PC restart during graphic-intensive tasks. PSU issue? GPU issue? Mobo issue?

Q: PC restart during graphic-intensive tasks. PSU issue? GPU issue? Mobo issue?

Hey, I recently put together a PC and I've been having problems with it since. When I initially built it, the specs were:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
ATI Radeon HD 3870x2 (the card with with 2 GPU's)
500W unbranded PSU
1 added 120m coolermaster fan

Shortly after I started using my PC there was a power surge that knocked the power supply out. I recently got a new power supply. A 650W Silverstone PSU that I thought was more than enough for this. The problem that would occur now is that the computer would restart during games and sometimes while processing/rendering videos in adobe premiere.

When I would enable the 'crossfire' option on my card (to enable both GPU's to work) the computer would no longer just 'restart' the entire screen would hang or the colours would go out of sync shortly after which I'd have to restart the computer. This having happened I assumed the problem was with the graphics card, not the new 650W silverstone I got. I upgraded to a newer card; Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb. The specs are now as follows:

i7 920 2.67GHz
Asus p6t Motherboard
8gb RAM
500gb Sata II HD
Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX460 768mb
650W silverstone PSU
1 added 120m coolermaster fan

After upgrading, games like modern warfare 2 will restart in missions that has a lot of smoke, during a standard windows assessment process the computer will also restart.

There is no overheating issue, the temperatures are normal.
Total power requirement falls well below 650W.
The graphics card is brand new.

So now I'm thinking it is either the PSU that is faulty or the mobo that got screwed during the surge or possibly... given my general luck in things... the new graphics card is faulty but since i was having the exact same problem with the old graphics card that seems unlikely.

Any help would be appreciated, I've been at this for over 2 weeks now with no end. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: PC restart during graphic-intensive tasks. PSU issue? GPU issue? Mobo issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You've got Asus motherboard, hence the first thing I'll look at considering the issues you are having, is at RAM settings/voltage in the board's BIOS, these should be exactly the same as on RAM packaging, but even that doesn't guarantee that it may not be the issue, so basically you'll need to fiddle around a bit with settings/voltage in case default specs doesn't work.

You may also consider stress testing your graphic card using OCCT (including vRam). Regards

Hi, I have an Asus P4P800 mobo with a pentium 4 processor running at 3ghz. I'm using 2GB of RAM with a Gigabyte 256mb GeForce 6800 GT video card.

I have run benchmark tests using PerformanceTest on graphics processing and had 700+ FPS on 2D graphics, 90+FPS on 3D Medium graphics, but was under 10FPS on 3D complex graphics. These tests were run at 800x600. The card itself I know is not faulty because I've tested it in another computer and it performed beautifully.

On any graphic intensive game, basically any HL2 game or mod, battlefield 2, C&C Generals, elder scrolls: oblivion, the games run at a very low FPS. However the graphic abilities of the card can be enabled, (HDR, pixel shading, etc) but even without these graphics enabled the game will still run very sluggish. This problem even occurs sometimes on very non-graphic intensive games, such as flash games.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what the issue is, i've checked all the settings in the bios at least 5 times and they're all correct and all other benchmark testing was great, the only bad result was the complex 3d graphics test. Normal CPU functions run very well, i can alt-tab in and out of programs very quickly and can ran many programs at once, but since this computer is designed for semi-gaming, this fault is very problematic.

We went away on vacation for 2 weeks. I unplugged my computer, but my father-in-law left his in (plugged into a surge protector). We come back from our vacation and his computer won't turn on. I take it downstairs, plug it in and as soon as I plug it in, the light on the motherboard comes on and the fan turns on, but that's it. No post, no running hard drive.

I tested each stick of RAM individually with no results. In order to turn the computer off, I have to unplug it. The power button is orange (should be green unless Dell changed that for some reason), and the hard drive light stays on (though it isn't running). No matter how long I hold the power button, nothing happens.

His computer is a Dell Optiplex GX270, service tag 8R70H31. That's all the info I can give ya.

EDIT:
forgot to mentioned that I checked the mobo for any burn marks and didn't find anything. And everything is plugged in good. Took it all out and plugged it all back in.

A:Power issue? mobo issue?

So far from what i've been able to tell, it appears to be automatically turning on and booting into stand-by mode, and just won't come out of it.

Bonjour ? tous!

