I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This one has me really stumped!

I installed free Windows 10 yesterday and, after using it for a while, decided that I don't like it so I rolled back to Windows 7 by re-imaging to an image I saved just before installing W10. I immediately noticed that Windows Update would no longer work. After a lot of searching, I found that Background Intelligent Transfer Service was missing. It was not in my services. I tried everything I could find in various forums with no luck. Windows Update worked right up until the I installed W10.

I finally found a MS article on how to put BITS back and it worked. I then checked it's dependencies and made sure they were there and working but Windows Update still wouldn't work.

I then re-imaged back to an image 5 weeks old and BITS doesn't show up there either even though it definitely worked back then. That was a mystery since my PC should have been re-imaged to exactly how it looked back in June.

Thinking I might have a bad sector on my drive, I ran Disk Check with the option chosen to repair anything it finds that is wrong. I also ran sfc /scannow. No luck.

I'm at loss to explain this let alone fix it. I found lots of threads where other people lost BITS but not when they had just installed W10 and then rolled back to W7. Nothing I found has worked and I'm at my wits end at this point.

This all started with the W10 install but I don't know how my old images could be affected.

I can usually fix any PC problem... Read more

Even before Windows Vista is out of the gate, the next Windows chief, Steven Sinofsky, is making his presence felt by bringing in a new head of engineering to replace longtime Windows dev chief Brian Valentine.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer reiterated his disappointment with the decisions Microsoft made in developing Vista.

"We will never repeat our experience with Windows Vista again, we will never have a five-year gap between major releases of flagship products. But we will have people who are working on innovations that take more than a couple of years or so to do, we just won't promise them to customers and hold up whole releases.

Start in safe mode
Start in safe mode with prompt
start in safe mode with networking
Windows will restart in 30 seconds

It takes several trys to get it started in any of these modes. After this occurred the first time I found an icon on my desktop titled:

Look down farther on the screen when u get those 4 options, there will be a few more. One will be "start windows normally" do that and see what happens.

That file is just an error log file. DOnt worry about that being there for now. But keep posting the errors if this happens.

We had a storm the other night and my computer was on. The power went out and when it came back on, it starts to boot and then I get a black screen that says

We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused.....

It gives me options to try to restart Windows XP as normal, or using the last known good configuration. I have tried both of these and it starts to boot up and then immediately restarts and goes back to the black screen with white letters. It also gives me options to start in Safe Mode, with networking, or command prompt. (i don't know if I feel comfortable with that)

What happened to it? I've never had any problems like this?

A:Windows XP begins start up then immediately shuts down

To successfully use the Last Known Good Configuratioin option, first after you turn on the power, immediately start to tap the F8 key. This should open the 'Safe Mode" window (black window with white lettering) Use the arrow keys to move up to the above option click enter. Let the computer do it's thing.
Post back and let us know how it goes.

I turned on my Dell Inspiron 15 laptop this morning. I had created a Dell backup disc last night in which was on a DVD, and was still in the drive when I booted up this morning. It began the 'installing new apps, almost ready, don't turn off PC...etc" and then says 'Let's Go' and then nothing happens. Black screen, OR it will go to my same old Microsoft Account sign in, I sign in and I keep getting this press CTRL ALT DELETE or Windows Security button to login. I log in with my password and it will not go to desktop or do anything else. Just keeps switching back and forth. I was able to get to the "Shut down, task manager...etc" and I click on task manager and still nothing happens. Last night I was messing with the screen's resolution. I don't know if this has something to do with it? I had read to hook it up to another monitor but I still get the same thing on the TV screen when hooked with HDMI cable. So I don't think it's the monitor? I also read something about a 'bootmgr' file? Please someone help me, this laptop is driving me absolutely insane. I was also messing with the MMC, in which I can't change user accounts because I'm on a 'domain'? Maybe I'm asking too many questions in one post but I need just a nice, clean reinstall factory setup to download to a USB and go from there. I can boot to UEFI/Legacy mode and I have no idea what to do from there. I have NO options of 'factory restore', and I don't know how.

