Second RAM slot not working (Latitude E6400)

Q: Second RAM slot not working (Latitude E6400)

Hello, I have this 4-year old laptop. I bought a Kingston 2GB DDR2 800mhz CL6 PC2-6400 module to install into the second slot (the first one has the stock 2GB RAM module). BIOS didn't recognize it, so I tried to plug the original RAM module from the first slot (A) into the second (B) and the laptop didn't even power on. Then I tried to install the Kingston into the first slot (A) and the laptop did power on and run OK. So it is clear that the second RAM slot is not working properly.
Does it mean that I need to replace the motherboard in order to fix it? Is there any other way this could be fixed (maybe the slot isn't bad, it just needs some setup, maybe cleaning, I don't know)?
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Second RAM slot not working (Latitude E6400)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If neither module works in that slot, it's a bad memory socket - the mainboard may be repairable but the soldering required will put the price near or over what a replacement board will cost.

My Dell Latitude E6400 has windows 7 installed everything works fine but I cannot get my integrated camera to work. I've tried installing the drivers on the dell website with no luck. If I check under the device manager it says unknown device. I tried updating the driver from the device manager also but I get nothing. Can anyone help?

Flash your system with bios A27, as well as update your chipset. You didn't say if your OS was 32- or 64-bit.

Hi hassanahmed,Unfortunately, none of the Latitude E6400's support Windows 8. Installing this OS may have caused your issues. From a Dell support perspective, we would advise you revert back to the original OS for optimum performance.Thank you,Amy

I'm looking into buying an affordable small travel notebook/laptop. My budget is fairly low, only consisting of a few hundred Dollars.
I have found this specification list from a local used store:
I haven't found any new condition sellers so far. Also, a few questions I had were:
- Is this notebook capable of running Windows 10?
- As I'm a designer, can this notebook run Photoshop cloud edition?
- Is shipping notebooks overseas possible and safe?
it is really hard for me to determine what's wise or not. Because I'm inexperienced in the hardware field.

A:DELL Latitude E6400

This is a nice reliable computer. Unfortunately, there are no Windows 10 drivers available for download. That does not mean it may not run it. It is that Dell did not verify this computer to run Windows 10 and did not create any drivers.
Looking at the system requirements to run Photoshop Cloud software; the computer meets the requirements.
As far as shipping notebooks overseas it should be fine as long as it is packaged well toh avoid being damaged.
Dell has some reasonable priced laptops that may meet your budget located on our Dell Outlet website below., Even with Windows 10.

This is the only laptop I could get with a modem for dialup, Windows 7 installed ok, registered ok. It came with disk. It is refurbished but looks like it was never used.
I am used to XP so I have a lot of questions, entered Internet connections but it only connects and does not go anywhere.
Do I need Java? Comodo says, it cannot be installed, Malwarebytes cannot update. Firefox installed ok without any add-ons.
Can I install WOT on W7 ?
Can I install Malware Search?
Can I install NoSquint? Dr.Web?

I have to get to the point where I can go onto the web to get Superantyspyware and update Malwarebytes (had it from a USB, older version).
I managed to fix my old laptop here to be able to ask questions but I need the newer one, this 10+ year old gets too hot fast.
Any help is very much appreciated.

The only way to upgrade the video is to replace the entire system board.  There is no video card in any of these systems - the chip is part of the mainboard, whether Intel or nVidia.
This will void any warranty you have on the system.  The part you'd need is this one

Audio is only working through headphones not Laptop speakers

This seems to have happened after an update in the last couple of days
Any help much appreciated!

A:Latitude E6400 Audio problem

If you have the IDT audio driver installed for your model, you can test by switching between it and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Codec".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If the speakers do not work with either driver then it is not a driver issue but could be failed hardware.
If the speakers work with only one of the drivers, then the other driver is at fault.
If you need more help please say which operating system is on the laptop.

I'm planning on getting a new dell latitude E6400 for college next year and in the customizable options for RAM one can choose 4.0GB DDR3-1333MHzSDRAM, 2 DIMMS or 4.0GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS for the same price. I assumed the RAM with 1333MHz would be faster, but the Dell support tech support people (who did not really seem to know what they were talking about) kept saying they couldn't find any information about the latitude E6400 having a 4.0GB DDR3-1333MHz RAM. So, which RAM do you guys think I should choose?

