Advanced Help Needed with BIOS Update

Q: Advanced Help Needed with BIOS Update

Client machine

Compaq Presario C551NR laptop
Vista Home Basic SP2
1 GB RAM: 512 DDR2 "533 SO DIMM" + 512 DDR2 "PC5300" (533 is the factory stick, 5300 is upgrade)
all other hardware is original factory build
Issue (total Owner error, btw)

Factory BIOS
BSOD with 0x8e when attempting Normal Boot and Last Known Good
Safe, Safe/Cmd, Safe/network all run properly

Have updated all drivers (including network, processor, video, audio, CD, HD, and modem)
uninstalled and reinstalled fresh copies of Java, Flash, Shockwave, Quicktime, Adobe Reader
uninstalled Yahoo Msgr, Zoosk Msgr, Yahoo toolbar, Quizulous toolbar, corrupted MagicJack
installed Firefox 5 (I know: just got the flag for 6, but it can wait)
Ran RAM and Processor diagnostic in Safe and both checked out fine
Ran HD diagnostic from BIOS and it checked out fine
Spent the weekend manually cleaning the following infections:

Hotbar adware
clickpotato adware
Winlock trojan
VISTA Antispyware 2012
fake Windows Defender (pretty sure this was the vector of entry)
smitfraud.c
Revsci
using the following programs (and some old fashioned 'elbow grease'):

AVG 2011 (command line in Safe)
MBAM
SSD
CCleaner
ESET online
rkill (run in safe and safe/network)

I have a few other tools downloaded, but they will not run in safe. All of the above are currently scanning clean - not a guarantee of a clean system, I am well aware, but I'm limited now until I can get it into normal boot.
I've actually seen this issue on a few other older laptops and was able to Flash BIOS by burning an autorun CD and giving priority to the optical drive....that's not working in this case. Also tried setting rkill to Startup, again with no joy. Crash is occurring before anything can really launch.

I've done it once before, but I can't remember HOW I did it: I need to get to the text interface under VISTA (basically bypass VISTA completely) and launch the disk from there. How do I get into the interface without going through VISTA (since I can't use Normal at all and I can't Flash from Safe/cmd)?
fwiw: factory restore d: does not exist on this system and the disks are lost so a reinstall is not currently an option. Fairly certain a BIOS update will fix it, if I can only get it to Flash. Any ideas?

edit: wasn't sure where exactly to post this so put it here.
edit2: add hardware specs

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Advanced Help Needed with BIOS Update

I'm a software geek so I'm a bit out of depth with advanced hardware Dx, but a HW buddy of mine suggesting pulling the HD to verify the board....before doing so I swapped the RAM sticks (moved the original from bottom slot to top and new from top to bottom) and compressed air'd the entire section.

removed HD, blew out bay, and powered on. Displayed Compaq splash, auto refreshed to display splash again, auto refresh to solid black with rapid cursor at top left corner. Can hear and feel the fans spinning, but otherwise nothing. Does this confirm BIOS problem (as I suspected) or is it something else? (would call the buddy, but he's at the movies with his cell off :X)
edit: mep O_O f10 much? In BIOS with HD physically removed....factory is v F.14a, upgrade is v F.24a, right now it's showing v F.15 - now I really am lost.

Hi All,

Really hoping someone can help me with this.

My old HDD was failing so i cloned the entire drive before it failed. - Just in time too.

I ordered a new drive - its a WD scorpio black - Advanced format.

Unfortunately I'm unable to recover my image to this new drive.

Also I'm unable to do a re-install with the original recover cd also as it doesn't have service pack 1 and that means it cant recognise the HD either.

Anyway id prefer to be able to restore my image and not do a re-install anyway if possible.

So my question is this:

Is there a bios update i can apply to my pc other than the 2.00 version which is available that will include options for changing the disk options from ide - ahci ?

This is the only fix i can think of - bearing in mind i don't have an OS installed so alignment tools are not an option also another fix; the - Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers wont work as i have an AMD athlon processor.

So is there any BIOS i can flash my computer with to enable mentioned options?

I do have a method to flash the bios with an OS so that's not a problem.

Also any other suggestions to get a work-around on this more than welcome.

Thanks : )

Hi guys,

I'm debating if I should update my BIOS, I've not done it before but would feel confident in doing so.

I was checking the m/b site the other day for any updated drivers and had a look at the BIOS update section. If there weren't any aplicable to me then I wouldn't have even bothered thinking about it but there is. I have the Devil's Canyon i5 4690K. I'm not having any problems with the system. Any advice would be brilliant. Thank you.

