Strange video issues

Q: Strange video issues

I'm having a few issues, and just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen, or may know what causes it.

First, this could be related, I'm not sure, a few days ago I ran GPUZ and CPUZ, clicking through the tabs and realized my video card was set at Pci-Express x4 1.1. I reseated the card several times, cleaned the pci-e slot, then used my secondary pci-e power connectors, and finally it's running as it should @ x16. I'm not sure how long it was like that, the performance decrease wasn't noticeable. (I'm actually curious if it was just reporting it wrong, because my benchmarks were extremely close; Counter Strike: Source| Video Stress test 216fps at x4, then when I fixed it, 224fps. All settings maxed. This all happened two days ago, and has been fine since fixing it, but..
Now, and this never happened before, and started right after that issue, sometimes when I boot up, if I right click the desktop, and select 'Refresh', the screen go's black for a moment, for about exactly 1 second, not long enough for the monitor to say (no video), but close. Once or twice it did do that though. Once yesterday while browsing this forum, it started, but this time it only did it if I tried to scroll up or down a thread. I minimized my browser, and tried to select refresh at the desktop, to see if it was the same bug, and it did it, I had to restart the machine.
Then just now, today, I booted up, signed into my user, and exactly then, as it said loading, just as the desktop should appear, it did it, and it lasted a little longer, this time the monitor said no video detected, for just a moment tho. I immediately restarted, and here I am, the bug is gone.

Note: It doesn't seem to matter if it's a cold boot or not. I'm going to reinstall my video card drivers now, but somehow I don't think it will change anything, but who knows.

Any idea's? Thanks, and sry for the length!

Edit: The reason I'm leaning away from a bad Gpu, or dying rather, is the fact that Windows Vista, & Windows 7, both have an effect exactly like this, sometimes when the UAC comes up, the screen go's black, in exactly the same way, then go's to the dimmed out screen with the prompt. This is common and it's just, too similar to what's happening, I can't help but think they may be related.

I'm installing the drivers now, so it would be great to get some ideas, between now and when this happens again.

Preferred Solution: Strange video issues

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Strange video issues

I can only guess at this, of course, but that certainly sounds like it could be a failing video card. But it could also be due to a under-powered or failing power supply or even bad or faulty RAM.

The symptoms are very similar to TDR events, but since you are not getting any messages (Display Driver xxx stopped responding and was recovered") then we can assume it is not that, for now.

Try the new drivers. Make sure you are doing a clean driver install when dealing with video issues.

Also test to see if advanced graphics trigger the events by changing the desktop from an Aero theme to one of the basic themes. When I refresh my desktop it is nearly instantaneous - I can barely see the flash. Your video is dogging down to perform that simple task.

Also, look in your Event Viewer to see if there are any Critical Errors or Warnings that might point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps.

When my machine comes up the display flash to black occasionally and not everything on the screen displays when it is up (for example, I can see the login area, but not the box to type into) there are also stray lines on the screen. I thought it was a hardware problem. However, when I boot safe mode, everything works fine.

I've tried installing the latest drivers from Nvidia (the video card is an MX4 series) and have also reinstalled the OS. Neither of which worked.

I'm fairly confident this is a hardware issue, but I don't know which piece of hardware is the problem. Does anyone know for certain if this sounds more like a video card issue, a motherboard issue, or something entirely different. I do not have an extra video card to plug in though I may go that route to avoid having to replace the motherboard unnecessarily. Thoughts?

A:Very strange display issues...video card, motherboard, OS?

if you can get into safe mode easily and not regular, it would be a software issue
do you have any restore points that you can use and go back to a previous time when things worked well

Okay, so I've been having some annoying issues on my computer, nothing serious yet but some are concerning. Feel free to ask for more info if needed.

Issue 1: I've had some jerkiness/lag and loading issues for some of the games I play, particularly Blizzard games (all of which should be well within system specs). The prime examples:

--> When I play Overwatch, sometimes character models/audio/sprays/projectiles take FOREVER to load for the first game I play after launching the program. All player models are essentially invisible, including my own (don't see the character's weapon or even HUD), and if I fire my weapon while invisible the map will react (breakable objects break), but all of the effects are invisible (if I fire a rocket, for instance, the rocket and explosion are invisible). I can still see usernames above allied players, but enemies are completely invisible. Models load at different rates (so one hero's model might load after a few seconds while the rest take minutes, for instance), any sprays just appear as the default spray (if they appear at all), and voice lines don't work. This has lasted for an entire round before, and when that happens the "play of the game" clip will often have invisible characters in it, even if they've loaded fully by the end of the round. Additionally, even once most/all assets are loaded, if I die and respawn there is a period (several seconds) where the screen is completely black even though my character is ... Read more

All of a sudden my Dell laptop (just over a year old, go figure as soon as the warranty expires it gives me problems) has started acting funny. Here's some of the issues that started happening all of a sudden

-It runs super slow at times and freezes up, svchost.exe seems to be taking a lot of resources up when that's happening
-The memory card reader doesn't work. Windows makes the noise that a new device has been recognized when I put one in, but it never shows up in My Computer.
-Both Firefox and IE aren't loading some sites. I'm connected to the internet and some sites load just fine and others never seem to load- and it's not that the site is down. My Google customized homepage will load, but I can't do any searches (either from the page or from the search tool bar in both IE and Firefox), weather.com won't load- and the list seems to grow.