P.S. Should I go for 64 bit OS or 32 bit? And what exactly would be the difference?

Thanks so much!

A:RAM dilemma with Dell Latitude E6400

Without know the CPU, best guess is it doesn't matter.

Looking here: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-latitude-e6400-laptop/4505-3121_7-33200149.html
the laptop has a P8700 CPU, which according to Intel has a 1066 BUS (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SLGFE)
Most likely the board they are using only supports this bus, so buying the higher will just downclock to the 1066.

I'd go for the x64 OS.

I just replaced a standard keyboard with a brand new back-lit keyboard.  Everything appears fine except the Ctrl keys do not work on the new keyboard.  I have reset the new  keyboard 3 times with no change and the old keyboard works just fine when reinstalled. Is this a hardware failure on the new keyboard or a setting?

A:Latitude E6400 keyboard faults

Hi BIGZ1957,
Are the old and new keyboard of the same layout?
If the old keyboard works fine with ctrl and the new keyboard does not, it could be an issue with the new keyboard itself.
Another way to test it, remap the ctrl key to another key and some working key to the ctrl key and check if the keyboard registers it when pressed.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Dear Friends,

Hope all is well.

This notebook will NOT PLAY any DVD's. I'm not sure when the last time I tried to play a DVD!?

I ran a sfc /scannow and it came back clean, uninstalled DVD/CD-ROM driver, rebooted and made no difference.

Using the same DVD on two other machines both being HPs the DVD played fine. I also downloaded and installed K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, but I don't think it was the newest one Version 12.9.0 and there was no change. It seemed like once or maybe twice like right after installing the Codecs a window popped up and asked to play the DVD. The next time I placed the DVD back in to play it..it didn't recognize it..or asked to play it.

I'm fairly sure I have the Defaults set right for WMP and the related file types.

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Head to dell.com or dell.co.uk (depending on your region) and go to support, then enter your service tag, then select the drivers required listed for Windows XP.

Generally speaking you will want chipset, Wireless, LAN, sound, and video, as well as additional drivers for Dell keyboard shortcuts and such.

Disregard my post. I have resolved the issue.

It was tied to the version of Symmantec Endpoint Protection at my company. I upgraded (uninstalled old and did a clean install of the new version) my version of SEP and fixed the problem.

More context around my activities in troubleshooting the issue on my Dell Latitude E6400 Windows 7 64 bit machine:

I first thought it was a hardware or driver issue tied to the wireless driver, and tried the following two things:
1) Updated my wireless driver to the latest available from Dell (I was at least one release behind)
2) Swapped my hard drive into a different E6400.
Both failed, and the issue remained.

I tried to use the ?repair? function in the Windows ?F8? boot screen of available diagnostic options. Fail.

I tried to restore my machine to an earlier restore point several different times with the two available restore points. Fail.

Around this point I went home for the day (after a final attempt to do a system restore). When I got home (and assumed my machine was still useless) I fired up my machine in ?normal? mode (I had been using ?Safe Mode With Networking? during my troubleshooting), and everything worked. Puzzling. I assumed my last ?system restore? attempt had been successful in resolving the issue. I used my laptop last night without issue.

I got into work this morning, docked my machine, logged on, launched a couple of apps, then?.BSOD! DAMMIT!

I then figured that the issue was tied to something tha... Read more

Until recently the laptop worked fine, but now it experiences something that resembles thermal throttling.
Initially, everything is OK, but after 10-15 min of heavy use (and by heavy use I mean a 1080p youtube video), it starts to really chunk the responses. You would think is because is overheating, but the temps never gets really high.

[check attachment for higher resolution]
As you can see, the highest temp was presumably 77C, and the current one is 50C, while the On-Demand Clock Modulation is 50%, but it feels way worse. Once the ODCM kicks in it's very slow.
I'll give it a good clean inside and a new thermal compound this weekend, but I doubt that's the issue, it looks clean already.
Any thoughts on why is ODCM kicking in ?