Microsoft begins denying updates to some Windows 7 users

Microsoft this week began blocking Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs equipped with the very newest processors from receiving security updates, making good on a policy it announced but did not implement last year.

But the company also refused to provide security fixes to Windows 7 systems that were powered by AMD's "Carrizo" CPUs, an architecture that was supposed to continue receiving patches.

The decree that led to the update bans, whether allowable or not under Microsoft's new policy, was revealed in January 2016, when the company said making Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 run on the latest processors was "challenging." Microsoft then ruled that Windows 10 would be the only supported edition on seventh-generation and later CPUs and simultaneously dictated a substantial shortening of support of both editions.

The biggest impact was on Windows 7, because it had become the standard in enterprises -- Microsoft's most valued customers -- with deployment shares far north of 50%. According to Microsoft, Windows 7 was to be fully supported on sixth-generation processors -- Intel's were dubbed "Skylake," AMD's included Carrizo -- until July 17, 2017. At that point, some Skylake-equipped PCs would continue to receive some security updates; other such PCs would get nothing.

Microsoft later walked back the cut-off, first by extending the end-of-support date to July 2018, then by repudi... Read more

When I begin playing an audio file on the computer, CPU and memory use spike (I think the CPU goes up to 50%) for the next 2-3 minutes. The audio player software hangs during that time, and no sound comes out.
After the 2 or 3 minutes have passed, audio playback resource use drops to normal and remains that way.
The usage spike happens only the first time the audio player is used after booting. After that, it operates normally even if the program is closed and reopened, or if another audio player is used.
The problem occurs in the same way no matter which audio player I use (foobar2000, mpxplay, 1by1) and no matter what file format is played (mp3, FLAC, ALAC).

The Task Manager seems to show that audiodg.exe is using a lot of CPU during this time. I say "seems" because the CPU number under audiodg.exe seems to go up to 7 or so, but I haven't seen it reach anywhere near 50 or 100.
All the Enhancements for playback devices are unchecked.

This problem has begun within the past year, I think, on a 4-year-old computer. I haven't changed any audio settings manually.

This isn't a fatal problem, but it does make my computer unusable for 3 minutes each day. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

A:Resource use spike when audio playback begins, Windows 7

From your description, I would say its not really an audio problem, but the audio is byproduct of whatever is causing the problem.

One suspect is memory (RAM). With only 2GB of RAM that is a very low amount. I would suggest upgrading to 4GB of RAM, if the PC will support that as the first step. The CPU is probably a bottleneck too.

I run Win XP and use Framemaker 5.5

The mouse I use has a rolling cylinder (in between the right/left-click buttons) which in most applications allows you to scroll down without clicking inside the window you happen to be in.

But it does not work in Frame. (You have to click and point inside the vertical navigation bar of the window.)

The scrolling/rolling mouse feature works in all other applications (Internet Explorer; Outlook; etc)

Any hints or tips on how to fix Frame 5.5?

Has anyone had any other (and more major) compatibility problems running Frame 5.5 on Win XP?

Ta!

I managed to fix this, and here is how, in case anyone was interested >>>

Frame does not support mouse rolling at all.

But the latest versions of some mouse driver software does manage to work around this lack.

I downloaded the latest mouse driver from the mouse manufacturer (Newmen) website, and I can now scroll in Frame.

Not only that - my entire PC is working about 3x its old speed.

The windows default mouse drivers are nowhere near as good as the drivers that are designed for the particular mouse that you might have.

Microsoft is working diligently towards a release of Windows 10 that is targeted towards consumers which should arrive in late January. One of the features that will be coming -- and Neowin was the first to bring you details on it -- with Windows 10 is Cortana. While there have been tons of assets for the feature found in the builds, including all of the sound files, you have not been enable turn it on.

And while Microsoft builds out the infrastructure to support Cortana on the millions of Windows PCs that are expected to be sold with Windows 10, they have begun letting select groups use the feature. We have detailed a lot about the future of Cortana and Windows, which you can read about here, and now we have the first screenshot showing the icon in the taskbar.

