Can't login to my profile--Stuck on Temporary Profile

Q: Can't login to my profile--Stuck on Temporary Profile

The battery is no good on my Gateway laptop, so computer will only run a few minutes when unplugged.  I accidently kicked plug loose from wall and didn't realize it; I saw computer was shutting down due to low battery and I quickly plugged it back in, but it was already powering down.  When I re-booted it, it had to run through all the disk-scans and then when it finally booted, it was under temporary profile and not mine.  I tried to follow directions on Microsoft help forum (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile) to fix corrupted user profile, but their step-by-step instructions don't match up with my computer.

In particular, MS tells me to create a new profile and copy my old profile to the new one.  I created new profile, but it tells me to copy all files except the following: Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, and Ntuser.ini.  On mine, there are 2 Ntuser.dat.log files and I don't have Ntuser.ini.  The other thing I'm not understanding is once I copy them, I can't figure out how to move it all to the new profile.

P.S.  I also tried to change the corrupted profile settings using this method: http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-temporary-profile-windows-7 but had no luck there either.  When logged off/on had the same temporary settings as before.  Plus, the computer is running incredibly slow and locks up a lot when on the internet.  Anytime I have to restart it has to run through disk scan again, which takes about 20 minutes.

P.P.S.  I am deployed to Afghanistan at the moment so I am not able to run to a repair technician, and since my laptop is my primary method of communication/entertainment, I would really like to have it fixed, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi. I'm having this problem where when I tried to log into my computer it gave me this thing that my user login has failed and a temporary profile had been created. I was looking at other form posts with this problem and going through the steps. But while I'm in safe mode at the moment I still can't get into my administrative account on my computer. It won't let me access it because the profile is corrupted(I'm assuming?)

I was using: User Profile Service failed the sign-in - Fix in Windows 8 this thread to help me. But I'm stuck on step five because it just says: profile image path: c:\users\TEMP which is not my user profile but under the .bak it says my correct profile.
I don't have another admin profile. I'm the only person who uses my computer.
Ugh I don't know what the hell I'm doing I'm terrible at this kinda thing.
Please help :'(

I was runnning into some external problems today with internet (a site that was getting overloaded all the time), so I decided to restart my laptop because internet was starting to lag alltogether

When I rebooted, I went to enter my password, and it sent me straight to a temporary profile. I can still access my files, but it's really annoying with all the detours I have to take.

I tried to resolve it following the steps I got from my own 'help' in on my laptop (like that ever works), but I was getting nowhere. Anybody any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

We have users on Windows 7 Enterprise machines.  No one has a roaming profile. Users cannot install programs.  The users move around so they don't use the same machine all the time and there may be 20 profiles on one machine.  They don't
always logout but the machines are restarted once a week at least.   Occasionally we may delete profiles on the machines but this is a remote site so we seldom do.  Users primarily use remote apps. served up either by Citrix or web interface.
Little is done locally other than printing.  All machines are imaged with the same software. All users do the same thing.  One user in an office of six machines, can only login to three of the machines with a temporary profile.  She has no
profile under Users.  There is no .bak registry entry.  I cannot locate anything in the registry that points to this user.  I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|MICROSOFT|WINDOWSNT|CURRENT VERSION|PROFILELIST.  There were 20 profiles but
none for this user.  No .bak profiles for her, nothing.  I found a post that suggested increasing registry size/reboot but still no clue.  This has been going on for months and she just let me know but I don't know if she called the help desk
and they did something before.  Event log has errors saying:

A:Windows 7 Enterprise - User logs in with temporary profile - 3 different machines/no roaming profile?

Thanks.  She's working on the computer and does not logoff and back on quickly.  I just rechecked and there absolutely is not a .bak with her name.  On either computer.  I did find one for Temp and one for another user so now I have a
second user getting the profile issue.  I renamed that one and when the other user logged in, he got his profile.