My first thought was I have some type of spyware even though I'm very good about not downloading stuff so I ran a ad-aware scan and it came up with nothing. I also ran a hijackthis scan and everything was normal there too.

Any thoughts on what's causing any of these issues or how I can fix them?

I have had issues with my computer for over a year, when in christmas of 2015 after adding ram I had boot issues. Long story short, over a year later I have replaced my power supply, tried many ram configurations and am almost definite the problem is motherboard based. Although my computer often operates totally normally, sometimes strange problems occur. When booting up, I often can't login, as when I try, for whatever reason, almost no system files can be found, including all of my hard drive's files and most of the windows files on my ssd. Except some files for programs like skype, which cause error messages about some different programs that can't open to pop up. Only my Recycle bin appears on my desktop. Strangely, I can log on usually if I wait about 20 minutes on the log in screen without actually logging on. Every other part of my system seems fine, but strange errors occur almost always on boot. Recently I have began to have problems occur whilst my pc is logged in. Usually, I get lots of lag and stutter, then my pc claims that my hard drive has disconnected. It is possible that my motherboard was damaged by static electricity when I put the new ram in over a year ago, as I had had it and it functioned fine for about 5 months. Sometimes when turning of my computer, I get an error message about some referenced memory which could not be written. Any help would be appreciated as my knowledge on motherboards is minimal, other than that needed to build a pc... Read more

Hi guys - first post here so please be nice ;

Got a frustrating problem and nothing seems to work but first will give you a bit of specs first

I am running 32-bit Vista, on a AMD Phenom x4 with a Gigabyte M750SLI-DS4 motherboard, with 2 gig of DDR2 and 500Gb Hdd.

However, Vista isn't detecting neither my psp nor my 32gig iPod Touch through the USB ports. The PSP comes up with an unknown device message when I plug it in, but the iPod doesn't register a thing. However, if I plug the iPod into the firewire port on the motherboard, it does charge up but still not detected at all.

I have tried uninstalling and installing iTunes various times, removing everything and anything related to it every single time, which, may I add, is not fun. I have also formatted, reinstalled and set up Vista about 5 times now but nothing.

I have checked my bios and it is up to date as well.

Any help would be great as right now have got two expensive paperweights sitting next to me.

Thanks in advance.

This would tend to indicate that the motherboard chipset drivers have not been installed.

Windows default drivers just won't do the trick.

Recently FF upgraded to latest version 23.0
I didn't have any probs even after that either.

Few days ago, I was performing an bank transaction, all of a sudden I got warning msg Java Deployment Toolkit is unsafe or something on those terms near the navbar on the page popping up & the address bar was showing unsafe icon, so I selected the option to Never Activate in Add-Ons for Java Deployment Kit, closed FF & restarted FF with fresh windows.

Once again I went into bank transactions, it didn't throw me any errors but when I logged into my Online Bank Account, it didn't show any warning or anything but stated due to Java being disabled, it can't show files related to it, it didn't matter for me, as I just logged on to check my balance.

Now, I encountered something really strange. Because of my work, I have to fill lots of online forms, which usually get stored in the drop down boxes in the Text Boxes on forms, just like the way "Thread title" stores our previous opened topic titles. Now, for certain boxes I see the entries to be showing up twice. For example, if an entry should show email address, assuming my email id is - [email protected], it shows up twice in the drop down boxes, I didn't know what's the reason behind this.

One more important change I noticed is ... when I enter any particular field in CAPS on text boxes, it doesn't get stored in the text box history. I'm not sure if 23.0 was released in such fashion or something else is messing this one ... Read more

The same thing happens with me. Version 23. Once I enter a word in a text field the next time I start to type the same word I see it twice in the dropdown selection.

First a little background.

The computer that this refers to has been my main production computer for the past 10 months with no hardware issues. It has run solidly with Vista SP1 x64, Vista SP2 64. For production, I have replaced it with another machine and this has become my test production machine.

Machine specs:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard
Q6600 Rev GO
Corsair 4G (2x2G) DDR2 1066 5-5-5-18 @2.1v
Corsair HX520 PS

All standard bios settings except as required to get RAM to run at rated speed and clocks (manually changed multiplier, and voltage - bios set timings). Otherwise no overclock.

Installed and ran 7100 x64 and then 7201 x64. Clean installs. Both ran without problems (except for a few bugs).

