Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

Q: Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good that would do, if when I plugged my other keyboard in, it installed a new one but the issue was still happening.

Thank you for your time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

I have an Emachine with WindowsXP on it, and it has this keyboard with these nifty little silver keys that make life SOOOOO much simpler. However, after some issues with virus I guess, suddenly they don't work properly anymore. Please note: I'm only guessing that the virus is what messed them up, I don't actually know.

My CUT/COPY/PASTE keys don't work at all, my CALCULATOR key gives me like 5 calculators, and since I don't use the others, I'm not sure if they work or not...heck, I'm not entirely positive what all of them do, but I'm sure that I can live without them.

I have tried unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in, but don't know what else to do to get the keys to work again. Suggestions anyone??

I recently noticed that some of my Windows keyboard shortcut keys aren't working...........any ideas????????

example: If I depress the windows button + "m" my open windows do not minimize

note: I checked the other user accounts on my pc and the keyboard shortcut keys seem to be working fine, just mine aren't working properly. The problem seems to only be w/ the Windows Natural keyboard shortcuts.

The problem is no real biggy, but I would like to regain use of this feature.....it makes computing a tad bit easier. Thanks.

Some of the standard shortcut key combinations no longer work on my PC.
The one I use most is Ctl + F ( to Find ) and it won't work from Internet Explorer or MS-Word. In Word, Ctl + B (Bold) no longer works.

Does anyone know how to reset all keyboard shortcuts on Windows XP SP 2 ?

A:Solved: Standard keyboard shortcut keys won't work

Some other application must be conflicting with the key settings.

Try disabling other Startup applications by running MSCONFIG and select the Startup tab.

Malwarebytes pardons Pirates and gives away free one year premium license keys. Malwarebytes Corporation is after the counterfeit keys, they?re running ?Amnesty key? program with which, if Malwarebytes Program detects abused, pirated or counterfeit keys during the upgrade to version 2.1.8, then the user will be presented with a special screen (Locate your license key) with two options (check the screenshot below).

Selecting the first ? ?I?m not sure where I got key from, or I downloaded it from the Internet? ? or second option ??I purchased my key?? will issue users a new and unique key of Malwarebytes anti-Malware premium, which user can use for one year or 12 months for free.

If you don?t activate the key or click the ?Cancel? button, then you?ll remain on the free version.

Next go to ?My Account? screen, note down the new key, your old key will be disabled after a period of time. This way, Malwarebytes disables all the pirated keys and, those who got Premium keys will enjoy one year protection and can renew if they desire when they about to expire.

What is Malwarebytes Amnesty Program?

The program page says ?The Internet is full of pioneers and cowboys. It?s also got its fair share of pirates and trolls. Some of those bad guys may have duped you into purchasing a counterfeit version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Or perhaps we?ve simply detected a problem with your key. Not to worry. Just setting up a new computer. Have a logitech receiver and wireless mouse + keyboard ... batteries in both are good (I checked with voltmeter).

So everything is fine and I'm setting up windows. I go to local security policy to disable the administrator account and then go to rename it, and find out my keys aren't working!! But for some odd reason, the shortcut buttons to calculator and internet explorer work just fine... just none of the keys (numbers or letters) work. cntrl alt del doesn't work.

So I try a keyboard that is from a working computer, and that won't work either. I'm really stumped. The USB ports should be fine as the MOUSE works fine (the wireless mouse and also other mouses work fine). The motherboard is brand new.
The working keyboard I tested doesn't seem to be even getting power on this new computer. Not sure why. I can't even get into the BIOS cause the keyboard doesn't work!

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I woke up this morning and some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working.

Im nearly 100% sure it isnt a faulty keyboard but rather a virus or something that is remapping my keyboard. The keyboard has been working fine up until today when the f, y, m, and ' keys stopped working all at once. Nothing spilled on the keyboard.. nothing like that. Ive tried a system restore but it didnt solve anything.

I tried to do some research on my own, but didnt find much.. one guy had the same problem, but I didnt see any concrete fixes.

One thing that makes me think its a remapping problem is that when i hold down the f, m, y, and ' keys and hit x, the return is " \eqx ". Holding different combos of the keys that arent working yields different results, but results nonetheless, and since theres some sort of return when i hit the keys, i assume they still work but something on the computer happened. The other person who had this issue that I found gave me the idea of holding down the keys and hitting x, since he did it and had the same results.

Is there a known virus that I may have? Any way to restore the key set/map to factory defaults? Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

Hello, I purchased Cooler Master's Devastator gaming gear combo off amazon and received it yesterday. Randomly today the ASDF and JKL; keys (oddly enough the keys you were taught to put your fingers on in elementary school) stopped working. However, they sometimes do work, but then stop again... It does not seem to be a keyboard command or anything like that, the device is getting enough power for the backlight to work, this still occurs with the backlight off, I have restarted my PC, tried different Usb drives and deducted that it was just that keyboard(the one I'm using now is fine) and finally, there is nothing inside those keys.
I feel the problem must lie within the software of the keyboard as there looks like there is nothing wrong with it physically.
I have been googling this all day and have fund nothing even close to the problem I am having.
It would be a huge hassle try and get a refund and I was very happy with the product before this problem occurred. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

I just recently got a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and I really like it. Some very cool things about it, such as volume keys, music control keys, etc.

