I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It sounds like something is timing out.  It is hard to be sure without swapping either the drive or the MB.  You might go into the BIOS and select diagnostic mode for boot.  That would do a memory test and it might slow things down enough to mask the problem

Today Norton Antivirus began to block threats from Trojan.Zeroaccess.B, Trojan.Gen, Trojan.Gen.2, and Trojan.Zeroaccess.C. I have been prompted to do a manual removal of Trojan.Zeroaccess!inf4 from c:\windows\system32\services.exe. Additionally, Bitcoinminer is being repeatedly detected, blocked and quarantined. I'm not sure if Norton is having a problem deleting/quarantining Bitcoinminer, or if it is actually being downloaded over and over. I suspect that these two problems are related, as they started at the same time.

From what I gather, the fix seems to be quite complicated and I would appreciate some help.

My system is running 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium w/ SP 1. Looking at similar threads, it looks like I'll need to use a flash drive to run removal tools. I do not currently have a flash drive on hand, but I do have an 4 GB SD card. Will that be a sufficient replacement?

Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

That's what the system said, in DOS, on the black screen. Of course, I had my mouse and keyboard unplugged at the time, because I had just unplugged everything to move the computer.

Anyways, I plugged the keyboard and mouse in, restarted the computer, and everything started normally.

My question is, what is with this error? Vista can't boot up if I don't have a keyboard and mouse plugged in? It's not a big deal, but it seems like very odd behavior.

A:Keyboard not detected, Mouse not detected. Fatal Error, System Halted.

This has nothing to do with Vista whatsoever. As you said it showed up on the black screen with white text, which is the boot screen. The computer hasnt even started loading windows yet. The fatal eror occurs because you have no input device. The computer recognises this, and given that they are important, it puts a warning up that there is no connection.
It is completely normal, really, and whatever OS you have, its going to do the same thing.

I did a stupid thing yesterday. I downloaded an icon pack APK file on my computer to upload to my mobile. Anyway, the thing is, when I double clicked on it, BlueStacks (Android Emulator) opened up, and Avast started giving me lots of warnings about BlueStacks accessing Trojan URLs (it blocked them of course).
Now, the thing is: I scanned the APK file both in Malware Bytes Anti Malware and Avast (and even Malware Bytes Anti Rootkit), and it showed no virus or malware found. But when I try to attach the the same APK file as a Gmail attachment (which I read on the net detects viruses, which is why I tried it), Gmail gives me a "Virus found" error.
So, my question is how come such reliable antivirus / anti-malware programs like MBAM and Avast didn't detect the virus but Gmail did? And more importantly, (though I have deleted the APK file in question from my computer) is my computer safe? Or has a rootkit / trojan been installed?

A:Virus not detected in Avast & MBAM, but detected when I upload the file to Gmail

I should have came to this conclusion sooner, but my current re-installation of Windows has some problems that I haven't had the time to address until now. What I need, though, is access to the repair function on the disk. However, herein lies my problem...

When I boot up, media in the drive or no media, bios does not show the drive in its list. I can still open and close the drive as if nothing is wrong there, but I cannot "boot from CD". I've reset my bios back to defaults and while the drive appeared on IDE Channel 1 in the settings, it still would not recognize ANY media while booting up.

I have the latest version of my bios. I have also tried changing cables. The drive is on an IDE channel by itself.

Once my system boots into Windows, however, the drive is recognized and acts normally as if nothing happened in bios. Media operates fine. I have checked the event viewer, and there are no entries anywhere that states my optical drive has been experiencing problems, and yes, in fact it operates just like it always does.

Can anyone help me get my bios and cdrom back together again? The problem is I just do not know where to start to solve this. I wish I could say how long this has been happening, but I really don't know as of today. There have been no hardware changes in the past three months, and my current installation and configuration began back in late April.

Thanks for your time...

A:CD/DVDROM drive - not detected by bios, detected by Windows?

What is the boot sequence in the bios? should be CD or optical drive first, then Hard Drive or IDE-0 second if you want to boot from the cd-drive. Many computer manufacturers set the computer to automatically boot off of the hard drive by default so setting the factory defaults might not be what you are looking for. Look for the screen that has the boot order or sequence and just change it, exit and save settings and restart the computer with the boot cd in the drive. I hope that helps.

