Interesting connectivity issue, just a browser issue

Q: Interesting connectivity issue, just a browser issue

Opps, maybe not so unique since I just noticed an ENTIRE forum for browsers...perhaps moving this is appropriate...if so, please do. I will be reading up in there.

Its interesting because I can't find any mention of it anywhere on this site. Specifically browser connectivity is lost after a little while (guessing 7 minutes, though it may be a number of browser pages displayed trigger i went 3 hrs today) after I start browsing. If I don't start a browser, the death clock doesn't begin until I start browsing. Now, at the same time, all shares, the other machines on the network, work fine. Also if I am playing an online game, I will not have any issues. Just IE and firefox can't display pages and other programs (like updates of AVG) are soon to follow.

***Important to note this is new, the network was fine for over a week before this started a couple days ago.

I notice, when it works, net info states Homegroup - ready to connect (I am using a workgroup to connect to other machines) but last night, during a browser outage it said it was connected. I notice now it calls my workgroup a homegroup (I think is used to say workgroup)

(This problem may have started around when I tried to synchronise a folder to "always available offline", but there are other things that were done in that period of time unfortuately, all have since been undone.

System...Win7 7100 all updated.

Browsers IE8 and Firefox are effected (updated)

Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)

Router Linksys Wireless 54GS running v2.04.4 - HyperWRT v1.3, Aug. 11, 2004 which works fine on all other machines even while this Win7 machine can't connect. I can connect to Mapped drives, computers and devices on the network but no browser activity and Win see no problems.

What I have done.

Tried disconnecting and connectig to local network in applet
Disable IPv6

Remove AVG antivirus

Remove Hardwaremonitor Pro (I was connecting to another machine to watch temps etc remotely and had to open a port which is still opened now that I remember it)

While it is fubared I have tried disable/enable the adapter (won't work)

Downloaded MSnetmonitor 3.3 but that is all Greek to me, maybe someone can guide me what to look for (I do see some "unknown" connections, but they seem normal, like netbios, and masterbrowser traffic, but that is just my guess so far)

Removed OPENdns as DNS server info I notice the router has since found the new ones again though the machine seems to have other ones in its settings. The other machines (XP home and Pro) are still set to openDNS and work fine BTW.

power management is not enabled for adapter.

I will edit more as I can remember what I did already.

A few things...something called "flow control" in the adapter applet is disabled. Any bearing on the symptoms?

Anything I can post from netmonitor to help you wizards?

Just saw this post, which is very similar Firefox Troubles

I am trying IE64 bit to see if it is immune to this. EDIT: I just noticed I can change "Home Network" to "Work". I will see if this helps, and it might since this is the way it was for weeks.

Preferred Solution: Interesting connectivity issue, just a browser issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We have a web appliance that we access through browser. The appliance is MailCleaner. I was able to access this on Monday. Tuesday this device was down. We got it back up and working. The device is working but I have been unable to access this via my web browser. I get incorrect login or password. But that is the log in, because it works on another computer, via a browser with the same login, etc. I cleared out my cache on my browser, rebooted, ran my malware and virus scanner... rebooted.. still can't get on. This has happened before and oddly it went away when I switched computer. But I can't exactly switch computers every other week. What other things should I be looking at to fix this particular log in issue? I have already tried different browsers on my computer, same results.

I'd love some feed back or ideas of how else I can troubleshoot this without replacing my computer frequently. It doesn't make any sense at all! Thanks for any insight.

So this has been frustrating me for days. Recently moved to new apartment and got comcast cable cause it's the only isp that provides for this complex. Since then all of my internet browsers have been running extremely slow and with some sites not at all. For example, I have never been able to go to penny-arcade.com since I moved... it just doesn't load. Other pages load halfway but some work just fine. I did all the usual internet option setting changes (enabling cookies, deleting internet files, restoring all defaults, etc) but that didn't help. I'm pretty sure it's not my router because I took my computer over to a reliable connection that I know works and the same stuff happened. Did a defrag, scan disk, system restore, got spyware doctor, and McAfee anti-virus but nothing helps.. I checked my mobo's site and they don't have any drivers that relate to anything like this. Also... my aol instant messanger works fine when I have no browsers open, but when I open any browser (IE, Mozilla, Opera) it disconnects and reconnects so much that messaging doesn't work at all. Called comcast a few times and they don't know... Any ideas that don't involve reinstalling XP(last resort) would be appreciated. (Two more peices of info: online games work fine... never any loss of connection. This is just a browser issue. Anddd.. I can't access my router (Arris TM402P/110) through my IP cause that page also doesn't load)... Read more

A:Browser trouble. Connectivity issue?

