Windows 8.1 restart doesn't function

Q: Windows 8.1 restart doesn't function

I have recently upgraded two of my computers to windows 8.1. The first went fine, but the second hung on restart.  That is to say,
1. I went to the Store
2.  I downloaded 8.1
3.  the computer restarted (shut down ok, but hung on restart, with manufactures screen-couldn't do anything)
4.  After a long wait I manually shutdown and turned the computer on.
5. The installation went fine
6.  Everything works fine
7.  Restart doesn't work
So when I have to restart, for example when installing a program.  I have to shut down and then turn it back on.
If I click restart, it shuts down and then hangs.
I have made no changes to the settings from windows 8.  (I did disable the Hyper V services, as I don't use them and I had to download the english language pack as I live in spain
and windows automatically loaded the spanish keyboard and language for tabs- although I had been using english with windows 8)
I have seen no other problem
I have updated with windows update after installation.
I have a gigbyte motherboard with American megatrends bios SMbios 2.7
I am running legacy,  although this shouldn't make a difference.
I have also changed the power options turning off fast startup- was the only mention of a fix on the internet.  This doens't work.
Any suggestions.

Preferred Solution: Windows 8.1 restart doesn't function

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 8.1 restart doesn't function

Hello.  I found the problem.
NvTmru.exe from nvidia was the problem.
Moved it to delayed startup and no more problems.  fixed the other problem I had with the keyboard and display languages acting funny.
I will move this to the windows 8.1 thread for info purposes.

This happens each time from the start menu. I have let it try to restart for up to 20 minutes. I get the HP logo and maybe 2 1/2 rotations of the "dots" then it freezes. I must power down with the power switch / power up and all is well. I have noticed that the restart will show my wifi indicator lamp illuminated and my volume on/off light will not illuminate during restart. Sequentially, both lamps illuminate when I power up the system. The computer is a new HP 15 which came with Windows 8.1. Not an earth shattering deal however I wish it to go away and ya'll seem to be about the only ones these days who are actually able to resolve issues.
Thank you.

I have about 600 gigs of storage space and windows search doesnít work so Iím a bit frustrated at this problem.

When I run windows search function I get 2-3 recently created files and nothing else. The process of getting these results take less than a second sometimes and it doesnít comb threw my folder structure the way it used to. I have indexing on and Iíve had indexing off but this does not effect the results. Iím not sure when this problem first popped up but I assume it was about 4-5 months ago when my step dad changed my network settings because of some bad advice from some tech support who didnít know what kind of system I had.

Iíve tried using ďWindows Desktop SearchĒ and that didnít work either so I uninstalled that. I donít want to use 3rd party search programs just because the windows search has worked fine for me so far with the exception to this. Any help is appreciated

A:windows xp pro screen saver doesn't function

Hello campus56

1.If you are using an old mouse, try cleaning it.

2. You might have a process running in the background that keeps XP thinking it is busy and so the screen saver won`t start.
Go into msconfig and uncheck everything you don`t need, then see if the screen saver will kick in.

Start/Run and type in

Startup Tab
Keep the page open then go to link below. It will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not

Read the Key at foot of page, then click on "Here" at top. Use the Search box to check all your entries

3. Try this too

Line 51 left hand side. Click on "Disable/Enable"

It could be that something is resetting the timer. It doesn't take very much vibration to move the mouse a little bit and that sets the timer back to zero. Could something like that be a possibility? Or a pet that walks on the keyboard?

Okay forum I am coming to you once again for a little assistance.

Today I went to fire up my desktop and everything loaded quick and fine as usual. But when I went to click on my browser nothing happened. I then proceeded to try and click on my Windows Start button but again nothing happened. Nothing will function at all. The system just freezes and won't do anything.

My system is set up using an SSD for the OS and a RAID0 array for the programs and user files. While I have had issues with CHKDSK pulling the Raid array apart it is now disabled on both the SSD and the Raid array. I tried loading with the install disk and going to a restore point but the only one is from the updates yesterday and the issue still remains. I have also tried the SFC /SCANNOW using the command prompt on the install disk and it found no errors. I'm at a loss here and really don't want to do a fresh install. This thing is a pain to set up.

Thanks all in advance.

