only getting mono from stereo speakers

Q: only getting mono from stereo speakers

Hi Folks,

I have an Acer Aspire SA80-Z970 desktop computer that I purchased about 3 years ago. Some time ago I noticed that I was only getting sound out of one speaker (right hand side). Trying different speakers or the built in monitor speakers did not solve the problem. I've tried updating drivers to no avail.
I've looked at "sound effects manager - AC97 audio control panel" and everything appears to be in order. I've even tried resetting defaults. There is a "test speakers" option there that proves only one speaker is working. As far as I am aware, this PC has an onboard soundcard. I'm running windows XP and also have Ubuntu Linux loaded on a separate partition. The same problems occurs in Linux.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

Martin

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My band recorded a song and put it on the computer. When I play it, it only comes out of through one channel and I want to know how I can go about fixing it. I used this really half-assed setup, through a video camera (not digital) and then mono through USB. I know that I should probably get a mic but I'm far too lazy.

Any ideas?

A:Mono and stereo

Go download Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and use that.
Shouldn't be a problem to re-save your audio in stereo. Note it will still be mono, in a sense, it just sends the same signal out both left and right channels.

After you get Audacity installed and find a way to import your song (make a backup copy), if you can't figure it out, we'll take the next step.

Good luck!

Hi everyone!, I have a bunch of stereo split-track .wma's that I need to convert to mono minus the vocal track. Does anyone know of a piece of software that mutes a channel and converts to mono in batches?

Adobe Audition has awesome batch processing, infact I routienly take files that are recorded in stereo from a mono source (recorder won't record in mono) and strip out one channel in Audition for a part of my job.

Edit: How often are you wanting to do this, and what size are the files? If this is going to be a 1 time thing I could do it for you real easy, provided the file sizes aren't in the gigs.

A:No Stereo Mix or Mono Mix in Windows 7 64-bit

I don't have it on Windows 7 32 bit.

I have tried to get it with my onboard sound (Sigmatel) and also with my separate sound card (Creative Labs Soundblaster Live 24 Bit).

No dice, with various drivers.

This means I cannot record what I am hearing over speakers.

If you hear of a solution, advise. I expect this is due to the sound card rather than Windows 7 because I know of at least one person who still can record what he hears--he has a rather expensive sound card.

I would love to hear from anyone who has got "what you hear" recording going on Windows 7.

What sound card were you using on 32 bit when it worked?

How can I make the audio stereo so it can be played on a Surround Sound System?

A:Make Mono Sound Stereo

There is no stereo information in a mono track, but you can simulate stereo using an audio editor such as the free Audacity:http://audacity.sourceforge.net/A basic technique is covered here:http://www.selected-audio-reviews.com/arti...o_to_stereo.htmWhat format are your video files being recorded in? The difficulty is going to be that the mono sound is incorporated into the audio layer of the video file, and extra sound would have to be added in as an overdub. If you simply want to record straight onto left and right channels, you would need to get a y-splitter lead for the audio connection, so there is two connections available. This would record two identical channels, sound would come from left and right speakers instead of just one, but there would be no stereo "surround" effect.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or knows how to fix this. My microphone is supposed to record in stereo and I can use the "listen to microphone" setting on my computer and hear it that way but when I go into audacity or any other recording programs I have on my computer it will record both channels of a stereo recording as if I'm recording with a mono microphone on both channels. If i use the Realtek sound card program and hit the "listen to microphone" button though I can hear the microphone in stereo but just not in other programs. I've tried altering all of the settings I can find but I cannot seem to stop this from happening. I'm sorry if my wording is kind of off I'm not 100% sure how to phrase parts of this. I'm not sure if this will help but I am using a 3dio free space and it connects through a standard Aux. cable.

My question is whether the MIC input is looking for a balanced [3-conductor] plug or unbalanced [two conductor]. I'm not getting a good sound and so de-bugging.

I notice that the mic line on my ancient Cpq-delivered headset is three-conductor, but that particular headset was packaged with a monitor and may have been peculiar to that particular device..

Hello!

New member with an annoying problem. I got the latest updates from Microsoft last week and after that my internet sound has had problems. At first, it would quickly fade to almost nothing before coming back. It now switches from normal stereo (set at 24 bits, 48000 Hz) to softer mono for a second or two. I've tried changing it to DVD quality, but it didn't help. This is happening on streaming videos and youtube (both on Firefox and Explorer), but not my own files played via media players.

