X1 Carbon 1st Gen 3460 Fingerprint Reader doesn't work

Q: X1 Carbon 1st Gen 3460 Fingerprint Reader doesn't work

I recently purchased an X1 carbon 1st Gen running windows 10 and I can't find a way to get the fingerprint reader to work. It may not be possible but I thought I would see if anyone here has found a solution. Apparently there is a solution for the type 20AF but I can't find a solution or an updated driver for the Type 3460. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. I have updated my Bios and many of my other drivers. I have tried downloading the Synaptic Metallic drivers as well And I tried updating my AthenTec Driver for the fingerprint reader but it still doesn't work.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,since the recent major Windows 10 update my fingerprint reader does no longer work.It is suggested to use Windows Hello instead, but Hello is not supported on my hardware (3460). Does anybody have a suggestion on how to re-activate the fingerprint reader again? It may be that I (or Microsoft?) deleted the software to earlier activate the reader.  Any hint on how I could get that reinstalled? (Sorry for my english - it's not my first language.Thomas, Zurich - Switzerland

Hi,I have a Thinkpad P50 equiped with a fingerprint reader.Worked perfectly well for months, but suddently stopped working.I verified/updated drivers, but this was not the problem.I then had the bad idea of changing the BIOS security option to enable the pre-POST fingerprint option. Now I end-up with a system that keeps rebooting forever preventing me to access the BIOS configuration.(I guess that after pressing F1 for entering BIOS, it expects me to scan my finger, but doesn't find the reader, so reboots again and again.)Please HELPThank you!!

I've had a really hard time using the fingerprint reader. I've set it up multiple times and entered my fingerprint multiple times in hopes that it'll function better but after 3 times it asks me for the PIN. This is what I want to avoid. One of the reasons I bought the X1 was because of the fingerprint reader. I need it to work as intended and as quickly as a phone. Do I need to forcefully press my finger on the reader? Light pressure? Any ideas? 2017 X1...

Hi, after the change from Windows 8 to Windos 10 I had no problems including the fingerprint reader. Everythink runs fine but with the installation of the latest updates from windows (now there is a new look of some windows) my fingerprint reader doesn't work. I was looking around for some solutions but until now I has not been succesful. The fingerprint software ThinkVantage was also not running. I did all updates from the Lenovo suite but also not successful. Finally I wanted to use Windows Hello to operate the fingerprint reader but Windows Hello is not available on my Laptop ... In system settings there was a note that device has been migrated and an installation is required but I haven't still found where and what. I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 with Windows 10/64 (dual boot with Ubuntu), the fingerprinter is described as Authen Tec. Is somebody out there with the same problem and hopefully with a practicable plan or link to fix it? CheersPeter

Hey guysWe have a heap of X1 carbons and quite a few fingerprint reader issues basically after the system is on for a few days the reader can stop working (normally overnight) when trying to login (windows10 windows hello) the light above the reader is off and it doesnt detect any sort of fingerprint going into device manager, going properties on the reader and unticking "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" fixes this for most people but some still have the issue, we've got some with stock drivers and some with the latest drivers installed any ideas?

So I just got back my laptop from lenovo repairs and the finger print reader dosen't work.   the device manager has dected the fingerprint reader, and claims it is working properly.  I also went into the bios and cleared the fingerprint data.  It doesn't change the problem when I go to set up the fingerprint, I enter my pin and then I get a windows error sound.  the deep "da dah dah".  and then it doesn't proceed any further.   I have no idea what to do next for my laptop.

One has Win10 Home and works just fine. the 3460 has Win10 Pro and the fingerprint reader does not show up as a biometric device and I cannot make it work after searching for solutions.  There are no biometric devices in device manager. There is only an authentication device - TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor. Does anyone know how to test the fingerprint hardware to ensure that it is working? I have tried all the solutions listed online and it never shows up.

I have a 1st gen Carbon x1 type 3448.  It came natively with Win 7.  Ever since I got it, the finger print reader had a hard time reading my finger print unless it is wet.  Is this typical?  Second, I had upgraded it to Win 10.  I now have the authenticate with my finger print once when I start the computer and once when I login via Windows Hello.  I know non-Authentec reader has this problem but my x1 has Authentec reader.  TIA for your answer!

