Preferred Solution: Computer Freezing; Slowing Down. But mostly freezing. I have my HiJackThis! Log File.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Computer Freezing; Slowing Down. But mostly freezing. I have my HiJackThis! Log File.

I don't see anything in your log or your description of your problem to come to the conclusion that your problem is malware related. When there is malware present there will always be other internet related symptoms like popups or a browser hijack etc...

I will advise you to uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware as the version you have is very old and no longer supported. It in now called Windows Defender.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Go through this now and see if it helps:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

You can look up the startups at the following links to help determine what is needed and what is not:

Hi Bleeping Computer,

Recently my computer has been freezing and slowing down a lot when I use it. At first I thought it was a driver issue since my computer only freezes whenever I am watching a video or listening to music, I think I installed the right driver but my computer is still freezing ( a strange side effect from the freezing is if there is any audio, it will slow down and start to stretch out). After a few minutes it will revert back to normal like nothing happened.

Also my computer isn't running smoothly anymore, many times when I type, the words jump to completion. When I scroll, it jumps and doesn't smoothly scroll down the page. I tried everything from defragging to updating every driver and program possible and still the problems persist.

I was hoping someone would be able to advise me on what I should do.

Thank you,

Frost

Hi, my computer suddenly one day became dramatically slower with than usual and started to randomly freeze, upon which I am forced to restart. The main problem, however, is the freezing. I am unsure as to whether this is malware or virus related, but it would appear to me to be so as these symptoms began occurring after I was infected with Antivirus Agent Pro, which I think I got rid of successfully.
Thank you in advance, I appreciate any help that I can receive.

In the last few days if not a week, I have noticed a lack of speed on my computer. We did have the netsky virus but have removed this. I have run adaware (changing it to the thorough scan) which found 80 items which have been quarantined and removed. I have used hijack this (pasted below). the only two items I am not sure about are the brightstreet and the smiley central. I am pretty sure my daughter uses smiley central on msn.
I cant see anything obvious but perhaps you could have a look - it might just have been a pre-warning of netsky!!
Thanks

Hi
I'm a user of this site, but have not been back for awhile because the team here usually sort me out quick. I've noticed that my computer is slowing down a lot. I've used up a fair amount of disk space and know this will cause the comp to slow down, but now my 20mb broadband seems to be running at dial up speeds at times and now if I connect my mobile device to the computer and disconnect the whole thing freezes up. I've contacted my ISP to c heck if it was their service or the anti-virus program they provided which may be causing me problems with certain programs (battlefield 2142 and TVUplayer), but they don't know what the problem with their software (pcguard) is and now my computer is acting as it was when it was infected. Can you help?

I know, vague title. I guess I should give some background information. Okay, so this is a laptop I purchased from my friend (It's a Toshiba Satellite P505D). It originally had Windows Vista on it and my friend had all sorts of problems with this laptop, mainly because Windows Update kept freezing on her and messed things up. She would constantly just turn it off by holding the power button, which is bad.

Anyway, I got it, and just disabled the updates, thus solving that problem. So, eventually I get Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed on here. Everything seems to be running fine for a while. Well, just a few days ago the computer made a horrible repeating beeping sound. I didn't think that was a good sign, but it turned on just fine after it did that. It hasn't made the beeping noise since that one time.

However, I have reason to believe the beeping was warning me about something, because now I'm having problems with this laptop. Everything will be working fine, but then if I let the computer sit for a while without touching it (usually about an hour) the whole computer just flakes out! All my programs run extremely slow and become unresponsive (usually I only have firefox and the chat program Pidgin up). So, then I will try to shut down the computer after everything becomes completely unresponsive. Sometimes it will let me shut down the computer, but it's taken 10 -20 MINUTES to shut it down each time this happens. When it doesn't let me shut it... Read more

Uhh, My computer got a virus, and what happens is: Once I log onto my account, it begins to slow down, then maybe 1 or 2 min later it "kinda" freezes. I can move my mouse, click on things sure, but nothing happens. It's as if my computer was running a looping command in the background.

Also, after I try a few times to get onto my computer through reseting over and over, it begins to freeze similarly once I log on.

Anyway... I have a program to kill the virus, but I cannot run the anti-virus because the scan can't complete before my computer freezes.

So does anyone have any ideas about how I could run a virus scan =/
I tried to do it in safe mode, but it just said "error opening, too many archives embedded"

For the last 3 days, my computer has been freezing intermittently (at least 15 times now). I have had this computer for 9 months and have had no previous issues.

