Q: ThinkPad W520 microphone troubleshooting

Hello, I am trying to connect an external microphone to my Lenovo P50. The operating system is Windows 10 64. The laptop is not recognizing the microphone. I heave a headphone jack in the laptop and whether I connect a headset or a microphone by itself, I can not locate it. The headphones work but the microphone is not working. Any solutions? I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The subject of your message says ThinkPad W520, but in it you mention a ThinkPad P50.  Is this about a P50?  If so, I believe the headset jack on the P50 uses a TRRS pin-out, which is standard for headsets that connect to PCs, laptops, most Android smartphones and tablets and so forth.  Apple-compatible devices use a TRSS pin-out too, but one that is wired differently.  If you are using an Apple-branded or Apple compatible external microphone, some sort of adapter cable may be required.

Hi guys, Yesterday I upgraded from win7 to win10, but I noticed that my microphone button doesn't work anymore. The orange light is always off, and pressing the button does nothing. It is possible to enable/disable the microphone with option menus, but I would like it to work with the button as well.Anyone has any experience? Thanks!

Hi all! I'm a new Thinkpad user and I've got to say, the Thinkpad experience is great. It's refreshing to come to a laptop with more features and better accessibility compared to other laptop brands. I love that nearly every inch of my Thinkpad is easy to get to and fix if something goes wrong. That said, I've been having screen issues lately.  Basically, every time I move the Thinkpad off my lap and onto my bed, the screen slightly ripples in the middle. Like this, except it occurs towards the lower middle half of the screen. Gently pressing on the bezels of the screen (left and right) also cause ripples in the same area (lower middle half)--maybe this is supposed to happen, since you're deliberately pressing against the screen. Moving the screen up or down also makes the ripple occur. I always move my screen back and forth as gently and firmly as I can--with both hands gripping either side of the screen. But even when I'm being super careful, the screen still ripples. Tapping the back of the screen ever so slightly also causes ripples. Now that's what's worrying me the most. A gentle, slight tap shouldn't cause ripples on the screen, surely. The ripples get BIG if I tap the lower middle of the Thinkpad's lid. I can't say that I've noticed this behaviour before. It seems to have started just recently. I removed the screen's plastic frame and cleaned the sides of the LCD, thinking that something was stuck between the frame and the LCD, but doing ... I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 since many years and it is still one of the best laptop compared to those available in the market. I have successfully upgraded in the past my HD with a 256 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (MZ-7KE256BW). Now I would like to replace this HD with the newest 1 TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO SERIES 1TB SATA3 MZ-76P1T0B/EU.Someone know if there could be problems of compatibility? P.S. the operative system was windows 7 but I moved subsequently to windows 10. Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hello all, I have a real difficulty choosing between these two W520 and T530.  Both are used and prices close.  The main differences are listed as below: (1) CPUW520  i7-2720QMT530  i5-3320M(2) Graphics and displayW520  Nvidia graphics card (Quadro 2000) with FHDT530 Intel 4000 with 1600x900 (3) PriceW520 is $60 more than T530. I am planning to use the laptop mostly for word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation in classroom, HD video watching, no video editing.  Any advice or helpful information will be appreciated.

A:Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

I've run into some trouble with my headphone microphone that I haven't been able to solve, and was hoping for some ideas.

I am running Windows 7 64bit. The computer I've built myself with components I've selected. The relevant components are:ASUS Maximus VII Hero motherboard
Intel i5 4690K
nVidia GeForce GTX 970 (would not expect a conflict w/ microphone, but just incase).
Headset is a Logitech G430 at first, then I've since tried a Steel Series 5HV3 (At first I figured the original headset was just old/broken, so I bought a new one to try - ended up with the same problem).
I've been using a headset with a microphone for months on this computer without issue. I had used it without problem last night. Then this morning, it simply didn't work. The sound output still comes through the earphones, it's just the microphone that doesn't work. Nothing is showing as disabled, no volume sliders are at zero, nothing is muted either in windows or on the microphone itself (it has a volume control along the wires), and every setting and place I look everything appears normal. I can't even think of an event that would act as a catalyst for a problem - I don't recall installing any new drivers, software, etc. between the time of my last use and it not working.

Things I've tried: I've tried using the various inputs and jacks around the computer. I've used the front panel inputs (which is where it had worked in the past), and the ones at the back of the motherboard I/O. I've got the green ... Read more

I have the same problem with my Sennheiser. I'm also using Realtek drivers. I tried the same things and my sounds works just fine (e.g. listening to music). My webcam mic is also working (USB).
Additional to what you wrote I get an echo of my PC sounds when checking my recording device.

