Blocked Secure Links

Q: Blocked Secure Links

I am using Windows XP and recently installed Norton Antivirus and ever since the installation I am unable to access any secure page. I can't access my bank web site or any other secure web site which requires a sign-in or registration. Any ideas on what Norton changed or how I can correct the problem?
Thanks
This is the Actual Error Message and it never occurred until Norton Antivirus was installed:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Trying to download a program from a secure site (Discover Card). At the last just before it puts an icon on the task bar, the pointer turns to look like a little hard drive with a red circle and slash through it. I don't get the icon or program. Tried to turn off IE popup blocker and the same thing happened.

Any ideas?

For the past 8 weeks, at least 4 secure sites from which I send emails are not receiving them.
These include the bank, library (where I can request or secure books for later) my ISP (!) and a government agency. Two of these have my Hotmail address registered, two have Gmail.

I investigated this myself (a little), trying to send an email from MsEdge, that didn't work either so I'm assuming it's not the browser at fault.

The library IT dept sent the message below which, as suggested, I forwarded to my ISP. I then spent a fruitless hour with a very patients techie who had no idea how to solve the problem. He suggested I try the Hotmail Fix-IT site - I already had, going through all the stages to no avail. He suggested I ask Microsoft what the problem is - I'd guess that's about as probable as getting Gates to come and fix the problem himself. I did look at a couple of MS forums but there... Read more

Hi all

I'm experiencing a problem where certain sites are being blocked by something on my PC. This happens to the same sites in both IE6 and Firefox 2. I've tried disabling all windows firewall and PC-cillin software. I also ran through some suggestions which you can see in the thread in Web& Email (link below). A guy there suggested I try this forum as it appears to be a security issue.

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/572550-odd-content-filter-firewall-issue-2.html

For an example of the problem, I can get access to http://hub.ebay.co.uk/buy just fine. But I cannot access www.ebay.co.uk. Similarly I can't access sites like online banking, expedia, etc.

There's a hijackthis log below if that helps. I've also run Ewido across the system to wipe out spyware of which there were a few bits.

Cheers

A:can't get secure links

Unable to access secure sites are usually a "firewall gone bad" problem.

I see you have Mcafee.. I would either disable it (but this sometimes doesn't work) or uninstall it and try your secure sites.

let me know.

If that solves your problem, you can either go with a different firewall, turn on windows' firewall, or better yet, buy a router with firewall capabilities.

Hi all,
I was fiddling around with the security settings on IE a little while ago, and ever since then the program doesn't seem to work properly.

The problem is that some links will no longer open up.

Here are two examples;

i. Clicking on any of the green 'Download Now' links on the homepage of http://www.download.com

ii. Clicking on the 'Macromedia Shockwave Player' link on http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/

Both of the above come up with a 'The page cannot be displayed' page.
It happens with a lot of other similar links as well - eg. the sponsored links on the right of a Google search page etc.

I have gone through all the security settings on IE and set them back to default, but the problem persists.

I am running IE 6.0 on Windows 2000.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have been tearing my hair out for the past couple of months trying to fix a nasty problem with IE 6.0 where I am unable to load certain links that use javascript. I have consulted several technical support reps from many different sites and they all keep feeding me the same blindingly obvious answers, like turning off my popup blockers or re-setting my IE security settings.
I discovered a forum from a couple of years ago with an individual who described the exact same problem. The forum is titled "JavaScript links do not work" for reference.
I have gone through all of the same steps as best as i could and ended up with all the same results but have still been unable to correct the problem. My knowlege on these matters is very limited. One detail I did notice however, is that this problem always occurs on pages within a sucure domain.
I don't know what significance, if any, this may have.
If anyone has any more ideas, I would greatly appreciate your input. I am losing my mind trying to find an answer.

We own and operate an ISP and on our website we have a few secure links, one being to the a customers account management website and the link that allows some one to sign up online. No customers or other employee's have this problem, so it's not a site issue. But I have one inparticuler user that if she attempts to log into the Account Management screen, it pops us a domain login screen for her and forces her to use her network user/pass. On top of this, she was testing out some sign up information and up on completing the process she clicked on our Submit link and instead of taking her to the receipt page like it does everyone else, it redirects her to our internal secure website. I realize with out seeing this one it's hard to diagnose.. but again, taking the website out of being a factor as 50,000 customers use it just fine along with our other employee's. i've checked the hosts file, nothing there.. I've deleted cookies ect.. I've reset IE to defaults. Nothing. My only other option is to try and tear it down and re-install IE and i'm not sure this will fix it. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Hi curious mew,

The link may be infected.