I get the feeling its probably a DNS issue.

You can try setting your DNS servers manually.
I often use Verizon's core DNS servers myself, here are the IPs

The best way to check for a dns issue, is to open a command window (Start menu -> Run -> cmd <enter>)
Then try pinging a domain name.
ping www.penny-arcade.com

If you get a message saying unknown host, then your DNS isn't working properly or you typed the domain name wrong.

If you get an IP address and replies, then your DNS is fine.

Okay guys, I'm trying to wrap my head around this one, but it just doesn't jive.
18 Workstation Environment with 98, 2000 and one XP station.

Windows 2000 Advanced server as the PDC.

Router as the gateway.

Basically what happens is in some instances, you can no longer ping the server, however you can browse the server and access its public folders etc which means the Netbeui is working, however the TCP/IP is failing. This error happens randomly, and this is what i've done so far.

Changed network card on server and one of the workstations. (The test station)
Replaced cables.
Plugged into another jack.
Replaced the hub with a switch.
pointed the workstation's WINS and DNS to the server.

Now I have no problems browsing the server, however we're using the main server as an SQL server as well, thus it's adament we use TCP/IP

I'm running out of ideas, however I'm wondering if it has to do with the servers DNS settings some how, regardless any input would be helpful.

Hello all,

I have returned yet again with another interesting issue.

The Problem:

A humming mic ...

a) this only happens when the mic is enabled
b) this sound will go away if I touch any metal part of my case

Yes, I have figured it is a grounding issue, but I am unsure of exactly WHAT is causing this issue, since before I rebuilt my machine ... I did not have this problem.

I have both onboard sound and a proper soundcard (although I have onboard disabled).

I have tried both cards, as well as multiple headsets (although I have yet to try a USB one).

I have the mic in "playback" muted and the one in "recording" enabled.

I have tinkered with every setting I know to adjust to figure out the issue, but as I can touch the case and magically make the humming go away, I am convinced it's hardware specific.

I have tried reseating the motherboard, the cards, etc ... still doing it.

So, I have 1 of two options:

a) I find a way to ground my case, so I don't have to constantly be holding onto it so that I can use my mic

b) figure out exactly what the grounding issue is and fix it.

Ideas? Suggestions? Answers?

Thanks in advance,

I'm having a problem where when I open a new tab or a new browser window all together, sometimes it will load my homepage up. Other times it won't load anything, It will just say connecting forever and ever. I've noticed TONS of people having this issue when trying to open a new LINK in a new tab or page (which isnt my main issue, although that's also annoying) See, im having the issue when just opening a plain page. Why does it seem like no one ever has the problems I have? So annoying.

Anyways ive included a video link to a screen capture ive done of what my problem is. For those who don't understand what im talking about, as that seems to be pretty common since i can never explain clearly what my issue is. Here:

Simply try to delete temporary files

Steps to delete temporary files :

From the Internet Explorer 7 command bar, choose Tools and then Delete Browsing History....
In the Delete Browsing History window that appears, click on the Delete files... button, which should be the first button you see.
In the Delete Files window that is displayed, you are presented with the question Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files?
Click on Yes to confirm .
The Delete Browsing History window may appear, showing you the progress of the deletion. When this window disappears, all of the files saved (cached) from your Internet browsing activities will have been removed.

Hi to all on the forum, this is my first post.

I hope someone can help me with what I believe to be a DNS issue with a Windows 2k3 Small Business Server.

The symptoms are that my clients (all Win XP SP2) are able to access some but not all websites. e.g. I can access google, yahoo, etc, practically any website except for:

1. microsoft.com
2. ebay.co.uk

I am however able to access all of these sites directly from the server?

The address of the DNS is set in the DHCP so the clients are getting the same DNS as the server, but even if I set the DNS addresses manually on the clients I get the same "Page cannot be displayed" error.

I have an SDSL connection which is protected via a Cisco Pix firewall. There is only one network card in the server therefore I do not suspect a routing issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Okay, so some time ago my computer would suddenly shut down on me. Whenever it wanted. Could be at boot up. Could be a few minutes on the desktop, a couple of hours in a game, a few seconds using MSN.