I then did a clean install of 7229 x64. Installed all my apps and everything seemed to work so I assumed the system was working.

I then had the idea to add 2 more sticks of RAM (Crucial 2G (2x1G) DDR2 5-5-5-18 @2.1v) to bring me to a total of 6G. Note these were removed from a thrid system when I upgraded it. The had worked flawlessly in this system for 2 years at the same timings and voltages).

As I am aware that mixing RAM has been known to cause problems, I tested. I ran memtest 86+ for 12 hours... no problem. I ran OCCT for 6 hours and prime 95 for 6 hours. All without problems.

I assumed that I was good to go.

At first, it seemed that way. I noticed big speed improvements in Photoshop and Premiere Pro CS4. Everything seemed to be okay. ... Read more

A:Strange RAM issues

The causes of BSOD's are elusive. You've got issues at rest and only with extra RAM installed - but the RAM tests good.

I'd suggest underclocking the RAM to 800 mHz to see if that improves stability.
You can also disable the changing voltages to see if that has any effect.
Also, check your BIOS version against the versions available from Gigabyte. In particular, read the release notes to see if there are memory issues addressed there.

I'm not exactly new to computers, but I'm completely at a loss here with what to do. I boot up, and sometimes it won't let me open hardly any programs, and won't register if I try them from the start menu, yet they show them as running in the processes in task manager. Other times almost everything works fine (seems like the only thing not wanting to work at those times is Windows Live Messenger). Also I ctrl+alt+del sometimes and it says it can't open the menu, and I've had to post the run command directly to my desktop to try and run certain things manually. I'm running a 64bit win 7 OS and I've recently fixed a bunch of registries with the newest TrendMicro Titanium max security, and that's helped out quite a bit, but I just can't seem to figure out what is going on with it, I've ran just about every scan possible, and haven't found any viruses, spyware, etc... I'd also like to add that the only reason I removed MWB was because trendmicro made me lol, but before I did I ran the scans with AVG, MWB, both up to date, and even ran the TM scan and still nothing as far as malware goes, I generally don't get much malware, I'm pretty safe with my browsing and downloads, I get the occasional adware or spyware every few months or so, but that's about it.

I've recently moved and when I set up my computer again, my USB ports are not working. Well, not working isn't necessarily true...they only recognize one of my USB devices (Web Cam). I have 4 ports, 2 in the front and 2 in the back. Unfortunately, they are 1.1 ports, but I've never had any issues with them before. Neither of the 4 ports recognize my wireless gamepad (Logitech Wingman), 2 USB Hubs (1 which was purchased last week), Media Card reader and MP3 player. Whenever I plug into a port I don't get the standard Windows chime that says Windows has detected a new device. I do get the chime with the web cam.

Some specs:
Dell Dimension 8200
2GHz Pentium 4
Windows XP Home SP2

In the device manager, the 2 rear USB ports (Intel 8281BA\BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442 and 2444) are shown as well as their corresponding USB Root Hubs. The 2 front ports are not shown though. I assume that they used to show up, but I can't remember. Anyway, there are no issues with the rear ports in the device manager.

The one device that does work (the web cam) works in all four ports, so they are all powered.

I have uninstalled the devices mentioned in previous threads in this forum in device manager and rebooted twice. Nothing happens. I have checked my BIOS and USB is enabled.

I can understand if one USB device just stopped working, but for 5 devices to not be recognized (one that was just purchased!) has baffled me to no end.

Any ideas?

A:Strange USB Issues

You're sure that the devices actually work? Have you tried them on other computers? Did you have to install any drivers with your hardware before you moved? If yes, have you tried re-installing them? Are your devices usb 1.1 or 2.0?

A:Strange issues

This morning I was checking out some of the processes on my laptop and comparing them to my desktop. Svchost was going way up (made it up to like 120,000 kb) and then the computer started freezing. I had to leave for work and didn't have time to open up Process explorer or anything to get a more detailed report. At the time I was running McAffee (it was scanning for viruses), Windows Defender, Word, and I'd just launched Firefox, but it hadn't loaded yet. Like I said, I couldn't get to see what specific service svchost was using, but I'm guessing it was probably dcom service process launcher since that was the one highlighted in Process Explorer yesterday. When I get home today I guess I'll find out what happens I leave the computer be for a bit, if it finishes whatever it was doing and fixes itself, or if it's still frozen/acting super slow.

I'm having multiple strange issues that I don't know what is causing it.

A couple of months ago my SpyBot Search & Destroy wouldn't run at start up sometimes when I right clicked and ran as administrator. When this happened, I couldn't scan for viruses with my Avast either. For awhile the issue stopped but then it started up again.

Eventually I got tired of it and researched SpyBot and saw a lot of posts about it not being good. So I uninstalled it. I'm not sure if that fixed the problem but I've been successfully able to run Avast scans afterwards.