This laptop has been driving me crazy with the number of BSOD's encountered.  I receive at least 1 per week but often three to four over the last 4 months or so.
I have updated all of the drivers as well as the BIOS from the Lenovo site but the frequency of these crashes has not diminished at all.  I know of quite a few friends that have this same model and they are not reporting these kind of issues.  Just wondering if anyone can guide me to what I might try next.
Below please find the lising of the crashes I have had.  The minidump files are here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3064584/Minidump.zip

Hello all,  I just got a Thinkpad Mini Dock 3 with the USB 3.0 port. However, the dock port does not work with my W520 (which has USB 3.0 on it). The dock port does work with my X220 (yes, old school), however (which also has 3.0 port). So, the fault is not the dock, but some kind of issue between the W520 and the Mini Dock. I've uninstailled and reinstalled the 3.0 hub driver, updated drivers, and searched everywhere but cannot find a fix. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this issue? Thanks kindly,Dylan

Hello,I understand that this question was probably asked a million times, but unfortunately I haven't found a viable solution for my problem. I'll try to describe it in details. I bought a pre-owned W520 laptop, that's supposed to have a Windows 7 Pro. For some reason, the previous owner removed the COA sticker, that was located under the battery. The hard disk is also wiped clean, so no recovery partition is available. I want to install and activate a geniune Windows 7. Some pirated copy of windows is installed there, I tried to extract a license key with Belarc Advisor, but it was some generic OEM key found on the internet, i.e. not genuine. The summary of my talk with the local support and service center- I can't just install any copy of Windows 7 (say download an image from Microsoft), it won't activate without a COA key that is missing- if I can get a recovery media for this exact laptop, it will maybe activate from the key in BIOS- we don't know where to get this recovery media so if someone could help me with these questions- can I legally download a recovery image for this laptop (I only found some links for windows 10 downgrade, which I'm not eligible for)- can I extract the key from BIOS and maybe install a generic Windows 7 - is there even an OEM key in BIOS (because the guys from support center told me it's only for windows 8 and 10, not for 7) and will it activate? thanks in advance. Oleg.

I'll try to give you as much information needed for anyone to help me troubleshoot my problem.

Problem is that the microphone is not working at all and I don't know if it ever did. My sister in Mi. just got a webcam and so we both trying to view/talk to each other, I could see and hear her, but she could only see me, not hear me. Even though I have had this computer since October of 2007, I have never used the webcam or microphone that came with the laptop.

I spent about an hour searching for help on the Dell Support with no luck, plus I am not able to ask for help I guess because I don't have the extra money to pay for support. I have the owners manual and have looked for info about this in the book, but there is nothing on the microphones except it only shows the location of them on the laptop. I searched on here in the forums for about an hour looking for similar problems but didn't find one to resemble my problem.

I did go into the control panel/ sounds speech and audio device/ and did the TEST HARDWARE. It does NOT seem to pick up my voice at all. In the "sound recording" section it shows my device, (Sigma Tel Audio), under "microphone" select IS checked, volume is turned all the way up.

I don't know if this additional information will help or not but there are a few other things I noticed that don't work. My "Dell Media Direct" button at the top of the keyboard and the "Prnt Scrn" button on the ... Read more

I am going under the assumption that this page is right in telling me what the most up to date driver for my system is (I have a Quadro 1000M). Both Lenovo Vantage and System Update tell me there are no updates, and yet my most recent NVidia driver was from 2016 and several versions behind what the website says. No matter how many times I've downloaded and installed that package the driver stayed the same, so I gave up and used DDU to wipe the NVidia drivers out. Then I tried using the package again to install the driver and still it appears to do absolutely nothing regarding the NVidia Card. It doesn't appear under Device Manager. There's only an Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. What am I doing wrong?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

Hey this is my first post as I'm new here. I have been having an issue which has been going on for several months.

Every 30 minutes, to the second, my laptop completely shuts down (I have tried running in safe mode too). No matter what programs are running, or aren't, it continues to shut down.

I have made a work-around, where I put the computer to sleep roughly every 28 minutes, then I wake it. This seems to reset the 'timer'. Lately it seems my computer will not sleep properly, or it will not wake from sleep (power button starts slowly blinking, not pulsing, green to black), however I think this is a different unrelated issue.