I find this NEVER happens in Safemode. And, I am not sure what the deal is. It only started happening recently. I can't even begin to describe what I think it might be. So, I formatted. And it KEPT happening. I re-installed all proper drivers for every device as is followed

cannot initialize CPU DLL -Amd Athlon 64 3500+
cannot initialize CPU DLL -Corsair XMS 1GB 2x
cannot initialize CPU DLL -Asus A8V-Deluxe

cannot initialize CPU DLL 2 Maxtor Diamond HDDS.

I get the feeling something funny is going on with my soundcard drivers. I had to use the ones off the original disc it came with, (I am using an X-Fi Platinum), and that worked. Cause any new drivers I tried to use would not work, and I'd have to switch the card between PCI slots just for it to be recognized, and sometimes it was recognized as something else. Finally, it got recognized, I installed the original drivers, and for days it worked fine.

Now I am back to square 1, and I can't hardly stay in regular mode for...any amount of time really. Screen goes black, PC r... Read more

Have a client that has one of the more interesting usb issues i've seen. If the computer is on, and you plug in any usb key, it will not be recognized. If you turn the pc off, put any usb key in, and boot up, it will not be recognized. Howeveor, if you reboot the system, and add the key whilst the system is booting up, it will recognize it.

When it does not show up, it does not show up in windows explorer, nor can I map a drive to it. The OS is XP Pro. I have not tested any other usb devices in that port, only keys. But three of htose have replicated the problem.

any ideas?

I'll try to make this brief. I'm attempting to do a startup repair using a Vista Disc (burned copy), from a friend, on my laptop....a Dell. I configured the boot sequence to start at the CD/DVD, and started her up. It did the whole Windows loading files. Came to the screen asking me language, keyboard etc etc. Came to the next screen asking if I want to do a install or repair, I picked repair and now......I'm looking at the background graphic that came up behind the two previous screens, my white cursor arrow....annd......it's just sitting there, for almost an hour now. It has yet to enter the next screen....see link below

Windows Vista Startup Repair - Wait for System Recovery Options to Locate Windows Vista on Your Computer

But, you see that background behind it, that is all I'm seeing right now. Am I just being impatient? I would think it should have moved to the next screen.Problem is, Windows and their infinite wisdom don't always tell you if something is in progress etc.

Hi all,
Here is one for you:

I hope I can get all this straight in writing. My configuration is as follows:

1) Vista Business/Windows 7 (my machine)
2) Proliant DL360 (windows 2003 Enterprise sp2) Both net adapters hooked up.
3) HP Media Center Vista Ultimate/Windows 7
4) Home brew xp pro sp2

6) Home brew xp pro sp3
7) Macintosh G3 10.3.9
8) Xbox

Level One router WBR-3048
Level One usb net adapter
Netgear FS-16 switch

All this is fed by a comcast modem/router.

I have the comcast modem hard wired to the WBR-3048, from that router I am hard wired to #1, then also hard wired to the FS-16. The FS-16 is then hard wired to x2 to #2, #3, #5, #6, #7 and #8. As you can see I don't have #4 hard wired. The WBR-3048 is feeding a wireless to #4 via the Level One usb adapter.

So all this worked until today. Mind you all the machines have internet no issues there. However my network mapping on the entire network took a serious dump. On my machine #1, I can only see #3 now. Period. Ironically though I can remote desktop into #4, #2 and #3 with no issues. I have a printer hooked up to #2 (server) and everybody can print to it. I cant get into files on any of the other machines with the exception of #4 or use remote desktop.
In network on my machine #1 only #3 shows up now whereas as of this morning they all showed up including the damn G3.
Now on all the xp machines when I hit workgroup they all give me an error saying I don't have permission to do th... Read more

I've got a user on a wyse thin client. On the wyse box, anytime she click on either 'attach' from the main ribbon or the insert ribbon, the attach window opens and the app freezes. When she opens a new email and drags and drops, it works fine. When she logs onto a pc on the domain, it works flawlessly. I've checked/done the following:

no disco'd network drives
reset nav pane
outlook in safe mode
dumping cookie and cache from IE
removing email profile and re-adding
cached/non-cache mode
switching between text, rich text, and html in the editor options
repairing the ost
repairing outlook
repairing the entire damn 2010 office suite

I'm thinking at this point it's her wyse profile that needs rebuilding, but given the endless vagaries of the dfs servers, I'd just as soon not do that. The wyse pulls it's image from our HQ, I've got hundreds of users on them, this one is the only one with this rather interesting and very frustrating issue.

