Pc locking up,graphical corruption,audio corruption

Q: Pc locking up,graphical corruption,audio corruption

Up untill today my PC has been working a-ok. I first encountered the problem when i was palying a online mmo. After a couple of hours playing i entered a world and some graphical corruption occured where green pixels seem to appear in bands where the lighter colours where. After a short while the pc locked up,with loads of green pixels appearing and the last split second of sound caught in a loop.Nothing worked, mouse keyboard, even the lights for numlock, scroll lock and capslock did not respond to the keys being pressed.it has happened almost every time i tried a game since then.

I rebooted my pc and it was fine untill i was loging into the pc,where more of the same graphical corruption occured, when i logged in after a short while the pc froze on my desktop and hr monitor lost signal.after a few seconds it came back on an a message appeqred in the corner by the toolbar saying Kernel driver 258.96 had failed but had been recovered, his happened a few times. Windows works perfect in safe mode and i updated the graphics card drivers to try and resolve this but it did not work,i am posting this off my iPod so pardon the bad spelling, will upload a picture or video tomorrow wih more info if needed.
Runnng on a packard bell iXtreme with a quad core cpu and Nvidia 8400GS grqphics card. Hope somebody has a solution .thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So I finally converted to windows 10. Damn you Microsoft and your bs tactics. >,< After about a week I had just gotten everything installed and tweaked to my liking. For days all was well, until yesterday when I booted my computer to find all three monitors displaying this.

I immediately thought "BOOM there goes my graphics card!". But then I remembered seeing the uefi bios screen and the windows boot logo clearly so I figured it has got to be a software issue. I think windows loads fine, the display is just corrupted. I can kinda see the mouse moving around and my start menu pops up, hell I even ran sfc on the command line without being able to see it. I'd like to determine what's causing this and fix it so I don't have to re-install or at least so it doesn't happen again after.

My first thought was, okay what changed since yesterday? The first thing that came to mind was that I had run Ccleaner with CcEnhancer's custom rules. [check the attached images] I may have had a few more things checked at the time. Maybe I deleted something I shouldn't have. I didn't know how i'd go about fixing that so I started think of what else it may be. I had installed uxStyle to enable custom themes a couple days ago. I've heard that can be glitchy. I also figured maybe it's a driver issue or and overclocking issue. I tried to boot into safe mode several times but it didn't work. It just showed a white screen for 2 secon... Read more

I'm playing Doom3, after doing a little work on the data files (I will provide the link to what I did if it's needed), to get optimum performance with my ATI Radeon 9200 (256mb).
All the drivers for it are updated and I'm using Direct X 9.0c, so it's not a driver problem.

My problem is this:
When I run the game on High Detail at any resolution, I get some strange graphical corruption with the models, but I'm not getting any slowdown. An exact half of them is covered in shadow, and the other half isn't. They're not properly textured either. However, when I run it at the same resolutions in Medium Detail, none of the graphical corruption is there...

Could there be any reason for this, or do I have to suffice with running the game on Medium?

My Specs are:
Intel P4 3.0 Ghz
Intel D864PERL Motherboard
ATI Radeon 9200 Pro 256mb

I recently bought an XFX Geforce 6800 GT and when i run some games on it with any driver version prior to 61.77 i get strange graphical corruption. It is weird lines sticking out of objects, mostly clear lines, sometimes brown triangles, always attached to some in game object. I have noticed it mostly in Splinter Cell Chaos theory, as it is always present in this game. I saw it once when playing half-life 2 but, have seen it again. Chronicles of riddick works perfectly no matter what drivers i use. There is no dots or anything, and my card is not overheating, it has never gotten above 68 degrees to my knowledge. I have a 460 watt psu and the card is on its own cord, well, except for my floppy drive. Also, with newer drivers, video playback in windows media player is extremely faded and washed out, everything being near white. The card is brand new, so i wouldn't imagine it is broken... Anyway, if i downgrade to 61.77 or lower drivers the problem disappears entirely in Chaos Theory, and i haven't seen it again in HL2. On a final note, when i was installing the initial drivers after putting the card it it prompted me to located moniter drivers to install, which i cancelled because there are no newer moniter drivers for my POS moniter. Anyway, Thank you for the help!