A:Windows 7 Opens and looks fine but doesn't function

Okay so I figured it all out. Still not sure why it happened but here's how I fixed it. I rebooted the system and loaded into safe mode. Once in I accessed the hidden system admin, found my user profile and transferred it over to another drive just in case. During the transfer the loader froze so I had to abort with a manual system power down (holding down the D-Day button). Once the system booted up (again into safe mode) I ran CHKDSK again on both drives. Again the results came back negative. However when the system rebooted into normal OPS I had a functional desktop. The only issue being that even though I logged into my profile, once in I got an error. "You have been signed into a temporary profile, etc. etc." Since I at least have some headway I jumped over to the hidden system admin and went to the REGEDIT. I found my User Profile Registry Key, backed it up and deleted it and rebooted. After I rebooted I no longer had this error but none of my saved files, movies or pictures were anywhere to be found. I did however manage to keep my programs installed. But then I got to thinking about that file I tried to back up. I tried to open it and got an error. I tried to delete it and it wouldn't let me. I finaly played it all out and ran CHKDSK again from safe mode on both drives. Lots of errors. After I booted the system up this last time I was able to open the file and low and behold I at least saved my docs and pics. Just transferred everything over and am now back ... Read more

I recently upgraded my 3 computers to Windows 8.1. Only 1 PC (INTEL) is working as it should. The other 2 PC's are AMD based and the search function is acting funny. When I search it gives my the results, but when I click on says I'm looking for DEVICES AND PRINTERS and I search "printers", it gives my the result. If I click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS tab it doesn't respond, but when I click on say my Canon printer's link to MY PRINTER it responds. I ran SFC/SCANNOW and also DISM (Micorsoft actually ran it) and nothing changed. It sometimes locks me onto the Meto screen and I have to reset the PC to get back to my normal Desktop. When it does that non of the Metro tiles works. Micorsoft technician also tried to create a new user account which comes out blank and when creating another account, as soon as you log into the account it immediately signs out of it and don't allow you access. I tried to refresh the pc, but the frustrating part is, it asks you to choose a keyboard layout, but disables all USB and PS ports. Now how do I choose a keyboard layout, unless I have a touch screen. Microsoft really didn't think this trough. Is there anybody that perhaps now how to get the searh to work. Oh I do have searchindex.exe in my system32 folder and in services I stop and restarted Windows Search, but still no change.

A:Search function in Windows 8.1 doesn't work as it should

Problem solved. After Microsoft technicians tried everything and my PC crashed I decided to just redo. Then I found out that a program called Wisecare 365 that I was running on my Windows 8 PC caused all the problems. It went and deleted registry and other files that windows 8.1 need to operate with. So it's no longer on my PC and so far Windows 8.1 is running fine.

INITIAL ISSUE: Could not bootLast week, I tried to dual-boot install Fedora Linux onto my Windows 8.1 PC (Asus CM1435 Desktop). I resized the Data Partition (not OS partition) by 100GB. I then restarted the PC, and Fedora seemed to work okay, however, I could not got Windows to start anymore. I then turned on Secure Boot and other Windows 8-optimized settings and tried to start up again; it did not work, Windows could not boot. I tried to search up some details on how to fix this problem, and I came across bcdboot and bootrec commands, and ran them (/fixmbr, /fixboot, /rebuildbcd), however, there was no luck, as /rebuildbcd gave me a 0 disks found error. I also followed the instructions here (https://neosmart.net/wiki/recovering...ws-bootloader/). At this point, "Windows Bootloader" disappeared from the BIOS. Restarting resulted in a "Missing Operating System" error.I tried using a Windows 8 installation disk, and tried Reset and Refresh, but neither worked. Reset gave me "Recovery Partition could not be found" (was still there, just got messed up in the resize or something), and Refresh gave me "Disk where windows is located is locked" (perhaps from fast reboot?)Then, I gave up all hope on the current installation. I booted into my Windows 8 recovery disk, formatted C:, and installed it from there. When it got to "Windows needs to restart to continue", restarting put me to "Missing operating system", and I could not continue the installation. I tried it again, (formatte... Read more

Hi all and thanks for your time,I'm having a problem with my install of Windows 8. Whenever I alter any system settings Windows does not remember them after the machine is restarted. Some examples: - Any settings specified in MsConfig such as Services to run or ignore at startup.- Any Services in Services.msc that I set to Auto/Manual/Disabled.- DNS Configurations in the applet accessed by right-clicking on my WiFi/Ethernet connection in Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Adapter Settings. That's to name only a few.I have been repeatedly running SFC / Scannow. It claims to detect corruption and to have fixed the problem, but after a restart and running SFC again it gives the exact same message no matter how many times it's run.Could anyone here give some insight as to the possible route cause of these problems, or any methods to detect what aspect of Windows is faulty?Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

A:Windows doesn't remember system settings after restart.