Hi guys,

I bought a bluetooth dongle off of amazon so I could use my bluetooth headset with my comp. Once plugged in it installs driver version 6.1.7601.17889 from microsoft and there are no yellow '?'s. When I look for devices it sees my headset no probs but will not connect, which it does instantly with phones / tablets etc.

A very detailed search has brought me to the conclusion that it's a problem with the bluetooth driver, not the headset. Unfortunately there are no identifiers on the dongle itself but device manager seems to think it's:

Device type: Bluetooth Radios
Manufacturer: Cambridge Silicon Radio Ltd

Is there anyway I can detect exactly the chipset in the dongle and get the correct drivers installed? Or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?

I hope you're having a good December. Thanks again for your previous help this past summer!

A scan by TrendMicro picked up several infections, most of which it was able to clean up. But it wasn't able to remove PAR_SE.50425 and PAR_SE.50426. It also says I have a (MS05-004) ASP.NET Path Validation Vulnerability (887219), even though I have automatic Microsoft security updates. The first several minutes of a PandaScan (I didn't have time to finish it) found some SearchMeUp adware.

I'm so sorry, I can't remember how to Hijack This, otherwise I'd post that log, too. Any help you could provide would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

Hello, I recently bought a Probook 450 G4, i7 7500U with 1 TO HDD and 8GB RAM. I wanted to upgrade it with an SSD so I bought a ADATA Premier SP550 2280 M.2 SSD. The BIOS detected it normally, but windows installer wouldn't find it. I removed the HDD and tried again, same issue. I then installed windows 10 on the HDD to try and format the SSD in windows and surprise! no sign of the SSD nowhere, not in browser nor in Disk Managment or Diskpart. Apparently HP disabled the M.2 port in BIOS as mentioned here ( https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/M-2-SSD-Upgrade/m-p/5580822#M3... ) I updated the BIOS the the latest version provided by HP for my laptop model and the same issue is still ongoing, this is a 120$ SSD that I can't use nor return as the problem is the HP product not ADATA's SSD! The simplest solution is in the hands of HP, just release a BIOS update with the M.2 port ENABLED ! why brag about having a M.2 port in your products and then DISABLE it ?! Any insights please ? Many Thanks. PS: I started a new thread yesterday and it is no longer available now ! did HP remove it or what ? it was there for a while and I'm sure! what a shame !

I've been working on this off and on for a week or 2 - searching the net hi and lo, including this site, and can't come up w/anything, so I'm resorting to posting here...

I've just built this PC (configuration should be in sig), and installed Win98SE on it.

I have a SoundBlaster PCI 128 CT 4700 (w/ES1370 chip) that I bought off a friend. He didn't have the original CD w/drivers.

I've downloaded SEVERAL different "updated" drivers from various sources (including Creative), but nothing seems to work.

Here's what happens:

Start PC
Windows sees new hardware and starts installing drivers. About the same time another window pops up:

Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 Hardware not detected. The driver will be disabled.

Press OK, this reveals the window in the bg:

To finish setting up your new hardware, you must restart your computer. Do you want to restart your computer now?

Click Yes...

1)cmos/whatever screens flash, then
2)Windows98 lite blue startup screen

I went to connect today and my dialup connection was gone.  I thought, well, I'll recreate it....but Windows would not let me and said (in the Connect to a Network box):  "Windows could not detect a dialup modem", "Is the modem connected?", "is the modem switched on?"
It is an internal modem.
I went to Device Manager, and there it is as usual, "This device is working properly".

A:Dialup modem detected, but not detected, huh?

Doing some searching gave me this solution:
It is caused by certain services being shut off for unknown reasons.... definitely unknown in my case (??).
Delete or rename the following folder:
(the folder, rtbackup)
However, it has some kind of protection and doesn't allow itself to be so changed.  I did it from a DOS boot disk with NTFS4DOS.
Everything is working.

I picked up a computer off craiglist was thoroughly enjoying my gtx geforce 680 ( https://boston.craigslist.org/sob/sys/6239989909.html ) when it "crashed" about 6 hours after purchase. When I rebooted I received the "no hard disk detected" message. Upon launching bios setup the hard drive is listed with details as being attached to its corresponding sata port. I am trying to determine if my hard drive is broken or if it needs remounting or some other sort of procedure.