Guess I will just re-image the computers although I'd like to figure it out but I don't have the spare time to waste and don't want my user to keep getting the temp profile.  My company won't pay for the support and frankly, in all the years I've
been in IT, I've never had MS resolve one issue for me.  Not worth paying for.  Oh well, thanks for your suggestions.  If I have time to devote to this and figure anything else out, I will post the answer.

Hey guys,

Yesterday, I shut down my computer. A few hours later when trying to log back in, I get logged onto a blank profile, which I assume is a temporary profile.

Curiously the ProfileImagePath string under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-842173820-3506557639-1618326103-1004 is pointing to C:\Users\Mike_2.Mike-PC instead of C:\Users\Mike_2, which I assume is a temporary/alternate profile. (which I didn't create)

This has happened before, but usually a few restarts fixed the problem, however, that doesn't seem to be working now.

My question is, is there a way to reassociate the profile with the correct user folder? Or do I have to transfer everything over to a clean profile?

A:Solved: User profile dissasociated from account/logging onto temporary profile?

Its not an association issue, the user profile is corrupt, and is replaced by a temporary one.

Best thing to do is create a new user account, and migrate to that.

It happened for the first time on the 31st of march after a cummulative security update for IE and again today after some stability updates. In between the two dates there was a patch tuesday with around 10 updates, which did not trigger this effect. It appears to be occasional but always concerning windows updates. I get a long loading screen then I'm logged onto a temp profile. From there I am able to log on correctly into my profile, it just puzzles me as to why it does this.

I looked up event viewer but found nothing. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Where is the error that caused a temp profile to logon documented in the logs?

Hi,
I've been trying for a couple days to get my windows seven out of temporary profile mode.
Last weekend I downsized a document partition to grow the windows partition by 15gb, using ubuntu's live-cd gParted program. And now I'm stuck with what to do.
So far I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, rebuildbcd with no luck. (with windows cd recovery console)
I am unable to access any type of administrative tools when i fire up windows (after starting explorer.exe manually). I have a basic windows desktop available to me, but like I said I can't open explorer or control panel, as i get either an error :
"explorer.exe No such interface supported"
or
"::{string of numbers and letters} No such interface supported"
Concerning cmd.exe, I can launch it and explore my partitions but everything else seems locked, and I can't run it as administrator.
It seems like windows has rearranged its letters too; windows used to be on E: but now finds itself on D:, and the cd drive has gone from D: to E:.
Trying to run regedit says that it can't find D:\Windows\regedit.exe and running regedt32.exe is the same.
I hope someone can help,
Thank you

Hey all!

I've been experiencing stability problems on/off with my rig, but now they seem to have been stabilising (hurr durr).

I've recently bought a 1TB harddisk and 4 additional GB of Corsairs XMS3 DHX RAM, bringing me up to a total of 8GB.

Now, I tried to install 6 GB first, in tri-channel mode, and it worked fine.
When I installed the remaining two in dual dual-channel mode, however, my profile will not load, and I am given a temporary user profile. All my personal preferences are gone, including firefox bookmarks, desktop shortcuts, start menu preferences etc.

I'm posting a query to corsair as well simultaneously, but do any of you know or have a clue as to what might cause my problem? Or more importantly: how I can fix it?

I ran the memory diagnostics tool included in vista, and it told me I had a memory problem, but did not specify what.

Thanks for all help. It is much appreciated!

Recently my computer was freezing a lot and I had to shut it down (from the turn on/off button) and I know this is bad.
Yesterday I shut it down like this then I tried to turn it on it didn't load past the "Welcome'' screen and after some time it loaded and a message showed ''You have been logged in with a temporary profile. You cannot access your files and files created in this profile will be deleted when you log off". I tried to log-in in save mode but it did the same thing.

I was going to try ''Repair user account'' to see if it works but i can't see the ''ntuser.ini'' file? (This is about trying to copy the the files from the old account to a new one). And there are 2 ntuser.dat files one is called ntuser1.dat and the other is ntuser2.dat (or something like this) and I don't know which one to copy. Also i tried to copy all the files but it said there's not enough space.