Z97-K BIOS 0330
1. Enhance compatibility for new Anniversary Edition(G3258) and Devil's Canyon CPU(i7-4790K, i5-4690K).
2. Optimize overclocking function and performance for new Anniversary Edition(G3258) and Devil's Canyon CPU(i7-4790K, i5-4690K).

I am hoping to get some help from you guys when it comes to updating my BIOS as I have never done this before. I used CPUID to check my current version of 2/8/06. When I go to my mobo's web site, it says I am behind by 20 updates. When I looked at the most current one, it says I need to download the one b4 the current one. I tried to do this but when I downloaded it, and tried to run it, I get the following msg "the BIOS version you are installing is older than your system's current BIOS. Do you want to continue".
Now I am confused by this and am hoping to get some help. Here is the link to my mobo:

I have a new Lenovo ThinkCentre E73 SFF i5-4460S, 16GB RAM, 240GB Solid State Drive, Win7 Pro 64 Desktop. Anytime the ambient temperature is 77F/25C or above, my fan cycles every few minutes. As it is spring time here, temps are only going to get hotter and the fan is annoying. My old Lenovo PC which did not have a solid state sat in the same place as the new one was silent except when I first started it up.

I don't think it's a dirty fan, heat sink or intake as the PC just over a month out of the box. Some research yielded a bios update; yet a lot of people say unless you absolutely have to, don't touch the bios; messing it up will brick the PC.

I've also have some Bluetooth issues which can be found here. Also, unless I have a USB keyboard plugged in, I stall for about 30 seconds at the bios screen. It's a hunch but I think all this is connected to maybe needing an update. I checked my bios date; 04/13/12. Lenovo's website reveals an update 12/29/15 and can be found here.

A:Fan kicks on a lot. Possible Bios update needed?

As you say it is only just over a month since you bought it
I have a new Lenovo ThinkCentre E73 SFF i5-4460SClick to expand...

My advice is to return it.
Such problems have existed on this family of Lenovo`s for some years and not by any means has the BIOS flash solved the problem for all.
Also the CPU was only launched in February 2014
Although as you say the latest BIOS/UEFI is
FCKT77A
?30?/?12?/?2015

The problem was first addressed in BIOS updates before that and I cannot understand how the computer can be supplied just a month ago with a firmware version that according to you is 2012 when the CPU was as I said only launched 2014.
I suggest you put that question to the supplier.
I am not suggesting that the latest firmware flash should have been made before the computer was sold, but clearly it was manufactured sometime after Feb 2014 so IMHO the firmware version should have been the latest then available, as Lenovo knew about the problem with the fan and usb function.

This box came with Win7 home premium.  I did an update to Win10, which took "forever", which shortly corrupted and rendered itself and the Win7 backup unaccessible.  In trying to recover, I installed Linux Mint.I've since found that Win10 needs a bios update, and found such at this website and d/l'ed to another computer, and the Asus website now no longer has anything at all for the M3900G.I am going now to try to update the BIOS, but the process found uses Rufus so it's a double process to make a Rufus DOS disk plus adding the BIOS update to that, and then bring it onto this Acer box. I've done my due diligence on this process so far, but this is way differenc from the "good old days", so I'd appreciate any input.

Hello there, I recently bought a used Lenovo M72e Form Factor Desktop CPU.Its Machine Type is 3664A13 and Serial number is PB6FAF2. It is running F1KT25AUS 08/23/2013 Bios version. I want to update the bios to latest version. I saw the lenovo support site and found many versions for it. Now my understanding is that that latest version which starts with F1K should be the one compatible with my PC. I found this file on the pagehttps://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_bios/f1jy71usa.exe Now it does start with the correct F1KT and this is the Version F1KT71A. My problem is that my installed BIOS shows AUS at the end while this version Shows USA at the end. I have tried many things changing Country on the top right corner of the page but every time only this file shows up. Here is my question. Can I install the USA version of the file on my computer? Will it be safe?  If not, where can I find the correct BIOS for my PC. Thank you very much

Posting my question here because I think that this board is one of the best on the internet.
I have a pcchips m757lt motherboard with sis 630 chipset. This motherboard has both the socket 370 and slot 1 for the processors/cpu. According to the manual I can use a maximum of p3 1.13ghz and celeron 1.1ghz(fcpga coppermine). Right now I am using a celeron 433mhz in the socket.
As I want to upgrade my processor I went to check with pcchips website and found a bios update there. This update says that it has support for tualatin celeron . This bios update also has support for sis630te chipset which has tualatin support.
My question is if I upgrade my bios will I need an adapter(powerleap, evergreen etc) to use a celeron tualatin 1.4 ghz ? OR can I just buy the cpu and simply put it in the socket 370 ?

