File Open or Choose File dialog hangs application after selection made

Q: File Open or Choose File dialog hangs application after selection made

Hi.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz
8 GB RAM

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Thanks,
Vinnie

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Figured this one out... It turns out a network attached drive was not on for some reason and I had a drive letter mapped to it. Once I turned the drive back on, the hanging symptom went away!

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

I have been using Outpost Firewall Pro v2.1.303.4009 for a while now, but when I try to use an up-to-date firewall (outppost or sygate) I always have the same problems.

When I try to load or save anything (after installing the newer versions) using any program (even basic ones like notepad) I can't access the selection bar at the top of the file selection dialog. The menu is there but when I click on the button the load/save box freezes.

I know it's Outpost because when I shut it down the problem stays but when I uninstall it the problem goes, I use 2.1 and everything works fine.

I'm not very cluey with the Outpost settings so I don't know if it's a simple setting I have turn of.

I don't know it's a conflict or not, but I have noticed it seems to start when I have both new firewalls and Alcohol installed

Anyway, anyhelp would be greatfully appreciated as I gather that I should upgrade for computer security reasons lol

I have a mapped network drive that points to a local folder on my computer (z:\). I can open that drive from windows explorer. I can open from the web when I need to save something ("save picture as"). However, when I need to upload something and select that drive, it tells me it can't connect.

Any ideas?

Here's some weird behavior... when I use an "open file" dialog box, and go to select a file, after a half-second or so, the cursor jumps back to the drop-down list at the top. After that, it's fine. Very annoying.

It's not the mouse or keyboard hardware. Why? Because it also happens when I VPN into the machine from a remote site.

OS is WinXP Pro with SP2.

Thanks for your responses.

Recently, on my computer running Win2K, ALL my apps now display files in random (or possibly date) order, not alphabetical order in the Open dialog box! Could something have gotten corrupted? A clobbered DLL? A registry error? How can this problem be fixed? Clearly, an alphabetical display is the most useful for opening a file.

In the past when I encountered this problem under Win98, I was given the following fix:

- Right-click the Start button, click Explore , and then click drive C:.

- On the View menu, click Details .

- Click the Name column to sort items by name, then click View > Folder Options > View > Like Current Folder > OK

- Now press and hold down the CTRL key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the File Menu.

- Release the CTRL key.

- Restart the computer.

This fixed the problem in Win98 but his method DOES NOT WORK under Win2k. I tried it (finding FOLDER OPTIONS under Tools) to no avail.

Does anyone have another suggestion?

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. Hello,

Everytime I restart my laptop, I get this pop up "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" for a file that has no extension, or at least the extension of the file isn't shown. I tried opening the file with notepad and get some sort of list with the title "Interface List".

I checked my startup folder and it was empty.
This problem only started a few days ago, and I can't recall doing anything different other than installing Symantec Endpoint Protection and running a full scan.

Any suggestions? I can upload print screens if necessary.

It would also be a good idea to run some other virus scans, at the link below download and install the free version of Malwarebytes, when installed run a full scan of the complete PC, if it finds something run additional scans until it comes clean.

Hi, I'm a newbie to this site and am hoping someone out there, who is a lot better with computers than me, will be able to help. I am having a very similar problem to the one discussed here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/913209-solved-choose-program-you-want.html

Norton removed a virus and now I seem to be having problems opening files etc.

I having a very similar problem right down to the scroll function on the touchpad not working. When I try to open programs from my desktop or from the start menu I get the following message:

Choose the program you want to use to open this file.

When I try to open Microsoft Office programs I get the following:

C:/program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\ Office12\EXCEL.EXE

Application not found.

OR

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel

I can open both Internet Explorer and Windows Live Mail, but they seem to be the only 2 at present.

I have tried your suggested fix - downloading the .exe fix and merging it with the registry. I get the following message:

The keys and values contained in C:\Users\Claire\Desktop\exefix_cu.reg have been successfully added to the registry.

But no change to my problems.

Hope I have given you enough info. I'm not that great at computer jargon so please be patient with me and let me know if you need any more info. Any suggestions and help gratefully received

Thanks
Claire

Hi,

Last night when I double clicked on my C Drive it asked me to "Choose a program to open with the following file: C:\"! First time seen this here. It was the same for the D Drive as well. I tried googling for this problem and found that few people were also complaining about it, and blaming it on viruses/corrupt system.

