DVD Optical Drive not reading movies

Q: DVD Optical Drive not reading movies

My optical drive will play audio CDs and load programs, but will not play DVD movies - the DVD starts to load and eventually will show the title of the movie and then jerks from frame to frame. The drive has been replaced, but with the same problem and a long session with a very helpful technician at HP Support did not resolve the issue. A new drive is on the way to try again - not hopeful. However, an external DVD drive works via a USB connection. Anyone else experienced this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a problem with my ASUS SDRW-08D1S-U external optical drive. My computer is an HPMini notebook with Windows XP, but the problem persist on my HPPavilion with Vista, and my daugther's Eee with XP. When plugged in via USB, the disk drive appears on My Computer Folder as DVD RW Drive (F). When I insert a Video DVD it works ok (plays the movie fine). However, when a music CD, or a program disk is inserted, it reads the disk, but then the drive icon on the folder dissapears, and it keeps reading the disk without any action. The last time I used it, about 6 weeks ago, it read a program disk, loaded, and used the program ok. So its a new thing today. Any ideas how to solve it? Thanks.

DVD / CDRW combination drives are notorious for one part of the function dying....they use two different lasers from what I have read, so they can partly be bad while the other function is still OK. There is no fix.

I don't know the age or warranty coverage, but check on that it may still be covered......

If it behaves the same on more than one PC it's shot.

You could check on the Windows features called Autoplay and try to set the default action, for example when a program disk (application) is put into the drive, I want X to happen (usually, either run or Open to view files and folders....

This is a weird one. Today, suddenly, for no apparent reason, the drive (a TSSTcorp TS-T633A) in my brand new Dell Studio 1535 stopped reading a lot of discs (but not all discs, strangely).

For an example, it does read: a DVD of Jacob's Ladder, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (a CD-ROM) and R.E.M. Automatic for the People (an audio CD).

It does not read, well, anything else, including The Sims 2 and all the expansions, which include both CD- and DVD-ROMs, any of my Deep Space 9 DVDs or a home-burned backup data DVD.

So it reads, out of my entire CD-ROM and DVD collection, a single DVD video disc and one CD-ROM game. (I only have the one audio CD.)

What the heck? If it wasn't reading anything at all then the problem would be obvious (broken drive...) but this sudden extreme pickyness leads me to believe that something I did caused the problem. The last disc I was able to use in the drive was The Sims 2: Nightlife, which I installed with no problems (that particular one is a CD-ROM). I then put in the Pets expansion (a DVD-ROM) to install, and was told there was no disc in the drive. Since then it has not recognised any discs at all, apart from the three at the top.

Is this something to do with some kind of copy protection (known to be on some of The Sims 2 games) breaking my drive? If so, how do I fix it? And if it's not that, then what's wrong?

It may just need a cleaning with a commercial, wet, laser lens cleaner. You can find them often at 49-cent stores.

OK my first post here. I'm usually pretty good at searching out problems and solving them but this one has me stumped.
On the same PC, two different optical drives on two different controllers (one onboard IDE ASUS DRW-1612BL, on PCI SATA Silicon Image SiI 3114 controller a SONY BWU-200S) have suddenly stopped reading disks under XPPro.
"windows cannot read from this disk. The file system may be corrupt..etc" Doesn't matter what kind of disk - DVD, DVD-ROM, CD data or BluRay data. (one drive is a Sony BD writer)

Here is what I have already tried:
Booted in safe mode - drives worked properly!
Both drives will read disks at boot (eg XP install disk)

So I'm fairly sure I've ruled out hardware, but not a hardware driver that only loads under XP outside of safe mode.
I have installed new hardware: An Atto Celerity FC-41ES Fibre Channel Controller. I have this same card running the same drivers on other PCs without this weird effect. Still it could be the culprit as the timeframes seem to match.
Under XP I can see the sessions on the disks in Nero but cannot read them.

Any ideas before I pull the Atto card and test? I've tried rolling back the PC too but ng.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5N32E SLI PLUS and up to now has been the most rock solid PC in the house.

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

A:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

Thanks.

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

Hello there,

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

Mac osx 10.6.8
2.66 GHZ i7

Thanks!

I just built a nice little powerhouse for my girlfriend. It's all up and running great, but I ran into a strange snag along the way.

First of all I'm using the new 915 Intel board (not sure the exact number ATM, but it is Intel brand) with a PCI Express, LGA775 chipset.

I currently have one 36.7 GB WD Raptor on a SATA connection. The only optical drive is a CD/DVD +/- RW combo on it's own (and only) IDE channel. I opened up the BIOS on first boot, and noticed that even though the correct model number showed up in the Drive Options, it was displayed as being a Floppy Drive!

Confused, I switched the jumper setting.... still no change. Switched to the last jumper setting.. tried removing the jumper completely, nope ! OK, so I decide I'll set the jumper back to the Master position and let Windows try to sort it out.

I install windows off my USB DVD-drive. Flawless install, but even in Windows it displays a Floppy Drive! There is no Floppy drive connected. I then proceed to close the case and barf all over the damn thing out of pure frustration. puke:

I'm freakin out here! I've built several computers and worked on countless others and have NEVER EVER seen anything like this. Granted, the RAID thing is new to me, and I'm guessing it probably has something to do with that.