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Dell Latitude E6400. When I'm not using it for a while the screen goes black (like into a sleeping mode) like all computers and laptops do. But if it stays black for a little while, and when I go to get back on it and move the mouse around or press the keys the screen won't turn back on but the computer is running because the light on the keyboard are lit up and I can hear the fan running. The only way I can get the screen back on is if I shut it down by pressing the power button on my keyboard and turning it back on.

Can anyone please tell me what to do or what is wrong with it. That would be much appreciated. Thank you

Processor: Core 2 Duo P8700
Storage: 160GB HDD
GPU: Nvidia Quadro NVS 160m
Just got this laptop through work refurbished. I don't play games really, except for Minecraft. So, I was shocked to see how pitful performance is on the lowest settings. When I first got the laptop and installed Minecraft, it was runnable. Getting about 30-60fps, sometimes dipping below 20fps. But now I'm getting 1-15fps at the LOWEST SETTINGS.
I recently applied fresh thermal paste, and the processor is running a lot cooler.
Is the GPU for this laptop really that bad? Even if I upgraded to a Core 2 Duo T9900 would the GPU be a bottleneck? I understand that these Core 2 Duos are like 6 years old, but they shouldn't be COMPLETE garbage.

I've heard talk that a Core 2 Quad would be compatible with this laptop. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I'd love to upgrade to a quad just for the sake of better performance. I've heard that overheating is an issue, but are there any fan upgrades for this laptop? How about the best darn thermal paste available? I'd like to put only so much money into this machine, but not TOO much if it isn't worth it. If it is, I'd like to max it out, or, get pretty darn close to it. 6GB of RAM, SSD, Core 2 Quad...

Thoughts/ideas? Was this a bad buy? After my associate discount and coupons I got the laptop for $119 at Staples. I love Dell because of the options for upgrading, but I don't want to be... Read more

A:Dell Latitude E6400 MAXIMUM SPECS, Beefing Up

If I had to guess I would say that the bottle neck is not the processor but the GPU.  I doubt that the Quadro NVS 160m would perform very well playing games and there is some discussions about this fond from the web. You can find more information about the performance of the NVS 160m here and here. The biggest culprit might not be so much the GPUs but the video drivers themselves, they are unfortunately just not optimized very well for game play.
I noticed a couple videos with games being run on the E6400 like this one here,  that you can compare with to see if you are getting similar performance.

I think that I might have received a virus when opening an attachment from my old boss. it would not let me get to certain sites. when I chick on the link for the site, it tries to connect and eventually stops. I have run ccleaner, spybot, superantispyware (but it wouldn't let me download new definitions), and tried to run malwarebytes but I get the popup saying "unable to contact license server. check your network settings or contact your system admin for help". I can then scan but it does not find anything.

I am not sure what I need to do or check next. any help would be greatly appreciated.

let me know if there anything else that you need

Thank you for writing to us!
For the system with the battery occasional pop we would suggest you to check the power management settings in control panel. Also check the battery health in BIOS. You can also check if the adapter port is loose.
For the system with the keys not working can you please let us know if the keys work intermittently or  they dont work complete.
Kindly private message the service tags and email address.

I recently imaged my Dell E6400 laptop with Win7Pro and the status indicated that it needed troubleshooting. I ran the troubleshooter and when it eventually completed there were 2 problems that could not be fixed:
- Base System Device does not have a driver
- Broadcom USH does not have a driver

I've googled these but nothing comes up that's specific to these devices. Anyone know what they are and where I can find the appropriate drivers?

Thanks in advance

I have a Latitude E6400 that I recently clean installed WIN7 ultimate on. Everything was working great and continues to work great undocked. When in the docking station (), however I tend do have problems. I thought initially it was just related to the NIC card as it seemed to only start misbehaving under a lot of network activity and disabling the NIC and running only on wireless seemed to fix it, but in ALL cases I have to do a cold boot. Simply restarting it would not help and when I finally would get logged back in after a simple restart, the CPU was already pegged. Today, however it seems that even with the NIC disabled that it also exhibits the behavior although today I was using an external USB drive connected to the docking station. i have since removed that as well to see if I can stabilize. I've downloaded and installed every latest driver/bios/firmware I could find. Nothing has worked...

