Corrupted excel, word & jpeg files

Q: Corrupted excel, word & jpeg files

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. A couple of days ago I tried to open an excel file that I regularly use and when I opened it, all cells were blank except A1. In it was "FileError_22001. I start to investigate and every excel file is the same. Furthermore, all of my word & picture files have the same problem. All my excel files are 18 KB, all my word files are 20 KB. They are all time stamped with the exact same time.

I have McAfee that is provided by my employer but I discovered that it had not been updated in some time for some unknown reason. I called our IT folks yesterday morning and they tried to get me fixed but were unable to and had to pass the ticket up to the next level. They were unable to get the virus stuff working again either.

Whatever I got infected with turned off my McAfee firewall, then started corrupting all of my excel, word and picture files. It did not corrupt any files in my recycle bin. I tired to do a system restore to the day before the problems started but it didn't help. Turns out whatever got loaded probably happened the day before all the bad stuff started happening. So, I unrestored the restore that I did the first time and did a system restore to December 1st instead. It did not help and created more problems for me. I keep getting these pop ups, one after another.

I would attach screen shots of the errors but I can't figure out how to do it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Hi everybody,

I have got a big trouble. Last week I've been infected by a pack of several trojans. As a result, all of my jpeg, pdf, word, excel and video files have been modified/corrupted in such way it cannot be opened.
I think I have get rid of the trojans by using Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Hitman Pro 3.7. These damaged files are not encrypted and there have not  been showed any message asking for money at all.

Well, I am very concerned about my files since I have not made any backup of my system and the trojan disabled the system restore option. I have been able to activate it again but all the restoration points have been deleted and the shadow copies as well.

I've got the three log files generated by the programs described above. Here you are an advance of the trojans founded:

Mbam: Sathurbot, Hijack.SecurityRun, Agent.ED, Tinba
Hitman Pro: Injector, VBKryjetor, Zusy.

Please, help me. I am lost and do not know what to do.

Thanks.

Hello there,This sounds like a ransomware infection. The corruption that you mentioned might indeed be encryption after all.Do your files have any new extensions added onto them? You might want to look around for any ransom notes that the infection might have dropped.Regards,Alex

Last Thursday I reeived an email from a 'Luis [email protected]', which said it was a resume.  As we are accepting resumes right now for a lineman position, I didn't think twice about opening it.  HUGE mistake!  From there I got all sorts of Trojan worms and viruses.  Our local computer fix-it guy got rid of the viruses, took off my Symantec protection that did not protect me, and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes.  He could not, however, get my word, excel, and Adobe to work.  I also had another computer guru do a remote session, and he was unsuccessful.  He used FileHippo and installed Open Office to test files...all to no avail.  Our internet provider said there is no fix.  These files are all corrupted, and my backup is from last year.  Dumb, I know...I will now be backing up weekly.  Can anyone help me recover these files, or is it a lost cause?  I greatly appreciate any advice you can give, so I can finally heal my computer AND my weary mind, or heat up my scanner. Attaching a sample file.   I am just sick...help, please?

Roger, thanks for your reply.  I'm not sure how to find the log of what viruses were removed from my computer.  Also not sure if they were ransomware or not, as I didn't see any message trying to solicit money for the key to uncorrupt the files.  Right now I'm trying a free trial of Excel Recovery from Stellar Phoenix, but it only scans one file at a time.  it's been almost an hour and it hasn't even scanned 1/4 of this small file...and I have no idea whether it will repair a file when (and if) it ever gets done scanning it.  Anyone have any ideas on a cure for this nightmare?

Recently I was trying to upgrade my computer from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional. In the process of doing this I accidentally deleted my partition. I tried to recover my files through a recovery program and I did. Unfortunately though some of my word and excel files were recovered as unknown and these files were corrupted. An example of what the text looks like is: ࡱ > . The word files that I know are only a couple of pages each have this weird text on thousands of pages each. Is there any way to get my files back as they were before? Is there another recovery program I could use to recover all of my files so that they are in their original working condition?