A:[SOLVED] interesting issue

hello ,

what you need to do is run a (chkdsk /r) or a scandisk (same thing)

then do this

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)
#5 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & / )

Hope anyone can help i have had this issue for some time.

First the problem:

Sometimes when i have had to restart my pc i have noticed my frame rate hits rock bottom, and also i have noticed alot of other things are sluggish. Ram seems slow, HDD transfer rates are slower, basically everything is slower. It normally takes turning off the PC, turning off the PSU and draining the power (Press the power till it beeps a few times) leave it for about 1hour and turn it all on again and then everythign is fine.
Everythign will stay fine untill either, PC crashes or auto update restarts it. I usually get 3-4days out of the machine until i have to repeat the cycle.
Now. The interesting thing, someone on the nvidia forums was complaining of low fps aswell, he also mentioned after looking at the Nvidia contorl panel it showed his PCI-E being only x1.
I decided to take a look. when my pc is running on low FPS sure enough my PCI-E is showing as x1. Today i have turned it on after being left off overnight and everything is fine and my PCI-E shows as x16

I first thought it was my PSU as it is one of the only items in the machine that was not originally replaced before Vadim went bust. Either the power is not supplying properly, i have a dodgy rail or something. But now i am pen to suggestions, I would liek to narrow it down as best i can as i dont want to pay out for a PSU i cant afford if it is not goign to fix it.

Any ideas anyone?

This is my first time posting here, so thank you for the time reading. I'm having a unique issue, or at least it seems unique to me. My computer will start up and show the first second of the boot up process and mention the RAM, and goes black. Then it shows a large screen of numbers/letters for the boot up I'd assume. It's normal to see it, then goes black again. 30 seconds later, the Windows XP loading bar shows up for just a second, then goes black. The "Starting Up Windows" prompt comes up, and I see my Profile there, but then the screen goes black. I can use memory to click on the profile, log in, etc, but the screen is still black but I can hear the windows start up music.
The whole computer is boot up, it's only showing me the first second, literally just a second, of the new screens as they cycle through and never come back until it gests to the next section. I've resate the video card as well as other portions plugged into the mobo, so I'm really at a loss of what to do since those are just simple ideas.
Let me know what you think could be. I'm fairly computer literate so I have some grasps.

Hellllloooo! I've got a somewhat unique issue on my hands here. I have an old HP desktop (used to be my parents) that I'm tinkering with and there are some interesting things happening with it. I'm usually pretty good with troubleshooting (plenty of builds under the belt) but this one leaves me puzzled.

HP pavilion 5000-series desktop
533mHz Intel Celeron processor
256MB ram

Okay so here's the issue: My parents decided to destroy the old HD (10GB) for whatever reason, which had WIN98 installed on it. Besides being old and slow, it booted up okay and had no serious issues. I had a spare 20GB drive from a different older HP, which I am trying to install on this machine. All up until this point is fine, and it powers up okay, POSTs all drives spinning and ID'd in BIOS. The tricky part is when I try and boot from CD. I have various linux boot CDs and DOS boot CDs. Every time I try and boot from a CD (even windows install discs) it will give me "no operating system found". I tried win98, win2000, winXP and various linux distros all with the same result. The boot order in BIOS is CD>floppy>HD so to my knowledge this should be working. I've checked all the jumper settings on these drives and they're all set correctly--and the live CDs shouldn't even need a HD. My gut reaction is that the CD drive is not reading properly, and the HD has a bad install on it. I honestly don't know what is on the HD ... Read more

Hi folks! As the title suggests, and I'm sure my post count will confirm, this is my first post on the forums here.

I'm having issues after an OS recovery with one of my Windows 10 machines. When I attempt to connect to my wireless router, it shows "Connected, Secured" but "no network connection" and no internet as a result. This same machine connects to my phone's hotspot just fine (This is, in fact the connection I am using to type this).

We have another desktop, a laptop, 3 Android phones, and 2 tablets all able to access the internet through the router (a Mikrotik Routerboard RB951Ui-2HnD provided by my ISP) with no issues.

I have reset both the PC and the router several times with no success. I tried changing the settings so that public and private networks would have the same levels of access...

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. I'm pretty much stumped at this point.

Hello and thank you for reading my post in advance.

