Asus Laptop CD Drive Makes Loud Grinding Noise

Q: Asus Laptop CD Drive Makes Loud Grinding Noise

Hello,

My CD drive is making loud noises. This doesn't occur all the time. For example,I'm watching a DVD - Criminal Minds Season 4 and it allowed me to watch the episodes fine but when I tried to watch a deleted scene, it made this loud grinding noise and it wouldn't stop even when I clicked stopped in Windows Media Player. It only stopped when I removed the DVD.

This also occurred when I was watching another DVD, I was trying to skip through it and it made that loud grinding noise again but it still played after it got to where I wanted it to be. But with the Criminal Minds DVD, it won't work even when I leave the DVD grinding to see if it'll go to the deleted scene.

I don't understand what's going on. I barely used it before but now it's acting up. I never dropped my laptop or hit it.

I'm attaching the sound it makes. I hope there's a way I can fix this on my own.

Btw, the deleted scene worked on my sister's Toshiba laptop. It made no loud noises. It was smooth.

Edit: Here is the sound it makes. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...int=file%2cm4a It's the one named DVD drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A DVD drive will make noise. Whirring and a little bit of clunking and ticking are normal, but a solid grinding sound does not sound good. You may have to replace that DVD drive.

So i was using my Compaq Evo N620c laptop( Windows XP) and i put it on stand by. When i came back, i started the laptop up and it started making a really loud high pitched noise almost like a whistle. I restarted the laptop and it started making the same noise. I went on safe mode and the noise stopped and everything louded perfectly. Than when i went back on my regular account and it started making the noise again. The noise only starts at the blue loading screen for XP. I had this laptop for 2 years and this is the first time this ever happened.

Will the noise stop if I open up my laptop and use a duster ( high pressure air) and i take out all the dust out of my fan and hard drive?

Thank You

A:Laptop makes a really loud grinding noise

No way to tell for sure what the noise is coming from with the info provided. Could be a fan, could be a hard drive. I suggest you go ahead and try blowing the dust out with canned air through the cooling vents. Use short bursts instead of a continuous blast. First blow air into the exhaust port first, then into the intake port. Repeat until no more dust appears.

Try one thing first... mute the sound. Audio hardware can do some strange stuff.

Just finished installing my upgrades to my computer, including a nice new H100, and it would appear my hopes for a silent PC one day have been blown out of the water, with this cooler at least. The pump unit is making a sound like...well...a loud pump really, a constant grinding/buzzing/humming noise, kinda like a failing hard drive spinning. I know for a fact they are not meant to perform this way, and I have read many topics about this, but I am a little uncertain still.

Has anyone actually encountered this problem and/or knows how to fix it? Replies I have seen involve:

-Shaking it/bending pipes/generally moving it about (perhaps moving air bubbles?)
-Lowering the voltage (apparently at 12V the pump can be prone to this)

Obviously the shaking/moving thing is a pain cause you just gotta keep doing it till it works (or doesn't), and it requires the removal of the block which requires thermal paste to be reapplied, etc, pain in the ass. The voltage thing sounds very plausible, but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it.

Can anyone give me a specific/accurate explanation of what the noise is and/or how I can (prefereably not might, but rather can) fix this?

Thanks.

A:H100 pump makes somewhat loud grinding noise

Update:

This site here had quite a few solutions such as those I mentioned earlier:
Corsair H100 pump noise

I have tried tapping the pipes, that only made it a bit louder, and I've cycled through the pump settings but that has done nothing. I don't want to remove the block because I'm in debt and I have no thermal paste I can use if I need to replace what is on there already which is probably a good idea. I have no molex to molex adapter I can use to make a makeshift voltage adapter either. Bit of a predicament :P

I have a four year old HP Pavilion with windows XP. Three years ago, the CD drive needed to be replaced so we bought a used one for $10. It worked fine until today. I ejected the tray and it only came out halfway and made a grinding noise. I inserted and ejected it a couple more times and it did the same thing. Then, it finally wouldn't open at all. Now when I try to eject it, the light flashes and it makes the same grinding noise but it doesn't open.