Anyway, I scanned with my Anti-Virus, Avast Home Edition on boot and found few viruses and deleted:

C:\Windows\System32\SocksA.exe infected by Win 32:VB-BBA [Trj]
C:\Windows\System32\abgsvc.exe with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}
C:\Windows\System32\wykmjhic.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}
C:\Windows\System32\akgfsdvv.dll

C:\Program file\VideoAddon\isfmm.exe with Win32:Zlob-AIK [Trj]
C:\Program file\VideoAddon\ctmdl.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

C:\System Volume Information...

I also scanned with Bit Defender and Kaspersky Online Scanners. Kaspersky Online said 'Object is locked... skipped'. I don't know what that means but I uninstalled Avast and downloaded and installed Kaspersky trial version. I Scanned with it and it detected and deleted:

Having had an IRC Bot infection, Backdoor.Win32.Rbot,here is something you must consider. Possibly the safest thing you can do is a full format and reinstall of the OS.Win32.Rbot is an IRC controlled backdoor (or "bot") that can be used to gain unauthorized access to a victim's machine. It can also exhibit worm-like functionality by exploiting weak passwords on administrative shares and by exploiting many different software vulnerabilities, as well as backdoors created by other malware. There are many variants of Rbot, and more are discovered regularly. Rbot is highly configurable, and is being very actively developed, however the core functionality is quite consistent between variants.Rbot's main function is to act as an IRC controlled backdoor. It attempts to connect to a predefined IRC server and join a specific channel so that the victim's computer can be controlled. The IRC server, port number, channel and password differ with each variant.Rbot also listens on TCP port 113 to provide ident services, which are required by some IRC servers.Once the victim's computer is under control, the overseer is able to instruct Win32.Rbot to attempt to perform malicious operations such as spreading via administrative shares with weak passwords or the DCOM RPC exploit. The backdoor can also be instructed to:download and execute files from the Internet retrieve system information such as Operating System details retrieve CD keys for certain computer games, if p... This is happening on Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.I get the error "Choose the program you want to open this file" when trying to open Firefox. It happens for every other EXE (like calc) as well, but only in Normal Mode. When I'm in Safe Mode, everything works fine. It's weird because I cancel the error and it actually pulls up an Untitled webpage in Firefox and lets me browse. Many sites have mentioned an EXE reg fix which I have merged with my registry in Safe Mode and it has no affect on being able to open EXEs in Normal Mode.Other steps I have taken include a full Spybot S&D scan/removal, a thorough HijackThis scan/removal, GMER scan/removal, ComboFix scan/removal, MalwareBytes Antimalware scan/removal, and ESET's free online virus scanner.I have performed all these diagnostic steps in Safe Mode with Networking.I even went into Set Program Access & Defaults to ensure that Firefox was selected as my default browser.Any other ideas to get rid of this error besides the steps I took above?

I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

A:Choose the program you want to use to open this file

what was the "virus scanner" you used as you have to be careful about ones that pop up whilst on the internet, as the results are fake and will actually install more viruses on when you click download this to remove the viruses, but with your issue you most likely need to re-install windows or get a good quality virus scanner like norton or kaspersky to thoroughly search your computer to remove all the viruses and try to recover the data you may have lost

hope this helps

Hi and welcome!

Try this: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the desktop. Right click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note: You need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Restart your computer.

If the fix opens as a text file then right click it and select Open With > Choose Program Then, select Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

After the file downloaded, it asks "What program would you like to use to open this file?" So far, I have not found anything that will allow me so see the file.

I am assuming that it is a text type file, and I tried wordpad and notepad. What I end up seeing is a whole lot of little symbols with a few words here and there. How do I know what program to "choose" to open this kind of thing?
This has happened to me before with some attachments to emails I received, but I gave up on them!

Since I cleaned the malware from my system, whenever I try to upload or download a file to (or from) my website, the "File Open" dialog is set to "list" display mode by default and I have to change it every time. Also, previously all the names would be sorted alphabetically but now I have to click on the "name" tab each time.
How can I chnge these defaults back?