My use has not been strenuous in any way - OneNote, Adobe Digital Editions, a few tabs on Chrome and in some cases, Spotify. I'm running an i5-4690 and 8GB of RAM.

There is no warning before the computer freezes - no slowing down or anything. It will simply freeze and I will be forced to shut it down via the power button. No BSOD or any acknowledgement of something having gone wrong.

So far, I have restored the system from a point created a week ago - still experiencing freezing. Ran sfc/ scannow in command prompt but I have had freezing since.

Advice would be greatly appreciated, because I do not know where to start in pinpointing the issue.

Here is a Speccy screenshot if it helps: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/btKfodE1lxeRIexeUoE0hpZ

Your Speccy link does not work.  I'm posting instructions for creating the Speccy link below.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

==========

Please do this as well.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

I recently built my first PC three days ago...
Specs:
i7 bloomfield 960 processor
4x4 vengeance ram
crosair hx850 PSU
evga x58 ftw3 mobo
hd 6870 radeon graphics xfx

When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both... (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.

any advice would be appreciated if not I will bring to a repair shop and have them sort it out.

A:Newly built computer random freezing and freezing on starting windows

Hello Skytri and welcome to Seven Forums. My usual disclaimer: I'm not at expert at anything.

I'm wondering if there isn't a RAM problem. Perhaps one of the sticks wasn't seated properly, etc. You could open Resource Monitor > Memory tab and make sure all RAM is being recognized. Make sure Installed = 16384MB and the Available + Cached + Hardware Reserved is the same amount. (You are using 16GB total, correct?)

Resource Monitor

If Memtest freezes you could try a quick check for a bad RAM module. Install one stick in Slot # 1 (or whichever slot the mobo manual says to use.) Run the computer to test for freezes. Test each of the remaining sticks one at a time. If all 4 sticks work you might want to go through these troubleshooting guides. They are time consuming but many people have been able to isolate their computer problems.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

A:Random Computer Freezing - Need to hard restart after freezing No BSOD

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

So around a month ago i was trying to download an audiobook torrent for the book 'the road'. i clicked the torrent (i wasn't on pirate bay) anyway my computer went nuts from there, for the last month my computer has been extremely slow. I have since downloaded Malwarebytes, HyjackThis, and McAfee. Their is one Trojan that Malwarebytes has been unable to delete, even upon restart. I have also run pandasoft scans, however my computer freezes generally 30-45 min after being turned on. So i haven't gotten the results from that in a few weeks...but when i ran it last night it was saying at 13% of completion it had found 16 suspicious things.

I just completed another Malwarebytes scan, and i will paste it on below my HyjackThis log. Thank you VERY much, if you can figure out what i should do i would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks so much!!

My computer has been very slow and occasionally freezing up the past few days. It has never donme this before. I am running windows 2000. I have webroot spysweeper (purchased at office depot), zone alarm firewall, and symantec anti-virus. I've also downloaded bazooka and spy hunter free anti-spyware. none of the anti-spyware programs shows anything except: spy hunter shows "seekseek" in a certain registry location, but will not remove it without my buying the full software. I looked around and found instructions for removing seekseek myself, and based on that it looks like I don't have it: the files I am supposed to remove are not on my computer, either in the places they say they should be, or, based on a search, at all; and the registry entries I am supposed to change aren't there either. Is this a scam to get me to buy the software, or is the seekseek program sometimes in different places and in different forms than what I read?

of course, i get a dozen or more e-mails every day with virus attachments on them. I never open them, and often get the notification windows asking me what to do. I always choose to delete the attachment, then i delete the e-mail altogether and then empty the deleted items folder.

I particpate in several list serves, and sometimes open attachments, but of course not if there's been a warning the attachment is infected.

My computer has been doing strange things lately:

First it kept restarting itself and running scandisk microsoft said the problem was related to AOL. I have since reinstalled the AOL software and that problems seems to be better, but not sure if it just hasn't happened again.

Next, my computer has crashed several other times this week and online crash analysis from microsoft have told me several things. One was related to a Memories disc AFS/AFS2k driver, which I have no idea about, but installed some download it recommended to fix it--hopefully I will not recieve that error again.

Now my computer keeps freezing, to the point where I have to hold the button in and turn it off to get the computer working again at all. When I turn the computer back on, it of course runs scandisk, I got some other crash anaylsis yesterday about some driver, but of course before I could fix the problem or save the response, my computer froze again. This has happened like three more times since, but this time with no error logs from microsoft, the computer just starts back up.