This image has been floating around for a little bit and it took us some time to actually confirm that this is an authentic image. The user has the high-contrast theme turned on which is why the taskbar looks a bit different than most Windows 10 builds. But this is a real image of Cortana in the taskbar in Windows 10 which shows that it will replace the search functionality as expected.

Last year, I took the free upgrade to Windows 10 and for reasons, I want to roll back to Windows 7 using the Recovery Manager, which contains the recovery for Windows 7. The problem is that using F11 on startup doesn't do anything, and the Recovery Manager application (Rebecca.exe) doesn't work even after using the DOS application to make it Windows 10 compatible (as posted earlier on this board). Rolling back is urgent for me.

A:Rolling back to windows 7 using Recovery Manager

chi7b Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no simple way for you to NOW, rollback to Win7. First off, the Win10 Upgrade is known to, in some cases, corrupt the OEM Recovery information, thus rendering the HP Recovery process useless.  You discovered this when you tried to use F11 to do a rollback. Second, the Win10 GoBack function is designed to only work for the 30 days period following the initial Win10 Upgrade.  After that, Windows Update automatically removes the restoration files and the GoBack will not function anymore. And third, the Win10 GoBack function is know to be unreliable, and even when it does work, it can leave machines in a corrupted state such that only a factory reset gets them working again. Your only recourse at this point would be to order HP Recovery Media.  his is a set of DVDs and a CD that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.  You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update".  If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, ... I'm running Windows XP SP2. Downloaded the Windows Live setup utility, so I could install Mail and Messenger ? they download fine, but during the installation they always end up rolling back, not getting installed. It happens no matter which Windows Live tool I use.

Here's the error I'm given.

I don't know what could causing the problem. I don't have a firewall blocking it. Nothing weird set up which could be conflicting with it (it's a pretty fresh, standard install with not much beyond Firefox, Office 2007 and Google Desktop installed). I've set up Windows Live Messenger perfectly normally on other machines in my home network. The problem persists after reboots and re-downloading the installer.

Any ideas? I'm stumped. Would love some help with this.

A:Windows Live installers keep rolling back.

From what I read, the problem is a 'stuck' install.

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, run it (carefully) and locate the Messenger install and delete it from the list.

Then try again.

In less than two days, PC users will be able to manually install the Windows 10 Creators Update with the Update Assistant tool. With such little time to spare, Microsoft has released two new cumulative updates with some last-minute fixes.

For Insiders that are in the Release Preview or Slow rings, you'll find KB4016251, or 15063.13. Naturally, it contains all of the fixes that were included in 15063.11, along with the following:

We fixed an issue where printer connections from clients running older versions of Windows (V3-XPS-based-drivers) failed to connect to clients running the Windows 10 Creators Update.
We fixed an issue where on some devices like the Surface Pro 3, the Windows audio device graph isolation would max out CPU utilization due to being stuck in an endless loop due to defective Realtek APOs.
In the Fast ring, build 15063.14 is available (KB4016252), which includes everything that you see above, along with one more fix:

We fixed an issue where non-suspendable processes would suspend after waking a device.
Of course, if you don't manually install the Creators Update on April 5, the rollout begins on the 11th. At first, it will be available to newer PCs and devices that Microsoft has tested with its OEM partners, and then it will be made available to older devices over the next several months based on feedback.

So my computer recently did an automatic update, but when it started back up it was completely impossible to connect to any network. The pre-bundled software that came with my wi-fi adapter crashed to desktop whenever it started up (manually started or on computer startup). I also could not access adapter settings in the Windows control panel. It would not even open the window for it. So I went into settings and went back to the previous update and the problem went away, but now it keeps reinstalling this update every time i restart my computer.

My current thoughts and I might be wrong:
-The update wasn't downloaded properly and it keeps reinstalling from a broken cache. (Are windows updates cached on my PC?)
-The update is bugged and I need to find out how to disable automatic updates until this is resolved.
-Nothing is wrong with the update, it just doesn't like my current configurations.

Specs:

A:Windows update breaks wi-fi. Keeps reinstalling after rolling back.