I got a virus asking me to buy some kind of virus software. Of course I did not buy it. I ran norton antivirus and malware bytes right away. Norton removed a virus and malware did not find anything. After that when I went to click on Internet Explorer and microsoft word it would ask me to pick a program to use to open this file.

I looked around on this site (tech support guy) and I found a post that said to do this......

"Go here File association fixes for Windows Vista and download the fix for EXE files.
Extract the enclosed .reg file to your desktop, then double click it to merge into the registry. "

I did that and all seems to be working fine now. My question is how do I know if the virus or spyware are totally gone off my computer.

Do I need to download a newer version of the malware bytes because mine is about 1 year old?

I had been using my Dell Inspiron 531 in Safe Mode with Networking for a while, after applying Roxio Easy Media Center 9. I didn't worry when my CA antivirus subscription ran out because I figured Safe Mode would give adequate protection. I ran a system restore recently. Then I installed Norton Internet Security 2009 right away, and ran full system scan several times, which found and fixed more than 200 security risks (oops!). Now I can run the machine outside of Safe Mode which is great, except for a new issue -- whenever I try to open virtually any .exe, I get blocked by the message:

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I suspect some malware messed with the registry during the restore. I tried to run system restore again, but that too gets blocked by the new problem.

In researching the problem, I found some related hits for XP, but none that seemed to be specifically for Vista.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I wonder if any of you fab tech people can help me please.

I have searched and searched many sites (including here of course) on and off over the past year for help with this annoying little issue and I finally succumbed to posting a request for help!

When I open a file from an application that uses the standard XP File Open dialog, the default view is "List" and is sorted by filename.

Like this:

I would like the default view to be "Detailed" and sorted by descending date.

Is this possible and if so, how can I do it?? I have tried changing the view and when I reopen the dialog it has reset to "View" again :(

I would be very grateful for any help, even if it's just to point me in the right direction :)

I use WinXP Pro SP2 with all latest updates.

Many thanks.

Okay im a noob when it comes to VBscript, but here is what i need:

i need a .vbs that can open a dialog box to select a file (or multiple files) and return the path and filename to "GetFilename".

This is what i have tried:
Code:

WScript.Echo BrowseFile( "C:\", "TempImage files (*.img)|*.img" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "", "Text files|*.txt" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "", "MS Office documents|*.doc;*.xls;*.pps" )
' WScript.Echo "Selected file: " & GetFileName( "C:\WINDOWS", "Bitmaps|*.bmp" )

Function BrowseFile( myDir, myFilter )
' This function opens a File Open Dialog and returns the
' fully qualified path of the selected file as a string.
'
' Arguments:
' myDir is the initial directory; if no directory is
' specified "My Documents" is used;
' NOTE: this default requires the WScript.Shell
' object, and works only in WSH, not in HTAs!
' myFilter is the file type filter; format "File type description|*.ext"
' ALL arguments MUST get A value (use "" for defaults), OR otherwise you must
' use "On Error Resume Next" to prevent error messages.
'
' Dependencies:
' Requires NUSRMGRLib (nusrmgr.cpl), available in Windows XP and later.
' To use the default "My Documents" WScript.Shell is used, which isn't
' available in HTAs.

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

I often attach files to outlook which are hosted on network drives. I typically like to add a UNC instead of the old-fashioned drive letter.

When I go to the attach or insert file dialog, I want to quickly navigate to one of several preferred server directories.

Is there any way I can add one of these directories to the left side of the dialog so that I can click on it directly? (I tried dragging the folder icon but that doesn't work.)

I've googled and not found any solution so far. (This is somewhat trivial in both Dolphin and Nautilus.)

Any button that has an underlined letter operates when you depress the Alt key while hitting that letter. In any program that works in Windows. There may be a few exclusions, but I'm not aware of them.

I recently bought a small 11" laptop to use remotely when I'm out of pocket. It doesn't have a hard drive, only 32gb of flash memory. That's ok, but I really want to minimize what I transfer to the memory. But hey, it's 2016 and we have the cloud, right? So on my main laptop I have the Google Drive app installed, and it automatically places a copy of everything in my local Google Drive file on the Google cloud drive. For my tiny no-HD laptop, I'd rather access files on the cloud and not create another copy of all the files on this laptop. I noticed in apps when I File-Open, the dialog has local files, a tab for Network files, and even a tab for OneDrive. But no generic cloud files or a specific Google Drive entry.