The hard drive is a slightly dated WD Carver 1 TB SATA internal drive interacting with an asus motherboard. I did notice the boot order for drives had been rearranged putting an external and an optical disk drive in position 1 and 2 for boot directories. I disabled both the external and optical disc and selected the WD sata drive as the first preference for booting. Still I am getting the same error. I read somewhere that if the bios is recognized in setup but is still not recognized for booting that I may need to run a 32bit diagnostic. The forum I saw the diagnostic post mentioned on was in reference to a dell machine. I don't really know what this is or if it exists on my ASUS mother board.

In short: how can I tell If my hard drive needs replacement?

If Bios recognizing the drive is sign of life how can I get my computer to recognize this drive again?

are there any programs I could download on my laptop and put on my external that could be used to boot and run diagnostics on t... Read more

My laptop has suddenly started running CHKDSK during startup. After it completes and finishes booting I go to Properties > Tools > Error Checking of my C drive and click ?Check?. It says errors were found on this drive and to repair drive now to prevent data loss. I click to run it, the system reboots, I see the prompt to cancel CHKDSK by pressing any key, let it run, the screen remains blank with just the little spinning dots. It finishes (in less than a minute, which is faster than it usually takes) and loads to desktop. I check the C drive properties again and it still says there are errors and to repair.

Running CHKDSK from CMD prompt I get ?Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required.? Running a 3rd-party disk checker (Disk Doctor, Tune-Up Utilities) also reports no errors. Yet the properties dialog continues to warn that there are errors.

I can?t be certain when this started. Just noticed this yesterday when I booted up (I don?t usually stick around and watch the computer boot). Windows has all the latest updates/patches. This is an HP ENVY laptop that came with Windows 10 pre-installed.

Anyone have any ideas?

My mobo is Biostar TA785GE 128M, OS is win xP Pro 32 bit. The drive is detected on all USB ports of mobo, but as soon as I start any data transfer, it crashes and i get error that data cannnot be transfered.

The Disk Management (My Computer - Manage) shows the drive as healthy, but after I start any file transfer, in a few seconds, it reads "Unreadable". Sometimes, the drive letter also goes missing. In brief, the drive is displayed in My Computer till any file transfer is initiated. As soon as any file trnsfr starts, I get error that file transfer is not complete and the drive goes missing.

My frnd's UsB drive (2 GB), and my old 256 mb drive, both work and files are transferred which removes the doubt that there is some prob in USB ports. As the 8gb pen drive works on other PCs and devices, so i guess the drive is okay. I ran HDtune for it, and it has no bad sectors. That leaves my OS as the culprit (I assume). OK - When I look at Device Manager, the modem shows up. When I go to Properties / Diagnostic / Query Modem, it is fine.

When I run Juno, it is able to successfully retrieve e-mail (it just dials and connects).

I CANNOT connect to the web - Juno says that there is no modem installed. Upon further investigation, when I go to Connections and try to add a new connection, I am not allowed a choice of using a modem.

So - Device Manager and Juno E-mail both think that the modem works fine. Connection Wizard and Juno WWW both think that no modem exists.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, to no avail. Oh, and yes, it used to work, and I can't get the user to remember a specific time when it stopped working.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.zip) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to print out and follow all instructions for performing a scan or refer to these instructions with screenshots.Extract (unzip) the file to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the Desktop. Vista/Windows 7 users refer to these instructions. If you don't have an extracting program, you can download TDSSKiller.exe and use that instead.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. When the program opens, click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If 'Suspicious' objects are detected, you will be given the option to Skip or Quarantine. Skip will be the default selection.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller. will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.-- If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. Hi all,

I'm setting up my brother's new computer for him. All working fine except his mobo-HDD connection is the old eIDE and the HDD I have for him is a SATA.

As the title of the thread suggests, when I go to install windows, I receive the notification that the PC cannot detect a hard drive. I have installed an IDE-SATA HDD adaptor on the motherboard. This adaptor (in the IDE slot on the mobo) has both a 4-pin power connection and a cable connecting it to the HDD. I also bought a second adaptor (LP4-SATA connector) as the PSU had no SATA connectors. So both the adapter and the HDD are powered.

The hard drive is a WD Caviar Green 1TB SATAII internal drive. I have already had to replace it once as the first one I sent was damaged on arrival. Admittedly I haven't had the chance to check the integrity of this drive yet, and will do so asap.