I read some things and it said there is either not any solution or there were some things that worked for SOME people but I'm not very good at computers and in these solutions it said to delete some thing but I'm scared to lose some things in my old account or to ruin my computer!

I followed the tutorial here User Profile - Change Default Location and it worked beautifully... All my user docs are on the D drive and the Start button entires all point to the new location.

HOWEVER when I tried to log in this mornias wand was faced with my normal log in prompt for a password to my profile, it accepted it, and then told me "The user profile service failed to login. User profile cannot be loaded.

It's the only account, so I cannot get in via another account.

I assume it's looking for something on the D drive instead of the C drive (or vice versa) ... But I carefully followed the tutorial. I assume one registry setting is off. ProfileImagePath???

I can only now get in via F8 options. I tried safe mode, but there is no regedit in safe mode And it won't let me create a new account .

I can rebuild yet again (win 7 has not been kind to me) but not sure if my last image was before or after the user profile change

Are there other boot f8 boot options to get me out of the jam??

A:HELP! User profile service failed the login - profile cannot be loaded

Via the help panel I can now get into regedit.... But now what?

I looked at steps 10 to 14 on the tutorial and I have the correct registry setting, ie ProfileImagePath pointing to D:\users\media

So is there another registry item to change?

The ProfilesDirectory key says %systemdrive%\users. Should it be changed to d:\users??

The tutorial went on to say I could delete my c:/users/media folder....which I have not done yet, so I don't thinks it's that.

I have trouble with my "temporary" profile. Every time I log on, I get signed in with a "temporary" profile, where I lose my background setting, and I am missing most of my apps on the Start button, such as the Netflix app, Wordament, and pretty much, most of my apps. I get stuck with a blue background setting, instead of the background profile that I have created, and I always have to log on to Google, YouTube, Facebook, or any other website that I visit each time I visit them, instead of automatically having the computer save my passwords for me so that I don't have to continually log in. I feel that it is a hassle, and I would like to have my old background profile back. I clicked under Settings, and it says that I am logged on with a "temporary" profile, and roaming options are currently unavailable. In other words, I would like to sync my settings---I want to change my profile back to the way it normally was, where I had all of my apps. Please help. Thanks.

hi guys,

whilst messing around trying to change the permissions on an external hard drive, i irresponsibly executed some command or other i found on google. i was supposed to execute it on the external drive but unfortunately i didn't change the drive in command prompt.

problem is - i dont have a clue what the command was!

and now i have the dreaded problem of a TEMPORARY PROFILE every time i log in.

i have found other threads which suggest backing up everything from that profile and then deleting it and reinstating it.

unfortunately - i can't do this,for a couple of reasons -

A. for some reason, permissions on my system are completely messed up. i can't take any files from the folder with the (TRUE) administrator account because i don't have the permissions to,

B. i have a 120gb HDD, 110GB of which is the files for my profile - music, videos, etc. i have nowhere to copy them to!

if anybody has any suggestions or ways to help me i would be extremely appreciative.

the only thing i know about the command is that it was something related to changing an ACL (access control list). looks like i've altered the access to my profile, so that my profile cannot access it, if that makes sense!

i'll post this now and then i'll scour google to try and find the command which i typed.

PS - i've tried system restore, to no avail

A:temporary profile - help!

edit -

i found the command which i entered -

cacls * /G Ant:F /T

("Ant" being the username of the profile)

**EDIT**

backed up the files onto the hard drive root, deleted the account, re-created the account and now i cannot transfer the original users/ant/* folders, into the new users/ant folder, even though all of the permissions are set correctly.

can anyone help me with this?

when i try to copy, using either administrator, or the new "Ant" account, it says -

"You need permission to perform this action", and gives the options "Try again", "Skip" and "Cancel".

