Strange video issues

Q: Strange video issues

I'm having a few issues, and just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen, or may know what causes it.

First, this could be related, I'm not sure, a few days ago I ran GPUZ and CPUZ, clicking through the tabs and realized my video card was set at Pci-Express x4 1.1. I reseated the card several times, cleaned the pci-e slot, then used my secondary pci-e power connectors, and finally it's running as it should @ x16. I'm not sure how long it was like that, the performance decrease wasn't noticeable. (I'm actually curious if it was just reporting it wrong, because my benchmarks were extremely close; Counter Strike: Source| Video Stress test 216fps at x4, then when I fixed it, 224fps. All settings maxed. This all happened two days ago, and has been fine since fixing it, but..
Now, and this never happened before, and started right after that issue, sometimes when I boot up, if I right click the desktop, and select 'Refresh', the screen go's black for a moment, for about exactly 1 second, not long enough for the monitor to say (no video), but close. Once or twice it did do that though. Once yesterday while browsing this forum, it started, but this time it only did it if I tried to scroll up or down a thread. I minimized my browser, and tried to select refresh at the desktop, to see if it was the same bug, and it did it, I had to restart the machine.
Then just now, today, I booted up, signed into my user, and exactly then, as it said loading, just as the desktop should appear, it did it, and it lasted a little longer, this time the monitor said no video detected, for just a moment tho. I immediately restarted, and here I am, the bug is gone.

Note: It doesn't seem to matter if it's a cold boot or not. I'm going to reinstall my video card drivers now, but somehow I don't think it will change anything, but who knows.

Any idea's? Thanks, and sry for the length!

Edit: The reason I'm leaning away from a bad Gpu, or dying rather, is the fact that Windows Vista, & Windows 7, both have an effect exactly like this, sometimes when the UAC comes up, the screen go's black, in exactly the same way, then go's to the dimmed out screen with the prompt. This is common and it's just, too similar to what's happening, I can't help but think they may be related.

I'm installing the drivers now, so it would be great to get some ideas, between now and when this happens again.

Preferred Solution: Strange video issues

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Strange video issues

I can only guess at this, of course, but that certainly sounds like it could be a failing video card. But it could also be due to a under-powered or failing power supply or even bad or faulty RAM.

The symptoms are very similar to TDR events, but since you are not getting any messages (Display Driver xxx stopped responding and was recovered") then we can assume it is not that, for now.

Try the new drivers. Make sure you are doing a clean driver install when dealing with video issues.

Also test to see if advanced graphics trigger the events by changing the desktop from an Aero theme to one of the basic themes. When I refresh my desktop it is nearly instantaneous - I can barely see the flash. Your video is dogging down to perform that simple task.

Also, look in your Event Viewer to see if there are any Critical Errors or Warnings that might point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps.

When my machine comes up the display flash to black occasionally and not everything on the screen displays when it is up (for example, I can see the login area, but not the box to type into) there are also stray lines on the screen. I thought it was a hardware problem. However, when I boot safe mode, everything works fine.

I've tried installing the latest drivers from Nvidia (the video card is an MX4 series) and have also reinstalled the OS. Neither of which worked.

I'm fairly confident this is a hardware issue, but I don't know which piece of hardware is the problem. Does anyone know for certain if this sounds more like a video card issue, a motherboard issue, or something entirely different. I do not have an extra video card to plug in though I may go that route to avoid having to replace the motherboard unnecessarily. Thoughts?

A:Very strange display issues...video card, motherboard, OS?

if you can get into safe mode easily and not regular, it would be a software issue
do you have any restore points that you can use and go back to a previous time when things worked well

Okay, so I've been having some annoying issues on my computer, nothing serious yet but some are concerning. Feel free to ask for more info if needed.