First off, thanks so much to all the good folks here at TSF for helping us poor lost souls with our frustrating computer problems.

This one I've had since I bought my computer from NewEgg last year. This is an iBuyPower gamer computer that runs Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor, with 4.00GO of RAM with an nVidia GeForce 9800GT.

For antivirus, I use Avast (I know, I know...) and I am connected via Ethernet to a NetGear router on a Comcast broadband line that sends about 4Mo up and 20Mo down. My Internet connection is stable so that shouldn't be the source of my problems.

I thought (and still think) that the reason why I have issues is that something my be wrong with some of my drivers or with one of (or both) my memory sticks... But it's really hard to tell for me.

Needless to say, I've tried getting help from iBuyPower multiple times, in vain.

So, here I am, Tech Support Witch-Doctors! I am at your mercy! You are our only hope!

But "what is your problem exactly?", you might ask. Well, every time I do things like join a videoconference call, toggle the full-screen mode on YouTube, or view Flash or "non-conventionally encoded" videos streaming, or play videogames... I have a very high chance (50%, I would say) of getting a BSOD. The stop isn't always exactly the same (although I guess some error numbers are often the same.) Sometimes, the computer simply freezes (impossible to even go to the ... Read more

I've had this issue for perhaps 2 weeks or so now, and it only happens while playing an intensive game. What I mean by intensive is basically any game made in the past 2-3 years (perhaps it's ALL games, I only play games made in the 2-3 years). Flash games or indie games with no 3d graphics do not cause the BSOD. I can leave my PC on for days with no BSOD as long as I don't play the games. With games though, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours for the BSOD to occur but seemingly it is inevitable.

I'd tell you guys what errors I've had but they seem to vary quite a bit from the 0x00000124 to the 0x0000101.

Please check the attachment for the required info. including my PC descriptions.

Also, I'd like to preface all this by saying that I'm a complete neophyte, so if you could instruct me as if I was a child, I'd greatly appreciate that. Thanks.

In such a situation, you need to follow Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try.

► At the same, time, you dont have service pack 1 installed.

I'd suggest you to install Service pack 1 and all the updates.

► Though it is a Hardware related crash, these two software has great implication on hardware environment.
Start Menu\Programs\AVG ; replace by Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
Start Menu\Programs\DAEMON Tools Lite; totally uninstall it.

I was working on my buddy's desktop today. He was complaining that the computer would keep shutting off. I used the computer and what happens is the monitor keeps shutting off (losing signal) but the computer stays on. Sometimes the monitor would turn off, come back on again, and the computer would restart itself. I originally thought it was a video card issue, but that wouldn't explain the re-booting. I then tried a known working video card and experienced the same issues. I then thought maybe some of the system files got corrupted, so I figured I would just reformat his computer and reinstall his OS to see if that would fix it. When i tried to reformat (OS is XP Home) windows could not recognize an HDD and basically was telling me there was no HDD installed. I then noticed on startup that i was getting a very quick error message saying:

Serial Device_CH0 Master: WDC WD1600JD-00HBB0
Serial Device_CH1 Master: No Device

Now I know it is either an issue with his motherboard, or his HDD. Weird thing is, the computer does boot into the OS and things can be saved to the HDD, so I can't figure out what is going on with this thing.

He has an ASUS K8V-X motherboard with a Socket 754 Athlon 64 processor. I did run a virus scan and it came back negative. I think there is a hardware issue with his motherboard...am i correct?? Or could it be his HDD?

I have the scheduled task setup to run under a network account that is part of the Administrators group as well as Domain Admins. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to run from scheduled tasks.

If I put in the user that is logged in, it runs.
If I run the script manually, it works.
If I sign into the machine with the network account it works.

Only when I am logged in as a differnt domain user and try running it under this network account(or any other) does it fail.

The network acct has admin rights to the script, share, files, pc. I cant seem to figure it out.

The machine is XP SP3 copying to SBS 2003. Any ideas? Would Group Policy be blocking anything? I have done this dozens of times(not in this environment) and not had any issues. The issue is not limited to this 1 pc either, it is happening on multiple(I cannot say all as I have not made my way around to all of them.)

I have a issue with Outlook 2003 and the tasks. For some strange reason, active tasks notes are getting modified by itself and are missing data. For example: If I have notes in the tasks, sometimes it gets modified and a chunk of it disappears, sometimes in mid word or sentence. Sometimes this happens to one active tasks, but sometimes it also happens to a majority of active tasks (All the date all say it was all modified at the exact same time). Any ideas on why this would be happening?