What occurs is over time, and sometimes that's not long, my CPU quickly pegs at 100% and stays. There are no particular processes pegging it either. I can end process on many in my list with no change. Over the last week I've only been in the office a couple of days using the docking station and on each occasion I have problems at least 2 - 3 times within the day. The rest of the week I've been undocked and had no problems and I run this thing all day long.

I have no messages in any logs that I've found indicating any type of problem. Just extreme frustration. ... Read more

A:Dell Latitude E6400 Windows 7 docking problems?

Did you ever find a resolution to this problem? If you did, I hope it wasn't "rolling back to XP" since that is not really an option I would like to explore either. I noticed this problem for me started about 3 weeks ago and it only happens when I am docked as well. I have tried other docking stations, but that didn't resolve my problem either. Just wondering if you have been able to find a "fix".

I have two Latitude E6400 laptops that I am upgrading to Windows 8.1 64 bit.  Problem is I can not find
the drivers needed.  Dell does not list the 8.1 drivers for the E6400 on their support site and support
has been no help.  They would rather sell new then help keep older perfectly functioning system operating.
Anyone know where they can be found?
I am doing a clean install on a new SSD drive.  It has 4gb of RAM.
Thank you for any and all help.

I've had this laptop for about 3 or 4 years as a Christmas present; Probably should get around to getting a new one, but currently that's not gonna happen until the school year ends.
Around September the laptop stopped charging correctly until the I was forced to have the laptop plugged in at all times and if it came loose, the whole system would shut down. I've checked through various different sources before I actually just put the system down for good and get a new one. I've tried checking if it was the AC adapter itself, strangely it did the same on my current laptop and an old one. The charging symbol would just blink red but it was still powering the laptop, but not charging it. I tried checking if it was the drivers since recently I did a whole system restore with reinstalling windows 7, but no change.
Now I'm questioning if it's just the battery is full on dead along with the charger being burnt out. Could the problem be different than what I've found or should I get a new laptop altogether since buying both a new battery and AC adapter would be a waste when I can just get a new one with Windows 10.

My E6400 will not power on with the battery installed and will only start with AC power after I remove the battery, hold the power button for 15-20 seconds then insert the AC adapter.  I have tried installing a new battery and the same issue occurs and even went as far as unplugging the BIOS (?) battery.  Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi chaps,
Had a search but couldn't find anything on this except a few people having the same problem
Basically I ordered a test batch of these laptops in to evaluate them as a successor to the D630's we currently use. They've been fine so far but on my laptop (which is used the most frequently) - it takes a long while to boot and for the preboot authentication screen to appear.
The boot progress bar progresses quickly to the last 5% or so and then hangs there for about 2 minutes. Then the preboot authentication screen will appear but takes about the same amount of time to initialise.
This seemingly happened overnight without any significant hardware or software changes.
The boot is not the more thorough boot that usually happens after a poor shutdown or update.
I've tried checking the BIOS for any obvious settings but have found none, and upgrading to A11 BIOS didn't help.
I don't particularly want to rebuild the machine as I don't think this will help.
I haven't tried removing the security feature yet but will do so.
Diagnostics find no problems.
Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing this problem and if so, whether they have managed to resolve it. It doesn't sound like a major issue but will become one as we can't really roll these out across the company if this is a common problem.
Machines are the following spec:
E64002.4Ghz C2D Centrino 22GB RAMVista Business 32bit

I am facing issues on my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. Everyday it crashes with blue screen 4-5 times a day. Common symptoms are, when I move from wired network to wireless (wireless does not work and system hangs and eventually crashes), or when it is in a sleep mode. Sometimes, without switching to wireless also hangs and crashes. The blue screen says something like DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and code 9f etc. I updated the Ethernet and wireless drivers too, but it didn't help.

It has Windows 7
- x64
- OEM version of windows 7 Ultimate is installed from Dell
- Age of system (hardware) is ~2 years. I got it now from my office IT.
I am attaching the zip file containing perfmon html report and files from Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2.

Will appreciate if you can help, what is going on and what needs to be uninstalled or upgraded.
