Q: Solved: Explorer crushes, Internet Explorer popups and error messages

Hello everyone and thank you for participating in this wonderful site.

My computer is a Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz, Running Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The problem I'm writing about has been there for about a year. All in all it's the same prolem ever since, but every once in a while some detail changes, like a new error message.
Every about 5-15 minutes the Start Menu Taskbar and the desktop icons disappear (Explorer crushes). Most of the times they reappear shortly after, but sometimes they don't, and then I use task manager to run explorer and then they reappear. Yet, sometimes the computer stucks altogether, and I have to restart. In addition to that, many popups open when I surfe the web using Internet Explorer. The popup changes every few days, but in between it's always the same one.
Another point is that while the crushing of explorer can occur anytime, it most often occurs while I open or close Internet Explorer windows.

Sometimes I get an error message, and as I said, they change from time to time. But still, here are 2:

rundll32.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x74725956" referenced memory at "0x00a10004". The memory could not be "read".

Click on ok to terminate program.
Click on cancel to debug the program.
Another error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Buffer overrun detected!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

As I said, the problem first appeared about a year ago. Back than I had a firewall working but had no antivirus. Now I have an antivirus NOD32 installed, and when I run it it finds some problems it can't fix. And it also pops up sometimes about threats that are currently running, and I can choose to terminate or delete them, but it doesn't solve the problem either. Several anti malware programs got similar results.
I found a post with a similar problem that was solved. Its title is: "Solved: Taskbar and Desktop Icons Gone and Can't Get Rid of Virus' or Malware??? Not sure" by Sweetsherry. But the solution is very specific for that user, and I can't apply it on my computer.

On that post it seemed important to post the log of HijackThis, so I will also post mine:

Preferred Solution: Solved: Explorer crushes, Internet Explorer popups and error messages

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am using Internet Explorer 11 from Program Files folder which supposedly launches 64 bit applications. This Internet Explorer 11 settings from Tools Options of Custom Level and Advanced tabs Security features were if selected; Internet Explorer

This coupled with Microsoft Edge's unpredictable website loading with frequent Network's internet connection disconnecting to the brink of unusability; nothing; even Microsoft Edge Reset won't resolve these scenarios.
And now Microsoft Edge DEV; with all above said problems and beta version errings uses 1.5 GB of 4G ISP full speed memory to send computer information to Microsoft within half day of 12 hrs. day, rest of day goes with crawling speed of ISP setted 64 Kbps
in short without internet connection; this happening on all days Microsoft Edge DEV use; now a days I use only Internet Explorer 11 64 bit strictly with Default Level & Advance Security features Resetted instead of selecting app... Read more

So,what';s the error msg when IE cannot open ?
If you fear a virus,I would run your antispyware/antivirus apps and see if they turn up anything amiss.
Regarding your network adapter, let see this :

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. Adapter status should be “working properly and enabled”

Also from the failing pc,let's see:

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

PING <computer_IP_address> For addresses,follow instructions below….

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

Lately I've just started getting error message occasionally in IE (6.0.2800.1106...) with all the updates including SP1. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. I'm finding that the errors seem to only occur when I'm using Hotmail. Which I normally open using MSN Messenger (5.0.0543) and Messenger Plus 2.0. Unfortunately I'm my silliness I havent got a copt of the error messages so I can't explain what it actually says. But its pretty much the usual WinXP error stuff. Where it says "blah has caused a fault and IE must be closed. This has only happened 3 or 4 times, but its getting annoying when I've written a huge email and I lose the whole thing because the page has to be closed (there is no way to copy the text once the error message is open).
I remembered back to the olden days when I used Win98 and IE, I used to get errors everynow and then. I can remember the option for a Repair Install of IE. I've had a quick look and I can't seem to find that option anymore. I had a look in IE Help and under 'repair installation' and it describes uninstalling IE and then reinstalling it. Is this what I should do? Or could there be an easier solution to my problem? I'm guessing its probably to hard to tell without a copy of the error message. Next time it occurs I will post it here.
Thanks for your help.