A:Graphical Corruption with 6800 GT

I had the exact same problem recently with the exact same card. However, people told me it was my power supply. (460 watts should be fine for you tho) I never did end up changing my power supply. I upgraded to the latest drivers (which strangly enough were not on the nvidia site but on www.fileplanet.com). The problem still persisted for about a week. Finally, I just tried removing the card and placing it back in to make sure it was connected properly. After that, the problem just seemed to go away. So, I would try just taking the card out, then plugging it back in. Make sure that everything is connected properly...that sort of thing. And if it doesn't work the first time, try try again. I would say that if after four or five times of doing that, that the problem is with the slot itself and you might need a new motherboard.

I've been having a problem with my computer for several months now (since April), and I don't know what else I could try to fix it.

Originally, my problem was that the fan on my Nvidia 9500GT broke and I needed a new card. So I purchased an Nvidia 9800 GTX+ (Axle: http://www.axle3d.com/eng/productspec.php?id=105). I mainly play World of Warcraft and the problem occurred while playing. My screen will freeze up for up to 30 seconds, I won’t be able to hear anything, then when my computer comes back, either there is graphical corruption (as shown in the images below) or the driver stops working properly (nv4_disp.dll stops working properly and the resolution and colors are low and I need to reboot).

I sent this card back and got a replacement thinking it was just the card. Same identical problem occurred. I sent it back again and got an Nvidia 9800 GT (MSI: http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=136&cat3_no=&prod_no=1873). The same problem has been occurring ever since.

Now with 3 cards tried, I contacted Nvidia and asked them what could be wrong. They boldly stated within the first 5 minutes that something must be wrong with the Motherboard (Intel: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/dsktpboards/dg31pr).

Pursuing this, I contacted Intel and told them that there must be a problem with the board. They asked me to send in the board and that they would replace it. Got the new board, still the same problem.

Hello,

First, here's some history:

I had a Radeon 9700 Pro which crapped out while under warranty. I RMA'd it to receive, surprise, a Radeon 9800 Pro. The 9700 worked flawlessly until it's death, but this 9800 has been giving me some problems.

Since installing the 9800 Pro, I've had graphical corruption and artifacting in some of the games I play while others work perfectly. The corruption appears differently in all the games, but usually shows up as some kind of random black flash on textures. I was convinced that these were a result of bad drivers/registry entries left from the 9700, but I recently reformatted to find that I still have the problem.

Here is a list of games that I'm having trouble with:

-Battlefield 2 - Black flashes on textures and some crazy things going on with static models like buildings, the weapon, etc.
-GTA San Andreas - CJ and all of the characters randomly emit little polygons and look like they're breaking apart, yet textures, buildings, and everything else are perfect
-Doom III - Black flashes all over textures

From this, I would assume that I was experiencing some overheating issues, however the following games work like a charm:

-Battlefield Vietnam
-GTA 3/GTA Vice City
-Quake 3
-Half-Life 2/Counterstrike Source
-UT2004

I have plenty more games that I could try, but I think you get the picture.

Here's a list of things I've tried-

-Reformatting
-A vast array of drivers from 2.x and on
-Updated nF... Read more

I am using the 174 nvidia drivers, here are my specs:-

It says "not connected" but the button that says "connect" or "disconnect" says disconnect, obviously what it says when im connected to a network. I try and view a webpage and it says it can't be displayed. I reinstalled my card and double-checked it, its good, but then I went to the device manager and there is my driver, Xircom MPCI Modem 56. It has a little yellow exclimation point on it. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, I went to Gateway.com and got 2 different versions, both for WinXP (tried them independently before having both on, so it isn't conflicting) and it says:
"Cannot Install this Hardware
There was a problem installing the device
Xircom MPCI Modem 56

At this point I have my eye on the wireless card (Rosewill RNX-G300EX PCI card). My thought is that (either through driver or hw fault) its causing some corruption in downloaded files, namely system updates. I also regularly get errors trying to open zip and executable files.

A:zip corruption

Welcome Paigeypar to the windows 7 forums.

There is the possibility that the .psd files that you created are not compatible with the intel version of photoshop.
or, your zip program is only zipping up the fork files and not the data files. Not being a mac person, I do remember from my mac days that the mac uses two files to make a pair, one being the resource fork and one being the data fork. Most pc's ignore the resource fork and only use the data fork.

Hope this helps

i did get blusscreen once and it had the following information.

They said they were using malwarebytes antimalware, so I did a quickscan to reporduce the results of the crash to get more info.

1hr 30min later the scan was in the Huiristics portion of the scan.

You are headed in the right direction
0x24 indictes the NTFS file system and chkdsk /r should help.

