Solved: After HP 'surgery' display not right

Q: Solved: After HP 'surgery' display not right

Presario V3000 laptop, XP, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, drivers up to date, so Windows says.

Modem went out, sent to HP twice. Finally fixed. They had to change main board. Now it looks like a wide screen TV receiving nonHD signal and stretching it to full screen. What should be a square is wider than tall.

Also seems to be glary. White fonts on desktop under icons were opaque until I changed to bold font. Menu font (black) sometimes seems to fade together.

It's probably settings, but I don't know where.

I can call HP (AGAIN) but (no offense to anyone) I just hate to talk to people I have trouble understanding. Thought someone here might be able to help.

Appreciate any help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

From what you say I think you need to post a HijackThis log and then wait for someone qualified (gold shield next to their name) to take you through what needs to be done. Please go no further than the steps below and posting your results for now.You may want to print off this guide just in case.

Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.

Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've done this, hang on for further guidance.

Yesterday I spent two hours opening a Radeon 5850, cleaning and lubing it. It was noisy as hell and now it's quiet, so time well spent.

A:My most complex surgery I ever did

Did you happen to document your progress? Like take pictures of the before, during and after? How about recording fan speeds and temps for the before and after? What did you use to clean it?
Just thinking if someone comes here looking for information on how to do what you just did, by having such information attached, it may very well help that person make a decision on doing it themselves versus bringing it to a "Computer Repair" shop.

Good morning, all! I would like to transplant a Samsung EVO 850 SSD into my Ideapad Z580 notebook from another machine of mine. The SSD has a different OS on it (Linux Mint) than what is on the Lenovo's HDD (which is Windows 8.1), and it is also half the size of the HDD (SSD=250GB, HDD=500GB). When I attempted the transplant, the Lenovo would not boot up past the opening screen and gave me an error message that stated something along the lines of (it went by fast, so I couldn't get the exact wording) "PCI (?) media test failure, please check cable." When I put the original HDD back in there, it booted up as though nothing had happened. I'm wondering why this happened, and would putting a new SSD in there to do a clean install of my OS of choice be preferable? Also, when I attempted to use both a USB drive and a disc to install my OS of choice on it, I could not get it to boot from either of those options in BIOS. What am I doing wrong, here?

A:Ideapad Brain Surgery Not Working!

I would expect it to work. Are you sure the SSD is good?

Hi all,
Haven't made a post in a long time and I'm surprised my account is still active.

Here's the verdict; my laptop came shipped with an OEM Windows Vista installation. I wanted to dual-boot it with Windows XP but needed XP on the C: partition (plus the issue with older version of windows should be installed before a new version is installed) forced me to re-format, install XP SP3, install all the drivers and bring me to what it is now.

My laptop is fully functioning with Windows XP. I have a Linux Ubuntu 8.04 CD, Windows Vista OEM dvd and windows xp sp3 cd at hand. I want to dual boot my system with either windows vista, linux, or both.

Please answer these two questions:

1.) If I create a new partition and install Vista on the new partition, is it possible to upgrade the Vista installation to Windows 7 WITHOUT DOING ANY HARM AT ALL TO THE XP PARTITION OR IT'S BOOT LOADER? So I will then have a dual boot system with Windows XP and 7 (and both OS's fully working)?

2.) If I install Linux in a new partition alongside my XP partition will it be possible to install vista on a third partition AFTER I have installed Linux? So the order in which the operating systems have been installed would be:
- 1. Windows XP installed first
- 2. Linux Ubuntu installed second
- 3. Windows Vista installed third

Any help will be very much appreciated (as long as it's from someone who knows what they are talking about).

Britt had 69 tackles last season, including 10 for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Freshman Wesley Steiner is listed as his backup.

My Dell Insipron 6400 laptop will not support multiple monitors. I think I may not have a key driver installed. Help!!

I have attached two separate images, screen shot of my device manager and display properties and a screen shot of the same image on my mothers PC. (which is also a Dell Inspiron 6400)

On my PC, In my device manager I can not view the display adapters (there must be something installed and I do not have visiblilty?? correct??)

Also, on my display properties I do not even have the option for Multiple monitor support. (these are the same PC's)

I inserted my Drivers and Utilities CD from Dell, but I did not see any driver on there that was applicable to a display adapter.

Am I on the right track???

this is a strange one to me...

the hdwe is a hp "minitower" athlon processor, embedded nvidia vid, fairly fast and responsive on a good day.
I worked on this system a year ago, obsessively, setting up Vista as well as is possible - lean/clean/stable.
recently the primary user account, upon logging in, gets a "noise" display on the monitor that looks like an inability to sync.
I shall not rule out the possibility that an "extortion-ware" malware is causing this but extensive checks don't show any malicious thingies. There is a lightly used, tech-support second user account that logs in fine.
I set the display properties on the troubled account, the display looked normal again, but after a couple of days of use, the bad display issue is back.

is this a known issue? video refresh rate anomaly ??? why would it be "fine" for a year, then suddenly develop the problem? debug steps?