Can you connect with Ethernet cable? Let the computer update. Press the Win key+X and choose Device Manager. Expand Network Adapters. Right click your WiFi adapter, choose Properties/Driver/Roll Back Driver to the driver that was working before.
If that is not an option, please provide the make and model# of your computer/motherboard. Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site and download the WiFi driver for your make and model #.

Hi,

I have encountered a small but irritating problem- recently I decided to 'upgrade' my Windows Media Player from version 9 to 10 (I am of course aware that there is now a version 11).

Anyway, I really didn't like version 10 so I followed Microsoft's instructions on how to 'roll-back' to 9. It worked ok and I now have version 9 back except for one irritating difference, which appears to be a feature of version 10 and remained when I 'rolled-back' to 9.

(I will try to describe it clearly so people will know what I mean- apologies if I do not use the correct terminology).

In Windows Media Player 10 (just like version 9) if you go to 'Media Library' and click on the + symbol next to 'my playlists' (on the left side) it will 'expand', listing the various albums and recordings by title. If you click on one of these titles, you will then see on the right-hand side the names of all the tracks in the chosen playlist.

In Windows Media Player 10, underneath the list of songs in the chosen playlist on the right, there was a window or 'panel' which could be dragged up or down by using one of those 'double-headed arrows' that appear when you point the mouse at the dividing lines. In Windows Media Player 10, this appears to be for the purpose of displaying 'media info'.

When I rolled back to 9, this window or 'panel' was still there (it had not been there before I upgraded ... Read more

(Windows 7, 64-bit, all Windows Updates up-to-date as of two days ago before I installed Windows 10.)
This problem really has me at my wits end. I've spent hours on various forums trying to find a solution but have had no luck.

Yesterday, I installed the free Windows 10. The day before that, I created a backup image in case I didn't like W10 and wanted to roll back to W7.

Well, I didn't like W10 so I re-imaged to my W7 backup image. I immediately noticed that Windows Update wouldn't run. After doing some research, I found that Backround Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) was no longer in my services even though it was there in the backup image since Windows Update worked until I installed W10.

I ran sfc /scannow and Disk Check (with the feature to repair any problems found checked) but nothing was found with either tool

I then re-imaged to backup that was five weeks old. BITS was still not in my Services (?).

I did find a tool to reinstall Windows Update and, after running it, BITS did show up in my services although it's not there now because I did the second re-image after running the tool. But Windows Update still wouldn't run. It's set to automatic and it is running. Also, the dependencies are running too but Windows Update still won't run. When I try to download the MS fixit tool for Windows Update, I can't download it or run it even though I tried to get it from several different websites. If I click on Run, Save, ... Read more

What software did you use to make and restore the Windows 7 image ?

Did the image you made include the small System Reserved partition at the start of the hard drive ?

Hi Sir(s)/Maam(s). Can you pls help me? So i tried to install a Kali Linux rolling in my HP Probook Laptop pre-installed with a Windows 7 ultimate 32bit. I googled the machine of my laptop and it says it can support 64 bit. Then i followed instructions on how to (dual boot) Kali Linux with Windows 7. so i followed the instructions only that since the instructions written in the website: You are being redirected... showed a portion Using a tool "Gparted". This did not show up while i opened "Kali Live"(as in the instructions), and i thought to myself maybe it ddnt show an option - "gparted" bcause the kali they were using to install is an old kali while i'm installing a new 2016.1 kali rolling 64bit. so i went ahead and clicked graphical install. so the installation went on(Kali Linux) to an option where it says - Partition Disk(so my thoughts were correct i thought) then i went to a partition where it said "Separate/home partition" so i thought maybe it'll separate my windows 7 partition automatically. then it displayed the partitions it made so i thought maybe i was doing everything right.(as shown here You are being redirected...). And then installation was complete and it requested to reboot so i went and rebooted it. now i was expecting to show options where i can choose where to reboot Kali Linux or Windows 7. Now it only shows Kali Linux. . Did i delete my windows? i had so much important data there... Can someone ls help me? P... Read more

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting our MP3 player (Creative Zen Touch) to work on Vista. It's finally being recognised as a device, but Windows Media Player 11 does not recognise it so I can't add any music to it - which kinda defeats the object!