Issue 1: I've had some jerkiness/lag and loading issues for some of the games I play, particularly Blizzard games (all of which should be well within system specs). The prime examples:

--> When I play Overwatch, sometimes character models/audio/sprays/projectiles take FOREVER to load for the first game I play after launching the program. All player models are essentially invisible, including my own (don't see the character's weapon or even HUD), and if I fire my weapon while invisible the map will react (breakable objects break), but all of the effects are invisible (if I fire a rocket, for instance, the rocket and explosion are invisible). I can still see usernames above allied players, but enemies are completely invisible. Models load at different rates (so one hero's model might load after a few seconds while the rest take minutes, for instance), any sprays just appear as the default spray (if they appear at all), and voice lines don't work. This has lasted for an entire round before, and when that happens the "play of the game" clip will often have invisible characters in it, even if they've loaded fully by the end of the round. Additionally, even once most/all assets are loaded, if I die and respawn there is a period (several seconds) where the screen is completely black even though my character is ... Read more

I'm not exactly new to computers, but I'm completely at a loss here with what to do. I boot up, and sometimes it won't let me open hardly any programs, and won't register if I try them from the start menu, yet they show them as running in the processes in task manager. Other times almost everything works fine (seems like the only thing not wanting to work at those times is Windows Live Messenger). Also I ctrl+alt+del sometimes and it says it can't open the menu, and I've had to post the run command directly to my desktop to try and run certain things manually. I'm running a 64bit win 7 OS and I've recently fixed a bunch of registries with the newest TrendMicro Titanium max security, and that's helped out quite a bit, but I just can't seem to figure out what is going on with it, I've ran just about every scan possible, and haven't found any viruses, spyware, etc... Sooo... I'm hoping this HJT log will hold some kind of valuable information if anybody could help me please =).

I'd also like to add that the only reason I removed MWB was because trendmicro made me lol, but before I did I ran the scans with AVG, MWB, both up to date, and even ran the TM scan and still nothing as far as malware goes, I generally don't get much malware, I'm pretty safe with my browsing and downloads, I get the occasional adware or spyware every few months or so, but that's about it.

Recently FF upgraded to latest version 23.0
I didn't have any probs even after that either.

Few days ago, I was performing an bank transaction, all of a sudden I got warning msg Java Deployment Toolkit is unsafe or something on those terms near the navbar on the page popping up & the address bar was showing unsafe icon, so I selected the option to Never Activate in Add-Ons for Java Deployment Kit, closed FF & restarted FF with fresh windows.

Once again I went into bank transactions, it didn't throw me any errors but when I logged into my Online Bank Account, it didn't show any warning or anything but stated due to Java being disabled, it can't show files related to it, it didn't matter for me, as I just logged on to check my balance.

Now, I encountered something really strange. Because of my work, I have to fill lots of online forms, which usually get stored in the drop down boxes in the Text Boxes on forms, just like the way "Thread title" stores our previous opened topic titles. Now, for certain boxes I see the entries to be showing up twice. For example, if an entry should show email address, assuming my email id is - [email protected], it shows up twice in the drop down boxes, I didn't know what's the reason behind this.

One more important change I noticed is ... when I enter any particular field in CAPS on text boxes, it doesn't get stored in the text box history. I'm not sure if 23.0 was released in such fashion or something else is messing this one ... Read more

Friends system ( XP home)had a couple typical antivir 2011 type infections, got those to stop popping up, no proxies enabled. ( in IE or firefox) Have run MSSE and malwarebytes both clean.
Right now, no problem connecting to the internet ( expect windows update) but when he (I) try to update MSSE it fails with error:
Virus and Spyware definitions update failed
Security essentials could not check for spyware or virus definitions update to to an internet or network connectivity issue.
click help for more information about this problem( nothing there helped)
Error code: 0x80072efe
Error description, Security Essentials couldn't install the definition update, please try again later

and also the machine gives a "internet explorer cannot display this page" error, when i "diagnose problem, it says that it could not find an issue.
I ran the microsoft fixit to reset the host file, restarted, same issue.

everything works though he describes an issue, when ge visits the Chicago sun times sports section he says the machine almost always goes in to "high gear" and some sort of adserver(what i interpret as such form his description of what appears in the status bar) is trying but failing to load ads. after he closes down the browser in a minute of two it stops.