Hi,

I have a large collection of jpg files that I get off my Nikon D-SLR. After transferring them to my hard-drive and resizing using photoshop CS3, I keep them in D:\My Documents\My Pictures . I also e-mailed the pictures to friends. A few weeks later, I go to view the pictures and some of them won't load. In Windows "Picture Viewer" it just spends minutes "Generating Preview" when other not corrupted files are opened within a second. More importantly, when it finally opens the pictures half the photo loads and the rest of the picture is solid gray (what I'm calling corruption). The back-up files (DVD) and copies i've sent to friends do not have this problem. Not sure if it's a virus. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Hi All!
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to repair corrupted JPEG files, such is this example: corrupted JPEG ??
The memory card suddenly stucked in my digital camera, and the only way to recover the data was to use some soft designated for this, but unfornately most of the pictures were corrupted like this.
I have tried various programs to recover datas from card but the result was always the same .
But I know that there is a chance to correct these corrupted JPEG's, as one soft for recovering damaged JPEG recovered some parts of the picture, not the whole - just some fragments, but anyway.
Somehow to change the binary code.....

Any advise will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7 corrupted thousands of my jpeg photos!

I am desperate to restore a few thousand corrupted jpeg photo files. They include many treasured photos from weddings, Christenings, holidays, birthdays, kids activities and so much more.

This is how they became corrupted:

I backed up my desktop hard drive to an external hard drive using Symantec Powerquest Drive Image 7. Later, when I restored my desktop hard drive from the backup, my photos did not restore fully. They werent all corrupted, but probably 95% of them were. The photos show maybe a half, a third or even less of the photo. The rest of the photo is black or grey or otherwise gone or distorted somehow. All thumbnail images are whole and appear to be fine. Drive Image 7 has also appeared to erase the date/time stamp most of the photos also.

I dont know if the photos didnt backup properly or if they just didnt restore properly. I hoped it just didnt restore properly because I still have the backup file and maybe I can still recover. Unfortunately, I think it didnt backup properly to begin with. I only say this because Ive tried several times to restore the backup file using Drive Image in a desperate attempt to recover the entire image but I had no luck doing so.

Ive also tried a few freeware or shareware photo restoration programs on the corrupt files but had no luck yet. One of the programs I tried, JPEG Recovery, did not correct the problem. However a message appeared... Read more

A:Backup utility corrupted my jpeg files. Please offer advice

Unfortunately it seems all the methods you've tried for recovery are corroborating with each other and indicating that the backup was corrupt. Have you tried the PowerQuest Drive Image 7 Backup Image Browser to just open and view individual pictures that you know to be otherwise corrupted?

And what about the original photos? Where they all overwritten by a complete drive image restore or something like that? I ask because if there's any chance they might have been deleted but not overwritten, those might be your best chance with recovery software.

I'm really sorry for your loss if it turns out that way, my Mom has about 6,000 photos and most of them are crap, but it would be really hard to take if about a thousand of them disappeared so I never use any backup program that isn't completely transparent. I know you will never trust Drive Image again but don't trust any backup software that you can't verify the contents of simply by browsing to the backup with windows explorer and opening any file there at any time, and never only make one backup. You need at least two to actually have a backup when one set is lost or destroyed, and one of those two sets should be stored off-site.

I've included a link to a powerful data recovery program http://www.runtime.org/ but in your case it won't do you much good if all it recovers are corrupted or partial images. Good luck.

I was cleaning some old versions of my Internet connection software using Windows Add/Remove Programs, when it seemed to freeze on the uninstallation. After 10 minutes of no progress, I ended the program and rebooted my computer. After restarting, I noticed that all data file icons saved on my desktop were missing, including Excel files, Word documents, and JPGs. The only icons on my desktop were the usual programs and shortcuts (My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc.), as well as all the folders I had saved. But again, the folders were all empty of any data files ? they only had the subdirectory folders, which also were empty. Even sets of folders that go down 3 or 4 levels had no files in them. The best way to explain it is like a tree, with all the branches still in place, down to the twigs, but all of the leaves missing. For example, in the My Pictures directory, I can still see the subdirectories for folders of Baby pictures, Holiday pictures,
Vacation pictures, etc., but all the subfolders are empty as well.