Your account is a member of the Administrator group, but not "The Administrator". This Administrator account is the built in one and one should NOT even try to use it. When asked just click OK, and then the command will proceed.

Also when you "Right Click" a exe file or icon and you select "Run as Administrator", the Administrator account will be used for that program this one time.

Ok, I've checked a bunch of sites and seen people with similar issues, but none have exactly the same problems I'm having. I have Windows XP and frequently used ZoneAlarm, Spybot, Adaware and Spywareblaster. HJT did not solve this problem for me.

My computer:

if I'm able to log in, safe mode or not, I get a RPC error that says the PC will shut down in 60 seconds 100% of the time

Hello, I really need someones help here!

For the last few weeks I have been attempting to diagnose an issue with my PC! It used to run more or less any game without fail, I could even often play on the highest settings... But recently? Everything seems to either flash, flicker or stretch out the textures!

Here are some videos of the games with their respective issues:

Skyrim: Skyrim choppy/flicker issue - YouTube (Beware: If watched non-sober you may puke!)
Star Wars: Force Unleashed II: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Graphic Issue - YouTube
The Sims 3: The Sims 3 graphical issue - YouTube

As you can see, they all have their own issues... I decided to try some old games and the first two I tried were GTA Vice City and San Andreas.

Vice City was very normal, and not much to mention, but San Andreas had the same issue as the Sims 3 and Skyrim just to a lesser extent!

Here is San Andreas: GTA San Andreas slight flicker? - YouTube

After it first happened I assumed it was that the graphics card had needed a driver update, so I done that and restarted the game... and it had the same issue! Tried pretty much everything to fix it up to the point where I gave up and done a full destructive restore to factory settings, after hours of screwing around doing that I put in a game and... exactly same as it was before the restore!

Finally, I was talking to a friend of mine about the issue, and he is very into PC's and even builds and repairs them on his spare time, he lives t... Read more

The one oddity is when this issue occurs and I go into the nvidiadrivers setting the mouse pointer seems to blink frequently when I go over theblue setting selections that are in their driver settings software. I have notnoticed other problems in any other software (COD works fine). Hello TSG.

First off, I think I should start by saying my PC specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2, .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Sempron, 2600+, 1.6GB GHZ
RAM: 512mb + 1GB tablet
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x550, 256MB (I know, old)
Hard Drives: C: Total - 30GB, Free - 8GB; D: Total - 45GB, Free - 44GB;
I've been having some trouble since last friday.

I thought of adding all what I did, but it'd be long and unnecesesary. I'll just post what I did after formating.
I was getting some blue screens saying that ati2dvag.dll was stanked on a infinite loop. After a lot of unsuccessful fixes, I formatted my Hard Drives (which explains why I have so much free space).

Now after I installed the ATI latest driver, my computer keeps crashing. It doesn't crash on secure mode though. I don't see any blue screen now though, the computer just freezes, screen goes black for a second, and when the image comes back, the graphic card is not working right anymore (I know this because the image refreshes much slower). Or it just freezes permanently.

The ATI Radeon x1650PRO does not have a high power requirement so it is unlikely to be related the PSU. There are two possible problems,

the first to look at is did you install the card correctly?

the second is, do you have the correct drivers for the card. ie 64bit

I would like to share with you that AcousticTools is a powerful suite of software tools for detailed analysis of audio data stored in standard Windows wave files. Please check the specification of this software. However, I would suggest you to please install the latest java update, also install latest version of the graphics driver from the below mentioned web link.http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/default.page?  After that, please uninstall and reinstall the AcousticTools sofware and check if the issue resolved.

Hi,

Does anyone know what is going wrong with my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (see screenshot).

It is a new install and the issue appear on several windows and program installations.

Thanks

A:Windows 7 Graphic Issue.

I'd check the installation disk for errors or corrupted data. don't know off the top of my head how to check though.

After that, reinstall your graphics drivers?

I doubt it's a font problem, as the window itself is corrupted.

Hello TSF.