Then, all of a sudden, I've been getting two recurring issues. One is that my reliability history is showing a lot of 'Windows Wireless LAN 802.11 Extensibility Framework' stopped working. However the internet still seems to work and download just fine. The second is all of a sudden my Windows Media Player won't run at all. It opens but it's just a circle and it never loads so I have to use Task Manager to close it and it won't reopen unless I do a restart. The previous SpyBot issue would fix with a restart too.

I've run scans with both Avast Free and MalwareBytes Free with updates and neither detects anything. I also just ran the sfc /scannow thing today and it said 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.'

Admittedly I haven't tried running an Avast scan when I get the Windows Media Player issue when it occurs.

I got a new Alienware M18x a day ago and have been getting some weird issues. The first is that every time the computer restarts, the date and time will reset to different dates and times (ranging from 2010 to 2020). I have to synchronize it every restart.

Second is that certain icons in the notifications area will not appear (they did when i first got the computer) Things such as the AMD Catalyst control center and Sound blaster control panel won't appear. Image

I also often get a "Alienrespawn update launcher has stopped working" when I turn the computer on.

ALSO, these all started happening after I got a blue screen. The entire computer crashed from some display error when watching a youtube video. First day of owning the computer.

I had an M18x earlier that worked great but I returned it because of a few dead pixels. This one is not working like the other one. I'm considering returning it as well but I don't want to have to return a $3k laptop TWICE. I did a system restore to factory settings (and kept some of the new files I had downloaded such as games) and still have the same problems.

So the last couple months my computer has been acting very strangely. I'm honestly not sure if it's a bug or spyware or what, but I'm completely stumped at where to even start on the problem.

The issues I've been having is that programs are suddenly just not starting up at all. It started with MSN a few months ago, initially just shutting down randomly, then taking a long time to start up, and now it won't even start at all. Tried re-installing, but nothing works.

Now suddenly iTunes just won't start up. Trying to start it up causes the computer to start thinking (the little hourglass on the mouse), but it never ends up starting. This just happened today. iTunes worked fine this morning.....restarted the computer and now it won't start at all.

The weirdest thing? Going into task manager, all the menu's are missing, including the max/min/exit bar. Don't know if that's related at all, but I've attached a screen to show what it looks like.

My only thoughts are that it might be a memory issue. But I can run much more memory intensive programs like 3D apps. And this just suddenly happened, so I can't imagine my memory is just disappearing. So I'm only left thinking that maybe it's a bug. I've attached my HJT log if anyone wants to take a look at this.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated....I'm in big trouble if I start loosing work related programs like photoshop or maya.

I can use Internet Explorer just fine, and I can use Trillian, and other various programs that access the internet. However, a select few things are not working for me.

First off, I'm connected to a hub that has a cable modem attached to it. Two computers are sharing this connection. I have no firewalls enabled (windows or otherwise), and the other computer is the same. I can not connect to many things I can't connect to windows update - I can't connect to the web using MyIE or AvantBrowser (although Mozilla does work) - and certain programs trying to access the internet just can't. This is very strange, because the other computer can do ALL of this, so I know it's not a router problem.

Anybody having issues where IE11 makes your screen flicker black or seems to be using a lot of CPU power?

For some strange reason IE11 has been acting strange - either causing screen flickering, causing high CPU usage, or losing focus. And what I mean by losing focus - yesterday where posting here, I was trying to link a word by clicking the link icon (blue globe), and it simply wouldn't work. Had to manually link the sentence. Anyway closing out of IE and re-opening it fixed the issue. BTW this isn't the first time this happened this week.

Bottom line is IE11 is issuing some strange behavior lately. Anyone else seeing this?

I recently lost the ability to burn cd's/dvd's. Roxio said I didn't have a supported burner (it's an NEC 1100A), so I tried the burner that's built in to XP; still no luck. I formatted and re-installed XP, but still have the same problem. I tried to upgrade the firmware with software downloaded from NEC's website, but the firmware upgrade can't find my drive. It plays cd's/dvd's ok, it just won't burn. I checked disk management to see if it's recognized and noticed that my hard drives (I have two) no longer have drive letters assigned. I was able to assign my secondary drive a letter, but not my primary drive. A few reboots later, my secondary drive lost the drive letter I assigned to it. In explorer it still shows up as d: (I had assigned q: earlier), but in disk management there's nothing. I have a Dell Diminsion 2400 and just upgraded the BIOS to A05. I have a 40GB master hard drive and a 60GB slave; a DVD ROM master and a DVD+RW slave; 512 MB RAM.

Here's what I've tried:
Upgraded the BIOS
Formatted and re-installed
Made the DVD+RW the only drive on the secondary IDE channel
Used only one hard drive on the primary IDE channel.