**FINAL EDIT**

sorry to waste anyones time, i managed to fix this, i changed ownership of all of the files to administrator, moved them back into /users/Ant, set the new account as administrator, and then transferred ownership from there. For some reason before i took ownership with administrator account, it wouldnt let me take ownership with "Ant", so i had to do it the long way.

hopefully my little self-discussion may help someone else along the lines

ciao!

Hi, I bought my laptop about 2 years ago and have never had any problems with it. It is a Toshiba Equium L40-10Z, and uses windows vista.

For about a month now it randomly closes Internet explorer and says that it has "stopped working". However this wasn't very frequently.

2 days ago I turned my laptop on and tried to log into my profile and entered my password as usual. The welcome page stayed on for about a minute instead of the usual 5-10 seconds, and then the page changed to say that it was "setting up my desktop" or something very similar to this. This then stayed on for about another minute or so. When it finally loaded up it was put on a "temporary profile" with only a few of my usual programs showing on my desktop. A pop up in the bottom corner told me that I could not be logged into my profile and so I was put on a temporary profile and that any changes that I made would not be saved.

I can still use my laptop for things such as accessing the internet however I cannot access any of my files, many of which have important college work in.

I have downloaded music from the internet from sites such as myspace and thisis50, but I regualarly run scans using norton anti virus, and there is only ever 1 tracking cookie that has been there all the time, that has a low risk warning.

hey, I am using windows 8. and I got the free windows 10 upgrade. I tried to upgrade that and I don't it has been upgraded or not but whenever I turn on my laptop it puts me into some temporary profile and because of that I am unable to see my all data and files. They want me to download each and every programs which I already had before. I am getting this notification when I turn on the laptop "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off." I just want to use my original profile with all my important data. Can anybody help to fix it?

This has happened a total of three times, and it's bugging me.

The first time was maybe a month ago, when I attempted to shut down my computer and it said that there were some processes running and that I'd have to "Force Restart." I did so, and when I logged in, my desktop came up looking like I had just installed it, and the little box in the attachment came up.

This has happened two other times recently, but on startup. I'll log in to my account as usual, but instead of "Welcome," it says "Preparing your desktop," and takes forever to load. Then it'll do as I described earlier.

Any idea how to to fix this?

As of today, in our domain environment consisting of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Enterprise machines, we are experiencing the "User Profile service failed the sign-in - User profile cannot be loaded" error message whenever a user tries to login.
This only affects users new to the particular machine. If they have signed on before and already have a cached account the computer logs them in with no issue. This is occurring on both Win8.1 and Win7 machines. We are an academic institution so this is becoming
a huge problem in our labs. Students generally use different computers so this is popping up very frequently. I have a solution for the issue. It appears that on the non-working machines that the "Default" user profile is corrupt. I have discovered
that if I find a machine, Win8.1 or Win7, doesn't matter, that is allowing first time users to logon I can copy the "Default" user profile and replace the corrupt one. I must first permanently delete the corrupt profile before copying over the new
one. I am doing this over the network by navigating the C:\users\ folder. Even this way is becoming cumbersome though as we have over 1000 computer in labs. I have googled and googled and I keep seeing the same answers offering various solutions, none which
are any more practical than my method. I cannot find information on a cause or a reason of why this would just crop up out of nowhere. I suspect maybe a Windows update but I cannot verify that yet. ... Read more

So my standard user account was recently switched over to an administrator account. Now I am logged in with a temporary account. The Temp account only shows up under users when I am logged in. I tried creating another admin account to see if I could delete this one. I'm kinda freaked out. Also, I have no back up as you would need the administative rights to make one. Up until now I haven't had them. Please help!

Also, administrator accounts were switched to standard user

win7 Ultimate - I have admin account, my wife has her own account, and her profile appears to be corrupt. When she logs in we see the error message "you have been logged in with a temporary profile".

Initially, restarting solved this problem for her but now it's happening every time.