However, if we assume that the hard drive is fine, can anyone help me identify what the problem may be? The HDD doesn't need jumper settings set. The only possible reasons I can think of (other than a faulty hard drive) are:
- the 1TB is too large for the motherboard to take
- one/both of the adapters are for SATA, not specifically SATAII (though as SATAII is backwards compatible, I'm not sure this should make a difference)
- the hard drive requires too much power from the 250W PSU (this is unlikely I think)

I have checked the connections multiple times and all seems to be seated correctly and securely. I have pr... Read more

Assuming the drive is pre-LBA 48 then you would still the drive, but only 137GB of it, so this is not the problem, the drive is not too large.

You did not mention what version of Windows your are installing, but I am assuming XP?

What you need to do is make a floppy disk with the SATA controllers drivers on it. During Windows setup you strike F6 to load SCSI drivers, point the install at the floppy and load the drivers, then Windows Setup can see the controller, and drive.

The controller's manual or website should have more precise intructions on this procedure, but the overall gist will be the same.

After this installation will be as normal.

Recently i upgraded almost all of my hardware, including the hard disk drive, and was all set to assemble it all and transfer my files from the old 40GB Maxtor Fireball 3 but it didn't work.

The old drive is not being detected at bootup by any computer I plug it into, not the 'new pc' not the 'old pc' and not my dad's pc either, despite it working perfectly fine up until two days ago.

The disk has Windows XP installed on it though I shouldn't think that has anything to do with it since the bios isn't picking it up at all, it indicates it as "none" after taking an above-average time to scan for IDE drives.

The fault is not with the cable I am using either since that has proven itself at connecting both a seperate hard disk and a dvd-rom drive. Even more confusing is when both hard disks are connected with the same cable, the problem one as a slave, neither are detected.

This is starting to become the bane of my life, if anyone can help I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Just recently, I have aquired an additional PC. It is a Zenith made in, from what I can tell, 1994. Uses mostly DOS, but when it's scan program, called SASSy, runs through the files, it has quite a few Windows files. So I'm assuming that it is Windows 3.1, which I have never dealt with. It does run with Pentium (tm), and has a floppy disk drive and a CD-ROM drive. I'm having trouble getting the hard drive to recognize the CD-ROM drive.
The CD-ROM is a NEC MultiSpin 6V, Model # CDR-1350a. I have downloaded (on our other computer) the installation disk and the CD-ROM driver, on a floppy disk and tried to install them. No luck! There is power going to the CD-ROM because the light comes on when I insert a disk.
What I am ultimately trying to do is upgrade the PC to Windows 98. I am not very familiar with DOS or Windows 3.1. Can someone, please, help me!

Is your other machine running windows 95/98? If so do you have a start-up disk which you could try booting from? If you do this should pull in the cd-rom drive and you can then install windows 95/98 from there. You do not say whether this is an intermittent fault or you have never been able to use it, perhaps trying a different data cable would be an idea?

I am helping my friend repair his laptop. He has a mapletronics brand laptop(no tech support) and his HDD is not being detected. I dusted the HDD port and the outside of the HDD and still no response. I can run LiveCDs, etc. I tried installing XP on the computer to see if that would fix things, but the install could not continue since the HDD was still not being detected. Here's a link to the HDD he's using:

I've never done any laptop hardware repairs except for installing RAM/replacing batteries, etc. The laptop is a Nexlink CL51-15.
Any suggestions about what I should do?

Howdy folks... I'm embarking on an excursion into a totally new subject for me, so please pardon any misunderstandings or dumb questions.

I have an older Dell desktop (P2, 400MHz) with a DVD player (no burner). The instructor in my Tai Chi class has a DVD he would like to duplicate for his students and therein lie the problem. He (nor I) can get the DVD to be detected on our PC's. The DVD plays just fine in the DVD player which is part of my home entertainment system connected to the TV, but when I insert it into the DVD player on my PC.... zero, nada, zip happens. I've tried finding it with the built in DVD player, windows media player and Irfanfiew. No joy. I've also tried to detect it with Windows Explorer. I get "device is not ready". Any ideas out there or things to try???

