations.

Hi!

Now I once again have a new question.
Can I limit the different network ports (1-4) ul/dl speed on my modem? -so that for ex ports 1-3 has "full speed" and port 4 is limited to max 100kB/s dl and 20kB/s ul.
I have a TeleWell TW-EA501 and here is the manual for it but I just don't get it (in English on page 14)

hello this is uday and New is this site.i am facing problem with 3 public ip in one adsl modem it is possable or if possable tell me how

A:3 public IP in one ADSL modem

That's call a Virtual Ethernet Interface but requires three sources to feed the virtual addresses, eg:
Code:

--- 192.168.1.x network ------+
--- 172.16.10.x network ---+ |
--- 10.101.23.x network -+ | |
| | |
common switch ---- [B]systemX[/B] with Virtual Interfaces

Then systemX can have one NIC which has a real ip address on (say) the 192.168.1 net,
and virtual addresses for the 172.16.10 and 10.101.23 net

The source networks could just as easily be public ISP connections thru separate modems
(which would require 3x DSL lines and modems for example).

here's a reference for How-To on Linux

and a reference for Win/XP