It all started with small changes like files or folders going missing or not where i placed/saved them, locked out of user accounts screen resoultion changes when it feels like something is taking over my computer. Computers acting up all the time like not responding like they they have a mind of there own. Then things started to get ever more wierd like files that were on one computer were all of a sudden on another computer that they should not be on. Strange remote disks on the Mac side that is locked. Files/folders that were once ?unlock are now locked and cannot access them. Computers crashing all the time. I even tried to fix this problem by going out and buying new computers for the business and over night what was once a fresh brand new computer had a full hard drive (500GB) of data over night out of no where! only one kind of data and would not let you open it. Everything was a shortcut instead of a direct path and files are being downloaded as binanry files. Weird folders from 1970. Times and da... Read more

A:Very strange computer issues HELP

Hi and welcome,
It all sounds very peculiar as you say. I might be barking up the wrong tree but some info that might help
- how are these machines networked?
- what levels of access do your colleagues/employees have?
- does anyone have remote access?
- any disgruntled ex-employees/colleagues?
- do you have robust backup procedures & safeguards in place?

After playing a low-res game, a friend of mine who uses Windows Vista ran into resolution issues. After several attempts at changing the resolution to 1024x768, the screen still appears, as she describes "magnified." For example, the AIM windows at the smallest size it allows you to shrink them to, still takes up a good fifth of the screen because the (resolution or something, I've never seen anything quite like this) is so high. It's not precisely a resolution problem, or I would have been able to fix it quickly. Icons are all properly sized, etc., but it's still as she describes "like a magnifying glass" is on the screen. I'm not physically at the computer so I can't very well examine it aside from screenshots here and there, so I am unable to ascertain what the problem is with 100% certainty. Any suggestions?

Hey folks, a strange audio issue has crept up for me.

When I'm watching flash videos (like Youtube, MLB.com, etc etc) and the video is on the screen, my audio gets VERY warbled. My connection is fine, it's not a data transmission issue. When I scroll further down the page so that the video is no longer visible, the audio seems to clear up.

I have an ASUS p5nsli mobo, with a Pentium D 3.2ghz and 4gb of physical ram (Windows XP pro).

Video card is nVidia GeForge 9800 GT

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of my audio drivers, to no avail, as well as the adobe products (flash player and shockwave player).

Other media types play fine with no issues.

I also noticed today (not sure if it's related) that I have some unknown devices in my Device Manager (not sure how... this setup has been physically unchanged for well over a year).

Under Other Devices I see listed SM Bus Controller and Unknown Device.

Thanks in advance for any help.... I'm stumped.

A:Strange Audio Issues

Well.... I reinstalled my nvidia video drivers and things seem to be a little better off now...

The device manager issues are still there, however.

Hey everyone. We can't figure out what's going on here. I hooked up Brighthouse internet cable a little over three weeks ago. In the house we have 2 computers directly connected to the internet and use a router. With my computer, there is a shared network connection for a third computer (using a network adapter ethernet card). We installed the card a few days after Brighthouse was installed.

The issue is that for the last four days suddenly my computer will stop having internet. It says it IS connected to the internet, though, and says the signal strength is great. The other computers - including the one getting internet from mine through the adapter card, keeps internet when mine goes down (which doesn't make sense to us.) If my computer is shut down the other computer cannot have internet, and is dependent on my having internet, so if I can't browse you would think the other could not either.

This happens once per day the last four days, not at the same time. I check mozilla, google chrome, internet explorer, my virus program AVG update, and Adobe installer update, as well as my music app and they all say I'm NOT connected to the internet. At the bottom of my screen the world globe is there and says I AM connected.

When I go to repair and diagnose, it comes back with the following error:

cannot communicate with www.microsoft.com(

It cannot repair this way. I cannot disable and enable the connection to have it work either. The only... Read more

Hi Guys,

So, where do I begin with this one? I am an avid gamer, and I have a budget gaming pc built for me by a friend that is around three years old now. The specs are below:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor (quad core)
AMD Radeon HD7850 graphics card
1600x900 samsung monitor.

Any other specs can be provided upon request. I would not describe myself as particularly excellent with computers, however neither would I be a complete novice. Now, to the problem at hand:

Playing certain games seems to cause a major issue with the graphics on my pc. During play, the screen will go blank, and the message saying the exe has crashed will appear. Fine. But if I then use the computer to do anything else, like browse the internet, all many of wierd and wonderful things occur. Certain parts of the page will go blank, and reappear seconds later having been inflated to twice their normal size. Or green. Or fuzzy. If I try to run the game again, it will crash instantly. Videos become unwatchable and the only thing the pc would be good for is staring at my desktop. Rebooting solves the issue, and all appears well again. However, when I start the game up again, the problem will occur again. Sometimes it will be seconds after starting the game, other times it can be anywhere up to an hour.

Now for the strange part: This problem only occurs on certain games, with seemingly no real correlation between which ones. Dying Light, for example, can be run at a very good spec and is perfectly stable ... Read more

A:Strange Graphics issues...

