X1 Carbon 3rd Will Not Boot - I have 3 motherboards & None Work?

Q: X1 Carbon 3rd Will Not Boot - I have 3 motherboards & None Work?

I cannot get my X1 Carbon to boot it's baffling me. I have three motherboards I can try the same thing with. I am almost certain is has to do with the CMOS battery. Symptoms:- Laptop Flashes Three Lights on Logo (Unless I unplug/replug the CMOS battery)- If I unplug/plugin the CMOS, I can get the keyboard to light up then it shuts off.- The fan does not spin because it does not startup.- I used to get a 3 error beep code on one motherboard, however this had to do with the screen which I replaced and it fixed the beep.- I get no error beep codes. Tried:- Pressing the CMOS reset button doesn't seem to do anything (Top right, very small near hinge)- Unplugging the CMOS battery, Putting the AC in, and Pressing power lights up the keyboard for a moment. Replugging the CMOS battery back in seems to disable everything.- Pressing the Reset (Mid-left) usually where a pin goes.- Flushing out static with battery/adapter removed by holding power.- Switching the battery to ac, both, and none with everything above.- Tried with some components unplugged, it doesn't matter -- none of them nor all of them unplugged do anything. I have search many places and I have never had this happen, it can't be possible that I have three bad motherboards. In fact, two of them were factory tested as working. Could it be my power switch? If it was, why would I get the red flashing lights? Does anyone have any idea what I should try?

Preferred Solution: X1 Carbon 3rd Will Not Boot - I have 3 motherboards & None Work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: X1 Carbon 3rd Will Not Boot - I have 3 motherboards & None Work?

When you unplugged the CMOS battery, did you also disconnect the main battery? A shorted screen can cause the symptoms. I would believe a bad screen before 3 bad motherboards.

Help.

My daughters Sony P4 3ghz HT Vaio desktop has always had problems - mainly motherboard related but recently one of her two screens starting intermittently blanking out for a second or so. As it is now out of warranty I decided to try and salvage the good bits and put together a box that could last her for the next year or so.

So I took the following existing bits out of the Sony Vaio

- Pentium 4 cpu 3ghz hyper threading
- 1.5 gb of RAM (2 x Kingmax 512mb DDR-400 and 2xProMOS 256mb DDR-400)
- Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis 256gb vid card
- Hard drives and DVD drives
- Dell 1905 lcd screens

And added them to the following new components

- Antec Sonata II case (with Antec 450 p/s)
- Intel D965PERL mobo - and when that didn't work (see below)
- ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE Socket 478 mobo
- new 200gb hard drive

Problem is that on both the Intel and the ASUS mobo, the PC powers up but nothing happens - the screen remains blank, no sound is emitted (e.g. no beeps under POST) and nothing happens. There is a momentary lighting of the lights on the keyboard (connected by PS2 or whatever that old non-USB connector is called) and the DVD drive will ight up and open/close but no boot screen etc.

I did a quick search here and tried the following - none made any difference

- swapped out the cpu for another (older) 478 P4 I have in another Vaio
- tried a total of 4 different vid cards (and verified that 2 were working on other PC's)
- tried removing... Read more

hello all,
i have had an old p4 motherboard and p4 2.0ghz processor lying around, soi decided to give it to my dad so he can upgrade his archaic P3 system. but, hes got alot of important data and programs(some irreplacable) installed on one hard drive and backup data on another hard drive. he boots from this 120gig hd, and i would like to just be able to boot from that on the new motherboard, but this doesnt always work. i have had 2 experiences in the past with this problem, once i was able to doa windows repair install and it worked and the other time, recently, i did the same and i still could not boot from the same HD on a new motherboard (switched from asus p4s800 to p4p800se), and had to install windows on a new hard drive.
anyway, i just dont nkow if there is an easier way to resolve this issue. im thinking of just installing windows on the hard drive that doesnt boot assuming i can transfer all the data to the boot HD.

A:changing motherboards, how to make sure i can boot properly

New motherboard = new hardware that the original OS will not recognize. You would be better off installing Windows to a new hard drive and keeping the other drives as slaves on your other controllers. I would do the install of the new OS with the old drives completely disconnected to lessen the possibility of losing the data on them.

Several keys in my mother's 6 month old X1 Carbon 4th Generation are no longer working (Q/W/E/N). This is a Windows 10 64 bit machine. The problem, when first encountered, seemed to last a couple of days and would go away. Now however, it has been a week and the keys are still not working. She has had to resort to using the on-screen keyboard to log in to the machine since some of those characters are in her Windows password. I've had her downloaded and run a Lenovo Solution Center scan that run for 12 hours and gave the following message: final Result Code: W1CKMFDU8-9735T2 Any ideas how to interpret this code? I've had her try all the keyboard troubleshooting tips to no avail and would welcome any insight.

Hi, I've only had the x1 carbon 2017 for ~3 months now but suddenly every port on it has failed. Both USB Cs don't recognize the charger and the usb ports don't recognize any USBs. If the charger is plugged in it simply won't recognize it and the LED will not light up. I tried the charger on my phone and it works so it has to be something with the laptop. If anyone might know anything that could solve this please let me know!

I cleaned the keyboard of my X1 carbon today, which inevitably involved pressing  all  keys on the keyboard randomly. Immediately after the cleaning, the speaker can't produce any sound. Headphones work fine. I checked the sound option in control panel, and everything seems to be working normally. The green bar that shows the changing volume of speaker perfectly respond to the system and browser, except no sound is actually produced. It also shows that the sound card is working fine. Does that mean that my speakers are broken? Is there any way to tackle the issue or check the status of the speaker? Thank you.