Basically, any data file (XLS, DOC, JPG, AVI, WMV, etc.) saved anywhere on my Desktop is gone. The only data files I still have are saved in C:\ subdirectories, but anything in C:\Windows\Users\Desktop is gone.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking online on various help and tip boards, but haven't seen any problem described which is even close to this. I've checked for any viruses and not found ... Read more

After much troubleshooting, I have come to the conclusion that Outlook 2003 is corrupting .pdf files, jpegs, and Word 2003 documents. The problem is intermittent, i.e. I scan several pages into a .pdf file using our office MFP and email them to myself... Some of the pages I can open, and some give me the error 'not enough data for an image' when I open them with Acrobat Reader. This is a brand new computer... I never had this problem on my old one.

As for Word documents, same issue... Some file attachments I receive thru Outlook 2003 will open fine, others give me the damaged file error message, yet the same files when placed on our network file server I can open without any problems.

Jpegs : Same thing, some open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer without issue, and some open with the message 'Drawing Failed'

I am running Windows XP SP2, all updates and patches installed, Installed Office 2003 SP2 (after MAJOR hassles with Office Update I might add) , and all other critical updates for Office 2003 are installed.

My computer Configuration :
AMD Athlon64 X2 DualCore 4600 2.4GHz
1 GB 400MHz PC3200 CL2 RAM
Dual 250 GB HD (with RAID)
Nvidia GeForce 6800XT 128MB PCI Video

One other thing, the Office 2003 was an upgrade from Office 2000.... don't know if that makes a difference or not but thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide

I recently had a really discouraging problem, where a ton of very special files I'd spent weeks working on, refused to open in either word perfect 8 (in which they'd been created) or ms word from office xp suite. I would either get a message in word perfect about an "unsupported format," or it would try to suggest i open them in ms word 97, and then fail. In word, the doc would open, but be in total gibberish. I tried opening them on different machines, different os's, everything.

I have since been able to recover the original docs from my laptop and I'm ok, but it was scary, to be honest. All that work...anyway, I am wondering what happened, and how to avoid it in the future.

I believe that what may have happened, is that I opened some of the files in both word perfect 8 and ms word, and that somehow this corrupted them. (I don't remember my reason for doing this, but I know I had one at the time.)Are there some guidelines/warnings/issues I should know about in terms of opening docs in multiple applications? Or on different machines (my school computer, home computer, laptop, etc.)?

Also...are there any special conditions that will cause corruption like this to occur, that I should know about?

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

A:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

We spotted hundreds of IDX files in our WORD application and so, silly me, I deleted them.
When I opened WORD DOCS they were corrupted.
There is jibberish on each page and I pannicked cause the files contain College Applications.

Now, I restored the *.IDX files and I thought I had fixed the problem but now the jibberish is back.

WHAT DO I DO? My daughter is pannicking and I'm lost.

There are random charcters all over most of the docs.
There are http references where data from the net was used.

I'm concerned that I screwed up the whole application.

ANY SUGGESTIONS or thoughts????

HELP????

I am using Windows XP.....

A:Corrupted WORD and *.IDX files

Where - exactly- were the IDX files?

IDX is generically an Index file, not sure why they would exist but it depends just where you found them. "In our Word Application" suggests C/Program Files/Microsoft Office/ etc? was this the location?

If you mean they were in the data files area (my documents etc) then thats very different to being in the Word application itself.

Deleting any files from inside an application folder would really be dicing with danger...

Sounds like they could have been indexed links to external information, but if these were indeed such important documents, surely backups have been made?
Remember an even worse situation would occur if the hard drive suddenly failed (and they do, frequently) ... I can assure you from experience (4 in 4 years).