TDSSkiller removed something, no log, malwarebytes found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WhiteSmokeTranslator (PUP.WhiteSmoke) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. was then able to update MSSE.
MSSE then found and removed
System is running better, pages load faster at Chicago Trib(not sun times), though come to find out all pages were having loading issues.

First a little background.

The computer that this refers to has been my main production computer for the past 10 months with no hardware issues. It has run solidly with Vista SP1 x64, Vista SP2 64. For production, I have replaced it with another machine and this has become my test production machine.

Machine specs:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard
Q6600 Rev GO
Corsair 4G (2x2G) DDR2 1066 5-5-5-18 @2.1v
Corsair HX520 PS

All standard bios settings except as required to get RAM to run at rated speed and clocks (manually changed multiplier, and voltage - bios set timings). Otherwise no overclock.

Installed and ran 7100 x64 and then 7201 x64. Clean installs. Both ran without problems (except for a few bugs).

I then did a clean install of 7229 x64. Installed all my apps and everything seemed to work so I assumed the system was working.

I then had the idea to add 2 more sticks of RAM (Crucial 2G (2x1G) DDR2 5-5-5-18 @2.1v) to bring me to a total of 6G. Note these were removed from a thrid system when I upgraded it. The had worked flawlessly in this system for 2 years at the same timings and voltages).

As I am aware that mixing RAM has been known to cause problems, I tested. I ran memtest 86+ for 12 hours... no problem. I ran OCCT for 6 hours and prime 95 for 6 hours. All without problems.

I assumed that I was good to go.

At first, it seemed that way. I noticed big speed improvements in Photoshop and Premiere Pro CS4. Everything seemed to be okay. ... Read more

A:Strange RAM issues

The causes of BSOD's are elusive. You've got issues at rest and only with extra RAM installed - but the RAM tests good.

I'd suggest underclocking the RAM to 800 mHz to see if that improves stability.
You can also disable the changing voltages to see if that has any effect.
Also, check your BIOS version against the versions available from Gigabyte. In particular, read the release notes to see if there are memory issues addressed there.

All of a sudden my Dell laptop (just over a year old, go figure as soon as the warranty expires it gives me problems) has started acting funny. Here's some of the issues that started happening all of a sudden

-It runs super slow at times and freezes up, svchost.exe seems to be taking a lot of resources up when that's happening
-The memory card reader doesn't work. Windows makes the noise that a new device has been recognized when I put one in, but it never shows up in My Computer.
-Both Firefox and IE aren't loading some sites. I'm connected to the internet and some sites load just fine and others never seem to load- and it's not that the site is down. My Google customized homepage will load, but I can't do any searches (either from the page or from the search tool bar in both IE and Firefox), weather.com won't load- and the list seems to grow.

My first thought was I have some type of spyware even though I'm very good about not downloading stuff so I ran a ad-aware scan and it came up with nothing. I also ran a hijackthis scan and everything was normal there too.

Any thoughts on what's causing any of these issues or how I can fix them?

I've recently moved and when I set up my computer again, my USB ports are not working. Well, not working isn't necessarily true...they only recognize one of my USB devices (Web Cam). I have 4 ports, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. Unfortunately, they are 1.1 ports, but I've never had any issues with them before. Neither of the 4 ports recognize my wireless gamepad (Logitech Wingman), 2 USB Hubs (1 which was purchased last week), Media Card reader and MP3 player. Whenever I plug into a port I don't get the standard Windows chime that says Windows has detected a new device. I do get the chime with the web cam.

Some specs:
Dell Dimension 8200
2GHz Pentium 4
Windows XP Home SP2

In the device manager, the 2 rear USB ports (Intel 8281BA\BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442 and 2444) are shown as well as their corresponding USB Root Hubs. The 2 front ports are not shown though. I assume that they used to show up, but I can't remember. Anyway, there are no issues with the rear ports in the device manager.

The one device that does work (the web cam) works in all four ports, so they are all powered.

I have uninstalled the devices mentioned in previous threads in this forum in device manager and rebooted twice. Nothing happens. I have checked my BIOS and USB is enabled.