I dont suppose that you can get to a command prompt?

As long as the bios is set to boot from the cd
I would try a few more times.
I have seen it take 6-7 tries before it will "hook up"

If the computer supports booting from a usb device that would be good.
If not you may need to hook it to your laptop to run chkdsk.

So heres the rap,

i have used the same install of windows XP for around 2-3 years without a format. ive updated all pc components in that time but kept the same install. of course i used all the relative driver cleaners before hand to reduce any clashes. I always kept the system clean and virus/ spyware free. never missed a beat until...

A few days ago i left my computer on all day whilst at work only to come home to a moniter screen which displayed 'no signal detected' so decided to reset it. then windows loading screen came on and near the end of the loading phase BSOD. i decided to boot in every other mode all followed with BSOD. i have never come across this before in my experience. I am very desperate to recover a few files within my documents including uni work and photos amounst other things <1gb in total id say.

to rule out hardware failure i tried booting it with another computer but BSOD still follows. it must be a software issue. or perhaps the hard drive it self?

i also threw the HDD in an external hard drive box and tried to load it as a mass storage device it does show up however i cant access it because it says it needs to be formatted. also windows displays the drive as empty instead of partially full which it should be.

any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
im sure this comes up alot but it does teach a valuable lesson to back up!

thanks,

A:HDD corruption

Hello Kimbo
I would suggest that you d/l the tools from the website of the company that made your drive.
Most major drive manufacturers offer such tools.
Some are great... and highly recommended.
Not all are fully compatible with hardware from other makers.
SeaTools may be useful across makers, but I cannot say that it may be used with all.
That is why I suggest going to the maker of your drive.
(When I changed drives, I found that the WD utility was better for my new WD drive, and the Toshiba utility better for the old drive).
Again, YMMV.

Run both S.M.A.R.T. and Long tests, especially the Long.
This will let you know if the drive is bad, and (hopefully) whether anything can be recovered.

I'm just looking for a second "fresh pair of eyes" to comment or suggest a fix for a dilemma I'm having with my WIN XP PRO system. I'm working with a mS MVP on another board, but it's going stale and I'd thought I toss this over here and see if anybody has a suggestion. Approximately 3 weeks ago, when i started Internet Explorer this error message came up: In the above example, substitute sys restore, help center, sys info, management console etc To cut to the chase, as I tried to solve this error, it turns out several of the windows components return this error also even in safe mode, thus ruling out using system restore. sys restore is dead, sys info is dead, mmc, helpctr etc.. However, the computer works with my Corel Draw! program, the internet works with mozilla or Firefox. Things I've done is uninstalled add ons in Internet Explorer, dumped adobe, corel draw, ran hijackthis and run virus scans.. Here's a funny thing: Windows hot fix and security updates come on down the line and install no problem. But when you try to run sys restore you get that "* has encountered a prob and needs to close..." And of course Dr Watson has the same prob If there is an expert who wants to see the total history, here's the link:http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=23623 Nothing against Walter, just thought I'd ask if there is a fresh pair of eyes who might have a different opinion thanks all!!

fresh install of OS(Windows Vista) installed on 80 GB HD, and one of my 400 GB hard drives has crashed
what happened is that while i was downloading a file though firefox, firefox froze and could not be shut down(by task manager and by right clicking - close, and various other ways of trying to shut down the program) , so i reset the computer thought the start menu, now after a full re-install of the OS (vista ultimate) i have no access to the hard drive that has very super ulta important information, i've had a bad experience with data recovery programs that i still lost everything anyways, so i'm wondering if there is a way to rebuild the MFT with a free program so then i can access the hard drive in a whole, just like it was before the MFT got corrupt

the only things that were installed in the new OS were firefox, avast, and the raid drivers(that the crashed 400GB drive is NOT connected to)

When I attach my DOK to the USB ports on my computer I get an error nessage that there is an increase in electrical flow followed by a message that the newly attached is not working properly. Tried detaching the DOK and retrying, tried it from all USB ports, tried removing alll the USB drivers from the device manager and have tried reboot - none of them work.