The support center doesn't allow an option to update the K330 OS to Win10 (which I've had installed over a year now) and I would like to update the BIOS.  Currently installed I have: BIOS Version/Date - LENOVO DKKT20AUS, 3/16/2011The only BIOS update the Lenovo Support center has is for the K330 is for Win 7, and I'm not rolling back my OS just to do that.  Is there any source for a more current update to the BIOS?  Also, I read that there was a recall on the K330 motherboards.  CPU-Z reports the MB model is "To be filled by O.E.M." msinfo32 reports: "System SKU To be filled by O.E.M.".   Anyone have any info on what kind of MB they used for the replacements?

A:K330 BIOS Update Needed - Running Windows 10

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

In viewing the downloads for the K330 you already have a newer BIOS version installed than what is available in the Lenovo Download Library.  The version Lenovo has available is DKJY15AUS from 12-22-2010.  Unfortunately there is nothing newer that is available for download.

In the event there HAD been a newer version, Lenovo offers two formats for your model.  There is a bootable CD version so there is no need to upgrade the BIOS from with-in the operating system so Windows 10 isn't a factor.

Personally, any BIOS versions that Lenovo had or has available pre-date the creation of Windows 10 so there really isn't nothing in any of the BIOS updates to offer the latest Windows operating system.  Since every BIOS upgrade has a very slight risk of failing, I would just stick to the current version if it is working without any problems and supports the hardware.

As far as a recall, I haven't heard of any and you are the first to mention it.  You might want to recheck with your source.  If there had a recall years ago before my time, I would assume the dead line for any free replacement has passed.

Hello forum,

I recently upgraded my HP a6019h desktop from Vista 32bit to Windows 7 32bit. I've since had issues with both stuttering in my sound and a noticeable lag in my mouse movements. I read through some other forums and found that a possible reason is because my mobo's (ECS 945GCT-HM) bios is not up-to-date. I went to HP's website and found the bios update but I believe it will only run if it's in Vista. I tried installing it several times and it states that my computer does not meet the minimum requirements error 9998. I have looked everywhere for a compatible update and have not found one. If anyone can tell me how to install this update, knows of where to find a Windows 7 compatible update, or even maybe knows how to resolve my stuttering sound and lagging mouse issue please let me know. Thanks.

P.S. - I have the latest Realtek drivers and DirectX drivers.

The BIOS update failed and left the computer with no working BIOS. F2 is dead. It will not boot.
I am pretty sure that there is a backup or primitive BIOS still in there, as when I start the machine with no battery and just AC power using the End key it continuously tries to read data from a 2GB flash drive. I assume that it would like to reload the BIOS from a file.

I know how to get the ROM contents from the above file using the /writeromfile parameter.

The big question is, what kind of file does the 3500 want to read, and what is the file name that it is looking for? Does the flash drive need to be bootable? Is this an AMI or Phoenix BIOS?

Can someone please help?

Thanks,

I updated the BIOS from 1.2.0 to 1.4.0 for my New Inspiron 13 7000 (7378) in Windows 10 (64bit) using the executable available from Dell's website for this particular model:
downloads.dell.com/.../inspiron-13-7378-2-in-1-laptop.html

This BIOS update (1.4.0) is quite recent and was released on January 6th, 2017. I followed all safety procedures (e.g. using AC power), and I did not see any error messages during the update. But when the computer finally rebooted the second time (it seemed to have first rebooted once to install the update), I got this error message:
Boot Guard verified FailedSystem will shutdownPress any key
The system wasn't even able to load the BIOS, indicating a critical error happened during the BIOS update. After spending some time searching for a solution to my bricked system (and panicking), I was able to recover the BIOS using this procedure on Dell's website for Convertible / Detachable with the external USB key method:
www.dell.com/.../en

Now, everything works fine using the BIOS version 1.4.0. Not sure what went wrong with updating the BIOS from Windows 10.