I can understand if one USB device just stopped working, but for 5 devices to not be recognized (one that was just purchased!) has baffled me to no end.

Any ideas?

A:Strange USB Issues

You're sure that the devices actually work? Have you tried them on other computers? Did you have to install any drivers with your hardware before you moved? If yes, have you tried re-installing them? Are your devices usb 1.1 or 2.0?

This morning I was checking out some of the processes on my laptop and comparing them to my desktop. Svchost was going way up (made it up to like 120,000 kb) and then the computer started freezing. I had to leave for work and didn't have time to open up Process explorer or anything to get a more detailed report. At the time I was running McAffee (it was scanning for viruses), Windows Defender, Word, and I'd just launched Firefox, but it hadn't loaded yet. Like I said, I couldn't get to see what specific service svchost was using, but I'm guessing it was probably dcom service process launcher since that was the one highlighted in Process Explorer yesterday. When I get home today I guess I'll find out what happens I leave the computer be for a bit, if it finishes whatever it was doing and fixes itself, or if it's still frozen/acting super slow.

Hi guys - first post here so please be nice ;

Got a frustrating problem and nothing seems to work but first will give you a bit of specs first

I am running 32-bit Vista, on a AMD Phenom x4 with a Gigabyte M750SLI-DS4 motherboard, with 2 gig of DDR2 and 500Gb Hdd.

However, Vista isn't detecting neither my psp nor my 32gig iPod Touch through the USB ports. The PSP comes up with an unknown device message when I plug it in, but the iPod doesn't register a thing. However, if I plug the iPod into the firewire port on the motherboard, it does charge up but still not detected at all.

I have tried uninstalling and installing iTunes various times, removing everything and anything related to it every single time, which, may I add, is not fun. I have also formatted, reinstalled and set up Vista about 5 times now but nothing.

I have checked my bios and it is up to date as well.

Any help would be great as right now have got two expensive paperweights sitting next to me.

Thanks in advance.

I have had issues with my computer for over a year, when in christmas of 2015 after adding ram I had boot issues. Long story short, over a year later I have replaced my power supply, tried many ram configurations and am almost definite the problem is motherboard based. Although my computer often operates totally normally, sometimes strange problems occur. When booting up, I often can't login, as when I try, for whatever reason, almost no system files can be found, including all of my hard drive's files and most of the windows files on my ssd. Except some files for programs like skype, which cause error messages about some different programs that can't open to pop up. Only my Recycle bin appears on my desktop. Strangely, I can log on usually if I wait about 20 minutes on the log in screen without actually logging on. Every other part of my system seems fine, but strange errors occur almost always on boot. Recently I have began to have problems occur whilst my pc is logged in. Usually, I get lots of lag and stutter, then my pc claims that my hard drive has disconnected. It is possible that my motherboard was damaged by static electricity when I put the new ram in over a year ago, as I had had it and it functioned fine for about 5 months. Sometimes when turning of my computer, I get an error message about some referenced memory which could not be written. Any help would be appreciated as my knowledge on motherboards is minimal, other than that needed to build a pc... Read more

I run Windows XP on a Macbook. I recently had a problem with my sound. When I turn on my computer, the Windows sound goes off. This is after I turned it off on Windows and I think I deleted the sound file for it.
Also, the speakers inside the computer no longer work. I do get sound though when I plug in speakers/headphones.

How do I fix this? It seems like two problems, but they seem connected somehow. Could it possibly do with my friends using the Mac side of the partition recently? I never touch that side and it seemed to have started when they went on the Mac side.

Anybody having issues where IE11 makes your screen flicker black or seems to be using a lot of CPU power?

For some strange reason IE11 has been acting strange - either causing screen flickering, causing high CPU usage, or losing focus. And what I mean by losing focus - yesterday where posting here, I was trying to link a word by clicking the link icon (blue globe), and it simply wouldn't work. Had to manually link the sentence. Anyway closing out of IE and re-opening it fixed the issue. BTW this isn't the first time this happened this week.