Ideas? Thanks!

A:Sounds constantly switches b/w mono and stereo on Internet videos

Youtube either uses Adobe Flash or HTML5 for their videos (and sound). Sound problems are often because of a corrupt Flash player. Reinstall the Adobe flash player as a first step.

By the way, "CD Quality" Audio is 16 bit 44100Khz. That is what is used with commercial audio CD's and what a "standard" wav audio file is.

I have no audio, but when I go to (right-click sound icon in tray) --> Playback Devices --> Playback tab --> right click "Speakers / Headphones Realtek High Definition Audio" --> Configure, then in Speaker Setup dialog:
* If I select Quadraphonic in the "Audio channels" list, I hear sound for the RL (rear-left) and RR (rear-right) speakers, with my stereo speakers plugged into the black jack in back. I cannot get sound when testing the regular L and R speakers in Quadraphonic mode; I've tried all 5 jacks.
* When I select Stereo, then clicking L or R speaker icon to test results in no sound, again no matter which of the 5 jacks i plug my stereo speakers into.
* So the only way I have sound is in Quadraphonic mode, but only for the back speakers. Therefore I cannot hear regular stereo output from applications, such as Youtube in Chrome.
This seems like a bug, or a highly unintuitive aspect of Realtek's or Dell's software at best. Any ideas on how to solve? (Beside buying full surround sound speakers)

Friends:

My speakers are only putting out a mono-like sound. Testing reveals the following --

Having drilled down through all the controls, turning down all the sliders in the equalizer still results in some low level of sound, say 2, still bleeding through.

Configuration screen always shows that clicking on one speaker is significantly louder than the other. And left and right sliders control all sound, not only left or right.

Appears not to be a hardware issue, given that all the above work fine when using headphones, and that both speakers, and the subwoofer, are putting out sound, just not at the right levels. The two speakers are not putting out a truly mono signal; that is the effect because only one signal is predominant. In fact, I listened to an old Hendrix song, and it was obvious that only one channel was present. But the software is only controlling the one signal, with the other channel present but significantly lower.

A:Mono-like output to speakers -- software issue

You may need a new sound card. Also, I'd suggest a mixer and a headphone amplifier. The mixer will give you sonic control while the amp will pump some power to the shotty speaker. Usually mixers have preamps built right in. I suggest a cheap Behringer; great mixers (and speakers, amps) that are inexpensive and are very solid quality. CPU's don't have the best sound output control, especially the sound card and input in general. Thats why I rely on a nice tube preamp, Marshall 59' reissue tube stack, an active DI box for balanced signals to a xenyx mixer w/ brit EQ's, and control for sonic mastering. Also if you are using the built-in speakers, just don't... useless.. lol. Even a pair of CPU speakers doesn't do good records any justice. Studio pro quality monitors is the only thing for me. You'll hear things in songs youve never heard. Highly, highly recommend it. Class A/B amplified monitor w a nice ~5" speaker and a 1" tweeter perfecto. Preferably kevlar for the larger speaker, silk for the tweeter. Got way off track but you'd love the sound, I'm a very seasoned musician with a rather good ear. JBL, Bose, ProSonus are among my personal favorites. Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I've been researching and pulling my hair out, and starting to think what I'm after is somehow not possible to achieve.

My goal is to be able to record my screen, my speakers, and my mic (narration), while also being able to playback ONLY my speakers to my headphones.

Basically, I wish to monitor ONLY the speaker audio, WITHOUT my mic (narration).

I thought I could achieve this by using Realtek HD Audio Manager, which allows you to playback two different audio streams simultaneously. However, it would seem that only certain Windows applications which are written to give you the option of changing the playback device can take advantage of this feature. The particular Windows application which I am recording does not give me that option.

So essentially I am wondering if there is a way to force an application to output to a particular playback device, ie. the Realtek HD Audio 2nd Output. The Realtek HD Audio 2nd Output would play to my headphones (application audio ONLY) while at the same time I would be able to record my screen, my speakers, and my mic all together at once.