Please advise just where you deleted them from?
What version of Word?

Hi all!
Two days ago I have saved my workbooks on the mapped network drive, but now all files are corrupted. Excel tries to recover the corrupted data everytime I want to open it, but with no success.

I removed all the links to external spreadsheets and read some topics with similar problems, but still have no solution.

So, does anybody have any idea how can I repair it? What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Hi Oliw. Welcome to Windows 7 Forums.

Have you tried to do a System Recovery. Open Control Panel & select Recovery, from there you can select from one of the Recovery times that were before you saved your workbooks to the mapped network drive.

Hi there Technical Guys,

I recently had problems with Windows and had to get clever people to reinstall Vista and in order not to lose all documents etc, I had clever people back everything up on an external hard drive.

This has all worked fine except for Excel files with passwords . The Excel files without passwords open without any problem, however when I try to open a password protected file it states that the file is not in a recognizable format and when I continue to open it, it will look something like:

I am running Word 2000 on Windows ME, and my Word files have turned into a nightmare, for no reason that I can determine.
An example of one of my Word files appears here. Other files are not as bad as this, but they end with a page or so of what appears to be formatting instructions. I have run a full system virus scan, deleted normal.dot, reinstalled Microsoft Word (using the 2000 SR1 disc) and run Select and Repair. None of these have had any effect.
I finally found that changing the file name extensions to .rtf eliminates the garbage, but you can only open a document once as an .rtf, then it reverts to .doc, and the garbage reappears.
I have work to do, and I am at my wit's end.
Can someone help me?

Hi, I had office 2010, but then tried a trial version of Office 2013, as it was running out I downloaded an old version of Office XP back onto my computer but it has corrupted all my word files so that they are all now wordpad files and will not open in word at all. If I try to open them in word I get the message that it is 'not a valid Win32 app'

I have gone back to the trial office 2013 for now, but the problem remains.

Even if I produce a new word doc, it still saves as a wordpad file and will not open with word.

It also does the same for my Excel files. Powerpoint seems to run ok for some reason.

Agggghhhhh! Help!!

Thanks

Hi,

I have encountered this problem which is bugging me for days now.
I was just creating back ups of my files to a different location of my PC (diff. partition, to be exact), the usual copy and paste. After a few minutes, I got this error that says 123.xlsx cannot be copied because the file is missing. I decided to skip it and continue backing up other files. After copying, I tried to locate and open the 123.xlsx file. The file was there but upon opening and after entering the password, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." I have 3 files like this, all of which are password protected. So I'm assuming that the password protection of excel has something to do with it.

I have tried multiple excel recovery tools from google. Even the steps for recovering corrupted files from Microsoft website, none of them worked.

I'm using MS Excel 2013, windows 8.1 64 bit; if it helps.

Please, I'm desperate. The files are equal to months of work. ( I know, I know, i should back up my files more often.)

Best regards,

I was downloading some wallpapers when I encountered a couple with really long filenames and wouldn't open. When I went to delete them, it wouldn't let me and right click doesn't work on them. But it does on all other files.

I tried a random file remover, but it said the name was too long, so I punched the name in manually. It said it removed them, but they're still there. I went into safe mode and same issue occurs.

What are my options? =(

A:Can't Remove Corrupted JPEG

Hah! That was too simple. But maybe this will be handy as an archive.

All I had to do was rename the folder the file was stored in, then the file was able to be removed.

:Edit:
Strange... One was able to be removed, but the other wasn't...