So with the software it comes with, you can edit some of the keys to your liking. So, there are zoom in/out keys and a reset key(to reset to 100% view). It's supposed to be for photos but I had a better use for it. I set it as the hotkeys to zoom in/out with Firefox. But when I'm not using the internet and I still want to zoom in, I can't.

So I started using the Magnifier that windows offers, and to Zoom in and out, you have the onscreen buttons, but you can also press Windows Key and + or - to use. Now, the problem is, when setting up the hotkeys for the zoom buttons on the keyboard, the software allows Ctrl, Alt, etc. combinations, but it does not allow that with the Windows Key.

So is there a way I can change what the shortcut is? Or maybe something else I can do? I don't wanna have to install any other software.

Does anyone know a shortcut key combo action to zoom in and out of the monitor, a Word doc or Browser view without using the mouse + KB?

I am already familar with one shortcut action:
(Mouse wheel + Ctrl key).

And then there's the multi KB stroke path that goes like
(Alt + V | Zoom... | tab to size view | tab to OK)
That's too many keys. Not exactly a shortcut.

The shortcut I am trying to remember uses 2 or 3 keys and 1 is hit repeatedly to zoom in or out in steps.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Already tried the online Help in Word 97. Not there.

During this time I cannot even select anything on the Taskbar, although strangely, I'm able to start Process Explorer (CTL-ALT-DEL), as well as do some other things that I can't recall at the moment. Eventually, the intended function comes up and everything continues normally. If I start the same function from the Start Menu immediately after trying the shortcut key, there is no delay, whereas if I try the key again the problem will recur. During the delay, Process Explorer does not show any unusual activity for any active process. Also, at least some of the time, moving the mouse cursor to the Taskbar will result in a double-headed arrow for the duration of the slowdown.

After a bit of experimentation, it became clear that the delay has nothing to do with the function being initiated. That is, if I create a shortcut to ANYTHING, and I assign a Shortcut Key, the problem will occur (when I use the keys). Double-clicking the shortcut icon on the Desktop will start the function immediately, whereas starting it with the Shortcut Keys will produce the delay.

Hey folks,

I have a little problem and was wondering if somebody has an idea. For quite a while now my computer (Vista) does something quite odd. It suddenly creates shortcuts for my keys on the keyboard, meaning that whatever button I press, it automatically gives a command.

E.g. if I press "l", the Login-Menu appears, if I press "r", the command opens, if I press "x,y,z", something else happens. You get the point. The bad thing is that I do not know how to turn this off. Thus, I am not able to continue writing, as constantly new windows or commands pop up! I really becomes annoying after a while, you know ...

I was looking at the options of Ease Use, or similar things, but cannot find any properties to change. I do not do any weird key combination, or press the mouse in accordance to some secret code. It just seems to appear like that, and after a restart it is abolished again.

Any help? Any settings that I accidentally changed?
Grazie mille,

One of your window's buttons will be stuck. Win+L locks the computer (requiring login), Win+r goes to run, Win+d goes to desktop, and so forth. To test it, see if either of the buttons fails to bring up the start menu when pressed.

There is probably a feature for turning off these shortcuts somewhere, but what you'll need to do is clean out the windows keys.

We have a DYMO label printing software that has the keys Ctrl + Shift + L as it's shortcut key to launch it, but this conflicts with the Office/Word shortcut key for bullet point styles.  We can manually fix this by changing it by right clicking on
the DYMO icon in the system tray and selecting the "Shortcut Key..." in the context menu.
Where are the shortcut keys stored?  I've Googled, but I couldn't figure out how to pragmatically change it?

Regarding the system shortcuts for Windows, you can refer to the following KB:

You can change your DYMO shortcuts to avoid the conflicts.

Hope this helps

Ever since i did system restore to my computer to an earlier time, my computer does not function with the shortcut keys. I have put a shortcut into a game and mozilla because theyre my most used programs. Mozilla is Ctrl+alt+M while the game is Ctrl+alt+R. I am running a Windows XP Home edition and an updated one.

I tried reconfiguring the shortcut keys, however it does not work.

I tried putting none then clicking okay and then reconfiguring it again, it still does not work.

however, i noticed one thing. whenever i tried to set a shotcut key, all i have to do is press a letter and it would automatically type "ctrl+alt+[letter i typed]" .. this also does not work.

I think this is an error that occured during the system restoration process.

Hope you guys can help me on this problem. Thanks in advance

I've been wondering, why is it when I click on a shortcut on the desktop or under Start/Programs the program comes up instantly, but when I type in the shortcut keys, it can take forever for it to respond?

A:Shortcut keys slowness.

I too have this problem with XP. It can sometimes take a minute before the application loads - within which time it seems like Explorer has hung - because you cannot load the taskbar.

Anyone else experience this or (better still) have a solution ?

There's some strange thing going on with my custom shortcut keys . For some shortcuts, everything works fine. For others, they keys refuse to get set. And others, the settings go away after a reboot.

It's not anything serious, but I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything like this.

By the way, can anyone figure out where the info for the shortcut keys are stored? I'm searched around for awhile now with no success.

With Regards,
The Panda