I've seen 2 solutions offered, 1 that says delete her profile key with regedit, and another that says run sfc /scannow.

Anyone have a definitive solution to this yet? Was hoping MSFT would release a "profile repair tool" considering how frequent this problem appears to be.

thanks.

Hello. I'm a new member here. I found this site while searching for help.

I have a friend's Toshiba Satellite L70D-A that will not log on to the owner's account. Windows 8.1. Also there is no Wifi. Pop-up says that Windows Wifi is not turned on or a cable is unplugged or broken. I got around this by plugging in a cat5 cable direct to my Ethernet switch.

I found 17 non critical updates that I downloaded and installed. This hasn't helped any. I reinstalled the Atheros wireless network adaptor and this hasn't helped. I tried several online scanners for virus and malware that I found at another computer help site and they have found nothing that has made this computer work properly.

I tried a command prompt to run Sfc/scannow in Safe Mode to fix any errors. Verification phase runs to 77% then stops and says "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
I just read through a post I found by searching about deleting the owners profile and making a new one. I don't know if I can do this and not lose any valuable files she has on the computer. Will any files and folders, pictures, documents, etc. still be available after I delete her account?

Is there anything else I can try?

Thank you for any help and advice...

Glenn

Hey all.

I have started encountering a weird problem on both my desktop and laptop. Every now and then, when I log in, it says Loading Desktop instead of Welcome, and it logs me into a temp profile. The action center says to check the monitor (I don't remember which one), but nothing is there.
Any ideas? Solutions?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, my pc has been working perfectly fine latlely. No shuttering or hangs. No problems what so ever. Until...

I bought the new Kings of Leon CD (deluxe edition, woot) and started to import it to iTunes. It gets to about song three, and then everything freezes up for a sec, then BSOD (FATALITY).

So as my pc is rebooting, im thinking standard procedures should clean this up. Probably a problem with iTunes. Low and behold, when I log in, the Temporary Profile is loaded. Windows proceeds to say logging out, then in, should fix the problem. No cigar.

I turned to the Google, and tried all of the "non-hazardous" solutions. Safe mode, adding a password, creating alternate user profiles, to no avail. From what I've read, it's either a problem with my user registry files, or iTunes.

Now, I know alot about computers, but the registry is just something I don't like to f**k with. Would anyone with a little more experience like to lend a hand? I'd rather not make things worse by flailing around in the OS's sensitive areas.

This morning I powered on the computer and I received the message "Preparing Your Desktop" along with the infamous MS circle.

Then I received a notification in the system tray that read: "You have been logged on with a temporary profile". What???
The message continued, "Log off and try logging back on as Administrator".

I have not changed anything recently nor downloaded anything recently except MBAE (Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit).

My OS is Windows 7x64 Sp-1 .

Never encountered anything of this sort. Prior to shutting down the computer last night I ran TFC and SUPERAntiSpyware as I normally do and nothing significant was noted.

Is this some sort of "glitch" or "anomaly"?

Any rational explanation anyone?

TIA

Temporarary profiles are used by Windows whenever it detects something amiss with the original profile...usual cause is ordinary file corruption/damage.

I have a peculiar problem that I hope you can help with. After coming home from an 18 day holiday, I switched my computer on, after an inordinately long time when the screen was displaying "Preparing your Desktop" I was given a screen that had very few icons on and a legend that stated that I had been given a temporary profile and and any alterations I made would be cancelled on closure. Restart would not help. However (and here is the odd part) if I close down the computer and then switch off at the mains, leaving it off for a minimum of 1/2 an hour (any less doesn't work) the computer will boot up as normal??? Any future restarts or software on/off will result in temporary profile again.
Whilst I can live with this, it doesn't seem right.

Profile must have been corrupted and so got the Temporary Profile on login. Tried the REGEDIT fix, but didn't work, nor did CheckDisk run. Might have to copy profile settings to a new profile and delete original, and if so, would appreciate instructions (or link to instructions) for doing so.