I tried to eject it from My Computer and it did the same thing. I take classes on the computer and use CD's for class so I need my CD drive. Is there any way I can fix it? I'm a student on a small income and I don't know when I could afford another one. If there's something I could do to get it working again, that would be great. I'll try to answer all your questions.

Thanks for your help.

I had closed my laptop cover a few minutes before (or maybe much less?) so it was in some state of hybernation. When I opened it, I pressed the power button and it made such a loud, high-pitched noise that it was piercing and my ears are still ringing from it.

Any ideas? I timidly started it up and it seems to be working just fine. I'm backing it up now.

Thanks, Peter

Hi Janbiv2
Thanks for writing to us.
Please run diagnostics from f12 menu and observe for any clicking noise during test.
The noise could be either from fan or from the HD.
You can remove the HD and try on another machine if possible or try another HD on this machine.
Also run the machine without the HD and observe if the noise stops.
Do keep us posted about the test results.

Hi everyone,
I have a really annoying problem with my Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop. Whenever I want to play games on it, the laptop fans start to make an unbearably loud noise that just doesn't let me play at all. This even happens with relatively old games with low system requirements, such as age of empires 3 and league of legends.
This laptop is supposed to be good for gaming, but the fan noise problem makes playing video games virtually impossible. It looks like the computer is going to overheat and break down at any moment. I bought this laptop almost three months ago. Is there something Dell can do about my problem? Can I get a new laptop under warranty? Maybe it's just a specific problem with the one I bought.
Please give me some solutions, thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, about 4 years old.

I've had this problem for a while now. Whenever I take my laptop inside my bedroom, unplugged or plugged in, doesn't matter, when I try to watch a YouTube video, 10-30 seconds in my laptop freezes and makes a loud buzzing noise from either my headphones or speakers (depends on what I'm using). If I leave it in my room it can take up to 1 minute to recover, while if I grab it and walk out of my room, and go to the living room it recovers immediately. My bedroom is 11-12 meters away from the router (I'm 99% sure this is an internet issue), and I have 3-4 bars of internet connection when inside it.
We also have an old computer (like 2008 or something, but the specs are pretty bad) and when we used to have it inside my bedroom it would never crash (we use wireless internet with the desktop as well, with a usb wireless adapter). Both are running the same operating system (Windows 7)

This has been a problem since the first time I tried to take my laptop in my room. Due to this problem, I am forced to do everything on my living room aka no privacy. I'm begging for a solution.
I did not buy this laptop, it was a gift from someone from what I remember. It used to have a hard drive which broke (had this problem with the first harddrive), so we changed to another harddrive, then that broke as well and now i'm using a Kingston SSD, and the problem is still here. I know its not a harddrive issue, just stating that the problem still ... Read more

Hey everyone. So recently, my computer made a scary grinding sound that was quite loud and after opening it up and inspecting it, it seemed to be coming from the hard drive. A few google searches suggested this was most likely the problem. As a side note, this only happened after having my computer turned off for two days and happened on boot-up.

I went out and bought a new hard drive and installed it, however when I turned my computer on (with my old drive still in it to clone) the sound was gone. Anyways, I cloned the drive and set my old drive as a new partition designated Z: to keep as extra storage since it seemed to be working alright. Then, today, (again, after having the computer off for a day) the noise began again and I got an error screen with the options "Run Windows Repair" and "Start Windows Normally" or something to that effect. I started windows normally, because since my old drive was empty this shouldn't have caused any issue. Windows started up as usual, but I tried loading chrome and it seemed to be loading quite slowly. Not wanting to further the issue I turned it off again and removed the old hard drive.

I turned it on once more, and to my dismay, the sound continued. It doesn't sound like it could be coming from anywhere but my hard drive, however I unplugged and removed my CD/DVD drive to rule that out, and the noise continued. The new hard drive is a different brand and size and this has me worried that it could be something ... Read more

Hi,
Recently a grinding noise can be heard when I turn on my PC, but not always. So far it has happened twice, the first time I looked inside my PC but found nothing, and the second time it stop after about 5 minutes once the computer had been turned on. I have literally no idea what it is as nothing is touch any of the fans and both HDD's in my build feel fine when I rest my hand on them.
I've made a video of the noise, for which the link is below. You may have to turn your volume up slightly to hear it, but it is much louder in reality.