Yesterday I reinstalled my Windows 7. Everything went well, however, once I went into my BIOS settings after the install to set my primary booting device to the one which the OS is located on, it did not boot. I restarted and found a new entry along the booting drives, called Windows Boot Manager. I tried to start the system up from that and it worked but still it is weird. Windows is the only operating system I have on right now so there is no point in having to boot from the BM.
I tried a lot of things already to fix this but no luck yet. Do you have any idea how could I make it so Windows boots from my C:/ drive?

Hello lymecore, welcome to Seven Forums!

If you have more than a single internal Hard Disk Drive connected the Windows 7 System boot files may have been created to another HDD and may need to be (re)created to the Windows 7 partition to sort this issue, start with a look at this tutorial linked below for some information on this; it would also be helpful to post a snip of Windows disk management for us to have a look at.

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire Windows disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

When it moves (usually to the top) the properties also change to Top as well, yet when it returns to the large icon size, the icons remain small and the option for small icon remains ticked.

I think this might have started after installing Office 2010, but it was definitely sometime after NVD 257.15, however it occured again after uninstalling the drivers (screen mode changed) so i expect it might be a running process causing it :\.

Greetings and salutations! I have come seeking aid for a problem that has been plaguing my laptop recently.

So let me begin with the story. The computer in question is a Toshiba Satellite, an M45 (model#PSM40U-07V001 to be precise). 2.2 Ghz processor, 1 gig ram.

Runs windows XP SP3 (whatever version is latest, I'm sorry I can't look at the exact version # atm, but I can try to get it if it becomes relevant.)

So the issue began about 8 months ago, after I installed a legit copy of Medieval Total War (Gold Edition) from the CDs. I had been playing the game for some time, and probably against better judgement, I frequently left the laptop on in sleep mode with the game running, rather than actually saving it and turning the PC off. I also did this for a much longer period of time than is likely advisable (span of weeks), and eventually, I began to encounter some odd errors.

Allow me to explain, as this is actually a multi-step issue. The first thing that began to happen, was that my keyboard functions began to act strangely. Keys wouldn't perform the actions they were supposed to, and the machine began to randomly launch empty instances of Windows Media Player. This effect would not only permeate the game, but any windows function or program I could open.
(I RECENTLY discovered that what is happening is my computer is acting like I am holding down the Alt key, even though I am not. I will explain more on this later.)

Soon after, the computer began to BSO... Read more

The BSOD you mentioned is usually a sign of a RAM problem.

Download memtest and burn it to a CD. Boot from the CD (check the BIOS boot options) and let it run at least 7 times.

A couple of days ago, the mouse cursor began making active just about any window it was passed over. For example, when in Photoshop, I'll have 2 or more images open and while moving the mouse from a tool pallette to the image I'm working on, if I pass the cursor over an image thats not at the front, the image thats passed over will become active.
I know there's a registry setting to change the mouse's behavior but I've looked/searched the registry for 'mouse' and I don't see any keys that look as though they are related to whats happening with this issue.
Can anyone point me in the right direction and help get my mouse behaving the way I'd like it to?
I did try a reapir install of PS, uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse drivers and tried another mouse. None of these things worked.

I've been running 7 for a while with no real issue except for a somewhat annoying bug that seems to be causing some kind of grief with desktop graphics.

Imagine the scenario; you boot up your computer, arrive at your desktop and decide you want to check your emails. You open up your browser, or email program and check your emails. No big deal. You now decide you'll leave your emails open and execute iTunes, WMP or play a game, great! 7 does it fast and doesn't beat about it. After a little while you're tired of your music or game and you decide to exit, on exit you discover you open window of your emails is completely corrupted, with stretched text, misplaced items or, completely unreadable.

Well this is what I have been experiencing from almost the beta versions. Now I am technically minded and have done a lot of testing on my hardware to be sure nothing is going ape with my graphics card. Games run fine, no artifacts or corruption.

The image attached shows what kind of unusual issue i am encountering. My first thought is nVidia's drivers. But there have been subsequent releases and bug fixes to iron out these bumps. I was wondering if anyone else has been encountering this kind of behavior. My graphics work fine under Vista, XP and Ubuntu, i've even run the win7 drivers in Vista and that was fine. So I'm thinking this could have something to do with WDM, because the same behavior can be induced if a window, overlapping another is closed or minimized.