Hi everyone,I have an X1 carbon 2nd Gen laptop, with type 20A8S18T00. Everything works fine except the fingerprint security. I have installed the ThinkVantage Finferprint Software v6.0.0.8102 - the latest one, then the fingerprint driver "should be already installed along" (as I read somewhere).  But when I tried to enroll new fingerprint data, it always show the error E7210005 - "Cannot enroll user. Cannot update passport. Cannot find fingerprint sensor device". I have checked my BIOS Setting and seen that the option "Fingerprint Reader" was disabled and there is no way to select it and change value to Enable or whatever. I have heard people said that option must be enabled before doing making any changes with fingerprint data. Now I'm totally stuck! Here are my BIOS Setting screenshots: 1 - BIOS General Information 2 - Security >> Fingerprint 3 - Security >> I/O Port Access 4 - Security >> Secure Boot Could you please have me solve this case? Thank you so much.

A:[X1 Carbon 2nd Gen] Cannot enable fingerprint reader in BIOS

Hi chaudh76, welcome to the forum.

The correct software for the device is Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...

The version you have listed (v6.0.0.8102) is for ThinkPad X1, X1 Carbon (Type 34xx), not your 20A8.

Make sure you download, and run, the ThinkVantage System Update:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...

If you download, and run the ThinkVantage System Update first, all of your system drivers will be checked. If any of them need updating, they will appear in the list, and you can download/install them through the program.

Also, here is the complete Lenovo support, and download site, for your ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 20A7, 20A8). It contains everything you need: Downloads/Product & Parts/Manuals/Solutions/Videos/Accessories

In the last few weeks, I have noticed the fingerprint reader on my 4th Gen X1 Carbon works infrequently. I find that upon boot, it only works about 25% of the time. The remaining times, I am forced to enter my password and the fingerprint driver shows an error in Windows Device Manager. I am running the lastest version of Windows 10, have completed all recent BIOS updates, and have attempted to reinstall all relevant drivers several times.  Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or if support can provide a solution.

I used to logg in via fingerprint reader (windows 10) without any problems, now the fingerprint reader doesn't react any longer when I draw the finger. I somehow managed to delete all passwords in the password manager (not even sure about this as I actually don't understand how all the components work together) hoping that this would solve the problem. Not the fingerprint reader software keeps asking me to register a new finger. Everything seems to work out fine (I can choose a finger to be registered, type in my windowns password) untill I'm being asked to draw the finger over the fingerprint reader: Nothing happens! The indicator which shows how much of the finger has been scanned doesn't show anything at all. Looks like the software works, but the fingerprint reader itself is dead. However, looking into the system information the 'TouchStrip Fingerprint Sensor' (WBF advanced mode) seems to work correct. Please help. I have not a clue how to find out what goes wrong here.

My laptop recently got a fresh installation of W10x64 and with a little help everything went well.   https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Drivers-missing-for-HP-EliteBoo... "Well." Except the Validity Fingerprint reader (Validity Sensor VFS471, hardware ID USB\VID_138A&PID_003C&REV_0086). Since HP doesn't care about the support of their flaships after few years, there is no driver for this laptop designed for W10. Every driver I tried (picture below) was either ignored by Windows Hello (the reader wasn't recognized) or the Hello started, but the fingerprint texture in dialog box just flashed and didn't accept my finger. Current HP Client Security ignored each of them.                 How to sort it out? HP? Anyone? Thank you.

I've been eyeing this laptop for a while, and was disappointed to hear that things that I have seen work out of the box for years with Linux are broken on this laptop. Namely the touchpad. This only seems to be the case on the 15in model. The 13in is reported to work fine. It's unfortunate the Lenovo fails to realize that people who spend 2k on a laptop tend to be computer enthusiasts, many of whom run Linux.  I can amost guarentee the amount of RMAs they are going to get from this are going to cost more than the few hours it would take 1 or 2 developers to write a touchpad driver for Linux. This is the only convertable on the market with a good GPU so I might still get it and try to either write a driver or get it working through some other means. Has anyone else had any luck with the touchpad or the fingerprint reader on Linux?