I have a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
When I put a CD in the drive, it makes a loud noise and the laptop vibrates. However, this only happens when I put a CD-RW disc in the drive. When I put another CD in, such as an audio CD, it doesn't make this noise.
Does this suggest the CD/DVD drive needs replacing?

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop - CD/DVD Drive loud noise

Steveu9,
You can try other types of media in the drive to see if the noise remains. At the link below is an option to run the diagnostics on the drive to see if it is faulty. You must have a disk in the drive to perform the diagnostics.  Also, at the the link below under the drivers section are  cd/dvd firmware downloads. To determine which drive you have in the computer you can click on the configuration tab on the site or input your system service tag. This will show you the hardware information for your computer. You can then choose to download and install the firmware. I cannot verify that updating the firmware will resolve the noise issue.  If you determine that the drive is faulty and you want to replace it. You can call the the dell spare parts dept. One of my HP laptops, HP Pavilion dv9650us, went off warranty about two months ago. I was using the machine to help fix another computer's problem when I noticed that its dvd-drive is making loud grinding noises and is slowing down the computer whenever I would access the drive. I suspect that the drive is about to die.

I am not sure how long the drive has been doing this since the laptop is being used primarily by another family member.

I purchased an extended warranty through Office Depot, but that family member cannot afford for that computer to be sent off for an unknown amount of time so I am actively considering replacing the drive myself.

I am looking at drives on amazon.com and unsure if a 'universal laptop slimline drive' will fit. Are the drives fairly universal between manufactorers? The current drive is an HD-DVD drive so I was hoping to upgrade to a blu-ray drive. Is it possible?

FYI: These kind of internal laptop dvd drives are not available from newegg or even frys. I'd rather not buy directly through hp.

I honestly thought it was going to explode. My laptop just started making a very loud screeching noise from what i believe is coming from the fan while i was playing super dancer online so i shut it off on the spot mainly because it terrified everyone in the room. Is there a way to fix this without money getting involved?and by money i mean techs....the techs down here are just too expensive. What has caused this firstly?right now im on a friend's laptop.

A:Asus now makes a screeching noise

Nope. Because of the way that the cases are manufactured. You would need the correct tools to split the shells, then you would have to make sure you have the correct replacement fan, if that is what is actually making the noise.

I would find a local mom & pop computer repair, that has been around for a while and take it there.

Since you never stated the mfg & model number in your post or System Spec's, there is no way to tell you what you would have to go through if you wanted to do it on your own.

First post, hope I'm doing this right.Hi guys, about 3 weeks ago I purchased a Lenovo ideapad 110. It also happens without earphones, so those aren't the problem. YouTube is when it mainly occurs, however other sites with audio have it too. So recently my laptop seems to be making a low grinding noise, more like the old grinding noise computers use to make when they we loading back in the day, but the thing is it only happens when I scroll up or down on any program, be it chrome, word you name it. It isn't always consistent, sometimes it will be constant as I scroll, or only in short bursts and strange enough, for one instance I was over at ESPN and wasn't even moving the page, but there was a element that kept swiping from one article headline to another and my laptop with grind for the 1 second it took to slide headlines.

There hasn't been any performance issues or negative effects as far as I can tell, but I thought I'd ask around as see if it's perhaps a perquisite to an upcoming one. Anyone experience anything similar?

What is the model and the model number called a type number on the bottom... the model will be something like 600X or T-23. But the type number will be a seven digit one like 2373-8SU.
The problem could be as simple as a stuck key, or as complex as a failed CPU Fan, failed memory, failed hard drive, or a motherboard gone bad.
If it is a repeated beep beep beep etc... with a pause then repeated beeps, count the beeps and tell us. That will usualy be a memory error or a cpu fan or a hard drive... depending on the model and the age.

I just installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on my computer. Its a dual core 2.4 with 4 gigs of ram and a 320 gig hard drive. My hard drive is always running loud like tons of programs are running. I would like Vista a lot more if only my hard drive would be quiet for once. How do I get it to run like normal?

