Preferred Solution: Can't Open exe file (Applications) in Windows 2000 Server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't Open exe file (Applications) in Windows 2000 Server

go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

Hello,

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

home\Josh

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

Josh

Iíve got a server (HP DL360 G2) with Windows 2000 Server edition running a proprietary web based application and hosting approximately 12 printer shares. Recently just about everyday all 12 printers will stop responding. I canít print to them from this web based application, I canít print from Word, and I canít print test pages from workstations or the server.

When I log onto the server to open the Printers Folder, nothing happens. Folder wonít open, My Computer wonít open, Explorer wonít open a window, etc. The server isnít however locked up as I can use the mouse and keyboard. Shortly after this happens, I get complaints that the web based application has stopped responding.

At this point I canít go to Start and do a restart, the screen fades out to grayish color and hangs. I have to do a hard reset to get the server back online.

Iíve contacted the manufacture of the web based application, while doing research; they donít believe their application is causing the problem. The server has been scanned for viruses and spyware with clean results. Nothing appears to be running in the background that shouldnít be. The server has 1.5Gigs of memory and several gigs of free space.

What should I start looking at from this point? Iíve tried just about everything I can think of as far as driver issues, corrupt software, viruses, spyware, etc Ö Any ideas?

Thanks,
MePH

We have a practice billing and scheduling on the host PC, and do not have the disks, so can not be copied onto other PCs. What would I need to set it up as a server. Having purchased an existing practice, money is an issue. So, even simple file sharing could work, but would it be secure enough for patient info?
I would appreciate any tech steps to setting up either options. Again, thank-you. Emy

What can I do to change the owner of a file from the lab Technician account to the current user?. Thanks in advance Ray.

I have a client who uses this very very bad (in my opinion) industry-specific software. It runs on a Windows 2000 Server in Terminal Services. The problem is that whenever a user opens this program, there is a session file created by it (unrelated to the operating system's login). This isn't a problem, as it's deleted when they log off... except for when this nasty program stops responding or closes without warning! Then there's a user file left over. If you try to delete it, it says that the file is locked or in use... access denied. If we restart the server (after painfully having everyone log off), I can delete the file fine... So, my quesion is: (1) is there a way of un-locking a file without restarting when this happens? And (2) is there a way to disable file locking in Windows 2000 Server?

I've found a bit of information about "opportunistic file locking", but it doesn't seem to have helped this specific problem. I figure if we can find some way to disable file locking, at least I could run a batch program every so often to delete out-dated log-ins before they run out of licenses and need to reboot.

Any help / info / etc is appreciated!

Sounds like it could be spyware/adware. Download HijackThis and post a log file for the experts to look over.

Can be downloaded from www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Be sure to save the EXE file in a non-TEMP folder and run from there.

But at the same time, when I am running normal mode, during Start UP and at anytime time after that... when I opened any .exe (for example msword.exe); a "program error" appears and close it back.

Dear All,
I have a problem where i am having 2 application server clustered and both using a common file folder (residing on one app server and access by other through mapping network drive). This common shared folder is storing some files used in application. Now my problem is that because of sharing folder this way, my application starts running slowly and performance is hampered. It application actually stop running as file is not getting opened. If i remove the clustering and just work with one app server (ofcourse file folder residing on the same server) it works fine. Can somebody tell me what can be the problem if i access the files through mapped network drive. I am using windows server 2K with 2 GB RAM.

Appreciate the help on this.

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

After the darn Microsoft update was installed a lot of problems have occurred.
Every time I boot the system a new annoyance come up.
I was used to right click a .jpg (or some other pictures extensions) and have the option to choose Adobe Photoshop.
The Photoshop suddenly vanished from the menu ; the applications shown on the list do not interest me.
Clicking on "Choose another app " I will find the same list and "Look for an app in the store" does not interest as well as I have Photoshop installed.
With previous versions like XP and windows 7 I had the option to choose Look for another app on this PC, but not with windows 10. Does anyone know a regedit hack or something else ? Thanks.

A:right click a file : open with > ... how add my applications ?

That's quite odd. I replied to a post asking something similar, but about portable apps. Here is the post. See if you can find what you want by following what I wrote. You should see below the "Look for an app in the store" something that says "More apps" which has a downward arrow beside it. Click on that and you'll find some more app suggestions; hopefully the one you want. If not, you can even find the executable using a file chooser.