I have a big problem, my cpu fan no longer works. as of late for the past two years I the fan has made loud humming sounds and sometimes screeching sounds (sounds like two pieces of metal are rubbing together). this happens mostly when i play some sort of media file. I've removed the fan to to check if it was broken or needed replacing but it was fine from what i saw. (it did have alot of dust though) only this morning though i was downloading something and surfing the web when the computer just completely slowed all together for about 5 minutes and then shut down on me. Where there used to be a green light blinking by the power button was now a red light. I think the cpu might of overheat.
The computer is compaq presario and its 5 years old, is this normal for an older computer.
How can i get the fan to work again.
I have a 2 ghz intel processor if that helps. ask if you need any more info

A:511 cpu fan not detected

The fan bearings are probably fried so chances of getting it to work are slim and it will just die again.

Look for CPU heatsink/fans at http://newegg.com or http://zipzoomfly.com
Some good ones are Zalman, Thermaltake, and Arctic Cooling
You will need to know your CPU socket type to choose one.

Edit: Of course that doesn't help you today or tomorrow. A 2GHz CPU may run with no heatsink fan if you open the side of the case and aim a fan at it (while you are waiting for a new one).

Hi everyone, just like the title suggests I am having issues getting a mic to work in Windows 7. I have a little Logitech headset that was functioning until earlier today, and to the best of my knowledge I did not change anything on my computer to make my mic be disabled. I'm not overly competent with technology but I can follow instructions well enough.
I have tried:
1) Simple restart
2) Going into recording devices and showing disabled devices
3) Making sure my microphone is not muted
Under recording devices I have "Microphone", "Line In", and "Stereo Mix". When I plug the mic from my headset into the audio recording jack (the pink one) Realtek HD Audio Manager opens a window and asks what device I plugged into the audio jack and I select Mic In, though I also tried Line In and Headphones to no avail. When I went into my drivers and looked at my Realtek drivers and AMD HD Audio drivers they were up to date. I believe in my recording devices there should be an option for a head set, but it is not present so I can't manipulate any settings for it. If I unplug my headset while the recording tab is open it says my Microphone is unplugged, so I am not sure what to do. If I speak into my mic the green/grey bars next to the device do not light up. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this? Sorry if this is in an incorrect thread, thanks for any help offered in advance.

One of my clients says many sites such as paypal, detect and give him a message that he is using an older browser (or a couple sites tell him to upgrade to Win 8). I had him check the "about" and it shows Internet Explorer 9.

This is what he gets from paypal:
Update your browser: It looks like you're using an older browser that may have known security issues. Help protect your account
Doing a search, I found this can happen if the website is not detecting the browser properly. paypal must be detecting it properly as I do not get the message with my I.E.9

I haven't been to his location to actually check what he has, just e-mails so far.

Hello everyone, I've recently bought a SSD so that I could improve my old work machine. I successfully cloned the Windows 10 partition and moved it from the old HDD to the SSD. The swap was successful and the difference in speed noticeable...The problem I have comes with the old HDD. I wanted to use it as a second storage drive, so I bought a compatible Caddy. The drive was wiped completely, however it does not work on the laptop... It isn't listed in the BIOS and isn't detected in Windows either. -The HDD is in working order. I've performed basic tests with a diagnostic app from Seagate(the manufacturer) which it passed, and the HDD itself is working fine on a PC(where I performed the tests).-The Caddy is also in working order... I've tested it with a different SSD inserted in it and it is detected by the BIOS and windows. Does anyone know what I could do to make it work? This is really frustrating... Aside from the fact that you should have updated to SP3 already, it's likely a hardware fault.

Uninstall the USB controllers in Device Manager and reboot.

hi, I have a pavilion G6 HP laptop. it works fine . I want to give it to my wife so I bought a new 500 GB SATA HDD. fitted it but for some obscure raison it is not detected. I pressed f10 to get in the CMOS , I cant see where the hard drive is. in the main section of the CMOS the only thing I am able to change is the date and the time
.and diagnose memory and HDD. unfortunately there is no HDD there. I looked for SATA configuration , nothing. so I put the original HDD back in the lap top and it works fine. I then connected my external SATA driver reader, it recognises the new drive. so I reopened the laptop and swapped the old drive for the new one , still not detected. I tried installing window and after loading some of the software it stops and a blue screen comes on saying that there is no HDD in the machine. I'm lost. any idea why this happens ?
thank you