I don't think this is a hijacker problem but i read in the forums that you guys really know how to read these to help determine all kinds of problems.. windows xp sp2 is so screwy that i can't run a lot of apps, others run perfectly. windows media player reports corruption or non-compatible file extensions in about half of my mp3 files, all of which have been perfect up until recently. Other failing apps include: personal firewall plus-asks for disk to access functions menu?; virusscan 8.0-part of active shield not installed?; encarta 2004 will go through opening screen and then close. the list goes on. I am new to this forum and have a new computer and a new W7 pro 64bit
When I initially turn on computer the screen displays an illustrated information title of the gigabyte mother board,, then goes to a black screen with white lettering that flashes on briefly and appears to list the components of the system.
Why I believe there could be some corruption is that a flight sim game Rise of Flight is refusing to load. When i go to the start it tells me -"connection to master server was temporaily lost. check internet connections" All other sites are working. This change in Windows display occurred about the same time access to the game was denied which is why I I feel some problem has arisen within W7

A:possible corruption of W7?

Do you initially see something like this:

Then (or now) something like this:

?

The 1st is Gigabytes Splash screen. The 2nd is the BIOS screen. Usually, if you disable the splash screen, you will see the BIOS loading screen (which I prefer).

For me it was either/or, are you saying you now see one, and then the other? I won't be able to test it, but it's possible the BIOS is taking longer to load now and so the splash screen ends before the BIOS screen (which loads "behind " it) is finished. Does the boot take longer now? Perhaps the BIOS is hanging while your PC searched for a device? You could have a device (HDD, Optical drive) issue.

If not, this may just be a coincidence and you just need to troubleshoot your game issue. I don't think the OS itself is "corrupted". Have a look here and see if you don't find some help:

Rise Of Flight Blog

You may find your answer or an update to correct this. Looks like you must have a connection to server to play.

so where to start, well first of all i need to know how to repair a corrupted version of windows 7. I have two hard drives atm one with windows 7 working and one with the corrupted version on it. The main issue here is when my friend was fixing my computer he didnt format the hard drive with win 7 on it properly and i now have about 500mb's if im lucky on that hard drive. So id like to know how do i go about fixing the other hard drive with the corrupted windows 7 on it and no i cant reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows on it since he lost the disk briefly after doing so and it may not have been all that legal.

In the end of it all id like to get windows 10, how i figured about doing this was to get my old hard drive working with win 7 on it, boot up using that then install win 10 on it since it would have enough space to get the files which my current one cant.

If anyone else knows a better way of eventually getting windows 10 as my os without all this trouble that would amazing, i just want a hd with space on it

uhh i dont know what other information to give, i'm fairly certain its the windows files that are corrupted since i can still run my old games from it and not the hard drive.

tl;dr win 7 corrupted, got new hd with win 7, didnt format correctly, ****, want win 10 but not enough hd space, help get meh win 10 somehow by fixing corrupted hd or black magic

ill be out for the next two hours kinda bad time to post this but oh well

A:help with win 7 corruption / win 10

Format the drive, and PURCHASE a legal copy of Win7.

Re: Dell XPS, 2 gb ram, 160 gb hd, Intel Pentium 4A 3200 mz chip, running XP Pro SP2. I am having a series of problem that may or may not be related and would appreciate any help on these you can give.

First, The computer will not respond to keyboard commands in the boot source menu. But, the keyboard works fine once windows is running. I tried a USB board and the standard keyboard port; got the same result with both.

Second, the update download notification shield, microsoft puts in on the task bar while downloading, never gets beyond 9%. Auto update is turned on and my fire wall, sygate, has never gotten in the way before.

Third, the internet connection service that can be turned on or off in the Services window, is not there, neither is there a network icon in the Network Connections window. But, my satellite connection to hughes.net is running fine and my Belkin router is sending strong signals to my router.

Fourth, System Restore will not restore to a prior configuration whether it is one saved 20 minutes before or ten days earlier.

I think I may have a virus, but I'm not really sure how to go about checking it. My computer has recently only been starting up on every other attempt-- otherwise it just goes to black screen with a little blinking underscore line in the top left corner and my mouse is inactive (sorry this is kind of hard to describe). But once I turn my computer off and start it up again everything is fine. Also, I can no longer start up Windows Media Player-- everytime I try to it is no longer responding. VLC though works fine. I ran an avast scan earlier and nothing really came up, but I obviously don't want things to get worse, and I don't want to have to wipe my hard drive.

While playing audio, using either WMP or MPC, the system may hang, with a reboot the only option.
This can occur after just minutes, or hours.

It's then evident that the NTFS is corrupt on both the SATA drive (Win 8) and an SSD drive (W7) - all partitions. CHKDSK /f fires up.