CNET could not care if ppl left malware in the free to try and trial period  programs  in their system
I did not even download anything and only read the program review. My laptop was infected.
All my browsers will leave a  html command line promoting the program and auto updating of the command line whenever I am online.

Hi,
I was here once before and you help me alot, so I'm trying again.
Ever since I downloaded SP2 (I have windows XP home edition) I get Java errors ( must have java enabled) or/and while I'm inside of secure web sites the hyper links don't work. When I click on some links, but not all, my browser (IE 6.0.2900 most upto date) tries to open the new link but I get a
"done" at the bottom of the page and nothing happens. Also when I log out of secure web sites, I get " Page Can't be Displayed Errors"
These are links/Pages that I can get to on an older computer I have running Windows 98 and an older version of IE.
I have my Java enabled under internet options and also have enabled cookies. I've shut down the pop up blocker and firewall, which did not help. I've added some programs but only noticed this issue since installing SP2.
For example, when I log into Ebay, I get the error "If you are seeing this page, your browser settings prevent you from automatically redirecting to a new URL. Please click here to continue." When I click "here " to continue nothing happens. Like its a dead link. I've been tweeking settings now for over two months, ( as this is not a major problem just an anoyence) but I give up. Help!
Thanks

A few days ago I began having problems with links being redirected. Also, adware programs and vista system updates were errroring out when updating. I first had a problem with Spybot. It found a program it could not fix (I did not write it down) and if I tried to update Spybot it would give me an error message. I tried to remove and reinstall Spybot and it will not even install the program. Lavasoft's Ad-aware will not update from the internet I had to download the update from CNet in order to update. There are six updates for Vista waiting to be installed but none will install they all fail.

Also I am constantly being redirected when using search engines. The google sponsored links never reach the website and the other links first take you to other links like shopzilla and other things related to the website you want. You have to go back and follow the link twice to get where you want to go. If the site I am visiting has ads the browser sometimes jumps to the site of the ad.

I have tried the following programs with no luck: Ad-Aware, McAfee Security Center, Advanced SystemCare 3, Ccleaner, Spywareblaster, and Windows Defender.

Hello, bill.king34
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

Your System is Infected with a Backdoor!!

Try choosing "Mark as safe" shown by "You may not know this sender"
Also, I believe adding the sender to your address book will allow images to be shown automatically.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi, i seem to have got myself some malware/virus hope you guys can help, here's the problem;

All links in search engines (google etc) get redirected to (seemingly) random ad-sties. Internet security sites such as these forums, castlecops, lavasoft, etc, all appear to be blocked and won't load.

First problem occurred when AVG popped up saying it found a trojan. I tried to heal it which appeared to work, but when I ran a scan all AVG components suddenly disabled. Also windows firewall started turning itself off, i assume all these problems are related?

I saw another thread with similar redirect problems and the reply said to download and run ComboFix so I did that (I hope this wasn't a bad idea; I need my computer for work so wanted to save as much time as possible..)

The first thing that I noticed was that google links were not taking me where they said they were (initially in Firefox, then also in IE), and then noticed that my McAfee Security Center was not running. When I tried to start it up and update it, it simply sat there. I tried to access their website, but it is completely blocked. I obviously have something messing with my system, but I have no idea where to start. I am including the HijackThis log below. Any suggestions?

tetonbob was helping me out. I did not reply straight away... got busy with Xmas work and we've lived off our other computers for a few days.

As requested I am starting a new thread. Here is the link to the 1st one antivirus links and updates blocked - gmer not running

I visited the webpage for download links and instructions for running combofix.

Downloaded Combofix.

Found out the dang eMachine computer having the problem came with a blank set of recovery disks so...

I downloaded recovery console from MS.

**Both of the download links were blocked in the computer having the problem so I downloaded to my Vista and shot them over the network to the XP eMachine with problem.

I did the drag and drop thing with the MS file onto Combofix.

I checked again and again for running antivirus, malware and firewalls but...

I can not get Combofix to run on that computer.

Combo fix shows it's running task manager under Processes but I get no command prompt like in the example on this page

I'm half thinking now to pull all the files off that computer and reinstall windows from scratch.

There is a 2nd hard drive in that computer which we use just for photo's. I think I should pull that out and scan it in another computer to be safe.

If I back up all the user files on the OS hard drive to another computer will I be safe just scanning them?