Bottom line is IE11 is issuing some strange behavior lately. Anyone else seeing this?

Here's the story, I recently got the inkling to defrag my C drive, as I hadn't done it in a few months. I go to defragment it (I had far more than 15% free space) and it kept giving me the error message "Disk Defragmenter could not start" whether I clicked Analyze or Defragment.

I ran a virusscan and ran RegistryFix before I did any research. Nothing major on the virusscan, RegistryFix showed several registry issues which were resolved, but didn't change anything regarding the defragmentor.

I found a freeware defragmenting app and it had similar issues, in this case It scanned the drive and two seconds later it said "Defragmentation complete"

After this, I ran the Check disk application under the properties of my C drive, and it gives me the message "Unable to complete disk check." This is when I started to get worried and do some thorough research. A common thing I saw to do was to run CHKDISK via the command prompt with the /r parameter. I did so, and it gave the already expected answer of needing to run the next time the computer reboots.

I did this, and this is where it gets strange... CHKDISK read that my C drive is a RAW filesystem. But upon startup, my C drive works just fine and the properties show it as an NTFS filesystem.

I downloaded the trial of Zero Assumption Recovery, and it didn't detect my C drive as viable for recovery. Regardless, it probably didn't matter, as I can still read and write to the driv... Read more

Sorry if this gets a little long but I'm at a total loss as to what is happening.

I had the same setup for years without a problem, then my router went bad so I got a new one. Everything was fine for about 3 months and then all of the sudden last week my download speed on my desktop computer got really slow. No issues with upload speed only download.

Usually my download speed is between 15-20Mbps but now it's under 1Mbps. I have 2 laptops, one of which is in the same room, and neither of them has a problem. I've gone through all of the channels on the router and changed other settings and nothing worked. I moved the router with no success. I've tried different cables and I bought a new router and new adapter for the desktop and I still have slow speed. Now I'm back to what I had to begin with and of course I still have very slow speed. I even called the ISP just cover all the bases and make sure there weren't any problems on their end.

There is no problem with signal strength and the network speed usually stays at 54Mbps but never drops below 36Mbps when I'm connected.

On the problem computer I have Windows 7 and Vista both installed and the problem is the same no matter what OS I'm in. The laptops I use have Vista and XP, and like I said before there is no issue with them.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GS2 and the adapter I'm using now is a Linksys WUSB54GS v.2. I also tried a WUSB54GC adapter which didn't help.

Okay, I've been having some interesting boot issues with my current Windows 7 machine. If I restart my machine it can boot up fine. If I turn the machine off for a certain amount of time (4+ hours) it has issues booting up again. I get bsods like crazy claiming that it's the memory.

When this happens (turning on the computer after 4+ hours) I'll run Memtest86+ for around 2-3 hours. There will be no errors. I will then restart and boot the machine up and BAM windows will load with no issues.

It's as if my memory needs to be "warmed up" and it can't boot from a cold boot. Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? Is it simply the memory?

I'm using a Gateway MX8738

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

My problem... well it's something I've never experienced before. And searches have pulled nothing.

Whenever I stream video on this laptop, I have to move the mouse/trackpad around for the bar to continue loading. Originally I thought this was just graphical and it was actually loading, just not refreshing the bar. No, that is not the case.

It will play until it hits the ending of the bar, and won't continue until I move the mouse to make the bar load.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining it the best way though. I like to think of it like the following: It's like winding up a toy. A very annoying toy.

If anyone has any help, I'd be incredibly thankful.

Hi Guys,

So, where do I begin with this one? I am an avid gamer, and I have a budget gaming pc built for me by a friend that is around three years old now. The specs are below:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor (quad core)
AMD Radeon HD7850 graphics card
1600x900 samsung monitor.