Otherwise the O/S runs as well as one might expect for a beta. Event viewer gives no clue to the problem.
The processor is a capable 2600K, latest drivers. W7, using exactly the same soft/hardware is problem free.

Hey, you can run the tool in the top most thread of this subforum then post the zip here. I'll likely find the cause even though there were no bsods.

If you have 3rd party antivirus (*cough* *cough* Norton/Symantec) or any others - they very often throw NTFS errors when there is nothing wrong with the disk(s). I would definitely uninstall any 3rd party security software in safe mode with the special tool for the specific product to do so.

If antivirus is not to blame (meaning, if you have no 3rd party ones) then see fafhrd's explanations here about chkdsk:

My partner has been happily using her computer for the last four years without problems.
However, recently the system seems to have suddenly got corrupted.
When the login box appears, the password box suddenly fills itself up with characters preventing login. When we delete the characters, they simply re-appear.

With some difficultly we can sometimes logon but get simliar problems with other dialogue boxes - for example: Clicking start makes the "run" box appear, which again fills itself up with characters.
We have not put any new programmes on the computer for several months and we have the AVG free virus protection programme installed.

The O/S is Windows XP home edition with latest updates.
The computer is an HP a708.uk

Hey everyone, I've got an issue with an old school laptop running XP Pro x86 SP3. It's a Dell (I know...) Latitude E5400.

It used to run perfectly fine, but one day I was removing some of the useless outdated programs my school had installed on it, and everything went FUBAR.

Booting the laptop doesn't take much time, but after clicking on my username, and getting my desktop wallpaper shown, things stop loading. I see my wallpaper, but icons don't load up until about five minutes later, with the taskbar. The icons don't have graphics either, until much later.

When everything finally loads, I can't do a single task without it freezing for another five minutes. Clicking on the start button, everything freezes. Right clicking on anything, it freezes. I'm able to navigate around for about 20 seconds smoothly, and then it becomes frozen. Even the clock stops at the minute it freezes.

I've got no startup items, I've only got 28 processes running after boot, I've ran a diskcheck, Microsoft installer cleanup utility, Advanced System Care Pro, CCleaner, Registry Mechanic, Malwarebytes scan, defrag , and disabled all visual themes. I also have over half of my harddrive space free, and I've tried deleting and creating a new user account.

Booting into safe mode is a temporary fix.

So can you guys help me out?

I have windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit with Media Center, etc. Lately I have been converting some videos to h.264 mp4 and noticed something strange. Some of my mp4 files that played fine previously suddenly stopped playing. After checking things out I
noticed that the ones that stopped playing have recent modified dates and are all over 4GB. I think some background process is adding metadata of some kind and corrupting the ones over 4GB. The modified dates seems to be like every 20-30 minutes
one file to the next. The mp4 files below 4GB are still fine (even though they have more recent modified dates). The ones over 4GB are all trash now. I did recently back these up and move them to a new folder watched by media center. I also may have played
them in media player. Anybody know of any process that automatically modifies mp4 files?

A:mp4 file corruption

I figured out how to repair the video files. Figured I'd post in case this happens to someone else
1. using a hex editor Find the "Xtra" atom (search for characters Xtra). Move to 4 bytes before this to get size of this atom and mark the Starting CUT Position. I see 00 00 00 A3 which in decimal is 163. We have to remove the 163 byte Xtra atom which includes
the 4 byte size before it's 4 byte Xtra name. So from Starting CUT Postion move out to the byte just before the 4 bytes size before the "mdat" atom. For large files the size before the mdat atom will be 00 00 00 01 becuase it's size is over 4GB. This marks
the ending CUT POSTION. If you count all the bytes you are about to cut, this should amount to 163 the size of the Xtra atom.

Within the Xtra atom we can see the following attributes that where added by windows thus corrupting the file.
WM/EncodingTime
WM/MediaClassSecondaryID
WM/MediaClassPrimaryID
2. Next we need to correct the size of the parent udta atom. Look at the 4 bytes before the udta atom. I see (00 00 01 03) hex which in decimal is 259. Subtract the size of the Xtra atom we just removed 163 giving 96 (00 00 00 60) hex . Paste the 60 hex
in the 4 bytes before the udta atom.
3. Finally we need to correct the size of the parent moov atom. The 4 bytes before the moov atom are (00 AF E4 1B) hex which is 11527195.
11527195 - 163 = 11527032 (00 AF E3 78)
I still don't know what wrote the Xtra atom but I assume what ever wrote it ... Read more