I am getting Script error messages popping up when I try to use Internet Explorer 8 as a browser - not every time I open IE8, but on a fairly regular basis.

This is the script error message that appears;

First problem I have is that I'm never sure whether or not to continue running the script, or stop it all together?

Secondly, is there anything I can do to fix whatever problem there is to stop this pesky message from happening?

Thirdly, I haven't a clue what 'scripts' are about, and no understanding of their functions or dirty habits.

Fourthly, I fired up the URL and got rubbish, but it does [well to me anyway] seem to suggest a bug with the Google Toolbar I have as an add-on with IE8.

Cheers, The Sepoys

I am getting the following error message when I begin to logon to the internet with Internet Explorer 5.0.:

[This browser window (or Active X control in this page) is busy. Closing the window may cause some problems. Do you want to close anyway?]

I am not able to log on to the Internet at this point. I will then try to close out the error message and then this error message will pop-up:

[This problem has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.]

I have tried the following troubleshooting steps. I obtained these steps from the www.support.microsoft.com site entitled "How To Disable Active Content in Internet Explorer."

1. Confirgured Internet Explorer so that it does not run Active scripts automatically.
2.Configured Interent Explorer so that it does not automatically use items that show active content, such as vertical marquees or animations.
3. Verified that Internet Explorer's internal Java Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler is disabled.
4. Configured Internet Explorer so that it does not run Java programs automatically.

After performing these steps, I am still getting my error messages mentioned. I need help.... Thank you!

Hello new forum:) For the last 2 weeks, I've been working diligently with dear "mas-pogi" i.e. Mark in getting rid of nasty trojans which finally today, have gotten the all-clear:) However, still one minor problem remains and that is when I close out Internet Explorer and NOT using the "safe mode" for IE, I get error messages. Mark had advised me to: 1. Try the "safe" (without add-ons) route to IE which works just fine and no error messages. 2. In the Tools section, disable the HP viewer and try again. Unfortunately, with HP viewer disabled, I still get the error message. And by the way, my computer runs on Windows XP and is a Hewlett-Packard model - HP Media Center PC.Since the trojan problem is now resolved, Mark sent me to this forum hoping that someone here could help me resolve the problem with the error messages. Hi all. I'm new to the forums in which I joined because I'm in desparate need of help!

In the last 4 days or so I've been getting these annoying "Program has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" with a blue 'I' in a circle beside it messages popping up EVERY TIME I browse websites but when I click on the "don't send" button it doesn't close the webpage, plus to add to the irritation I'm getting an error message from Norton's Antivirus 2006 "Norton AntiVirus 2006 was unable to start the Instant Messenger scanner. It will be unable to scan Instant Messenger downloads for infections" popping up almost as frequently as the other error message. I wish I could show you guys the screen dumps I took of those error messages but don't have a server to upload them to.

Anyhow these errors are driving me insane and I desparately want this problem fixed so any help will be appreciated.

I also forgot to mention too that when I restart Windows I get this message:

"There is a file or folder on your computer called "C:\Program" which could cause certain applications to not function correctly. Renaming it to "C:\Program4" would solve this problem. Would you like to rename it now?"

I've not at all seen C:\Program but naturally I click on the "Rename" tab.

I can guess this may have a lead up to the errors I mentioned in the last post.

You're saying you weren't using Internet Explorer when you got an Internet Explorer error message?

Your TSG system info says you don't have an antivirus... Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware isn't an antivirus.
Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

Okay, now first ill go ahead and say that the problem im having right now ive tried to solve with dell and have called them too many times about issues with this computer. Now ive run into problems with Getting into User Accounts from the control panel and using system restore. Everytime i try to get into user accounts, it says User Accounts on the top of the box but the box itself is white. Furthermore, it then pops up with a bunch of dialogs saying an internet explorer script error has occured. Then, also recently, i was trying to get into system restore to create a restore point because i was about to make a slight modification to the registry..when i tried to get into it, it also popped up in jus a white box with nothing on it. This happens in both Normal Mode and Safe Mode. The only account that dosen't experience problems is my aunts account, whos the owner of the computer, an im not sure why that is. But anyway, do u have any idea of what i should try to do to fix this issue?(An my computer is a Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005 Service Pack 2 installed)

A:Problems with User Accounts(Getting internet explorer script error messages)etc

You can try dial-a-fix. Its magical for this kind of problems. Dial-a-fix will put many of your registry entries to Windows default state. You need admin rights for it.