My initial thoughts would be either a heat issue, power issue or drivers. However, that is not guaranteed.

Can you profide the make and model of the motherboard (including revision number), RAM (make, model, amount and how many sticks etc), Power Supply (make, model and rated wattage), what operating system are you using an dis it 32 or 64bit etc. The more info the better.

Have you ever cleaned out the inside of the case to remove dust from the heatsinks and fans etc?

I have been building a second pc( from parts laying around) for 3d stuff and some gaming. The next day my main machine dies, no problem i will fire up the other pc. Start up the new build and it says no os, so i grab an old copy of win7 Ulitmate and do a fresh install. Can't get on the internet, drag old linux box out and download ethernet drivers and install, now internet works. Download and install Avast, Opera, Ati drivers and they all work.

Next i install Steam and Left4Dead2 and probably spent an hour or 2 playing L4d and no problems at all.
I then install 3d Coat (3d sculpting program) and when i try to run the program it does nothing.I download Media Player Classic and some random mp4 video and when i try to play the video, it starts then crashes. Some Dx9 message appears , so i install Dx9, still have the problem.Try the built in games like Freecell and Majong, and when i click on the icon, nothing happens.

Ok, i will try to open a jpg and sure enough i get "Com surrogate has stopped working" message.
I can open it in Paint however.

Well maybe it was a bad install, so today i reinstalled Win7, and this time i deleted the 450mb OEM partition, and the other 2 partions (100mb recovery and the main part). I create a new partition and the format it twice.Installed win7 again and still have the same problems. MPC and Freecell, and Windows Photo viewer still don't work.

Greets to all!

This in regards to a Win7 Enterprise 64b system. I've had problems installing various software packages, and it is appearing to be user-related.

When I try and install certain packages (demo for Corel Painter 11 for example), they throw up a dialog box asking if you agree to various terms. The 'bug' is that this dialog box shows up BLANK, and there is no way to interact with it, and I have to abort the install - often by using Task Manger and killing the process. This has happened for a number of install-attempts in other programs as well.

I logged in as Admin (and later as a new user with admin rights) and did the installs - and voila! - the dialog box appears as it should and the install ran fine. The Painter 11 demo ran fine as well.

When I re-log in as the original user and run the Painter 11 demo, it gets into a very squirrely mode - a blank dialog appears (after a great deal of time) and the cursor is jittering all over the screen - and I have to go to Task Manger and kill the Painter process.

It would appear there is something munged up in this user - can anybody offer any ideas on where to look? It appears whenever an app puts up the dialog box that asks if you agree with the license (or similar) this user has something wrong that won't let it run... Any clues????

Hi there,

In the past two days, my computer (self-built with wireless adapter installed) has lost the ability to access the internet, and if it does, for minutes at a time. Other computers in my house are able to connect to the wireless, but not mine. The Windows Network Diagnostic reported that the network "doesn't have a valid IP configuration, but I am skeptical to this because of the fact that my computer is the only one having this problem. I have tried uninstalling Norton Internet Security, reinstalling my wireless adapter's drivers, but neither have helped. I have been using this machine for about 5 months now, and this is the first time a problem like this one has occurred. My Ethernet port has also stopped working, so an offline solution would be optimal.

Definitely willing to share system specs if needed

First let me give you a run down of my hardware. I have 2 laptops and a PC. Laptop 1 is a Dell Inspiron 1521, Laptop 2 is a Compaq Pesario V6000 and the PC is a self built machine running on a socket 939 gigabyte board with a San Fransisco chip. All 3 have windows 7 Ultimate installed. I have not done any tweeking or anything like that would cause any complications and i use each of the 3 for different things. If you need more detailed information on hard drive please let me know and i will oblige.

The first and most important issue im having is that all 3 computers will not recognize that there is a blank CD in the drive. However, if i put a written cd in the drive it will display that there is something on the disk if using a burning tool, but still will not acknowledge the disk via my computer or navigation to the drive letter. But then again, it has no problem recognizing the windows CD or game CDs/DvDs. I tried to burn a copy of Ubuntu with a disk already in the drive and it ask for a blank disk (cd), when i ejected the disk and poped it back in it started the burn and burned it. I was able to restart and boot from CD bringing up the install screen (but i think somethign went wrong with the iso burn and woudl not let me boot from live disk but thats another story). Now that same disk will not be recognized again in windows. All of my machines do this.

Now, to the problem.

When I boot XP Pro, it is set to automatically boot to a specific user. Just recently (After messing with that annoying Network Setup Wizard, actually) this user can no longer boot up fully. All her apps load up, the net works right for a change, but the volume control icon no longer appears in the taskbar and the computer balks for like ten minutes. During that time, nothing will open, and it will make a HDD click every few seconds until it finally decides it is done toying with me and apps load normally. The Volume icon sill does not appear.