Things I have tried but have NOT worked: Running without battery, re-seating RAM, new thermal paste (I thought the problem originally had to do with the system temperature as it was getting quite hot), I have made sure there are NO TIMERS for sleep, or shut down set for the graphics card (NVIDIA Quadro 2000M) or in Lenovo Power Manager. I have made sure my drivers are up to date and that my BIOS is also up to date.

One more noteworthy thing; I had problems with my WMI event registration/viewer as it caused my computer to crash at completely random (minutes to hours, even to days) times. I ran a script I found (from a reputable website and I did a backup first) to fix this error I found in my event viewer (it did fix it). The 30 minute shut-downs did not happen immediately after I ran the script, but rather about a week later, perhaps t... Read more

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 running Windows 10 x64 bit and would like to use the Bluetooth. Unfortunately, there is currently only a Microsoft Generic Driver installed and it won't find any of my Bluetooth devices. I would like to download a driver that will actually work and so I went to the Lenovo website to find a working driver. However, apparently there are no bluetooth drivers that are compatible with Windows 10 and this laptop. So how am I supposed to be able to use my laptop with bluetooth? Thanks for any help in advance.

I got a W520 and installed the card, drivers and hardware is seen properly (I'm using Win7 x64bit)but it keeps looking like it is turned off (how you turn off wifi).  Though when I press FN+F5 it doesn't show mobile broadband, only wifi and bluetooth I use the AirCard Watcher app and it keep saying Airplane Mode, radio is off.when I disable and enable the card via network settings.    The Aircard watch see the card for about a split second when I reenable it but then it goes right backto airplane mode.. I also tried using the Lenovo access connection and when I try to connect to mobile broadband . it keep saying no signal or sim not activated  BTW: I have a working Verizon Sim card that I use for a usb dongle and I have a x240 with broadband card that works fine with the SIM  so it's not a sim card problem.

Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... Dear Community,As the title suggests, I did a full system reset recently. That was because my old HDD seemed to start dying and slowing down the system a lot.Now I have a brand new HDD (Seagate firecuda 2TB) and installed everything I found on the Lenovo support page for my System (4284-4DG) after installing all important Windows updates. So far so good - I guess. At least Lenovo Service Bridge/System Update don't suggest any further software. But I'm facing some issues already:1) The Hotkey Feature Integration seems not to work! Not only do I not see any OSD, but also half of the Fn+FXX combinations aren't working (like Fn+F5 - Fn+F8, Fn+F2, Fn+F3...).2) I can therefore not access the Communications Utility (unless searching the .exe) nor the Connections Tab (F5). In the latter one Bluetooth isn't even listed (but always on)3) The Power Manager is very limited in functionality like I do not have a Battery Management button nor can I adjust the default screen brightness in the Energy Profiles. I remember that this was very possible before.4) The Device Manager shows still unknown objects: PCI-Communication Controller (simple)(? => loose translation from German, maybe slightly different English name) and an unknown device. As said before, I installed every driver I could find in the list from Lenovo. I have no clue what this could be.5) Windows Update shows me some optional Updates which I did not install yet, because I always read that one should install drivers from the PC ... Read more

I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Hello all, Recently purchased an 11e and it's great for what I need it for. Anyways fired up Skype to talk to some friends and basically, the microphone does not pick up any sound and when it does, it crackles and pops (from what my friends said) albeit at very low volume. I'm having a spot of bother with my thinkpad t40 and soundmax. I'm trying to have a line-in into the microphone-in port to record directly through a studio mixer but for some reason it's still recording through the voice mic on the laptop itself. I would have thought it would automatically cancel out the voice mic when you plug something in the mic-in port, like when you plug in headphones to something, it negates the sound from the speakers..

Is there any way to accomplish what I'm trying to. I have the soundmax drivers installed but also have installed the asio4all drivers as I have studio software on the laptop too..

I'm running xp pro btw..

I've searched your forums for this (and exhausted Google several times), and haven't quite found a response to it.

I have a Thinkpad (Lenovo R61, if that helps at all), and am coming to terms with this frustrating device known as the internal microphone.

Basically, all I want is to turn if off. Disable it. Be done with the wretched thing.

I use SoundCapture to record audio sometimes from websites (nothing heinous, just soundbytes to help with my studies). It works fine on my desktop computer, but this internal mic on my laptop is playing havoc with it. (Every time I try to record something, it merely becomes a muffled background noise, and in the foreground there is only the recordings that the microphone has picked up.)