Hello Xenova, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I have had a few distored windows like in your screenshot with old drivers in the beta build of Windows 7, but not nearly as bad. Usually moving the window or refreshing it fixed the issue. I'm using the latest NVIDIA drivers now, and do not seem to have this problem anymore.

Hi All,

So the other day at work I needed to setup a bridge between my NIC and Wireless NIC on my laptop to give a few devices temporary wireless access. So I plugged into the network and then bridged my two connections.. Funny thing was that everytime I did this my connection would die on the NIC and the port I plugged into would be dead. It turns out that the switch was freaking out everytime I tried creating this bridge because it saw its traffic going through two interfaces, I somehow caused a lot of trouble on the network according to my net admin.. have any of you guys experienced this or heard of this happening? I'm kinda of just curious at this point..

Hi team !

This is the current scenario:

Installed Windows XP on an Arbor ITX board with an IDE 200gb HD.
All went fine, the installation went through, drivers were loaded and the computer runs great.
Several restarts later, all is fine, no problems found.
I decided to make a ghost image of the drive so i can back up the partition. I plugged an 160Gb HD, initialized and partitioned it and made the image via DOS with Norton Ghost using PARTITION to PARTITION method. All went fine.
Afterwards, i activated the 160Gb partition with Fdisk so it can boot. All fine.
I booted the machine with the new 160Gb drive, the windows XP blue bar appeared and all went fine.
After several seconds, windows blue screen with the small windows xp logo appears, however, it does not goes beyond that point. This screen is the one that should be reading "windows is loading" or "loading your personal settings", however, that legend never comes up and the machine stops loading the system there. I have to restart the whole computer and then I'm back to the same screen.
Curious thing is that the mouse is still working, i am able to move it around the screen, but cannot do a thing with it.

I can hit F8 to bring the boot menu and select Safe mode, however, it freezes during the safe mode loading and stays on the whole list of files being loaded.
Last Known Working Configuration does the same as loading normally.

Any ideas on what might have gone wrong?

Thanks a lot !

Hey there, everyone. I got a question I was hoping you could all help me out with.
So get this. Trying to install a Windows Vista upgrade on a Windows 2000 system. The only issue is, on the 2000 system, the boot file is corrupt or something. Now when running the upgrade installation, it cannot detect the 2000 OS to perform the upgrade. Windows 2000 System Repair does not detect the OS either. Should I just go ahead and start backing up everything on the hard drive, or perhaps would I be able to somehow avoid having to go through that?

Hello All,

I am having a weird problem with my internet connection lately. I have a Motorola Surfboard 5101 cable modem which was working fine for the last one year connected to a dlink 1310 router. From the last two days, I wasn't getting internet with my router, but I get everything when I connect the ethernet cable from the modem directly to my Mac. I thought the router had some issues and replaced it with a Belkin router. But I still face the same issue. Then I re-connected the ethernet cable from the modem directly to my PC now. And I can't get the internet unless the cable guy refreshes it or I do a manual reset. Everytime I change computers connected directly to the internet, I had to refresh. I thought the modem is at fault and replaced it with a Scientific Atlanta modem and I still face the same issue. Everything works with my Mac but nothing works with the PC unless I reset the modem.

One thing I noticed is that, Mac & PC both get a invalid IP the first time I connect, but some how with in 30 sec, Mac is able to refresh itself with a valid IP.

I called the cable guys and they tired for 2 hrs and left it to my own fate.
Please Help. Thanks In Advance

I have a rather interesting issue when i try to upload images on various sites (does not matter which site).
Whenever i press the submit button the computer comrpletly freeze, if i have music on it repeats the halv second of sound that was playing at that moment and the computer does not respond to any commands.
The only solution is to reboot holding down the power button.
The first thing i suspected was a bad disk so i have since tried to move the pictures around to different disks, partitions and places on disks but the problem remains.
The wierd thing is that it is not every time, some of the times the images manage to submit (its different images every time as well) and some of the times they don't.
I checked the error logs but most of the time i don't get any notes, just unexpected shutdown once i reboot.
Sometimes i do get notes added to the error log, i think it only happens when i use Truecrypt mounted volumes tho;
The default transaction resource manager on volume I: encountered a non-retryable error and could not start. The data contains the error code.
I have also run a checkdisk scan of the primary drive (its a laptop so only got one) but found no faults.
Defragmentation runs scheduled as default in vista, have spybot and avira running at all times and both does weekly system scans.