For instance. I can download and install Toribash, a small game, but the next time i run it it crashes. All of my games do the same thing. I can reinstall them and they work but if i try and play them after exiting they crash. And some of my system cleaning programs do the same. I have run hijack this and theres nothing out of the ordinary in there. Infact theres a lot less then normal (dot dot dot). I have run Malwarebyte's AntiMalware and it list off at least 4 files that it says are infected with "Backdoor.ProRat". It will not remove them without a restart. Thats fine and dandy but when i restart explorer.exe has a problem and wont load the desktop. I can fix that by killing explorer.exe in the taskmanager but malwarebyte's wont restart to clean the infection which its suposed to do before windows fully initializes. I went as far as downloading the trojan program itself and messing around with it (without clicking the server of course, im not dumb =p) and found that it has infectio... Read more

Hello.Backdoors are nasty and saying that it affects explorer.exe is another sign that it's a very nasty infection to deal with or have on your machine.Backdoor ThreatIMPORTANT NOTE: Unfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.With Regards,Extremeboy

Hello there....I'm having an issue with a remote site connecting to the local network.
Here is what I have....
1 Active Directory Server (Locally Located)
1 SQL Server (Locally Located)
1 Terminal Server (Locally Located)
1 Cache Controller (Remotely Located)
1 FTP Server (Locally Located)

All running Server 2003.
All workstations are running XP Pro SP3.

We have an office here locally and another in New Jersey.
We are connected to each other by a VPN Tunnel.
The PC in that office had a significant HD failure requireing a replacement. But I was unable to recover any settings or data from the old disk.
The PC has been shipped back and setup on the network. The computer connects to the network and can access all network resources. So the tunnel is working fine.
Here is where my problem lies. The manufacturing software we currently run, connects from the SQL server. All the executables are located on that server and the ini files are linked to the SQL database here locally. So when you try and connect to the manufacturing program, it takes several minutes to load the program...Which it hadn't done in the past.
So I made a copy of the executables to the local PC, the program starts up quickly, but takes a significant amount of time to connect to the database. Now this hadn't been an issue in the past, and I'm trying to think how it might have been configured before the failure.

Sorry this is so long...hopefully it's pleny of info...if not...just a... Read more

Ok here's the challenge: I am a cellular dealer and I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that will produce the lowest monthly total bill for the customer by suggesting a rate plan combination. There are only 3 rate plans that need to be considered.
Heres the scenario: A customer, lets say 'Acme Trucking', will provide me with their current bill. They have 22 phones active on their account. I would like to input, the total number of phones, the peak minutes needed, and the DC Minutes needed. Once the data is imputed I would like to see the most economical way to set up the account. These rate plans pool peak minutes together and these plans pool DC minutes so the total accumulated minutes need to cover the imputed amount.

RATE PLAN 1: $49.99 - 500 Peak Minutes - 250 DC Minutes
RATE PLAN 2: $39.99 - 300 Peak Minutes - 250 DC Minutes
RATE PLAN 3: $20.00 - 0 Peak Minutes - 100 DC Minutes

I hope this is clear enough, I hope this makes sense?

Anyone who can accomplish this please reply or message me with questions.

A:Challenge: Advanced Excel Help Needed - Can this be done?

Yes.

When you get the info from the prospective client, will you already have total peak and DC? Or will you be needing a location in the workbook to sum the minutes?

Is it okay for the workbook to contain a couple macros? Don't worry, on your side, they'll just be buttons to push.

Hi, i've got a question about the premium version of Advanced System Care. I've been using the free version for a little while now, after a previous recommendation, and im very satisfied with the program thus far. That being said, i've been offered by the company a slight discount on the upgrade to the premium version for $20, and im very curious to know if it would be worth the money.

I've been sold on programs to improve PC performance before, only to be disappointed, so here's my main question for anyone currently using or having recently used this premium version: Were there any significant increases in PC performance after upgrading or much better cleaning processes?

Any additional insight would be much appreciated, and thank you in advance for all the help!

Hi,
I stay away from reg cleaners etc but saw this free version suggested at TechSupportAlert. I used it rarely, saw no change in performance. The 'pro' version was offered free on GiveAwayOfTheDay so I installed it ... no difference in performance.
Running Vista Basic on new Dell laptop.

Just my experience though.

Ok, I know why I am having a problem, but I don't know how to prevent it. I have a dual boot system with Vista32 and Vista 64. Both OS are on seperate partitions. I run Outlook 2007 on both OS installs and I only use pop3 mail. I have both installs of Outlook pointed to the same .pst file on a completely seperate drive. Everything works fine except I am getting duplicate emails because one Outlook doesn't know that the email has already been downloaded.