Any other specs can be provided upon request. I would not describe myself as particularly excellent with computers, however neither would I be a complete novice. Now, to the problem at hand:

Playing certain games seems to cause a major issue with the graphics on my pc. During play, the screen will go blank, and the message saying the exe has crashed will appear. Fine. But if I then use the computer to do anything else, like browse the internet, all many of wierd and wonderful things occur. Certain parts of the page will go blank, and reappear seconds later having been inflated to twice their normal size. Or green. Or fuzzy. If I try to run the game again, it will crash instantly. Videos become unwatchable and the only thing the pc would be good for is staring at my desktop. Rebooting solves the issue, and all appears well again. However, when I start the game up again, the problem will occur again. Sometimes it will be seconds after starting the game, other times it can be anywhere up to an hour.

Now for the strange part: This problem only occurs on certain games, with seemingly no real correlation between which ones. Dying Light, for example, can be run at a very good spec and is perfectly stable ... Read more

My initial thoughts would be either a heat issue, power issue or drivers. However, that is not guaranteed.

Can you profide the make and model of the motherboard (including revision number), RAM (make, model, amount and how many sticks etc), Power Supply (make, model and rated wattage), what operating system are you using an dis it 32 or 64bit etc. The more info the better.

Have you ever cleaned out the inside of the case to remove dust from the heatsinks and fans etc?

Hello everyone on Techguy Forums!

I have a very interesting (in my opinion) problem that has been occurring with a PC that I just put together last night. First off let me list the specs for you guys before we get to the problem.

ABIT IP35-E LGA775 Motherboard
MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-800 (PC-6400) 5-6-6-15
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2

Now, the issue I've been having is very peculiar. When I first powered the thing up, it turned on, then shut off. Then it booted back up again and loaded like nothing happened. I thought this was a feature of the mobo so I passed it off as nothing. I configured the BIOS, no overclocking or nothing of the sort, just made sure all my parts were turned on and recognized, then I installed Windows XP... I think this is the standard steps of all PC builders. After running Windows Update, and installing the new forceware drivers for my video card (169.21), and well, instead of running benchmarks like some people would... I decided to immediately load up a bunch of new games that I've been dying to play on my PC. I installed first, a bunch of the 8800 nVIDIA demos, the... Read more

First of all, here is a link to what happened at their site:
W32.Blaster.Worm -- Missing Boot Manager - Tech Support Forum

As a recap of what's going on, Windows started stalling after boot up, and during the login screen at bootup. Startup Repair said that the bootmanager was missing. Trying bootrec through Recovery Console didn't seem to help. The computer would randomly boot into Windows and randomly stall at the glowing orbs. When it did boot completely, I had no network connectivity. The system would stall when I would do any of the following: right click on network icon and click Troubleshoot, try to Diagnose network problems, uninstalling and then reinstalling network device drivers (would stall when starting to reinstall them automatically).

When I ran chkdsk d: /f /r at recovery console (C: is normally my boot drive, but typing C: in the recovery console says that the drive is corrupt, I think my F: is actually the first drive in the hardware, which is why it says this), it said that the Master File Table had a corrupted BITMAP (it was allocated as empty but contained information, I think), and supposedly fixed it successfully. When I re-ran chkdsk, there were no issues. A restart did not solve the problem.

I booted in Safe Mode and ran sfc /scannow through an elevated command prompt but it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity viol... Read more

After playing a low-res game, a friend of mine who uses Windows Vista ran into resolution issues. After several attempts at changing the resolution to 1024x768, the screen still appears, as she describes "magnified." For example, the AIM windows at the smallest size it allows you to shrink them to, still takes up a good fifth of the screen because the (resolution or something, I've never seen anything quite like this) is so high. It's not precisely a resolution problem, or I would have been able to fix it quickly. Icons are all properly sized, etc., but it's still as she describes "like a magnifying glass" is on the screen. I'm not physically at the computer so I can't very well examine it aside from screenshots here and there, so I am unable to ascertain what the problem is with 100% certainty. Any suggestions?

Hey, I have been Googling and surfing the forums and can't seem to find a similar issue.

Basically, I have a madcatz v7 gaming keyboard and its great, I like typing on it and the lighting effects though a gimmick are pretty cool.

It has been solidly working for the past year but all of the sudden a family member was using it the other day and they told me it suddenly stopped working.