Not sure when the problem started since i usually don't upload images all that often but haven't noticed it any time before about 2 weeks ago.

Trying to get a friend fixed up here... she had her email account (inboxes and all) disappear from her Thunderbird 2.x. Local Folders are still there and she is receiving mail somehow, all her Inbox subfolders are still there and populated, but the mail account has disappeared from the tree and all her old Inbox contents are missing.

Now here's the thing: the entire original Inbox and the rest of the account are still there in the profile folder on the disk, but the folder tree in Tbird doesn't show them.

And now the really odd part: I created a new test account with fake settings... and it doesn't appear in Tbird's folder tree either.

Any thoughts on this?

Weird issue - the system clock, which I set myself when I have purchased and set-up the laptop recently, displays time / date correctly on the task bar (lower right). However many applications see it differently. Here are two main culprits:

the e-mail client (thunderbird) displays ALL messages approximately 4 hours prior to the actual time received

altcoin wallets, when I install them for the first time ALL say (I have like a dozen of them now) - "warning: please check that your computer's date / time are correct. If your clock is wrong, your XXXXcoin wallet will not function correctly."

So it appears that at least to the applications, the system clock is NOT set-up correctly, even though it is displayed correctly on the task bar.

Anyone have any ideas?

Very much appreciate any assistance in advance.

Have you set your actual location correctly on your computer. Left click on the clock in the Task Bar & select Change Date & Time Settings, then select Change Time Zone click on the little down arrow & find your correct time zone.

Hi all,

This is just an interesting problem I discovered and resolved that I don't understand--but if someone else has it, perhaps this will help.

For the past few days, I have been unable to access my Home Page, which is www.comcast.net from IE.6.0.28. It appears that the site get's accessed, but then gets redirected--and IE sits there working and working, with lots of fast messages flashing on the screen in the lower left (where the status is displayed)--but eventually I have to STOP the access.

I could access the site from the same computer, using Netscape--or from a different computer on my same home network using IE.

I was going through the instructions to post a HiJack this log, thinking I had some sort of trojan or virus. One of the steps is to run Stinger. When I launched it, I noticed on the Stinger window, Scan initiated on Friday, May 26, 2006. OPPS, it is not May 26--it is March 26. A quick check, and sure enough my computer was on the wrong date. (I had looked at the calendar and accidently reset the time.)

I reset the clock and date, and just for laughs, went back to www.comcast.net. And it now worked!

I can't for the life of me understand why Comcast would care about what date I have set in my 'puter--nor why it only seems to matter when accessing the site from IE.

Any thoughts or comments!

Denny from Minnesota

A:Interesting network share issue - Vista

If you can drive a packet sniffer, I'd suggest taking two traces and comparing them: one trace of a PC#4 to PC#3 access attempt which results in a prompt, and another in reverse that goes through without prompting.

It's not clear to me whether you're saying that access works, except you need to retype credentials every time, or whether it's "access denied" whatever you try. If its the former, it may come down to different LMCompatibilityLevel settings on the XP box and NT4 PDC compared to the two Vista machines. That's just a wild guess though, and a packet trace would tell you more about the differences between the "prompted" and "no prompts" access attempts.

Hi everyone! So the issue I've run into is this:

Computer only boots roughly 1/3 of the time. Hard freezes (Cannot move mouse, screen completely frozen - cannot ctrl, alt + delete. Forced to do a hard reset by pressing the power button) upon exiting programs, alt-tabbing, shutting off computer. This happens more often when on Battlefield 3 / SWTOR, but has happened occasionally outside of those. All of the parts in the computer are about a week and a half old, this problem started about a week ago.

I've tried completely re-installing all new drivers, un-crossfiring / using each graphics card individually, lowering performance on each graphics card. This leads me to believe it might be the SSD or the motherboard. The power supply seems to be working fine.

Further looking into this issue, when I unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the router of any port, I lose connection (the lights will go out and then back on) to the other 3 LAN ports still connected.

My thinking is that there is a setting in the router that is linking them, or it's just an issue with the router itself?

I have a hp Pavilion Dv7-2177Cl laptop here with a interesting battery issue. It is run on AC 99% of the time. Never had any problems with it. Last night when I shut it down I noticed the battery light was blinking. I thought that was odd. I know it wasn't before as that would have drove me nuts. When I powered it back up I got a warning that the battery was at a critical level (from the BIOS), and I had to hit enter to continue. It boots fine, but the battery says 0% and won't charge.