It really depends on if the program gave the user that installed it the ability to install it for all users. Win2000 keeps a different set of registry settings for each user, therefore not all programs would work correctly if everybody had access to them..

You may try moving a shortcut for the program to the "all users" "start menu" folder, it may or may not work.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

After double clicking on the file, Excel opens and acts as if it is opening the file but then proceeds to show just a blank worksheet. Any suggestions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to the cause and resolution for this.

I had a database in SQL Server 2000 that has one primary data files and no secondary. The DB in danger of becoming too large for it's current drive. If I create a secondary data file on another drive will this resolve my problem?

A:Solved: SQL Server 2000-Secondary Data File

Hi there,

Yes if you create a seconday data file the primary will fill till it can no longer grow and SQL will then use the secondary. See below extract from help File.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 maps a database using a set of operating-system files. All data and objects in the database, such as tables, stored procedures, triggers, and views, are stored within these operating-system files:

Primary
This file contains the startup information for the database and is used to store data. Every database has one primary data file.

Secondary
These files hold all of the data that does not fit in the primary data file. If the primary file can hold all of the data in the database, databases do not need to have secondary data files. Some databases may be large enough to need multiple secondary data files or to use secondary files on separate disk drives to spread data across multiple disks.

Transaction Log
These files hold the log information used to recover the database. There must be at least one log file for each database.

sounds like either something in the suspect file - you said it had macros in it, what are they supposed to do? - or something in the start up.

However, upon rebooting my computer out of safe mode, I was shocked to see that the problem still persisted.

Any ideas as to what the problem may be?
Also, how do I go about posting those logs I've seen? I'm not the sharpest when it comes to computers so excuse my ignorance. I assume posting one of those could help in figuring out what is wrong with my computer.

Hi -PUP.Adware.Magni also known as Adware.Magnipic is a minor infection but usually removed in Normal Mode. Try to download these in Safe Mode with Networking -Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE* Save it to your Desktop.* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.  Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop. There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.NOTE : You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.Do not reboot until instructed. If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.If normal mode still doesn't work, run the too... I cannot open many applications in Windows 7 including Firefox, MS Word, and Excel. Some that do open will freeze during use. I suspect that a virus or malware could be causing these problems. The applications open in Windows Safe Mode okay. Here's the Hijackthis and DDS log:

I recently turned on my computer to find a windows explorer error message. When I click close on the error, the same error pops back up.
I finally got the error message to stop on startup and the computer worked fine but now when I access any windows based programs, windows explorer, my computer, control panel, IE 7, my computer puts the error message back up.
However, it is strange that when i click "close" windows explorer does not go away, the error message just does but it still prohibits my access to these programs (which really really annoys me).
If anyone can be of assistance I thank you in advance!

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to a .doc file (any .doc file).
Right click it and select "Open with".
Then selct "choose program"

From the list, select Microsoft Office Word and check the box "always use the selected program..."

OK

That should restore the file association.

You can use multitier applications to provide employees, customers, and partners with controlled access to your organizationís resources. Hi,

I am using windows 7 professional 64 bit. Recently some programs such as iTunes and VLC player open 15 minutes later after i double click their icons and iTunes works really slow.

Any idea about how to fix this problem?

Thanks

A:windows 7 applications open too late

Hi MertTheGreat and Welcome to TSF,

When you double-click to open these applications, do they appear in the Task Manager as a process? (Ctrl + alt + delete > Processes-tab).

Also in the taskmanager, do you see any abnormal CPU/Memory usage?

If it's just related to a few specific applications, I would recommend you to Repair the application or possibly reinstall it, and see if that makes a difference.

Also as a general tip, make sure Windows is up to date, and that you're using the latest versions of your applications and drivers.

I was stumbling on firefox when all of a sudden my computer shut down. Upon reboot it would not allow me to run any .exe programs. It won't let me run them even if I click on them right at start up. I can open folders and start task manager, but other than that I can't do anything. Reboots take forever and don't work sometimes. I already updated all the registry files also and restored it and neither method worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also a side note, watching taskmanager lets me see that the computer is opening processes with an .exe file type but won't allow applications at all.

A:Windows 7 won't open all any installed applications

Hello Gussuk, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could download and merged the EXE and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below to restore their default associations.Default File Type Associations - Restore
Afterwards, I would recommend to scan your system with MalwareBytes free to help make sure your system is clean.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