I ran spybot, adaware, and a Mcaffe Virus scan all came up clean.
So I thought if no one has any other suggestions why my computer is doing this to me I would post a hijack this log and see what someone more knowlegable might find.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

My laptop has been freezing a lot lately. All programs freeze up, I get "Computer Not Responding" when I ctrl, alt, delete. Once I close the extra programs I don't need to run, I will try to open Internet Explorer or Yahoo Messenger but nothing happens. When I attempt to restart the computer, it will shutdown to the "Sony Vaio" screen saver and then sit there until I manually turn off the power switch. Also, usually after about an hour or so, I'll get the so called "Blue screen of death" and am forced to restart my computer.

I'm not really sure what the problem is and obviously it's stemming further than this, but here's a HijackThis log for good measure:

Hi! My computer is very slow booting up and has drastically slowed down (or freezes) navigating between files/programs, opening and closing programs, etc.... I recently re-installed Microsoft Office 2007 and shortly before that had to re-install Java as well. Java Applets were not loading and running. Last time I had both of these programs installed, both seemed to cause the same problem- slowed common functions down (issues mentioned above) or froze. So, I decided to run HijackThis to see if the problem could be found. Any help you can give it appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!!

Hello, I'm having an issue with my computer.

My computer has started to restart/freeze up on me. The thing is, it has graphical issues once it freezes/tries to reboot. I get all these lines through the screen, graphical glitches when trying to go through the BIOS, etc. The computer isn't too slow, it isn't acting strange, the only thing that is wrong is the obvious freezing/restarting with graphical lines and glitches once it freezes.

My video card has been going out for a long time(I share a computer with a few people and they seem to think the video card is ok, but I have always seen small glitches in graphics here and there), so I am thinking maybe this might be a problem, given the graphical glitches, the horizontal lines going through the screen once it freezes.

When it hits the BIOS, it sometimes shows these same lines with the screen going mostly black.

System specs are:

CPU - Core 2 Duo, speed I don't remember.

Video Card - Geforce 7900 GT 512mb

Ram - 2GB DDR2

Motherboard - Asus, P5N-E SLI

I got this computer a few years back and I am not one to keep updated with specs or talk about them often, so I have forgotten the speed of the CPU and I do not know if I am missing information for you guys.

Solutions I have tried:

Overheating - I used air to filter out all dust/dirt that might be there to harm the computer, I have plenty of fans in there, etc.

Any and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:Solved: Computer Freezing/freezing/graphical glitchs

If you're getting graphical 'glitches' while in bios, that's usually a good sign that your graphics card is having issues - however, I have seen this happen with faulty ram. I'd recommend reseating the cards (ensure your computer is off and unplugged whilst doing so) and see if that helps

I am having some problems with my WIndows 7 system whose cause I can't identify.

The first is that my system freezes up to the point of becoming unresponsive and unusable during times of hard disk access. I have multiple drives and this seems to be the case, regardless of the drive being accessed. If I am doing something like opening a Chrome browser session with many tabs or unzipping an archive, I simply can't use my computer at all and have to walk away for several minutes. Same thing happens if I run a spyware detector like anti-malwarebytes. Sometimes the disk seems to be engaging in furious activity and I can't pin it down to anything specific, even looking in the process viewer.

The other problem is that my system sometimes slows down to the point that it becomes unusable. It takes forever to do simple things like switch between windows. The most noticeable times when this happens is after I've left the computer idle for a few hours or overnight. The system becomes so slow that I will need to restart it. I have all power settings turned off so I know it is not related to hard drive shut down, sleep, hibernation, etc.

These are the things I have done so far:

run the sfc scan. - no problem found
run memtest - no problem found
run diagnostics on all my hard drives - no problem found

At this point I am not sure what to do. Do I need to start replacing hardware components despite the fact I can't find a fault with any of them?

Hello there!

I bought my new laptop in december 2009 and all that time it has been freezing and slowing down all of a sudden. I have looked at the temperatures of my cpu and gpu, and they have all been 80-85 celsius. I have cleaned the fan vents by vacuum cleaning the surface and pumped the dust out of the fan, the temperatures haven't gone down so much. They still are at around 75-80 celsius.

So right now, I have to clean them every day, and the pc still does that. I find it really strange. Anyone know the reason for that?