I did find this post which broke my heart as it seems this might not be possible due to Windows only providing a single mixer, but wanted to try asking around here too -> Different audio output for certain programs [Solved] - Multimedia - Apps General Discussion

Ive searched google and this forum and have found no solid answer for my frustrating problem.

In previous OS I've pluged in my mic and go 'test test' and I would hear myself, in real time, through the speakers.

Vista does not do this apparetnly/

To make matters worse, the mic will not feed through the stereo mix (because it wont come through the speakers?).

I definetly have all this enabled, all hidden things revealed. I've rolled back teh drivers for the sound card, updated them, updated them again, shut down, restarted, tried a million different settings and STILL no mic for stereo mix or speakers.
I can see the green bars going when I speak, and it works in programs like skype.

But this stereo mix is a big problem. I similcast an internet radio and TV show. In order to broadcast the audio from the music videos I play on the TV show over the Shoutcast radio server, I need stereo mix. However, I also need full use of my mic because a tv and radio show without a mic is pretty boring.

Has ANYONE found a solution to this problem or should I just downgrade to XP, which runs my audio settings without hassle.

I hope this is the right forum to ask.  I have a computer with Windows 8.1.  It has mini jacks on the back for line in, line out, rear left & right, side left & right, and center/subwoofer.  I'd been using the line out for computer speakers.  Now I have the line out going to a stereo amplifier.  I want to have the option of using the external computer speakers too.

I know I could do this with a splitter, but is there a better way?  I've tried the computer speakers in all of the other outputs.  I went to Control panel/sound/playback tab/speakers/configure.  I tested the speakers in all of the other outputs, and the test works.  However, the normal computer sound (which is now going to the stereo amp) doesn't come out of the computer speakers in any combination.

Is there a way to set it up so I can use either?

I swapted the external unit for another permanently attached to my XP laptop and found no change. I then played both external units over my XP laptop without any problem. It therefore seems that the problem lies with the Vista laptop and is probably a hardware issue. Hello all,
I recently found some nice stereo bookshelf speakers for free at a yard sale. They're quite nice RCA speakers, and I soldered the wires to a 3.5mm connector so as to use them with my computer. Still, my computer's sound card is unable to power these speakers, and the end result is quieter than my default computer speakers.

So I read up on the internet and saw that I needed to stick an amplifier between the computer and the speakers. I found this model on Amazon for about thirty bucks:

Amazon.com: Pyle Home PCA1 Mini 2 x 15-Watt Stereo Power Amplifier: Electronics

Now, my question is this. Do the speakers then plug in to this amplifier, and this amplifier plug into the computer? I believe this RCA splitter to 3.5MM splitter (Amazon.com: "Audio Splitter, 3.5Mm Stereo Male To 2 RCA Female": Electronics) would run from the amplifier and then plug into my computer, correct? Now.

My question is as follows. What do I need to buy to connect these speakers to the amplifier? Will the amplifier have a 3.5mm jack? If possible I'd like to keep the 3.5mm jack which I soldered onto the speakers on there. I just want to make sure I don't spend the thirty bucks on this amp and then find out it won't work or something.

Thanks for helping an audio newbie!

A:Setting up Stereo Speakers

The only problem here is, by the time you buy an amp, and everything you need to get it connected properly, you could just simply by a small set of 2.1 speakers.

For example this 25W set:
Newegg.com - Logitech Z313 25 w 2.1 Speaker System
Which may, or may not, be better overall.

Unless this is just something you want to do, just because you can.
Im not sure the best way to re-wire everyhting to work on the PC though. Perhaps others would have better advice in that area.

I was just about to order a nice speaeker set for my newly built win x64 comp., then I just remembered that there was an "aux" function in my stereo. I also found this ( I really don't know how to describe it) device where you can plug in a yellow aux plug into it, and then plug the device into the motherboard, and then connect the aux wires.(there are three types red, yellow and white). So, I plugged the device in (which looks similar to a video card, or sound card, or any other PCI slot device from the outside) into the motherboard. Then, I plugged one end of a red-white-yellow wire to the device in the computer, and the other one in the stereo, turned it to AUX, no results. Is there a driver I need? I did look into device manager, and it was sort of complicating to exactly pin-point which one it was though, but I don't recall anything working improperly.