Oddly enough, if I just log her out, and log her right back in, the problem doesn't happen with the re-log, and the volume icon appears as normal?

Any idea why devices would load differently or not at all with a log out/back in versus logging in directly at boot?

The whole thing started when I used Network Setup Wiz, set it up improperly, tried to scrap it by editing the registry and removing references to an improperly configured VPN connection (Didn't even need it, messed up trying to network my 98se and XP computers). I run Windows XP on a Macbook. I recently had a problem with my sound. When I turn on my computer, the Windows sound goes off. This is after I turned it off on Windows and I think I deleted the sound file for it.
Also, the speakers inside the computer no longer work. I do get sound though when I plug in speakers/headphones.

How do I fix this? It seems like two problems, but they seem connected somehow. Could it possibly do with my friends using the Mac side of the partition recently? I never touch that side and it seemed to have started when they went on the Mac side.

This really isn't OS specific, as I've now encountered the problem on both win 7 and 10 PC's.
I have an old XP laptop, this laptop has a lotus notes database as well as two very large PST files that I'd like to copy to a new PC (win 7 presently) So, I insert my external drive into the XP machine and proceed to copy the files to the external. Copy goes fine. I then connect the external to my win 7 pc and attempt to copy them. I first get a UAC box stating that I need admin rights, so I click okay, or proceed, or what ever the prompt is, and I'm immediately presented with another box that says, you need permissions from.......... click skip or try again. Odd thing is, this is after me taking ownership of said file and granting full access. As a matter of fact when it says I need permissions, it says I need them from "owner" which is me. IT's asking me to give me permissions but I've already got full.

So, I went and found an older thumb drive that was formatted FAT32 instead of NTFS (which is how the external is formatted) and copied one of the same folders from the XP macchine to it, then inserted the thumbdrive into the win 7 machine and it copied NO PROBLEM..didnt ask for any permissions, etc. Since I didnt realize that the NTFS was the problem, I went ahead and formatted the thumbdrive to NTFS. I again copied the desired file from the XP machine to the thumbdrive, then inserted the thumbdrive into the win 7 PC and attempted to tr... Read more

Hey everyone

I have been having strange stuttering issues on my new Pc and i can't figure out whats causing it. Basically it happens randomly and what happens is the game i'm playing or youtube video i'm watching will start to stutter and then make a horrible noise out of my speakers. Its not constant but it happens quite often.

A friend was helping me with the issue last night and suggested that i go into device manager and click the drop down box for Network adaptors and disable 'Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller' as he had heard something before about disabling that solved an issue similar to mine. He said before i do however that i should come onto this forum and get a second opinion on the matter. I suggested that i should buy a sound card as i have onboard sound but he said wait until i have tried absolutly everything to solve the issue.

The issue seems to be most common with Dead Rising 2 but it can sometimes happen with my other games. Whilst in device manager i checked all my drivers and they are all up-to-date. Also if it helps my speakers plug in via USB and not the standard audio input. Any more information you require about my computer please feel free to ask and i am happy to give all information required to solve the issue

Thank you

Sorry if this gets a little long but I'm at a total loss as to what is happening.

I had the same setup for years without a problem, then my router went bad so I got a new one. Everything was fine for about 3 months and then all of the sudden last week my download speed on my desktop computer got really slow. No issues with upload speed only download.

Usually my download speed is between 15-20Mbps but now it's under 1Mbps. I have 2 laptops, one of which is in the same room, and neither of them has a problem. I've gone through all of the channels on the router and changed other settings and nothing worked. I moved the router with no success. I've tried different cables and I bought a new router and new adapter for the desktop and I still have slow speed. Now I'm back to what I had to begin with and of course I still have very slow speed. I even called the ISP just cover all the bases and make sure there weren't any problems on their end.

There is no problem with signal strength and the network speed usually stays at 54Mbps but never drops below 36Mbps when I'm connected.

On the problem computer I have Windows 7 and Vista both installed and the problem is the same no matter what OS I'm in. The laptops I use have Vista and XP, and like I said before there is no issue with them.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GS2 and the adapter I'm using now is a Linksys WUSB54GS v.2. I also tried a WUSB54GC adapter which didn't help.

I already uninstalled and reinstalled flash player, quicktime and real player. I've checked all the audio control panels on the computer and they are fine like I said before the audio is fine with some media players.

There are no dvd players or any other applications open.

Continuing to look for the cause of my problems, I notice that a small area that appears on most webpages (even techguy!) with an identifier "clicksor". I figure this is the source of my problem (or one of them). It is redirecting me to various websites (and collecting a bounty) any time I get the mouse close to that area.

I downloaded and ran the "emergency" repair from Sophos ( a really good AV!). They found a couple of trojans and I deleted them. One keeps coming back - Spyurs-Gen. It creates a file, cmdltrol.dll. After several attempts to kill this file, I edited the contents to remove all code. I'm now getting errors that something can't find that file. I haven't removed the base problem, only the code it used to create my problems.