A:Optical Drive being recognized as a Floppy Drive !

Welcome to Techspot !

I know you are experienced ,but sometimes the simple stuff.
Given the newness of this architecture I would lean towards the necessity of a bios file update.
Since the bios sees it as a floppy but has the correct Model and I take you loaded Windows from it, it obviously works.
Does your Bios settings allow you to manually chose the drive type and DMA etc.If yes
Disable all IDE channels not in use. and turn off 'auto configure '
Check the web site and tech support there could be a bug fix in the works.
Let us know how far you get.

P.S. Sorry missed you loaded from USB,However if the drive can read media etc. my point is the same.

Ok now i have a question... do you need a blu-ray optical drive to watch blu ray disc on your comp.. cause when i was on newegg and was looking up stuff it had dual layer dvd burner/whatever... does that mean i can watch blu ray with it? since it is a dual layer dvd. idk i was just wondering cause im wanting to get a laptop with blu-ray so i dont have to buy a hdtv and a blu ray player and be poor for the rest of my life cause then im gonna have to get hdtv cable and what not. lol.. i was just wondering what the basic essentials are for watching blu-ray disc on a pc.. or buring as well.

A:Blu-ray optical drive?

The dual layer burner doesn't mean bluray. There are Dual Layer DVDs, in fact, that is what most store bought DVDs are. Single layer will only get you ~4.3 gigs. Dual will get you about 8.5.

You can buy a bluray drive for a PC though for less than $100, and then output your video to a HDTV and get full bluray HD.

If you get a laptop with bluray and never output it to TV, you are doing yourself a disservice, because the resolution for bluray movies is going to be higher than your laptop's display can do (in most cases).

A:new optical drive?

You can try this site: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/ or eBay. I think those would be your best bets to insure you get the proper drive.

Good luck.

I've already updated the drives and also did a System Recovery to no avail. What went wrong, and what's the solution. Does anybody have an idea. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Have had this issue for several months. It will read a disk right now but in 20min it may disappear or it maybe a couple days. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?

I have a Dell Studio 1735 running Vista Ultimate ....

I have it set to go to stand by when I close the Lid. When it goes to stand by and come back... The DVD-RW (My F Drive) is gone. I mean its really like its gone.

It wont read disks, eject them, or even take one. (For those you you that dont know Studios have a Slot Drive not the Drawer Drive)

It seems like there is no power to it. If I restart the PC it comes back and works fine until it goes to stand by a few times.

I have tried downloading the drivers for it and reinstalling them. Ive tried just uninstalling the drivers and letting Windows use the generic ones. Nothing works. It seems like a driver issue to me, I may be wrong I am human.

If anyone has any info much accepted!!!!

Not sure where to post this so I can move it if necessary.

Started up my laptop today and I tried to open the cd rom/dvd bay and nothing happened. It will open with a pin pressed into the release hole, but not with the button. (Asus u50f)

When I looked in the device manager there was no drive listed. in computer management/storage/disk management there is no drive showing.

I took out the drive it looks ok. Is there anyway to test it or do I need to buy one and try it?

Thanks,

Warren

Hey Paul -Hope you had a glorious Christmas? My clients HP Tower (see specs above) has decided - from 1 day to the next - not to 'see' the HP brand optical drive that came in it from the factory. What I've done to trouble shoot the issue: 1. I removed that drive, connected it to another HP tower here in my shop.  Works PERFECTLY.2. Got a different optical drive from my stock and installed it in clients HP.  Does NOT 'see' it.3. Installed different cable to both drives while in clients HP. NO CHANGE.4. Connected a NEW External USB optical drive.  NO CHANGE. I'm STUCK, Paul.  Suggestion - other than a NEW HP tower - would be appreciated.... ! Patrick Dowling

A:Optical drive not available.

Hi, Pat: Yes I did, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! The only suggestion I can offer regarding that issue is to see if one of the resolution steps at the link below resolve the problem. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060 Normally, Resolution step 6 fixes the problem of the DVD drive not showing up, but try them all if 6 doesn't work.

This is just a simple but a wired issue that i faced in one of my friends computer, first the optical drive was not getting detected in MY COMPUTER, I deleted the upper/lower filter and the drive was detected, but it was not recogising the disk, after i installed the firmware the media was getting detected and but it was not reading the content of any cd not even the OS cd, i followed this KB Article of Autoplay because even that was an issue - but even that did not work. The optical drive did not even boot from a bootable cd, But one thing that i noticed is that the Icon of the drive changes if there is a cd inside as if there is a cd.

What can be the issue...???

I have installed an extra dvd burner to my tower the system has recognized the drive as D.and it shows in my computer as D. but if I go into my docs or any other folder and right click the send to box it will not show drive D - E together it either shows one or the other.
I have reinstalled it but that does't work. When i do access it it does work correctly.

You can't send to multiple locations, so I'm confused as to what you're trying to do.

I just turned my machine on and went to install a new program and nothing happened (auto-load didn't kick in). Checked my Windows Explorer and both of my DVD drives are not listed. So, I rebooted and still the same thing. I went into device manager and the Optical Drives are shown but with the "!" Yield symbol.

What gives? These drives were working just fine yesterday!

Help! Need to install this program ASAP for work...