I worked on it 2 weeks ago and it was fine when I finished, now in the ditch again so I'm fishing for new debug steps to try and determine what exactly causes it to go non-linear...

thanks for your suggestions

haven't been here for a while because haven't got much time to sit and enjoy the computer how are you guys doing?

well, I believe that vista comes with loads more problems than XP. I messed up my XP because I mess with it, but vista? doesn't even touch it but it messed up by itself! argh.

to make the story short. about 3 hrs ago I went online and presented with 14 new CRITICAL updates from windows update. I picked everything that's under 1MB in size so I can speed up the install process. the last time I tried to install everything, got many problems from some updates refused to install and some are even failing and wants to be re-downloaded only to fail again because the order of installing those stuff isn't correct. nuts. well anyway, so I picked about 6-8 updates if not mistaken. then the computer wants to reboot, so I did let it reboot, and it came back OK. then I left for the bathroom for about 5 minutes, when I came back the screen already go to screen saver mode and when I move the mouse all I see is this garbled display. so I shut the computer down, waited about 10 minutes and turn it on. the problem is worse, the whole screen is white! I can't see a darn thing. it turned black for a while when the windows green bar thingy supposed to came on, but then it goes back to white. geez!

even though I want to roll back those updates so much, how can I do it without being able to see what's on the screen? and I've been rea... Read more

Recently the backlight went out on the wifes’ laptop display. Thinking that I was pretty smart, I picked up a replacement on eBay.
What came out of the laptop is a 15.0 XGA Samsung with a part number of 5F4G64512F.
What I ended up with (my own fault) was a LG Phillips LP150X2 XGA Display. The cable is different, however it still plugs into the video card.
So I figure ill give it a try any way.

The display only displays on two thirds (left side). See Signature for system info. .

What should I do? I’m lost.

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

A:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension; in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad. It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

Hi, this is my very first time here & not sure where to post, sorry? I'm also not sure how, or where I'll see the response? Sorry if I'm in the wrong place? My problem (if anyone can help?) is: I have an ACER Aspire 6930G with no display. The laptop starts up no problem but there's no display whatsoever. Please can you give me any directions on this? Will I need a new screen or is it something simple? The laptop is approximately 4-5 years old, and while I understand that laptops this age will start going wrong, money is tight & I really can't afford anything major. I've attempted to reboot in safe-mode without success, I've also attempted to connect to an external monitor but this hasn't worked either. I've tried the 'FN-F5' method & this has also failed. My suspicion is that the screen and/or video processor on the MB has given up? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I started up my computer this morning and opened OE6 to read my mail and there were only 3 folders available, all created today: 1. In-Box (1) - 3 new messages; 2. Deleted Items (1) - empty;3. Misc (1) - empty. I should have 18 folders and there are a LOT of messages. I looked in 'C' Drive where the OE6 files are located and all the .dbx files are there.

Why did the system ignore them and create these 3 new ones (with the (1) behind them)? I thought I would import all the folders, but the system won't let me. I keep getting a box popping up that says, "The specified message store could not be opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express".

By the way, I have Windows 2000 Pro and scads of virus, spyware, adware software which are all up to date as are all the Microsoft 'updates'.

I guess I could move all the .dbx folders to a safe place and then re-install OE6, and then import all the former .dbx files but that is quite a bit of work and I am worried the same thing will happen the next time I start up my computer. Please help

I have a private web site. It's a vanity thing really. I've always been able to get into my files using ftp:// and then the web address. When one does this to a web site one then gets a dialogue box asking for user name and password. I am now not getting this far. I.E. immediately says that it cannot display this web page. My hoster says it's me but I've got several friends and family to try it and they get the same result. Firefox and Chrome both access it correctly. I can access other sites' ftp with no difficulty using I.E. (at least I can get as far as the log in). It is therfore something quite specific to my site at the hosts and Internet Explorer. If I enter my host's site, ftp:// followed by easyinternetsolutions . co . uk (no spaces of course) then I certainly get their log in. If anyone has any idea then I could get back to them and tell them that are wrong!!!

Before anyone says "well use Firefox then", the beauty of I.E. is that there is the facility to open the ftp page using Windows Explorer and it is then simplicity itself to upload files by "copy and paste".