If I reinstall the OS might this take care of problem or could it live on? Would I have to reformat that hard... Read more

All of the sudden I ran into major malware issues. My search links in google were redirected to adsites and any website that looked helpful would not be found. Pretty much any website related to virus help was blocked. My system restore was also blocked in the sense that if I attempted it, I could get to the confirm page and then clicking next did nothing.

Now, I was finally able to copy over the registry files from a previous restore using the windows xp recovery console from my Dell backup disk. It's allowed me to get to the point of being able to post on this forum, download hijack this and get the log.

The previously blocked Malwarebytes found nothing, spyblocker search and destroy removed win32.agent and win32.banker. AVG popped up immediately after I got back into windows with this new registry with a few trojans to heal.

So what's left? here's the log
(by the way I haven't restarted yet after the Spybot run, I notice this in the log. Am about to do that.)

Hi everybody,

I have recently been affected by nasty viruses/trojans on both my pc and my laptop. I will start with my laptop since it is newer.

I have had the laptop for about a year now, running Vista with no problems and no viruses or spyware to bother me. I now have a malicious infection on the computer which has caused a number of issues:

-Internet Explorer opens, but does not load any websites
-Firefox works, but all Google links redirect to useless websites
- All antivirus websites are somehow blocked and Firefox cannot find their servers. This means I cannot run online virus scans
-My Norton Protection Center antivirus (which is also expired) freezes upon trying to run a virus scan
-AVG cannot install because when it tries to connect to the update server, the virus blocks the connection and it cannot find the server.
-my laptop had its first ever blue screen of death and restarted
- Upon restart, the computer now runs incredibly slow and Performance CPU Usage ranges from 97% to 100% while in the Processes tab of Task Manager nothing seems to be eating up any CPU at all.
-There are false instances of iexplore.exe using up memory (these come and go)
-I tried running the GMER program but it caused my computer to blue screen and crash for the second time

Please help, I don't know what to do!!

It may be your anti-virus is blocking that address and it will need to be added to a secure list.
I'm not sure how it is done exactly so hopefully one of the techs with browser and networking experience can help.

Hi:

My colleague brought me his computer. Apparently, he uninstalled AVG and at some point installed Malware Defense. I've deleted all traces of Malware Defense from the registry and unregistered the associated dlls but I cannot successfully install AVG9--the installation always fails due to not responding in a timely fashion. I can install Spybot 1.62 but it won't launch in either regular nor safe mode. Likewise I can install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but it won't respond.

Any ideas?

First symptom was that the desktop icon to go to IE resulted in "Cannot find server"

Started to open IE from the program list , until that no longer worked ( 2 days)
IE is getting online, I can ping sites and my anti virus updates etc but IE will not open any web sites - except secure ones

Hopefully the solution is in the log file to follow. Thanks !

I think I got a virus - I can't change the firewall settings anymore, on avast - my real time shields status is unknown and it won't let me turn it on. When I try to turn it on it says "Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable."

ALso I can't access the internet. I get the computer icon with the exclamation mark and when I try to diagnose, it says "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings."

I scanned with spyware doctor, malwarebytes, adware, super antispyware already and now scanning with avast. The previous ones removed alot of viruses but I still think there are some remaining.

I can't even use restore point cause it always fails :/ Please help!

Updated with ark.txt, attach.txt, and DDS.txt

I wasn't sure how to compress them with windows compressor cause it became a winrar file so I just left it as normal.

I am trying to make an secure POP3 (port 995) and secure IMAP (port 993) connection thru Verizon FIOS via the ActionTec MI424WR modem/router/802.11G box that Verizon supplied. I am running Vista, and I am using Outlook 2007, which is set to these ports.

I wanted to do this with the firewall set to the "Maximum Security (High)" setting.

These ports were not available in the ActionTec's pick list so I added these ports (using the "Advanced" tab and then under "Protocols") so they read "TCP any -> 993" and "TCP any -> 995"

I tried adding these ports to the "Access Control" table, and the "Port Forwarding" table and the "Advanced Filtering" table but none worked.

The Verizon Tech Support line worker told me the only solution was to enable the DMZ host and set it to be the IP address of the computer I happened to be on.

To my astonisment, with DMZ enabled, the "Access Control" rules seemed to kick in for the DMZ host and my secure POP3 would only work if I had this port allowed in the "Access Control" table.

Questions:
1. Is it safe to run with DMZ pointing to my computer.

I thought this effectively brought the "DMZ host" (i.e. my computer) outsied the firewall and exposed all the ports on my computer directly to the internet. (But if that were the case, then

2. why does the Access Control table work only to the DMZ host???