I think I need to rollback to Windows Media Player 10, which apparently will recognise it, but I realise after a bit of mind boggling research that this is easier said than done. Can anybody help me with this problem? Is there an easy way to do it?

Many thanks for reading my plight!

A new cumulative update is rolling out to Insiders that are on the Release Preview ring, which is build 14393.726 for both PC and Mobile. The new update comes exactly two weeks after the last one that reached the Production ring, 14393.693.

As you should be able to guess by now, there is no changelog available just yet. It's unclear why the company seems to have so much trouble with publishing release notes at the same time that an update is released, but if Microsoft does publish them, they'll probably show up in the Feedback Hub.

Also, it's worth noting that if Microsoft doesn't offer a changelog at all, it certainly wouldn't be the first time, so you probably shouldn't hold your breath for this one. We've reached out to the company for comment.

First spotted by Windows Central, the update will show itself as KB3216755 on PCs. If you're already on the Release Preview ring, you can grab it on your device by checking for updates. If not, you can always go to the Windows Insider Program tab and click "Get started".

I'm clean installing Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit on some Dell Vostro 3560 laptops, after installing the drivers I run Windows Update, it detects 200+ critical updates, downloads them and nearly installs them all before I get "Failure To Install
Windows Updates - Rolling Back Windows Updates" and they roll back.
It's been two years or so since I've clean installed Windows 7, is there some prerequisite that's required now that I'm missing?

A:Upgrading windows 7 to windows 8 beta with windows 7 recovery partitio

Without seeing the disk management screen (start, search, type diskmgmt.msc and <enter>), it is hard to be sure how your partitions are set up.

If you post a screenshot (Alt+PrtSc) open Paint, paste, save, and post the image (insert image button above Reply to Thread text box here) in your next message we may be able to advise you better.

GImageX is a third-party graphical version of the ImageX command-line tool from the Windows AIK.

With the release of the Windows 7 beta and also the beta of the Windows Automated Installation Kit I’ve updated GImageX to work with these new beta versions. I’ve also tidied up parts of the documentation around installation and tweaked the “mount” functionality to provide better feedback during the operation.

Please note that GImageX is a third-party tool so please remember that you won’t be able to ring up Microsoft PSS to get support with it! However, it uses the official Microsoft published WIMGAPI SDK which is a supported way of working with WIM files. Richard Smith.

Trying to install the update but having a problem with the instructions listed below.

"1. Select and copy the following to your clipboard:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

2. Click on “Start”, then “All Programs”, then “Accessories”

Right click on “Command Prompt”, then click on “Run as administrator”
In the UAC prompt, verify that the program’s name is “Windows Command Processor” and then click “Yes”
Right click on the “Administrator: Command Prompt” window’s black area, then select “Paste”
Press “Enter”, you should see “The operation completed successfully”.
If you see “ERROR: Access is denied”, please make sure you followed Step 3.

Close the “Administrator: Command Prompt window”
This script above simply removes the configuration change, and will prevent future CEIP related crashes. The above fix is permanent, and will only need to be run once."

When it says "Right click on "Command Prompt", then click on "Run as administrator" I right clicked but there is no "Run as administrator" option ? There is a run with parameters or a run as..what do I do next ? Thanks

Easiest way, install it in a virtual machine. I'd suggest downloading either VMware Player 3.x or VirtualBox, install it, and then install Windows 8 as a VM.

I do absolutely everything in a VM, haven't dual booted in forever.

Recently released Viber desktop for PC is rather disappointing with their support info. The system requirements page has no info on the required hard drive space needed. I am currently installing this app on a lenovo G560 running windows 8 pro x86 and so far over 0.5GB has been downloaded and the installation has not even started. Can someone who has this software inform me on how much HDD space is required for download /installation /running of this application?

Now I killed the Viber app after Windows start and work ok for 3 hours.

The viber.exe file version is 3.1.1.60