Is it possible to add Google Drive to that dialog, or in some other easy way access cloud files that are NOT on OneDrive. I can't really install Google Drive desktop since it will create copies of all the files and I don't have room for that.

How do I disable the preview pane in a file open dialog (it seems to be the standard W7 open dialog with enabled preview)?

In Windows Explorer there are a button to turn it on/off, but not in a open dialog.
There doesn't seem to be any option to turn it off anywhere and Alt+P apparently doesn't.

I know it is possible as I found it by chance several months ago, but I've managed to to forget how.

I can't understand how they would add a preview pane without an obvious way to get rid of it (i.e same button as in explorer).

I've tried searching the forums, but I've only managed to find threads related to Windows Explorer, not the open dialog, and they seem to be different in behavior.

A:Disable preview in file open dialog.. how??

When you refer to the open dialog are you talking about when you attempt to open a file that has no default program? If so, you can just set a default program to use, and clicking the open button or double clicking it will open the file in that program. You can still open the file in an alternative program by using the drop-down menu of the open button or using open with...

If you're talking about the open dialog from within a program such as Paint, you can close the preview pane via a button on the top right of the open dialog.

Hi

In VBA for word 07/10 I understand the wdDialogFileOpen and the use of the functions show and display. How do I get the open file dialog to set the file extention filter for image files only, get the user to select one or multiple image files, then save these as in an array variable to display later in the document.

I know there is alot I am asking but any help even it is partially answering my question would be great.

Hi All,
Since new in Windows 7, whenever I have an Open File dialog box and I start typing into the filename field, it displays all possible filenames that match what I've typed so far.
Now this function is gone, I must have unknowingly changed some setting (or maybe updates did). How do I get it back?

Note: I'm not talking about "recent files" with the arrow button to drop them down; but matching filenames that drop down automatically.
For instance, in an Open File dialog box (any program - not just MS) if say I start typing P files drop down:
PA1
PA2
PA3
PB1
PB2
PB3
etc.
If I continue typing B then only the PB files are left, drop down list is now only
PB1
PB2
PB3

Thanks in anticipation,
Rob

hello all, newbie here being driven to distraction by a fault that has manifested itself with the Open/save/Common dialog box.

In all programs I use - Chrome/IE11 and OpenOffice. when I wish to open or save a file the dialog box is does the following:

opens BUT without "save as file type" OR without the Explorer Tree. It seems to open a random storage file within C. The lack of either the file tree or the file type/location field makes it impossible to speficy where to save the file to. In 'open' it makes it impossible to find the file for emailing and because it opens random folders saving the file into that file is not an option.

any ideas? As a business and work tool without this function working the laptop is essentially useless.

All registry files have been cleaned and the laptop is virus free.

I read somewhere that 32bit programmes can sometimes cause issues with the common dialog boxes when run in 64bit environments but couldn't glean any more on this. Certainly seems to be a Windows issue as it is across programmes

Hello can you post the section showing the found infections? Run MBAM... Note when you save the file save it as .com not .exe .. if you still have trouble see the Chameleon option below. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue. If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A: 4. Issues.Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.Click on the Scan button. When the scan is complete, click OK, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sur... I have Windows XP, the computer is a HP.
So I usually use the USB everyday but all of a sudden it won't open when I double click it in My Computer. The only way to open it is to Right Click, and select Open As Portable Media Device.
After I open it that way, I select my Drive, and then I find my files. But, I can't open my files. If I double click it, it just opens up the properties of the file. If I right click, it only gives me the option to Copy, Delete, Rename, and Properties.

How do I fix this problem?

Hello everyone. This site seems to be very helpful so hopefully you can help me fix a problem on my laptop.

Whenever I try to open a program I'm given the "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" message. I read somewhere that I can fix this issue through running cmd but when I try that I'm told the application (C:\\Windows\system32\cmd.exe) is not found.

Any idea on what I can do? Thanks.

Hi Mmage

The issues your having can be resolved with the following.
This commonly happens after a fraudulent security tool is removed from a computer.
You will have to apply the following to the Registry, just download the file depending on your operating system (The Vista one will work on Windows 7) and then double click it to merge it to the registry, this should resolve the issue.