When I came to check sure enough it didnt work either at boot for the bios or in windows. I tried another USB port and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them numerous times including removing them from the registry. As i was also planning on it i preformed a system reformat after a physical component clean and still no joy. thinking maybe its my OS or USB ports I tried it in my laptop and still nothing.

One thing i did notice however is that the media keys, volume, song control still work. But the macro keys and normal qwerty typing do not work.

I am basically at a loss as to what is happening and thought id posts for any ideas.

cheers in advance for any insight and help

Hi everyone, I am having issues with my 2.1 channel Creative T3130 speakers and the sound output from my motherboard (MSI P55-GD80).

At random times, one of the following will occur:
One speaker will get very loud and the other very quiet. Sometimes, one speaker cuts out entirely and all the sound outputs from one speaker. The subwoofer seems to continue functioning normally.
My subwoofer will get treated as a speaker while one speaker is treated like the subwoofer.
My sound driver is the most recent one and was downloaded from the MSI site. I actually uninstalled it and am running using the generic Windows sound driver and I currently have no sound problems. However, this also means that I have little to no control over things like audio balance, room correction, etc.

I was wondering if someone could please help me with this. Thanks.

I also have about 8 gigs of system ram so this shouldn't happen.

My computer has been having some odd problems since I brought it home from my dorm in May.

Every once in a while it will stop giving me a video output. So I follow the same steps. I will first try to reset the BIOS. When that dosen't work (It usually dosen't) I will remove my video card and attempt to use the onboard Video (The onboard video usually stops working, I also noticed my built in Ethernet no longer works around this point) When I get no onboard video I remove all but one stick of RAM and try to reset the bios again. When I still yet get no video I disconnect any PCI cards, unplug all peripherals and disconnect power to them (If I havent already) I then try booting the computer with no ram, the ram card in different slots, different ram cards in different slots, resetting the bios occasionally.

Anyway usually what happens is by the time I am about to give up for no apparent reason the Mobo will start working correctly again. I will have done nothing special when this happens. My current problem is that this issue has occurred and the mobo will not resume normal operation despite all attempts.

Just wondering if any of you had any idea what may be going on. My personal opinion is that the BIOS is heavily corrupted and or that the motherboard is just flawed. It bothers me that everything else works fine during all my tests, harddrives spin and sound as though they read, CPU fan spins etc. But the the Video is just gone.

I recently lost the ability to burn cd's/dvd's. Roxio said I didn't have a supported burner (it's an NEC 1100A), so I tried the burner that's built in to XP; still no luck. I formatted and re-installed XP, but still have the same problem. I tried to upgrade the firmware with software downloaded from NEC's website, but the firmware upgrade can't find my drive. It plays cd's/dvd's ok, it just won't burn. I checked disk management to see if it's recognized and noticed that my hard drives (I have two) no longer have drive letters assigned. I was able to assign my secondary drive a letter, but not my primary drive. A few reboots later, my secondary drive lost the drive letter I assigned to it. In explorer it still shows up as d: (I had assigned q: earlier), but in disk management there's nothing. I have a Dell Diminsion 2400 and just upgraded the BIOS to A05. I have a 40GB master hard drive and a 60GB slave; a DVD ROM master and a DVD+RW slave; 512 MB RAM.

Here's what I've tried:
Upgraded the BIOS
Formatted and re-installed
Made the DVD+RW the only drive on the secondary IDE channel
Used only one hard drive on the primary IDE channel.

Ok, from the beginning:

I've recently built a system for my sister which seemed to be working fine while it was with me. I installed Vista Ultimate (from DVD), Mobo and network card drivers (from CD), Avast antivirus, Spybot S&D, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 and Limewire Pro (all from download), and The Lord of the Rings Online (both from CD and downloaded updates).

All was going swimmingly until she took her new system home and tried to install her Thompson 330 Speedtouch modem. Not only did the modem fail to install (the CD only contained XP drivers), but seems to have screwed her DVD drive too.

I have fixed the modem issue by downloading and installing the Vista drivers, but her DVD drive continues to have problems.