So, I am sharing the pst file, and I'd also like to share whatever file it is that tells Outlook which emails were already downloaded. Does this make sense? I am confusing myself just typing it.

I though about having Outlook remove the files from the pop server once downloaded, but I need them to be there for remote purposes.

Any thoughts? Hopefully somebody can relate.

Hi
I have two excel files. One is inventory and other is ip plan.

The inventory document has a alot of data. Of them One column is of computer name and second is ip.

The ip plan has one column consisting of ip and next to it the user name and some other information.

Now I want the ip plan document to also have a column for computer name.
For this i will have to look at the ip column in ip plan file for first ip. Then search the inventory file for that ip. Once that ip is found in inventory file there is a machine name next to it. I will have to copy it and paste it next to ip plane file.
How can i do it. Any clue? I have not used excel so deeply.

Can you post both files, or are they confidential? Only few sample rows needed.... may be fake as well. Are you using excel2007?

Are both lists ordered by IP (or are you willing to order by IP)?

Hi everyone, After looking through countless issues, I have hit a brick wall with this notebook. A friend gave me two of these notebooks about two years ago and my father stripped the one to get the other working. The stripped one then sat until yesterday without being powered on or anything like that. Me, deciding I need a laptop, try and get this thing running. Now I am a tech savvy person and I can strip and repair things in the dark and I thought this was going to be a simple procedure but man was I wrong. What I have tried:Starting the notebook with and without the battery.Tried the working battery from the other notebook.Completely stripped and checked all connections.Replaced CMOS battery.Removed faulty keyboard and tried starting it again.Removed HDD, WWAN and WLAN and again tried to start the notebook.Removed all RAM Modules as well as put it back in either socket.8-Step Procedure (Found here)  to clear Caps.Plugged AC into different socket.None of the above worked The Issue:Right now, after doing everything I could, I am sitting with a notebook that does not turn on in any way. Once plugged into AC (With or without battery), the Power LED blinks white and orange (Once) and then the Power Button begins to blink until it turns off and the Power LED does it's thing again.  I know that the board is obviously getting power because the Power LED is lighting up along with the Power Button LED. Another key thing is when the backplate had b... Read more

Hello,
I have just 2 days ago built a second box of old parts and decided to give W8 a try. It runs remarkably faster IMHO than the Ubuntu 64 bit, I was using previously. Having no second drive I can not backup the system and have had to reload numerous times for undetermined reasons and general mess-ups. On my main box in msconfig > Boot Tab > Advanced tools there is a box (actually many), I don't understand. It is the PCI lock checkbox, which is checked on my W7 machine. It is not in this W8 machine and I would like to know if I should check it and possibly a elementary explanation of it's function. I am trying to learn... Thanks for any assistance!

A:Boot tab > Advanced options - PCI Lock - Help sorely needed!

Like all other options in msconfig, this too should be unchecked. Its purpose is to prevent Windows from dynamically allocating resources (I/O ranges, IRQs, etc) to devices connected to the PCI bus (note that devices don't actually need to be plugged into the PCI slots, many are devices that are present as part of the built-in hardware on the motherboard). In other words, if this option is checked then resources that are set by the BIOS are maintained. Note that devices, such as serial/parallel ports, may be enabled or disabled in the BIOS. Such devices, if disabled, have no resources allocated to them regardless of the PCI lock checkbox.

I built my pc in Jan. to play Everquest2 and other high graphics games, but when I get on the game, it freezes, and there is a high pitch noise in my speakers.

Mobo P4S800D-X

2G RAM
Chaintech Geforce 6600 GT 128m
soundblaster audigy 2
Rosewill 550W PSU
lite-on dvd player
dvd-r
80G western Digital SATA HD
3 case fans

I have tried a number of things to fix it, I have ran memtest86, removed sound card to see if that was the problem, unplugged numerous things to see if it was a power issue (I had bought the 550W to upgrade a 450W psu thinking that was the issue, I was sadly wrong), heat isnt an issue, my cpu runs at 41C on average, Mobo runs at 30C on avg. I have updated my bios, my vid card drivers, soundcard drivers, swapped the ram sticks with each other, and one thing I did happen to notice was that my old vid card (geforce4 ti4200) worked on the games that I play where my 6600gt didnt.
I have tried running 3Dmark, but after it loads up nothing else comes to the screen, just a black screen. Are there any older drivers that would work better than the new ones? Any ideas, cuz I am fresh out and feel like punting my pc onto the front lawn...