I have been getting fragments and underdrawing on my display for a week or so now and I haven't been able to resolve the issue by lowering my refresh rate or any of the other Windows troubleshooting tips. Also, some of my programs will shut down randomly.

I rebooted and got no report, so I went and downloaded the latest intel driver for my computer, installed it and then rebooted.

The active desktop now won't restore and I am still having fragmenting and underdrawing problems.

Have you tried using the "Last Known Good Configuration" option?

-Start your computer and keep tapping the F8 key.
-When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

If that doesn't work, restart your computer again, tap the F8 key, select the Windows Safe Mode, once there use the Windows System Restore feature to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Just curious, did you recently update/install any drivers? The video driver perhaps?

I posted the following in another forum where I was also asking for help about a random crashing problem, but please just pay attention to the parts about the display problem:

Not only does my computer freeze randomly, but now the display is messed up. A lot of times when I scroll through pages, the text and images get all garbled and screwed up. Sometimes, when I select the text, the problem goes away, but otherwise it's been annoying me for a few days now.

I did a clean uninstall and reinstall of my graphics drivers, and reinstalled the drivers for my monitor. The problem didn't go away. The only other time anything like this has happened was when my video card was loose, but I fixed that quickly. I also tried changing my display settings, but that only made it worse. And it does it in safe mode, too. I suspect that my video card is failing, now.

Speaking of my dying computer in general, I also cannot scan and remove viruses because the computer always locks up mid-scan. And there was at least 1 virus.

But to give you a sense of what it looks like, here's a screenshot I took:
Because only certain parts of the items displayed are garbled, I don't think it's a connection problem. As I'm finishing typing this, 70% of the text in the box has already become unreadable.

edit: OMG, right after I typed this the problem went away. But it'll come back, because it went away for about an hour after I redid the drivers. But it will always cras... Read more

A:Solved: Serious display problem

Remove your graphics card & clean the contacts on it. (a pencil rubber is good for this).
Replace it & try again.

If this doesnt work, can you beg/steal or borrow a different graphics card to try in this pc, before you replace your current card to make sure this is the prob.

I updated all my drivers using DriverMax and then verified those uploads against Intel's updated driver support scan. Both agreed with each other on the updates and that all was well. It was some week later when I was working and closed the lid on my HP dv7 (Win 7 Home Premium) opened it again within 10 seconds and ever since the screen simply doesn't come back after closing the lid. I have set all power options to Max Performance, turned off Hibernation and Sleep with no change in outcome. Checked the updated BIOS (updated via OM Intel site) and no applicable (or at least identified) power settings found. Suggestions welcomed!

I had a previous problem (Windows-No disk) which appeared to be solved. However, shortly afterward, I began receiving the following error at boot up:
"Display.exe-No disk There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into Drive\Device\Harddisk2\DR14"
I am attaching Hijackthis.log.
Thanks for any help.

A:Solved: Display.exe=No Disk

I just realized that there are two other error window titles: "weatherpulse.exe-no disk" and Titan B-2.exe-No disk" and that the "DR14" is sometimes "DR1". I don't know if any of that makes any difference. Again, thanks for any help. Ned

Ok... well I try using the normal windows update, downloaded ok , start wizard and then same ting stop and say that there was an internal error and the app. needs to close.
what happened ?? Do I'm missing another update or any special file so I can be able to Install this new SP3 from Microsoft? ?
Any ideas how to fix this? or why is this happening?

Hey everyone,

I've got a Dell 17" LCD monitor (model: E173FP) and a question.

I need to fix the driver since I just reformatted; however, I can't edit a particular setting.

Follow me on this part: [right-click desktop] and select "Properties" => "Settings" => "Advanced" => "Monitor".

I need to get to the "Properties" screen, which is where the "Drivers" options are. Unfortunately, the entire "Properties" screen is grayed out, so I can't click "Properties" or change the Monitor Settings like the Hertz rate.

What is the work around for this?

Oh yeah, Dell said I have to pay them $50 if I want them to fix it. Noooooo!

A:[SOLVED] Display Properties

Hello Annoyed,

Have you reinstalled all drivers (Chipset,Graphics,Audio, etc) after reinstalling Windows?
Look in Device Manager and make sure that there is no yellow ?'s or !'s listed.

If you have all drivers installed you can download the driver for your monitor from the Dell site.

I turned on the computer this morning like the usual. My computer seem to turning normally, you can hear the sound and light. The monitor power is on (the light turned green then to orange). But It only displayed this message "cable disconnected input:HD15. Go to power save". Sorry if I post this in the wrong section, it's my first time posting here and any help is much appreciated!

Make sure your VGA Cable is properly connected and it hasn't came loose.. Can you see anything on the screen, like the BIOS screen?