Not only this, but I tried using the headphone jack. ~I have a whole bottom of a closet filled with wires...I have no clue where they came from but there are wires, I;m pretty sure for anything you need in life~ This headphone jack was actually unique because it had 2 sides that you had to plug in. I have a pair of stereo speakers, and because of the length of the power cord, and the length of of the 3.5mm jack cable, switching the speakers around is impossible. When I put headphones into the headphone jack in the left (or right channel) speaker, the channels are restored to their proper place. Now every time, as a result, every guy trying to murder me on the right sounds like they're on the left.

I have a Realtek sound driver, and no idea what sound card I have.

Sounds like an inexpensive electrical extension cord would solve this ...

When I use my headphones for gaming it tries to use 5.1 sound so I end up getting no sound from the center, only my left and right. I can fix this by going into sound > playback devices and changing the speakers configuration to stereo, but I was wondering why it isn't automatically doing this when I plug them in. I don't see "Headphones" in the list of playback devices whether I plug them in the front or rear or unplug my speakers either, only "Speakers".

Also I updated my audio drivers and played around in VIA HD Audio Deck. Headphones settings don't appear there either unless I switch from "redirected headphones" to "independent headphones" but then that gives me two audio streams or whatever.

The machine does not know what is plugged in. Only you do. You will need to change the settings manually. The speakers and the mike are the same thing, just different connecors.

I want to get my MP3 player running through my CD player's speakers. Can anyone help?

A:Headphone jack to stereo speakers

Are you talking about a "boom box" type cd player? If so, your stereo needs to have some type of aux input. You can use the headphone jack of the mp3 player as an output but keep the volume low. Inputs are normally line level so they don't need a lot of power sent to them to amplify the music. Infact, sending too much of a signal into an input can damage a stereo. try to balance it so the volume you here from a cd and the mp3 player are the same. .1 watt is enough for the line level input.

A:Solved: Logitech stereo speakers

The surge likely damaged the speakers as well, in particular, the amplifier which drives the speakers.

I know there's a topic a lot like this one on these forums, but the guy had a different problem and it was never resolved.

my right speaker is the speaker that connects directly to the computer and to the AC adapter. however, the audio cable isn't long enough for it to reach all the way to the right side of my monitor now that i've stationed my tower to the left of my desk, so the right speaker is on the left, and the left speaker (connected to the right) is on the right. without spending money, is there any way to reverse the stereo on my speakers using software, preferrably?

and no, you absolutely cannot do it from the volume control in the control panel.

thanks!

ps: here's the configuration...

CPU---------------R speaker .......... Monitor .......... L speaker
Power--------------' .... '--------------------------------'

A:Reversing Stereo on my computer speakers

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot

Other than rewiring the speakers (advanced users only ),
I can only think of some games I've played that have
a software reverse stereo ouput in audio settings.

There are features in various recording software that will
also let you reverse stereo out put.

So there is no way. (without spending any $$)
I could be wrong here but not likely.

If length of cable is a problem, (advanced users only )
just cut the shortest one and
lengthen it with (b u t t) connectors ($0.45 usd radio shack)
and more wire to extend it to any length you want.

There are stereo extending cables too I'm using 2 right now.

The GREEN speaker jack is the correct analog speaker output.  What sound problem are you having?

I have been playing music from a set of external speakers. Recently, only the main speaker was working, the speaker into which another corresponding speaker is plugged in, as well as the power source. The other speaker simply would not play audio. Depending on the position of the input in the jack, however, the other speaker would begin to function. I have googled this to no avail, perhaps my wording was the problem. I have checked my speaker's properties in Windows, have up to date drivers, etc. Any solutions so the input must not be in the specific position required for both speakers to function? A wiring problem perhaps? I'm more of a software person, not hardware.

It could be a loose connection.

Hello,

I recently purchased an inexpensive sound card. However, it's a 5.1 card, and I only have stereo desktop speakers. I really don't want to splurge, and the El-Cheapo card didn't come with anything but drivers. Anyone know how I can make the sound card output in stereo as opposed to 5.1.

Note. This is WIndows 2000. I may or may not have posted in the wrong forum (may be a windows issue)

A:Using stereo speakers with a 5.1 sound card

I have windows xp but the way to do this should be the same. Go to control panel, then go to sounds and device. There should be an option for speaker settings there. click on advanced and then change your speaker set up. hopefully this will solve your problem.