I had a spare battery and slipped that in, and everything is fine. So I know it is the battery. Anyone ever have a battery be fine one minute and totally dead the next? Especially for one not used much and kept charged? Seemed a bit odd to me.

I have heard about putting the battery in a freezer for a few days, then letting it thaw and see if it charges then. Anyone ever try this? It is Li-on battery pack.

This is for a stateless virtual desktop always with the same hardware\software.

I redirected %localapdata% to a network share UNC path by editing "Local Appdata" in both HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

and manually copying the existing %localappdata% to the new location and then logging off and back on.

The first indication that something was not working was the event viewer application log was saying the user profile service could not read usrclass.dat permission denied on \\server\share\username\local\\usrclass.dat.

Everything else is redirected fine except for usrclass.dat. It turns out that during login, usrclass.dat is read not by my user account but by the domain computer account. This is kind of weird. By using icacls on the network share to grant "domain computers"
recursive access to \\server\share\username, the next login was just fine.

The existing permissions are Full for the owner.

icacls username /grant "Domain Computers":F /T

My question is why is the "Domain Computer" aka local NT Authority\System retrieving the usrclass.dat instead of my user account? Is there a way to change this behavior so that I dont need to share my local profile with all "Domain Computers"?

Before I get to the log, I'd like to explain my issue; more of an annoyance than an apparent threat.
Every hour or so, there's a brief Command Prompt window or two that suddenly pops up, but disappears so fast it can't be read. I've even recorded the desktop in order to catch the frame, but the cmd doesn't stay up long enough to even show anything. It's annoying because it minimizes whatever window I currently have open.
Things I've used:
Plenty of different Malware removal tools. Nothing gets detected, in Safe Mode or otherwise.
Event Viewer doesn't give me anything when I check for random applications or services that suddenly run.
Task Scheduler likewise does not show any processes launching when these cmd windows pop up.
Now for the HijackThis log, I noticed a number of strange entries, which I've bolded:

You have spyware

NEWDOT is spyware that hijacks your web browser and host file. You need to remove it. First you need to remove this key from the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\new.net startup
After you have deleted this key you need to reboot your system. Then run msconfig and go to startup and stop these process
(may or may not exist):
Then you will need to do a file search for newdot(here is an example list)
You will have to unregister each of then and then delete them. If you don't know how go to this site http://articles.networktechs.com/111-p1.php
Then remove the folder %program_files%\newdotnet
And to finish it up run a regcleaner if you don't have one here is a link to one
Hope this helps.

I've recently (in the past few weeks) been having trouble with Internet Explorer, version 7.0.5730.11. When I first open the program, the page is blank, and the status bar (bottom of the IE window) briefly flashes "Detecting proxy settings" and then sits at "Connecting to site" for several minutes before displaying the typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen.

In dealing with the problem, I've found that whenever I get the "Connecting to site" message in the status bar, I immediately close IE, then reopen it. Sometimes the first time I do this results in Google (homepage) loading, but most of the time I must repeat this proces several times (up to about 10) before IE loads Google.

When already working properly, I've noticed that IE has no problems opening links in new windows or tabs. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this problem?

Relevant Information:

Windows XP Service Pack 3
IE version 7.0.5730.11

Please let me know if additional information is required, and I will do my best to provide it. Thanks for reading.

A:IE7 Connectivity Issue

Using Geo Spider, = Google.

Are you using something like the Google Toolbar? Try using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it. If this solves your problem, you can try reinstalling Google Toolbar.

I am currently trouble shooting a network problem for a medium size company, aprox 250 users. The issue is as follows:
A connectivity problem occurs on random clients which leaves them with an ip address received from DHCP server but the client only has connectivity with its own vlan. (DHCP server on different VLAN) The switch has ip helper set up so the communication to get an ip address is being done via the switch and on to the DHCP server.(The primary function of IP helper) The client can't ping anything outside its own VLAN.
Our only work around is to assign a static DHCP ip address on the DHCP server using the MAC address of the client. Issue an ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew on the affected client to get the assigned static DHCP address and full connectivity is restored.
There is a mix of Cisco and 3com switches, mostly Cisco with a Cisco 3750 multi layer switch at the heart of the network.
I have analysed the configuration of the devices and everything looks good.
I know its hard to diagnose from this brief description but any similar problems experienced and solutions discovered are appreciated.