:Edit2:
The second file I was able to delete using a command prompt and using "del C:\dir\file"

Hi everyone. A few weeks ago, I had to format my computer due to a possible virus. Basically whatever infected my computer slowed me down so badly that I couldn't back up anything at all but a few pics. At first I thought that all three pics were unrecoverable because I kept getting an error when trying to move them from the floppy to my hard drive. However, last night I tried to move them individually and it worked. There was one file that couldn't be "moved". However, if I copied and pasted it, it would work. Only one problem, this one file was also corrupted. I messed around for a while and ran Disk Checker and let it fix any errors on the floppy before trying to copy and paste it back to the hard drive again but it did not work. It did change the picture to where instead of only being able to see the top 1/2 inch of the picture, I was able to see the whole thing. Unfortunately, it was still corrupted and kind of messed up looking. It was blue shaded and it looked like part of the picture had been copied and pasted to the side of it.

Now here's the thing that makes me feel like this image might be recoverable. The thumbnail is perfectly fine. It's the image itself that doesn't appear to be working. Is there any possible way to recover this image considering that the thumbnail is still fine? Now, I don't know much about picture recovery but I would think that since the thumbnail is ok then the pic itself is ok as well but the data ha... Read more

Hi,

I have a Sony Mavica Digital Camera (Burns pics directly to mini CD-R/W, no flash memory slots). In an accident some of the film/dye near the outer rim of a CD-R got scratched off. Of course some data was lost, but the inner 2/3 of the CD was not damaged. I used BadCopy (a data recovery program) to recover many of these pictures.

Now I have a folder full of recovered pictures, but every single one is messed up. The thumbnails are fine, but when I open the file, parts of the image are shifted around and colors distorted. For example:

http://68.41.33.79/File35.JPG
http://68.41.33.79/File87.JPG
(sorry for the long downloads, but image info was lost when I tried resized it)

The top 2/3 of each picture was fine, bottom 1/3 seems to be shifted left a little, then the part cut out warps around to the right. Every recovered picture had similar problems.

Any ideas?? Thumbnails are fine for some reason.

Appreciate your help,
-Dan

Hello,

I took VERY IMPORTANT pictures with my new Canon PowerShot SX160 IS using an old, generic 32gb memory card (that I've never had any problems with). While taking pictures last Saturday, suddenly the playback wouldn't work. Got home, popped the memory card in and all the pictures I took were gone.

I ran a recovery program and 1/2 the files came back no problem (THANK GOD). The other 1/2 are corrupted ( ).

I have found several programs out there that run, show me the preview (YEAH, HOPE!!) and then want BIG MONEY to actually recover the files.

My question comes down to this - are there any free programs, what is the best out there to fix/recover these corrupted files?

I have been using Windows 7 for about six months now, and have recently experienced a rather strange event when trying to access my Word and/or Excel documents. When I have opened either of these programs, and clicked on the small yellow file icon at the top to look at the available files, I get the normal list of those files, and can choose which one to open. However, occasionally after clicking the yellow "open" icon, the page is completely blank, that is to say none of my saved files are showing. After a time (usually about five or six minutes), the page loads and I see all these files so that I can then open the required one. If I go to Task Manager, nothing is showing as running, so I am at a loss why this should be. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful for their advice. Many thanks.

Our sister company apparently contracted a worm that changed all of their .doc(x) and .xls(x) files to .exe files. Does anyone here have experience with this worm, and if so what was your solution?

If what I'm reading online is right, this worm is pretty old so I'm not sure how they would get it. I'm also not at that site so the only information I have is what my boss has told me.

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

Well, it appears our desktop has contracted something...Microsoft Office 2010 will not open any files as it states they are all corrupt. First, I've done a lot of searching on the internet and notice others are experiencing the same problem. Some of them are stating they get a screen asking for a ransom, apparently the Cryptolocker virus. We are not getting this message.

I've tried repairing files though a lot of different avenues found on the internet, but none have worked.

I thought possibly the files were being corrupted while attempting to open them, so I copied a few files that I hadn't tried opening to my laptop running the same version of Office, but they appeared corrupted on it as well. I tried running through the repair procedures on this machine and it didn't work either.

Two things: one, do I have some kind of virus on this desktop, and two, has anyone found a way to repair the corrupted files?

Thanks,
Matt