Hi.

So I had an update saying updates would be made before shutting down last week. Since then I've only been able to sign into temporary profiles, and have found my old profile by going to My Computer>C: etc and saving my work onto a USB.

I'm now getting a message saying 'This copy off windows isn't genuine' but I have no idea why!?

Any ideas on how I can sign into my original profile instead of temporary ones?

Thanks

This is for an Inspiron running Windows 7 Home Premium build 7601; service pack 1. It originally had an admin profile and a user profile with admin rights. When it starts up, everything seems fine. Once I click on the profile to load it, though, it tries for about 15-20 minutes or so and then loads a temporary profile. Safe mode with networking works okay. I tried copying all files onto a new profile, but the new profile does the same thing. It might be worth noting that while it is trying to load, if I click Ctrl+Alt+Del, the menu pops up with lock, switch, log off, change password, and task manager. A mouse pointer will come up and I can move it around, but clicking, right-clicking, and double-clicking do not do anything. If I click Task Manager, it does eventually come up, though. Maybe 5-10 mintues later. It shows dwm.exe, csrss.exe, explorer.exe, winlogon.exe, taskmgr.exe, taskhost.exe, hstart.exe *32, Toaster.exe *32, RPLauncher.exe *32, and STService.exe *32. They have memory listed but 00 under CPU for all of them.
Tonight, I made a new user profile with no files, but after almost an hour of loading, I gave up. What should I do? Or, what more information can I provide? Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S. I tried installing Speccy to give you better details, but it goes to the output folder and stops.

A:Temporary Profile Keeps Loading

I recommend scanning your PC with your current anti virus first a full scan before following the steps below. Scan in Normal mode.

Your profile is corrupted follow these steps to create a new one and copy the files over to the new on correctly. First reboot in "Safe Mode With Networkiing" go to Start type in CMD locate CMD.exe and right click on it then select "Run As Administrator" in the command prompt type in then hit enter.

Code:
net user administrator /active:yes
log out then select the Administrator account (profile) then follow the steps in the link under "My Computer is in a Workgroup"

Hi owen and welcome

Your problem might lie in the fact that you may not have admin rights on the domain. Are you in the admin group on the domain?

Hi, hope someone can help.

Yesterday I did a disk fragment with auslogics disk defrag. First time I used this so am not sure if this is the cause or not.

I'm on Windows 7 Home.

This morning I booted and things were okay. But I went out for lunch and since then I haven't been able to open since. Every time I restart I get the temporary profile.

I've tried a few 'fixes' like changing the .bak file in the ProfileList in the registry but that doesn't seem to work.

Hope someone can help. I can't get to my files.

PS. Anyway to get access to the files works for me.

1. It would be great to get the same user (Admin) again. If that's possible.

2. If not, I'm okay with creating another Admin account. (Have done that but can't seem to access the files of the other Admin (problem account)... says I don't have permissions.

Please help. Have been trying different 'tips' on the web for the last 3 hours. Nothing works so far.

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help. I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 around 2 months ago and generally it works fine. However, three times in that time when I boot up, it has told me I have been signed in to a temporary profile. When I reboot my machine, all is fine. I tried to follow the instructions in this thread You've been signed in with a temporary profile - Fix - Windows 10 Forums this morning as I wondered if possibly it is slightly corrupted. I only have one user profile which is an administrator one. Whilst deleting that registry item caused win 10 to recreate my user profile as described, none of my files were accessible and neither was the internet or my emails.

After a major panic, I managed to use my ipad to google and find out how to do a system restore on Win 10, and rolling back to Monday returned my registry to its previous state TG and I can access my files again.

What did I do wrong? And any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

Another issue that may be related is the first time win 10 did this, it deleted a lot of shortcut icons on my desktop - the programs are still on my system and I was able to drag them back onto the desktop and recreate them.

PS - I dont have a windows key on my keyboard either as per the instructions and had to find another way to get into regedit.