Something is most likely wrong with the system memory. I would recommend that you run the BIOS and do the memory test until it is done so that you can see what it finds. I have found that that helps a long time ago. I would try that if that does not work, then HOLD the SHIFT KEY and click on the SHUT DOWN on the CTRL+ALT+DELETE screen. A blue screen should show up after a minute or 2 and give you options. CLICK on ADVANCED and CLICK SYSTEM RESTORE

Hi everyone. My Windows Vista Home Premium computer does not want to restart half the time. What I mean is that it won't restart by going through the start menu and clicking on restart. Instead, I'll have to press the power button and hold it in for like 5 seconds and then it will shut down. Then I have to press the power button again to turn it back on. What can I do to fix this? By the way, I'm running service pack 2 on my Vista computer.

A:Windows Vista doesn't want to restart half the time

Recommended approach would be to always let it close down itself even though it may take a long time.
Spend some time trying to analyse what is causing the slow shut down when it does occur - try Task manager but make sure when you look at the Processes you tick the box at the bottom wich says "Show processes from all users".

Yesterday I downloaded three windows updates from the prompt and ever since haven't been able to get the laptop to shutdown, hibernate or restart. I even tried to force shutdown by pressing down the power button, but nothing happened. Then I let the battery drain, hoping after I switch it on after plugging it, it would be fine. The laptop resumed and again refused to shutdown. I browsed the HP Support website and it recommended a BIOS update. The BIOS update requires the model & serial number of the laptop, which I couldn't find anywhere (there's no sticker carrying product info on the back), so the info might be found behind the battery compartment or the battery. I do not know if it's safe to extract the battery with this issue lingering. How do I proceed? Is there an alternate way to know what, in the name of God, is going on?
And also the window "Restart your computer to finish installing important updates" keeps cropping up and nothing happens when I click the 'Restart Now' option.

Hey all,
New HP dv7 with the 2740 i7 and a 840 Pro SSD. Incredibly fast for a laptop, I was amazed. BUT, on restarts like if you have an update and you select restart, it reboots so fast the wifi won't reconnect automatically every time and noticed that if I have a minor drive error and shedule a disk check and restart , it says it is going to disk check then skips the check and I do not touch any key.
The machine was running great even with the error and in order to get disk check to run I have to shut it down and start it up manually and it will connect the wifi and do a disk check if scheduled.
Something is up with the restart function and I am thinking that this thing boots so fast that things are not working the way they should. I am talking like about 5-7 seconds to boot.
Anyone else notice a problem with restarts? I thought I had the wifi issue solved but I don't. No big deal on that.
As long as I stick to normal shut downs and start ups everything is fine. No drive errors.

A:restart function does not work well

On the wifi connect issue I figure out Windows 8 for whatever reason with the Intel Centrino wireless adapter does NOT like the router WPA2-PSK security setting whereas my Win 7 machine and another machine have no problem with it. I'll be darned. I notice Intel just came out with another driver for it so I will give it a whirl.

Sorry that my first post is an SOS but this issue is a bother. The problem is that since I re-installed Windows 7 on top of my previous 7 installation that wouldn't boot due to moving it to a my custom build, I had noticed that even after calculating the Experience Index, which I scored a 4.6, Aero themes would not function unless I restarted. The sounds and backgrounds would change, but the taskbar and window borders would remain basic. I ran the troubleshooter and while it's diagnosing, Aero briefly comes on and then disables itself again. The issue found is the same thing every time I run the troubleshooter, "The Desktop Window Manager is disabled". It says it enabled the DWM, but Aero themes still don't work and sometimes every one of them says it can't be applied after running the troubleshooter. Before running it however, I checked Services and DWM is both started and set to auto start. I have made screenshots of my findings as well if that clarifies anything. Aero is just a luxury item but any help to fix this is greatly appreciated. If you need any additional info I can provide it. (Side note: I had a Dell machine that I installed 7 onto and upon first boot, Aero was already enabled w/o a WEI score calculated yet. Is this normal? Never experienced Aero problems on it) I apologize for the length of this post. Thank you in advance.