I just got my Thinkpad X1 carbon 5th gen. Almost everything works fine, but the ethernet extension cable does not work. I can see the network adapter in the network connections, but it says that the network cable is removed I just pluged in the ethernet extension cable and connected it with the LAN. But the adapters LEDs do not blink. They just do nothing. So I tried the same LAN cable with an USB 3.0 ethernet adapter and it works. The device manager does not show any hardware or driver problems. What am I doing wrong? Is there a bios options that must be enabled or any other way to enable it?

Hi, I own a new X1 Carbon (with the terrible adaptive function keys), and my combo audio/mic jack does not seem to work properly. Specifically, when I try to plug in headphones (or use an application like Skype) while the sound is running from the speakers, it does not switch. Conversely, if I start a video wearing headphones, and unplug them, the sound does not come out of the speakers. Can someone please advise how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave0888,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Audio port on ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Please set the default setting on Realtek High Definition audio application from control panel.
If you are unable to find the application or set the application, please download the driver from Lenovo Support page and install it.

Also please download ThinkVantage System Update utility and install it, and after installing it please run the application so that it will check for the latest drivers and automatically install it.

After installing all the application please restart the system and check it once.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

Hi all, I have the X1 Carbon 2016 (20FB) and it is running Windows 10 Enterprise. I have all the lastest Windows and Lenovo updates. It all works pretty well except when it comes to starting back from sleep mode. I have the laptop configured to go to sleep when I close the lid. However when I reopen the lid, the power button and keyboard lights come on but the display stays off. Opening and closing the several times doesn't help. The only way to get the display to turn on is to quickly press the power button. This puts the laptop to sleep. If I press the power button again the laptop comes back to life and the display works again. Anyone else have this issue? Any possible solutions? Thanks,Ian

I recently purchased an X1 carbon 1st Gen running windows 10 and I can't find a way to get the fingerprint reader to work. It may not be possible but I thought I would see if anyone here has found a solution. Apparently there is a solution for the type 20AF but I can't find a solution or an updated driver for the Type 3460. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. I have updated my Bios and many of my other drivers. I have tried downloading the Synaptic Metallic drivers as well And I tried updating my AthenTec Driver for the fingerprint reader but it still doesn't work.

Hi, After installing Windows 10, I began to have issues with the left click button on the touchpad.  The left click suddenly stops functioning, and it does not work again until I reboot the computer.  It is not a hardware issue as I have tested this by changing the functionality between the left and right buttons, at which point the left button works again.  My sense is there is a bug in the touchpad's driver software under the new operating system.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers, I have scanned to ensure the computer does not have a virus, and I have reinstalled the operating system.  None of this solves the issue.  The left mouse click on the touchpad will still suddenly stop working at some period of time after using the computer (generally after leaving the computer idle and later resuming use).   Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.  Is it a bug in the driver software for the touchpad that needs to be fixed for Windows 10?   Thanks you!

A few days ago I was prompted to install an urgent BIOS update.  I followed the screen prompts and the system rebooted and flashed the BIOS.  Our company laptops all have Sophos encryption, which requires a separate login prior to booting the OS (Win7).  I've always been able to enter user ID and password information on that screen using the USB keyboard connected to my OneLink+ dock (which is connected to the laptop). Following this BIOS update, I can no longer use the keyboard or mouse (also USB) connected to the OneLink+ dock until the OS boots.  I have to open my laptop, enter my Sophos ID and password on the laptop keyboard, then close the laptop.  Once the OS (Win7) boots, I can use both the USB devices fine.  Interestingly enough, the monitor attached to the OneLink+ dock functions just fine before the OS boots up. I checked BIOS settings and couldn't see anything there that looked odd or out of place.  I also checed Device Manager to see if there were any warnings or issues, and didn't see anything. I tried to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version, but once you are above 1.23 that is not possible.  I did flash to the latest release - 1.27 - but that did not fix the issue. So I'm stuck with a rather awkward login process which was not an issue until this BIOS version was installed a few days ago.  I've reviewed other post for similar issues but have not found anything that points at a solution thus far... I have an X1 Carbon 20A7 that is 5 months out of warrenty and that will not start, most of the time. When I push the power button the button blinks 4 times, the fan kicks on for a split second, and the keyboard backlight and multifunction keys flash on once. After pushing the button multiple times (there isn't a magic number of times but generally it's 10-15 times) it will kick on. Once it is on there doesn't not appear to be any issues. It will even sleep and come back on without a fush. If you try to restart it however it will simply shutdown and not reboot. My gut says it is the system board but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

You already did what I would suuggest, except that I would press the power button a couple of times with the main and coin-cell batteries disconnected and I would wait 15 seconds before plugging them back in.  Other than that, it sounds like a more serious (motherboard) issue.  Some of the 20A7 machines are still under warranty.  Did you check?

Firstly Hello everyone, and sorry if this has been asked / solved before... I couldn't find the search option for the forum (its early, my brain is still sleeping). I have issues with getting the X1 Carbon to PXE boot, I have it connected to the network via the Lenovo USB / Ethernet adaptor, and when I press F12 the LAN option is there. This is where the problems start. One you press enter to boot via NIC the screen goes black and the text ">>Start PXE over IPv4" is displayed, this lasts for about 30 / 40 seconds before exiting back to the boot menu. It never boots through to Ghost. I have double checked that I have the TFTP server, PXE server and Ghostcast Server running correctly (and has been tested using a Vaio). Has anyone else seen this issue? Fixed this issue? Thanks for reading, and any help would be greatly appreciated