It seems to read CDs fine, but if you insert a DVD disk, Windows Explorer will freeze and no other programs can be loaded up. The only way to get connectivity back, is to eject the DVD drive.

I have checked Device Manager for any issues (none showing) and the registry to delete the upper and lower values (although I couldn't find any to delete anyway). I have also tried a system restore to a point before she tried to install her modem - still no joy.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Looking for a little help here (aren't most of us anyway?). Anyhooo, I picked up my kids computer from my ex's house. When they started it up all the display would show was 'no signal.' I brought it home and plugged it into a CRT monitor that I have and got the same thing. I opened it up and removed all the cards, cleaned it out and put it back together thinking that because it's been around a while the PCI and AGP cards might not be seated as well as when it was new. Along the way I noticed that on the hold downs on the CPU heatsink one of the corner clips was broken off. I removed the heat sink, reseated the CPU and since the one corner was broken I put the computer on it's side and set the heatsink on the CPU. Then it fired right up. I thought that maybe the heat sink was putting pressure on the CPU lopsided and maybe that was the problem. I have a Zalman heat sink on mine and I put it in their computer. If I tightened the screws down even in the slightest it wouldn't start. I might get the POST beep and then nothing. If I unscrewed the heatsink, reseated the CPU and set the heat sink on without screwing it on, the computer worked. But each time I had to reseat the CPU I would have to reset the BIOS settings. I've taken the CPU out of mine and put it in and if I tighten the heatsink I get the same issue. I'm thinking the motherboard is bad but have no way to test it. The setup is as follows:

Hi. I was wondering if any of you could help me with a problem I've been experiencing for about 3 years now. I'm running Win. 98SE on an HP Pavilion 8500 series. I'm not sure of the sound card type, as there's nothing about it in the documentation or system information program. Now, the problem is that I'll suddenly hear a blast of static and scratchy-ness coming from my speakers. This lasts for as much as 45 seconds. After it, there is no sound in the application until you close it and restart the program*. I've tried downloading drivers to try and fix it, which did nothing but prevent me from connecting to the internet (my sound card is a combination sound card and modem), and I've also tried to refitting the sound card in it's PCI slot (someone told me I had a loose sound card) which also did nothing. If someone could help me out, that'd be great.

*The only exception is Real Player and Windows Media Player, which lose all sound. You don't have to close it, just go back a few seconds.

Greets to all!

This in regards to a Win7 Enterprise 64b system. I've had problems installing various software packages, and it is appearing to be user-related.

When I try and install certain packages (demo for Corel Painter 11 for example), they throw up a dialog box asking if you agree to various terms. The 'bug' is that this dialog box shows up BLANK, and there is no way to interact with it, and I have to abort the install - often by using Task Manger and killing the process. This has happened for a number of install-attempts in other programs as well.

I logged in as Admin (and later as a new user with admin rights) and did the installs - and voila! - the dialog box appears as it should and the install ran fine. The Painter 11 demo ran fine as well.

When I re-log in as the original user and run the Painter 11 demo, it gets into a very squirrely mode - a blank dialog appears (after a great deal of time) and the cursor is jittering all over the screen - and I have to go to Task Manger and kill the Painter process.

It would appear there is something munged up in this user - can anybody offer any ideas on where to look? It appears whenever an app puts up the dialog box that asks if you agree with the license (or similar) this user has something wrong that won't let it run... Any clues????

I read where others have experienced similar issues, but no solid solution has been found. Things that have been suggested:

1. Making sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft for IE
2. If IE becomes unstable, you can use the reset feature under the advanced tab

The issue is that for the last four days suddenly my computer will stop having internet. It says it IS connected to the internet, though, and says the signal strength is great. I've got a user's Compaq HP here connected to an LCD. Want to extend the LCD on to the LCD and make it the main. Problem is that I can extend, but the option to uncheck the laptop as the main is greyed out (have tried applying, even rebooting first to no effect). Nothing I do seems to be able to unlock it. There are no outside drivers/control tools (ex being NVidia) of any sort that I can locate. She said they had done this before, but did not know exactly how.