I have tried going to Control Panel > Sound & Audio Devices and playing with the Audio and Voice options there (such as turning the volume down on both Sound and Audio Recording options). However, after doing that, I still could not get SoundCapture to successfully record any sound coming from the computer (or any alternative recording programs, for that matter). Also, now when I try and use a sound capturing program, the only 'source' I have available to select is Microphone.

I'm sure I'm probably doing something wrong; I don't claim to be a whizz with computers. But it's very frustrating all the same.

Any help would be lovely, either with turning this bloody internal mic off, or figuring out just w... Read more

Hello, all.My T420 audio system has worked perfectly for years. But, starting in January 2018 the microphone mutes itself, no matter what I do with its settings. Sometimes the muting happens in a few seconds, sometimes after a few minutes. I can watch it happen in the microphone levels window. I suspect a Windows update or new version of Skype caused the problem. I have been unable to fic it. Neither Malwarebytes nor any Windows security scanning software see any issues. This is especially aggravating since I'm a software engineer used to fixing bugs. (Yes, I've watched the YouTube videos about this problem, to no avail.) Anybody have a fix for this?Cheers,Dave

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.

Hi, matanm
I would recommend making sure that you have the latest BIOS for your machine installed, as an older BIOS can sometimes cause issues with the microphone. The latest update for your BIOS can be found here.
Hope it helps,

The mic is not picking up sound, suffice to say I have tried every fix possible via Lenovo or MS forums to no avail over the last 5 hours. Too many to list so could you guys please throw every fix you know at me in the hope that I have not tried one. I have tried diagnostics also via Lenovo and nothing is showing as wrong. As I said all updates, drivers etc installed correctly via Lenovo and the system is running Win10. I also tried reinstalling the system to no avail. Fingers crossed. scotty66

Hi,Just bought a X1 extreme and got 2 serious issues that prevent me from working, -First, it seems impossible to plug a mic on the mixed connector. When I do that, realtek app see it as a speaker (or do not see it at all), and so I'm stuck with the utterly bad microphone embedded with the laptop. It is a microphone with no drivers, always used it on other computers just by pluging it and that's all.The only thread I found on that subject is this one https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x1-headphone-mic-jack-NOT-WORKING/m-p/508115 (which does not answer to my issue) -My second issue is with the active pen 2 from lenovo. It seems to work well with windows bloc note and sketch app but on photoshop the active pen 2 levels of pressure once every 4 or 5 strokes is no more detected and so this stroke appears much wider than the others. I would love to know if there is drivers that will come or workaround because right now I can't use my laptop profesionnaly. Thanks.

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not
I check the box for auto-repair or run ... Read more

A:Troubleshooting the Network Troubleshooting Utility / After-Sleep Connection Problems

To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
Is anything unclear, please feel free to post back.

My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

System Info:
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Processor Information: Intel64 Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3
Graphics Information: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti
Mobo: Z87I-PRO
System BIOS: 0903
Installed System Memory: 16 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (originally installed on system)
Age of system: 1 year, 1 month
OS Reinstalls: None
This is a desktop PC
System Manufacturer: Purchased from ChillBlast
Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

Attached Files:
* PerfmonReport
* Your app collection dump
* IPDT Processor Test results

Appreciate your support :)

Hello,   I bought the Thinkpad X1 tablet gen 3 in Dec 2018. Since then, I cannot see the red charging light being on when it's fully charged, but when I plug the cord in, the charging light does flicker 3 times, yet it doesnt indicate when fully charging?   Moreover, I have updated everything until now, but the microphone just doesnt record my voice clearly when the laptop is being charged with electricity? I have tried to tune every option in the setting of the microphone, but the Voice Recorder just doesnt record my voice clearly, always with distortion while being charged?   Finally, the battery life lasts maximum about 5 hrs, not as advertised as 9 hrs?   Has anyone had the same issues as mine with the Thinkpad X1 tablet gen 3, please give me your recommendations?   Many thanks

How can i make the internal mic discoverable? / do i need to use some other device like realtek?Thank you!!!Duncan (again, windows 10)

I recently factory reset and installed windows 10 on my P51 and ever since the mute microphone and mute computer keys dont seem to function normally. The mute microphone key (above numpad and F4) does nothing at all, and the mute computer key seems to mute the computer but the on keyboard indicator (led above numpad) does not light up anymore. I tried seeing if it was an audio/ keyboard driver issue but they both say theyre up to date. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
So, my computer uses my built-in microphone instead of my headset's (a Razer Kraken Pro - in case this is helpful information) for sound recording and chatting in games. I have followed recommended procedures throughout the web, but none of them seemed to help me in any way. Can someone assist me?