Anyone know how to remove the Spyurs-Gen? Sophos seems to be the only AV that has any info on it.

Morning all,

Some real oddness going on here. Having some issues with my X-Fi Fatality Champion Card (PCIe).

Basically I am getting sounds reminiscent of a 1940's gramophone coming through both the front bay (via headphones) and through the regular rear jack too. On-board audio is completely disabled through the BIOS.

Here is where the weirdness begins though.... On my rig I have two GTX 460s running in SLI mode. The Sound card is positioned (with ample room) between the two cards. If I completely disable SLI mode, the sound is crystal clear. Turn SLI back on and we are back to the 1940s ...

Initially I thought it was a problem with the MOBO (the mobo was reporting ram incorrectly - turned out to be bad slots) but since the board was RMA'd its made no difference.

Things I have tried so far:

1) Put fresh HDD (Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64) in and installed drivers from scratch and still the problem persisted. The problem would disappear completely when SLI was switched off.

2) Swapped Mobo.

3) Tried the speakers (Logitech 2.1) on a separate machine and they were crystal clear.

My gut feeling is that the PSU is not powerful enough and just wanted other insight to this.

My system spec:

650W Corsair PSU
Intel i5-760 (OC'd to 4GHz)
6GB DDR RAM (4 sticks)
1TB Sata Drive
2 x GTX 460s (Running in SLI)
Fatality Champion Series Sound Card w/ Front Bay (PCIe)
2 x 120mm case fans + Corsair Water Cooler (For the CPU)

A:Really Strange Sound Issues....

Hi everyone, I am having issues with my 2.1 channel Creative T3130 speakers and the sound output from my motherboard (MSI P55-GD80).

At random times, one of the following will occur:
One speaker will get very loud and the other very quiet. Sometimes, one speaker cuts out entirely and all the sound outputs from one speaker. The subwoofer seems to continue functioning normally.
My subwoofer will get treated as a speaker while one speaker is treated like the subwoofer.
My sound driver is the most recent one and was downloaded from the MSI site. I actually uninstalled it and am running using the generic Windows sound driver and I currently have no sound problems. However, this also means that I have little to no control over things like audio balance, room correction, etc.

I was wondering if someone could please help me with this. Thanks.

Hey, I have been Googling and surfing the forums and can't seem to find a similar issue.

Basically, I have a madcatz v7 gaming keyboard and its great, I like typing on it and the lighting effects though a gimmick are pretty cool.

It has been solidly working for the past year but all of the sudden a family member was using it the other day and they told me it suddenly stopped working.

When I came to check sure enough it didnt work either at boot for the bios or in windows. I tried another USB port and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them numerous times including removing them from the registry. As i was also planning on it i preformed a system reformat after a physical component clean and still no joy. thinking maybe its my OS or USB ports I tried it in my laptop and still nothing.

One thing i did notice however is that the media keys, volume, song control still work. But the macro keys and normal qwerty typing do not work.

I am basically at a loss as to what is happening and thought id posts for any ideas.

cheers in advance for any insight and help

I've done scans from norton, malwarebytes, and wisecare 365 and there has been nothing thats shown up. everytime i get warned that a file is even the least bit dangerous I quarantine and remove it.

I'm using a Gateway MX8738

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

My problem... well it's something I've never experienced before. And searches have pulled nothing.

Whenever I stream video on this laptop, I have to move the mouse/trackpad around for the bar to continue loading. Originally I thought this was just graphical and it was actually loading, just not refreshing the bar. No, that is not the case.

It will play until it hits the ending of the bar, and won't continue until I move the mouse to make the bar load.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining it the best way though. I like to think of it like the following: It's like winding up a toy. A very annoying toy.

If anyone has any help, I'd be incredibly thankful.

Windows 8 Pro w/Media Center

1. Firefox will freeze if you try to display anything that requires Flash- I tried to reinstall Flash but when I try to install, literally nothing happens. The cursor loads for 2 seconds then nothing happened. In the task manager, I can see many different processes named "Adobe Flash Player Installer" yet I can't switch to any of them.

2. This goes with the previous problem; I literally cannot run any setup files. Seriously. I can run .exe files, although I tried downloading the media converter SUPER, Flash Player as I said, and Arcsoft Media Converter and when I try to click the install icon the cursor loads for 2 seconds and nothing happens.

3. When I try to play a video on my computer with VLC Media Player, I experience almost the same problem as above except the video does pop up after 5 minutes (seriously). Also, the movie randomly goes back to the beginning sometimes.

Any help?

A:My computer having strange issues lately...

This is apparently a problem with the latest Firefox, and happens on both Windows 8 and Windows 7. Apparently, they released a broken version. I don't seem to have the problem though.

I don't know about your other problems.