Read carefully first, then download and run it ONLY if you understand clearly what would it do and if you can take all the previous actions suggested.

Good luck!

I read a poster that had a similar problem to the one that I am having. Here is his original post.

I have an annoyance that is starting to become a problem. I use Win XP professional on my laptop and use Firefox. I downloaded a "freeware" program about a week ago (I promise I will never do that again) that infected my system. I receive pop-ups in Internet Explorer windows even though I dont use explorer but instead use Firefox. I have pop-up block turned on and regularly use ZeroSpyware, Ad-adware SE plus and Xblock- they all run fine but the pop-ups persisit. My next thought was to uninstall IE but there isn't a listing for it in the uninstall program section. What's next?

In return there was a reply that read.

Go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/downloads.htm and download 'Hijack This!'.

First make a folder on your computer in my documents called Hijackthis and then Unzip it to that folder.
Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here
in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

Hi, and thanks in advance for any help.

I primarily use FireFox to browse. Last night I downloaded a nasty piece of work inadvertently trying to watch a video. Now I am getting popups

My symptoms seem identical to this gentleman's
The first occurence was the following in a popup, marked Spyware Alert. I clicked yes a few times thinking it was my McAffee virus checker.

Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine. This virus is distributed via the internet through e mail & Active-X objects. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers e mails from your local computer & re-distributes them itself. In worse cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer stealing passwords & personal data. This process should be removed from your system

Systems Affected Windows 2000,NT,ME.XP,Vista
Security Risk (0-5) 5
Recommendations. Click yes to remove it from your computer.

I cannot close it. The Alert is still sitting on the desktop.

I ran Windows Malicious software removal tool (Jan 2008) overnight. While it was running 26 instances of Internet Explorer opened. I had told IE to work offline, after I realized that it was malware, so none opened to the fake software sales.

the Malicious Software tool is about 75% complete after about 9 hours run-time on a full scan. It is reporting 6 infections at the moment. It was running along with firefox while I ran HijackThis (log attached)

i used spybot but have mostly been using adware constantly. ad-aware has found various things but still hasnt been able to find whatever this virus is. i just ran a full adaware this morning, it found some malicious objects, removed them, asked me to restart, i did, but then once i clicked on firefox, popups galore, everything slow to run, and cant pull up all the websites i normally do. so ad-aware is not working on this issue

Dear Tech guys,
I badly need your support. Day before yesterday (01-Aug-06) night I upgraded the yahoo toolbar and used their norton anti spy to scan. Then I shut down the system and started to work the next day. Every thing is perfectly ok except for one thing. In Windows Explorer, on any folder or drive if I double click or open I get a crash. If I do explore then there is no problem.

Below is the dialog that comes whenever we double click or open (for eg: on C:\ or any folder in the left side pane of the windows explorer. If I just keep expanding the + of the tree no problem, only on clicking the item to open the following error occurs.)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I am running on Windows XP SP 2. I dont have google toolbar. I have yahoo tool bar installed. I have tried uninstalling it and installing it again and other combinations as well.

I have also tried sfc /scannow as well. It did not work.

It doesnt look like any adware or spyware (yahoo's norton spyware had done a complete run and no problems in the system as reported by them).

What should I do now to get back to normal operation of windows explorer.

Thanks and Regards,
Naga Kumar S

I would un-install the Yahoo Toolbar and then put Google Toolbar in, Then I would try to download .NET framework 2.0

and install it. If it tells you that you already have it re-install it anyway.