A:Vista makes my hard drive loud

Hi jlskiut83 and welcome to the forum

This is perfectly normal behaviour on a fresh installation of Vista. It is merely the indexing service collecting its data. For more details on this service, see the following Tutorial: Index - Enable or Disable

I have a friend who has a laptop (inspiron 710m) that's been making some loud/weird/concerning noises. It's about 3 years old and has only started doing this within the past month or so. It sounds like it's coming from the fan area, and it sounds like sort of a vibrating noise, or sounds like something is rapidly hitting something else. My first thought was that it's the fan, either off-balance or dirty, but what do you guys think? She said it stops doing it if the laptop is at an angle, which kinda supports that theory.

If it was the fan, would blowing it out with compressed air solve it? She said it hasn't been cleaned ever, so I figure it couldn't hurt. Any ideas?

A:Laptop loud/strange noise =(

If the fan blades are hitting something solid, blowing it out with compressed air will likely not do anything. If the noise alters at different angles, it may be the fan's bearings going out. Often you can find replacement fans on eBay, or search online for make/model.

With the pc, there is a cdr-drive an a dvd-drive. I haven't used the pc for a few weeks, and I shut all power off. I just turned on the power on. Now and then, when using (opening or just reading disc) either the cdr-drive or the dvd-drive, a loud rattling noise starts. Both drives still can read any disc, and the LED-lights also are let. This noise stops when rebooting.

Win xp, AMD Athlon 3500+, 1 gb ram, geforce 7900gt

I'd check my cables inside the system. A lot of times when the system speeds up the wires start vibrating against casing or other things and creates noise. Tighten things up. If the system works and you can live with the noise I don't think it will hurt anything. If it bothers you you'll need to be looking around for a new drive. Jazz

Hey, i have a pc, and i was reformating it, it booted up fine befor, i deleted the parton then choose ntfs to format it, and it said it couldent and it restarted and now nothing loads and the hard drive makes this clunk noise all the time?

Any ideas!

A:Hard drive loud noise?

Is this almost like a rythmic repeated click? If so this is possibly what is called the click of death. which means that the hard drive is possibly dead. Do you know the manufacturer and model of the drive? If so you can go to the manufacturer web site and down load the disk diagnostic tools and test the disk.

Hi,I have had my HP laptop (the model is Notebook- 15-r237nl) for about a year and a half now. Usually, it was making a very strong buzzing noise in the beginning, when I was switching it on, which I found out is normal. Then, it started making softer buzzing noises; however, if I turned the laptop off and on again, they were going away. Now, it is a couple of days that it keeps buzzing quite loud, and it doesn't go away when I try to switch it off and on again. Can anybody help me? Also, it should be some kind of assurance or assistance included for the first two years, right? Thank you very much!!!

No obvious dust in system. Removed one of the fans and looked for cracked blades, etc., everything looks ok. But makes a racket when rotating around. Anything I can do, you know, like spray WD40 on the fan shaft???

I have had my HP Pavilion m3-u001dx for about 3 months now, and there is a problem with it that has finally arisen to my attention. During basic use of the internet and even when the computer is not overheating, the fan is constantly working and creating a loud noise (it sounds very similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkCLubSukzI ). Only once or twice has it every operated silently, and usually the noise comes back after 10 minutes. Once the device even boots up the noise begins. The device is fully updated and relatively new, so I do not think it is dust cluttering the fan or the heat sink.  I use wireless internet, and there haven't been any software/driver changes, so I am unaware of what could be the problem.

hello !   the fan of the hard drive has been making noise for the last x-number of months.  the operating system = genuine windows7 home premium. the product name = qu116aa#aba.  i am sure that it is not an easy forecast in order to know when the fan may die. does any company still support the fan for this equipment ?  should i just buy another computer ?  the model number = p6-2014.  thank you.

A:"...the fan of the hard drive makes a lot of noise..."

Hi, I don't think Hard drive has a fan. It could be CPU fan or the fan of the case (most likely). Can you check to see which one ? Regards.