First off, I think I should start by saying my PC specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1, .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Sempron, 2600+, 1.6GB GHZ
RAM: 512mb + 1GB tablet
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x550, 256MB (I know, old)
Hard Drives: C: Total - 30GB, Free - 8GB; D: Total - 45GB MB, Free - 44GB;

I tried older display drivers, like 8.1 and 9.1, HECK, even 5.2. None of them made a difference.

I'm so tired... I've spent hours and hours on this... I also lost everything I had when I formatted...

Please, help me...

Welcome to TSF.

Sorry, but I have to ask this . . . . Why are you still running WinXP SP1 (or even SP2 as it indicates under your username)?? If this PC is connected to the internet, you subjecting it to a lot of vulnerabilities. You really should install SP3.

You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en

Both the download and the install will take a chunk of time, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Also, I'd strongly suggest leaving your PC running overnight for a couple of nights so that it picks up all of the updates released since SP3.

Anyother suggestion: Exhaust all least destructive troubleshooting methods before doing something such as formatting your HDD. Although that is occasionally necessary, it should be a last resort.

It could very well be that the graphic card is going bad. The only way to tell for sure would be to install it in another PC and see if you have the same problems. You can get a similar card on eBay pretty cheap or you can upgrade.

Since you've gone as far as formatting your HDD, reinstalling the OS, drivers, etc., I'd say that you have pretty well knocked out any chance of it being a software issue.

It is possible you typed the address incorrectly, or the page may no longer exist. You may wish to try another entry or choose from the links below, which we hope will help you find what you’re looking for.' Anyway, this is what i have to download. KB940105

Hello. Recently I bought Gigabyte HD 4650 1gb agp 8x card. I unistalled drivers for my old card, removed the old card, put this new card, and plugged in everything. I turned on my pc, installed drivers and directx from cd, and restarted. But i then i noticed some problems.
First, Aero looks weird(picture: http://oi56.tinypic.com/2qu87xz.jpg), so i turned it off. Second, in game scenes and game itself works perfectly, but intros, and other prerendered scenes are really slow and laggy(1 fps!).
Third, when i start playing some game, it lags a bit but after a few seconds it stops and works perfect.
Fourth, some games don't show graphics correctly. Examples:
Assassins creed 2(first scene): http://i51.tinypic.com/16c9kzp.png
NFS Carbon(if i set visual treatment on high, otherwise it works normally): http://i53.tinypic.com/21e5kb7.pn
Also, I noticed that Catalyst Control Center doesn't show SmartGart and VPU recover tab, and I think they should be there.
I installed new drivers, installed newer version of directx, didn't helped. I removed drivers, same thing, i played with some options in Catalyst and ingame options, nothing. I changed some compatibilty stuff in windows, same thing. Please help, I really don't understand why it doesn't works properly. I meet all the requirements for this card, and this problems really frustrates me. Thanks in advance

Hi, welcome to the forums

Firstly, when you say "new drivers" are you referring to the one's provided on the install CD/DVD? If not then download the latest and see if that helps.

Secondly, for uninstalling drivers I'd recommend using Driver Sweeper to completely eradicate any trace of the previous driver and see if that helps.

I'm really confussed about this issue, but I'll explain whats happened and if anyone has any tips please pass them on.

I have a machine by Tiny.com, running win 98se, 500mhz celeron, intel on baord graphics and audio.

I purchased a prophet 3d 4000xt 64mb pci graphics card and followed installation procedure and install card success fully and have been using it with no problems.

3 weeks ago I got given a 700mhz P3 prosessor and replaced it with my tied celeron, and the machine works a dream (considering it's spec!!) again no issues.

I then decided to upgrade my OS to Win XP (Pro). I booted Win98 and started to upgrade, everything started fine until the computer had to rest.

After searching for the MBR the cumputer would 'Hang' on a black screen with a white flashing cusor in the top left corner.

It took me ages to figure out that it was my graphics card that was the problem and after uninstalling it the system booted with no probs and completed the upgrade.

So no I start the install process of card and the same black screen on start up appears.

I've downloaded up to date drivers for XP from Hurcules website but nothing seems to be working.

HELP!!