How do I stop this from happening!??!?! it's so annoying!!!

A:have to restart PC everytime i plug in a usb device for it to function

Your pc needs Jesus in his life...
Just kidding. Actually what it desperately needs is a fresh Windows installation. To make sure you don't loose any 3rd party applications try the repair option first - start the installation from Windows itself to get the repair option.
If you really desperately need to keep Windows as it is, then you can try inserting it's installation disk and in the "run" menu from the start menu use the "sfc /scannow" command. You must type it exactly this way for it to work, and it may take as much as 30 minutes depending on the state of your Windows and pc performance.

At first I could deal with not being able to run Windows Messenger Live (well not my sister anyway, since she was the one with the issue on her login), but now I can't seem able to use the 7.5 version.

When it is run, I find it rather difficult to interact with the program. I only bet on knowing that the text will appear soon enough, that my email will be typed in. When I make mistakes entering it, it takes rather long to fix it. It is sort of like writing a letter and then finally looking down at it to see what you have written. Even putting the cursor over the program makes it disappear (but it functions like it is there).
Anything past that, and I get issues just signing in, in a matter of a second. So that means it can't be a firewall (I use ZoneAlarm), because I have checked through that. Anyway, you get the resulting attachments 01 and 02. On the second one is where I am sort of confused. I tried using Repair, but that did nothing since I can do that a million times, and that would make no change. Something must be wrong with the host file. Somewhere along the lines I got what is now in the text file.

I have tried reinstalling the program (even from a new downloaded file), but that doesn't work. Also is a new .NET update on the computer something to think about? This happened a good while after I had it installed.

So how can I resolve this issue?

I have a computer in the lounge which doesn't have an internet connection so the specs on my profile do NOT match the computer in question.

Basically, the computer has an AMD 6 Core processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory a single harddrive and a dvd drive, if I go into the bios and then choose save and exit on normal computer it saves and restarts but this one saves and powers down and then does nothing which pretty much rules out the operating system being the problem.

If I turn the computer off and then tell it to restart it will turn off but it doesn't start back up...

What could be the problem and how can I test/check the system to see whats the matter?

Any ideas would be much appreciated
- Ryan

Is there a bios update available?

Have you tried updating it?

Is there any service required to run in the startup for it to work ??

Coz I have turned off many services , but that was a long time ago, this started happening recently

A:Search function doesn't work now

Have you checked to see if the search function works in SafeMode?

Have you installed any updates to the current software like your AV program for instance?

Anyway, the first thing I'd try would be to run SFC from a command prompt within Windows XP and see what happens

sfc /scannow

BTW, in reference to the services, I doubt that's an issue. Windows XP will start a service if it's needed, regardless of whether you've disabled it.

When I go to "search" I get the basic box but it is empty. There are no options within the box. What files make up this function? If I can pinpoint what is missing I think I can get it working again.

I search by hitting Programs, then search. Win XP 1 gig ram, 250 gb HD etc. I think a malware program deleted a file thinking it was bad.

Hello Bill

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder.
Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder.

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders.
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View
Check ?Show hidden Files?
Uncheck ?Hide protected system files?

You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start Ė Run Ė type in msconfig Ė click OK and click on the Startup tab. Put a check mark beside everything you see listed there and then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I'm not certain if I'm posting this in the correct forum. Hope so. Very weird problem and have spent 2 days trying to work it out.
I have the Adobe Flash Player ... I have BBC and ITV Player.