3. How do I make the "Ac... Read more

DMZ does indeed expose the computer directly to the outside world, that's why it's called the DMZ!

Do you have residential or commercial FiOS? There are blocked ports for the residential service.

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Both are followed by specific connection and encryption information, i.e. TLS 1.2.

I have 2 problems which I believe to be unrelated but no virus scan or malware scans have detected any problems. The first started a while ago and my windows update will not connect to download updates. I believe something is blocking it. Also if I go to the microsoft website to download an update manually when I click to download I get a page cannot load error. So I think something is stopping me from updating my version of windows (Vista SP1).

The next issue just started recently and at first I suspected it was just one webpage and it was their issue. Whenever I'd go to the site it'd redirect to an ad, different each time. It would block all access to the site because it'd just redirect to an ad site. Then as randomly as it started, it will occasionally let me onto the site and then again start redirecting. I thought it was the site because it does this in every browser and also on my Mac in safari & firefox. If I try opening with NoScript running it just opens a blank page. Anyway I now believe it's not that site that's the problem because now another unrelated site is doing the same thing.

I tried doing everything listed in the "before you post" thread but RootRepeal will not run. It just freezes at the "Initializing" screen. I did a search and found one place where someone having that problem was told to rename it something else but when I did that I got "Could not load driver (0xc0000035)!".

Here is the stuff from runn... Read more

In my Home Office using my Notebook and wireless router I have WEP encryption with a Network security key. But I am often away on the road in Asia and I connect to both unsecured and WEP secured wireless networks in restaurants, hotels and internet cafes.

When I need to log in to certain web sites to attend to important personal info like bank accounts and credit cards and make payments etc I often avoid it for fear of this information being visible or accessible to others, even on the WEP secured ones.

I 'm wondering though, if it shows the connection as WEP secured in Manage Wireless Connections, does that mean things are secure or can other people using the same wireless pick up on what others around them are sending and receiving?

I guess what I am asking is, how can I know if a wireless connection is safe on the road and is there anything I can do to make it safe or safer? I suspect many others encounter this same issue.

Thanks,
G

hello, i used acronis true image and disk director suite and successfully cloned and backup disks many times. recently i installed pgp enterprise to secure the disk. as fate would have it i decided to increase the secure zone partition. the operating system on boot prompted for pgp password to decrypt the drive and then acronis loaded and i used the partition management option. the partition limit of secure zone was enhanced from 55 gb to 61 gb (limit being shown as 69gb). the three steps that appeared were C drive size being fixed from 55 gb to 45 gb, D drive (which was pgp secured) was shown to be going NO change and the third step was the Secure Zone expanding from 45 GB to 51 gb or so. when all the steps were done, the system booted. as always the first prompt was PGP secure disk, i entered the password but the second prompt for Acronis halted and Displayed a fatal error and asked to press enter to attempt to boot the OS. On pressing Enter the system booted and the OS was normal EXCEPT that the D drive was being shown as Raw (i.e. needed to formatted). On inspecting the D drive with Acronis disk manager the three partitions were visible the C and Secure zone with the newly allocated disk space but the D was being shown as RAW Although the D disk size was being shown as before, i.e. 45 GB. All assets are resided in the D drive. Please advise how to recover or restore the partitions.

I read through the pre-posting guidelines and attempted to download DDS, but this virus or whatever is on my computer has completely blocked my ability to download anything that could potentially help you guys help me. If there is a workaround that someone knows that I don't, please let me know. I'll do whatever I need to to get this damn thing off my computer. It started as a Google redirect virus which I seemed to have under control, and then all of a sudden my data usage spiked today and everything that I normally use to control something like this stopped working. What I can tell you is that when I saw my data go out of control, I opened my Task Manager and found dllhost.exe *32 COM Surrogate running and it will not stop. I had never seen that running before. I'm just at a complete loss. I really hope you guys can help me and if not... walk me through a complete and utter wipe, reformat, whatever you call it.

I was able to run DDS and TDSSKiller from a jump drive. No reaction from TDSSKiller - no threats found. Log from DDS is included below. I should probably also say that this was run in Safe Mode since I didn't know if it would even work in a regular boot. If I need to run it in a regular boot, let me know and I can post that log as well.

Good evening. Download TDSSKiller.zip from Kaspersky from here and save it to your Desktop. You will then need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder. To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again. In the final window, click on Finish Double click TDSSKiller.exe to begin. Click Start scan and allow the tool to do just that. One the scan has completed, if the tool detects anything the default action is Cure - please click on that and change it to Skip. Finally, click on Report and let me have the contents of the text file that will open.