Is the graphics card a Sapphire ATI radeon x550 if so did you go to the Sapphire site to get the drivers? Or did you get those drivers from AMD/ATI site? If you went to AMD/ATI then you will have different drivers as Sapphire have their own drivers for their graphics card

try booting into safe mode
start the PC and keep tapping F8 a menu should appear - choose safe mode
if that opens ok
a couple of things to try
1) Do a system restore to before it went into hibination & turned off
start>
programs>
accessories>
system tools>
system restore?
choose a date before problem
2) update the graphics / video driver - whats the make and model of PC - what version of windows are you running - the driver should be available on the PC manufacturers website - support section

Sounds like somethin's shortin. If you installed a new mobo recently, you may have put a riser in the wrong place. I hope you didnt force the CPU into the socket. That will wreck it. If it wont go it, turn it around till it goes in. You really need to provide us with more infirmation of what you dod. Did you move the risers when you installed the new mobo at all?

Hey all,

Im hoping to get your opinions on a problem I have been having with my latest build. The computer is running 4GB of ram on Windows Server Enterprise 2003 SP2 R2.

With all 4 GB of ram installed, the processor never idles... It is always above 20% and usually is in the 50-100% range... For a few days I thought this was a windows issue as the issue only started occuring after I installed SP1 and continuing after SP2 and R2 (its a new build starting from W2K3 Ent so SP1, 2 and R2 were installed after the OS as updates)

After applying all Windows Updates and still having this issue I started to inspect my hardware... Running DFT, Memtest and MOBO Test... All Passed no issues found...

Annoyed and out of ideas I opted to run Memtest again to see if the memory was failed in some way... this time instead of turning it on and walking away, i sat and watched it (about as interesting as watching paint peel but it gave me the best clue)...

Memtest loaded up and started running...I noticed a disturbing pattern in the first 3 tests... The test would start and run very quickly... then it would hit 50-70% complete and it would slow down... that last 30-50% of each would take 20 minutes or more to complete as where the first 50-70% would take maybe 5 minutes to run...

I decided to test the memory by pulling the 2-3gb chip and 3-4gb chip (dual Channel socket pair 2 = sockets 2 and 4) and re-ran memtest... shot through the first 3 tests in about 15-20 minutes...

Booted into win... Read more

Hi Guys and Gals!

So let me lay everything out on the line here for you all. I have a computer that does not post. It worked one morning before I went to work, and when I came home, the system was frozen and I could not get it to work, so I restarted it and thus we are at this issue.

I have tried everything I can think of for this problem and nothing is working. I have been doing everything I can, over a total of 6 months (you may be able to see why I'm rather frustrated now).

I have bench tested this board, cpu and ram. Fail
I have removed ram and tested board an cpu. Fail
Replaced Ram. Fail.
Sent in processor for RMA. Received back, no issues from AMD. Fail.
Sent in motherboard to ASUS, received a replacement. Fail.
Replaced PSU, Fail
Works with an AMD x2 5000+BE

The CPU is an AMD Athlon x4 Phenom 9850+ BE.
The Ram is a 4GB Kit of G.Skill Pi Series.

Supposedly, all parts I have are good and working, but do not work together.
I am at the point that I will never buy an ASUS board again, but do however want to get this working. It is not a CPU problem as that was tested at AMD. It is not a board issue, as that was replaced. It is not a RAM issue as that was replaced. It is not a PSU issue as that was replaced. The only thing that points a finger is that it works with a 5000+. I have upgraded BIOS to version 1502, but I cannot get it to work with the 9850+

Is there anybody out there that can help me fix this problem before I decide to start from... Read more

Hi gang You guys seem to know a lot about these things so I hope someone answers!
I had a hard disk fail on me (primary hdd error) and i connected it to my other working computer to see if there was life in it. I was able to read files on the HDD and stuff but it turned out later that it was defect anyway and that I couldn't reinstall windows on it or install much or anything. Was impossible.

Anyway the day after i disconnected that HDD the computer froze on the desktop screen completely and i resetted computer only to find cmos checksum error and floppy disk error message (which would mean failure to read my old HDDs i guess rather than a floppy disk). Actually before that the monitor would often give me "no signal" error or something of that sort when i would start up, and the frequency of that happening has been getting higher and higher until now it won't even show anything, ever.

The times it did get signal there were those checksum error messages on startup. Pressing F1 to continue resulted in a blue screen and an auto restart. So i went into bios settings and changed things but to my surprise the settings did not save any more no matter what.

So did the hard disk somehow destroy my motherboard? And will it do the same to any other computer I connect it to? Fixed up the original pc by getting a completely new hard disk and installing everything from scratch, but I'm afraid of connecting this "broken" one to the computer to... Read more