A week ago we were able to go to ITV-1, and watch two episodes of an outstanding show called Downton Abbey. This is 24 hours after broadcast and is a catch up service. No problem. But suddenly, when trying to get the third episode, nothing.
It just will not open. Called ITV who suggested that perhaps I should uninstall and then reinstall Adobe Flash. I did. Still no joy. Cleared cache and history and all the things we're always told to do on a regular basis. Defragged ... cleared disk ...
even did a restore to another date. Nothing worked. So I'm stumped. I have broadband and oh by the way ... I see below that it says under system info that my AV isn't updated. Well, it sure is.
Sorry to be long winded but don't know another way to explain the problem here. The site and show in question play on other people's PCs, so the problem has to be here in mine. Funny thing tho, I can still get BBC-TV, no problem.

Any ideas out there?

I recently installed new hard-drives, 1 master and 1 slave. I still have all of my data from the new drive transfer, I can install and run programs on my new drive, but some of existing applications aren't working properly.

The most critical is my problem with " System Restore". Everytime I run System Restore from the Start Menu > Accessories > ... , I get the pop up for debugging it. The pop up is the grey box that says "Send Error Report or Don't Send". While it was working I used it everyday, but now it always crashes when I open it up. What happens if something bad happens to my PC, how will I be able to restore my PC to an earlier secure stage? Please help me, it's critical that I get use of my System Restore back again. Do I have to reinstall WinXP again or what?

Microsoft Word keeps telling me to "repair" the program everytime I open up a word document. Now, I'm able to open up a word document, read it, edit and save. But when I open them up it also talks about the repair, a "Windows Installer" box pops up, then disappears, afterwards telling me to reinstall\repair Word 10.0 or something like that because there's an error in Microsoft Office. Should I reinstall\repair my Microsoft Office CDs?

I'm copying folder A on external drive E to folder B on external drive K. Folder B is an older copy of folder A which I now want to update so that I have an identical copy of folder A on drive K. I'm calling the copy of folder A on drive K "folder B" just for simplicity. Folder A is 27 gigabytes, 121 folders, 4,000 files.

When I copy A to B the system copies just the new files and after awhile tells me that there are copies of the remaining files already in folder B so I click on cancel or skip remaining files. Then just to be sure I copy folder B back to folder A and it finds a couple hundred files that it says are not in folder A so it adds them then tells me the rest are already in A. So next I just want to be really sure they are both the same so copy folder A back to folder B again, but it starts copying another hundred files from A to B.

I have done this back and forth thing over 20 times till I got completely bored doing it and every single time it copys more files from B to A, then more files from A to B, then more files from B to A, then more files from A to B and on and on. If I look at the properties of both A and B they are identical, same number of bytes, files and folders. But the copy process never sees that they are identical. It will forever think there are some files in A that are not in B and that there are some files in B that are not in A no matter how many times I do this cross copying.

I realize I can just check properties earlier and l... Read more

I've searched for this and found a couple of similar threads around Wireless Networking but they don't quite match the problems I'm having.

I have a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows XP. I've had the machine for about 18 months now and have had no problems connecting to my wireless router. I have always been able to detect 4 or 5 local networks as well as my own.

About 3 months ago I was prompted to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to IE7 and (foolishly) did so. This caused huge problems and eventually I had to reverse the procedure using Norton Go Back - this was largely successful although I still seem to get a couple of error messages on start up that weren't there previously. One thing that the unscrambling exercise did not fix, however, was the wireless connection which has never worked since.

The problem manifestation is simple: when I double click the wireless icon on the task bar it tells me that "No wireless networks were found in range. Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on". Despite making various attempts at overcoming this, including re-installing the router software, I have made no progress.

Picking-up from the previous threads, I have checked the contents of my Start Up folder - nothing at all in there. Also, I have looked at Wireless Zero Configuration and this shows as 'Started' and start up type 'Automatic'.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

This is quite a weird problem and it started when I replaced Firefox 3.6 with Firefox 4 (as in uninstall Firefox and install Firefox 4).
Everytime I am browing now Firefox 4 doesn't function properly in the taskbar. I made a screenshot of it which shows the problem much better.
As you can see Chrome and Foobar2000 are function properly and the way I want it, but Firefox 4 doesn't. It show the open browser and the icon to start another Firefox window and that's not how I want it.
Could anyone help me with this small problem?

I'm not having any problems with FF. I'm using RC1 version... Click on that icon and remove it from taskbar. After that click with right click on firefox icon(that you browse) and select Pin to Taskbar.