My pc details:
Acer aspire 8530g
AMD Turion rm-75 @ 2,2 ghz
4gb ram (shared with gpu)
500gb hdd (5400 rpm)
ATI mobility radeon hd4650
Windows 7 Home premium 32-bit
I use Avast-antivirus, no 3rd party firewalls installed

Thanks in advance :)

A:Windows 7 pc freezing and slowing down

heya m8 welcome to the forum

those temperatures are high and it would be interesting to see how hard the cpu is working ?

how many processes do you have running at boot ?

what version graphics driver are you currently using ?

have you tried placing a house fan blowing directly on the laptop to cool it, just as a temporary measure to see if this changes anything ?

can you plz download and run CPU-Z and post screenshots of the CPU tab and the output from the CPUID monitor, As an idea I think it might be worth undervolting the CPU to lower the heat generated ?

are you confident you have all the latest drivers including bios ?

Well, I recently bought a Compaq tower with the standard stuff installed.

Compaq 5430US
Pentium 4 CPU 1.8GHz
1 GB of DDR Ram (2 512 sticks)
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 w/ AGP8X Graphics Card

Everything runs great except that it keeps bogging down when I run more then one program. It does this when I run my music player and my internet explorer, or when I'm writting something to the harddrive or a cd. I've tried everything I possible could to try and fix it. I've bought new RAM, had several diagnostics run on the motherboard and cpu, checked the video card. I even went as far as to do a complete factory restore to see if that fixes it. Nothing seems to work.
The computer when it first starts runs fine, then it does this choppy freezing that seems to affect the entire comp. It doesn't seem to be thinking when this happens, more like taking a quick nap before it continues on. It'll do this everytime I go to do something. I can't even have a screensaver run because it freezes up for a few minutes.
I'm really lost as to what to do. Any ideas?

System specs:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.7GHz (With SSE2 and Application Accelerator)
640 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 (with AGP 4X bus and 64 MB Memory)
DirectX 9.0c
Previous attempts to fix problem:
Full System Sweep via Virus Scans and Removals (with F-Prot(DOS) and AntiVir(Windows and up-to-date definitions)
Spyware/Adware/Trojan scan with Spy Sweeper for MSN 9
Increasing Virtual Memory Paging File size
Downloading latest drivers
System Restore
Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmentor (Defragmentor ran at least once every three days)
Problem:
Slowing and freezing of games
Symptoms:
Non-delayed startup. Approx. 15 seconds into gameplay, systems begins slowing. Slows more and more for about 4 seconds, then completely freezes for about 3 more seconds. The game then jumps ahead to where it would be if it did not slow and freeze in the first place. Approx. 10 seconds later, process repeats itself. Continuously repeats until game is closed.
The main trouble with this is that when it freezes, dial-up internet connection stops sending and receiving data for about 6 seconds, so with online games (EverQuest), approx. 4 seconds of gameplay is uninterrupted every 17 seconds.
Games effected:
All graphically-powered games (Does not include card games, 3D Pinball, or Interent Board Games) Effects some Flash and Java games.

Problem has occured before on this computer, but can not remember how I fixed it.

Well I don't know if your video card is capable of handling Doom3. Since you say it's only the games (and I assume the 'highly powered' games are HL2 and the like) I would look at the video card.

Hi there wycats

Thank you for your patience. I will be helping you deal with the issues raised in your log from this point onwards

Before we start jumping into things, here is a quick basic note which I mention to everyone. The fix which I have provided for you is for this computer only, it should not be used on any other computer. Each fix is tailor made for the specific task in hand. If for some reason you have system restore disabled, then please re-enable it before proceeding, an infected restore is better than none. Please read through the fix first and set enough time aside to complete the task in one session. If there is anything you feel needs clarification then please ask - do not guess! Please copy and paste any requested logs into replies rather than add as attachments, this makes it easier for analysis.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription

If this is a computer from a work place then please advise your IT department of the concerning issues before commencing past this point.

Please follow these directions in the order they are set out for you.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download lin... Read more

I began experiencing an odd problem tonight. As I am using my computer, it will periodically and suddenly freeze the application I am working in for several seconds (it says the application is not responding) only to have the application catch back up and work perfectly for about 20 minutes, at which point, it will freeze up again. It has happened with my internet browser (Firefox 3.6.12), RealPlayer (while watching media) and utorrent.

The harddrive begins reading very intensely (you can hear it spinning hard) and the light on the front that shows the disk is working is lit solidly. However, I kept the Task Manager up when it happened once and it was only showing about 12% CPU with nothing spiking high at all.

I am confounded as to what the problem is, but if any one has heard of something like this and fixed it, please let me know.

I am running Windows Vista Home Basic x32 (SP1) on a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop. 2.00 GHz Intel processor and 2 GB of ram.

Please let me know!
